Every mountain I climb, no matter how distant it is from my hometown or how high it is from the ground, lets me feel the same thing - security. I feel safe when I’m on top. I feel home. The mountains is my home.

Project Baler 2015// Day 2
Good morning, Baler!
I felt the sea breeze across our room... while dreaming! Lol. My friends woke me up; already prepared to watch the sunrise at Sabang Beach. Hurriedly, I got up, fixed myself a bit and off we went to wait for Mr. Sun to rise!

After watching the sunrise, Gloise suggested that we order our breakfast from the Inn and have it served after we finish SURFING! Yes, surfing! I set it as an optional activity since it would really consume time, but hey, who would want to miss that famous water sport in town? Thank God, my friends persuaded me to try that one!
Our surfing instructor was Kuya Marlon. He’s an in-house instructor from Pacific Waves Inn. When you’re one of the guests, you get the lesson for only PHP 300/hour. I’m not sure how much would it cost if you’re a walk-in.
We didn’t have any photos during our surfing lesson... or was it just me? Lol. We didn’t have waterproof cameras, so that explains the lack of evidence. But anyway, the experience was great. It was easier than I thought. There was no drowning or any kind of that scene that happened. Good God! :) Kuya Marlon even challenged me to get through bigger waves! I believed he was amazed when I got to ride the waves on the second try. I don’t mean to brag, though. I’m sorry.

This was after! Sun’s up already and we’re all wet! Photo from Arianne Marabella
Right after this great morning exercise, we immediately went back to the inn to have our breakfast only to find out that all our ordered meals were unavailable. How troublesome! Instead of ranting about what happened, we just looked for something to eat just to get through the morning.
That time, three vendors went in and offered us rice puddings/suman. We had no choice, though and besides, it’s our chance to taste a local delicacy. They offered us free samples for us to taste. We bought a few from the two vendors. The third one, who was a man, got quite mad because we didn’t buy from him. In the first place, I thought they were a group so I didn’t mind buying from one of them. He even told me that I should’ve bought from him since he was the one who gave me free samples. I was speechless and just let him leave. I was quite shocked and a bit scared because he might be a medicine man. He could curse me! Okay. Imagination strikes!
After our “breakfast” (suman and hot coffee/choco), we contacted Mang Efren to take us to our next destinations! It was 0730 when we went on to our second-day adventure, this time, outside Baler!
Day 2: WHAT’S OUTSIDE BALER?!
Our first destination was The Millennium Tree Park located in Maria Aurora, outside Baler. It is said to be the biggest Balete Tree in Asia that stood for 600 years. It took us 30 - 45 minutes from Baler to Maria Aurora via Mang Efren’s tricycle.
Tumblr media
The beauty of Aurora... Taken while we’re on our way to The Millennium Tree Park.
Tumblr media
The Millennium/Balete Tree - 600 years old and still counting!
Tumblr media
It’s huge that you can get inside of it.
Heads up! Since this is an established park, there’s an entrance fee of PHP 20 that should be paid upon registration. There are desks and chairs around the tree where you can relax, have a picnic with your family or simply stare at the tree.
After seeing the famous tree, had photo ops with it, we headed immediately to our next and last destination - Mother/Ditumabo Falls.
It took us almost an hour to reach San Luis, Aurora where Mother Falls is located, specifically in Brgy. Ditumabo, hence, the name.
While on our way, we saw a lot of travel & tours vans heading there as well. Summer time, it really was. Mother Falls is really one of the tourist destinations in Aurora to look forward to.
It already gave us an idea that a lot of people was going that way, so Mang Efren thought of an alternate route for us to escape the traffic and crowd. Yes, there was a traffic caused by a lot of cars specially in parking lots and entrance area.
Mang Efren asked us if it was okay for us to take a “not-so-shortcut” route going to the falls. We all agreed since that’s the only way we could miss the traffic.
After we stopped in a parking lot where there was less vehicles, we trekked almost half an hour going to the jump-off.
Tumblr media
You will have to cross this bridge when you plan to take the route Mang Efren taught us.
Tumblr media
We came across a pineapple farm and there was a family who sold fresh pineapples to passers by. I believe they deliver these pineapples to the market. We were lucky to have Mang Efren because he talked to the kids who sold these fresh pineapples and was able to get some for free. Some were bought by him and gave it to us. How generous! Yes, we ate these cute pineapples which were unbelievably sweet!
A few more minutes and we finally reached the jump-off going to the Mother Falls. It was filled with tour vans! Lots of them! And it was muddy as well.
Tumblr media
You know you’re already at the jump-off when you see this. Photo by Arianne Marabella
Tumblr media
Registration Area - Before trekking up the falls, you have to register here and pay reasonable fees.
Tumblr media
We saw this buddy along the way, soaking his feet after a day’s work. And hey, look at the clear water!
WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE TRAIL:
Tumblr media
Some rocks on the road. Quite a rocky trail at first.
Tumblr media
Had to take a photo of this because it was my first time to eat a Penoy Kwek-kwek. It was delicious and it tasted just the same as the ordinary kwek-kwek. You will see this and more along the start of the trail. I’m sure you won’t miss this because you have to pass through this mini-Mercatto.
Tumblr media
The “foresty” vibe it gives! What a refreshing view! No filter needed for this beauty.
Tumblr media
Since Ditumabo Falls is already an established tourist destination, you should expect this kind of trail - a cemented one.
Tumblr media
When you see this dam, you’re already near the Mother falls. NO FALSE HOPE!
Tumblr media
Mother/Ditumabo Falls - I stared at it for like five minutes ‘cause I was in awe. Sorry for the photobombers.
It took us 45 minutes to 1 hour ‘til we reached the falls and same went as we come back to the jump-off. Adding up another 30 minutes, we reached the place where Mang Efren left his tricycle. We hurriedly went back to the in because we’re already late for the check-out.
We paid 100 PHP for our extended stay. That was not bad, though. We rushed everything before leaving the inn - bath time, packing our belongings, fixing the room (some sorta). Then, voila! We finished everything in no time!
For the last meal treat, we asked Mang Efren to take us to Yellow Fin Bar & Grill hoping at that moment, the restobar wasn’t crowded since it was lunch time.
We were not mistaken when we got there. There were less crowd, more seats for us! This time, we requested Mang Efren to eat with us as a treat for him because he had been the best guide and had been a father to us.
Tumblr media
Yellow Fin Bar & Grill at lunch time. Look at the relaxing aura it gives.
Tumblr media
Our last lunch out at Baler. I will definitely miss this place! Photo by Joemarie Solomon
P.S. We were too hungry and excited to eat to take a photo of the food! Haha!
Tumblr media
Our farewell photo with Mang/Tatay Efren! This was taken when he took us to the van terminal at the market area since we didn’t have any choice. Buses were already dispatched before 1400. He didn’t leave as soon as we rode the van, instead, he waited until we departed and even instructed the driver of the van to take care of us. How sweet it was of him!
Tumblr media
Our group photo inside the van en route to Cabanatuan (again). We left at almost 1500 with a happy soul but exhausted body!
Bye bye Baler!
Bye bye Aurora!
You are are truly a precious treasure of the Philippines!
Fin.

Project Baler 2015// Day 1
April 25-26, 2015
We left our hometown, Laguna, at around 2200 of April 24 so we could get to the bus terminal in Cubao at around 1200 of April 25. We didn’t fail to meet our itinerary’s call time. We arrived at Genesis Bus Terminal, Cubao, Quezon City minutes before 1200. We were so hyped because we made it at an unusual time of the day.
We went straightly to the ticket booth just to know that there’s only one bus with four unoccupied seats left. We were five. Out of desperation, we begged the sales officer if one from our group could seat in the aisle of the bus just for us to get the free slots. She refused and said that it’s not allowed.
Plan B was implemented right away. Instead of taking a direct trip to Baler, we had no choice but to take a detour. We took a bus from ES Transport going to Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija. One thing that was running in our tired minds was to keep moving forward. It’s better to take detours than to get there later than we expect.
I forgot our time of arrival at Cabanatuan. As we got there, we immediately boarded a bus going to Casiguran. According to other blogs, there are vans going to Baler in that area but I believe that those were not yet available during the time we arrived.
After a long, rough and bouncy ride, we finally arrived at Baler, Aurora at around 0900 - 1000.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Side story: I started having a stomach problem a few minutes after we started our journey from Cabanatuan. I thought I was going to die back then! Thank God, the bus stopped in a gas station and I felt relieved! It was really an unforgettable moment for me. It taught me a lesson I should keep in mind while traveling - never travel with an empty stomach and ride at the back of an ordinary bus. The experience is really not amazing!)
HALLER BALER!
Tumblr media
As soon as we arrived at Baler, we looked for a tricycle that will give us a tour for two days. We are supposed to have our contact, Mang Claro, but our newly found tour guide/driver said that Mang Claro became inactive with tours since March. Maybe that’s the reason why I couldn’t contact him days before our getaway. Our newly found guide and driver was Mang Efren Mislang. After haggling for the rate of Mang Efren’s tour, we immediately headed to the bus terminal and tried to book a ride back to Cubao but unfortunately, again, the buses were fully booked! How great could it be? I’ve learned from there that you should not go where everyone goes during summer specially when you’re a hardcore commuter.
Next stop: Food Trip!
Since all of us haven’t eaten our breakfast, we searched for a place to eat. Our group was that kind of “local-loving travelers”. We’d rather eat in a carinderia around town than to eat in a fancy restaurant.
We asked Mang Efren to take us to the best carinderia for breakfast. He mentioned a known “Tapsi House” but it was closed that day. Instead, we just walked nearby and spotted a lane of carinderias.Yummm! There were lots of cuisine to choose from but most of the dishes were made out of seafood which is my favorite!
Tumblr media
After our late breakfast, we started to cross activities out from our itinerary!
Let the pictures speak for themselves. *wink*
DAY 1 // PART I: THE TOWN OF BALER
Tumblr media
An old hospital in front of the carinderia lane.
Tumblr media
President Manuel L. Quezon, Father of the Filipino Language
Tumblr media
Museo de Baler
Tumblr media
The First Presidential Car
Tumblr media
Ancient Guest House
Tumblr media
Santo Entierro (There was a wedding being held during our visit so we didn’t come in to pay respect to the ceremony.)
Tumblr media
The Hanging Bridge (This was not included in our itinerary. Mang Efren was the one who mentioned this one. What a great guide!)
Tumblr media
The prominent landmark of the town: this huge BALER sign! :) Don’t miss this one. Photo from Arianne Marabella
Tumblr media
Before we checked in to Pacific Waves Inn, we had our lunch at Gerry Shan’s Buffet! The best restaurant in town! Yummmm!
DAY 1 // PART 2: WONDERS OUTSIDE THE TOWN
The second part of our tour was more on the wonderful nature that surrounds Baler.
Tumblr media
This was the view from a view deck in Ermita Hill. I took a panoramic shot of it.
Tumblr media
Ermita Hill - the refuge of the citizens of Baler when tsunami occurs.
Tumblr media
A trail inside Ermita Hill. Mang Efren said that this leads to the other side of the hill.
Tumblr media
The commemorative sculptures of the survivors of tsunami that once occurred in Baler many years ago.
Tumblr media
On our way to Aniao Islet, Diguisit Falls and Diguisit Rock Formations, Mang Efren stopped and told us to take a photo of this beautiful view. He’s one great local tour guide! I was fascinated.
Tumblr media
Diguisit Falls - a 3-minute trek is all you need. :)
Tumblr media
Diguisit Rock Formations
Tumblr media
Aniao Islets
Tumblr media
The Watch Tower
We were supposed to proceed to Dicasalarin Cove but our guide told us that it’s far from Baler and it was getting dark, so, we just decided to trek up to this watch tower near the Aniao Islets. The view was, nevertheless, amazing. We watched the sunset from there.
Note: You have to pay around P10 for the entrance of the trail going to The Watch Tower because it’s privately owned by a local family.
Tumblr media
The scenery was really breathtaking! Perfect for panoramic shot like this. :)
Tumblr media
On our way down
Tumblr media
We were supposed to head to Yellow Fin Bar & Grill for dinner but the place was crowded during night time. I didn’t know. Lol. So, we looked for another place to eat. We ended up in a restaurant ran by a hotel along the beach. Bay-ler View Restaurant

After dinner, we went back to our room at Pacific Waves Inn and slept immediately! It’s gonna be a long second day in Baler!
Lights off, Day 1!

Project Baler 2015// Day 0
April 25-26, 2015
This idea was originally made up by my college classmates Gloise and Arianne. One fine day of February, they told me and Erwin that they’re planning to make a trip to Baler, Aurora via travel agency. They were inviting us but as a stubborn traveler, I refused the offer. I suggested another way instead.
I am not a fan of travel agencies because they have limited time and fixed itineraries. In short, I am a D-I-Y traveler, dearies!
So, I insisted to make our own itinerary! Yay! We set the date on the 25th and 26th of April.
After a long time of rigorous research, I came up with this itinerary.

Feb Ender: Mt. Maculot Traverse 2/2
By around 12 NN, we reached the summit. We stayed for a while to enjoy the pleasure of resting and eating a few snacks. After all that preparation, we started to descend.
Descending was thought to be much easier but we were tired and our knees started to get weak so, we had a rough time. Good thing, Kuya Pepe carried my backpack. Of course, I was hesitant to ask him a favor but I would get injured if I kept carrying that heavy backpack of mine. Besides, Kuya Pepe quite insisted and told me that it was way lighter than the ones he already brought (his own, not from other hikers).
A little story about Kuya Pepe.
His real name is Christopher and he is a newbie when it comes to guiding hikers. He have climbed a lot of mountains already including Mt. Pulag, I think. He told us that he could hike Mt. Maculot for 30 minutes up to the summit and descend for 15-30 minutes. I don't know what kind of bones he had but it's impressive. I believed him because he's fit and his shoes were made for hiking. He said he took basic photography classes aside from training in Philippine Red Cross. He told us what and what not to eat in the mountain, the importance of helping one another and other sorts. We forgot to ask why the mountain was named "Maculot", though.

As we descended, there were paths that required rappelling. This was taken at the first path which was less steep.
Tumblr media
I learned rappelling from my P.E. class back in college. So, I found this activity fun and thrilling! After several years, I finally got to use what I learned from school! Yay!
Tumblr media
While Sam and Elai were rappelling down, I waited at the top and asked Kuya Pepe to take a photo of me. Hehe.
Tumblr media
Then, he took a photo of me while really doing the thing. Lol.
Tumblr media
This was the path where we needed to crawl really down low.
Tumblr media
That mutual feeling of exhaustion. We decided to stop for a while at the edge of the mountain!

Smiling through the pain. *Physical pain*
Tumblr media
Looking back on what we just hiked. What a satisfying feeling!
After 8 hours, we finally got back to the jump-off, me with sore thighs, Elai with emotionless face and Sam with torn shoes. We took a tricycle going back to the jump-off. After resting, we took a bath. Yes, there were restrooms you can use to take a bath for PHP10.
We're supposed to head to the nearest "Bulalo" carinderia afterwards but we failed to find one. So, we ended up eating Lomi and Chami, still local delicacies. We headed back home by riding a bus going to Buendia. We were lucky to spot one while waiting outside the eatery. I arrived home safely and with complete and tired body parts.
Budget: PHP1000/head
Fare
Buendia to Tambo Exit: P126
Tambo Exit to Cuenca: P22
Tric from Shell Gas Station to Jump-Off: P20
Tric going to Jump-Off: P35
Jump-Off to Highway: P20
Cuenca to Banay-Banay: P15
Bus going to Buendia: P126
Registration: P20/head
Guide: P1000/group of 5; extra charge for an excess member.
Yes, we took a lot of detour but it was still cheap. I’ve traveled and hiked on a shoestring budget!
‘Til the next adventure! ;)

Feb Ender: Mt. Maculot Traverse 1/2
February 28, 2015
It started with a friend's invite.
One of my closest friends, Elai, invited me to go on a day hike with her and her friend, Sam. Thinking that it'd be my first day hike, I didn't hesitate to join. The date was already set before they invited me and Sam made the itinerary days before the hike. So, everything was set. All I had to do was follow everything.I spent the night before the hike at Elai's house, thinking that it'd be easier for me to travel with them than to meet them at the jump-off. That sleepover was almost considered as a side-trip. I didn’t foresee that Elai’s house was farther than I expected. Take note: I traveled during the evening 'til midnight. It was thrilling and fun, though.
I woke up with tired eyes and sleepyhead the next morning. Our itinerary stated that we should be on our way by 3 AM. At exactly that time, we just woke up! Basically, we're behind our schedule. From Cavite City, where Elai lives, we rode a bus going to Buendia. From there, we were supposed to ride a bus going to Lemery, Batangas but unfortunately, the first bus already took off a few minutes before we arrived. The bus staff offered us an alternative route, instructed that we could take the bus (that was going to leave anytime soon) going to Lipa via Tambo Exit, and we could ride the Jeepney going to Lemery. We didn't have any choice so we immediately hopped in.
From Tambo Exit, we took a jeepney going to Lemery and alighted at Cuenca where our jump-off was. We left Cavite City at 4 AM and arrived at the jump-off around 8 AM. We started hiking at 8 AM. Before going to the jump-off, you have to register and leave one ID from your group. Sam was the one who left her ID. Then, each would have to pay PHP 20 at the registration counter. A guide is required before ascending. Rates differ depending on the path you choose to take and the number of the members per group. In our case, we were three and we chose to traverse the mountain, and that cost us PHP 1000.
Our local guide was Kuya Pepe. There were two other hikers who went first. They thought they could do some “morning walk” up the mountain without a guide. Though they were locals and familiar with the path, the officials still required them to have a tour guide. So, that’s how they ended up joining our group. They were friendly and quick. I forgot their names, though.

The Nagsasa (Cove) Hype/3
January 15-16, 2015
After the trek and photo ops, we went back to the camp and immediately packed our things 'cause the next activity in our itinerary was to visit Anawangin Cove. But, here's the thing, instead of helping them pack up, I went straight to the restroom and washed up. All along, I thought someone from the group followed me. Little did I know that I was the only one who washed up. Just great! What a selfish bastard. Lol. So, when I came back, I was, of course, surprised with what I saw: no tents, no stoves, packed things and ready to go! I tried to apologize but I guess they didn't need it that time. Everyone was busy.
I hurried up, grabbed my belongings and packed whatever I could just for the sake of helping them.
At around 12 noon, we left Nagsasa Cove and rode off to the next destination. Bye, Nagsasa Cove. Bye, newly found friends!
(P.S. We missed the famous Nagsasa Falls. We lacked time, so we decided to just come visit it next time. It is an hour-hike alone. Going down will eat up another hour. You'll consume more or less two hours for the whole trip and you also need a guide.)
Anawangin Cove
Last 2013, I have been to this place, so I was quite familiar with it. I repeat, "quite familiar with it". There were few changes in the island. I looked for the spot where there were Nipa huts and a bunch of people when I last went there. I failed to find it. Maybe because it wasn't the peak season. (January isn't a peak season for beach camps and island hopping.)
Our group "somewhat" went for a stop over the island and grabbed some photo ops. After lunch, we walked around and looked for the lake Sir Gilbert was mentioning about. I was also told that there was this lake but I guess I wasn't able to visit that when I first went there.
Though we failed to visit the famous lake of Anawangin, I, personally, had fun walking around the island. You'll know why with these photos I'll share with you.

Things I learned
Each trip never fails to teach me something, whatever it may be. In this trip, I learned a lot of things, old and new.
It's best to travel with a partner or buddies. Not only you'd be able to cut the expenses, you'd also be able to share your insights about your real-time experience during the trip. You also have someone to watch over you and vice versa.
Meet new people. There are pros and cons regarding this matter, but for the sake of enjoying the trip, always go with the pros. If something bad happens, at least, you get to survive the tragedy.
More is better than less. When traveling, pack lightly but never TOO LIGHTLY! It's always better to have extras of some important stuff like clothes and hygienic products. And oh! Also those you can't buy in the island (if there are available stores in the island).
Backpacking (for me) is much better than any luxurious forms of travel. It's cheap, less hassle and much more fun! You own your time, you won't cut short with money (if you know how to budget) and you get to blend in with the local community of the place you're visiting.
Savor the moment. Never let the delayed flights or late time of arrival get into your nerves. Focus on your goal: to enjoy the whole trip! Never miss a single unforgettable moment.
Always remember the golden rule: take nothing but pictures, leave nothing footprints, kill nothing but time. Respect Mother Nature and follow these rules if you still want to visit beautiful places like Nagsasa Cove and Anawangin Cove.
Thank God for everything. These beautiful mountains and beaches are not here if it's not for the great creation of God. So, while taking a stroll around the island or hiking up the mountain, pause for a while, breathe in and thank God for these wonderful creations! Smile and absorb the goodness of the Lord.
That's it for my Nagsasa Cove Adventure! Watch out for the next one!
(Thank you Princess Enova, Michael Ann De Guzman, Sir Gilbert Pedroso and KC Cuenca for the photos! Much love!)

The Nagsasa (Cove) Hype/2
January 15-16, 2015
The bonfire night became extraordinary when our group "somewhat" merged with another. I have never experienced that before; a stranger approached us, then, suddenly, asked us if we could join their group. No! I didn't get scared. I got excited 'cause it was my first time to be invited by a complete stranger. I don't know if it was only because of the booze but still, the experience was simply amazing.
The night seemed so young, though it was already 10 pm. Some of my mates went back to the camp and washed up while Sir Gilbert and I stayed longer. They came back after washing up and sat again on the circle of bonfire friends. (What a term!) We spent a little more time knowing one another and talking about a lot of sensible yet random things (i.e. Pope Francis' visit to the Philippines, the stars, God's creation, politics, love life, radiology stuff). Everything-under-the-billion-stars topic. Almost everyone was open to anything. I was impressed on how the conversation turned out. There were good and bad, happy and sad, ups and downs like a roller coaster ride. It seemed that I knew these newly found friends for long though we have known each other for only a few hours.
I didn't want the night to end but like the bonfire, the heat of the night must come to cool but without the ocean washing the ashes away from the shore.
Around 1 am when I went back to the camp, washed up and crawled inside the tent. To be honest, I was forcing myself to keep my eyes wide open 'cause I didn't want to miss the beauty of the night. If you could only play a video clip from my brain's memory, I would love to share that clip wherein you could see the bright, twinkling stars across the night sky of the South China Sea. Amazing view! I promise. They were so bright that you could distinguish different constellations and count as many shooting stars as you can. I'd like to assume that I have seen Comet Lovejoy during our star-gazing/bonfire night.
Day 2
Good morning, everyone! I slept at around 2 am and woke up at around 8. I guess my adrenaline kicked off so early that it interrupted my bioclock.
Well, anyway, as soon as I woke up, I was so eager to take a morning stroll. I didn't know why, but, maybe because it was kind of a tradition for me to walk across the shore (end-to-end of the island) and gaze at the beauty of the ocean as the sun glistens its waters.
My morning-stroll mate was Budang. Here are our photos. :)

Before we went for a stroll, we made sure that some of the food from our breakfast/lunch menu were cooked, so, yeah, we did our part. Teehee!
When we came back, our newly found friends were already awake and even asked us if they can cook in our "kitchen area". Of course, we allowed them. And there, we had our little bonding time. Some of us were cooking, some were fixing some stuff and some were entertaining the tired ones (oops! That's me!). Lol. I asked KC to teach me how to play her Ukulele. And guess what? I learned! For the first time, I learned how to play the Ukulele! My first piece was "Rude" by Magic! Hahaha! I played, we sang. It was a very chill, island-y moment.
After all the food were cooked, Sir Gilbert advised us to prepare for the next activity on our itinerary: Trekking.
Trekking: Mt. Bira-Bira
We hired a guide to lead us to the easiest path of Mt. Bira-Bira where we could see the fullness of the cove. Take note: It was my first trek ever!
Our path might not be even considered to be a hike or a trek because it was a very easy climb. It took us about 30 minutes to get up there. It wasn't the peak of the mountain, though. It was just a spot for the perfect view of the cove.
Here are our photos from the trekking experience.

The Nagsasa (Cove) Hype/1
My 2015 kicked off with this first out-of-town trip with my fellow Radiologic Technologists.
January 15-16, 2015
Evening of January 14th, I went from duty straight to Quezon City. There, my fellow backpackers and I had our "meet-up". We slept for a few hours in the hospital and woke up at 2 in the morning to prepare the things we needed for the trip. Then, by 3:30 am, we arrived at the bus terminal in Cubao. We boarded the bus going to Olongapo at around 6:30 am due to a long line in the ticket booth and the bus company's lack of buses.
It was around 11 am when we arrived at Olongapo and boarded another bus going to Iba, Zambales. The delay due to the company's lack of buses caused a lot of changes in our itinerary. And it quite pissed me off. We should've been in Nagsasa Cove already by 11 if only our itinerary was strictly followed.
We had no choice of course, so we just pushed through.
I believe that by 1 pm, we reached Nagsasa Cove.
If you've read one of my posts regarding Anawangin Cove, you'd know our route going there. Here's the link to that post: Tales of Anawangin (2013)
Here are the photos taken from our first day of stay in Nagsasa Cove, Zambales!

The Bonfire Night
Next up, the most memorable part of our out-of-town trip, is the bonfire night! It was all about the bonfire, booze, melted marshmallows, half-cooked hotdogs, newly found friends, sensible talks, #5billionstars, and so much more!
I won't post our photos with our newly found friends for privacy! ;)

Lost in BF Homes
Nov. 07, 2014
Another busy Friday for others and for us as well - busy for another gastronomic adventure! This time, Elai and I went to the famous (food) street in BF Homes, Parañaque - Aguirre St. (Kaliwa)
Before we headed there, we made sure that everything's settled so that we'd be prepared enough to get lost!
For lunch, we picked Thai cuisine and we found Songkran with the help of google, of course.
Here are our photos from Songkran, BF Homes, Parañaque.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Spring Rolls were good! Songkran didn't fail to give us a great impression on their Spring Rolls. Yum yum!
I can't rate the service quite well because technically, only two tables were occupied by customers, so, aside from us, the only customers were the ladies behind me.
Songkran has a great dining ambiance. Other reviewers say that it's better to dine there during the evening because the lights create a romantic and serene feels. I bet they're right. Must try that next time.
Heads up! Songkran has definite opening and closing time for lunch and for dinner so you better check their schedules. We were lucky we got there on time for lunch.
As for tradition, Elai and I don't eat desserts on the same place where we had our main course, so, we decided to try the cupcakes of the famous Larcy's Cupcakerycafe!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The food, the place, the service - AWESOME! I recommend this place for everyone, whether you're catching up with your long lost friends; meeting a deadline 'cause you're such a procrastinator; or simply chilling on your weekends.
The price really didn't matter that we would try every cupcake there was in the shelf if we weren't already stuffed. They're worthy of every single peso you have in your pocket! Trust me.
That Blueberry Cheesecake Cupcake I ordered instantly sent me to heaven. Just perfect!
And, hey, they were featured on KrisTV. You'd see a collage of photos showing that Kris Aquino went there. Isn't that amazing?
Next up: Night Life! Our plan was to go to Central BBQ Boy and Grill after dessert but there's still plenty of time and we already consumed almost 3 hours at Larcy's, so we headed out to nowhere.
We decided to walk around the place and look for potential next destination when we come back. We also thought of sweating out the carbs we just ate. Different types of cuisine in a single street is really amazing. If you want Korean, there's one for you. If you want chicken, there's one for you too. A wide variety of kitchen in Aguirre St. How awesome is that? BF Homes is one place you should know if you love gastronomic explorations.
Tumblr media
This BBQ station saved us from our pained feet and curious taste buds. I bet it's famous there because a lot of people come and go and most of them were "suki". Plus, you get to see a ninja grilling right in front of you!
Tumblr media
My forever favorite Isaw ng Manok! Yummy Filipino street food!
And right after we finished our Filipino street food side quest, we headed out to where we're really supposed to be.
No photos were taken during our chill time at Central BBQ Boy and Grill because Elai's phone didn't make it.
Well, of course, we really had fun exploring that one heck of a street with a wide range of choices of cuisine.
Why KALIWA? When you're a commuter, you have to ride the tricycle and tell the driver Aguirre St. Kaliwa because you'll get caught up in an intersection. Choose to turn left!
Again, thank you Elai for your phone and 'til our next! :)

City Escape: Makati, PH
Sept. 19, 2014
Elai and I met again for an overly anticipated plan: our day-off getaway in the city of Makati, the heart of business in NCR.
It all started when Elai decided that we should watch "If I Stay" at a mall in Makati, then, the following happened.
Tumblr media
We ended up with a list. It's not in order, though.
First stop was Makati Medical Center where she visited her friends who are working there. 'Really a world-class hospital.
Tumblr media
This is one of our photos inside MMC.
By lunch time, we went to Elai's favorite food place when she was an intern at MMC.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
101 Hawker Food House is located near MMC. Their specialty is Nasi Goreng, a seafood fried rice, with two pieces of chicken. Both taste good and the sauce, which I first tasted at Wee Nam Kee, tastes delightful.
The serving was hefty so we shared the meal, though, I could eat the whole thing because I didn't eat breakfast that day.
After lunch, we went to Ayala Triangle to grab a photoshoot opportunity in a perfect sunny day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ayala Triangle is a beautiful park. I fell in love with it the moment we sat on the corner and took time to breathe some fresh air under the sunny Friday afternoon sky.
I will share some of the photos from our so-called "photoshoot" on another post.
At 2 in the afternoon, we decided to visit Ayala Museum, not to see the historical articles and all that paintings (because I've seen them already), but to buy the notebook I should've bought when I first went there.
Sadly, the notebook was no good, so I bought a different one. The guard allowed us to take a look at the paintings displayed for a collegiate contest set by a company. The paintings were amazing, specially when you consider that they were made by college students.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I want to give recognition to this beautiful street art we saw along the underpass. I'm in awe with the city's appreciation to art. I hope that the whole country will soon appreciate this kind of art and every art form, specially that there are great Filipino artists nowadays.
We ran our way to the cinema to buy tickets! We're glad there were still good seats left.
Tumblr media
My verdict: The book was amazing but the movie didn't meet my expectations.
While waiting for the sun to come down, we took a break, ate snacks and had chit-chats.
Tumblr media
Awful Takoyaki. -_-
Part of the list was buying Elai's Ukulele. We walked around and looked for it.
Tumblr media
We saw this Tamiya Tournament while walking around. Oh, the good ol' days!
After a while, Elai finally bought her new Ukulele he named... I forgot what she named her Ukulele. She told me it must be a guy's name.
Next stop was Timezone! It was an arcade place for kids and kids at heart!
Here are the things we wasted our money for.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Love the photo booth thing! We had another set of photos but I wasn't able to take a photo of it. Photo of a photo. Lol
Got hungry with all that shooting and posing in front of the camera! We had dinner at Army Navy.
Tumblr media
Elai had Burrito while I had Cheese Quesadilla.
The last stop was Makati Avenue where we had booze and all that YOLO thing. Well, it's just between the two of us. ;)
That sums up our Fri-Date Day-Off! :)
'Til our next...

QC Gastronomic Adventure with Elaiza Joyce! (Gayuma Ni Maria + The Iscreamist)
Friday the 13th wasn't harsh on us. Everything turned well, though, we got quite lost while looking for Gayuma Ni Maria. Lol.
So, anyway, right after watching The Fault in Our Stars (Yes! I shed tears!), we went to Gayuma Ni Maria for lunch!
Location: V. Luna Extension near Maginhawa St., Diliman, Quezon City
Piece of advice: Don't rely on the "house/residential number". Just look for a tree and this signage...
Tumblr media
It's not really the visible one. We haven't had the chance to take a photo of the signage hanging on the huge tree I was saying.
So, there. We walked our way to that place because we got lost. Walkathon, it is.
Elaiza (ubekreme)...
Tumblr media
... insisted to order "Tuliro" for our appetizer. It consisted of Nachos, Lettuce, Slices of Mangoes and Peaches, and Pork (?) Strips...
Tumblr media
Of course, it comes with dressing like cheese and mayonnaise.
For our main dish, I (Yes! ME with that weird bangs!)...
Tumblr media
... decided to order "No Boyfriend Since Birth". It's a pasta dish with Pesto and Shellfish.
Tumblr media
While Elaiza ordered "Hotsie"; a pasta dish as well, but it's spicy and has shrimps.
Tumblr media
Both dishes we ordered came with slices of garlic bread! (Yayyyy!)
For our dessert, we ordered a slice of heaven called Pavlova. We were full already so, I suggested that we share the dessert since we'll be heading to an ice cream shop after.
Tumblr media
Gayuma Ni Maria is known for this dessert, hence, I saw an award of appreciation for this delicious dessert. As far as I could remember, the award said, "... Gayuma Ni Maria for having the most (outstanding) meringue (cakes or dessert)." I wasn't able to take a photo of it.
Anyway, I suggest you try this for yourself. It tastes heavenly!
Verdict:
Tuliro - Elaiza and I constantly craved for it after! We would go back to Gayuma Ni Maria just to have a taste of it again.
No Boyfriend Since Birth - The shellfish quite complemented the salty taste of Pesto. But, the whole dish tasted a little different... but, it is not a bad thing at all. It just tasted weirdly delicious for me.
Hotsie - I was able to taste Elaiza's meal. It kinda reminded me of a Chinese noodle dish because of its texture and taste. The spicy flavor and saltiness of shrimps complemented each other which gave a whole new flavor to the dish.
Pavlova - I'm speechless. :)
Service - The service is okay. I don't blame them if they served a bit slow because I only saw few people doing the stuff (I mean, employees). They're not understaffed, I suppose, because the place is not as big as restaurants at the mall.
Value for Money - Fair enough. My meal could have been served for two persons, but, yeah, I ate it all by myself.
Place - Don't expect a huge place, but, expect it to be cozy and serene. The place is also quiet, which, made my mouth shut for a little while 'cause everyone could hear my story once I talk. I love the idea of putting up lights and quotations on the wall.
Tumblr media
There are also other stuff you may find there. It won't hurt if you look around. ;) And yeah, just in case you might wonder where the stairs are, it's right behind that brown door. (I got lost for a while when I was looking for the restroom. This might help you! Lol.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After satisfying our tummies with delicious meals, we decided to satisfy our sweet tooth!
We headed for The Iscreamist!
Location: Magiting St., Teacher's Village, Diliman, QC
Landmark: Mini-Stop (Turn right once you find Mini-Stop.)
Again, I discourage you to expect a lot when it comes to the size of the area. The Iscreamist is not a place to hangout for a long time... well, in my opinion!
Just like I've said, we went there to satisfy our cravings for sweets and of course, for the famous "Dragon's Breath"!
Tumblr media
Again, we were not able to capture a photo of how it looks like outside.
You'll see this one, though. It's like a menu board or whatever you call it. It's very creative, I should say.
We rested for a while when we got there. And yeah, we ordered for Dragon's Breath. "S'mores" was the only thing available for Dragon's Breath that time.
Tumblr media
They look like BBQs! Lol.
The Rule: Dip the S'mores in the cup of, yes, Liquid Nitrogen for 7 seconds. There are warning signs posted inside the shop, so yeah, you might wanna read that. Be sure that the Liquid Nitrogen boils off when you dip the S'mores. Then, after 7 seconds, eat the whole S'mores with your mouth immediately! The "Dragon's Breath" will instantly come off while you chew. :)
At first, we were hesitant to try it anymore because of the dangers it might cause. And, because of the "boiling" thing, as well. But, what-the-hell if we didn't try it out. We came a long way for it.
We got used to it at second try! I found it very much fun to do!
Since The Iscreamist is an ice cream shop, we tried one of their ice creams! Elaiza and I shared (again) this Blueberry Cheesecake flavored ice cream!
Tumblr media
It's a must try! Not too sweet, not too bland! Just the right blend of sweetness. You'd also feel the chunks of cheesecake in your mouth! ;)
So, there you go! That's how we rolled in QC. It was our first time to roam around that part of the city. I may say, our gastronomic adventure was a success!
Our next will be at...

Tales of Anawangin (2013)
Just a month after our mini out-of-town trip to Calatagan, Batangas, my friends and I went to Anawangin Cove, Zambales. It was a planned trip so, I was prepared.
It was my first time to go out-of-town with friends so I was like "alive, alive, awake, enthusiastic!" I also felt very much independent specially that I'm only in my 20th. It is uncommon in our family to have someone go far away from home at that age. Quite an achievement for me, yes.
I forgot the exact call-time but it was a morning. We met at Victory Liner Bus Terminal at Bustillos, Manila. We hopped into a bus going to Iba, Zambales.
I had to stay at a friend's house the night before to get to the bus station right on the call-time. My friend and I couldn't sleep earlier than usual but we woke up with the help of the phone's alarm and got into the bus station right on time.
It was my first time to go up North after ages, so I took the chance to capture photos along the way.
Tumblr media
I witnessed a huge difference on the road where my father and I used to pass through when we went to Abra (a province in the North, farther than Zambales). The government and businessmen really worked on these changes I saw.
I felt quite sleepy after we passed through Pampanga. I guess, the scenes I saw were enough for the half of the trip.
Tumblr media
That is one weird warning sign for the drivers.
Tumblr media
These caught my attention. Beautiful pieces. :)
Tumblr media
Stop-over is one of my favorite parts of the trip!
I forgot how much time we spent on the road to get to Iba. As far as I could remember, we got there past twelve in the afternoon.
Tumblr media
Rockin' my Perry The Platypus Bag. Hello, Zambales!
The bus dropped us off the municipal hall of Iba, Zambales. Beside it was a small market so we headed there to buy things we needed for our stay at the island.
Right after visiting the market, we rode a tricycle to get us to the boat station. It is a must to take the boat when going directly to Anawangin Cove. There's no other way since it is an island.
Our group took two separate tricycle rides. After quite a while, we were starting to doubt our driver. Yeah, our team got lost. We tried to reach the other team via phone call but it was difficult. Thank Heavens, we were able to settle the mess. I got quite scared because I was new to the place but I took it as a fun detour.
Finally, we got to our second stop! To the boats!
Tumblr media
Spot my yellow cover-up! Posing a wide smile with the happiest friends I ever met!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nah! I'm not gonna wear a life vest 'cause it would kill the fun! YOLO as what they say.
Tumblr media
Take me to the island is the title of this photo. :)
Tumblr media
Nothing but bunch of islands around and the blue sea beneath us.
I could still feel the sea breeze that afternoon. I felt the time slowing down in front of me. I thought we had hours of boat ride just to realize we only spent almost an hour and a half (as far as I could remember, again).
Anawangin Cove's Entrance Fee was Php 100.00, with free cottage for the night and toilets for use. Good thing we brought our own tents to secure our luggage and important stuff. Aside from free cottage and toilet use, other things were not for free. Of course, the prices of the food like rice and canned goods were doubled due to the island's distance from the city. There were woods available if you want to create a bonfire at night, which we did!
Tumblr media
That was the "entrance gate" of the Cove. Simple and alluring.
Tumblr media
Boats, people, stores, the sand and the beach - the island was not bad at all.
Tumblr media
A perfect place to relax, meditate, reflect - whatever you call it. Anawangin Cove is one budget-friendly paradise. To add up the "meditative vibe", this island has no electricity, communication signals and fresh water, which will make you work on your own, think your thoughts out and enjoy the scenery without interruption.
Tumblr media
That's us building our home for the night.
Tumblr media
Our CAMPSITE! <3
Tumblr media
Thanks to Daddy R for this photo. One good friend, indeed! :))
Tumblr media
After settling down, it's time for photography loving! Whatever you call it!
Tumblr media
There's Abby setting up the camera like a pro.
The beach called us up and we couldn't resist it! So, we swam 'til the moon came up!
Tumblr media
As always, there should be a jumpshot from each trip I get into! :)
Tumblr media
Do it like a camper! Preparing our dinner the conventional way. It's way much fun when you do it with friends! :)
It was a night of bonfire, liquor, story-telling and so much laughter! I wouldn't go into so much details. (I'm laughing my ass out right now as I write this article. I could remember the crazy stuff we did!) Swimming during the night is much incredible than on daytime, specially when you're drunk and all that. (That is only applicable to adults/grown-ups as it is very dangerous to do such.)
I was the first one to wake up in the morning. I woke up in a dump of trash. I couldn't believe that we left so much garbage that night! We were really drunk I believe. I took the initiative to clean up 'cause our campsite was outstanding! I could remember those chocolate bar wrappers, junk food wrappers and bottles of liquor scattered around us. Yeah, disgusting and crazy! My friends woke up one by one while I was cleaning.
After settling the mess, we prepared for an adventure which I could never ever forget!
Less photo this time because we savored the moments alone with Mother Nature... NAH! My digicam drowned! It was one horrifying tragedy. R.I.P. Baby Sam! You'll always be remembered.
Wonder how I managed to retrieve my photos? Good thing my digicam broke down slowly. It became fully dysfunctional the day after the trip.
How did it happen? My friend and I decided to take a stroll as my other friends were hesitant to walk around that morning. Hangover, I guess. We walked along the stretch of the island just to realize that we boarded on the wrong part of the island. There's this much convenient place of Anawangin wherein there were "kubos" (nipa huts) and much better cottages. There was fresh water on the site as well. So, yeah, we got shocked, a slight regret, there was, but we just tossed the fact that we were fooled.
We continued to walk until we reached that huge rock formation. Fearlessly, I decided to climb through it. My friend had no choice but to come with me. We left our slippers on the shore before proceeding. I was aware that I had my digicam with me. Into my aggression, I didn't mind that it was an electronic gadget! As we climbed up, my foot slipped a bit and took my balance out of me. I had to regain my balance so I swung my hand where my camera was held, and POOF! My camera swam with my hand. It was a shocking accident and I didn't mind it until I realized that Baby Sam is totally gone. As a souvenir, I also got a boo boo on my right foot. It slipped between sharp rocks.
Though my camera died and my foot got wounded, I still felt the relaxation the island had offered. We stayed in this small cave where there were lots of beautiful seashells and stones. There were irregular shaped-stones and seashells with unusual colors. The bright blue sky and the sound of the sea made me feel totally relaxed. The horizon was beautiful as the sky met the water. We could also see boats coming into the island. There were also people who passed by us but we didn't mind. It was the core of my sweet escape from the city. Even though I didn't have photos of the scenes and everything, I still could remember how they made me feel in awe.
We went back into the campsite to call out our friends and tell them that there's this special place in the island.
We went back, but this time, we passed by the small cave and went farther. It was the one of the wildest adventures I've been to so far.
By the afternoon, we packed our things and cleaned up our camp. We took the chance to have henna tattoos and bought souvenirs.
Tumblr media
I used my iPod Touch as a substitute to my digicam. There's my fresh henna tattoo!
Tumblr media
Taking a last walk on this precious place.
Tumblr media
Leaving the island with a smile! Would always want to go back here! By next time, we will assure that we land on the more convenient area.
We took the boat ride back into the place where the tricycle dropped us off. We took the tricycle ride back to Iba. When we reached Iba, we took an ordinary bus going to Olongapo. From there, we looked for buses going back to Manila but there were few and most of them were full of passengers. We waited 'til midnight. All of us got cranky that we were almost lured into a fight.
Tumblr media
Strike a pose tired earthlings! Smile all the way.
By the way, Olongapo is a nice place. A scene of Tokyo flashed into my mind as I crossed the pedestrian lane. Maybe, it was because of the digital billboards lighting up the whole area, plus, the crossing paths of pedestrian lanes.
We rode a bus named "Baliwag Transit" which was bound to Pasay. The travel time was fast because it was almost midnight.
Those were the Tales of Anawangin which I can never forget. How we got lost, how my camera died in front of me, how my foot got wounded and how Anawangin Cove relieved all my worries just by simply being naturally stunning!
Things we missed:
Nature tripping and trekking
Cool Nipa Huts
Shower with Fresh Water
As what they say, there's always a next time!
