It’s really easy to forget this piece of dialogue because of how early it pops up—we don’t know enough of the story by that point, so we can only surmise that, much like everyone else, Kalpas was a victim to the Honkai; even then, because of his attitude and first impressions, the weight of it and the exact wording doesn’t hit until later, because at first, Kalpas was just seemingly a madman with no care for anyone else and no heart at all, just hellbent on destruction.

And then we eventually learn that there was someone. It was not just a doomed hometown that succumbed to the Honkai; it was someone who succumbed to a Herrscher.

“My successor is a Herrscher who took everything from me.”

Knowing what we do now,,,,, makes this hurt so much more.
