revision strategies
sometimes when iâm trying to revise, i find myself turning to my phone or netflix for ââbreaksââ and it really isnât helping with school work etc.
iâve recently found a few ways to make revision and studying interesting, and actually productive so here i go :)
before you start...
hand your phone over to a friend, a parent or someone nearby to look after while you revise meaning you canât get distracted
donât use earphones to listen to music. although you may be thinking that itâs toning out other loud sounds and helping you focus, studies show that studying with headphones can decrease memory. familiar, low volume backround music may be a study aid if youâre in a comfortable, well known enviroment.
speaking of a comfortable environment, make sure the place youâre studying makes you feel happy, comfy and safe. this could include your bedroom, lounge, local coffee shop and even the garden, if itâs not too hot nor cold.Â
handwrite your notes:Â a recent study in the Journal of psychological science discussed in an article on medical daily highlighted that âusing a pen and paper to take notes boosts memory and the ability to retain and understand conceptsâ. it is also useful to use different colours and highlighters to group common themes together. this allows the brain to connect the colours and key points together.
food and water. donât have too much water on hand so that youâll need the toilets every 5 minutes or so, but have enough to keep you hydrated and your brain focused. for example, for 2 hours study session, have a 500ml glass of water handy. food wise, make sure to have a good, healthy meal beforehand which then improves alertness and memory.
TIMETABLES
a weekly revision planner may help you way more than you could think. it keeps your mind focused to whatâs happening. on the plan, write which topics to revise on which day, so you donât feel like youâre doing too much or too little.Â
without using this step, you may find it extremely difficult to sit down and actually find the time to revise, even if you have nothing planned. if this idea isnât your cup of tea, set the same time for everyday to revise, obviously leave a day or two out for you to have some time to yourself.
NOTE-TAKING
this is the biggest part of revision.Â
notetaking comes in different types, forms, and you can do it in different ways. sometimes note-taking can be a little dull or boring so to improve the mood and motivation, you could always try different types of note-taking. for example:
mind mapping: personally this is one of my favourite ways to revise. write the topic in a fancy, cursive bubble in the middle of an A3 page, then proceed to write notes and information on the topic around it, in colourful writing. this really improves quality of revision too :)
the cornell method: the cornell method is based on two columns: one is called âkeywordsâ, where obviously you write words that are related to the subject youâre studying. the other column is named ânotesâ where you write main points and ideas. at the bottom, create a section called âsummaryâ. this is where you collect all the main ideas and notes, and list them by bullet point, so when you re-read notes, they are quite obvious, but in brief instead of huge amounts of detail.
i really goddamn hope this helped at least one person, because i swear by these tips and i thought sharing them would be helpful. this post was quite last minute because iâve been away for two days, but iâm back :)

 BULLET JOURNAL
so i love bullet journals, and i know a lot of people want to start one but may not now how to make or maintain one so here are a few heads up and some information for you beginners.
what youâll need
a journal
this ones pretty obvious but itâs always useful to know which type of journal you will need. a dotted journal is always the best, but a graph paper journal is an alternative, if all else fails. dotted journals always look really neat, without interfearing with any writing, documenting, or doodling you do in bullet journals.
washi tape
one need for me, while documenting in a bullet journal, is washi tape. one reason for this is because it literally comes in handy for anything, for example: decoration, covering mistakes up, emphasising points or even as reminders. itâs also useful that you can get so many different types and patterns.Â
stickers
this is only really a need if your journal is plain, or you feel that it doesnât represent you. using stickers to decorate and personanalise your journal, can influence you to write in it. they also look aesthetically pleasing so there you go.
basics
how can it help me? the structure means that it can become a visual reminder of daily/monthly tasks, immediate go-to for scheduling tasks and a place for you to let creativity roam free.
how do i know what each symbol means? at the beginning of the journal, you should start by creating a personal âkeyâ where you can draw symbols and write the definition near it, so that when youâre going through the journal, you donât forget what each symbol means
example:
index
the index is a really important part of any journal, bullet journal or not. each entry to it, is given a topic. the topic is then added to the index with the page number. this helps keep your notepad organised and keeps you focused.
logs and entries
monthly log: a monthly log is created to help you organise your month (obviously). it consists of a monthly calendar, where you can write down any tasks/events or take a note to give you an overall view of the month and what you need to work on.
a monthly log also has a task page, where you can list tasks that youâd like to get done during the month, what your milestones may be, and how to overcome them.
other collections: every and any blank page that is given a topic can be labeled as a collection. they can take any form, and may be more than lists. some examples of general collections may be school notes, shopping lists, mind map, journaling, and future goals.
