Johto Beta Pokedex #42-50

Ok here comes more #Johto #betapokemon #pokedex cuteness!

You may be thinking, where are the beta #babypokemon for #vulpix #meowth and #ponyta? Well last year there was #pokemongen1 #pokemonleaks and it turns out those babies were planned for #kanto. These babies are all in the #johtoregion though. I loved reimagining the #paras and #grimer babies again. I hadn’t realized last time that para has a little claw, instead of what I thought was an arm. Of course the #growlithe and #doduo babies were fun too!

#natu had a mid evolution who actually only has one wing in its back sprite, which fits its future sight theme. Lastly #xatu had a beta sprite that I made into another midnight form here but… I was so close to making it into a mega xatu, as it has stark differences as well as being white instead of green. It was so hard to decide what to do with the variants of #pokemongoldandsilver’s baby #pokemon. In the end I went with #regionalformpokemon. It made the most sense and leaves it open for anyone to make new #fakemon for their unknown evolutions.

How about that chonk #lanturn though!? I love it, but Lanturn is another one of my favorite #johto mons so I still prefer the one we got! So here’s my thought if we end up getting another #letsgo #pikachu #eevee game... how about a “let’s go johto” with all these cut #betapokemon added back into the game 😜😜😜. Next up are mostly all new entries in the #johto beta #pokedex

All I’ve gotta say is I put my heart and soul into these cats and I’m really happy with how they came out. I don’t know why everyone thinks the thing on Bellboyant’s head is a moon when it’s clearly another bell🔔. Different interpretations are fun though. Also did you know that apparently this line was meant to be a female #counterpart to the #meowth line?! I took some other creative liberties here as well. Turning what was maybe a snowball (circle) with a face and making it look more like snow with a little root tail. I loved the #nidoking #nidoqueen gender #branchedevolution idea as well here. For me the male still has a body made of ice while the female is a proper tree with icy hair. She reminded me a lot of #jynx

Lastly the #kiwibird mon, some say it has spots, others say holes. I went with the latter and made it a normal/ghost mostly because kiwis can’t fly and it looks disturbed. #crobat is naturally the next in the dex to give you a reference for where we are at! Time for regional bugs with new split evolutions! The #betapokemon #pokedex must go on! Swipe left for more!

I know that both of these “split” or “branched” evolutions were actually the beta versions of #ledian and #ariados respectfully but in my opinion they were just too different to make them into a #regionalform. I took creative liberties as always 😉 as I thought it would be cool for the #splitevolution of #ledyba to be an electric bug!

The #kanto ledyba here was actually based off of promotional art from before #pokemongoldandsilver came out. Ledyba already has a gender variant so I incorporated that into its new version here. These gender variants are simply a color change much like #hippowdon.

There were many variations of the #branchedevolution of #spinarak so I also gave it a midnight form, as well as art to show that the face on its abdomen has different expressions. Lastly, you may find it strange but as a #pokemon, ledian is one of my favorite Pokémon, I just love him!

Spoiler: The familiar face is beta #Noctowl which I’ve already actually drawn and posted here but I wanted to do another take on it and I honestly like this version even more!

In #pokemongoldandsilver they introduced the day and night system so I thought I would create a counterpart form to my previous “sunlight form”. So “midnight form” was born- which activates when the move “moonlight” is used in battle (which was a move that was also introduced in #pokemongen2). This post is a bit smaller because I want to pick and choose in a manner to prioritize as many beta designs as possible. Still I also have various kantonian forms. Beta #furret is pink so I gave it and #kanto #sentret the #fairytype and look.

Next in the #betapokemon dex are the #OG starters you know and love, but with some different forms! Swipe left to see more!

Incorporating certain designs is challenging- Luckily regional forms are a thing now 😁. Since these are the #beta versions of #Johto #Pokemon, I decided that this is what they would have looked like in the games before #pokemongoldandsilver so #kantonian #regionalform Pokemon are here! I also came up with a new effect that the move “Sunny Day” will have when used by certain Pokémon (more to come). Lastly, in the case of #chikorita and #quilava here, the changes are too small for another form but to different to ignore. So gender variant Pokemon will also be featured a lot in this dex. For example the female quilava here has round ears, black fur on its arms and would have totally red eyes if this was colored.

I’ve never really considered myself a beta pokemon fan artist but here we are again 🤣. It’s beta dex time!!! Would you have liked these starters?! Long intro below:

About a month ago the #spaceworld1999 demo & another (Korean) #pokemongoldandsilver beta leaked. Unfortunately, everyone started deleting posts related to these leaks due to Nintendo ninjas going after people. This got me thinking- there’s still a way to see them! We’ve gotten so many #lostpokemon between gen’s 1 &2 and I for one would love to see art for ALL of them as if they were released in their respective gens. So this is the 1st image in my new project that is a reimagining of sorts, of cut #Pokémon integrated into the official dex. I’m starting with #pokemongeneration2 cause that’s where the bulk of the #pokemonbeta mons are.

The plan started as small sketches turned pen & ink but it’s been evolving (pun always intended), as I hope to compile them, color them, and present a full dex!

My 1 disclaimer is that this is how I have personally interpreted them- while staying as close to the source material as possible.And I’m doing my best to get every form and #unreleasedpokemon in- while being as logical and practical as possible. So you may not totally agree with what I come up with but at the very least every mon will be represented! I will share my thought process in each post.

Up 1st are the Gen 2 beta #starterpokemon .To be brief, you’ve probably seen most of them before. Note worthy changes are to the grass line being a mix of a beta sunkern, a new closed plant mon and a repurposed beta Bayleef who ended up having ties to surkern in the recent #pokemonleaks .I just think they fit well together. I also mixed multiple similar sprites and old concept art together for #honoguma and volbear. Lastly, the Cruz line is 1 of my absolute favorite cut bets lines. I wish so badly that they were real.

When I saw that #Flapple and #Appletun had the same #gigantamax form I was dissatisfied and disappointed. It always looked more like an #applin gmax to me. So I decided to redesign them!

I wanted to keep the same concept #gamefreak had when making them though. So here is #gigantamaxappletun I’m sure you can spot the differences. Ultimately, I think Appletun fit it’s original gmax more then Flapple did, so the changes here aren’t huge. I also made some reference art for when it’s eyes are up or down.

Touched up the newest beta Kingdra sprite in the latest leak to have the same colors as regular Kingdra. I get why they didn’t use this design since it’s too close to Seadra, but it’s still tragic. This updated sprite is especially beautiful. Feel free to use, no credit needed, since I’d rather have the leaks spread as far and wide as possible anyway.

Girafarig and Wobbuffet : long lost brothers

I made a chart to summarize the interesting case of the Girafarig line and Wobbuffet through time. In the Spaceworld Gold demo from ‘97, “Twinz” was an embryo-like Pokémon that evolved into a full double-headed Girafarig. Many people theorized back then that Twinz might have been used as a base for Wobbuffet rather than being entirely scrapped, and this theory finds confirmation in the ‘99 Beta that got recently leaked.

Gold ‘99 features a “Twinz” Pokémon sharing Wobbuffet’s final Pokédex number (202, the slot before Girafarig). Its backsprite is, however, much more similar to a baby Girafarig than Wobbuffet. This has to mean that after scrapping ‘97 Twinz’s design, it was reworked as a more fitting baby form for final Girafarig. Nonetheless, the ‘99 build already got rid of all the baby Pokémon we saw in the Spaceworld beta, and the lack of a front sprite for baby Girafarig is proof of the fact that they were in the process of scrapping it, too.

The weird looking front sprite for Twinz in the ‘99 build is most likely a placeholder that was drawn as a reminder that it needed to be reworked into a new Pokémon unrelated to Girafarig. That Pokemon is Wobbuffet, whose description in the ‘99 Pokedex already matches its finalized concept (it says it hates light, stays in dark places and never attacks first, preferring to deliver back the damage 3x worse - basically Wobbuffet’s signature move).

So this is the last #betapokemon that I made for now in this series. One day I hope to do more. Especially the other two #legendarybeasts in this #legendarytrio .I would still love if they they use these designs as #primalreversion of these beasts. This guy stuck out to me the most though as it’s so different from the #raikou we got. I love things from both versions to be honest but I think I’d still prefer #betaraikou or as some call it #rai or #goku or #supersayian doggo. 🤣 It’s design had to have had some #dragonball inspiration.You may also notice something different about this piece in the series. I did it with just normal #coloredpencil .You may even like the last of these images more then the digitally touched up final version. I tried to keep it as close to the original sprite as possible, also still trying to capture that #gen1 #watercolor style. I tried about 10 different styles on the eye- looking at all the different types of #Pokémon eyes. I like the menace of what I finally decided on. Once I digitized it, I realized I missed the glowing yellow #lineart highlights. As I was fixing this I decided I wanted to give it similar claws to what the final raikou has and I really like how that came out! Keeping it a mix of feline and canine. I also made it a little more spikey from all the electricity. I hope you like it! As always feel free to like and share! Thank you 😊

This little one gave me SO much trouble. I guess that’s what foxes do 😂. If you didn’t know #Ninetales is one of my absolute favorite #Pokémon and once I saw the #spaceworld1997 demo leak I knew this was my favorite mon that got cut. I’ve never loved #vulpix and I wish with all my heart that #mikon or #trifox or #babyvulpix hadn’t gotten #scrapped

So what had happened with this piece was... it basically became my last attempt at #watercolorpencils .I loved the sketch of this that I did and then when I went to put the water to the color... well as you can see the last image here was the result. So I used a picture of it I had taken and redid it all on #procreate .Then finding a good #watercolor brush and learning how to use it was another challenge.

In the end, I love how it came out! I wanted it to almost be ghost-like and I imagine that it doesn’t have any hind legs but just the 3 tails. In the 3 tails I wanted to you to see the 3 trails of fire underneath. My least favorite thing about the Ninetales line is the separation of its hair from its head so I only made a color separation. I wanted it to be a little more orange then vulpix but still keep some brown. Then I spontaneously added a little smoke on the tips of its hair for a little more character!

Baby Grimer (Betobebi)

This little guy was the easiest to accomplish. It always looked like a #ditto to me but no- It’s a baby grimer! My only regret is that at first I really thought it had an open mouth with a single tooth in it so that’s how I drew it, but as time has gone on, I’m starting to believe it’s actually a nose with a glare on it 🤷🏼. Either way I like the mouth idea better especially because #grimer and #muk both have their mouths open. I tried to give colors similar to its evolutions and a little more personality in the eyes. This was actually the first piece of the this project. So it came with a lot of trials and errors that come with trying a new medium that was also low quality... Even with it’s flaws, I really like how it turned out. Unfortunately, I really wanted that generation one watercolor look to be prominent before realizing it was a bit bland. So my biggest gripes with it are it’s color (being a too dull/red-orange), that I messed up the perspective on that one talon, and that I wish I had made it’s eyebrows more shaped like the hands of a clock.

I 100% prefer this design to regular Noctowl though! I would have this be a regional variant for sure! As I said I wanted it to look like it could fit right into generations one and two. Also, I made its feathers go over its foot a bit, it just felt right to me. Hope you enjoy it! Feel free to like and share!

Up next is little Para! Who I think is adorable even though I’m not a fan of baby Pokémon. I would even go as far to say that I would love it if they introduced it in the future as a baby Pokémon.

I gave it a look similar to it’s evolution paras, with the strange bumps and baby blue eyes. It’s in a slightly different position then it’s sprite with a little more hook to its claws. I tried everything in my power to make its nose look like a nose and not a mouth... it’s so hard to unsee but it’s a nose! I hope you like it and as always feel free to like and share!

When the space world demo leaked back in 2018, it was like a whole new Pokémon game leaked for me. I decided I wanted to draw every betamon that I think should’ve existed in one form or another in the Pokémon world. I wanted to draw them as close to their sprites as possible while still expressing my interpretation of them. I also decided I wanted to try watercolors for the first time EVER. Unfortunately I didn’t have any supplies for that kind of project. So I went out and bought some (terrible) cheap watercolor paper and watercolor pencils instead. There was definitely a learning curve... and I didn’t enjoy it much... but I figured I’d post some of them as a little series. I posted a bit of process too! Hope you enjoy them! I actually like beta politoed more then it’s final version, but I’d love if both of them existed! I gave this version some of normal politoed’s green and yellow colors as well as rosy cheeks. Maybe this could be a regional variant politoed 🐸. Feel free to share and like 😊 thanks!
