Goodnight 3DS eshop

the 3DS eshop shutdown yesterday, signalling the end of life for the system. so if you'd allow me, I'd like to talk a little bit about one of my favorite handhelds

I was bought an ambassador model 3DS for my birthday in 2011. an aqua blue model with one of the pretty admittedly meager selection of launch titles, Pilotwings Resort. I was ecstatic, I had been a proud passenger of the 3DS hype train ever since I read about its announcement in the Official Nintendo Magazine, pawing over every detail and rumor that was printed. I didn't have functional internet access at this point in my life so printed video game magazines like ONM and the then soon to rebrand Pokemon World magazine were my only portals into the world of video games, short of actually buying them in shops. Something that sticks in my head very vividly from the time between its release and me actually getting one was seeing an interactive display model in a duty free electronics store at an airport on one of my many unaccompanied flights to visit my dad. It was to my young brain, unlike any games system I had used before, baring more of a resemblance to the fancy new iPhones my parents were using than the DS lite I had with me at the time. Not to mention the 3D screen, a technology I had not experienced outside of cinema before (the first 3D film I saw was Avatar some years previous), the depth of field provided by this screen was genuinely amazing, and its use as a tool to aid gameplay in games like Super Mario 3D Land and the Legend of Zelda N64 remakes made it feel like a genuinely useful gimmick, even if it did often cause performance issues (due to the 3DS hardware requiring you to run two simultaneous GPU pipelines, rather than just rasterizing the scene twice like modern VR headsets work )

The 3DS was my introduction to a tonne of Nintendo's franchises, both old and new. It was how I beat my first Zelda game, in the surprisingly improved remake of Ocarina of Time. It was how I first played a Metroid game with the Ambassador Edition Virtual Console release of Metroid Fusion and it was how I first got to experience Fire Emblem in Fire Emblem Awakening.

In addition to this, it was my first real introduction to a system with internet connectivity and an online store. Sure the family Wii had the shopping channel, but the Wii was disconnected from the internet most of the time and I only used the shop once, after a well meaning but not tech literate family member bought a Wii points card for me, But the 3DS was mine, and I could browse the shop whenever i had Wi-Fi. The 3DS eshop had some really unique quirks even compared to later Nintendo storefronts, fun animations, trailers for upcoming games (which had to be downloaded as apps due to limitations in the eshop app itself) and a general atmosphere second only to that of the original Wii Shop channel. The Content on the eshop was incredibly varied too, originally it was a mix of smaller games similar to WiiWare (called 3DS Download Titles) and the downloadable DSiware that was featured on the short lived DSi system and its shop. but later it expanded to first include a portion of Nintendo's Classic games as emulated Virtual Console titles and later offering entire full "retail" games as downloads. Some of the most interesting 3DS download titles were the 3D Classics series, a collection of NES and Arcade titles re imagined to make use of the 3D display.

For all my love of this system, it wasn't all perfect. The first two years of the systems life was more Barren than the PS5's, and without the pandemic as an extenuating factor. My strongest memory of playing the system in its early years was playing DS games like Pokemon Black and New Super Mario Bros, while waiting for new 3DS games that are actually worth playing, something that was pretty rare. Several franchises had a pretty rough time on the 3DS, Pokemon for example had some pretty tortured releases with the buggy and kiddiefied Pokemon X and Y, and the stripped back and lazy feeling Mystery Dungeon: Gates To Infinity, a misstep that felt like it killed the series at the time. It genuinely felt like Game Freak couldn't really get a proper grasp on making 3D games, compared to the 2D/2.5D ones found on the DS and previous systems, something that has only become more clear with their switch releases being much the same way. One other Issue lots of people, myself included, had with the system during its lifespan was how Nintendo drip fed virtual console software over years, even when the same titles were already available on the Wii previously. An Attitude that Nintendo has continued with the Wii U virtual console and the new Nintendo Switch Online subscription service.

My time with my original 3DS was sadly cut short when, on my bus journey to college, a can of coke that was put in my bag without my knowledge exploded soaking everything in the bag in sticky acidic syrupy liquid, luckily for my sake the 3DS was the only thing killed, My Macbook with unbacked-up coursework and my hard drive with 3 unfinished mixing sessions both survived the incident only becoming faintly coke scented in the process. Several months later I was bought a "new 3DS" (Nintendo's naming scheme for the 3DS was Byzantine at best and Gilliamesque at worst). This new system was my introduction to Console Hacking and the homebrew scene, something I have been involved in as a user ever since and hopefully a hombrew developer as soon as I get the spare time to port something.

thank you for reading and letting me indulge my nostalgia for a system that I used from launch and will continue to use long after its official discontinuation

Vmin Vlive Asks

From anon: saw on twitter people asking for vmin vilive again. If vmin were just friends it wouldn't be a problem streaming together, or if they hated each other as some say they would be professional enough to stream together without any problems. But since they don't, it's because it's difficult, even as a professional, because vmin is so cute with each other. just a thought.

From anon 2: It saddens me that we still haven't got a Vmin live/selfie. It really makes me wonder. Surely they can go an hour without flirting/touching/exposing themselves, right lol? Same with a selfie. V did a live with JK and JM did one with JK, last year. V uploaded a selfie of him and JK on NYE, but when it comes to Vmin we barely get crumbs. Not saying I expect it, but it raises the question of what the big deal is kinda. Worst part is antis see it as confirmation that Vmin aren't close. Makes me sad.

From anon 3: What are your thoughts on why we haven't seen Vmin selfies or vlives in a while? Same with Jikook. Nothing from them either. Do you think Jimin just isn't wanting to for some reason? Even TK uploaded a selfie on NYE and then we got Tae in a video, in a rush to get their selfie uploaded. Kinda makes me sad. Not cause T/JK uploaded a selfie, but I just wish Vmin would throw us a bone. Since we haven't seen any selfies/lives with J/k**k either, seems maybe its on Jimin's end why we aren't. Maybe?

Perhaps this is a moment where being a namjinist is quite a handy thing since we’re rather used to a lack of selcas, even if there are moments that we know (and even saw) them take some together and yet we never got to see the selca, meaning they took them merely for themselves as memory. Which kind of makes it actually much cuter, but that’s besides the point. Same goes for vlives, before the RJRJ vlive Summer 2020, we had to wait a very long time for a namjin vlive. Perhaps I’m just desensitized to this wish of a joined vlive, not that I wouldn’t want one, I very much do, but I’m used to just…not getting one, I suppose?

Admin 2 has actually written a post early on into our time on tumblr about their theories regarding the potential of a vmin vlive and how chances are we will likely not get one, at least not any time soon. Looking at anon 2’s question if they would really not be able to go an hour without flirting or touching or doing something else that could “expose” them—I’d like for us to remember their “Radio” for Japanese ARMY where they basically spent the entire time talking softly/sweetly with each other, Jimin calling the way Tae wrote words on a whiteboard “cute” (the video was deleted but this is at least the translation of this), how he wasn’t able to open a pen so he softly asked Tae do it for him, and how Jimin did this funny charade move which Tae claimed was “Jimin waking up” resulting in Jimin playfully/cutely “hitting” Tae’s chest (1:28 onward). And that’s edited content, yet it’s so sweet and full of little tender vmin moments.

Now imagine that but without editing and happening live.

Of course, Jimin and Tae are absolute professionals at their job, I don’t have any kind of doubt about it, but perhaps it’s just something they’ve decided they don’t want to do (despite Jimin’s initial “promise” of talking Tae into doing it with him, and Tae saying “okay” on the phone when asked about it). Not due to a lack of possibilities or time, not due to a lack of self-control both verbal and physical wise, but due to some completely different reason only they know. We know what literal hellscape the comments during vlives are, so imagine what kind of nightmare the comments during a vmin vlive would be…it makes me sad and furious just thinking about it. Considering the comments are already full of hate and shipping related comments and questions when they do solo vlives. Or how hateful people were when Jimin, Seokjin and Yoongi did their Just Dance vlive together in 2020, how Seokjin was basically accused of “getting in the way” of y*onm*n and far, far worse things, even though all three of them were having so much fun together.

We know how much certain people despise vmin and any (cute) interactions between Jimin and Tae that show that all their wishes or claims that “they hate each other” and “have drifted apart” are not true. Also, remember how Tae posted their ITS bed selca on weverse and was flooded with hate for it? I admit, that was in parts due to “bad timing” (or rather people being unable to stop demanding things from Bangtan without immediately turning hateful but that’s a whole different story) but in larger parts due to it going against “popular agendas”.

“Worst part is antis see it as confirmation that Vmin aren't close. Makes me sad.” If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my years as ARMY, as well as vminnie and namjinist, it’s that the opinion of antis is worth less than dirt. Even dirt is more useful, tbh. They can think whatever they like, but the good thing is, their opinion and whatever they think is a “confirmation” of their agenda, it doesn’t affect the truth and the reality of Jimin’s and Tae’s bond in any kind of way. So, please, don’t let their noisiness make you sad. Literal antis are not worth our times. Not in relation to vmin and not in relation to BTS in general.

“Not cause T/JK uploaded a selfie, but I just wish Vmin would throw us a bone.” While I know what you mean, I’d like to remind you, and everyone else, that we’ve gotten a whole mountain of bones in recent weeks between RUN and other content like Winter Package. We might not have gotten any selcas or vlive, but we got so many other things, do they not count? Besides, we’ve made it five years without vmin vlive, I think we’ll be okay, no?

So, it’s okay to hope we might get a vlive from Tae and Jimin together one day, as well as a selca, if they’ve decided against it behind the scenes, we should respect and accept that. In the end, if they’ll one day do decide to do a vlive or post a selca out of the blue, imagine how happy we’d be.

Instead let us look forward with anticipation and excitement for tomorrow’s Grammy performance and hopefully their first win, even though I’ll forever be salty about the organizers putting their category in the pre-show instead of making it part of the main gala despite knowing that their category is basically the most anticipated one this year. As well as most of the categories with POC nominees being outside of the main gala. Very telling.

Yes, plenty. @rosepetal-flyingbirds’ reblogs are hilarious and hte reaction images have startled more than one laugh out of me, and plenty of you guys’ asks or comments also get to me. I still remember @methotrex8 saying how the rational part of their brain was thinking of how good the scene was or smth, while their lizard brain was stuck on how “they held hands 👁👄👁”

I laugh very easily at very silly things too, so multiple people just going “ow, fuck no, fuck spring” on the eve of chapter 38 was fucking hilarious to me lol

6. what is your favourite sense to incorporate in your writing and why?

Huh, this is an interesting one! I don’t think I give much focus to multiple-senses descriptions in scenes (I need to work onm y descriptions lol), but I’d say sound when it comes to a character in interaction with Ivar, because there are a lot of auditory cues about him, either little sounds of exertion when he moves, the characteristic sound of his steps, the creak of the crutch (except in modern AUs of course) when he holds it tighter for whatever reason, the non-verbal sounds he makes as an answer or whatever in a conversation, or something like a repetitive action having an auditory cue (like him playing with a knife in Ch 28 of Nostalgia for example). I think sound is interesting to incorporate, and I have a lot of fun doing so!

13. do you make playlists for when you write? if so, share!

I do, even if I end up listening to my regular playlist on repeat at the end of the day.

I have a Writing Inspo playlist that is usually just songs that made me go ‘huh’ and made me wanna write something about/inspired by them. I keep adding to that list even if I never (or rarely) actually write anything based on songs.

And then I have a very messy Nostalgia playlist (tell me No Time To Die doesn’t have Narses written all over it, I dare you lol)

Y*onm*n anon again, I guess I’ve just been getting weird vibes over this whole promotion period (not in a OMG! they’re a couple way just to clarify) just i found it weird that the pairings for almost the entire period has been t**k*ok and y*onmin, both being very cuddly. I just don’t like how the promotion interviews / vlives feels like pandering. Especially as someone a part of the lgbtq+ community.

Yoongi has been cuddly? Where? (Seriously where? I wanna see. I adore him.)

I haven’t noticed any pairings but to be honest my eyes get drawn to Jimin first, then RM...by the time I’m focused on the rest, BTS is onto something else. (Currently the GQ shoot has me stalled...so pretty...I might be here awhile)

Also I tend to like the subtle jikook things or the backstage moments more than any photoshoots, on stage antics, or overt stuff during interviews. Though I think jikook are louder now, I still think they try to keep interactions on the low (like hands slyly reaching for each other during a New Years Eve group hug). If you are like me and enjoy seeing jikook interact then rejoice in how well fed we are. I cannot complain about anything on that front. I feel downright spoiled. (Improvised piggyback I’m looking at you)

The pandering (perhaps fetishizing) the lgbtq+ community in kpop is a whole other discussion that definitely warrants its own post.

      this  day  comes  with  heaviness  to  the  heart.  he,  who  is  habitually  tender  and  benevolent  now  mantled  with  woe  and  melancholy.  the  bereavement  and  the  quietus  within  the  heart  feels  all  too  vacant  for  him  to  process,  even  as  it  has  been  many  years,  it  is  still  rather  surreal  to  him...  how  fragile  life  candidly  is.  this  certain  despondency  becomes  evident  across  his  features  days  before  the  anniversary  and  now  that  wisteria  is  such  a  significant  part  of  his  life,  she  has  unfortunately  embedded  herself  into  witnessing  the  toil  this  takes  on  both  the  soul  and  psyche.  

      ❛    you  don’t  have  to  do  anything,  i’ll  be  quick.    ❜      the  air  around  him  is  surprisingly  clear,  and  the  cool  wind  is  pleasant  against  his  face.  he  had  meant  not  drag  her  along  with  him  to  the  cemetery  and  yet,  here  they  are.  there  is  apprehension  gathered  amidst  the  thorax,  such  which  presses  down  onto  it  and  hinders  the  breath  --  perplexity  is  not  yet  written  across  the  expression,  but  manifested  nonetheless,  when  he  crouches  down  to  clean  the  dust  with  some  water  and  a  paper  towel.  this  being  more  than  a  ritual  of  what  namoo  would  like  to  confide  as  paying  respects,  rather  than  having  any  meaning  at  all.      ❛    we’ll  be  out  here  shortly.    ❜      perhaps,  this  reassurance  is  more  so  to  himself  rather  than  to  wisteria.      ╱      @pcstilnt

      ❛    no--  i-it’s  fine...    ❜      the  mess  is  one  thing  he  could  deal  with  later  and  frankly  avowing  it  does  not  concern  him  much.  what  does  perturb  him  is  the  fact  that  he  that  he  has  reached  to  this  point  of  feebleness  where  limbs  no  longer  carry  themselves  and  as  the  mind  wanders  to  an  abundant  streams  of  thoughts  and  notions  that  is  when  he  loses  his  balance.  had  it  not  been  wisteria  at  his  front  door,  who  held  onto  his  forearms  to  regain  the  balance  he  clearly  lacks,  who  knows  what  would  have  been  of  him...

   ❛    ian…  ?    ❜      there  is  a  moment  of  contemplation  that  brings  silence  upon  them.  perhaps  it  is  the  hit  to  his  head  as  he’s  still  feeling  rather  lightheaded  when  the  blur  steadily  shifts  into  a  clearer  vision  and  he  is  able  to  scrutinize  the  lineaments  of  the  witch  properly.  and  abruptly,  realization  arrives.  he  comprehends  the  situation  and  whom  is  he  speaking  to  and  the  mortification  causes  tremor  to  his  insides.  they  don’t  look  much  alike,  now  that  he  thinks  about  it.      ❛    o-oh  god,  i’m  so  sorry  for  this…  !    ❜      what  a  way  to  be  introduced  to  someone  new.  namoo  knew  how  significant  wisteria  is  to  ianthina  and  how  has  she  longed  for  her  arrival,  how  she  had  such  colossal  duress  for  her  arrival  for  so  long  and  this  is  how  she  first  encounters  him  ?  abashment  taints  his  neck  in  a  light  hue  of  carnation,  his  ears  feel  as  if  they  are  flaming  with  embarrassment.  more  than  the  shamefacedness  there  patent  fatigue  lingering  at  the  corners  of  his  eyes  and  he  barely  raises  a  hand  to  his  chest  to  bow,  somehow,  in  his  introduction.      ❛    i’m  namoo  --  you  must  be  wisteria.    ❜

     eyes  squint  slightly  as  he’s  forgotten  his  glasses  on  the  kitchen  counter,  namoo  feels  slightly  disoriented  and  yet,  he  still  insists  on  standing  on  both  of  his  feet.      ❛    this  is  so  embarrassing,  gosh.  i  wanted  to  greet  you  properly  when  you  came,  uh--  let  me…  let  me  get  you  something  to  drink  --  do  you  like  tea  ?    ❜      there’s  an  adrenaline  rush  through  his  veins,  accelerating  his  heartbeat  to  a  pace  he  can  hardly  handle.  a  sheepish  snicker  escapes  his  lips  as  he  proffers  a  somewhat  apologetic  simper  across  his  lips  --  cordiality  manifestly  portrayed  through  the  act.  only  had  he  minded  himself  and  got  some  repose  as  he  should  have  done,  none  of  this  would  have  occurred  and  the  welcome  she  deserves  would  have  been  gifted.  alas,  what  has  happened  has  happened  and  without  any  ability  to  travel  in  time,  namoo  can  only  endeavor  to  compensate…  in  his  own  ways.      ❛    special  brew,  i’m  sure  you’ll  love  it.    ❜       ╱      @zephyrvm​ , cont.
