i had a maths lecture today and we mainly just talked about goals and things we want to do during the semester which was nice. also t-minus two days until my first chem exam!

boil water notices were just sent out in my area (austin) at the same time that my professor sent an announcement about assignments due tomorrow even though myself and many others have barely had an hour of electricity today.

and the only grocery store open nearby was a tiny gas station with cars overflowing the parking lot. inside? all that was left was a couple of chip bags with families and children trying to get enough food for days.

here’s a recap of some of the glorious horror stories i’ve heard from friends or experienced myself

everyone i know has frozen pipes. regardless of who, what, where, everyone has frozen pipes. my friend kayla and her parents were heating towels and using hair dryers to unfreeze their kitchen sink 

everyone i know living in dallas proper lost their power at around 9 am monday morning and didn’t get it back for the entire day. my friends barricaded themselves in their bedrooms with towels and old clothes and laid in bed under blankets while the temperature dropped to 40 degrees fahrenheit 

my friend kyle owns three aquariums. his apartment lost power at 2 am on sunday night and he ended up feverishly covering all his tanks in towels and blankets to protect them from the cold in the middle of the night. they very well could have frozen if he hadn’t 

power for the past couple of days has been intermittent because they’re doing rolling blackouts. my dad was in the middle of a zoom conference call presenting when our power was suddenly cut. no one has been able to do any work at all. my old piano teacher’s power was cut and didn’t return monday morning. her living room dropped to 38 degrees fahrenheit. she had to move in with her friend who lives near a police station, because they knew they wouldn’t cut the power there. hotels are all completely booked. 

none of my friends in austin have water. they are getting the snow and icicles from outside and melting them for water. they’ve also essentially given up on social distancing, because all of them have only one friend with a functioning bathroom, and in the past hour, they also no longer had running water. i don’t have close friends in houston, but i’ve also heard they have no water. they’re worried about contamination

we’re also being told to limit our water consumption. they’re saying not to run the dishwasher, bathe or shower, or let the sinks drip (as you do to make sure the pipes don’t freeze) because then they would actually run out of supply. my uncle in austin tried to go to the grocery store. there’s a line a mile long stretching around the corner 

boil water notices were sent out for my university. you can’t use the water there for consumption anymore, you have to trek across campus in the freezing cold to get bottled water from the one cafeteria that’s open right now. we’re expecting to get boil water notices in my area as well any hour now.

and now the worst fucking thing: our professors are still expecting us to function as if nothing is going on. my friend carol got an email from her management professor saying “hope you’re safe, but keep up with your readings!” my friend lisa is studying for pchem by flashlight, barricaded in her room. i even know someone studying for the gre by candlelight, waiting for icicles to melt so that she can have clean water to drink. 

being a college student in the midst of a deadly pandemic was bad enough, but being a college student in the midst of a deadly pandemic as a winter storm your state did nothing to prepare for hits you for a week straight is fucking trying all of us. and most of us haven’t seen the worst of it. we’re lucky to even have a place to live.

y’all things are actually serious here in Texas, tons of people are without power and temperatures are at record lows. it’s supposed to snow again tonight and a lot of people are stuck where they are with limited, if any, resources and food.

despite my struggles with mental health, i really love to learn. i love science, i love veterinary medicine, and i want to pursue these things no matter what struggles my dysfunctional brain presents me with. i can do this.

Last week was really tiring but why do I have the feeling that this week is going to be even more so? In any case, I’m behind on some biophysics lectures and I’ve no idea how I’m going to catch them again... Are there any med students who is not behind in not even one class? this pandemic will end and you’ll claim the window seat in your favorite cafe, stand in a crowd at a concert, visit a museum and make crappy art in the park. sometimes things feel like they’ll go on forever, sometimes bad things feel heavier than good things, sometimes life feels like it’s slowing down and all you’re doing is waiting for the full stop— but just because this hopelessness is all that you’re feeling right now, doesn’t mean that it’s all there is. there’s always more and you will experience that, and you will feel alive again.
