What people think why i became a bookbinder: Oh she wants to explore her artistic horizon with those pretty leather bound books of hers. She even gives them out as gifts to her friends. It most likely helps her with anxiety or maybe she just wanted a more special costume made notebook.
Why I actually became a bookbinder: I just illegally downloaded and printed out several of my favourite fanfics and books and started binding them into books cuz I love reading them but looking at screens for too long gives me headaches.

Prompts for writing human connection, intimacy, belonging.
Hand-holding
The purest form of human connection.
tiny hands in big hands
calloused hands in soft hands
cold hands in warm hands
hands with the perfect ratio to each other for hand-holding
platonic hand-holding
running their thumb over the other’s hand
dancing with their hands holding onto each other
squeezing hand for comfort and encouragement
holding hands across the table
happily doing everything with just one hand, if it means they don’t have to let go
not wanting to lose each other in a big crowd
possessive hand-holding
linking hands together during sex
grabbing hand to show them something
loosely holding onto each other’s hands, laying in one’s lap
only linking the pinkies together, not ready to let go completely
holding hands while skating
excitedly grabbing each other’s hands during a concert, jumping up and down together
playing with each other’s fingers
pressing the other’s hand against their cheek
holding hands while one is balancing on a small wall
grabbing the other’s hand to pull them back from something
holding hands under the table
only realizing it when they have to let go
standing in front of each other, holding both their hands
holding their hands above their head, fingers linked together
passionate hand-holding
grabbing the other’s hand so they don’t fall
holding hands while running through the rain
brushing against each other, linking fingers together for a second
grabbing their hand to grab their attention
not really paying attention, both doing something else, but still holding hands
bandaging the other’s hand and not quite letting go
holding hands while driving
grabbing the other’s hand to pull them back to them
unconsciously searching out each other’s hand while sleeping
not realizing they’re holding hands till someone points it out
swinging hands back and forth, skipping like children
holding hands in a museum to pull them to the next exhibition
letting go when there is an obstacle in their way and immediately grabbing each other’s hand again when they pass it
loosely holding onto each other’s hand
dragging the other with them, holding their hand
raising the other’s hand to their lips to kiss it softly
holding hands while jumping down from somewhere together
comparing hand sizes, then linking fingers together

Harmful Vietnamese Stereotypes
strawbebebby asked:
What are some harmful stereotypes to avoid when writing Vietnamese characters?
Two specifics are Vietnamese names as a whole (see our Hai Chen post with additions from Vietnamese readers) + “Asia is just China/Japan/Korea”. Nothing specifically about Vietnamese people comes to mind, but input from our Vietnamese community would be great.
Also not necessarily a stereotype about Vietnamese culture, but the mish-mash of Southeast Asia into one monolith in a lot of Western media definitely pertains to Vietnamese representation that I’ve seen! That’s one thing that’s been bugging me with cough a certain animated film released this year cough.

Vietnamese followers, feel free to chime in.

Hi! Do you have any prompts for fake dating royalty au in historic settings. And reasons why they might fake date?
Hi :)
So much fake dating... (there are actually more fake dating prompts coming this month!)
So here are a couple prompts for you for historic royalty and the reasons are included in the prompts. I really hope you enjoy them :)
Fake Dating Royalty Prompts
When their group gets attacked in a forest, the knights fight of the attackers long enough for their royal charge to flee. Fortunately, they get to a small village and one villager immediately sees the danger they are in and dresses them in old clothing and introduces them as their spouse, when the attackers search the village shortly after.
Both heirs of the feuding countries do not want the war to go on and declare themselves madly in love with each other to stop their fathers’ pointless fighting.
The princess has a secret double she uses, when she doesn’t feel like doing her royal duties or wants to escape the palace for a while. When her parents want to reign in their wild child with an arranged marriage, she uses her double on her wedding day and flees with her lover to live her own live. The double is loyal enough to go through with the wedding, but gets discovered later. She thinks, it’s going to be annulled, but the king doesn’t want the embarrassment and wants to keep it a secret, so she has to officially take the role as the princess now. Which means she stays married with her prince and has a lot of pretending to do.
Every arranged marriage was basically fake dating, especially if they sold their relationship well to the public.
After the death of her parents, she suddenly has to be the ruler of the kingdom. She realizes quickly that a queen without a king or royal consort does not get the respect she deserves. She asks her childhood friend to assume that position for her.
“You want me to act like your paramour to annoy your parents? And what do I get out of it?” “How about the best food in the kingdom and the most luxurious lodging you can even imagine?” “Sold.”
Have fun!

anyway blackout poetry not just as an art form, but as an act of violence against other works of art
taking a piece of text that someone probably put their heart and soul into creating and using it as your raw material, cutting out everything that you deem irrelevant to the point you want to make
i mean imagine cutting up a painting and using it to make a collage, or taking a marble sculpture and carving pieces out of it to make a different sculpture
just to be clear: i love blackout poetry, im not criticizing it here. i am just waxing poetic about it. i dont really know where im going with this i just have Thoughts about art being destructive

How do I write a Mafia story? Because I’m genuinely lost when it comes to research. I can’t find the information I’m looking for about the way it works and the positions! All I’m getting are famous mafias and guys with jersey accents. If it’s to much work for you, please don’t bother. I was just curious.
Hi :)
I do not have the time to really research it more than on a basis level, but when I was younger I had a phase where I loved to read non-fiction books about the mafia and so I’ll try to get you some information I remember.
How to write the Mafia
What is the mafia?
Plot twist: there is no the mafia anymore
it used to be exclusively about a criminal secret society in Sicily
other mafias are usually called by their region or country of origin (Japanese Mafia, Russian Mafia, etc.)
but they call themselves by their own terms (Cosa Nostra, Yakuza, etc.)
mafia describes a highly organized criminal network, often with international connections to other criminal networks and their own chapters in a lot of different countries
to go from a simple gang to a mafia, they have to be very powerful in their region and resourceful
they managed to infiltrate the political system in their region and became an economic player that shouldn’t be underestimated
the characteristics of most mafias are: a boss that stands over everyone, an initiation ritual before someone becomes part of the mafia, probably for life, a code of honor that says that members have to be silence when they get captured, and protection racket as their main form of criminal business
often the protection they pressure business owners into paying them for, is from themselves and they guarantee that they won’t attack the business or the owner’s family
this often happens in places where the police do not have the upper hand or cannot be trusted either
other types of criminal activities they are involved in: human trafficking, prostitution, gambling, loan sharking, drug-trafficking, fraud
How to write it?
decide on a specific mafia and become familiar with their hierarchies, their special rituals, their main business, their code of honor, what happens if they break it, etc.
if you want to have more creative freedom with your writing, establish your own mafia or create a new chapter to an existing one
but keep in mind that they need the characteristics from above
Characters
decide on who is the boss and how involved he still is (it’s mostly a boy’s club)
pick your main characters and decide on their position in the organization
what is their role, in what part are they involved?
who are the other members they mostly interact with?
do they have a lot of people they have to answer to?
how did they get into the group?
what are their motives?
how do they feel about the crimes they commit?
do their beliefs and morals still align with those of the group?
do they try to have a life outside of the group?
to give your life to a criminal network that functions as a family does not make life easy and you should show the highs and lows of being a professional criminal
think about the side characters
family plays an important part in the mafia, so make sure to include these people and show the dynamics between them
it’s important to give your characters their own personalities and individuality, so they become three-dimensional characters and not gangster clichés
Research
when it comes to writing a real, existing organization research is really important
do your research on the specific mafia you decide on, their rituals, businesses, modus operandi, etc.
all the groups have some things in common with each other, some form of organization, but they differ a lot in the way they operate and what they focus on
a story about criminals practically needs law enforcement
research the laws of the country your story takes place in, a lot of countries have their own laws for organized crimes, often just the affiliation with a criminal organization is a crime
for how it works exactly and the different positions inside the organization, I would take a look at Google Scholar, there are a lot of free books and articles that talk about those things in depth (you can just put in the specific mafia you’re searching for and some catchwords and you can even decide the period of time it was published to not use outdated info)
It’s not that in-depth, but I hope it still helps a little :)

Writing a Blind or Visually Impaired Character
A Multi-Step Guide Written by a Visually Impaired Writer and Blogger
I’m hoping this blog will over time develop its own following, and when it does people will inevitably see my bio and notice what I included: I’m visually impaired.
Yes, a visually impaired writer, and I’ve written with two blind characters before so I have some practice in the field.
So, inevitably, someone is going to ask how to write a blind character.
Or, at least, I hope you’ll ask someone who’s actually blind or visually impaired about writing a blind character before you get too involved with your new WIP.
All parts will be tagged #blindcharacter in my blog, and I will add links to every post as I finish each part. Follow my blog for more writing advice.
Note, this post updates fairly often and old versions are still floating around out there. The most current version of this post is pinned to my blog with any new guides or links you might of missed.
As of 24 January 2021, this is the most extensive and screen reader friendly version of this post.
Part One: Crafting the Blind Character
In which I tell you how to begin making a blind character who is more than a cardboard cutout
Part Two: Narrative Choice, Visual Description, Verbal Description, Social Interaction
In which I give you a basic rundown on how to write from the perspective of a character who can’t see and still make the narration descriptive
Part Three: Tropes and Clichés to Avoid
Your blind readers will thank you for not being the 5000th person to do this and manage to actually finish your story. (Do you have any idea how many stories I’ve noped out of within two chapters because of these clichés? A Lot.)
-New- Part Four: Canes, Guide Dogs, and O&M
Everything I can tell you about 1) how to learn how to use a cane 2) how a cane works 3) how to describe what your character experiences with their cane 4) everything I know on guide dogs
Part Five: Small Aspects of being Blind You Never Thought Of
5 January 2021 Edit: This link has been fixed to correspond with the correct post
Or, really, very normal everyday things for blind people, the inclusion of which will make your characters more real and authentic. It’s the tiny details.
Part Six: Should You Cure Your Character’s Blindness? (Short Answer: No)
There’s no way to write a cure for your blind character that doesn’t make blind readers hate you. Sorry. We came here to finally experience a relatable character who experiences the world like us, but none of us are getting cured so seeing this character we learned to love become something alien from us in the end feels like a slap in the face
Why I’m Blind and What I See -NEW-
I thought I’d finally make a post explaining the complicated situation about my vision. Includes an explanation of visual snow and exotropia, two of the three causes for my vision issues.
Writing Blind Characters Falling in Love, an Advice Post:
Someone asked what being blind and falling in love have to do with each other. Honestly, blindness changes your perspective on everything and it makes an impact on every relationship you have. This includes some things that you definitely do not want your character’s love interest to be/do.
Writing Blind Jokes (Should You Do It?)
You know those flow charts of “should you do x?” going around? It’s like that, but screen reader friendly. Should you write blind jokes. It’s pretty complicated and there are a lot of possible scenarios and details to consider.
Advice for Writing Toph Beifong -NEW-
In this I discuss what I would like to see done in fanfiction with Toph’s character after ten years of reading Avatar the Last Airbender fanfiction
A small essay addressing the frequently asked question on giving your blind character a superpower to help them “see.”
It’s became a popular question, so to make the answer easier/faster for everyone to access, I wrote what will usually be my initial answer. Below there are a few links to some notable past questions on this subject.
Mourning My Vision, it’s More than Depression.
A small personal essay addressing the nuances of the mourning period you experience with a new disability. The mourning period is mentioned in other guides, but this is more detailed.
Dealing with Heightened Senses, a video by Molly Burke with additional commentary by me
While Molly talks about the myths and truths about heightened senses, I talk about the correlation with blindness and neuro-divergency and how co-morbid disorders/disabilities might affect sensory processing.
Satirical Commentary on the phrase “that blank look in their eyes” used too often in fiction to identify a blind character
a:tla, I’m looking at you (and my eyes aren’t blank)
I Found a Lost Piece of Blindness History
My grandmother told me about her blind aunt and how she sent letters. It led me to speculate about all the O&M things people develop on their own but never get a chance to pass onto other blind people. Technology and techniques are lost in history and reinvented, including the white cane ad guide dogs.
Includes a little history on the introduction of guide dogs into the 20th century

truly my favorite thing about howl's moving castle is how completely and wonderfully JOYOUS it is. the story just feels as though diana had a sudden flash of inspiration and promptly went running headlong into the idea, and didn't stop until she reached the ending. it has the feeling of spontaneous, wild, joyful energy about it that I've never found in any other book, as though every word diana scribbled on the page was a new delight to uncover.
nothing about hmc feels planned or as though diana had been pondering over the concept for years and years - though it is incredibly well-written, like all her stories. hmc is absolutely brilliant and has so much LIFE, i feel like a story like that could only have been written from a chance, stray idea that suddenly took a life of its own, and it was all diana could do to run along with it, laughing all the way. that energy is what i love BEST about hmc and always will.

“can we discuss the possibility that she was going to say “in love with you””
The first time I read that interaction, I thought it was weird that Howl interrupted her to say “under a spell” because I thought it was obvious, so why did he feel the need to finish her thought for her?
But then, the first time I saw someone mention the possibility that she could’ve said “in love with you” it hit me that maybe Howl thought the same, and purposely redirected it to “under a spell” because he didn’t want to deal with feelings either, in the middle of all this mess.
I have a disease and it’s called every time I read chapter 19 of Howl’s Moving Castle I go absolutely insane

To be fair though originally in greek rape more so translates to abduction, which was a marriage custom at the time. Abduction of the bride, with the father's permission. Kind of a game.
Yeah, in German it’s called Raub der Persephone, which means abduction, so that makes sense.
We also still have the tradition of abducting the bride on her wedding day. But it’s mostly the groom’s men who do that and then the groom has to get her back, I guess. Which is definitely a game.
