And hey, at least this means the recent Hudson & Rex episode got the injury setup right. (And yes, this means I may be actually working on writing this Charlie whumpfic.)

If a character gets his upper arm slashed by a knife during a fight and it nicks the artery, what would be the immediate symptoms (besides the obvious blood loss)? How long before he passes out/things get bad? In the situation, there are people right there, so he'd get a tourniquet and rushed to help quickly - but how fast would they have to move to save him?

Arteries are pretty well protected. They live on the inside of the arm just under the bone. So in order to slash an arm in a way that would hit an artery without going through bone, you would have to slash the inside of the arm.

This is certainly possible.

Nicking an artery is actually worse than severing one, because when an artery is severed, it constricts and retreats into the sheath it lives in, reducing blood loss. A torn or nicked artery may have a situation where the sheath covers the injury and slows blood loss, but this is less common. Both of these account for the wide range in times it takes for someone to bleed out.

Assuming the person was otherwise healthy, the brachial artery (the artery in the upper arm) takes anywhere from 5-60 minutes to bleed enough to put the person at risk for death. The further from the time of injury, however, the less blood the person has available and the more will need replaced. So I'd say they have probably 1-2 minutes to get the bleeding stopped.

Here are a few more just for reference:

Carotid artery: 2-20 minutes

Jugular vein: 15-60 minutes

Femoral artery: 5-60 minutes

Aorta or any part of the heart: 1-2 minutes

Petition for the missing scene between blood running down Charlie's arm in the prison yard and the phone conversation where we find out the knife nicked his artery and he had to have surgery.

I mean, I get that the writers didn't want to totally lay him up and basically throw out the case but...

Seeing as how the original series had Rex arrest a guy on his own one time, I need a fic where Rex and the others solve the case while Charlie is in the hospital. 👀

Houndsight

Well, after that writer's game post yesterday where I said I was stuck trying to figure out my scene organization, I finally figured out what I wanted to do.

And so here's the next chapter in my current WIP, also known as the blind!Charlie fic.

And yes, there's a fight scene, but it's me so are you really surprised? However, much as I love him and he had high hopes for it, gotta say that it doesn't quite go like how our hero probably hoped... 😈 (Do I hear complaining? I certainly hope not. There's none from me.)

(I also apologize for the delay in between chapters, but there was this whole thing where I fought a kidney stone and a few infections during literally the entire month of December (and missed holidays with my family, so that was fun) and then spent most of January recovering, so you're kind of lucky you're even getting another chapter so soon, really, if you look at it that way.)

Are we operating under the definition of a WIP being something that's posted but unfinished? Because in that case, my answer is 4 - except 3 of those are drabble collections that may never have anything else added.

However, if we're considering a WIP as anything I've started even if it's not posted, that puts us in the neighborhood of... about *counts* 3 dozen. (And that is not counting the random ideas I have scribbled down, just documents with actual narrative content written already, however long or short it may be.)

🛠Is there a scene or anything in the WIP you are struggling with right now?

Since Houndsight is the main WIP I have posted and going right now, I'll answer for that one. My current struggle with it is that I try to keep my chapters around the same amount, give or take. So that means this next one should be about 4,500 words. However, I finally got to the end of the main action sequence for this chapter and I'm at 5,200. Trying to figure out if I should split it or just have a mega chapter.

Also I actually need to figure out how I want to end it... I kept telling myself I'd cross that bridge when I got to it and now I'm nearly there. 😅

Hmmm Well considering I get an average of 2 new ideas every day (and usually make the mistake of not writing them down), that's hard to answer. 😅 I do still have the idea rattling around in my brain to put the Timeless team in WW2 France where they have to team up with the X Company team. But that sentence is as far as my brain has gone so far on the idea as of today.

Have you ever wished Hudson & Rex would go with the blindness trope one episode so Rex could shine even more as the goodest boy there ever was (and so Charlie could get whumped a little more)? Me too...

...so I wrote it. 😁

And I finally updated it tonight! 😇 Chapter 4 of Houndsight Is 20/20 is officially finished and posted. (Now for the rest of the chapters, but I think that particular plot bunny is back with a vengeance so hopefully it won't take too long for more updates.)
