I’ve been told by dozens of agents that there isn’t a market for my #ownvoices series about a group of queer kids surviving the apocalypse.
please reblog this if you’d be interested in an LBGT+ sci-fi YA book, I want to prove a point

Three Steps From Home: Update 4
Hey everyone! Long time, no see! Basically, I’ve been unmotivated for the past month or so, and as a result I’ve barely touched my socials. Good news, I’ve written the next eleven or so chapters of my WIP, and it’s almost doubled in word count lol. I don’t want to do a full sized update on every chapter because that would take a stupidly long amount of time, so I’m just gonna summarize and then give a little excerpt (this ended up being chapters 11-16) Not every quote has a picture because I am a tad lazy lol. Enjoy!
Trigger Warnings: Emotional abuse, toxic relationships, homophobia, self harm, suicide, mental health, drug use, religious content
Disclaimer: Please don’t steal my words, ideas, characters, etc.
chapter eleven - problem child - 2118 words
theme song - if i get high - nothing but thieves
summary: Jude and Aaron have one last dinner with Jude’s mother before moving to Seattle. Shit goes down, Jude’s father is addressed, Jude’s mom has an anti-religious experience, everyone is upset.
except - Jude thinking about his family before his dad left
I was two months from finishing my Junior year as a top student, six from applying to every out of state school I could think of, fourteen from leaving everything and never coming back. From the outside, the Alvarez-Carter family was a model of the American dream; we took family photos everywhere we went and cooked each other dinners on alternating days of the week. We  attended every house party, where my mother exchanged gossip like trading cards and my dad sipped Bud Light from a bottle and played cornhole. At those same parties, I flirted shamelessly with every girl in the vicinity, then cited my religion as the reason I wouldn’t do more than exchange pretty words.
The night dad left wasn’t the first time my parents fought in front of me, but it was the night they shattered the already paper thin barrier they had held between me and their issues. I never knew who started it, never knew who threw the first punch, but I knew who delivered the killing blow.
chapter twelve - golden days - 854 words
theme song - ribs - lorde,  also chelsea - phoebe bridgers
summary: Aaron and Jude move into their new apartment, very light airy vibes, Jude idealizing everything, Aaron and Jude being adorable (yeah can you tell nothing actually happens in this one lmao).
excerpt - Aaron and Jude leaving Montana
Tumblr media
A taxi dropped us off at the Amtrak station the next morning. Our breath rose in front of us on the platform, I tiled my head back and tasted the sunlight; sweet and overflowing with new beginnings. Maybe, I’d be lucky enough to catch one for both of us.
chapter thirteen - unholy creation - 900 words
theme song - reflections - the neighborhood
summary: Aaron’s mental health takes a turn, Jude is worried but has no idea what to do, Jude and Aaron fight for no good reason
excerpt - a description of Aaron falling off several wagons
Tumblr media
You were a shell of fragile bones and sharp edges when I wrapped an arm around you during a scary movie or curled against your chest late at night. You started wearing a flannel or a sweatshirt over every outfit, an extra layer to hide your ribs and hip bones and elbows, so sharp they could cut through glass. I stopped holding you so tight, afraid of the snap of calcium or cartilage or spirit.
okay one more because I like this chapter haha - Aaron getting mad when Jude asks about his parents
“It’s not about them, alright? I’m not going to talk about them because they’re not part of my life, they don’t control anything. Stop asking about them because they don’t matter, and I wouldn’t tell you if they did.”
You said the words like a chant, a litany, like you were the one who needed convincing. I pictured my mother in her dark dining room, palms up to God, praying for a miracle. You looked like her then, all the fear and anger coming out in one jumble of meaningless words. I flinched away when I should have stood my ground.
chapter fourteen - (has a title but I hate it) - 674 words
theme song - fear of falling asleep - TENDER
summary - Jude has a mental breakdown, Aaron buys him sleeping pills and then takes them himself, they (kind of) fight, everything is toxic
excerpt - Jude watching Aaron sleep (it’s a weird chapter)
You took my meds that night, I cheeked them until you turned your back, then spit them into the dishwater and washed them down with green suds and scraps of tofu and rice. An hour later, you were passed out in our bed, skeletal limbs stretching out like the fragile branches of a birch tree. I watched as your chest rose and fell, dappled in moonlight and the neon buzz of constant electricity. For a few moments at a time, I convinced myself that your steady rhythm of in-and-out had stopped, I watched as you left this world and then came back. I couldn’t tell how much time was in between.
chapter fifteen - forest, electric (aka my favorite chapter in the book?) - 1279 words
theme song - are you bored yet - wallows
summary - in an attempt to renew their relationship, Aaron takes Jude on a hike to a construction site in the middle of the night. The two sit on the roof and watch the sunrise.
excerpt - starting the adventure
Tumblr media
We walked four blocks south to meet our Uber, then set off down the winding streets of the city. It was one in the morning and if I looked close enough, I could convince myself I had woken up in a ghost town. Or maybe I was stuck in dreamland, where my boyfriend was perfect and everything I saw was real and I didn’t have to negotiate with myself when I needed an hour or two of rest.
excerpt - the end of the chapter that I just really like
We didn’t talk about our problems that night; we pretended I wasn’t sick and you weren’t hooked. That night, my mother didn’t hate you, we visited your parents once a year during glamorous Scottish vacations, we weren’t runaways. We dangled our feet over the edge of the roof, neither of us thought about jumping, about how our stomachs would drop faster than our bodies, about the inevitable crush of bones and life that awaited at the bottom.
That night, we leaned into each other and locked our hands and whispered ‘I love yous’ until a band of pink and orange lit the horizon and we realized we would get caught if we stayed much longer. We walked the two miles home and fell asleep curled in each other’s arms an hour before your 7:00AM alarm, two before you would leave the apartment again, eight before you would return home just before your high wore off.
I knew all these realities to be true at once, so I breathed in cologne and coffee grounds, took a picture in my head so that image of you, asleep and unaddicted and bathed in the sunrise, would stay with me forever.
chapter sixteen - gods and monsters - 1378 words
theme song - freakin out on the interstate - briston maroney
Tumblr media
summary - Aaron and Jude’s friends come over for the Fourth of July, Aaron comes home drunk and makes his friends leave, Jude’s friend tells Jude to break up with Aaron, Jude refuses
excerpt - Jude convincing himself that everything is fine when it is clearly not fine (aka the theme of the book and also should probably be the title)
You were sallow and gaunt, your hair was greasy, your breath smelled of vomit and alcohol and whatever else you had taken. You were a monster in our bed, but I could feel that lazy half smile against my skin. I could close my eyes and see you sitting in that tea shop, long limbs sprawled over the pillows, the sun on your skin making you glow like a god.
That image of you couldn’t lie, not when I had lived that moment, not when it had been so beautiful. I wouldn’t leave you because you would be alright and this would pass. You convinced me everything would look better in the morning, all our problems would fade with the rising sun.
You were wrong. They didn’t.
Okay, this is getting way too long so I’m gonna end it here! Thank you so much if you actually read all that! If you want more information on any chapter, just message me and I will do that. The update on the last few chapters of the first draft should be out somewhat soon, and I may or may not have a new WIP coming up :)
ALSO, it has come to my attention that most people have these things called taglists? And I don’t have one? If you wanna be on mine for this project, or any future projects, message me or repost this and I will make one. Thank you for reading!

Three Steps From Home - Update #3
Hey everyone, I guess I’m back again. Today, I’m gonna update on the next two chapters of my current WIP. This will be about chapters nine and ten, AKA 3558 words of an honestly stupid amount of food description, Jude being emo, and Aaron deciding if he’s amused or horrified. This is a long one, so the update is under the break.
TRIGGER WARNING: homophobia, emotional abuse, religious content, mentions of conversion therapy
ALSO: these are all my personal words, characters and ideas, please do not use without my consent.
chapter nine - how you met my mother - 1944 words
theme song - let you down - NF
Okay so this chapter is kind of emo and every much a mess, sorry in advance. I’m going to rework this chapter because Aaron is just kind of there and he doesn’t pull his weight (or literally any weight oops), so keep that in mind.
Summary: Aaron and Jude meet Jude’s mom for brunch, and this chapter is basically just the drama that goes down at the brunch and then the fallout that happens afterwards.
excerpts:
Jude VS his mother feat. Aaron just trying to be nice
Tumblr media
Maybe once a month, my mother remembered she was a competent cook and there’s more food to be eaten than microwave dinners and cheap takeout. She had recalled her cooking skills that day, and apart from her eggs, which were notoriously near-poisonous, the meal was almost enjoyable.
My mother sat on one side of the table and we occupied the other, she served beans, fried potatoes, corn tortillas, and those damn eggs. We held a casual enough conversation, but your knee was already pressed into mine in case things went off the deep end. You wanted to feel my muscles contract, you wanted to drag me out before I said anything I would regret.
“Why him?” my mother finally asked in Spanish when she had enough of our bullshit and pleasantries.
“Because,” I answered in English. “He’s a good guy, he looks out for me. We’re a good match, Ma, he makes me happy.”
You beamed at me as I avoided my mother’s gaze, and for a moment, I thought that would be the end of it. Across the table, she sighed as if I was the nurse who told her that her only son died. To be fair, I may have done the equivalent; in her universe, you weren’t supposed to make me happy, and nothing would have shattered that world, not even my smile when I looked at you.
and... Jude’s mom bringing up his MAJOR daddy issues
Tumblr media
“Get rid of him, before he abandons you like your father did,” she hissed in Spanish the second you were gone. “No one can love you when you are like this, especially not that boy, and especially not me.”
I bit the inside of my cheek so hard I tasted blood and tried not to look like a kicked animal. “You don’t know Aaron, Ma,” I said carefully, finally answering her Spanish with my own. “He’s not Dad. He likes me as I am, just like you should.”
Her eyes shone, and I knew I had set her up to say exactly what she wanted, I had given her the perfect setup, the gasoline for her fire. “He’s worse than your father. He will always make you feel like an outsider, you will never know how he really feels. But, if you go now, the pastor will still take you. He agreed that you’d be a tough case, that you’re almost beyond help, but he can help you, Jude.”
The way she said it, the proposal almost sounded fair. Thankfully, you cut her off with desert balanced on your arms in a way that only a barista would know how. You set cups of caramel custard in front of us and I dug into mine before I said anything I shouldn’t have.
I’m not going to share anymore because I don’t really like this chapter, but essentially what happens is Jude’s mom is unpleasant, Jude and Aaron leave and Aaron almost talks about his mother, but doesn't (and no one is surprised).
chapter ten - x (I cannot figure out what to call this one haha) - 1606 words
theme song - TALK ME DOWN - troye sivan
I actually don’t mind how this chapter turned out. I love the dynamic between Jude and Aaron in this one, it makes me strangely happy even though it’s not necessarily a happy chapter.
Summary: This one takes place a few months after the last one, Jude and his mother haven’t really talked and he’s finally starting to feel more free of her. Aaron surprises Jude on his birthday with breakfast and fake Amtrak tickets, and the two decide to move to Seattle together. There is a small flashback of the boys after the events of chapter ten where Aaron gets upset.
excerpts:
Aaron and Jude joking about the brunch with Jude’s mom (featuring my favorite piece of Aaron dialogue because he would totally become Gordon Ramsey if he thought he could pull it off)
Tumblr media
Your breakfast was excellent. The pancakes were fluffy and sweat, they carried the telltale taste of Krusteaz mix, the kind my dad had made on special occasions. The sausages were as good as frozen supermarket sausages could get, and your eggs were miles better than my Mother’s, which were essentially my only point of reference.
“These might be the best eggs I’ve ever had,” I said.
“That’s only because your Mother’s eggs are, no offense, horrible. I think I saw her put cinnamon in those things. Cinnamon! That’s like the first rule they teach you at cooking school: don’t put cinnamon in your fucking eggs.”
Tumblr media
A week later, it was decided. You wanted a place we could discover together. I wanted to get away from churchgoers who talked about Jesus like a cult leader and called me a sinner when they passed on the street, just loud enough for me to hear. I wanted to hold your hand without looking over my shoulder.
I insisted on buying the cardboard moving boxes, but you stole my computer when you saw the Amtrak website open in my browser, refusing to let me buy my own birthday present. We decided on Seattle because you wanted to smell the sea breeze wafting from the Pacific, the only ocean you’d never seen. Seattle because I had never seen an ocean or a big city, because I wanted to go to the top of the Space Needle every weekend, because it was far away from nowhere, Montana.
Our apartment was packed within a week, we didn’t have many possessions to speak of; most of yours were books that stacked neatly into boxes, and I barely had a trash bag’s worth of clothing to call my own. We surfed the internet until we could find an apartment we didn’t hate on a street that wasn’t claustrophobic, but was still close enough to the bustle of the city that we would still be able to hear the noise and taste the gasoline on every street corner. In another week, we would be gone, in a month, we would be forgotten altogether.
Okay, well there it is! At this point, updates will probably all be 1-2 chapters each because I’ve almost caught up with myself. I hope you enjoyed this update, send me an ask if you have questions! Thanks for reading if you’ve gotten this far, and remember: don’t put cinnamon on your fucking eggs.

Three Steps From Home - Novel Update #2
Hey everyone! Today, I’m going to do my second update on Three Steps From Home. This should be the last update with more than 1-2 chapters, after this I’ll be pretty much caught up to what I’m writing now. This update will cover chapters 5-8, and together, these chapters add up to 4361 words. Warning, this is going to be long because I like these chapters, sorry lol.
Disclaimer: These are all my original thoughts and words, please do not steal them.
Trigger warning: Mental illness, mentions of suicide and self harm, homophobia, conversion therapy
chapter five - rest stop monsters - 1571 words
theme song - the village - warbel
This chapter is maybe the most chaotic in the book. We get the first taste of Jude being a bit unhinged and unreliable as a narrator.
summary: Jude’s mother threatens to send him to conversion therapy, which causes a massive fight between the two. Jude packs a backpack and hits the road, making it a few miles on foot before he breaks down and calls Aaron from a rest stop.
Excerpts:
Jude’s mother trying to send him to conversion therapy:
Mother clicked the TV off so hard, the rubber button got stuck in the plastic base. Her knuckles crackled as she shifted, turning the hard, unblinking stare of concentration usually reserved for priests on me. The reverence she used when looking at someone who spun God’s words like steel ribbons was gone, replaced by the look of someone who has found a dead thing in their house
“Father John and I have been talking,” she said, choosing her words carefully. Nothing good ever started with that phrase. “We’ve been talking, and we think you’re beyond our help. Beyond… normal help.”
No shit. I had been ‘beyond help’ since I was a kid, it was a miracle it had taken her so long to come to the same conclusion I had. “Okay… so what now?”
I knew the answer before I formed the words, but I wanted to hear her say it anyway. I wanted it to sting, I wanted a reason to blow up in her face. She fed my fire, she would watch as it burned me.
Jude having a breakdown at a rest stop:
Tumblr media
I brought my knees in closer to myself and shivered, my chest collapsed in on itself and my lungs emptied. The rest stop monsters closed in; I didn’t look at them. The minutes I spent waiting for you felt like hours.
By the time you pulled into the parking lot in your used blue pickup, I was half asleep, the start of a nasty cold already coursing through my blood. You parked next to me and got out, silhouetted against your headlights so you looked like someone else.
chapter six - Duo of Trespassers - 1266 words
theme song - mars - YUNGBLUD
Chapter five is definitely kind of a downer, but don’t worry, this book likes to play with your emotions so chapter six is weirdly... upbeat? This one is kind of hard to me to describe because the mood is very back and forth. It takes place the morning after chapter five.
Summary: Jude wakes up at Aaron’s apartment, and they are now on a mission to break into Jude’s mother’s house and steal his stuff.
excerpts:
Aaron talking about his past and then changing his mind and saying nothing:
“Good idea. When I moved out, my folks…” you trailed off, but it was enough to make me turn around. You had talked about your family just enough for me to know that you had one, and you probably weren’t adopted, although even that was foggy for me. Whenever I asked about them, you clammed up, changed the subject, complimented my eyes or the new sticker I had put on my laptop. I had stopped asking.
You waved me off like it was no big deal, but something about you had shifted already. You moved like a sparrow, ready to take flight at any second. You had paled a shade, your hands wouldn’t stop moving; adjusting the string at the waist of your shorts, then to your hood, putting it up, back down again, raking your fingers through your hair as if you were trying to pull it out by the chunk.
“It doesn’t matter,” you lied to my raised eyebrows. “Today’s about your bullshit, not mine. Now let’s get moving before we lose our nerve.”
“Aaron…” I should have stopped thinking about myself then, should have told you to go to work while I sorted my shit out, should have grabbed your hands and demanded you tell me something real about your life before I met you, but I didn’t. My tunnel vision didn’t include your distress, it barely included mine.
Jude and Aaron breaking into Jude’s old house:
Tumblr media
My mother’s car was thankfully absent from the driveway when we pulled up. I slouched down in my seat and scoured the street for snoopy neighbors, determining after nearly five minutes that there weren’t any.
You boosted me through the same window I had used to leave the night before, left wide open, as if she had wanted me to return so she could trap me inside. Your fingers were freezing as I pulled you in after me, a duo of trespassers in a room that was still mine.
seven - high on nothing - 1011 words
theme song - peanut butter waffles - ryan caraveo
Summary: This chapter takes place three weeks after the events of the previous chapter. Jude gets a call from his mother for the first time since they fought and he moved out, and agrees to take Aaron to meet her over brunch. Aaron spends the rest of the chapter assuring Jude that he isn’t afraid of Jude’s mother, and he does want to meet her. Essentially, the whole chapter is Jude having an emo moment and Aaron eating his spaghetti and begging Jude not to worry.
Beginning paragraph:
It was three weeks before my mother finally called me. Three weeks of being high with glee when I remembered she wasn’t waiting for me when I got home, ready to tear into me like a bear tears into its prey. Three weeks of feeling like I was looking into the chasm where her anger bubbled just under out of sight, ready to swallow me whole if I got too close to the edge.
Jude speaking with his mother on the phone:
Tumblr media
“Jude?” she finally said, her pronunciation just a little off. My mother didn’t speak the language of apologies, but she stumbled through one that night. Her voice was hard as a brick wall, she was going against her better judgement, some part of her probably regretting it already. I let her talk.
She didn’t ask me to move back in, she didn’t ask me to change, she didn’t even ask me to go to church with her, which must have been a first. Instead, through gritted teeth, she said the words I never expected to hear from her. “Will you at least bring… him around the house? If you’re going to be dating, I deserve to meet him, at the very least.”
More of Jude being afraid of his mother...
I rolled my eyes and tried not to think about what my mother would say when she met you, how she would probably go after how you dressed first, and then the slight crookedness to your nose that I always thought made you more beautiful. Next, it would be: ‘does he even speak Spanish?’ And after that would come the obligatory: ‘I loved a white boy once, and do you know what it got me? An ungrateful son like you and a high mortgage.’  Then, she would pick you apart by the personality trait, by the star sign; tear you up and leave you in a heap on the floor.
Jude explaining to Aaron why he’s afraid to see his mother
“My mother is… well you’ve heard the stories. My mother isn’t nice, she’s kind of a nightmare, actually. She doesn’t have a kind bone in her body, and she hates sinners more than anything. And she’ll probably insult everything about you. She’ll definitely try to shame me into marrying a Guatemalan girl from the next town over and having ten Christian kids and sending them to church school and having a dysfunctional family that looks perfect from the outside and then dying sad and alone.”
chapter eight - black and white - 505 words
theme song - untitled - EDEN (yes I've used this song before, but it’s one of the theme songs of the whole book and also its so pretty lol)
This is the shortest chapter in the book, and it’s definitely way underwritten, so I’ll be coming back to it.
Summary: Aaron takes Jude to a drive in movie the night before their brunch with Jude’s mother to cheer him up. Aaron falls asleep, Jude drives home and reflects on his life.
Jude and Aaron being cute on the way to the movie:
You taught me words of the french you had learned in school as you drove, laughing when my pronunciation sounded more like ‘sad Spanish’. Eventually, I crossed my arms and spent the next ten minutes speaking only my mother tongue, which came back to me faster than I would have imagined after avoiding the language for years.
“Not bad, not bad,” you admitted when I finally got bored and switched back to english. “I mean, it doesn’t beat my secondary school French, but you’re getting there.”
I laughed and rolled my eyes. I had learned Spanish and English at the same time, and until elementary school, I mixed them like they were one. I was smart enough to know the difference as the words rolled off my tongue, but not smart enough to understand that not everyone spoke that way. It took my kindergarten teacher kneeling in front of me on the second day of school and explaining that his classroom was for english only for me to realize that I was different.
Aaron falling asleep at the end: (I had a picture for this one but it got corrupted so RIP)
I’m not sure exactly when you fell asleep, it was somewhere between the last (and only) good jump scare, when you swore like a sailor and then laughed until there were tears in your eyes, and the end of the movie.
Half the cars had already packed up and left before I slid your head onto one of the pillows and pulled a blanket to your chin. You shifted in your sleep, but didn’t wake. I shoved all the blankets into the passenger seat and then shook you just enough so one bleary blue eye opened. You were stretched out in the backseat, asleep before I could say anything.
Okay, there it is! I hope you enjoyed this update, because I had a really good time making it! As always, feel free to message me if you have any questions! Thank you for reading if you made it this far.

Three Steps From Home - Update #1
trigger warnings: religious content, abusive relationship, mental health, slight self harm implications, conversion therapy
disclaimer: these are my own words and ideas, please do not use my words or ideas without permission from me.
Hi everyone! Today I’m going to do a lil update on one of my current WIPs, Three Steps From Home. I’m going to be talking about the first four chapters, aka the first 4500ish words. If you want a more detailed description of the book or the characters, my last post is the introduction to this project, so you can find more details there.
chapter one - casual acquaintances - 969 words
theme song - like or like like, by miniature tigers
In this chapter, we meet the point of view character, Jude, as well as his love interest, Aaron. This chapter is mainly to introduce Jude’s voice and worldview, as well as how he sees Aaron without really knowing him. The inciting incident comes near the end of the chapter, when Aaron sits down to talk to Jude for the first time and the two strike up a conversation and Jude tries (and fails) to make a move.
“Even my mother’s Saturday night bingo group, who hated outsiders like they hated blasphemy, wouldn’t stop talking about you, or ‘that boy Aaron from the coffee shop,’ as they called you. ‘The cute one with the accent’. On those nights, I sipped spiked lemonade and passed out homemade cookies and tried not to hang onto their every word whenever you came into conversation”
“I supposedly worked from home, but I couldn’t stand home, so I worked from your coffee shop and pretended I wasn’t just another kid with a pile of student debt and a semi-failing career, living with his mother like an absolute loser. I pretended I didn’t watch you every time the production line of presentations got dull, every time the words swam from the page and my brain turned the texture of the dollops of whipped cream you put in hot chocolate”
chapter two - microwave dinners - 1347 words
theme song - untitled, by EDEN
This is the chapter where we meet Jude’s mom, who is honestly a piece of work. Jude is 21 at the start of the story, living with his mother as he saves money and continues to take computer science classes. His mother’s religion is a big source of tension in the story, and their unhealthy relationship is the centerpiece of this chapter. Jude comes home to find his mother watching a televangelist program, which eventually leads them to a fight, implying his mother’s wish to send him to conversion therapy, as well as alluding to Jude’s dad, who is not present in the story for unknown reasons.
“It was my dad who insisted on naming me Jude. He said it was biblical, but not overly so, not like the names my mother had picked. He always told me I was named for the book of Jude so I would remember what would happen if I lost my faith. Really, he named me Jude because it was near impossible for my mother’s native Spanish tongue to get right, and he liked watching her frustrated, he liked helping her get there”
“As it was, we walked on eggshells. My dad was no longer there to be a buffer between her anger and me. His name hovered in the air between us like a bomb, every time I brought him up, she would cross herself and mutter something like a prayer and get angrier by the second. I made myself scarce in hopes she would forget that her no longer perfect child still lurked under her roof like an unwanted animal, taking up the space the man she once loved did not”
chapter three - tea at midnight - 1042 words
theme song - perfume, by mehro
This chapter is very cute and wholesome, it balances out the sad feels you get from chapter two. In this chapter, Jude asks Aaron to hang out, and the two end up at a 24 hour tea shop, where they stay and talk until they have to get ready for work the next morning. There’s not much to this chapter events wise, but it does mark their first dateish thing, and it develops their characters a lot. It’s definitely one of my favorite chapters because of how light and dreamy it is.
“Maybe it was because I picked up a Mandarin-to-English dictionary to prove my point, but you obviously didn’t buy my story. You watched me over the corner of your fourth novel-in-progress, eyebrows raised so high they disappeared behind the rims of your glasses.
You glanced at your watch and sighed. ‘You know I’m going to have to kick you out in four minutes, yeah? Is there something I can get you?’”
“We sat in the cafe until we had created an impressive mound of dirty tea cups and the morning sun kissed our cheeks. We only left when we had to get ready for work. I was exhausted, an important afternoon meeting I had neglected to prepare for loomed like a distant storm cloud, but for the first time in a long while, I was happy, and I think you were too”
chapter four - circles - 1155 words
theme song - they’ll like me when im sick, by flatsound
This is my least favorite chapter in the book so far, and I’ll probably rework it, so everything in this part is subject to massive change (even more than the rest of this post). Basically, this is the chapter where both Jude and the reader get the sense that Aaron has problems he doesn’t talk about. Jude comes into Aaron’s coffee shop at his usual time and notices that Aaron is kind of out of it. Aaron’s coworker eventually convinces Jude to take Aaron home, and Jude spends the rest of the day trying to figure out what's wrong (spoiler, he doesn’t figure it out). This chapter also has a bit of a reflective aspect, as Jude criticizes himself for the things he should have done better.
Again, this chapter is a mess and I don’t know how to explain what happens well. Sorry about that lol.
“When I opened the door, your coworker’s eyes widened in a look that demanded attention. She jerked her head at you twice, a spectacularly unsubtle gesture, and then pointed out the door and in the direction of your apartment”
“Fifteen minutes later, you slipped into the booth next to me instead of across the table, breaking our little routine for the second time that day. You pressed your back into my shoulder and brought one knee to your chest, your other foot dangling over the edge of the seat. I squeezed your hand under the table (always under the table) and tried not to worry”
Well, there it is! I hope you enjoyed this update if you’ve made it this far! As always, let me know if you have any questions about the story. I hope you have a nice day!

Novel Introduction!!
TRIGGER WARNING (for the entire book and this post): emotional abuse, mental health issues, self harm, religious content, suicide, drugs/alchohol abuse
Disclaimers: This is all my original work, so please don’t steal the ideas/quotes I share in these posts. Also, please remember that just because my characters do dumb/bad things, does not mean I condone or do said dumb/bad things. Thank you!
Hi everyone, I hope you all are doing well! Today, I’m going to give a little intro to my novel, Three Steps to Home. Three Steps to Home is an adaptation of a short story I recently wrote, and I’m excited to work with these characters and storyline more because they all mean a lot to me. First, I’m going to introduce the characters, then I’m going to break down the plot a little bit. Buckle up, this is going to be kind of a long one so bear with me.
C H A R A C T E R S
Aaron:
Aaron is such a sweetheart. He’s the love interest/boyfriend throughout the book, and is referred to as ‘you’ by Jude, the point of view character (not sure I’ll keep that but we’ll see). The details of Aaron’s life before moving to the United States ten months before the start of the story are foggy, but you get the idea that it wasn’t a fun time. In the first chapter, Jude notes Aaron’s ability to say nearly nothing about himself, even when he answers direct questions, which is a detail that sums him up well. He may be closed off at times, but he’ll go to lengths most wouldn’t to help the people he cares about. He likes fixing other people's problems, even if he should be focussing on his own. Aaron is an ESFP-T (entertainer) and a Scorpio, which is to say, he’s kind of chaotic and makes a lot of bad choices, but he tries to make up for them even if his attempts are misguided. Physically, Aarons very tall and lanky, he has wavy blond hair, blue eyes, and big wire rimmed glasses. He loves his black jeans, hoodies, and band tee shirts more than just about anything.
“You had a faint tattoo of a crescent moon on your left forearm and two rings in each ear. Guys from this sleepy town would never even attempt to look like that, to look as if they came from somewhere where people weren’t cardboard cutouts of each other”
Jude:
Jude is the point of view character and is one of my favorite characters I’ve ever written. At the start of the book, he feels very stuck in his life and the small town he lives in, and has a struggling relationship with his religious and homophobic mother, as he is extremely gay. He sees what he wants to see in people, and that usually ends up being just the good aspects of them. Because of this, he tends to get into relationships that are either abusive or neglectful, and he tends to think there’s nothing wrong in those relationships. That being said, he’s a smart guy; he speaks spanish, studies computer science for fun and picks up on some things faster than Sherlock Holmes. Physically, Jude is half Guatemalan and half Irish. He’s shorter and stockier than Aaron, his hair is dark and curly and cut shortish on the sides and a bit longer at the top. He’s got warm brown skin and dark eyes, and he has the tiniest Spanish accent, as he learned English and Spanish simultaneously. Jude is a Pisces and an ISFJ-T (defender).
“Mother said it was college that ruined me; that it exposed me to too many liberals, too many atheists or Agnostics or Bhuddists, that it converted me into something I was never meant to be. The private two-year I went to was the right kind of religious and ten minutes up the road. Everyone there was some breed of Christian and straight and perfect, or at least pretending to be, but I let her believe that my education was the culprit anyway. I was her only child, her only blood, her former pride and joy. If she found out I stopped believing in God the day my dad left, there would be no one to blame but me and him, my life would only get worse.”
P L O T
Three Steps From Home doesn’t really have that strong of a plot, but I will do my best to explain. Spoilers ahead, but I’m not publishing this so you should be alright. The book starts with Aaron and Jude as complete strangers. Aaron works at a coffee shop that Jude hides in every day to avoid his mother. They get to know each other that way, and the book is how their relationship evolves from when Aaron initially starts talking to Jude. As the story goes on, the reader learns of both boys’ mental health issues, as well as Jude’s struggle to balance faith, sexuality, and his relationships with both his mother and Aaron. Aaron and Jude eventually move from a small town in Montana to Seattle, Washington, where both their relationship and mental health issues take turns for the worst and bad things happen.
TSFH is told in a first person directed and past tense, so by the end, it almost feels like Jude’s apology letter to Aaron and a reflection of the guilt he feels about how things happened. The entire book is essentially a summary of what Jude feels he could have done to change what happened in the end (not saying what happens until I get closer to writing it).

Okay, well there’s my first crack at an actual novel introduction. Feel free to ask me questions about this project, as well as my other WIPs. Thanks for reading if you made this far! I hope you have a great day/night :)

Novel Update!!
TW: DRUGS, ABUSE
This is an update for my fifth novel, (first one I'm mentioning on here) Monsters by the Sea. It’s a contemporary novel set in Seaside, Oregon, in 2015ish. The book follows two teens, Hayden and Cecelia (Lee), who enter in a scholarship contest together during their senior year in order to get enough money to leave town for college.
CHARACTERS:
Lee: Lee is kind of a badass, not gonna lie. She spends most of her time drawing or hanging out with her little sister. Her dad spends a lot of time out of the picture, and her mom is a bit off, so she has to do a lot of things for herself. She’s funny and a bit cynical, but ultimately loves her life and the people in it. She’s super loyal, and she definitely starts some things she shouldn’t in an attempt to help her friends, but we forgive her for it.
Hayden: Hayden is so so sweet and deserves nothing but happiness (which of course he does not get). He plays guitar, bass, and ukulele for money when he’s not working one of his two jobs or going to school. Hayden is a big loner and hates talking about himself and his problems, which is something he has to work through during the book. He’s super smart and tends to work hard in school so he’ll have the scholarship to move out of his moms house after he graduates.

Lee and Hayden are introduced, as well as Lee’s mom and little sister. Hayden and Lee meet officially for the first time, although they kind fo know each other already from school. Hayden plays his guitar for Lee, and she gives him a penny. I’m planning to add something else to the chapter because it’s definitely missing a beat or two, (or ten) but I’m fairly happy with the style and the actual writing so far.
“A block or so down, a guy who she vaguely recognized from school sat outside a record shop, strumming his guitar for an audience of zero. He seemed perfectly content, even when the wind carried his voice away and he was without a roaring crowd to egg him on. He wore black jeans and a David Bowie tee shirt over a grey sweatshirt, his dark hair collected neatly under a backwards red hat. His guitar case was open at his feet, and she counted four dollars and thirty-two cents as she passed.”

b a d   h a b i t s
This is our first chapter from my boy Hayden’s point of view. It’s really to highlight what his life is like to show his motivations for the rest of the story. We meet his (abusive) mother and see what he does to manage his life around her issues.
“The wind bit his arms, the back of his neck, his face, as he walked home. He’d made thirty dollars in tips that day, plus the single penny the girl, Lee, had given him. Twenty five of those dollars sat in a pouch necklace tucked into the front of his shirt, five in his backpack where he knew his mother would check. Today, he would tell her that he had spent the money on dinner: a double cheeseburger, fries, a milkshake, there was no receipt. That night, he would not eat at all”
“The five dollars remaining in his bag would be confiscated on arrival. ‘Someone has to pay the bills around here,’ she would say as she slipped her dirty fingers into his backpack, grasping his wallet like a lifeline and extracting what she believed to be the rest of his pay. He knew the five dollars wouldn’t be enough for a pack of camels, her favorite, she’d have to make up the difference with her own money. A small act of rebellion, but an act all the same”
Well, there’s my first novel update! Let me know if y’all want to see more of these, because I definitely had fun making this! Thanks for reading, if you made it this far!
