"Hyung, what was it like before I was born?" A young Gyeoul asks, looking up at his brother with wide eyes while he walks him home from his school, something Hangyeoul had taken a liking to.

"Honey, you better stop talking nonsense-"

"I want a divorce, you psychopath!"

"What will happen to Hangyeoul? What will happen to the new baby!?"

"Hangyeoul doesn't wanna be here anyway!"

Hangyeoul's eyes dart around as he pretends to think. "You know I don't really remember, haha. I'm old, Gyeoul." He's met with an oddly listless pout.

"Well, what were you like back then? Same old goody-two-shoes?"

A nineteen year old Hangyeoul listened to his parents argue for the umpteenth time that day since they found out his mother was pregnant. He sat on his bed trying to finish his dinner with the windows open. The natural humidity combined with the heat wave made for difficult breathing, and the latest suffocation was strangely welcome. He breathed the refreshing air while making a mental list of essentials to pack in his backpack and the places he could get a tattoo that he could easily cover up.

"Something like that."

"Did you always want to be a plastic surgeon like Dad?"

"You'll have to be a plastic surgeon, son."

Hangyeoul only glared up at his father from his bed, silently entertaining the idea that the heavy air might somehow grow hands and strangle one of them.

"It's the only way to set a good example for your new sibling. Don't think for a fucking second that you're going anywhere."

Hangyeoul sighed and smiled gently. "I wanted to be a lot of things. I did what I did because I had to." They turned a corner and he eyed the convenience store where Gyeoul likes to get his favorite snack.

"Also, if you have a job, why don't you just move out? That's what I would do."

'Hangyeoul, thank you so much for staying. You're going to be such a good brother,' his mother had praised. He pressed the gas, vapor clinging to his skin and hot wind blowing his hair back, diving deeper into the humid night, hoping it would swallow him whole. Perhaps externally, he was merely running an errand, but internally, he was mourning the life he didn't have and facilitating the people who took it away.

"It's not really necessary, you know?" he said, affectionately taking Gyeoul's hand, which was not refused.

I am extremely curious about Gyeoul's relationship with his mother before he killed her. She is said to only care about money, but she was happy and relaxed to have him put in the IV for her. He also asked about her when he came home from school. I am assuming he killed her for money and to "protect his kingdom", I'm not inclined to believe it's because he hated her.

I think it's important to note that Gyeoul, murderer and psychopath that he certainly is, did not come up with these ideas himself and it was Eugene who gave him the ideas and opportunities.

Something I also noticed in Gyeoul's flashback with his family, is that he does something that kids who experience emotional conflict within their family do. When his parents say things regarding certain topics or express certain emotions, he brings up another topic. Perhaps because he doesn't want to talk about it, or he's just tuning them out.

Itachi is twelve years old. It's midnight and he scrambles to finish handwriting his essay for history class. He reads it over one last time before tucking it away in his backpack to bring to school tomorrow. He sleeps peacefully knowing it's been taken care of.

"Itachi! Get in here!"

Itachi's heart skips a beat and he nearly stumbles as he walks into the kitchen after coming home from school.

"Yes, father?" he whispers, head low and trying to avoid eye contact.

"What's this about you not turning in an essay!?"

"I turned it in, father."

"Was it late?"

"I had written it and forgot to turn it in." That was the same lie he told the teacher when he handed it to her.

Fugaku sighs loudly. "Don't forget again." is all he says before leaving the kitchen.

"Yes, sir." Itachi mumbles, more to himself than anyone else.

Itachi is fifteen years old and is sitting at his desk expectantly, attempting to calm his breathing and focus on the assignments in front of him.

"Itachi!" Mikoto barged into her son's room. "Explain to me why I got an email from your teacher saying you have 40 missing assignments!?"

Itachi turns to face his mother in his seat and remains silent.

"How the hell did this happen, huh!?"

Itachi still says nothing.

Mikoto breathes heavily and runs a hand through her hair. "You are going to sit there and do every single one of them. This door is going to stay open, and you are not going to sleep until it's done!"

"Yes, ma'am . . ." Itachi mutters, angry but obedient.

Itachi is sixteen years old and he is sitting in his father's office, looking back and forth between the window and his handwritten notes for history. He's not allowed to work anywhere else for the time being. He's got the same song on repeat in his headphones but presses pause when he sees Sasuke walk by.

"Nii-san, what are you up to?"

Itachi looks up and pulls down his headphones. "Working, Sasuke."

"Do you wanna go get something to eat?" Sasuke asks excitedly.

"I don't have time, Sasuke."

"You used to have time . . . hngh." Sasuke leaves the office, feeling dejected.

Itachi is seventeen years old and he's got graph papers sprawled out on his bedroom floor as he attempts to design a house as fast as he can.

"Itachi."

"What, Shisui? I'm busy."

Shisui leans in the doorway trying to come off as approachable as possible. "I hear you've been having a hard time in school."

" . . . You're a little too late, Shisui." Itachi remarks, still staring at his paper.

"Itachi, just tell me what happened," Shisui pleads breathily.

"You know what happened, I don't do my homework."

"I mean, what did they say to you?"

"It doesn't matt-"

"It matters to me!"

Itachi sighs and releases the papers in his hand. His lip starts to quiver and his brow furrows as he stays silent.

Shisui swiftly joins him on the floor, embracing him in a hug. "Let me help you, okay?"

A single tear falls while Itachi relaxes into Shisui's body.

Itachi is nineteen years old and he's got himself mostly under control while he's in college.

He tries to avoid speaking with his parents and being home as much as possible, electing to spend time with Shisui and Obito instead. He's got more free time nowadays.

"How's it going, 'Tachi?" Obito nagged. "School treating you good?"

Ever since he got a new job, he's been acting like a third parent, not to Itachi's disliking.

"Yeah, school's fine," Itachi responded, gazing up at the sunlit clouds hovering above where they were waiting for their food to arrive.

"You feeling okay?"

"I haven't been feeling too well, actually," Itachi said, squinting at Obito. "I've been having some weird pains all over my body and I can't sleep. I feel tired and I can't focus during the day, too."

"You should go to the doctor. Maybe it's just a vitamin deficiency or something," Obito reassured him.

"Maybe, but I don't think I would have a deficiency."

"I know we have some relatives that have symptoms like those. Hope you're not getting sick."

"Yeah, me too."

Big brother habits are breaking my heart. I love them brothers so much, it makes me wish Yohan had a brother to call his own too.

Happy to see you're reading the series, anon! It all started with that quote from Taesoo about how Jichang had lived a lonely life, and that gave me the idea that they had difficult parents. Also, I really was wondering why Jichang beat the previous King of Chungcheong, I kinda just assumed it was for the sake of taking care of his brothers after being exiled.

I wish we had seen more siblings in Lookism, so we could see more dynamics like this. Lots of characters could benefit from a sibling.

Jichang briefly recalls the intimately grim scenario he used to play in his head. The one where he comes home to shamefully inform his brothers of his loss and that they'd be "relocating" and they'd ask what happened to him.

"I don't, but I have my reasons."

"You have money and status. What more do you want?"

It's not about what he wants. James' gaze cuts right through to his heart. Of all the things he'd seen on his little misadventure, Jichang was clearly the most pitiful. He wasn't able to win and stay in power. And now, he can't even seem to lose in peace. He is simply . . . another gear to turn. All he wanted to do was live with it.

"Haven't the other kings done similar things?"

"They're selfish and closeminded. I'm curious about you. Why make another man as broken as you?"

Jichang miserably raised his head, too many reasons running through his mind to count.

"Hyung, why's your hair so spiky and messy?" Jihan blurts, tugging on the strands running wild atop Jichang's head as they sat together on Jichang's bed.

"I cut it myself. It's messy because it's gotten long." Jichang sighed.

Jihan blankly stared at him. "Hyung, why don't you go to the barber? Do you want me to come with you? We can hang out!"

Jichang stared off to the side of Jihan, instead making eye contact with the damn near empty wallet sitting on the desk. He was still trying to make back the money he spent on his last haircut a while back, not to mention the spontaneous groceries their parents make him buy while he's on his way back from school and the other necessities they decided to randomly refuse to pay for.

"It's alright, I can do it," Jichang said breathlessly, leaning his head back against the bedframe, never breaking his line of vision.

"Come on, hyung, you never leave the house anymore. All you do is study and do chores."

Seems like that's all he's good for, anyway. He wasn't allowed to leave on his own besides for school and the store. He wasn't allowed a lot of things, actually.

"I don't mind," Jichang assured, mindlessly holding Jihan's soft and supple hands and letting him innocently fight the way he likes to.

"I want everyone to see how handsome and cool my big brother is," Jihan complained, needy but affectionate.

Doesn't everyone? Jichang's heard many a protest along those lines before. He silently laments the fact that, because of their parents, he'll never be anything more than a doll, meant to look perfect and be played with at any convenience, never to show emotions or move out of place.

"I will cut it more nicely this time," Jichang said softly, finally looking into his brother's eyes, ignorant and novice, and mourning the younger, naive self he saw in them.

Will a time come when you too, are defiled and filthy, Jihan? An abused doll?

out of everyone in lookism, na jaegyeon is one of the few who is a truly fascinating character.

na jaegyeon in the past: pushover, has his car ruined multiple times and is made fun of, is irritable but doesn't desire to fight anybody

na jaegyeon now: still irritable, extremely sensitive about his car, willing to at the very least restrain somebody, said to have a very intimidating aura, still doesn't prefer full-blown fights and walks away

they bullied my man so bad, he had to change his personality. he became harder and more intimidating, at least on the outside, while james lee became more soft and genuine. i wonder if their fight is the reason . . .

also @whateverberry said what if james stole something from him that is not visible? i was thinking about this. aside from the obvious, i'm thinking maybe he stole an organ. or maybe nothing at all.

i also had this very random thought of jaegyeon having fibromyalgia. but then i thought, he prefers not fighting and was sitting down next to james. maybe there is a teeny tiny possibility he has an illness and james simply didn't want to take from him, same as jichang. probably not tho haha.
