Jesse Eisenberg is so incredibly underrated as Lex Luthor in Batman V Superman. While his portrayal wasn’t what I would have envisioned from the character, Jesse puts so much force and charm that despite his dorky demeanor he did a great job in selling Lex as a dangerous force of nature.

The scene when Superman confronts him on the rooftop is perhaps one of the many highlights of the film. How despite the fact that Superman could have thrown him into space if he wanted to, Lex was still able to cripple Superman emotionally and manipulate him to do his bidding and he did all of that without having to resort to using kryptonite or battling him with a power suit.

As far as I’m concerned Eisenberg is right up there next to Gene Hackman, Michael Rosenbaum, and Clancy Brown in terms of great depictions of Lex Luthor. And I am truly hoping they bring him back for Justice League.

This was before Justice League was released in Nov. 2017 and we got what we got....no Darkseid.

How Batman v Superman sets up the DC Cinematic Universe

There’s a reason why Batman v Superman went with the title Dawn of Justice, not only did it feature showdown between the two powerhouses but it helped set up a bigger universe. How exactly did it do that? I’ve got you covered.

Batman’s History

In Batman v Superman it’s revealed that Bruce Wayne has been Batman for 20 years. In that time he remained a mystery to the public but two decades of crime-fighting leaves a lot of history and we get a few glimpses of it in the movie. First theres the old Robin suit in the Batcave with the words “Hahaha Jokes on you Batman” written on it. Second, Bruce mentions Gotham has a bad history with people dressed as clowns, a clear reference to the Joker. These two things indicate that Batman did have a sidekick at one point and had been killed by the Joker in some kind of showdown, but that’s just my theory. Third, Wayne Manor has been burned down and is uninhabitable, forcing Bruce and Alfred to live in a nearby lake house. Maybe in future movies we might find out how these things happened or get some kind of explanation. With the new Suicide Squad film coming out in August and Ben Affleck set to appear as Batman, it could give us more backstory on what happened between him, the Joker and the dead Robin.

Wonder Woman’s History

When Bruce accesses Lex Luthor’s encrypted files he discovers a photo of Diana Prince a.k.a. Wonder Woman. The photo shows her in battle during World War I alongside several other characters. This includes the character Steve Trevor played by Chris Pine. This almost certainly means we’ll see this photo taken in the Wonder Woman movie out next year.

The Meta-Human Theory

This is a big one. The reason Lex Luthor wants to get kryptonite to stop Superman is because he has a theory that other Super powered people exist and humanity needs to be protected from them. This is a theory that Senator Finch is also aware of. Later we realize this isn’t a theory at all and Lex has video proof that these people exist.

The Knightmare

In the middle of the film Bruce Wayne has a dream where he’s trying to get kryptonite in a post-apocalyptic world. However he realizes he’s been set up by an army of Superman worshipers. There’s a huge Omega symbol burned in the Earth and Bruce is attacked by parademons. If this is a dream it most likely comes from Bruce’s subconscious and his fear of Superman, but the Omega symbol and parademons are harder to explain if it is just a dream. Is this a premonition of what’s to come, then there’s a huge battle on the way.

The Flash

Immediately after the Knightmare, Bruce Wayne sees something. A white light with a red being in the middle of it. This is definitely Ezra Miller as the Flash traveling through time. Traveling from where and what for? We don’t know. We also don’t know if Bruce took any of what he said to heart. Flash says that “Lois Lane is the key,” and that he “came too soon,” “You were right about him,” and “You’ve got to find us.” Lois Lane being the key could refer to Lois finding the kryptonite spear in this film or it could be something in the future. The he “Came too soon” is probably a reference to the fact that Bruce doesn’t know about The Flash yet and he arrived too soon in the timeline where Bruce isn’t recruiting the Justice League. The “You were right about him” may mean that Superman does something bad in the future or he could be talking about Lex Luthor or someone else entirely. “You’ve got to find us” is the one bit of advice that Bruce does seem to follow at the end of the movie.

Lex Learns Secrets From the Kryptonian Ship

When Lex boards the abandoned ship the computer tells him it has information from 100,000 galaxies. Lex then asks the computer to teach him, we don’t know what he learned exactly but I think that’s how he found out how to create Doomsday from Zods body and how he came into contact with something other worldly. This will also serve as a nice tool for future movies to explain how Lex knows anything.

The Justice League

So far we have Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. But what about the rest of the league? When Diana Prince opens the other files from Lex’s computer we see a man who can run really fast, a man living underwater, and a man called Dr Silas Stone creating a half man half machine at S.T.A.R. Labs. That’s the Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg. Plus Dr. Stone has what appears to be a Mother Box which is a piece of alien technology that has ties to a major DC villain. At Clark funeral, Bruce tells Diana that they have to find people like her because they need to fight. Diana ask why there going to have to fight and Bruce says he has a feeling. What could they be fighting? Well that now brings me to…..

Darkseid

In the film’s final moments, Batman threatens Lex Luthor in prison and Lex tells him that the bell has been rung. “He’s hungry and he’s coming,” Lex warns. The film then cuts to Luthor’s dad’s painting which shows a battle between heaven and hell. The painting has now been flipped so that Hell is coming from the sky. Earlier in the film this was a reference to Superman, now it’s a reference to something greater, something called Darkseid. Darkseid is basically the DC equivalent of Marvel’s Thanos. Darkseid is an unstoppable, god-like alien from the planet Apokolips who wants to eliminate free will from the universe and uses the Omega symbol as his logo. He’s a powerful villain who may end up showing up in Justice League movie which is out November 2017.
