Quick update on my stick bug, Cheza.

I was really worried about her earlier tonight because she was acting strange, dragging herself around, being sort of lethargic…

Turns out I was just a dingus and forgot they molt. Couple hours later I checked and she’d hung up her gross limp shirt on her stick like a polite little phasmid.

Guess it’s time for that bigger enclosure.

Long overdue POD UPDATE!

I got TWO new species of isopods from Repticon- clowns and Porcellio Sevilla, which I’ve dubbed Hofflings for their resemblance to Hoffmanseggi but smaller size and less fight-me-bro demeanor.

I saw so many cool creatures, held a four year old rat, and came home with an additional impulse purchase… Pardon the clutter, but this is Cheza.

(Tumblr is absolutely shitting the bed with me trying to add photos so I hope the right ones are even in here lol).

I was enchanted the moment I saw her. She was $10, she likes blackberry leaves and lettuce and mostly pretends to be a stick all day. I love her very much. <3

I’ve also added two predators to my little family. One is, well, a tiny praying mantis (as of yet nameless). The other is a rosy wolf snail named Snackbeard (snail Blackbeard), which I did not know only eats other snails when I acquired him. It’s been an adventure feeding both of them! A lot of foraging, a lot of standing under my porch light at night dodging big beetles and palmetto bugs trying to catch little flies with my big clumsy human hands. I don’t like to watch when they eat, but as long as I know they are eating, that’s all I need.

My little family’s gotten slightly bigger this summer, but I love them all and look forward to sharing more stories as they occur.

Haven’t had a pod update in a bit. Just checked in on everyone and here’s what’s up:

Woodlice are mad overdue for an upgrade/update. I know there’s a way to sift babies out from frass and regular dirt but I do not know what it is. They’ve always approached life slowly as long as I’ve known them, and that includes reproduction but I do have some tiiiny babies presently, hence the dirt dilemma.

Powders and the woodlice that live with them are THRIVING. They’re always out roaming around, sniffin stuff, got places to BE.

Dairy Cow numbers seem down? Haven’t had any major die-offs, just bigger adults here and there. But all they do is fuck and eat and there’s about a million babies in there so for now I’ll say they’re likely fine.

Giant Canyons are MANY. They all hide during the day so their tub looks empty, but at night it’s like a rave in there. They still beg at the corner for snacks when I sit down to say hi.

Tonight I saw Snede Snonnet (the snail) and Gary (the slug) BOTH out exploring in their little jar. I fed Snede a shrimp pellet by hand and once he figured out it was edible he went to town. I couldn’t reach Gary to offer him one as well, so I dropped a second bearish to him and hoped for the best.

My friend gave me two dubia roaches a while back, who remain yet unnamed, and I was worried they were dead because they’re so very skittish. Contrary to this, they’ve grown! They’re the length of a penny now. Even at night they prefer to stay hidden, but I DID catch one eating a fish flake. They really don’t seem so different from pods- in fact, I’d house them with the powders or something if I didn’t worry they’d be nibbled on for the crimes of existing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I still have two small millipedes left alive from my larp trip in January. They have grown juuust a little.

And I think that’s it. Everything’s chill rn- going to repticon in Raleigh the weekend of the 26th to try and find a couple more snails and I’m hoping some zebra pods or scabers. A small millipede or two is on the table also.

Haven’t spoken much about the pods lately. They’re vibing, I’m vibing. Everybody’s doing okay, just a couple little things here and there.

Tw for animal death:

I had to euthanize Hank and one other pod tonight because Hank had lost both of his antennae and has been disoriented and stressed since then, and tonight he was really struggling to move at all. The other cow was in a similar position, but he still had antennae. They went into the freezer and across the rainbow bridge- it was just too hard to watch them suffer any longer.

I’m finding that it’s kind of a death sentence for pods to lose their sniffers. I don’t know if they can still smell a little without them? I’ve never had one regrow an antennae if they’ve lost both. They’re just so little and fragile and I just want to keep them safe…

So I make larp/therian masks…

It does require a little suspension of disbelief, but I find that they give me a lot of canid euphoria.

Maybe I’ll make a couple to sell someday soon. Life has been extremely busy with a new day job, but the more I work on this design the more I want to share it. It shouldn’t be hard to modify into other animals, either. One of my canid patterns has ears already attached, and they kind of cover your own so that’s pretty neat.

These are leather but it’s not hard at all to make them from foam if that bothers anyone.

POD NEWS POD NEWS, WE HAVE NEW SOUPLINGS THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

I just love when they get deposited in the dirt like that, it’s like a little sleepover until they feel safe to come out. The millipedes were also out (different jar) and check out this drama queen and pod stack.

I fed them dead goldfish (DOA from the pet store) a few days ago and while it did take them a little while to figure it out, they LOVED it. The only trouble was getting through the scales, but they’re always jazzed for stinky snacks.

I’ve got an art show coming up in the fall and I’ve told myself I’m not allowed to start any more big projects until commissions are DONE but how fuckjng funny would it be if I made another long furby and entered that? Just a bunch of very skilled, traditional artisans and then there’s my trash ass long furby propped up like the corpse of a long dead monarch.

Skeller is getting a new cane for larp so I don’t break his normal one. It’s quite thin and fragile and honestly a good misstep could shatter it. Finally found a replacement I like, even if it isn’t as uniquely shaped as the old one. Spent an hour or so today wood burning demon speech into it. Even if it isn’t evil, per se, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have an… interesting background. All I have to do now is cut it to length and paint it (I hate that line pattern, otherwise I would just stain it).

It kind of looks like it Excalibur from Soul Eater and a faucet had a baby. Its name is Grier.

Another successful birthday. I used to have a panic attack every year, so anything better than that is a nice change.

It’s hard to try to love myself even enough to feel like my being alive should be acknowledged in any way, but I’ve grown so much in the past two years… Idk, that part feels pretty special.

I used my birthday boy powers to make my partner watch Master and Commander with me and it was hoo boy, harder to watch than I remember but man was it fun.

Progress is being made on my claws! I’m ALMOST done and then I get to PAINT THEM.

I’m thinking a nice metallic blue with stripes of a different color on the back edge of each segment.

I know I don’t post as much art and videos as I used to (time, health, the usual), but I AM still creating behind the scenes, doing commission work where I can, and I still do cosplay and larp.

My birthday is coming up on April 5th and I have an Amazon wishlist if you’d like to take a peek at it. Some of it will be FOR work (ghost tour guide and haunt actor), but some is just for the costuming I do on my own time. You don’t need to get me anything, I’m just glad to have done another revolution around the sun with at least some of my dignity in-tact.

Met a new friend on Wednesday and long story short he gave me a couple of dubia roaches that I’m hoping will grow and breed and honestly I’m so excited. Y’all they just look like big pods when they’re fully grown.
