Yukimura: Could you keep it a secret from Sanada? You see, I want to surprise him. Atobe: My lips are sealed. Tezuka: Now if we could only keep them that way. Atobe: If you weren’t so sexy, I’d beat your brains out. (Source Green Acres.)
I’m with Tezuka, just because it’d be so fun

as it's the day of sin, do you have any sinful thoughts you'd feel like sharing about any S members that've caught your eye, seiichi?
Tumblr media
"If you haven't noticed, there are a lot of pretty people that show up at S on a routine basis." A lot of people, covering a lot of ages. Some with scars, tattoos, piercings, and plenty of bandages to spare between all of the different groups there. Some had gimmicks like Seiichi and his dad, but others were just themselves -- out for a good time and a break from the stress of the real world.
It didn't matter what you were into, going to S was a good way to get your hands (or at least your eyes) on someone that fit the bill. He'd seen so many interesting people come and go, and even more interesting people stick around, over the past handful of years. A few of which had starred in a fantasy or two since he started taking that kind of a liking to the people around him.
"I've... had my eye on a few of the regulars for a couple of years now." Most of which were based on talent, but a couple did catch his eye because of their personal appearance. "I don't see the prince often, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't look forward to him showing his face." Seiichi could feel his cheeks burning up at the simple admission. "Cherry's older boys are pretty cute too."

𝕚 𝕥𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕜 𝕪𝕠𝕦'𝕣𝕖 𝕣𝕖𝕒𝕝𝕝𝕪 𝕔𝕠𝕠𝕝 | 009.
haikyuu x m!reader
masterlist
[name] was the last of his team to step off the bus. he was more tense than usual. probably something to do with the devastating memories that came with facing inarizaki again.
apart of the first years, they all remembered the loss they had suffered after facing the black and white team last year. they had been lucky enough that itachiyama had knocked inarizaki off in the semi-finals in their second nationals, meaning they hadn't faced them since.
it was [name]'s first loss, something that stuck with him every time he played. he could never quite shake the heartache he felt. but it was just a practice match, he needed to remind himself. they had won nationals, surely they could handle a practice match with the team that placed lower than them.
that's right, they were ranked lower than them. [name] couldn't wait to see the look on miya atsumu's face when he mentioned it. the setter needed to be taken down a peg or two.
omoikane raised an eyebrow at the libero, already sensing something was brewing in his mind. "hirabayashi-kun, behave. inarizaki has been kind enough to allow us to train with them"
[name] scowled, offended, "i wasn't going to do anything!"
"we all know what you look like when you're planning something" yuuma slapped him on the shoulder, causing him to trip with the force of the hit. the h/c haired boy merely sent him a glare, shuffling over to his second year counterparts instead.
as they entered the gym inarizaki had already completed their set up, nets ready to go and drills in action. [name] knew it was purposeful, attempting to show off their skills and intimidate takumashii upon arrival. the second and third years remained unfazed, aware of inarizaki's skill levels and playing styles already.
the first years on the other hand were practically shaking like leaves. they looked ready to float away.
"cheer up!" susumu smirked at the pale look on their faces, amused by their fear. [name] sent him a small glare, remembering the shear panic on jun and yuichi's faces the minute they had shown up to their first tournament last year. it was hard to ignore the first time nerves and they could greatly impact the course of a match.
luckily for them, it wasn't a match they needed to worry about. just their reputation as seiichi had so kindly announced on the bus. [name] scowled at the third year boy, he was always stirring up trouble.
[name] followed along behind kousei, heading towards kita shinsuke and ojiro aran to greet them as captains. the older boy beside him bowed first, shaking hands with kita. [name] did the same with aran.
"thank you for having us" kousei spoke up first. "it's good to have another team to practice with"
"yes, it will be beneficial for us too" kita nodded, a small smile on his face.
"they're like robots" aran blanched, both he and [name] merely watched them interact.
[name] snorted, covering his mouth to hide his amusement as kousei side-eyed him. it was a silent threat. behave.
aran held back his own smile at the vice-captain's outburst. he was glad they weren't stuck up like atsumu had tried to tell them. sure, they had played against each other last year but they hadn't properly interacted before.
hopefully, this would be fun as well as beneficial.
this is was painful. [name] glared as he rubbed his raw arms. atsumu had been pelting him with serves for the past 10 mins, non-stop. he had yet to miss one receive but and it was starting to get on both of their nerves. the blonde setter grit his teeth, eye twitching in annoyance.
"you're never going to win whatever stupid challenge is in your head" suna remarked, crossing his arms and raising an eyebrow at the smack that resounded when atsumu served yet another ball towards the libero. seiichi had been the one to suggest he and atsumu work together for their warm ups to put aside whatever rivalry they had going on. they had competed through every step.
the takumashii ace, the traitor, was currently laughing his ass off on the other side of the gym, leaning on kousei to stand up straight as he watched the pair miserably play.
osamu and suna finally reached out to stop atsumu's next move, dragging him away to join everyone else in picking teams for their practice match. they were going to have two matches at once so that all players could play on court.
[name], seeing this, finally dropped to the floor in relief. yuuma held a hand out, biting back an amused grin.
"come on, we shouldn't keep taicho waiting" [name] nodded along in agreement, following the older boy to the group despite his body's reluctance.
"cheer up, heiwa-kun" jun and yuichi flagged him as they approached, easily ready to tease him all day. he groaned internally, slumping his shoulders in a pathetic attempt to ignore them.
"hirabayashi-senpai?" his saviour, the h/c haired boy's head snapped up immediately, expression glowing at the sight of ikehara tomio.
"yes, ikehara-kun?" he immediately shoved jun and yuichi to the side, suddenly full of energy as he hopped over, dragging the first year boy to the other side of the group.
"are we playing in different teams or as our normal team?" he questioned, unaware of his senpai's weird behaviour.
"i think we're playing in our regular team. why? you don't want to?" he hummed, raising an eyebrow at the shy boy. despite still being taller than his upperclassman, the boy cowered at the question, quickly taking it the wrong way.
"no, no! it's not that i'm complaining-" [name] laughed, stunning the boy again. he should probably be used to his smile now, after all, it was usually sent in the first year's direction. [name] pat his shoulder, trying to get him to release some tension.
"don't be so nervous, i'm not going to scold you" his eyes shone with amusement, "we can ask to switch it up, we're going to be playing a lot of matches today so it's fine"
"oh.. okay" tomio nodded slowly. "i wanted to.. i want to play with you, senpai"
[name] froze. his eyes widened slightly, blankly staring at the boy. tomio paused too, now unsure what he had said to warrant such a reaction. he blinked owlishly at [name], silently freaking out. they hadn't even known each other that long, was he being weird? did [name] want to be left alone? was that a weird request-
"oh" [name] slowly smiled, shyly chewing on his lip to stop the grin from widening. "well, i hope we can play together too, ikehara-kun"
the first year boy stood, stunned for a moment before also breaking out into a smile. neither had the chance to say anything, however, as omoikane and kurosu norimune, inarizaki's coach, called for everyone's attention.
"we're going to start with a few sets before our practice match later today. we'll be switching the team members every set so that everyone has a turn to play" kurosu begun to explain, the boys all nodding along to show they were listening. most of the boys were familiar with the way in which things were going to run.
they were quick to split themselves evenly, randomly assigning groups so that they could get on with the matches for the day. after all, they were all eager to get started.
the whistle blew as they the first group moved into position, officially starting the day.
[name] wiped sweat from his brow as they finished yet another set. it had been a couple hours since they started and he was beginning to feel the fatigue. he plopped down to the floor, gulping down his water, frowning when his bottle was empty. he sighed, eyeing the door and deciding whether or not it was worth moving.
a hand appeared in his vision as he glanced back up. his eyes meant miya osamu's, the grey haired twin expectantly raising an eyebrow at him. he held his own water bottle in hand, suna rintarou hovering behind him as they waited. he stared at them in confusion, taking the hand offered anyways and allowing himself to be pulled to his feet.
"thanks" he softly uttered, moving towards the door to find a tap to refill his bottle with. the pair followed behind.
"ya read the court really well" osamu begun the conversation after a few seconds of silence. [name] glanced to his side, briefly squinting his eyes to see whether or not the inarizaki player was being genuine.
he hummed softly, acknowledging the statement. "i like to strategise" he shrugged it off, turning left at the door only to be met with suna standing in front of him.
"taps that way" suna pointed in the other direction, a small amused smile tugging on his lips. [name] felt his face heat up in embarrassment, turning around swiftly and speed walking past them. the pair barely restrained their grins, trailing after him.
"hey, heiwa-kun-" suna went to speak only to be cut off by the said boy.
"it's hirabayashi" he corrected automatically, filling up his water bottle now that they reached the tap. osamu and suna shared a look.
"hirabayashi-kun" he shrugged, "are you always this cold?"
"cold?" he glanced up at him, confused. was he referring to his behaviour? or his tone? had he already ruined any chance of the inarizaki team members liking him? or was it just because he didn't like miya astumu's behaviour?
"stiff?" osamu frowned, trying to think of a better word and scratching his head in thought. "stand-offish, maybe?"
[name] felt horrified, it was like middle school all over again! "what? where did you get that idea? are people talking about me?"
"i guess? you're kinda.. scary" suna thought for a moment before deciding on another word that only sent another pang through the boy.
"scary?" he felt himself wither away, soul leaving his body. "is that why people won't approach me?"
osamu snorted, "you're a really good player, most people find that intimidating. just look at atsumu"
"atsumu's a dick, though" suna deadpanned, "nobody wants to approach him 'cause he's rude"
[name] nodded, agreeing "he's mean" he paused for a second, screwing the lid on his bottle tight. "do i come off as mean?"
"i don't think so, just unapproachable" osamu lifted one shoulder in a half-shrug, unbothered. "hey, where d'ya go to middle school?"
"shiratorizawa middle school, why?"
"how come you didn't go there for high school then?" suna laid an arm on [name]'s head, leaning his weight onto the shorter boy. he huffed, sinking a little with the added weight.
"we moved to osaka so i had to change schools" he shrugged as best he could, unaffected by the change now. they moved back inside, ready to start the final match of the day.
"but you trained with top level players, right?" osamu continued his earlier thought, eyes seemingly digging into [name]'s figure. they were analysing despite the calm, light-hearted nature of the conversation. they were open to being friends but right now they knew in the backs of their minds that they would be enemies on court the minute the whistle blew in a competition. they had already felt the effects of it once.
"sure" [name] nodded, blinking slowly in befuddlement. what was the point of that question? he was obviously searching for a specific answer. "and i'm training with top level players now. what difference does it make?"
osamu merely stared at him for a moment longer in a brief silence before he and suna split from his side to head back to their team.
weird. [name] frowned slightly.
"-and then turnip-head was all geh!” hinata’s rambles were always weird, an experience [name] always looked forward to. he always brightened up his day. this time he was going on about his recent practice match with aoba johsai and karasuno's victory over miyagi prefecture's top 4 team.
from his description of the events that had happened, [name] found it easy to assume that most of seijoh's power relied on their setter, oikawa tooru. he hadn't seen much of the male after he graduated middle school but he had heard word of wakatoshi's constant taunts (not that he knew he was taunting or of the effect it had on oikawa).
”i’m a little surprised you won” hinata’s indignant screech made him immediately rethink his wording. “i mean that aoba johsai is one of the best in the miyagi prefecture for a reason. to win in your first match against them.. you did a good job even if it was a practice match”
the line was silent for a moment, a little awkward. hinata breathing quickened slightly through the speaker before he was bursting with energy once again. “anyways! we've got a new player too now, nish-nishi-nishiya i don't know how to say it but he's a libero like you!"
[name] smiled, ready to tease him. "don't move on, i haven't replaced you"
"aH! i'm not replacing you!" hinata whined. "i can't even say his name! besides, you'll always be my first libero and i'm not going to stop until we beat you!"
this time the silence was a quiet acknowledgement of how far the pair had come since they first met. while [name] had always had an obvious talent for the sport, hinata was a little more clumsy. they complimented each other perfectly, hinata with his innate physical abilities and [name] with his technique. they would make a powerful team one day.
but first, they needed to battle it out on court, after all, they had to see who would win.
bonus!!
"we'll need to get karasuno's guardian deity back" daichi hit his fist against his hand, determined look on his face as the team turned to exit aoba johsai again, brushing off the interruption from oikawa. they were proud of their efforts and the win in the practice match but they knew they had an incomplete team just yet.
"guardian deity?" hinata's face lit up, beaming at the sound of the cool name.
"our libero" tanaka grinned, laughing loudly at the thought of nishinoya returning. "his suspension should almost be over by now"
"libero?" the team turned to the orange-haired first year, ready to explain what a libero is until he continued. "the libero always gets a cool name. like heiwa-kun!"
"you know of heiwa-kun?" kageyama was the first to question him, remembering the times he played against [name] not too long ago. they hadn't expected hinata to know of anyone other than the little giant, especially seeing as he did have a wide range of knowledge in the sport, only really interested in being the ace.
"he's my best friend!" hinata grinned proudly, thumb pointing to his chest in a victorious stance. "he goes to a school in osaka now though.."
"your best friend..?" the team stared dumbfounded, minds blanking out as hinata continued on a tangent, admiration for hirabayashi [name] obvious in the way he spoke.
"yeah! we're gonna go to nationals and play him!" while the sentiment was nice, daichi and sugawara couldn't help but sweatdrop, sharing a look. they were not on a national level just yet.
"one day.. i'm gonna beat him!" hinata's eyes narrowed in determination, grin wide with excitement.
one day..

🎡 DAIYA NO ACE & READER:  AMUSEMENT PARK EDITION !
Tumblr media
you're going to your local carnival together - so what sort of activities will your date be filled with?
Tumblr media
‎‎
Tumblr media
R O L L E R C O A S T E R S
these adventurous boys are all about thrill and excitement (even if it may not show outwardly for some of them at first!), and you can't help but get caught up in it. whether you're screaming your lungs out or perfectly calm on a roller coaster, he'll be holding your hand the entire time. when they show your pictures at the end, he'll get a copy and keep it as his wallpaper before he finds another fun ride for you to take on together.
➤ umemiya seiichi, kuramochi yoichi, isashiki jun, shirasu kenjiro
Tumblr media
C A R N I V A L G A M E S
guess who'll be that one person carrying around a pile of giant stuffed animals all over the park? that's right - you (of course, he'll offer to carry them all once he's done winning all the games). he's determined to show off in front of you despite the fact that the games are rigged, and whether or not he's a pitcher, you bet he'll want to try knocking down those milk bottles. he'll spoil you with all the cotton candy and treats you want as you take in the bright lights and excitement of the crowd with him by your side.
➤ narumiya mei, furuya satoru, yuki tetsuya, maki yosuke
Tumblr media
F E R R I S W H E E L
what's better than a scenic view with your date? a view high up in the air, of course - this classic romantic ride won't get your heart racing from adrenaline, but from the intimacy of being so close with your carnival date. he'll hold your hand and point things out with the other - the setting sun and stars twinkling into view; the neon lights of the stalls below; the way the fireflies flicker in the shadows of trees. he watches you as you stare in awe at the sights, leaning forward slightly and mouth agape. and cliché as it is, he can't see anything out there more beautiful than you.
➤ shirakawa katsuyuki, kominato haruichi, kawakami norifumi, takigawa chris yu, matsubara nao
Tumblr media
B O U N C Y C A S T L E
your date knows how to have fun and live life to the fullest. a bouncy castle is the perfect excuse to tease you - when you fall, he'll keep jumping higher as your lungs fill with laughter and he eventually helps you up, promising to hold you and not let you fall again. any inflatable ride? you're on that - zipping down the giant slide holding hands, racing each other on the obstacle course - touchy as a pair of young lovers who can't keep their hands off each other. you'll cool off with some colourful slushies or soda floats, and he'll get you the cutest little balloon animal to top off such a perfect day.
➤ todoroki raichi, hideaki tojo, nagao akira, sawamura eijun, kanemaru shinji
Tumblr media
W A T E R R I D E S
your date is a bit more unpredictable - what's next? the splashing log ride? the tunnel of love? a paddleboat or lazy river? there's something about being by the water with you that he can't resist. first, something cooperative - you'll be paddling together, maybe some friendly bickering depending on the guy, but you're sure to have a lot of laughs along the way. next, something to get your adrenaline up - the log flume where you both get soaked and sit a bit in the sun to dry off. and last, an easygoing boat ride, where he looks deeply into your eyes and tells you what an amazing time he's had with you.
➤ kamiya carlos toshiki, amahisa kosei, miyuki kazuya, okumura koshu, masamune hongo
Tumblr media
B U M P E R C A R S
get ready for a bit of friendly competition with this one - he'll be the one that rams into you every chance he gets, but absolutely terrorize anyone else who thinks they can bump into you. you'll have fun spinning around and trying to catch him by surprise, but he's always looking for you among the loud screams and chaotic cars. when the ride powers down, he's there right away, helping you out and catching you when you trip and lean a little too far into his chest. while waiting in line, he'll make playful bets like who most people are gonna target that round, and he might even sneak in a quick kiss on your cheek before you get in the car...
➤ sanada shunpei, watanabe hisashi, kominato ryosuke, yuki masashi, harada masatoshi
Tumblr media
hi friends, hope you enjoyed this one! let me know what you'd be doing and with which character! once again, let me know if i missed anyone that you wanna see... though i added a few more. this is a bit of a short one, but just tryna warm up my writing again!

Learning to Live
Tumblr media
I’m not going to question the logistics of working at a bread factory and paying two rents. I mean, he said he would pay her rent. Is he paying? Does it matter? Oh well…
Tumblr media
Finally, snow that symbolizes spiritual awakening and cleansing! Yay! 👏 ❄️
Tumblr media
I love these three panels! I wish we could get three chapters on this issue alone, but I’m very happy we got these three panels! 🎉 🎉 🎉 🥳 🥳 🥳 🍾 🥂
Tumblr media
In 140 chapters, this is my favorite image! It doesn’t take kickass art for me anymore; this is enough to warm my cold, cold heart! I hope he’s reading Tom Sawyer, ‘cause Mark Twain is a helluva life coach. #HumanCondition
Tumblr media
These clouds are bad omens, and a sign for me to curb my enthusiasm. But I don’t care, I’ll just enjoy this chapter! Hooray for the end of low-level alcoholism and suicide thoughts!  🥳
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bye, Shigeru. Don’t come back! Are we supposed to believe that his aunt is dead? That’s a real shame, because her son wrote a suicide letter that Seiichi should really get to read.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s not too late for you to throw away that SIM card and flee. I still have that ticket.
The only reason this chapter feels a little underwhelming is because we spent 139 chapters watching this kid being tortured, basically, and a single chapter magically rescuing him from all his trauma. That’s pretty much the highest level of cheating the audience. Shūzō Oshimi should’ve learned his lesson from all the nonsense he pulled in Aku no Hana, but he didn’t.
105 chapters of this manga cover less than 365 days in Seiichi’s life, but chapter 140 covers over one full year. Why is the author in such a hurry now? Does he think watching the recovery is irrelevant? I don't get it... That’s not fair. That’s not to say that I need 140 chapters of ‘Seiichi walks into a psychiatrist’s office and talks about his life’ but this whole 'magically getting better on his own from all the trauma' is definitely cheating the audience. 💢
That's to say nothing of the major questions still hunting this manga and his character. Why did Seiko try to kill her son? Why didn't she kill her son after the first attempt? We still don't know that. Seiichi never got an answer. Did he forgive his mother or did he just shrug and decide to move on with his life? We don't know because he won't tell us. Shūzō Oshimi is the Marcel Proust of draftsmanship, but Seiichi is definitely not the Marcel Proust of narration. Too bad for us.  ☹️
This latest chapter gives credence to the C-PTSD diagnosis, but the fact that Seiichi barely thinks or talks still makes me wonder if Schizophrenia doesn't fit better...  🤔

Yes Seiichi, I'm absolutely sure. You are a very attractive individual and your weight does not detract from that in the slightest. In fact I'd argue it adds onto it in certain ways, especially with how you manage to carry yourself with it. Figuratively speaking. If you don't believe me then that's your decision, but you won't be able to convince me otherwise.
Tumblr media
“N-n-no! I didn’t have any intention o-of attempting to c-change your mind… I-I’m not sure how to r-respond to all of that…”
She’s blinking back warm tears, those heartfelt words struck a chord deep within her anxious spirit. It did put some fears to rest, such as her presentation and how she perceives her own reflection.
Her posture shifted from timid to exuding a level of genuine confidence, holding her head up to maintain eye contact. Her shoulders and stomach rise and fall as she inhaled deeply, giving her a reprieve to formulate her words.
“T-thank you… M-mister…”

Comet Nishimura is brightening and moving fast: See it now!
Tumblr media
It’s already been a good year for comets — and it just got astronomically better. A newly discovered comet is poised to wow us in the coming week: Comet C/2023 P1 (Nishimura). It’s already readily visible and the best views are just days away.
Japanese amateur astronomer Hideo Nishimura discovered the new comet August 12 near the star Zeta (ζ) Geminorum in Gemini the Twins, according to Seiichi Yoshida’s page on the object. At that time, the comet was already magnitude 10.4 and closing in on the Sun at a distance of just 1 astronomical unit, or AU (1 AU is the average Earth-Sun distance). Nishimura is continuing into the inner solar system on its way toward perihelion, the closest point in its orbit to the Sun. It will reach that point in less than two weeks, on September 17, when it will swing around our star at a distance of just 0.23 AU — some 40 percent closer to the Sun than the planet Mercury.
Along the way, Nishimura is expected to brighten rapidly, potentially reaching magnitude 2. Although that should be an easy naked-eye magnitude, the comet’s low altitude in the Northern Hemisphere means it’s really best seen with binoculars or a telescope. But through those optics, it will dazzle. Keep reading to learn where it is now, when to view it, and what to look for.
How to see Comet Nishimura
Comet Nishimura is now visible in the predawn skies for Northern Hemisphere observers. It’s rising later each morning as it tracks quickly through the stars of Leo the Lion. On September 7, it will rise around 4:20 A.M. local daylight time. By Sunday morning (the 10th), it will rise around 5 A.M. local daylight time. This is because the comet is rapidly approaching the Sun, so it appears to be moving quickly through our sky. By perihelion, it will rise with the Sun and won’t be visible at all (or again) above the equator.
Tumblr media
What this means is now is the time to see it!

“do you want help with that?” - takashi to seiichi
Tumblr media
It was hard to hold up a mirror as well as hold his hair back and put his horn accessories into place all at the same time -- especially with what little light was provided where Hiromi had parked the car.
Normally, he would have used a headband to hold his hair back, and the bathroom vanity mirror to give himself light and an easy way to see everything he was doing. Tonight, he'd lost track of time working on a project for school, and had to rush out the door to get to S on time.
"Uh..." Seiichi glanced up, gripping the pros-aide applicator between his teeth. He could only imagine what a mess he looked like. Sheepishly, he set down his mirror and adhesive, offering a shy smile. "Yeah, actually. I don't have enough hands to be doing this on the hood of a car, and I'm trying to finish fast so I can at least catch the end of dad's race."

𝕚 𝕥𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕜 𝕪𝕠𝕦'𝕣𝕖 𝕣𝕖𝕒𝕝𝕝𝕪 𝕔𝕠𝕠𝕝 | 008.
haikyuu x m!reader
masterlist
"so you got kicked out?" [name] sighed heavily into the phone. despite the absurdity of the situation he can't say he was entirely surprised.
hinata whined, trying to deny it. "no! we just have to work together to get in! the captain is scary but we can do it"
"so you got kicked out?" [name] raised an eyebrow, sidestepping a few other students as he made his own way home after his own volleyball practice.
hinata's silence was enough of an answer. "we're going to practice right now! you'll see! we'll beat you"
he felt his chest swell with pride and arrogance. he was happy for hinata, he always would be but he would never put his team down. they weren't going to be beaten. he felt the evil smile on his face as he cheered hinata on, "ganbare!"
the complaint he heard in response made him pull his phone away from his ear, earning weird looks from other students at the shrieking. he bowed his head in response, ignoring them and turning down a separate corridor.
"when you say 'we', are you talking about kageyama-kun?" he changed the conversation in order to draw hinata's attention away from his taunt. hinata hummed in confirmation. [name] paused, thinking back to the events of last year's middle school tournament. he hadn't been there in person, having his own school commitments but satori and eita had told him all about kageyama's fall from the top. in short, it was not gracious at all.
the h/c haired libero felt bad for him but he wasn't sure he would be able to deal with a player like him either. still, to have your dreams crushed like that so quickly.. he couldn't imagine. he shook his head, remembering that he was still talking to hinata.
"i heard about his game last year, is he doing okay?"
hinata's response almost made him snort, "i don't know about that but he's a real broody guy!"
"i'm sure he is" he nodded along to the first year's rant about the black haired teen. it wasn't long, however, before he was interrupted by the said boy. [name] could hear his voice cut through hinata's excited tangent.
"hey boke, who are you talking to you? you need to be practicing"
the volume of their voices wavered as he seemed to be shaking his phone. "we just got here!"
"and we're already wasting time!"
"sorry [name]-kun! i have to go! i'll text you later" hinata spoke quickly, words stringing together and almost incomprehensible. he heard the last remnants of an argument happening before he was hung up on.
"bye shoyo" he rolled his eyes to the blank screen, shoving his phone back into his pocket, hands burying into them as he sulkily walked home.
a small smile graced his face at the thought of meeting hinata at nationals. he'd love to see his friend reach the top but he'd have to get past him first.
"first things first" seiichi clasped his hands together, cheerfully standing tall in front of the official team. they had gained three first years who fiddled nervously to the side. "proper introductions are in order"
"get in line, seiichi-senpai" [name] came up behind him, slapping him square in the back. the smile on his face silenced all arguments from the dark brown haired ace. "just because taicho is away today doesn't mean you're in charge"
he spluttered, beginning to protest as he got in line regardless. "i'm the oldest! and why does that make you in charge?"
"because he's vice-captain, dummy" susumu grinned slyly from beside him. yuuma cringed, leaning away from his other side as seiichi swung his arms around in his fit.
[name] frowned, eyes landing on the nervous first years. the three were glued to each others sides, unsure of what to do with the commotion. the boy glanced at coach omoikane who merely stood offside, watching the chaos unfold with a slightly amused smile.
he tended to encourage the boys to lead themselves most of the time. he was a good coach, always ready to step in but it was the point of having the captain duo. the best team needed captains they could trust in, rely on. that was why they, themselves, passed the baton on each year.
-
"me?" [name] froze, not moving an inch from his place in the line-up. every year the third years would have a send off, it was takumashii tradition as omoikane had excitedly informed them. at the send off the team's captain and vice-captain would name there successor of sorts.
takumi had handed his captain jersey over to kousei, as expected. the tradition included picking a vice-captain who would then become captain in their third year.
but [name] didn't think it was going to be him. kousei smiled softly at his surprise, patiently waiting with his jersey held in the h/c haired boy's direction. yuichi and jun grinned at each other, hands landing heavily on the short boy's back, shoving him forwards.
"take the jersey, heiwa-kun!" itsuki hollered, a large smile on his face. the team had been in on this, he realised, frowning as he gingerly took the jersey into his hands.
"are you sure?" [name] glanced up to their smiling faces. "i'm not allowed to be captain"
it was true, as a libero he wasn't allowed to captain a team. takumi reached over to ruffle his hair, "that doesn't mean you can't be vice-captain, we pick that"
[name]'s eyes widened, stinging slightly as he quickly blinked away the tears. even with the harsh loss they had taken earlier in the year they still trusted in him to lead the team.
his fingers clutched the shirt closely to his chest. the team could see the way he buzzed with energy as he stepped up beside kousei, ready for all to come.
-
"seiichi-senpai, as annoying as he is, is right. we should introduce ourselves" [name]'s mouth twitched slightly in amusement as the said ace kicked up a fuss again.
yuuma rolled his eyes, elbowing seiichi in the stomach, "you're going to scare off the first years, boke"
"so rude" seiichi mumbled, rubbing his side, eyeing yuuma disdainfully. the blonde boy snickered, a slight smirk on his face at the ace's pain.
"behave" [name] sent them his best hardened stare, immediately they stood straighter, shutting up. "alright, as we were saying; welcome" he turned to the first years, expression not really changing much as he gestured to them with his hands. "we've tested your skills so today we'll get you used to our usual training schedule. introduce yourselves and your position"
"oh um! i'm matsuura eiji and i'm a middle blocker" the black haired boy grinned, obviously buzzing with excitement as he shifted from foot to foot.
the tallest boy fiddled with his fingers, nervously stuttering out his introduction, "i'm um.. my name is higashi rin and i also play as a middle blocker"
the last boy, the shortest of the three spoke softly, almost unheard as his brown bangs dropped over his eyes, "ikehara tomio, i'm a setter"
[name] nodded contently, they were going to be a great addition to the group once they were used to how the team functioned. he lead the team in beginning warm ups before they split in smaller groups to practice receives. takumashii saw it as highly important that the whole team learnt from each other. they created many allrounders over the years but everyone still had their own skills.
the team worked best when everyone could work together seamlessly. that's why they practiced together. omoikane hummed, pleased as he watched [name] lead the first years through proper receives while the others set up their other drills. he was a great teacher and an even better leader, he just didn't know it yet.
"you wouldn't believe this guy!" hinata's energy radiated through the phone, his obvious stomping visible despite not being able to see him. [name] felt amusement creep into his expression, hinata always had that affect on him.
[name] listened quietly, shuffling around the changeroom to pack up his things. he was always the last one in the club rooms, always staying later to work on something the team tried to reassure him was already perfect. it never worked. he slid his shoes into the bag, school uniform going in next.
hinata went on to rant about how rude this 'tsukishima' person was. at least, he thought he was trying to say tsukishima, hinata wasn't very clear on his name. he then complained about kageyama and how grumpy he always seemed. [name] just smiled softly, the small turn of his lips fond as hinata talked. he missed his best friend sometimes.
"you know that underestimation is good for you, right?" [name] interrupted when hinata whined again about the lack of belief in his abilities. "it means they won't expect you to play well, then you just have to prove them wrong"
"i know" hinata deflated, a huff of air loud over the phone speaker. "i just want to be good like you! i could beat anyone!"
[name] ignored the heat lighting up his face, chewing on his lip. "you'll get there, there's steps before that, shoyo-kun"
"i know that too"
"good, then you're already on track" [name] laughed softly, immediately improving hinata's mood. "when we meet at nationals i better see some good receives though" or not.
"aghhhh why?" hinata loudly complained, a touchy subject [name] knew would set him off. he swung his bag over his head, pulling the club room keys out of his pocket to lock the door behind him.
"because" [name] begun over the groaning, "you have to have a good foundation otherwise you're attacks are going to mean nothing. that's why the libero is so important, they're there for the team so that you can hit the ball again and again"
hinata went silent for a moment, calming in his best friend's presence. they took a moment to just listen to the other breath before [name] softly spoke up again. "your match is tomorrow morning, right?"
"yeah" hinata's voice was much lower in volume, reminding the libero of the times they would lay on hinata's floor just dreaming of the future, quietly sharing little stories into the late hours of the night.
"show them what you've got and you'll be fine. you're team is there to teach you everything else you need to know" he hummed gently, unsure of what else to say but good luck. he knew hinata would be fine either way, kageyama couldn't afford to lose this match either.
hinata only made a small noise of acknowledgement before excitedly beginning to talk [name]'s ear off about the senpai he had met so far. it was refreshing to hear how well he was doing despite the mishap. hinata always had a way to find the good in a situation. [name] just hoped he kept up the optimism. for now, though, he would enjoy the moment.
he was going to be fine, [name] nodded to himself, his body relaxing in relief. they both were.
"hirabayashi-senpai?" [name] stood from the dive he just made, sending the ball across the court to kousei's usual spot. he raised an eyebrow at the first year boy who shuffled slightly under his gaze. ikehara tomio had caught [name]'s eye immediately as he played. the boy reminded him specifically of a younger kageyama, the nervous energy and striking talent for the sport making him stand out amongst the team.
"yes, ikehara-kun?" he lead the pair away from where they were playing drills.
"koizumi-senpai mentioned that you would be the best person to ask about strategy and i was wondering if you could help me" he stumbled slightly over his words, fingers twiddling and eyes flittering around the room.
it had become immediately apparent that the vice-captain scared the first years as the weeks went on. it was a little disappointing as [name] had wanted them to feel comfortable around him but kousei reminded him he needed to give them time to loosen up and get used to him.
he felt himself fill with pride at the thought that tomio was coming to him for advice. "sure" he nodded, a little too easygoing as he couldn't contain his excitement to teach something he was so passionate about, "what is it you want me to help with exactly?"
"um, i want to be able to read the court like you do" the blonde boy begun, eyes shining with determination, "i want to predict the other teams moves"
[name] hummed, thinking over ways to help him out, "it's more a reflex but we can work on it. we'll start with watching the team, okay?"
tomio's eyes lit up at the confirmation. [name] held back the urge to hug the boy, knowing it would be a little weird. his heart sped up, overly excited to help his team improve. they were his passion, his yearning to see them succeed, to help them succeed only growing stronger the more they were together.
they were going to be amazing.
the team joined up again at the end of their training session, ready for their last announcements before they headed home for the night
"this year we're going try some new strategies to build up our team" omoikane begun, kousei nodding beside him. the rest of the team were standing in front of them, awaiting the news. "that's why we're going to be organising regular practice matches and training sessions with our fellow national-level school, inarizaki"
the team held back their laughter at the look on their vice-captains face, hands raising to cover their mouths, forcing down smiles. they had all heard the stories of his run-in with inarizaki's setter last year. the h/c haired boy held a deadpan expression, gaze almost dead looking at the news.
"what?"
