At Least 44 Table Tennis Players in Rio Are Chinese-Born. Six Play for China
Tumblr media
RIO DE JANEIRO — Ni Xialian helped the Chinese team win a gold medal at the world championships of table tennis in 1983. But even that was not enough to convince her coaches that she could forge a career alongside the best players in her country. So she left.
Ni was a 7-year-old schoolgirl in Shanghai when she first fell in love with the game. Last week, at age 53, she competed in her third Olympics, wearing for a third time the uniform of Luxembourg, the nation she adopted as her home in 1991. In a sport that rewards the skill of subtle anticipation, her unconventional move 25 years ago has proved prescient.
Back then, there was only a trickling migration of players from China to certain countries in Europe. But that movement grew, and today it has produced a full-fledged, far-flung diaspora of athletes on six continents that has reshaped the landscape of the sport.
At the Summer Olympics here, Chinese-born table tennis players represented China, of course. But they were also playing for 21 other countries, out of 56 in the tournament.
Of the 172 table tennis players at the Games, at least 44 were born in China. Six were representing China.

Serghei Tarnovschi: The YOG canoeist making waves for Moldova
Tumblr media
1. Tarnovschi was born in Ukraine in 1997, but has been competing for Moldova since 2014. He has an older brother, Oleg, who also races for Moldova in canoe sprint, and is competing over the shorter distance of 200m at Rio 2016. 2. Serghei began paddling in 2008, at the age of 10, and had a breakthrough year in 2014. After winning a silver medal at the World Junior Championships in Szeged (Hungary), he travelled to Nanjing where he went one better, winning gold in the boys’ C1 head-to-head sprint event. It was Moldova’s first gold medal in any Olympic competition. 3. A year later he made the step up to senior competition, and demonstrated his potential by winning a bronze medal at the 2015 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Milan (Italy) in the men’s C1 1000m – earning qualification for the same event in Rio de Janeiro. He was named Moldovan Athlete of the Year for 2015 by the nation’s Youth and Sports Ministry in recognition of his achievements.

Crowd favourite Katoatau says dance routine carries a serious message
Tumblr media
Katoatau saw the house he built for his parents destroyed in a cyclone several years ago, and he came up with the routine –  first performed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, where he won Kiribati’s first ever major title – in order to raise awareness of the threat climate change poses to his remote Pacific nation. On 16 August, performing for the last time at Rio 2016, Katoatau got more cheers than any other lifter, including a Brazilian, throughout the men's 105kg B Group. He also caused a sensation during the Opening Ceremony where, as Kiribati's flagbearer, he broke into his dance routine. Kiribati, located in the Central Pacific, is suffering extreme coastal erosion of its beaches and even inlying land areas according to its government. Some scientists have predicted that this will have a catastrophic effect on Kiribati's 21 inhabited islands.

Mixed doubles joy for Indonesian pair in badminton
Tumblr media
Roared to the title by a small but vociferous band of Indonesia fans at the Riocentro, the world No3 pairing gave their opponents little chance, producing a commanding performance to win 21-14 21-12. Victory gave Indonesia their maiden triumph in the event and their seventh Olympic badminton title in all, their previous gold having come at Beijing 2008, when Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan claimed the men’s doubles crown.
“I feel speechless. I cannot say anything. I’m overwhelmed,” said an ecstatic Tontowi. “For this medal I would like to thank God, my family, my kids, my parents, the citizens of Indonesia, the coach and everyone who has been supporting us along the way.”
“I feel relieved, proud, happy; I don’t know anymore. It’s just an outstanding feeling,” commented playing partner Natsir. “Although I am experienced, I was very stressed and under pressure in the earlier points. I tried to relax and enjoy the game so we could go on and win it.”
In winning gold to go with the silver she took in the same event at Beijing 2008, Natsir became only her country’s second dual badminton medallist, after Susi Susanti, who won women’s singles gold and bronze at Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 respectively.
For Malaysia, meanwhile, their 52-year wait for an Olympic badminton title goes on, with Goh and Chan’s hopes of ending it vanishing in just 44 minutes. Finding themselves 10-3 down in the opening set before they could settle, Goh and Chan had no answer to Tontowi’s aggressive play and Natsir’s deftness at the net.

Brazil 6 Honduras 0: Neymar scores fastest ever Olympic goal as hosts thrash surprise semi-finalists
Tumblr media
Neymar scored the fastest goal in Olympic history then converted from the penalty spot in stoppage time as Brazil thrashed Honduras 6-0 to reach the gold-medal match at the Maracana. Brazil has never won football gold in the Olympic Games. They will face Germany in the final, after the Europeans beat Nigeria 2-0 in their semi-final in Sao Paulo on Wednesday (17 August) afternoon.
Rio-time updates: follow the action with our daily live blog
Brazilian fans were hoping for a sort of rematch against Germany, whose senior team embarrassed Brazil 7-1 in the semi-finals of the World Cup two years ago.
"Hey Germany, just wait, your turn is coming up," the fans chanted at the Maracana.
Only the gold will be enough, with Brazil playing at home and being considered the main title-favourites in a tournament played mostly with under-23 squads. The Olympic gold medal is the only major trophy the five-time World Cup champions have not won in football.
With Neymar playing well, Brazil were in command from the start in front of the more than 70,000 fans at the Maracana. It didn't take long for the Barcelona player to put Brazil ahead - just 14 seconds.

Twins Finish Marathon Hand in Hand, but Their Country Says They Crossed a Line
Tumblr media
RIO DE JANEIRO — The Olympics are as much about what warms the heart or initiates debate as who wins the medals. But what warms the heart or initiates debate can be a matter of perspective in a sprawling event that brings together more than 200 nations and territories.
There was little division on Tuesday in the Olympic Stadium, when two runners — Abbey D’Agostino of the United States and Nikki Hamblin of New Zealand — offered a helping hand to each other after a collision in the 5,000 meters and then urged each other on to the finish.
“I mean, that girl is the Olympic spirit right there,” Hamblin said afterward, speaking to reporters about D’Agostino.
But on Sunday in the women’s marathon, when the German twins and training partners Anna and Lisa Hahner decided — spontaneously, they insist — to join hands as they crossed the finish line deep in the pack and far from the medals, they quickly drew sharp criticism.
German track and field officials accused them of publicity seeking and treating the Olympic marathon “like a fun run.”
This is not just a German point of view, of course, but it does reflect the range of expectations as athletes navigate the cultural norms that relate to competition and sportsmanship.
The Egyptian judoka Islam El Shehaby, who refused to shake the hand of his Israeli opponent Or Sasson, was following his nation’s standards — one that Olympic officials expressly reject. He was ejected from the Games.
There was no outcry, only amusement, when David Katoatau, an exuberant weight lifter from Kiribati, danced off stage on Monday with the goal of heightening awareness of the threat posed by climate change to his tiny nation in the central Pacific Ocean.
The Hahner twins had no political agenda when they joined hands to end their race, but their move, to their surprise, was still polarizing.
“Victory and medals are not the only goal,” Thomas Kurschilgen, sports director of the German Athletics Federation, said in an email on Tuesday. “Still, every athlete in the Olympic competitions should be motivated to demonstrate his or her best performance and aim for the best possible result.”
That approach, according to Kurschilgen, is what divides elite sport from mass-participation sport and what he thinks the Hahners failed to grasp.

Love is in the air: triple jumper Will Claye makes fourth wedding proposal of Rio 2016
Tumblr media
If Will Claye was in the slightest bit disappointed with the silver medal he won in the triple jump at Rio 2016 on Tuesday (16 August), any such sentiments must have disappeared moments later. The American leapt into the stands to propose to his girlfriend, American hurdler Queen Harrison, who promptly said yes.
Love is clearly in the air at these Olympic Games: Claye and Harrison became the fourth couple to publicly agree to get hitched so far.
Claye and Christian Taylor had just completed another gold and silver sweep in the triple jump for the United States, emulating their feat at London 2012.
Taylor successfully defended his title with a season-leading jump of 17.86m and Claye finished runner-up again with a personal best of 17.76 metres. China's Dong Bin took bronze with 17.58m.

Usain Bolt at Rio 2016: when is the 200m final and can the Jamaican break his world record?
Tumblr media
The fastest man on the planet, the holder of the world records in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay, is attempting to pull off an unprecedented 'triple triple' in Rio: by defending his titles in all of those events that he won at Beijing 2008 and London 2012. If he achieves this feat, he will cement his name as the greatest sprinter in history.
Bolt has repeatedly said he wants to be the first man to dip under 19 seconds for the 200m but his fastest time this year is 19.89sec, set at the London Anniversary Games last month.
Four runners have gone quicker than Bolt over the distance this season. Heading the list is LaShawn Merritt of the USA, who shocked the athletics community with an incredible 19.74 earlier this year at the US Olympic trials in Eugene on 8 July. He has also clocked under 19.80 three times already in 2016.
100m silver medallist Justin Gatlin clocked 19.75 last month. The closest Bolt has come to his 2009 record is the 19.32 four years ago when he won the gold at the London 2012 Olympics Games.

American Taylor soars to second Olympic triple jump gold
Tumblr media
The 26-year-old world champion stamped his authority on the competition with his very first jump, sailing out to 17.86m in the Rio sunshine to set a standard his rivals were unable to match. Team-mate Will Claye leapt 17.76m with his first jump to take silver and reprise the London 2012 one-two, with world indoor champion Dong Bin taking bronze behind the American duo.
Claye, who beat Taylor at the US Olympic trials, pushed hard to overturn the defending champion’s advantage, and nudged the 18-metre line with his third jump, only to be red-flagged. Prowling the track and muttering to himself between jumps, Taylor proved too strong however, also recording two jumps of 17.77, which would also have been enough for gold.
Having been forced by a chronic knee injury to switch his takeoff leg following his London triumph, Taylor was delighted to be back on top of the Olympic podium for the second time in four years: “On the bus I said: ‘Leave it all out there’. I wanted it so much. It came together. The stars aligned. I wanted the world record but it wasn’t to be. I’ll keep pushing for it. It’s been there so long.”

Biles wins record-equalling fourth gold with floor victory
Tumblr media
A day after a wobbly performance on the beam ended the American's hopes of leaving Rio with an outright record haul of five golds for a female gymnast, she was back on form to capture the floor title with 15.966 points.
Despite claiming that her legs felt “rock hard” going into the event, the 19-year-old served up a powerful display of acrobatics and tumbling that nobody else in the final could come close to matching. Aly Raisman completed a one-two for the USA with a score of 15.500, while Great Britain’s Amy Tinkler (14.933) took bronze.
“I'm a little bit relieved because it's been a long journey,” reflected Biles. “I've enjoyed every single moment of it and I know our team has. It's been very long and, competing so many times this week, it kind of got tiring. We just wanted to end on a good note.”

Unprecedented gold! Robson hits French and historic achievement title in boxing
Tumblr media
Robson Conceição had no big dreams. Invoked, I wanted to be like his uncle, famous for fighting in the street. He turned the "Terror" of the humble neighborhood where he was born in Salvador. By discovering boxing, exchanged punches in the streets by the ring and saw that he could dream. To reach them, grated. Was marketer, sold popsicles on the beach, was bricklayer's assistant ... At the insistence and talent, became Olympic champion. With the Pavilion 6 Riocentro pulsing beat Frenchman Sofiane Oumiha by unanimous decision, with 3-0 (30-27, 29-28 and 29-28) late on Tuesday. Put his name in the history of Brazilian boxing to win the first gold medal of the sport in the Games. Today, it is the pride of Boa Vista. Pride Salvador. Pride of Bahia. Pride Brazil.

Brazil's Thiago Braz da Silva elevated to national hero status after pole vault gold
Tumblr media
By midnight, the Olympic Stadium can’t have been a quarter-full. But in years to come, as this story grows in the telling, we’ll discover that the crowd must have been much larger than it seemed because so many Brazilians say that they were there. There was only one competition going on. The track finals were over and for an hour no one had anything to watch but the men’s pole vault, which had begun as a low comedy and finished, over three hours later, in high drama.
At the end of it, Thiago Braz da Silva, a 22-year-old Paulista, had won Brazil’s first men’s gold medal in athletics not just at these Olympics, but any Olympics since 1984. The celebrations of the few thousand who had stayed were as loud as any that will sound around Rio this week. They were still chanting his name in the stands long after he was gone.
To win it, Da Silva had to vault 6.03m, 10cm more than his personal best, and 6cm more than the Olympic record set at London 2012 by the only other man still in the competition at that point, France’s Renaud Lavillenie. The air is rare up where Lavillenie lives, six metres and more above the ground, and a country mile ahead of his competitors. No one has ever vaulted higher than he did in 2014, when he cleared 6.16m.
Here, he was trying to become the second man in history to win two Olympic titles, after the “vaulting vicar” Bob Richards in 1952 and ‘56. He looked bound to do it, too. After he made his third vault, at 5.93m, every one of the five men left in the field needed to equal or beat their personal best to stay in with him.
Da Silva was the only one to do it, on his second attempt. When he landed, Lavillenie swallowed, set himself to go again. The bar moved up to 5.98m, a height Lavillenie has cleared many times, but well beyond anything Da Silva had ever been near achieving. Which made what happened next all the more extraordinary.
Da Silva raised the stakes on Lavillenie by choosing to sit out that height and take a shot, instead, at 6.03m. You sensed, right then, that channels were being changed across the country. All of sudden this pole vault contest was showing in houses and bars across Brazil, and had the attention of everybody who could see a TV or hear a radio.
Da Silva made it at his second attempt, the best vault of his young life. Lavillenie had already failed his first two. So he had one shot left. As he stood there at the end of the runway, the crowd began to boo. Their wild excitement drove them to it. Until that point they had been cheering everything.

Rio 2016: the sport, the drama, the marriage proposals
Tumblr media
From golf to rugby sevens, and even possibly jousting, the list of Olympic sports gets longer every four years. But this year it seems an unlikely 43rd spectator sport has snuck its way on to the roster: marriage proposals.
In the first 10 days of this year’s Rio Games, three athletes have found their partners getting down on bended knee – or in one case holding up the crucial question on a sign – in front of a live audience of thousands and with the news cameras of the world capturing the moment.
The competitors themselves have also got in on the act. Moments after winning a silver medal in triple jump, the American Will Claye bounded into the stands, dropped to a knee and proposed to his longtime girlfriend, hurdler Queen Harrison. She said yes.

Rio Olympics 2016: GB's Laura Trott defends omnium title to win historic fourth gold
Tumblr media
The world champion, 24, moves ahead of Charlotte Dujardin, who won her third Olympic gold with victory in the individual dressage.
"I can't believe it. I didn't expect that at all," said a tearful Trott, who matched her team pursuit and omnium victories from London 2012 in Rio.
She scored 230 points to win the title by 24 from American Sarah Hammer.
Trott finished second in the opening scratch race of the omnium and won the individual pursuit and elimination race to end Monday's opening day with an eight-point lead over Belgium's Jolien D'hoore, with Hammer in third.
She was second in the time trial to extend her advantage over D'hoore to 12 points and then won the flying lap to double her lead heading into the 100-lap points race.
Trott, from Cheshunt, concluded the six-discipline event with a tactically astute ride, closing down attacks from her rivals and picking up points in the 10 intermediate sprints.
"I couldn't have done it without everyone, especially Paul Manning my coach. He puts up with me on a daily basis and I am over the moon," added Trott, who also won her second world omnium title earlier in the year.
Trott celebrated her latest Olympic gold by cheering on fiance Jason Kenny as he equalled Sir Chris Hoy's British record of six Olympic gold medals by winning a dramatic keirin.

End of dream: Brazil lost on penalties to Sweden and will play for bronze
Tumblr media
Just the dream of Olympic gold for the Brazilian national women's football. After goalless draw in normal time and in overtime defeat to Sweden came just as the victory over Australia although with different numbers: on penalties by 4-3 (in the quarterfinals, won 7-6). The Brazil pressed all the time, finished more attacked, but ran a good boom mounted by the Olympic bichampion technical Pia Sundhage and was not able to win the game. In the penalties, shone the star of the Swedish goalkeeper Lindahl, who took the charges andressinha and Cristiane. Barbara heroine against Australia also defended a charge, but it did not. The vacancy for the decision is of Swedish.

It’s a Bird! No, It’s a Crocodile! Synchronized Swimming Themes Can Be Mystifying
Tumblr media
RIO DE JANEIRO — Down in the pool, the Australian synchronized swimming duo was performing a three-minute whistle-stop tour of the animals of the outback — kookaburras, emus, centipedes — to music from “Crocodile Dundee.” In the stands, the American mother-daughter duo of Ruth and Emily Thunstrum was trying to figure out what, exactly, was going on.
You do not have to be from someplace other than Australia to be mystified by synchronized swimming, a sport that lies in the corner of the Twilight Zone where Kabuki opera meets advanced underwater survival. It may look as if the athletes are simply gesticulating emphatically, flinging themselves around in improbable aquatic configurations, and executing shockingly complex leg movements while upside down and not breathing. But that’s not the half of it.
Each synchro routine also has an elaborate theme, and each theme must be conveyed with grace, precision and dramatically relevant facial gestures, as well as moves like the catalina rotation (rotate your body while holding your leg, ballet-style, in the air) and the vertical descent (descend, straight upside down, until your toes are submerged). The athletes also have to do each move at the same time and make it seem easy, fun and not hard at all, even when they are heaving, hypoxic and about to pass out.
Judged for their artistic as well as athletic skills, synchro swimmers put considerable effort into their themes and choreography. The stories can celebrate a nation’s history and culture; evoke classic tales, ballets, songs and myths; mimic natural phenomena or abstract principles; and, in the case of “Fury,” the American duet’s free routine theme in Rio, convey a mood itself.
Sometimes the themes are obvious and careworn: Every competition seems to include at least one “Swan Lake” (hello, Austria). They can also be hideously ill conceived.
In 1996, for instance, the French synchro team picked an unusual subject for the Olympics: the Holocaust. The routine began with the athletes goose-stepping on the deck like Nazis and ended with them being rounded up and sent to the (figurative) gas chamber in the pool. After an international outcry, the team switched to a different topic, although its trainer, Odile Petit, tried to argue that the routine was no more offensive than the one “depicting torture in Chile” performed by the national ice-dancing team.
