What a sad, horrid stupid piece, the TCJ thing on "Ronin". It even undoes its own argument.
None of the many myriad borrowings of which Ronin is composed, Gƍseki Kojima or otherwise, are fully digested. It’s all a jumble because it’s all fresh: steaming entrails strewn across the counter.
I guess that is the line I can take from it. So bad, Kim Thompson knew, and so on.
steaming entrails
That’s the point. Don't you even get that? You might not like it. It might be unpalatable. Not sure I want steaming entrails most of the time. But it is “a something.” And there are not a lot of “somethings” out there. (Just look at the Romita Jr shit in the same article. Awful pap. Not even a hint of a “something.”)
“Ronin” is amazing. It might not be good. Who the fuck cares?! It's amazing.
(and "samurai Jack" is maybe really good, pretty and fun and whatever, but "Ronin" is just insane)

My life has been an adventure, but, weird, and dumb and not very fun or impressive. Like going into Mordor, but staying in the parking lot the whole time.
Technically an adventure, but

It has become standard to describe A.I. as a tool. I argue that this framing is incorrect. It does not aid in the completion of a task. It completes the task for you. A.I. is a service. You cede control and decisions to an A.I. in the way you might to an independent contractor hired to do a job that you do not want to or are unable to do.
A good piece on AI.

"Geteven" (or "Road to Revenge" or "Champagne and Bullets") was truly... something. I mean I figured it would be. But... not prepared really. Utterly insane, very gross and funny. And the songs, oh god the songs!!

I was reading the Schwarzenegger book this morning, and it's a cute self-help book. Not bad advice, I think. Have a clear vision, refocus the negative etc. And it's kinda funny.
Just now I was reading Perloff on Wittgenstein, and Wittgenstein was also Austrian of course, as was she, so 3 Austrians today. And I relate more easily to Wittgenstein and Perloff, and the way the talk about language. And how strange everything is. I should try to get these 3 into some sort of conjunction.
Cause the way my brain works, not sure I can "do" much of what Schwarzenegger suggests. I might want to, but, it's hard. But the stars apparently tell me (eclipse, full moon, etc.) I need to change, and I need to believe (which is so fkn hard) these days. Now. And, I mean, he's a huge star too, so it make sense. I should try. I really do need to change.

The entire 3-minute city ambiance scene from Ghost in the Shell (1995) is already one of the best moments in all of cinema imo, but I NEED to talk about my absolute favorite part from it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That brief moment when Major Kusanagi and a stranger with her exact same body model catch a glance at one another. How quickly the initial curiosity of seeing the doppelgÀnger turns into a feeling of unease as the boat carries her away.
She will never meet this stranger. She'll never know anything about her other than the simple reminder that every piece of her cybernetic body is not unique to her. There is no part of her other than her brain and all its memories that she has any true ownership of, and even that isn't immune to being hacked and potentially erased by outside forces. Despite being a part of a bustling city, all she can do is reflect on how utterly isolated she feels as a living being.
How can she possibly define her humanity when she herself is confined in the form of what is essentially a highly modified weapon? How can she relate to others when she has more in common with the mannequins on display in a shopping mall than with the any of the people walking the streets?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of this inner turmoil at one’s own existence conveyed without a SINGLE word of dialogue spoken. Now that's the power of cinema if I've ever seen it!

I don’t know what I think about a topic until I try to express myself → I wish then to express as creatively and openly as possible (i.e. some Art thing) → This is a lot of work, so I rather not even have an opinion about anything that isn’t very important.

"In one paper, Bostrom proposed the concept of a universally worn “freedom tag” that would constantly surveil individuals using AI and relate any suspicious activity to a police force that could arrest them for threatening humanity."

Really great news! They closed the stupid nazi Future of Humanity Institute at Oxford, and the lead guy quit.
"The closure of Bostrom’s center is a further blow to the effective altruism and longtermism movements that the philosopher has spent decades championing, which in recent years have become mired in scandals related to racism, sexual harassment and financial fraud. Bostrom himself issued an apology last year after a decades-old email surfaced in which he claimed “Blacks are more stupid than whites” and used the N-word."
