Daily Check-in: April 24, 2024 🎀

Wednesday started out so rough, I had a really bad stress breakdown from the pressure I was putting on myself for the exam I have today (Thursday), but luckily my dad was able to calm me down over the phone and my boyfriend motivated me and encouraged me. I don't feel as stressed out anymore, I know that I know the material and I'll do great! (it's a chemistry exam)

🩷 What I Accomplished:

studied chemistry for a good bit

completed 3 chemistry homework assignments

scheduled a make-up quiz for my psyc class

did the Total Body Pilates video from Blogilates

did the 11 minute Wake Up Yoga from Yoga with Adriene

did my morning skincare and journaling

actually, just did my entire morning routine and felt great about it

shipped off shorts I sold on depop

went to chemistry lecture to review for the exam

went to my virtual appointment with a registered dietitian and set some goals for the next 2 weeks

decided to join a step challenge with my health insurance company to win points (they have some cool things in their points shop, plus extra steps during the day is good for my health!)

washed my laundry

made a brain dump list for the remainder of the week

💞 Good Things That Happened:

I really like the dietitian I met with and have another appointment with her in 2 weeks

I really enjoyed using my new 40oz Simple Modern insulated tumbler cup

didn't let my stress breakdown make me go home, very proud of myself for sticking to my plans

went to sleep early

sold another item on depop!

I felt very reassured that I know the content that is going to be on my upcoming exam

the guy who makes sushi at my campus food court made sushi for me and held it until I went to get it so no one would buy it, i could've cried it was so nice of him

I drank coffee on campus and it didn't hurt my stomach for once!

💔 What Could've Gone Better:

need to put less pressure on myself

had some issues with food after my dietitian appointment (sometimes thinking too much about food can be triggering for me, tbh, but my goals are nutrient based which is helpful!!)

started crying before I went to bed because I was feeling oddly emotional (I think I'm starting my period soon)

had to turn down a work shift because I had too much school stuff and that appointment (I need the money so bad tho)

did not drink near enough water

need to be more patient and gentle with myself

also need to really figure out what's going on with my priorities, I keep struggling to do the things I say I'm going to do which is difficult for me to deal with sometimes

need to remember progress over perfection, 50% is always better then doing 0% of something

Who from the family is a theatre nerd? Is there more than one of them? And what is their favourite musical(s)?

For some reason I feel like at least one of them is secretly a huge fangirl/boy about theatre but doesn’t talk about it because it doesn’t seem like a ‘them’ thing to be into. Not to mention that they know they’ll be teased by the rest of the family for like, ever.

ok i’m gonna be honest, i don’t feel very confident in my musical knowledge. everything i know, i know from listening to my aunt, who used to be an actress and from the small list of musicals i’ve actually seen but—

Regina: total nerd when it comes to everything. this woman loves anything she can learn from so musicals are right up her alley. i could see her being a big fan of chicago and les misérables, or even rocky horror

Emma: doesn’t listen/go to musicals. she’d probably like rent though (and tbh so would Regina)

Snow: likes them in theory but not in practice. sound of music is probably her go to

David: this man is too busy listening to beyoncé to have much time for musicals but gets super excited when regina buys them tickets to see the lion king

Zelena: goes through a phase where she tries to listen to every musical she can (they’re mostly regina’s suggestions). wicked is her favorite though. the first time she watches it, she sings the songs at the top of lungs every chance she gets for like two weeks, effectively annoying the shit out of everyone else

Henry: knows a lot about musicals because of regina but doesn’t really think about them all that much on his own. likes dear evan hansen

Belle: total nerd like regina and soaks up any new information, no matter the media. hamilton and hadestown are her favorites

Again with Trudy y’all!

Okay SO! We all know that Trudy HAS to have excellent taste in music. Like look at her.

I’m sure this woman has been gradually building up her musical library since she could afford it and now she has like 10 000 songs or something.

I think she sings a lot by herself like just jamming as she works on her kestrel or does stuff around the lab and eventually she starts sharing the music with Spider.

So it becomes like a mama-son thing for to give him one of her earpieces and they just sing at the top of their lungs together and have dance parties. Trudy used to be way more private about people seeing her sing or dance but like after the shit she’s gone through on Pandora it seems pretty trivial, plus it makes the kid happy so she’s just like whatever.

I also think that Trudy would have a great voice. Like I think she’d have a strong belt with a bit of a rasp to it (think kind of voice like Persephone from Hadestown’s voice). Like she can go pretty deep in her voice, her range is good. She can’t hit super high notes though, her throat tightens up at those and just like refuses to work.

Spider also has incredible range. He’s been a good singer since he was a kid both in Na’vi and in English and Spanish. He just has an ear for music and he loves it because it’s a different form of storytelling for him. He can hit those high notes even as he grows older, not like soprano level but mezzo-soprano or something.

Now I’m not enough of a music connoisseur to give a definitive look at what Truyd’s taste in music is but I can try from what I know. I think her vibe would be like 80s and 90s rock and some indie music. Like Spider, she also really listens to the lyrics of songs and not just the sound so most of her song collection has what she considers to be meaningful lyrics, with only a few staple generic pop songs that she can’t help but like. I think she’d be into indie music as well and some grunge. The type of music that comes to mind from my limited knowledge would be Paramore, Pink, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Journey, Aerosmith, etc. I think she’d have some Taylor Swift songs up in there; though I’m not like a die hard Swiftie, I’ve listened to her lyrics and her writing is honestly great so yeah she’s on there. I also think her guilty pleasure would be musicals; she doesn’t even show Spider those at first because she had a bad experience for her fellow soldiers judging her about it when she first joined the army, but eventually Spider gets unlimited access to her collection. And he eats that shit up! Yet another form of storytelling for him to explore that mixes narrative and song and sound and she finds out because she finds him belting along to like a Heathers song or something cause he has already memorized the lyrics.

I also am so sure Trudy has some sort of sex playlist listed an an obscure name with some dirty songs. That isn’t really my area of expertise though so I don’t know what would be on there per se but yeah. Though I am picturing this one song I know called “Kiss or Kill”. I don’t think she’d have any songs on there that are like super explicit but more just capture the feeling of when she’s in a sexy mood. I’m also picturing Dove Cameron’s “Boyfriend” being on there.

And we can’t forget her roots! She’s gotta have a huge Spanish playlist. Again this is not my expertise but I have a friend who does know! So hopefully I will make like an update post for that to include some songs she would have on there soon! If anyone does have any ideas I’d love to hear them.

So yeah Spider and Trudy have song alongs and dance nights together and that fills my brain tbh.

In your WHAT!? lmao😭 I was malfunctioning after reading that💀 anyways....

So, the thing is that I wasn't very consistent during my college years tbh💀 like I didn't study everyday for couple of hours as most of the people suggests but still, I achieved a pretty good grade and was on the list of top students when I graduated (I graduated last year)

So, if you're thinking you're gonna fail, you are WRONG. I believe you can still make it!

So, what I did was, I used some study techniques. Which was -

Pomodoro method - well, I think it's pretty common now days. Every other student know about this I think? Basically, you study for half an hour *based you attention span because if it's short, you probably won't be able to focus for that long AT FIRST* then take 10 minutes of break and again continue it. I did it and my attention span grow much better after doing it a few times!

Warning: do not use social media or any other things where you can be distracted easily while you're on a break. Take a walk or listen to music or any other relaxing thing where you brain can adjust to the information you just consumed.

Music: music is something I listen to everyday and it helped me soooo much during my exams! NOT ANY CATCHY SONGS AND DEFINITELY NOT BTS OR KPOP🚫 do not listen to the songs to which you can dance, WE AREN'T HERE TO DANCE! we are here to study. When I said music, I meant instrumental and classic one! Listen to ambient music, piano mixed with rain sounds which will help to focus on your tast. There are some Gama sounds or something on YouTube I listened to, I don't remember💀 but listen to the music where you won't be distracted and your brain will be relaxed and help you to calm yourself so that you can focus more. Whenever I panicked about 'oh no I don't have time' or 'i won't be able to complete it' I just put some classic instrumental music on shuffle and immediately my mind relaxed. It was so helpful!

Focus: Now, ofcourse you know that you have to focus but you just.... can't, right? Yeah, that happened to me too! But, a little amount of focus right now can maybe make your life better. Maybe, if you get good grades you'll be able to go to your desired uni or your dream job or your life will be so good! I'm not saying that your grades can decide your future but what's so harmful about trying and giving your best, right? You know what you have to do to focus, hide your phone or any other distractions bla bla bla.... Everyone knows but no one applies because our brain can't let us, so tell me, why you're letting your brain control your actions? Wouldn't you be the one who will control your brain instead?

Remember, your little efforts today can make your tomorrow better.

Lastly, don't stress yourself out. Don't pressure yourself much. Don't worry. It'll be okay. The more you think 'Oh I'll fail' or 'I can't make it' or 'I don't have enough time' it will menifest in real life, instead focus on the tasks you have in-hand right now, make a strategy, devide those chapters, put some small challenges for yourself like 'I will complete this chapter in ____ amount of time' and focus on completing it and reward yourself afterwards with some food or a break.

Also, never forget to take proper amount of sleep. Let your brain rest and consume those knowledge you just pour into it all together because, now if I make you eat some food forceful and don't give you proper time to digest, you will have digestive problems or gas or even worse. Your brain is just like that. It needs nurturing just like any other part of your body.

Lastly drink water to keep yourself hydrated and eat your meals because if you don't even have nutrients and minerals in your body, how it will function properly? Then also, you brain won't be able to work.

So take care of yourself, focus, study and believe in yourself! I know you can do it.😊

(Disclaimer that I was not of legal drinking age when Torchwood was airing and therefore don't have a particularly good knowledge of the early 2000s Cardiff scene, so will be partially substituting it with what I think they'd like today as well.)

Ianto is a Fuel fan. Half of that man's pay-check goes on the digital jukebox, and he will pay extra to fast-track all of his songs and make everyone else listen to the most obscure and off-the-wall rock and metal bullshit. I feel like he'd also appreciate a good live music venue, and I'm thinking The Moon more than something like Brewhouse. The Owain only does live music on Fridays, but I think you'd find him there on the occasional Thursday doing the quiz.

Now listen, I love Gwen. I do, okay? I love her, and I hate to admit it, but you'd find her in a Popworld. You would absolutely find her on the dancefloor in Popworld. Do I think she'd buy too much of the shitty merch? I do. I absolutely do. She's got about 12 Popworld branded ducks scattered around her flat. The music has permanently damaged her hearing. She's having a great time.

He's not a Torchwood team member as such but Andy would love Roxy Lanes. He'd absolutely fucking love Roxy Lanes. Give this man a cocktail and stick him in the batting cages. Let him play shuffleboard, watch him accidentally launch a bowling ball into the wrong lane. Actually I think he'd love any of the clubs where you can play games, be it something physical like Roxy Lanes and Golf Fang, or the arcade machines in NQ64. I'm also very tempted to say that he'd like Ballie Ballerson, but I think that's just wishful thinking. This man has seen The Horrors, let him in the ball pit.

Owen I think would like Ten Mill Lane. Maybe like is the wrong word actually but I do think that's probably where you'd find him. Probably not on the dancefloor though. I don't know why I've picked Ten Mill because it's not wholly in character for him, but I can just feel it in my soul. I have just realised I've been primarily listing nightclubs and not bars, but it's fine. We're fine. I think him and Tosh would go on a date to The Alchemist. I think they'd both enjoy it, because they're both pretty nerdy in that way. (For those unfamiliar, The Alchemist is a cocktail bar and restaurant where some the drinks are science-themed. They've got drinks that change colour and they do things with like, dry ice and fire and they serve them in test-tubes and distilling flasks and it's very expensive but very cool.)

I kind of don't have Tosh pinned as a nightclub person, I'm gonna be super honest with you. So again I think something like The Alchemist or The Botanist. There's a Wetherspoons in Mermaid Quay which I think would get a lot of use from all of them tbh. She'd probably also like NQ64 to be fair. I want to say one of them would like Heidi's because that's our go-to on nights out but also I can't decide which of them would like Heidi's so I guess I'm gonna give that to Tosh. But she'd definitely join Ianto in The Owain on quiz night.

I 1000% do not have Jack pinned as a nightclub guy, I do think he'd probably pick a local that's not actually local to him, somewhere like the Andrew Buchan or the Albany. I know most Spoons are kinda technically independents but I don't have him down as a Spoons guy, he'd be like a proper old man and only go to actual locals. I think he'd take Ianto on dates to The Owain, it does good food and the drink aren't too bad price-wise. They'd do the quiz, they'd probably half pay attention to the sports and Ianto would complain about the quality of the coffee machine but still order a latte with his dinner.

Playlist Makes Brain Go Brrrrr

First off, the playlist in question here was created by the amazing @softomegaposting. They did and excellent job I'd highly recommend listening to it first, especially if you weren't familiar with the songs like me!

Vibe Assessment

I was really struggling to describe the tone of this playlist. To solve that, I....may or may not have roped in some of my irl music-loving friends.

I challenged myself to describe this playlist without mentioning omegaverse. These are the phrases I came up with: "utopian domesticity and All its vile implications", "calming your lover down like they're a feral animal", "you've been reduced to your body and pray you will transcend physicality", "bawling your eyes out as the credits of an indie romcom roll", and "healing a debutante of her tuberculosis despite knowing her illness is prized".

After many listen-throughs, I still stand by these descriptions, except for the tuberculosis one (though it has great potential to be for another dynamic).

I think it's interesting how you found songs that have shockingly great parallels to omegas. "Froot", "Calm Me Down", and "One Day Robots Will Cry" FLOORED me when I first heard them because of this. I thought the religious aspect to some of the songs was interesting; not only were they good portrayals of that nuanced worship, but it also fit into the late 20th century domesticity theme?? I don't know, it's just *chef's kiss*

"Sweet Nothing" by Taylor Swift, "Grenadine" by Dreadlight, "Impostor Syndrome" by Sidney Gish, "Los Angeles" by Sugarcult,

"Sweet Nothing" hurts the most if it's played directly after "Hey Good Lookin", which is what took it out of the Honorable Mentions category tbh. It is the only song I believe actively captures one of the listed descriptors

"Grenadine" feels like it has the most on-the-nose for feral animal energy, but I also feel like it doesn't nail the theme 100%? It has more of a 'man-eater' vibe than anything

"Impostor Syndrome" is just a personal favorite of mine, omegaverse aside. Content-wise, a song about feeling disturbingly different/lesser than others feels very omega-coded, at least by many verses' standards. Lines like "these sweet instincts/ruin my life" and "for canine/grossly overqualified" are just icing on the cake

LISTEN!!! “Los Angeles” is THE typical omegean heat story. This is the hardest song to place in the descriptors, since it's describing a common trope instead of the psyche of an omega, but I've thought about this song for too long to not mention it. There's something very omega in struggling between intimacy and just getting through the day, especially as you try to fight against the "heat".

"Self Defense" first entered the scene for the 'cheekbones and hormones' line, and remained because it felt on-theme in its somberness

"Summertime", "Sirens", and "the Detail" were just ones that stood out when I was pilfering through Spotify, and fit the musical themes enough for me to say "fuck it, someone could reasonably interpolate this probably"

1. Are you named after anyone?

Not to my knowledge. Online I go by Seyu

Adrian is my name irl. After watching Castlevania, I found out that Alucard's real name is Adrian Tepes- he's one of my favorite characters from that series, so it was a neat coincidence!

Seyu is a bastardization of Yasu/Sayo Yasuda's name. You can tell I've played too much Umineko, lol. Eventually it became a full "title", Seyune Koizumi-Hearn. That comes from the irish writer Lafcadio Hearn, who adopted a japanese surname upon becoming a citizen there (Koizumi Yakumo). I'm irish american myself, and it more or less felt right.

2. When was the last time you cried?

At my last job. Retail is miserable, and I'm glad to be out of that environment.

3. Do you have kids?

No- due to suffering from mental illness I'd prefer to not risk passing that on.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Sometimes, but not very often. Usually I just keep to myself instead of expressing it outright.

5. What sports do you play/have played?

Badminton. I'm rubbish at all other sports- badminton is the only one I'm decent at.

6. What's the first thing you notice about people?

Usually, how they come off while talking. Their appearances next.

7. What's your eye color?

Blue-grey

8. Scary movies or happy endings?

Both. Horror doesn't bother me much, tbh. If you've read my webcomic or the stories I write, there are mainly elements of psychological horror.

Drawing and writing. Singing as well- I've considered posting song covers

Maryland. I'd like to move back there someday. Right now, I live in rural Pennsylvania... it's the same state but with bad weather

Art, music, and writing. I've produced music before:

English and science. Math was my worst subject; I could never pass those classes no matter how hard I tried to study mathematics.

15. Dream job?

Graphic designer or author with illustrated books. Maybe a toy designer. Just any position where I can work in a quiet space with no interruptions, and make a decent salary for it.

Something remote would be nice as well. Either way I'd rather not try sales/customer service again.

Was tagged by @mechamullet to list 4 albums i’ve been listening to and i have no idea what i’m doing so here we gooooooooooooooooooooooo Everything Seems Better Now by vs self (2020) - A breath of fresh air into my emo music collection tbh. I love this band a lot, I have all their tapes, the zine they put out called Old Wounds, a t-shirt, and have a bunch of their stickers on everything. reflection by 아버지 (father) (2016) - Apparently people call this genre of music “Deathdream”, but who knows. All I know is that I really like it and it just really resembles that sort of quiet retreat back into onesself during moments of high stress and/or high-sorrow. Eat Your Dreams by Nelward (2020) - I’ve followed Nelward since he released Alive In Screen years ago and in my opinion his music has just gotten better and better ever since. A very very unique sound in my opinion that is very dance-worthy. It’s also very apparently to me that the dude knows his music theory. I don’t know any but some of the stuff he pulls off in some songs I can’t help but feel is due to just extensive music knowledge. summer death by Marietta (2013) - A quintessential midwest emo album, so many people will go on and on about how amazing this album is, and for good reason in my opinion. Some talk about it being very stereotypical midwest emo “whiny bullshit about ex-girlfriends” but I personally feel that this album touches on specific emotions relating to relationships (and particularly their ends) that other albums don’t quite do justice. Mainly the sort of loss of self that comes after a long-standing relationship’s end and the immense, immense struggle it is to try and not just sink into permanent inescapable sorrow and the all the cyclical, contradictory thoughts and patterns that come from bouncing back from that. keep in mind this is about MY opinions on LIVE ACTION matt. I have not gotten into any daredevil comics just yet but I'm planning on it - so i'm obviously not very knowledgeable about the comic version of the character!!

also we are going to disregard the "90s top 40 hits" comment from when he was with elektra for the music part

He doesn't focus on it that much in public settings or obviously as Daredevil, cause ofc he fights sweaty people in the darkened stinky alleys of Hell's kitchen, but I feel like his home would be spotless. A few spots of blood sometimes, but usually spotless

Also prefers non-alcohol, unscented or natural cleaning products ofc ofc (maybe even carries a little bottle of natural unscented hand sanitizer sometimes)

as for favorite scents, I feel like he'd love subtle sweet scents more than cologne or perfume- like the lingering smell of cinnamon or vanilla on Carver after she's been bak--- and for himself, relies on the fresh laundry and unscented shampoo for normal days, splurges with a very careful amount of traditionally musky or "manly" cologne for events. very particular about how and where he applies it.

doesn't like cooking that much even if he's amazing at it??

Foggy, in college, as the ultimate wingman, used to advertise those cooking skills to ladies

Also, Foggy has been begging for a recipe for something, that Matt has been refusing to give him for YEARS. They argue about it during holidays, especially thanksgiving when he brings that same dish or pastry to the Nelson family reunion (just to spite him)

Matt's cooking is also sometimes something they bet on! like if Matt loses he has to cook for Foggy or something. If Foggy loses he still cooks for him, but he just puts the bag or boxes in his office and doesn't mention it and leaves before Foggy can argue

He used to hate coffee but he grew to really love it over time, and is now specific about how he really enjoys it. (and bear with me here, has been searching for a perfect coffee place and well, well, well....what have we here....THE CHISEL MUAHAHAH)

In college he had a caffeine pill phase, when he hated it but needed the caffeine

Likes classical music! I feel like he'd really like Puccini. and Vivaldi. (Vivaldi used to be a priest, and was apparently nicknamed the Red Priest due to his red hair. how appropriate is that) - just late-baroque in general. Thinks Tchaikovsky or Mahler are cool too

Also likes old-school rap

ohhh and i can see him not like rock that much but i imagine his Dad making him listen to classic rock and telling him that "it's music at it's finest" and air-guitar to Hendrix or Santana to make him laugh. (tbh Jack has that "i used to play guitar" vibe to him.)

Doesn't listen to music as much as anyone else of course - but that's because there's a certain guilt to it. Matt would be someone who'd always want to stay alert, for his sake but mostly everybody else's. Shutting the world out by focusing on music feels almost selfish because what if someone needs help and he doesn't hear them, or not in time? For the same reason that he keeps pushing himself to save people or "bring justice" in his own way. He just wants to help and save everyone and doesn't allow himself to take proper breaks or relax.

But honestly, i feel like it'd be cute to imagine him reminiscing about music his dad showed him, or discuss composers with Father Lantom

3. Do you read your own fics?

Yes. I really enjoy reading my own fics tbh. I tend to write for small fandoms or rare pairs so there's not a lot of other content, so reading my own stuff really hits the spot. Also, after I get a nice comment, I tend to reread that fic with the knowledge of which lines people like best, which is always interesting!

6. If you plan, what does your planning process look like?

For one shots or just short fics, I make a little list of bullet points of key scenes I want to write. eg, here's my plan for chapter two of Are We On The Same Wavelength?

For multi chapter fics, I plan the broad plot and chapter outlines before I start - deciding POV, what happens, etc. I then plan out each chapter in more detail, in bullet points like above.

11. Do you write for yourself, or for the readers?

Both. I only write for fandoms, ships and characters that I enjoy, even if its not popular. But it's hard to ignore which are more popular and get more comments, so I find that if a certain ship gets more comments, I do favour it.

I do also enjoy prompt games and requests, so if you have a request for a drabble, I'm always happy to do it, as long as its for a fandom I write for already. It's a great place for new ideas!

But fandom is so connective, both always come togther.

18. Which is more difficult, the title or the summary?

For titles, I usually pick a song lyric which is pretty easy since I listen to music when I write.

Summaries are evil though, I've never been good at them. I have a formula I'm using at the moment - quote in italics + short summary + question at end to hook you in.

Where to begin with this one. My blaze knowledge is limited SOLELY to what she looks like. magical fire princess??? wtf but also goals. what takes this from odd to WEIRD is that whole second half of the sentence. every time I reread it I have to process it all over again. Like I could go for an Australian raccoon probably but it’s the waterbending one (1) time and never mentioning it again that really does it for me

Listen I don’t care about the first half of this fact, metal and shadow can do whatever they want forever. But SILVER MUGS TAILS??? I need an explanation immediately. Like, in an alleyway?? For money????? Why would you mug a BABY silver??!!!!

also in sonic boom they did an entire parody of “the telephone hour” from bye-bye birdy. the episode was not a bye-bye birdy parody nor was it 50s themed. it was about eggman not having a doctorate. the song was changed to be about eggman not having a doctorate. when the song ended, nobody ever mentioned it or did anything similar to that again.

Tbh, this one isn’t ENTIRELY outlandish. Like, I feel like it’s somewhat common for animated tv shows to do tribute bits that don’t make any sense in the actual canon. But the fact that it’s BYE BYE BIRDIE and also ABOUT EGGMAN. I need to hear this song immediately

I considered listing dead robot son alone but honestly that kind of tracks for me as a very comic book-y thing to happen. clone is like double the wacky comic book Energy but like okay sure. bodyguarding cream the rabbit (who if I’m not mistaken is a Small Little Girl yes??) sets this one over the edge. Like, why does cream need a bodyguard? Why choose to be her bodyguard? Does the clone have a relationship with sonic? Like I have many questions

a lil post on my experience seeing weezer + green day this saturday :)

weezer was one of my favourite + most listened bands when i was between 12-14 something? but since i’ve mostly just listened to the same songs and haven’t been keeping up with them that much. but when the hella mega tour was announced i was pretty envious of the people who got to see both them AND green day... so when it became clear they’d come with them to sweden i was beyond thrilled. and since i’ve never seen them live before i might even have been more hyped about them than green day lol, even though i didn’t know how they’d be live. 

they turned out to be great - really nice energy and sounded just as good as in their records. and i was pleased to hear they played many of their older songs! they started out by playing hash pipe which is probably my favourite of their songs, hearing the riff i immediately turned around to scream at my friend (who hadn’t even heard of them before the concert lmao). they played like all their biggest hits which were amazing to finally get to hear live, plus the newer songs a little bit of love and all my favourite songs, and covers of enter sandman and africa (which got the non-weezer-fan part of the audience excited as well). some fun audience interaction, rivers spoke quite a bit of swedish which was fun (said “grymt” a lot which basically means “wicked”).

i stood really close to the stage but off to the side a bit, on the same side as brian bell which was amazing since he was my fave back then (imagine 13 year old me hearing i’d stand just a few metres away from him...) so i felt really lucky to say the least. he played at least 4 instruments that night too. but yeah i was super stoked the whole way through and they played many songs (ended with the iconic buddy holly); they were listed as an opening act on the ticket but it felt more like they were half the show which seems fair considering how legendary they are tbh. what a good time.

after having been to their two previous tours i feel fairly familiar with green day’s concert repertoire at this point, and this time it wasn’t very different. but there’s always the same indescribable feeling (they are my forever favourite band after all). bohemian rhapsody played, then hey ho let’s go as the bunny appeared, then starting out with a bang (american idiot and holiday). the setlist was very similar to previous tours with the essential ai songs, a selection of 90s singles (was very pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of brain stew which iirc i don’t think i’ve heard them perform before? complete with mike screaming and all. amazing), and 21 guns+know your enemy. the only new song they performed was pollyanna (and the rock n roll all nite cover) which was nice but i was a little disappointed that they didn’t perform any of the songs from foamf, because there are some songs i absolutely adore on that album and was hoping they’d play. i know it’s been a few years since they released it by now but as this concert originally was supposed to take place in 2020 you can’t convince me they didn’t plan to put any in at the start. oh well.

it was obvious they enjoyed being back on tour though, billie mentioned several times how good it was to finally see it happening. the members are literally 50 years old now but they still have endless energy and sound just as great as always. many audience interactions, but compared to other shows i’ve been to there wasn’t as much talk between the songs or funny antics (like during king for a day for example). but what was lacking in talks was made up for with adlibs and screams and stuff, i loved the energy overall. i really liked tré’s drum solo and jason freese’s saxophone part too. both the fans they brought onto the stage to sing (know your enemy) and play guitar (knowledge) did really well which is always a relief.

the arena was well-equipped with air conditioning and helpful staff; the show itself had some really cool lighting, visual effects on the screens and pyrotechnics going on (more than i’ve seen before) as well as a confetti rain at the end. i stood just as close to the stage as i did back when i saw them in oslo but on the other side, so close to jason white this time which made a fun change (did still go “MIKE!!” once he finally came over though lol).

one of my favourite bits is and will always be hitchin’ a ride, both because it’s one of my absolute favourite songs, and because it’s such a beast live with fun audience involvement and all. also, lastly they played all of jesus of suburbia (billie subbed in ‘ukraine’ instead of ‘anaheim’ in that one part of i don’t care), everyone but billie left the stage and he had a short but sweet talk thanking the fans for waiting for them, then played time of your life as tré and mike joined him towards the end. when it was over it felt empty as always, maybe more so because it felt like it was a shorter set than usual? or maybe that’s just me wanting more lol.

anyway it’s not my first concert since the pandemic but it was the best. went with a friend who’s a very casual fan which was also really fun (she was super impressed). hope i’ll be able to see both bands soon again.

There's a couple of Caucasian BNF-lites on here in the BTS fandom who are real microaggression factories. One common thread is refusing to disclose their racial identity (as in, they won't say they are white because they see requests for transparency as aggressive and demanding) even as they discourse at length about how BTS are selling out their Korean identity by recording English singles rather than it being an obvious pandemic strategy/Grammy bid. There was one who acted like being a white non-American Anglophone from the First World was a marginalized, much-appropriated identity. It reminds me of the anon from yesterday who acted like "Westerner" is a slur. The mentality of concern trolling and self-victimizing is the same.

Sigh. I don't think anyone should have to disclose if they're just going about their business, but I've run into this type of person in other fandoms, and yeah... (I have no idea who's who in BTS fandom on Tumblr. My exposure is friends' discord and people who come to my inbox.)

You can have cultural competency without being ethnically [whatever], but if you're pontificating about your Authentic Knowledge, people are going to ask you how you know. I have a couple of friends who grew up in Japan who aren't Japanese. I know plenty of people who majored in some other country's literature, including plenty who read my tumblr. It's fine to claim competency when you actually have it. You don't have to be a weird dick about it.

The fact that these people aren't willing to just go "I've lived in Korea for a while teaching English" or "I've been in kpop fandoms for 10 years" or something tells me they know perfectly well they don't have enough cultural competency to back up their claims.

If they're from Europe, they should especially shut the fuck up about BTS singing in English unless they want to look at in terms more like "Gosh, it kind of sucks that to win Eurovision, you pretty much have to sing in English or maybe French. Shouldn't we be encouraging more appreciation for songs you have to look up the lyrics to?"

Which, tbh, is a position I personally do hold. I think it's terrible that market forces so strongly push pop artists towards a lingua franca, and I think it's even worse that it's so frequently English instead of more of a mix of a few different big languages.

(I think some level of this is inevitable. There will always be languages with greater cultural reach and languages that get the short end of the stick. It's just the current extreme level I object to and think could plausibly change. I'd like to see more things like KARD's kpop with a lot of Korean lyrics but pandering choruses in Spanish and moombahton beats.)

But the idea that BTS of all groups are being unfaithful to their artistic inspiration by focusing on English? I think some people need to go listen to Hip Hop Lover again and look up the names therein!

BTS' most recent all-English songs are some of my least favorite of their oeuvre, but the mere fact of them wanting to get good enough at English to do more in it is both an obvious step for their careers and highly authentic to their teenage selves. Hating on them being into English is like hating on some weeb majoring in Japanese, for fuck sake.
