i don't reply to posts like this often but i must infodump.

personality and looks:

- he is NOT rude or mean like many people depict him, he's not even really all that stony-faced. his sense of humor is dry sarcasm and shock value to get a sharp laugh from sweden or denmark, and he also has general trouble with facial expressions. he often makes jokes with the rest of the group and hardly is ever as angry as people from the outside looking in would be led to believe.

- for the sake of raising iceland in a difficult climate (literally and figuratively) he's gotten very good at boxing up his own feelings and needs and working himself to the bone to make sure others are alright. this makes it that much harder for him to state what he feels or needs in difficult situations (like if there is something he's upset over, his thought process is stiffly 'if i ignore it it'll go away.' it never goes away.)

- he doesn't care what pronouns are used for him, and he doesn't even know what his gender is. he is definitively Not Just A Boy but anything regarding labeling himself just comes up as a big question mark, and he kind of likes it. the more confused people are about his gender the happier he is about how he looks. he also cannot grow a beard and has thin, blonde body hair so he just embraces his body as is. he's shorter than sweden and denmark by a few inches (i place him at 5'10) and when iceland grew up he shot up past norway (iceland is like 6ish ft, denmark is 6'1 or 2, and sweden is 6'3. finland is short king at 5'7)

- kind of adding on to the last point, he definitely isn't just stick thin. (i have some nude portraits i just finished and am going to be posting soon to show what i actually mean here) but he's lived for too damn long and experienced too many things to keep up the "perfect" body. he's got stomach rolls and stretch marks, but it comes w the territory of being as old as he is. similarly, denmark also has a bit of a dad bod, and finland is happily fluffy, and he likes to see it as just them living life and being happy together. he also likes how his body makes the gender guessing game even harder

relationships:

- i am obviously a dennor propagandist so i like to think they were at least openly in love with one another if not fully committed for a very large portion of their lives. main exception to this is the union of sweden-norway (in which sweden forced norway to marry him // become a part of the swedish kingdom)

- aside from that, i think denmark and norway are fully committed to one another despite their faults (egos, fear of opening up, etc.). norway is also really close with iceland (duh) and can't stop babying him even now. my thought process behind that is that he never got to see iceland grow up during the time he was away in sweden-norway, and wishes he could have another chance at raising a baby with den

- he is definitely cool w sweden now, and he is very close with finland in the modern eras. during the viking ages, when they first meet finland, he never dislikes him, but was just incredibly awkward around a new person and stumbled over his words (so much so that a lot of the times he just. stopped talking.)

- non nordic friends are obviously the magic trio (england and romania, three autistic wizards who play dnd on a weekly basis), prussia, and america (more like friends because they're my boyfriends friends, way more comfortable w prussia than america bc of the age difference. w america he's like. so. tiktok, huh?)

- he was closer with ancient nations (was on good terms with ancient rome, frienemies with germania, and though he never really got to know others like the goth empires, he automatically put them at a high level of respect)

magic/religion:

- he DOES practice magic, and he has ever since Freya gifted the humans and gods alike the sedír magic. he does actually see little creatures and trolls, but knows many people think he's just crazy so he often jokes about it alongside them ('give em a boom, then a bam,' from the show), he leans very much into the village crazy lady vibes

- during Viking times he was a völva for the tribes he, sweden, and denmark were parts of. though the role of a völva is traditionally carried out by a woman, as i mentioned earlier, his relationship with gender is questionable at best and he simply never corrects anyone on anything.

- during christianization in the viking period (think beginning around the 900s) he actually embraced it w open arms, but practiced it in conjunction with the old ways. many people didn't like this but he doesn't care! go cry about it!

- he actually did get a lot of shit for this, just as many did who decided to practice both religions, so once total Christianity became the norm in Scandinavia (early 1000s) he kept the paganism on the down-low, only practicing it and mentioning it around trusted individuals (denmark, finland, sweden depending on the day)

- since they discovered iceland around the beginning of the emergence of Christianity, iceland was raised mostly Christian with a few pagan lessons from his weird mother here and there. this is partially why he pretends he can't see the creatures like norway

other viking age material:

- is annoying (in denmark's words) about cleanliness, and always needs to be the first to wash his face or else he gets huffy and weird about the quality of the water. denmark goes after him and makes a show about how dirty it is to tease him.

- one of his favorite things about this era were the rituals. the burials, the cremations, the rune-writings and picturestones, he never felt more connected to the spiritual world than he did during the viking age. during this age, denmark and him got runes tattooed on their hands in lieu of wedding rings (denmark kept losing his), and though they faded with centuries of living, every time one fades they get a new one in a different spot (the modern spot is on their right hips)

- when they first invade england, norway is quietly excited at the prospect of a baby in the family (though arthur was a few centuries old, he was still a tiny toddler size), this quickly went awry when arthur was a little shit and kept pissing them off. needless to say that their finding of iceland was one of the happiest days of his life

- he was just as savage and bloodthirsty during a raid as his companions, burning houses and killing people, but that entire energy started to fizzle off a little before they found iceland, with sweden spending more time in the east to focus on trade routes (and a certain finn) and arthur coming into his own with his people. at some point, he just let denmark go off for the raid and sat in the boat, carving protection runes into every plank of wood

- at the end of the Viking Age, norway was tired of pillaging and just wanted to properly settle down with iceland and denmark. they were fairly settled beforehand, but he wanted to make it a permanent fixture until iceland was an adult. clearly, denmark wasn't in that headspace yet, and for a few centuries afterward fought for the glorious feeling of battle like he had during these times, without realizing the emotional and physical toll it took on his loved ones (kalmar union)

... yeah. so. yeah.

I need someone to infodump their characterization headcanons for hws Norway. I'm trying to incorporate them into this fic but my opinion on the character is lukewarm so my headcanons are not very fleshed out.

I repeat: this is an open invitation for Norway fans to please infodump about headcanons. preferably Viking Age headcanons but in general will do too.
