Hetalia in Canon has a lot of issues and it is very harmful, you cannot really go like

"oh but if you dislike it you can just leave" because then it would leave in this Fandom only privileged white people who can afford to ignore those problems, because those ideas do not harm or are not used against them irl.

You cannot shut down every discussion or criticism because you like it, you need to listen, so you can understand those problem and avoid even if accidentally putting those ideas and harming others

Criticism is a way and a hope that things can improve, both within Canon and Fandom spaces.

Yeah, the Pokeani fandom is...something else.  A huge purpose of that blog is to defend Iris, though I defend a lot of characters on there (shout out to that troll that was running around earlier this year block evading and sending hate to people who didn’t ship a certain ship and hated Misty).  But yeah, some of the things they brought into my inbox was disgusting.  They’d use autistic as an insult.  There’d be blatant misogyny.  There’d also be blatant racism, too, though usually they’d try to pretend they weren’t being racist with how they treated Iris.  They got mad over Iris because she *checks notes* called Ash a kid.  Even though this was ultimately just affectionate teasing.  And also they were mad that she caught a Dragonite without a battle, but were fine when Ash did the same thing in Journeys.  The Pokeani fandom is a mess.

I tend to have a strong sense of justice (a thing with being autistic), so I usually can’t help but try to say something.  Though I have been called out by a south Italian, so I think I probably overstepped.

Honestly, I haven’t gotten this much vitriol from a fandom since I had anon turned on on my Pokeani blog.  There, people were mad at me for defending Pokeani Iris.  It’s still turned off on that blog, btw, because I know what’ll happen if it turn it back on.

But yeah, later today I’ll probably be taking a break.  Maybe I’ll play some Pokémon or Skyrim or something.

Romano being ND is a headcanon of yours that not everyone will share, and him having Arabic blood is not common knowledge in the fandom, thus disliking him can't come from racism/xenophobia alone, or colourism for that matter. No, Southerns aren't "darker" or different than Northerns, please stop talking about us as if we're a separate country with separate people, you probably didn't mean it but it does more harm than good

Also, as a (South) Italian, I promise you social media mocking Italians and using terms like "alphabet mafia" is the least of our problems, that's not what anti-Italian sentiment is...

God, yeah, r*pist France, p*do/r*pist Russia, and p*do Spain were all such bad takes.  And then there was how the fandom treated the Heta Girls.  I’ve been lurking since 2013, but I refused to engage with the fandom until it took a collective chill pill because it was...Like That.  You can probably find some relics on DeviantArt if you look lmao.  A site which I pretty much don’t use anymore.

To add on to the reason why him being canonically mixed is actually like A Big Thing:

I cant remember if It was stated in the anime but in his character bio he is ALWAYS stated to be part Arabic. So a good part of him is Mideastern, not to mention hes closest to (northern) Africa and probably shares some ancestry from there too (at least from a historical standpoint). He also has a darker complexion which unfortunately gets whitewashed a lot especially by Studio Dean (same people that made Seychelles white).

Because of these things I think he gets shoved a lot into that "violent moc" stereotype even in canon but almost 99% of the time by the fandom.

As an American I cant speak a lot about this from a personal note but I know that from a historical standpoint and what actually southern Italians have said is that people from S. Italy tend to get discriminate against by northern Italians. Also Im pretty sure Italians werent considered "white" until like the 1950s (at least here in America).

Theres also that weird racist thing where people in this fandom are OBSESSED with the M*fia. Like dont even get me started on how racist that actually is. Than again this is the same fandom that likes to romanticize WW2 and nazisim occassionally so..

Also people on tumblr just hate/mock italians in general for some reason and that just confuses me so much like ???

This man is also like...super fucking poor too, so add some classism to it as well while we're (I'm) at it lol. He's also an immigrant in multiple ways and multiple times throughout history so theres some xenophobia to boot

Colorism is probably the more accurate term, and non-white Italians obviously experience racism. But again, not good either way.

Hiya, been following you for a lil while, love your blog by the way, but. Wth happened here? Hang in there!!

Someone needs to shut it about Romano not being interesting. I mean, he has a nasty temper, but the boy was canonically isolated and maybe groomed for centuries under a tyrant. I'd have a shit temper too.

Long story short:

Someone over on r/hetalia made a post about why they think Romano is overrated, but their reasoning was flawed and hypocritical. I talked about it here, and ended up talking about the reasons Romano is frequently singled out by the fandom. Hint: it's due to fandom racism (since Romano is canonically mixed) and ableism (Romano is pretty nd coded, namely coded as mentally ill).

This has annoyed an England Stan, as I pointed out that England doesn't get this kind of shit from the fandom (I didn't even say anything negative about England, I just pointed this out), and one person who thinks both me and the previous person are overreacting (to literal ableism and racism), and someone who just really hates Romano (possibly a Veneziano Stan, though I can't prove that).

And yeah, Romano has reasons to have a temper, but try telling them that lmao.

With this mess, I suddenly see why people people stop engaging in fandom spaces.  Because as soon as I blocked that rando, another one showed up and was like “actually sweeetie it has nothing to do with racism :) It’s because Romano has a shitty attitude.  And also he gives up and cries a lot and is awful to everyone.” It was a whole ableist mess.  These anons are like a hydra, I swear.

Oh don't worry op I don't think dislike for romano has much to do with racism I mean as an Asian I'm really not sure how he's ethnically different from other europeans or n.i. and i dont think most non europeans will be aware either considering thats the main demography oh hetalia. Yeah, I think I remember a similar anon (probably the same person about a year back in other people’s inboxes.  Does this mean I’m Hetalia tumblr famous lmao?

But yeah...I don’t get this upset when I see takes I don’t like about my fave.  At worst, I’ll vaguepost, and only when it stretches into ableism.  I certainly don’t send anyone anon hate.
