Relistening--Pilot

Of all the episodes of WTNV, I think I've listened to this one the most. I remember back during high school I used to listen to it a lot in order to sleep at night. I dunno if I was tricking myself, but I definetly felt a little sleepy listening to this.

What struck me most listening to this episode was how monotoned Cecil's voice and personality was. Having listened up to Year Five and knowing Cecil as the goofy, oversharing and emotional person he becomes as his character progresses, it was strange hearing this version of him.

This Cecil wears a suit and tie. Future Cecil wears the wonderful and bizzare outfits we now know he wears. Does that make sense?

The same can actually be said for Carlos, as he's set up as a somewhat realistic scientist. Someone who is here to explore the weirdness from a point of view that's similar to our world. If Night Vale were a standard show, Carlos would be the protagonist who saves the day whenever weird stuff threatens the people of Night Vale. If I remember correctly, this continues to be the case until Dylan Marron took over as his voice actor.

The whole episode felt a lot more grounded, which is weird to say about a lovecraftian horror. The weirdness was all very approachable when compared to the stuff that comes later, like the Beagle Puppy (good boy). It makes the episode a nice little taster of what's to come.

It was also fun seeing things, like the Underground City, Dog Park, and Desert Bluffs, which all end up playing a big role in future Years.
