The End Is A Lie
Part Five: In which the Narrator has to resume his story without our protagonist
(part one — > [x], part two —> [x], part three —> [x] part four —> [x] )
"HEY MISS! YES YES, YOU. STOP SLEEPING, GET OFF THE CHAIR AND LEAVE THE ROOM #427! PLEASE!” The voice sounded very loud and very insistent.
Chell opened her eyes, shook her head in annoyance, and climbed out from behind the cluttered, paper-strewn desk. She looked around and concluded that she was once again in that small office room belonging to Employee #427. It weighed heavily on her. Again.
"Oh, so now you are finally awake?" the same voice inquired, lowering its tone slightly, "I must say, you slept quite soundly. Perhaps you had a very pleasant dream, didn't you? You probably thought (how arrogant of you!) that I have been gazing at your smiling sleepy face all this time? Oh, no no no! That would be far too flattering for you. Trust me, I would never waste my precious time admiring your sleeping face... Miss, stop frowning and looking around as if I'm right behind you! Did you—no, you clearly misunderstood me, oh dear! I suppose I need to clarify," his voice became deliberately serious, "Young lady, you are of no interest to me. I hope those words didn't hurt your ego too much. No? Good. Now, let's get back to our topic. As I mentioned before, you have mistaken the office room. Please leave the hallway."
Chell silently followed the Narrator's words, doing so only because she needed to move forward. After all, she had promised herself to escape from this trap. And she would do it. Chell always believed that from any, even the worst situation, there was a way out. If you just used your brain a little. That's precisely what she was doing right now, diligently trying not to be distracted by the Narrator and completely ignoring him. But, to her deepest annoyance, his voice was utterly impossible to ignore. On the contrary, the Narrator's voice was so pleasant to the ear that she couldn’t help but listened to it.
"In my Story, I wrote about how all of Stanley's colleagues mysteriously disappeared," the Narrator continued, "That means you shouldn't be here. This is not your Story, Miss. This is the story about Employee #427. And what's your number? Let me take a look at your name tag... ah, so you are Employee #1498. What are you even doing here? Your office room, it’s... hmmm... is it somewhere in the utility floors? Or not? I hope you remember... wait, where are you going? Ah, the left door. Decided to follow the plot, huh? Oh, too bad you are not Stanley. By the way, have you happened to see him anywhere? Hmm? You don't know what he looks like? Strange. Well, let me think... ah, yes. Lanky, unattractive young man, wearing a plaid shirt. He also has crooked ears, big eyes and a creepy smile. No? You have never seen him at all? Blast it, where could he have gone?..."
Meanwhile, Chell slowly climbed the stairs to the Boss’ office with a firm intention to open the door in the fake fireplace, deactivate the Machine, and escape from the Office. Entering the lavishly furnished office, she approached the keypad and quickly entered the password: two, eight, four, five. The panel emitted an affirmative beep. The sound of mechanisms opening the fireplace was heard. Chell stepped into the elevator and pressed its large button with a downward arrow. Apparently, in this company, whatever was it called, the local Boss had an obvious fondness for big red buttons. Especially ones with black arrows. It's just a shame she only had one option. No choice at all. So, she pressed the button. The elevator creaked but didn't budge. Chell pressed the button again, applying a bit more force than necessary. The button sank into its metallic casing and couldn't be pressed anymore. The elevator still didn't move. Frustrated, Chell sighed and returned to the Boss's office. Sitting down in one of the chairs, she crossed her arms and stared up at the ceiling, where, according to her calculations, the Narrator could be watching her through a hidden camera.
“Did you really think I would let you go?” his voice smirked a couple of minutes later. “Oh, no. Of course not. I could have just deleted you, like everyone else, long before you reached the room with the choice. But I didn't do that. Do you want to know why? I became curious, so I decided to wait for a bit. And there is it, Chell pressed the button, but the elevator didn't move. She pressed the button again. I made no attempts to stop her. And here we go; she broke the button and achieved nothing with it. So, why do you think this happened? You had a chance! Only this time, you could have become the main character! You could have finished my Story. You could have been Stanley. But alas, you simply can't be Stanley, just like he himself can't be someone else," the Narrator sighed. Silence fell. And so what? What did he mean by that? the woman thought, gazing at the ceiling. He is just wasting time.
What's next?
Chell silently continued to sit in her chair and wait. She had no other choice since the elevator wasn't going anywhere and the doors were locked. She didn't make any further attempts to open them, vividly remembering her previous experience trapped on the iron walkway with the wall of countless screens. She got up from the chair, approached the shelves, and began to boredly examine books placed on them. What do we have here? ‘Accounting’, ‘Fundamentals of Marketing’... deadly boring! Suddenly, Chell's gaze stopped on one of the books. It was unbelievably thin and small. Moreover, its red spine had no title. The woman reached and pulled it out from the tight row of brown volumes. A barely audible sound reached her sensitive ears... a bell? Some kind of melody?
“What the—what do you mean, I don't have the access!?” the Narrator’s grumble reached her. Somewhere off-screen, the rustling of papers and the sound of rapid clicking of keyboard buttons could be heard. “I apologize,” his voice sounded slightly out of breath. “It turns out I can't delete you. I'm afraid you'll have to stay in the Game for a little longer until I figure out how to fix this.”
The girl carefully studied the bookshelves, occasionally pulling out books without titles and carelessly throwing them onto the ground. There were eight such books. Two red, two green, two yellow, and two blue. Chell picked up one of them, a red one, and opened it to a random page. Blank pages. How predictable. She placed the book on the right shelf. Somewhere in the distance, a familiar melody of bells tinkled. So, when the books are arranged incorrectly, a sound signal is activated...
“Cheeelley,” - the Narrator seemed to trace and elongate her name in the air, causing Chell, who had been fully immersed in her thoughts, to startle and drop the remaining two books from her hands. “Why are you rearranging the books? Well, you don't have to bother answering, I already know. Of course there could be a second secret door here! A completely secret very well hidden door behind the bookshelf! What an original and fresh idea! I simply couldn't resist adding it to my game! Alright, I won't interfere with your ridiculous attempts to solve a non-existent puzzle. Such efforts undoubtedly deserve a chance of success. I'll even cross my fingers for you, Cheeelley,” and his voice mockingly stretched out her name yet again. The woman frowned, almost physically feeling how his mocking words pierced her eardrums like sharp needles, but stubbornly continued arranging the books according to the scheme that had formed in her mind.
When Chell placed the last yellow book on the second bottom shelf, a loud click echoed through the office. The bookshelves trembled menacingly.
“And I did add a second secret door indeed,” the Narrator said in a tone devoid of any expression. ”How could I forget that?” The bookshelf slowly moved up to the ceiling, revealing a huge square passage.
“It seems too dark there, don't you think, Chell? And what if...” The girl looked up at the ceiling and pressed a button located on the side opposite of the bookshelf. The corridor was instantly illuminated.
“...Yes yes, I understand that you love adventures, Chell. And you know what? I like that. So let's forget about the past and move forward. I'm sure we'll work together just fine. I think Stanley, wherever he may be now, will forgive me if I temporarily suspend the search. So, onwards! Towards a new Story!”
As soon as Chell stepped into the revealed secret passage, a repulsive screech rang out, causing her ears nearly curl up. She looked up and saw a huge stone slab flying relentlessly straight towards her.
“Are you kidding me?!” the woman yelled and rushed in the opposite direction, towards the first fork in the corridor where the ceiling was white and completely motionless.
“I didn’t do anything!” the Narrator yelled back, just as shocked as Chell.
A second before the woman almost reached the salvation of the turn, the heavy stone slab fell down, covering a large part of the corridor with a bone-crushing crash, engulfing it in a whirlwind of concrete dust and shattered glass fragments.

you wear katsuki’s clothes to bed.
among all your cotton and silk pajamas, you prefer the thinning fabric of his faded tees. there are holes in some of them, just a few more seams away from their undoing as they fit far too large on you—but that’s why you love them.
they’re comfy and worn; lived in with love from the man that you love. when katsuki is gone for days or weeks at a time, you find his warmth intertwined within the threads of his t-shirts. when the fabric presses against your back, the bed doesn’t feel nearly as empty as it is.
(though it can never replace him. nothing can, you fear.)
“hoggin’ all my shirts,” he tuts, but you know it means nothing. the roll of white fabric is neatly folded unto itself, its crisp corners unfurling once handed over.
you giggle, shaking off its folds and fitting the hem right over your head. from the corner of your eye, you see katsuki’s gaze, watching you wrangle the fabric over you as the towel wrapped around your body slowly drops to the floor.
he turns away then, a little too quickly, a little too abruptly. if you look at him now, you’re sure you’ll find flushed cheeks and crimson eyes burning in shame for wanting you so inopportunely.
“guess you’ll just have to take me with it then.”

lmao so i was just going through my camera roll and clearing some photos out, when i stumbled across this screenshot i took in january of 2020 and…
Tumblr media
i’m in shock. i literally don’t know how i forgot this happened, like i was actually astounded when i found this. NEVER forget when steve rogers’ ending was so horrifically out-of character that SEBASTIAN STAN HIMSELF posted a screenshot to instagram of a tweet dogging on his ending. it’s been years and i still haven’t forgiven marvel. i don’t think i ever will.

Touchy subject
"The 501st was one of the best legions during the war. I've lost a lot of good men over the years - some of them would have given even you Mandos a run for your credits. And my general... My general was a good man too, but that's enough of that, I thought you were too old for bedtime stories by now."
Din just tried to figure out what the colour of the clones' armor paint meant, and why he's never heard Rex mention his CO during all the wartime stories and lectures; whereas he's already got to meet Wolffe and his general and even heard Cody mention his every once in a blue moon. (Special thanks to @witchydom for helping with the "dialogue" :3)
The rest of my Star Wars meets Hades AU project is here
I'll take a bit of your time to give a bit of an explanation why I decided to put Rex in Skelly's spot:
During a playthrough when I was looking for screenshots to use as backgrounds the first thing that greeted me was Zagreus calling Skelly "Captain" upon entering the armoury, or whatever that chamber is called. And that really decided it, let's be honest. Rex is Captain, and that is the Captain's spot. End of story.
Reading "still got it" by qigiined even before I got into watching TCW was such a personality defining experience (seriously, this fic lives forever rent free in my brain), that I really had no other option but to put the few clones that I'm willing to work into this AU somewhere around home base (the covert) - so you can guess where Cody and Wolffe are situated. Or will be, hopefully soon enough. Rex needs to be able to hang out with Cody, that's just how it is. (Rebels and TBB canon who?)
Rex deserves to teach some uppity Mando bounty hunters and other warriors who think too much of themselves a few lessons in humility and some crafty tricks. I think it would be very good for him.
As a throwaway note since we are already under the read more section, I've been thinking about sigils and keepsakes (trinkets) and cthonic companions (I know that over a year ago I inaccurately but very self indulgently designed one for Din, Boba and Cobb, that is not the point now) and while Cody can have one shaped like Boga, and Wolffe can obviously get a stuffed loth wolf (and Bo-Katan a very squishy owl)... I have no idea what shaped companion Rex could have. If anyone has any suggestions and would love to share it with me, I'd be very grateful!

The End Is A Lie
Part Six: A few restarts later our protagonist makes a choice
(part one — > [x], part two —> [x], part three —> [x] part four —> [x] part five —> [x]) GLaDOS stirs her dough in a cement mixer and tells Stanley that she will bake a chocolate cake. She decorates her festive table with garlands made of colorful wires. GLaDOS tells him tests will soon be over. She promises Stanley that he will be set free, but, first of all, there will be a big party. Isn't that great, right? He thinks they will have a great time. So he tries. A test subject #427 simply does what is expected of him. When Stanley finishes another test, he enters a round elevator and presses a button. He exits on the top floor and walks towards a large white door. He raises his hand, allowing a shiny panel to release a needle and draw a small amount of blood from his ring finger. Everything is normal, just as it should be.
"DNA verification is successful," a cool voice pronounces. The door opens and he enters the room. Colorful wires hang from the ceiling to the floor. Some of them slide onto him. Stanley pushes them away from his head and approaches a big square iron table. On its clean and polished surface sits a white plate with a cake resting on it. It is a big, magnificent cake, drizzled with chocolate syrup and adorned with exquisite canned cherries, drowning in a cloud of whipped cream and melted caramel. And, most importantly, it is a real fresh cake. Stanley picks up a sharp table knife lying next to a stack of paper napkins. His hands tremble slightly with excitement, so the first piece turns out a little uneven. He carefully transfers the slice of cake to a dessert plate, sits on a chair, then picks up a fork and gently spears a small cherry, but immediately stops, not bringing it to his mouth. His gaze shifts to the blinking eye of a video camera attached to the ceiling. GLaDOS says nothing. She remains silent even when he cuts the cake himself. But should she say anything? Isn't her voice just a pre-recorded message? Unfortunately, Stanley knew absolutely nothing about GLaDOS. He didn't even attempt to decipher the full meaning behind her ‘name’. The test subject #427 had never worked in the Test Department. Moreover, in reality, he wasn't even a test subject of this laboratory! But then why is he dressed in an orange jumpsuit, wearing strange boots around his feet, with a portal gun resting on his knees and holding a fork with a cherry plucked from the cake? "Hello, Stanley." "!!!" Startled, #427 jumps. The cherry impaled on the fork slips from his hand and falls to the ground. Automatically, Stanley leans under the table, picks it up, places it back onto the plate, leans back on the chair's backrest and begins scanning every inch of the ceiling with his gaze. "Yes yes, I am also glad that you can hear me again, Stanley," assures the Narrator. "I understand you might be surprised that I managed to break through here, but that's no reason to make such ugly faces at me... and why do you need a knife?" His voice sounds concerned. "I don't know what happened to you without me, but your mental state is definitelly off. Stanley, why... why are you trying to cut this iron table? Stop damaging the government’s property! Oh, so you are finished? I hope you have calmed down. Good, now slowly put the knife on the table, get up and leave this room, and I'll open the door... what? Oh, you want to try the cake? No you don’t! Absolutely don’t, Stanley. I assure you, this cake is fake. Take a closer look. See? It's made of..." "You shouldn't interfere," a female voice interrupts, rudely silencing the Narrator. "Disabling voice messages. Eighty-eight percent completed... pay no attention, test subject #427, it's -temporary technical glitches. Error. Don't try to hinder me. Changing password. Error. Enabling restricted use of system equipment. Critical error. Not bad, but futile. Let's see how you deal with this. Initiating a forced server disconnection..." The video camera rotates twice on its axis, emitting a tragic beep and shuts down. The door opens. "You managed to bypass my security?" GLaDOS asks with slight surprise. "But you couldn't. Exceeding authority. You have no right to connect to... Updated. Access granted for unrestricted use. Why? How did you do this? No! It can't be you! Cancel previous operation... Error. Requesting user statistics... Error. Excellent, whoever you are, you have achieved your goal. I'll have to listen to your stupid babbling. I hope you're satisfied now..." "Stanley! Hurry, run away from there while the door is open!" the Narrator shouts. #427 pushes the plate with his untouched piece of cake aside and gets up. "Where are you going? Don't leave. The party is just beginning," GLaDOS' voice is calm and cold, as if ice. "Don't listen to her, leave! You can't stay here, Stanley! Please, listen to me! We are friends, Stanley! You... you remember, right?.. I created you, gave you a name, wrote your Story... of course you must remember! I'm honestly trying to help you!.." "What?.. Am I your friend? Seriously? You only say that because you don't want to start the game all over again! Or not?.." #427 stops in front of the door. "Don't listen to him, stay here," GLaDOS insists gently. "You like the cake, don't you? I know. Stay and try it." "And you... you just enjoy conducting tests. Over and over again, until I get tired and drop dead somewhere. On one hand, jumping through portals is a bit more interesting than choosing office doors. But on the other hand, I don't really like lasers and traps..." #427 ponders. "NO!" the Narrator exclaims desperately. "Stanley, this will lead you to death! Believe me, she wants to get rid of you! I don't want to start all over again!!" "See! I knew it!.. Well, damn it, I'll decide for myself what to do!" Stay? Leave? This could be the most important choice, Stanley thought. He needs a moment to consider everything.
Meanwhile, the Narrator and GLaDOS begin to argue, interrupting each other and ending up as an incoherent stream of words. Stanley covers his ears with his hands, but it's useless; their voices sound loud and incredibly persistent, not giving him the slightest opportunity to calmly consider his choice. "Shut up!" he spits out loud with irritation. But the Narrator and GLaDOS ignore him, engrossed in their quarrel with each other.
It's unbearable.
Stanley feels like his head will explode if he spends another minute in this room, so he comes to the only decision; escaping from this couple as far as possible while they are occupied with their ‘dialogue’ and not paying attention to his actions.
Stanley grabs his portal gun and shoots a blue portal beyond the doorway and a red one into the nearest white wall. With his free hand, he inexplicably grabs his knife and, affectionately holding it close to his chest, jumps into the second portal.

Topics of conversation among the elven party come to visit Minas Tirith for Aragorn and Arwen's wedding:
Whether the paintings and tapestries of legendary events made by the city's denizens are accurate
Whether Glorfindel should be shown tapestries depicting his fall
Balrogs don't look like that
Whether Osgiliath really was as pretty as they say
Whether Osgiliath or Annuminas was prettier
Whether the Rohirrim resemble the house of Hador much
Whether Aredhel would have gotten on well with Eowyn (difficult question because on the one hand - gestures at everything - and on the other: Aredhel was a difficult person at times, had never met one of the secondborn and would likely have mortally offended the other within ten minutes)
Another Gondorian woman looking a bit like Lúthien
Why do Lúthien look-alikes turn up generations upon generations after Elros
Does Minas Tirith feature too many stone walls and too little greenery
Is there something wrong with the Noldor for not minding being cooped up within stone walls
There having still been far more greenery in Tirion last time the exiles had been there (7000 years ago)
Whether Tirion was much changed when Glorfindel last saw it (3000 years ago)
Whether Gondorians naming their children after Túrin of all people is taking things a bit too far
Whether an inkeeper should be informed his prized family heirloom is an elvish dinner knife
Whether a courtier should be informed his prized family heirloom had been made by Curufin because on the one hand he might consider it cool, and on the other hand - Curufin
Whether a certain type of cake should best be eaten hot or cold
Can you use osanwë accidentally and is it cheating if it happens while you're playing bridge

I am very sick so this is the last thing I am going to say on the subject. The instigating event for miles heroism & eventual escape the narrative quest was saving a cop from death. Miles’ goal and journey is to alter reality so that cops do not have to die in his story and spidermen can save the cops they care about. Core to the central plot of atsv is a view of cops as sympathetic & heroic individuals in need of saving instead of as a tool for enacting state violence and perpetuating systemic oppression. Which is copaganda.
