Printed on front: "Grand Canal, Belle Isle, Detroit, Mich." Printed on back: "Grand Canal, Belle Isle. Canoeing is the leading sport at Belle Isle, Detroit's largest play-ground. Band concerts are given at the city's expense during the summer afternoons and evenings and on such occasions the canoeists are present in great numbers." Handwritten on back: "7/21. Rec'd your letter. Also have had one from Bessie. I will meet you & Uncle Chas. Sunday. Are you coming ... or Lake Shore & what time will you leave Saline. Would like to know so there will be no mistake. Drop me a line. J.W.S." Card is postmarked July 21, 1910.

With our Many Lakes and Rivers, it's Perfect to Take a Canoe Out...
Even though technically this is a Canadian holiday we here in the United States celebrate, National Canoe Day. Canoeing is both a sport and recreation, it is a nice relaxing way to enjoy the environment surrounding us. Wherever water is, there will be canoeing whether on the lake, rivers, or close to the ocean shores. Why not take the time with thousands to visit their favorite waterways, explore lakes and/or rivers, participate in competitive aquatic events, have a fun family day, or have a group of friends exploring? Canoeing is an activity that anyone from different age groups or fitness levels, can easily learn and it is a low-impact exercise and good healthy exercise.
Enjoy, National Canoe Day!!

Bad weather: two tourists saved in Cagliari by the Coast Guard
Bad weather: two tourists saved in Cagliari by the Coast Guard
(ANSA) – CAGLIARI, 12 AUGUST – With the sudden worsening of marine weather conditions, two canoeists in difficulty in the waters of the Poetto of Cagliari were saved last night by the Coast Guard. The alarm went off at 5 pm when the owner of a bathhouse contacted the operations room, claiming that he had rented canoes to two German tourists for an hour, but that the hikers had not yet returned.…

14-year-old John Hron had no time for bullies or racists. The teenager from Sweden went to school with several people that would fall into those categories. He was a keen canoeist and enjoyed playing the guitar.
On the afternoon of the 17th of August, 1995, John and his friend, Christian, were camping by Ingetorpssjon Lake near Kode, Sweden. Shortly after they set up camp, four neo-nazis approached their tent. Ranging from 15-years-old to 18-years-old, John recognised one of them. It was Mikael Fjalljholm, a bully in his school. John and Mikael had bashed heads beforehand. John was horrified by his racist and cruel behaviour and was known to stand up to him when pushed. But now, Mikael had three friends with him, Daniel Hanson, John Billing and BM, as he was only referred to in the media.
They approached the tent and started to punch John. They told him to say that he “loves nazism” to which he refused and received another beating. They kicked and punched him and smashed beer bottles over his head. The sadistic group would beat him for hours and every now and then, would pretend to be apologetic and offer him a drink before starting the attack again. It was a cat and mouse type attack. They burnt him in the fire and burnt his neck with a piece of burning wood.
At some point during the attack, John managed to break free and jump into the lake. However, the group started hollering that they would kill Christian if he did not return. Barely clinging to life, he swam back and the torture continued. When John fell unconscious, they threw him into the lake where he drowned. Christian hitched a ride back home and called police and named John’s killers. When his body was retrieved, it was said that his injuries matched those to somebody who had been hit by a train.
If the grim murder of John wasn’t shocking enough, his killers all received lenient sentences. Daniel was released after just six years while Mikael was sentenced to five years in institutional youth care. The other two received just a few months in prison. John posthumously received the inaugural Stig Dagerman Prize for free speech and world peace.

1960’s British SBS (Special Boat Squadron) Ventile “Canoeist Smock”. These highly unusual Ventile smocks were made for a very short period of time during the 1960’s in seemingly near nonexistent numbers for a very small and specialized British Special Forces unit. The Special Boat Service is an incredibly elite and highly secretive unit within the British Royal Navy that has an unbelievable history of service throughout WW2 all the way up until present day where they are largely responsible for maritime counter-terrorism. They are essentially the UK’s answer to the US Navy SEALs and are mostly made up of Royal Navy Commandos. The smock is about a niche as they come, being made specifically for Canoe/ Kayak operations. It features a number of very unique pockets including the huge back pocket which could be accessed by the person sitting behind the wearer, the huge iconic angled map pocket on the chest, as well as a tiny pocket on the hood itself, possibly for a compass. All pockets feature small eyelets at the bottom for water drainage. Like many of the fine British Military Ventile smocks of the 50’s/ 60’s this example was made by Belstaff as can be determined by the almost unreadably faded BMC stamp shown in slide 4, next to the Broad Arrow.
