My chosen example word is "dizi" -- a type of Chinese flute. In English, the obvious pronunciation is "dee-zee." In Chinese, it's something like "dee-z'h," the second "i" muted in a sound English speakers don't typically make. Which is better: to be accurate, despite the English words on either side? Or be inaccurate, but potentially smoother to the ear?

Granny Sheryl raises an eyebrow. “Is someone giving you trouble?” Lina, morose, lays her head down on the kitchen table. “No….” “Mm-hm.” Granny Sheryl resumes stirring. Her thoughtful brown eyes sweep Lina head to toe. “Well, so long as you know to come to me before the sheriff.” ~~~ Lina discovers a man in an alley, and she's pretty sure she's killed him (on accident!) with a bottle of orange soda. Thus are families found.

Chapter 5 of the podfic is finished!

So I figure it's time to explain some of the running mechanics of this podfic. You've probably noticed the slight reverb for Thoughts -- that's applied to anything that was [in brackets] in the original fic, or italics in the case of Vash reading someone's mind. There's a lot of internal monologue in this fic, so it felt important to be able to differentiate consistently between that and things said out loud.

If you listen to the stereo version, Knives' thoughts come from the left ear, and Vash's come from the right; that's because these are left-aligned and right-aligned, respectively, in the original text. Regular narration is centered, and thus comes in through both ears.

Last but not least, for this chapter specifically: the occasional buzzing substitute for dialogue is a cue that it was presented as blank quotes, like this "         ," or blank thoughts, like this [             ]

"The sand beneath my fingers is hot. Abrasive. The rolling vibration of the grain moving over the backs of my hands reminds me of a type of smoothness- a micro shhh shhh that is the only thing I can really focus on. I think it's all over- whatever just happened. [I know what happened.] My fingers test the edges of where the water from the happening has settled into a damp clump in my shadow. It is evaporating nicely in irregular waves of heat. What if Vash did some reverse photosynthesizing and things just kept getting worse from there?
