Finally I finished the skin texture and rigging of 'The average Siderian Demo v2'. Blender is a bit suboptimal regarding texture painting but I'm happy with how the skin and mouth details came out.

There are still some imperfections but I will leave that to v3. I'm quite pleased with the result of my 2nd 3D model ever.

The next step is giving him fur.

The end of an Era

Yesterday morning, on the 27th of March 2024 my dear cat Neo passed away at an age of almost 17 years. He was the last of our Oriental cats and his passing marks the end of an era for me. Our first Oriental Longhair was Jayto, born November 27th 2003 who later got company of Nintu, a black Oriental Shorthair born August 26th 2006. Sadly, Jayto got sick and died at an age of only 3 years old, not long after Nintu came. Nintu needed another Oriental cat friend because our ‘regular’ cat Joey, who had been with us since early 1995, was not interested in Oriental cat style stickiness. And so Neo came;  a black Oriental Longhair born on May 9th 2007. Neo and Nintu have been best buddies for over 13 years. They played together, slept together and went on adventures together- including our family holidays. Their personalities were polar opposites and that made them such a good match.

When Nintu died on May 7th 2020 at an age of almost 14, Neo missed his buddy so much that we adopted Yuka, a red ‘regular’ cat. He gave Neo some proper distraction with his naughtiness - hence his nickname “Geboefte” , which means criminal in Dutch.

Neo was one of the loveliest, social and most easy going cats whom I’ve known. He was timid and careful but also the most talkative and intimate. Cuddles were almost always welcome and most led to roll and belly-rub session. He had the peculiar habit to do ‘stairs sticky’ as we called it: he stood on the first or 2nd floor while you had to stand a few steps lower on the stairs with your face was at his level and cuddle him.

We often gently joked about his funny look and mannerisms. He was exceptionally small (3.5 kg at max) for a tomcat, always had a bony butt, a pronounced sternum bone that stuck out and a lean but well filled ‘sack of organs’ along with a slightly kinked tail tip. Despite his small size, his paws were proportionally huge, which was not a desired trait for the breed - but I didn’t care; I love big paws. He had a very typical quiet, calm and elegant gait with small steps and an elevated head. Quite the opposite of Nintu’s big steps  and -always-in-a-rush- pace. Neo and the other Oriental cats have left us so many precious memories. These will always remain. 

Neo was also the last Feline with whom I had an intimate bond. Since I moved out of my parents’ house in 2012. I was not physically living with him anymore but I came back regularly and Neo was always there to be ‘sticky’ again. Until now. The next time I’m going back, he won’t be there anymore.

But his spirit stays

I'm still going to play around with some facial expressions and maybe a small yawning / slow-blink animation but I first have to improve the skin texture. The close up doesn't look realistic just yet.

I've made a beginning with giving him some skin texture and I've made a walk cycle again, to refresh some basic animation.

I've also spent quite some time learning how to make some of his muscles and stuff jiggle. Also if you take a close look at his fingers and toes, you see them jiggle too as the paw lands on the ground. I will show this from another angle in another render.

The last few months (maybe more than just a few), I've spent on retopologizing the sculpture (see https://www.tumblr.com/reignofsiderians/738040995179085824/wip-of-my-new-3d-project-statistical-average?source=share ) and then rigging.

The previous model had only a basic rig while this model has a much more advanced rig with finger and claw controllers. I've also made a custom detailed face rig, in addition to some shapekeys. I also managed to get the flank-skin and chest to deform well in the more extreme positions.

WIP of my new 3D project: 'statistical average Siderian (Aka µ) v2.' I've made a v1 as well - a simple model with a simple colour, a basic background and some basic walk cycles. My ultimate goal is to learn character modelling and animation in Blender through making 3 versions of 'the statistical average Siderian', each being more complicated than the precursor.

This is the sculpture of version 2 in which I've sculpted the teeth, claws, ears, tongue and eyes in much more detail than in the previous model.

I've missed these Siderian (Northern horse-sized cats) life snapshots and I've missed Vivanna...so I thought...why not give her a special piece. Vivanna comes across as shy, particularly as an adult - but that's not really what she is. She was quite an extroverted and bold cub and when she's hunting, her brave and determined nature really shows.

That's also one of the things that attracted her mate Stian so much; she took down prey that is usually only hunted by male Siderians. I get the impression that there is quite a lot to her that I have yet to discover. Maybe she will reveal more eventually

The pose and an idea of the background is based on a photo of a lioness but I've changed the background into something snowy, so this could be in spring when the top layer of the lakes are beginning to melt, but there is still quite some snow.
