Hi everyone! It's been a while since I posted anything, so I just wanted to share some exciting news about my life. I started a job working with my friend, @jaybump_ , at her new beauty business, @bloomwildlashco . BLOOM WILD specializes in Lash Training Services and and high-quality lash products. Jordan's product line was custom designed by her, and features products that are cruelty-free and formaldahyde-free, beautifully designed, and easy to use - which I totally 💖! In her all-inclusive Eyelash Extension Certification Course she shares with her students some of her best lashing tips and techniques that she has acquired from her years of experience working as a licensed esthetician and lash artist. Students who take her course also receive a beautiful travel kit including our premium lash products and all the essentials needed to begin lashing, a practice head, course training manual (written by Jordan and a design-saavy friend 😉), and a certificate of completion. This is illustration that I created for a book project that I am working on. There has been some controversy already over the image and I am questioning whether it should even be printed, so I am asking for feedback from people.

The first concern is that some of the imagery is inspired by a Native American myth (I am posting a link to the text below) and whether this is cultural appropriation. For the record I am not of Native American descent (I am mixed race). I do deeply respect Native American people and their cultures, values, and wisdom. I was inspired by this particular imagery because the Crow is not represented as a harbinger of death (as it is seen in many world cultures), but as a transformative figure that brings light in a time of darkness which I feel is a universal message of hope that the world could use right now.

A concern was also raised about the implied nudity and whether this was too provocative. As a woman and artist my view of the female form is that it is sacred and beautiful, not vulgar, and that is what I attempted to capture. The figure of the woman represents not only the daughter of the story, but the universal mother/goddess archetype (and her modern incarnations). Her body is connected to the earth (the curves of her thighs mimics the rolling hills), and from her body springs water (symbolic of her creative and life-giving power). As she lifts her dusky garment to reveal her womanhood, so the Crow reveals her beauty by lifting the darkness around her.
