17 Ways To Keep Your House Cool During The Summer
Lower your monthly bills with these practical ways to keep your house cool this summer.
RELATED: Gearing Up For Summer: Can Your Bug Out Bag Take The Heat ?
Cost-Effective Ways to Keep Your House Cool This Summer 1. Dehumidify
|
The best period of the year to cool off at the beach is now! But if you’re a homebody, you’re probably thinking of ways to keep your house cool during the summer.
Here’s one: If “youre living in” a humid area, your sweat evaporates slower, so it’s best to wear loose cotton and other natural textiles to boost cooling.
Lowering the humidity will also help you feel cooler. Of course, there are other styles to keep your house cool.
2. Reduce and Reflect Sunlight
|
Direct sunlight coming into your home can increase the temperature. Placing blinds, curtains, or reflective window panels are some of the ways how to keep the sun out of windows.
Keeping direct sunlight away from your room will reduce the warmth in the space.
3. Turn Off Lights When Not in Use
|
Light bulbs produce heat, especially the incandescent ones. If you can’t replace this antiquated type of bulb, the least you can do is minimize their usage.
Some homes install solar panel to help minimize the cost of electricity.
4. Be Smart About Your Doors
|
If a room is cooler than the outdoor temperature, close the door. This will retain the colder room temperature for as long as possible even in the warmest part of the day.
5. Don’t Cook Inside
|
The kitchen can create and retain a lot of hot when you are cooking. The best compromise is to cook during the coolest time of the day.
If you can opt to cook in your backyard, that’ll be a great excuse for a backyard barbecue!
6. Put Smooth White Fabric Covers On Your Furniture
|
White fabric cover-ups will help retain less heat in your furniture. These covers will also reflect the light.
Some would say that it absorbs less heat from sunlight. The furniture and interior of the house stay cooler in the process.
7. Open Windows at Both Ends of the House
|
By opening windows at both ends of the house, you let air move freely throughout the whole structure. This is called a cross-ventilation.
This process helps reduce the temperature in your home. You’ll be surprised at how much cooler it becomes!
8. Set Your Ceiling Fans to Rotate Counter-Clockwise
|
Doing this will help move the warmth away from the room. In turn, you will feel cooler. I bet you didn’t think you could do that, did you?
This method of reversing the rotation of the blades will push the warmth to the ceiling instead of blowing it to your direction.
9. Point Box Fans Out the Windows
|
When you do this, you push the hot air out. This is one thing many homeowners do not realize.
Sometimes, it’s better to use fans for exhaust rather than creating an artificial breeze.

10. Unplug Gadget or Electronics
|
In this age of electronics, hot is a normal by-product. If you have children or teens playing with their Xbox on big flat screen TVs all day, perhaps it would be best to minimize their playtime.
Pull out those plugs if you are not use a contraption. Less heat created entails a cooler interior.
11. Hack a Fan Instead of Turning On the AC
|
Turning on the air conditioning is the most convenient solution, but you won’t be too happy once you get your power bill.
Did you ever think of how to cool down a room with ice? It’s a classic, but it’s proven to work. Take some ice in a bowl, place in front of a fan, and you get an instant air conditioner.
It may not be as cool as the real thing, but it’s still pretty darn effective! Better set those ice cubes to good use!
12. Hang Wet Laundry On a Clothesline Instead of Using the Dryer
|
A dryer is no distinct from an oven in the summer. They are heat multipliers, so try not to use them if you don’t need dry clothes right away.
Besides, line-drying will also cool the air coming into your home if the wind direction is favorable.
13. Make Use of Your Bathroom and Kitchen Exhaust Fans
|
Apart from drawing out any excess steam, these exhaust fans also draw out the heat from other rooms nearby.
There will be a noticeable difference. You can probably do this at the warmest part of the day when you’re not use your AC.
14. Do Your Laundry and Ironing at a Certain Time of the Day
|
Just like cooking in your kitchen, you can do this on the cooler parts of the day. This style, you won’t be adding to the warmth of your home’s interior.
Plus, your work will be much more comfortable- unless you have a strict schedule to keep.
15. Damp Curtain
People from the old days use this technique before the birth of air-conditioning units. This is quite similar to putting ice in front of the fan.
As long as there’s a breeze, that is. You can even add fabric conditioner to add fragrance!
16. Let the Night Air In
|
In the summertime, nights tend to be much cooler. Make the most of this by opening the windows before sleeping.
Of course, security should be your primary concern prior to leaving them open as you doze off. Make the necessary preparations like installing grills or only leaving the upper windows open if you live in a two-story house.
17. Plant Trees Strategically
|
This may be a long-term plan, but the benefits are also long-term. After a few years, you will be proud of the natural shade you’ve created.
Plant them in locations where you think the sunshine beats down on your home the hottest, especially during summer.
This video from DIYonTheCheap will show you how to cool down a room with a fan :P TAGEND

Having underground bunker schemes is one of the smartest investments you can make for you and your family’s safety. With all the threats we’re facing today, such as social and global upheaval, terrorist threats, natural disasters , you can never be too complacent.
Provide your family with a safe and secure haven by building an underground bunker. Check out the instructions below to learn more.
The Plan
Every devoted survivalist knows that planning is the first thing they need to do regardless of what they have to deal with. Constructing secret underground bunkers is no different.
Before you start excavating your favor place, you need to know some basics about the land.
What type of soil do you have? Where are the utility lines?
Consider consulting with a professional before digging on your land, and make sure you’re not infringing any regulations by house a bunker. In some lawsuits, you may need to build your bunker on a different piece of property.
Don’t break ground until you have your blueprint complete and finalized.
Start Digging
Once you have all the necessary legal requirements and you have all the information and materials you need in house your DIY underground bunker, then let’s get digging!
You can do it old school with a shovel, or you can speed up the process by use heavy machinery, such as a backhoe. You can rent one, but it will probably cost you a couple of hundred dollars a day.
Construct The Structure
You can construct the underground bunker’s structure yourself or purchase a shipping crate, but make sure it will fit through the hole. Keep in mind of some advice against using a shipping crate as a bunker, as they are not made to be buried or inhabited.
If you’re going to build the structure with your own hands, you need to research information materials you plan on using to make sure they’ll hold up over time. Untreated wood, for example, will decompose easily.
Concrete is usually a better alternative when building the structure of secret underground bunkers. It has the strength to withstand underground construction and it is more cost-effective.
RELATED: The Weakness Of Underground Bunkers
Create Passages
For bunkers, accessibility is key. You can construct passages from your home going to your bunker as an alternative way to get there faster especially when SHTF.
You can use scaffolding poles to support the passages, but it is not advisable to use these in supporting the ceiling. Pillars constructed of bricks is a good option but concrete is the best material for this kind of project.
Security First!
Take the necessary safety precautions when building this project. Severe weather is a mighty adversary when it comes to stimulating your bunker secured.
Check the weekly forecast before you get started. You have to make sure no water will come into your bunker by covering your ceiling with waterproof sheets.
Consider asking some friends to assist you in with the construction, but only if you trust them with the knowledge of the place of your bunker.
Air, Water, and Electricity
Your underground bunker will not be complete if it doesn’t have all the survival features you require. Make sure you have access to water, air ventilation, energy and of course, food.
Keep in mind this place should have all the necessary things you need in order to survive whatever SHTF episode will unfold before your eyes.
Radio Communication
When you take cover in a bunker, it’s best not to go outside until it’s perfectly safe. You may not be certain when it’s safe to come out and know how bad the outside situation is.
This is when radio communication is very useful. Instructions can be given from an outside source while you’re cut off from the people around you.
Make sure your radio is also battery-operated in case electricity is out. You’ll never know how bad things can be when SHTF!

In extreme survival situations, 50 feet of rope would be a lot more useful to you than 8-12 feet. However, this 550 cord belt gives you at the least 50 feet of rope that is quickly accessible.
And, depending on your waist size, up to 100 ft of strong cord. It is super quick to deploy, you can unravel it in seconds.
This particular DIY belt is induced with Slatt’s rescue weave and is our favorite one for survival.
Watch this video from Survivalkraft to find out how to tie a serpent knot!

Now you know those paracords aren’t merely accessories you can look cool in. They are also survival gears you can feel safer and secure with.
Learn to make more DIY paracord projects for your own use and perhaps to give as survival gifts to your family and friends.

How It Works Why Should I Do This ? Benefits of a Solar Powered Air Cooler DIY Solar Powered Air Conditioner
Solar Powered Air Cooler | Keeping Cool Off the Grid
How It Work
Solar powered air conditioning is not a new theory. For this portable solar powered air conditioner, it runs by threading cold water through the pail, before being cooled the window screen and dissipated by the fan.
It’s a simple yet highly effective concept and one that you can do yourself.
Why Should I Do This?
Living off the grid has many advantages, but a lot of disadvantages as well. One of the things you’ll have to contend with, especially if you live more in the southern parts, is really hot summers.
Add the fact that temperatures are rising every year, and you’ll find that you’ll be sweating like a pig at the butcher. While you can definitely fork out the money for a solar air conditioner, you can save some money by making one yourself.
Benefits of a Solar Powered Air Cooler
When the temperature goes up in your safehouse, this might lead to inconvenience, dehydration, and even death. Having a solar air conditioner such as this one can spell the difference between comfort and … well, potentially deadly discomfort.
Having one of these babies in your safehouse will construct SHTF situations much more bearable.
DIY Solar Powered Air Conditioner
Materials you’ll need :P TAGEND
5-gallon bucket Window screen, black plastic( minimum 24 ” X 76 ”) Fan( computer fans work great) Cooling pad, or filter material 1/4” Aquarium tubing Clamp Fountain pump Push Pin Solar panel( optional)
Tools :P TAGEND
Yardstick 1- 2” pit insured Marker Razor tool
Step 1: Fill Bucket with Water
First, start by filling the pail with two gallons of water.
Step 2: Make Circular Holes
|
Next, cut circular pits around the bucket, constructing sure they are all well above the water line. Then, vertically drill a pair of two pits, spacing each pair every 5-6 inches.
These holes should be approximately 1.5 inches in diameter. Between these pairs, drill a single pit, 2 inches in diameter.
Step 3: Cut the Cooling Pad
Next, you need to cut down the cool pad. You will want it to be about 13 -1 4 inches high, and approximately 30 -3 1 inches around.
This is roughly the measures for the bucket.
RELATED: 13 Ways To Cool Your House During A Blackout
Step 4: Make Window Screen
After that, take a regular window screen and double layer between the bucket and the cool pad. You are also welcome to use garden cloth.
This will help hold in the moisture of the cooling pad away from direct contact with the air holes.
Step 5: Trace and Cut Fan Edge
Next, tracing the circular edge of the fan on top of the lid and cut.
Step 6: Position the Fan in the Hole
After that’s done, place the fan in the hole. It should fit nicely in your solar powered air cooler without falling through.
Step 7: Wrap the Tubing and Clamp End of Hose
Next, fell the fountain pump in the bottom and connect the 1/4 inch aquarium tubing. Then, wrap the tubing around the bucket, and once again at top of the bucket.
What is a fountain pump? A device used for water ornament or aeration that gushes up water in your pond or aquarium.
Clamp off the end of the hose to keep the water from escaping.
Step 8: Make a Soaker Hose
To turn this into a soaker hose, pin along the length of the hose, about every inch around the diameter of the hose. This will saturate the cooling pad.
Step 9: Hook the Fan to Solar Panel
|
Finally, hook up the fan to the solar panel, and you are defined! Your solar powered room air conditioner should get between 65 -4 0 degrees, depending on how cold the water is.
Add ice if you want cooler air.
Optional :P TAGEND
If you are going camping, you are able to add a 90 -degree piece of PVC and dryer ventilate hose to isolate the air.

7 Ways To Find True North Without A Compass
New Post has been published on https://outdoorsurvivalqia.com/awesome/7-ways-to-find-true-north-without-a-compass/
7 Ways To Find True North Without A Compass
If push comes to the shove and you need to find the true north without a compass, you must know how to do that to survive. We’ll tell you how today!
RELATED: Finding Yourself Lost ?
In this article :P TAGEND
Shadow-Tip Method Stars in the Northern Hemisphere Stars in the Southern Hemisphere Stars in the Equator A Watch in the Northern Hemisphere A Watch in the Southern Hemisphere Sun’s Direction
Finding True North: Navigate Outdoors Without a Compass
1. Shadow-Tip Method
There are three essential components in using a stick to act as a true north compass: the sunshine, a stick, and the stick’s shadow.
Place a stick upright on level ground where it can cast a shadow. Mark the tip-off of the shadow and wait for about 10 -1 5 mins. until the shadow changes its position. When it does, mark the second largest shadow. Stand on the first mark with your left foot and the second mark on with your right. Doing this would make you stand in front of the true north.
2. Starrings in the Northern Hemisphere
What is the Northern Hemisphere? The portion of the globe above the equator. The Northern Hemisphere consists of 90% of the world’s whole population.
Looking at the stars in the northern hemisphere is one of the best ways on how to find true north without a compass. This is a good technique to utilize when the stars are glistening brightly in the clear night skies.
Locate the Big Dipper constellation and draw an imaginary line on its two outer stars.
In sky lore, these two stars are called Dubhe and Merak. The line points to Polaris which is the last star in the Little Dipper constellation.
Now that you received Polaris, only depict an imaginary line downward and that is where the true north is.
3. Superstars in the Southern Hemisphere
If you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, the North star will not be visible. Hence, you will be required to look for the Little Dipper instead.
Look for the Southern Cross, which is composed of five superstars and is angled on one side. Put five imaginary lines as big as a long time axis of the Southern Cross in front of its angled side. From there, depict another imaginary line downward — this points toward the true south. Thus, this makes the opposite direction the true north.
4. Stars in the Equator
In this method, you’ll be using Orion’s Belt to navigate. It runs from east to west, so you can project a line from these directions.
Projecting another line starting from the middle superstar of the belt downward will point you to the true north.
RELATED: Primitive Navigation Without A Map Or Compass
5. A Watch in the Northern Hemisphere
Hold your watch horizontally and make sure the hour hand points at the sun. Bisect that slant you insure between your watch’s hour hand and the 12 o’clock — this angle is the north-south line.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the sunshine is in the south when it’s midday, so opposite of it will be where north is. If, on the other hand, you follow daylight saving hour, then bisect it with the 1 o’clock instead of 12.
6. A Watch in the Southern Hemisphere
When you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, phase the 12 o’clock at the sun or 1 o’clock if it’s on daylight saving hour. Bisect a line from the hour hand and the one pointed at the sunshine, which builds your north-south line.
Since you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, the sun is due north at midday, resulting you to where the true north is.
7. Sun’s Direction
Knowing where the sunlight is positioned will help you find where the true north is. Technically, the sunshine rises in the east and sets in the west.
So by early morning, watch where the sunshine rises. The true north will be a quarter turn counterclockwise from that direction.
On the other hand, if you assure the sundown, which is the west direction, the north is approximately a one-quarter turn clockwise from that direction.
Download or reference this infographic for future reference.
Of course, detecting the true north is simpler if you have a compass, so it’s best to always keep one in your bug out purse. But in cases when there’s none, learning the above-mentioned styles can help you out in finding your route back.
I’ve tried the shadow-tip method and it worked perfectly. The downside, though, is you need to have sunlight to be able to use the method used so it will be hard to rely on this one after sunset.
Do you know other ways to find true north without a compass? Share them in the comments segment below!

Crock Pot Pork Chops with Gravy So good!
New Post has been published on https://outdoorsurvivalqia.com/awesome/crock-pot-pork-chops-with-gravy-so-good/
Crock Pot Pork Chops with Gravy So good!
Tumblr media
How to construct Crock Pot Pork Chops with Gravy
This super simple recipe from Crock Pot Pork Chops with Gravy is the most popular recipe on The Country Cook. Super tender pork chops cooked in an easy, creamy sauce. The gravy can be used on the pork chops and also on delicious mashed potatoes as a side. Check out my Crock Pot Million Dollar Mashed Potatoes. It goes perfect with these chops!
Tumblr media
Video included( to make it even easier !)
youtube
Crock pot cooking tips
This is one of those fix-it and forget it type crock pot recipes. It helps to have a digital crock pot these days. You can cook it for a certain amount of time so and then it will automatically go to a keep-warm put. This is awesome if you’re at work all day and don’t want to come home to overcooked tough pork chops. Slow cookers are so smart these days. The Ninja brand slow cooker is one of my faves.
What you’ll require: bone-in pork chops onion soup mix chicken broth cream of chicken soup dry pork gravy mix garlic powder to thicken gravy: corn starch cold water
Note: I like the bone-in pork chops for this recipe. I find that it genuinely dedicates this dish a lot of flavor but if you prefer boneless you can certainly do that. But I definitely do not recommend a thin cut pork chop. Just be careful when taking them out when they are finished cook. The meat will be very tender so I like to scoop them out with a spatula.
How to make :P TAGEND
In a 5-6 quart slow cooker, combine onion soup mix, chicken broth, cream of chicken soup and pork gravy mix. Whisk together until combined. Don’t worry about any clumps, they will go away during cooking.
Note: I find this works better in an oval slow cooker instead of a round one. The chops cook more evenly. Season both sides of the chops with a little bit of garlic powder.
Place pork chops into the slow cooker. Do your best to spread them out and cover with the gravy mixture.
Cover and cook on low about 4-6 hours
Just before the pork chops are done. Whisk together the corn starch and cold water in a small bowl.
Once it is smooth, pour it in with your pork chops in the slow cooker and stir gently. Cover and switch the slow cooker to high and cook for another 30 minutes( until gravy has thickened .) Then serve with mashed potatoes!
Enjoy!

I suppose my love for my slow cooker is pretty well known( well, at least to my family ). It really is one of my most favorite kitchen appliances. It’s right up there with my stand mixer. It is the busy mother, busy worker, and novice cook’s best friend. It can take a rather tough cut of meat, like what I am utilizing in this Crock Pot Cubed Steak with Gravy recipe, and turns it into tenderness on a plate.

What can I serve with cubed steak?
I gotta served this cubed steak and gravy with my Million Dollar Mashed Potatoes and suffocate it in the gravy. Or, perhaps you want something a bit lighter? Then perhaps my Italian Green Beans, Bacon Garlic Green Beans or Maple Glazed Carrots.

With HBO’s ‘Chernobyl’ Trailer, the Worst Nuclear Disaster of All Time Is Having a Moment

With HBO’s ‘Chernobyl’ Trailer, the Worst Nuclear Disaster of All Time Is Having a Moment
” There was nothing sane about Chernobyl ,” a character gravely intones during the trailer for Chernobyl, a new HBO series that premieres May 6. And for those who’ve forgotten the details of the infamous nuclear calamity–or who weren’t alive when it happened–the preview is a jarring reminder of the events of the spring of 1986, when a reactor exploded in a nuclear facility situated in Soviet-controlled Ukraine.
As the Chernobyl trailer illustrates in oft-excruciating detail, the fallout led to illness, death, and uncertainty in the small Ukraine city of Pripyat and beyond, as Soviet officials scrambled to contain the damages–and to downplay the meltdown’s impacts. (” In words of radioactivity ,” notes one of Chernobyl’s politicos,” I’m told it’s the equivalent of a chest X-ray .”)

Chernobyl stars Oscar nominee Emily Watson( Breaking the Waves, Punch-Drunk Love) as a physicist attempting to find the cause of the disaster; Mad Men’s Jared Harris as a first-responder reckoning with the scope of the fallout; and Stellan Skarsga? rd as real-life deputy prime minister Boris Shcherbina.
The series isn’t the only notable re-examination of the catastrophe constructing the rounds in 2019. Earlier this year, journalist Adam Higginbotham published Midnight in Chernobyl, a reported account of the disaster. This month find the release of Kate Brown’s Manual for Survival: A Chernobyl Guide to the Future, about the aftermath of the meltdown.
