How to help your artists - The circle of influence.

So over the past 10-15 years, as I’ve been trying to branch out, grow a following and sell commissions, there’s one phrase I’ve heard more than any other.

“I’d love to support you, but I have no money.”

And you know, I get that. I understand. I don’t have any either. But here’s the secret. The most powerful and useful thing you can do to support an artist? It doesn’t cost a penny. Reblog their posts, signal boost their commissions, advertise their patreon./ If you have commissioned them, or do support their patreon? Write a review, tell your friends, share their links. Keep circulating the tapes.

Every post is an artist laying themselves bare before you. You have the power to make them into somebody. You can make them into a big name, you can help bring them an income. All you have to do is share.

Here’s a handy infographic.

If artists get only likes, they never get any exposure. They find no followers, they make no money, and feel worthless.

But with reblogs, who knows how far they could reach? New people could see their work and follow them, and maybe one person will spot that commissions post or patreon promo, and maybe offer to help support them. And it didn’t even cost those followers a penny to reblog the post.

So please, anyone out there. If you enjoy an artist’s work and can’t afford to give any monetary support, you can give them something more powerful. A voice.

Likes can only go so far for artists. Artists may exclusively upload their artwork to tumblr, or don’t have the time to use other sites and prefer tumblr over deviantART due to its simplicity, but the tagging system can make it harder to navigate. Many artists on tumblr tag with high-traffic tags or use their own tags to prevent tag clogging which eventually become lost. That’s why it’s very important to reblog an artist’s work. 

I’m not trying to push you to ruin your blog’s aesthetic or something, nor am I saying that “you must absolutely reblog your favourite artist’s work or you’re trash”, all I’m saying is if you truly want to support your favourite artist, instead of just liking their posts, try to reblog them once in a while. The more reblogs they receive, the more exposure/notes/followers they may receive, and it’s just one of the easiest ways to show you care about them.

Goth girl Eponine who always goes against the grain of her high school normalcy. She dyes her hair wild colors and wears heavy makeup. It’s both a statement and a form of her self expression. She takes zero bullshit from anyone, even calling teachers and staff out on their prejudice.

Cheerleader Cosette who is well known around the school because she’s not on the squad but is also super nice and gorgeous. She always tries to be fair and treats everyone with respect. Even so, she stands her ground when she needs to and defends what she believes in.

Eponine who has a giant crush on the cheerleader in her class because not only is she really pretty, but she has good morals.

Cosette who has a falls for the goth girl’s confidence to be herself and fight for what’s important to her, and wow okay she’s hot too.
