Shinsou’s Descent

Shinsou just wants to be a hero. His Quirk is deemed villainous by almost everyone he meets, and his dreams fall short as he fails to get onto the Hero Course at U.A., forcing him to take General Studies. Despite the odds stacked against him, Shinsou is determined to become the hero he’s always dreamed of. However, after an encounter with the League of Villains and influenced by Stain’s ideals, Shinsou’s eyes are opened, and his dreams of becoming a hero twist into something darker.

He sees the dark side of heroism, and when he’s eventually given the chance to become the hero he’s always wanted to be, he’s not sure he wants it anymore. Torn between two people he cares for, a villain and a hero, Shinsou descends into an internal battle.

What is he? A hero or a villain? Or perhaps something else entirely?

The FEELS. Oh shit, they hit me like a truck. I cried while watching Your Lie In April and I cried while reading this. I am in love with this fic and the idea of musicians!todobaku occupies my brain 24/7.

2. Alcohol Speaks Louder Than Words by CelticMoone (incomplete // currently at 6k)

“I don’t think so,” his dad said, wiping his chin with the back of his palm to rid himself of the dribble of wine that fell from his lips. “And why the hell not? You feeling threatened?” Katsuki challenged. Hitoshi was sure he was delirious at this point. There was no way in hell he was sitting in his father’s home, listening to Katsuki drunkenly argue for his hand in marriage. That just didn’t compute. Damn, he’d really have to apologize to Denki for all the times he’d teased him for frying his brain. Hitoshi now knew exactly what it felt like and, man, oh man, was it literal torture. “I shouldn’t be the one afraid of threats, Bakugo. If you so much as lay an unholy finger on my son I will make sure your life is a living hell.” His father’s words were chilling. His face sported a less than comforting grin, hands folded neatly under his chin. OR Katsuki and Hitoshi get married whilst drunk, much to Aizawa's chagrin. 3. To Watch You Fall (is a beautiful thing) by ChaoticHeart (complete // 62k, 10 chapters)

Aizawa has witnessed many relationships bloom over the course of his years teaching at U.A. In the end, whether these relationships last or not doesn’t matter to him. He has never been invested in the romantic endeavors of his students, and it’s easier to view their relationships with a sense of detachment, knowing that many of them will inevitably crash and burn. They’re all so young- they’ll get it right eventually, he would say to himself. But this… this is Hitoshi they’re talking about, and suddenly, like a switch being thrown, Aizawa finds himself caring all too much about the personal lives of his students. He never thought he’d be in a position to watch his adopted son slowly fall in love (with Class 1-A’s resident gremlin, of all people), yet here he is.

This was such a satisfying ride. Although it is outsider POV (Aizawa's), it all feels very clear. I love how EraserMic are polar opposites lol. The fic came together beautifully and I loved the slow descent of how Shinsou and Bakugou got together (though maybe Aizawa was getting a bit impatient-).

4. allow me the pleasure of loving you by pyrrhicwildfire (series of oneshots // total 15k // complete)

TODOBAKU, Fluff and Romance

My babies are adorable as hell and their shenanigans? Amusing as well.

5. Motivation to a Realization by NeonBlackRoseRevived (oneshot // 5k)

It's common for first years in the Heroics course at U.A to write a mandatory essay on how and why they would become a villain. No, this is not some attempt and making sure there are no traitors, and no this is not done to discriminate between quirks. This essay is used to get future heroes thinking about what-if's that could make or break them. This is for future heroes to know what to do, what to expect if one ever deflects or something else happens to make them become villains. Bakugou doesn't want to write this stupid essay, but like hell, he's going to get himself kicked out of the Heroics course for not completing it.

As for his very own Akaaaaashiii, i think it is without a doubt Shinso (i feel like after the joint training with class B, the two have built a great friendship. Imagine Denki seeking him out and inviting him for class hang outs. That or Denki hangs out with the Gen Ed students). If its not Shinso, its probably Ojiro-kun!

ohhh, that's a good way to put it!

during bokuto's first appearance in the manga, takeda-sensei remarked that somehow, watching him play fires up/cheers up the opponents too(?) and i think denki also plays a similar part in keeping morale up during a battle :-)

shinsou and akaashi would be such great friends if they ever met TT and yes, i'm living for the kamishin friendship too and i'm really hoping we get to see them interact some more in the future. i wanna see how shinsou warms up to denki eventually once he becomes a part of 1A, i think it'll be very funny and wholesome :*)

ojiro my beloved he is actually so funny and hot <3 and he'd probably the easiest to get along with out of everyone in 1A (for shinsou) because he's so... normal. but of course with denki always playing with his tail, where ojiro goes denki goes too... so shinsou probably has to accept that it's a package deal (☆▽☆)

Bakugou Katsuki is many things, but he's not a liar. So when they ask : "Did you tell Midoriya to kill himself ?" When they ask, he says yes.

This was so deliciously sad, oh my god. Beautifully written and had a very bittersweet tone to it throughout the fic. The ending made me openly gasp and a complete 10/10.

Absolutely brilliant. Idea? Brilliant. Execution? Brilliant. As a todobaku enthusiast, this hit the EXACT spots that needed to be hit. 10/10, will read again. The way both the halfs were portrayed was utter GENIUS.

Five times the class didn't get the Kacchan-Deku dynamic, and the one time they started figuring it out. // "So that was fucking weird, right?" Kirishima checked, pointing at the door they'd just left through. The other occupants of the room nodded in agreement. "I don't think I've ever seen those two have a conversation that didn't end in Midoriya's physical health taking a hit before." Todoroki muttered, head tilting to the side. "It is very odd," Tokoyami agreed. "Could that simply be what happens when Bakugou neglects his sleep schedule?" Kaminari shook his head. "I don't think so, we've been with him all day. He's mostly been normal, apart from just ignoring the shit out of us. I think Mido's the first person he actually responded to." "This is so weird," Kirishima reiterated.

Since so many people liked my svsss rec list I thought I might do one for Naruto, warning all of these are either sasuke-kakashi centric so if you don't like that I recommend you don't read this! Anywho!

heroes come back Summary: Sasuke Uchiha is reborn as Timothy Drake

With Friends Like These Summary:

“I’m from the future—seven years in the future.” There’s a long, drawn-out silence. Itachi’s face is unreadable as he stares at Sasuke. “You’re what?” he finally says.

Sasuke travels back in time to stop the war. He infiltrates the Akatsuki in order to kill them - he doesn't expect to take a page out of Naruto's book and befriend them instead.

CCG Public Enemy No 1 Summary: Kakashi had a single red-and-black eye for more than half his life. Now, he has two.

twist 'verse Summary: Team Seven, in all its iterations, gets fucked over by whatever cosmic powers yet again and time travels/reincarnates/possesses bodies of the Founders. (Note: This is a series not a fic, but I thoroughly enjoyed it so it's making the list anyway.)

Frayed Truths 'verse Summary:

"What are you saying?" Kakashi demands, distress turning his tone harsh. "That you don't know when he'll wake up?" "I'm saying I don't know if he will."

When Itachi uses the Tsukuyomi on his brother that day in the hallway, he miscalculates. In the aftermath, Sakura and Naruto struggle with what it means to be a team and Kakashi sits by the bedside of a boy that might never wake.

A single misstep, and everything changes.

(Note: This is also a series and not a fic, I'm sorry about that, but once again it's very good. The series itself has no summary so I went with the summary for the first fic in the series.)

How a Young Heart Really Feels Summary: It was absolutely the most devastating thing to ever happen to him in his six years of life. He knew Uchiha were supposed to love too deeply, but this was ridiculous! He was just a kid, for god's sake! He didn't want to be in love!

Or: Sasuke gets a crush and it messes with best laid plans.

Misrecognition Summary: During the fight on top of the hospital after Itachi's tsukuyomi Sasuke sees Naruto's rasengan and decides that was the final nail to hammer home his weakness, how he would never be able to become stronger than his brother. He was a loser, destined to fail, destined to die. So he might as well die now.

Sasuke tries to use Naruto's rasengan as a means to an end. Friend-killer Kakashi watches this.

Restore My Faith Summary: Sasuke was consumed with hatred because his family was killed. His entire family, not a single person left alive except him and their killer. It was enough to drive someone insane, or into the arms of the first maniac promising him enough power for revenge.

Instead Sasuke finds a little baby Uchiha on a meaningless mission and leaves Konoha for a vastly different reason. (Note: Very literally my favorite fic in the world, of you were to read any fic on this list I beg that it is this one.)

Never Trust Your Rinnegan (Tales of Sasuke's Travels) Summary: "Sasuke isn't in the Elemental Nations.

None of the Elemental Nations have buildings quite like this, people quite like this. Sure, Ame is weird, but this is really pushing it. These people don't have Chakra signatures, they shouldn’t be alive.

The Rinnegan has never teleported him somewhere he hasn’t already gone."

OR: Sasuke is transported to the world of BNHA and has a very hard time trying to get out.

Road to Nowhere Summary: Hitoshi knows there's something wrong with himself before he's even old enough to have a sense of self. He looks at his reflection and knows that the infant looking back at him isn't what he should be seeing.

His dreams are a maelstrom of grief and fear, his mind overwhelmed with a lifetime of emotions his brain isn't developed enough to comprehend. There's an ingrained instinct blaring that everything is wrong wrong wrong.

In which Hatake Kakashi is reincarnated as Shinsou Hitoshi, and he wants nothing to do with this world's so-called "heroes."

A step to the left (and right off the cliff) Summary: Team Seven starts off on a different foot and Sasuke's canonical journey to get stronger goes off the rails a bit. It all works out though. Probably.

Hi I wanted to ask for your thoughts on Kirishima in the current arc. In the past been built up as Bakugou’s friend and equal but he has barely played a part (at least not a visible one) during the big fight.

I don't know. I would just be disappointed if all we get for Kiri is a one-panel picture of him like we got with Momo.

OK, let's talk Kirishima.

First - let's talk about "Kirishima being built up as Bakugou's friend and equal"

This has been true mainly in Act 1 of the story. Bakugou started at a place where he looked down on everyone and saw them as extras not deserving his attention. Kirishima was the first person from the class who managed to get through to Bakugou the idea that everyone needs to rely on others and there are people who want to and can keep up. Bakugou at that point of the story badly needed that lesson.

But also, Kirishima being Bakugou's "equal" is to a large extent about Deku's POV. In the sense, that he saw Bakugou accept Kirishima as a friend in a way he never accepted Deku (at that point in the story). So it's partially also about how Deku viewed Bakugou's friendship with Kirishima vs his own relationship with Bakugou. So in the end, Kirishima's role here is a stepping stone to build the Bakugou-Deku dynamic to DvK2, and the culmination of Kirishima's own friendship with Bakugou. When Bakugou took Kirishima's hand, the character development Kirishima provided for Bakugou was done.

Like for many things, Kamino is a turning point in the BakuKiri dynamic too. Their emotionally important moments fade away as they each get a different focus. Their last truly significant and meaningful interaction is back all the way in Ch 133, where Bakugou pays back Kirishima by giving him his own much-needed push towards self-confidence.

Bakugou's arc post-DvK2 becomes almost fully Deku-centric, while Kirishima gets an entirely new focus with Mina, with a backstory introduced during the Overhaul arc. So Kirishima's most important focus goes from being the deuteragonist's "sidekick/friend" to being the main focus of a tertiary, underdeveloped character, which post-Overhaul really negatively impacts his role in the story.

I think Horikoshi still tried to do right by him as a fan favourite, by giving him 3 Red Riot chapters, one of the only multi-chapters villain solo fights that non-Deku kids got, plus a very hype moment in the previous war. But while Kirishima stays as Bakugou's friend in the sense that they sit next to each other or joke sometimes,

these interactions become rare, and also lacking emotional depth and are used increasingly as comic relief. Also, post-war a lot of even more serious KiriBaku interactions are not focused on themselves, but in a way mainly on Todoroki.

I think Horikoshi did set up Kirishima and Mina having a deeper emotional bonding around Midnight's death and facing Gigantomachia (which is a symbol of facing their fears), it's a plotline that got largely scrapped in Hori's hurry to finish the story, resulting in a really lacklustre "climax". So the KiriMina dynamic just never felt as deep or meaningful as the KiriBaku dynamic was.

And yes, the Kirishima riding Machia cliffhanger was one of those bait panels that in the end didn't mean anything, only setting up Mina focus, just like Mina's color page back in the PLF war arc was setting up Kirishima's big moment.

So I guess that makes them even.

But still, after getting to the battlefield, Kirishima's contribution in the fight vs AFO was to shield Shinsou (when Shinsou wasn't even mindcontrolling Machia anymore) once.

Which I guess is a "feat", but was certainly made look less impressive by the fact that All Might's suit did the same trick like 5 times before it broke, while Kirishima went down in the 2nd hit.

I think for a guy, whose power is about "keep standing through anything", it is a pretty thin showing.

So is that it?

If it is, I guess people will say that Kirishima and Momo had their highlight in the PLF War arc and should be happy with that as "side characters". Of course, then you could ask what about Tokoyami?

If Class A gets more role - which is what I'm hoping for still as long as Aizawa-Kurogiri are still in play - then all these second-line important characters in the class, who at the moment has got severely reduced roles like Kirishima, Tsuyu, Iida and Momo may get another moment and a more hype way to finish off their arcs. It would be really neat to revisit the old friendships and bonds.

As someone who loves Class A, I'm really rooting for this, but of course there is no way of telling. Horikoshi has shafted them many times over, especially post PLF war. As much as Class A was the hype leading up to this final arc, I don't think he managed to do right by most of them and certainly not in the sense that would bring back the feeling of nostalgia of Act 1, where most of us fell in love with this story.

So given his track record (see Aoyama plotline) with class A, Horikoshi may think that sticking Class A into All Might's suit was a perfectly satisfying way to say goodbye to them. (Which makes me so sad and angry.)

Which MHA centric tropes do you think is overused and not utilized well for its intended purposes or that the writers in questions just don't think about it?

Dadzawa, for example, is used to make Aizawa into a better teacher since he does absolutely suck in canon. What is shouldn't used for is to infantilized the 1-A students, especially Izuku, or to justify the bashing or pretending the existence of other adult characters.

Shinso-replaces-Mineta-in-1-A is used to instantly put Shinso in 1-A instead of Mineta simply because trying to write a character with perverted traits(which teenage boys would have) and using such characters can be hard. It's well known that many writers just prefer Shinso simply because he looks "hotter" than Mineta and that Mineta looks like a gremlin to them. This doesn't get to the fact the Shinso was a twig back then and likely didn't condition himself for the Entrance Exam.

Suspected UA Traitor Izuku. The original prompt was due to all of the attacks on UA, the tired Aizawa blames Izuku because of his notebooks and other situations that conveniently makes it looks like that Izuku was the traitor but Nezu and AM were on Izuku's side because they knew the truth about Izuku's situation. Now, outside of villain Izuku fics, this trope is primarily used to give Izuku angst and torture porn, on top of All Might bashing, Izuku losing all of his friends(except for Bakugo sometimes for shipping purposes), and making Dadzawa a thing even though it's Aizawa who would cause of the issues.

I've already gone on record as being strongly against Fanon!Dadzawa and the Suspected Traitor genre. Like, I have multiple posts on each of those and why they're bad.

As for Shinsou replacing Mineta, it's no secret that I've found Shinsou's preparation for UA lacking, but Mineta isn't just a character with an unfortunate deisgn--he doesn't have a personality. He's a one-note character who makes the same joke over and over again, and 'Guy Does Something Perverted And Gets Slapped' stopped being funny in the 1980s.

I've mentioned this before but the trope I hate the most that isn't here is Midoriya 'snapping' because of All Might telling him that he can't be a Hero and going from "I think that saving people is the greatest thing someone can do" (canon dialogue) to mass-murderer in about 0.5 seconds. Like, if you want Midoriya to be a Villain, there are way more interesting reasons for it.
