I'm very busy, I learned how to sew this year and decided to make everyone's gifts.. and I also have to wrap said gifts. I only have 1 more gift to make. And 4 more days to do it! Aaa!!

THEATRE:HOME - 2:150 (thanks pandemic)

I usually separate out docs and fiction, but I watched almost no documentaries this year (with the exception of Dick Johnston). Reality is real enough.

TV Series

01 - BoJack Horseman (final season) - Pretty damned poignant finish to the show, replete with actual consequences for our reformed bad boy protagonist (which is more than you can say for most antiheroes of Peak TV).

02 - *Hello Ladies - I enjoy the pure awkwardness of seeing Stephen Merchant try to perform being a Regular Person, but ultimately this show tips him too far towards a nasty, Ricky Gervais-lite sort of persona. Perhaps he was always best as a cameo appearance, or lip synching with wild eyes while Chrissy Teigen giggles?

03 - Olive Kittredge - a rough watch by times. I read the book as well, later in the year. Frances Mcdormand was the best, possibly the only, casting option for the flinty lead. One episode tips into thriller territory, which is a shock.

04 - *The Wire S3, S4, S5 - lockdown culture! It was interesting to rewatch this, then a few months later go through an enormous, culture-level reappraisal of cop-centred narratives.

05 - Forever - a Maya Rudolph/Fred Armisen joint that coasts on the charm of its leads. The premise is OK, but I wasn’t left wanting any more at the end.

06 - *Catastrophe - a rewatch when my partner decided he wanted to see it, too!

07 - Red Oak - resolutely “OK” steaming dramedy, relied heavily on some pretty obvious cues to get across its 1980s setting.

08 - Little Fires Everywhere - gulped this one down while in 14-day isolation, delicious! Every 90s suburban mom had that SUV, but not all of them had the requisite **secrets**

09 - The Great - fun historical comedy/drama! Costumes: lush. Actors: amusing. Race-blind casting: refreshing!

10 - The Crown S4 - this is the season everyone lost their everloving shit for, since it’s finally recent enough history that a fair chunk of the viewing audience is liable to recall it happening.

11 - Ted Lasso - we resisted this one for a while (thought I did enjoy the ad campaign for NBC sports (!!) that it was based on). My view is that its best point was the comfort that the men on the show have (or develop, throughout the season) with the acknowledgement and sharing of their own feelings. Masculinity redux.

12 - Moonbase 8 - Goodnatured in a way that makes you certain they will be crushed.

13 - The Good Lord Bird - Ethan Hawke is really aging into the character actor we always hoped he would be!

14 - Hollywood - frothy wish-fulfillment alternate history. I think the show would have been improved immeasurably by skipping the final episode.

lil update 💗

hey beautiful people! it’s been a while since i’ve really properly been on here and spent time with you guys so i wanted to just update you on what’s been happening!

in november, i finished my last uni exams ever (yay!!!!) and got 2 HD’s and 1 distinction and felt so incredibly proud and ecstatic to end my uni life on such a high! then i went straight onto my first big placement overseas to the Maldives with my uni pals and I experienced sooooo many beautiful things and met so many beautiful people from the local community there! it really was one of the best, most rewarding experiences of my entire life! we were there for 3 weeks and i loved every single moment.

then i was home for xmas and nye and i had the time of my LIFE because i knew this would be my last family xmas/nye for a while considering i’m moving to london in july!!! there was lots of drinking and lots of (un)forgettable memories 🤪

in the new year, i then flew to vietnam for 10 days to volunteer as part of a swim teaching/drowning prevention clinic to the local community by the Mekong River! I knew no one going over and ended up meeting 20 of the BEST people from Perth on the trip and once again just had the most unforgettable, rewarding, and truly phenomenal experience being in such a beautiful country that was so vastly different to anything I’ve ever experienced before!

Last week I turned 23 and spent it with some of my favourite gals ever ever ever in a house up north and I couldn’t even tell you how special it was to reunite with those I haven’t seen in 14 months and those who flew across the entire fkn country for me!!!! I felt so loved and so grateful and so so so happy 💗

I feel so incredibly happy with life right now and I start my final placement early March til July which I’m nervous but extremely excited and passionate about! And then I fly to London to move indefinitely and to go to the Taylor fest AND celebrate my graduation over there with my favourite people!!!

I am also going to NZ next weekend with my best friend and we are so excited to go off the grid and just live in the present!

Then in April we are going to Japan as a family and I could not be more excited for cherry blossom season if I tried 🌸🌸🌸

Life is looking up and I’m loving every single minute of it 💫

Oh, and there’s kind of a boy in the picture atm who has, to date, waited for me for 2 entire months because I’ve been so busy and we haven’t had any time to actually hang out, but I already know he’s a good one and I’m just excited to just do this day by day and see if anything eventuates ✨

here’s to a year of wild adventures and the most precious moments 🌟

“Here!”

Severus jerked back, before looking up from The Daily Prophet at the gift bag that Harry was holding at arm’s length.

“What do you have there?” Severus asked eyebrow arched.

Harry whined and bounced on the balls of his feet. “Just open it!”

Severus heaved a sigh, put down the paper and took the bag from Harry. Giving Harry a shrewd look he opened the bag and removed the glitter tissue paper; and shot Harry a glare as glitter erupted all over the table from said tissue paper. Harry gave a big innocent grin, arms behind his back and swinging side to side.

Severus reached into the bag again and brought out a black piece of fabric. Shaking it released more glitter to Severus’ annoyance. Unravelling the fabric, he found it to be a t-shirt with the phrase ‘TOL GAY’ written in white on the front.

Looking up at Harry he saw that Harry had opened the hoodie he was wearing to show a Cropped white t-shirt with the words ‘SMOL GAY’ emblazoned in pink glitter.

“No”

“Awwwwwww. Come on Sev!! PLEASE!!” Harry gave his most irresistible puppy dog face full force, hands now clasped in front and leaning forward.

Again, Severus sighed, expression morphing from defiant to reluctantly fond.

“Fine. But…”

“EEEEEEEE” Harry pounced.

They never got rid of the glitter.

Saw this and couldn't help picturing Severus wearing this with a frown and sunglasses, and Harry hanging of his arm, smile as wide as his face.

WHY?!

Severus was sat at his computer, answering emails from his various clients, when he was interrupted by a shout from the kitchen. Knowing that Harry was baking he leapt to his feet and rushed from the room. From the doorway he could see Harry hunched over the counter, with his hands clenched by his temples.

“Love what’s wrong?” Severus rushed over to the younger man’s side and placed his hands on his shoulders, checking him over for any signs of injury.

“Why? It’s only November!” Harry whispered in frustration, his eyes starting to tear up.

Severus sighed in disbelief at the idiot in his arms. “All this fuss over Christmas songs!” Severus tried very hard not to growl, unable to unclench his teeth.

“Fuss? FUSS?!” Harry laughed hysterically, “It’s NOVEMBER, Severus, November! Christmas doesn’t start til I open my advent calendar! If I can’t open my chocolate early, Then songs can’t start early!” Harry realised that he was whining like a child now, stomping included, but he didn’t care. The stupid songs were now in his head, and wouldn’t leave. He had even started humming ‘Christmas Time’ while he was baking brownies. Brownies! Was nothing sacred anymore?!

Severus pinched the bridge of his nose, already tired. ‘My husband is such a child sometimes!’

He brought the frustrated man into his arms and started to sway, while humming under his breath.

“UGH!”

“What?” Severus asked confused.

“You’re doing it now!” Harry nearly shouted, slightly muffled by Severus’ chest.

“Doing what?”

“CHRISTMAS SONGS!” Harry wailed to the ceiling before bursting into hysterical laughter again.

Severus huffed. ‘Stupid Potter, I did nothing wrong, I’m the one who should be storming out upset, not him, but noooo, it has to be all about Harry.’

Severus shifted in his seat, where he was trying to read a book and pretend that he’s not waiting for Harry to come home from where, he undoubtedly went to rant and rave at the Weasleys, about how Severus was such an inconsiderate arse.

Not a moment later, Severus heard the floo from the greeting room activate and somebody come stumbling out. Severus heard quiet mutterings moving closer to where he sat in the living room, until minutes later a small-ish figure was climbing into his lap, snuggling close, and pushing his face deep into the crook of his neck. Severus opened his mouth to ask, ‘what the man was doing?’ When Harry beat him to it with a quick, “Don’t get any ideas, I’m still mad at you.”

Severus sighed and pulled the younger man closer and breathed in his strawberry shampoo, before saying “Yes love.” And pressed a kiss on the top of his husband’s head, placing his book aside, while resting his cheek on Harry’s head and closing his eyes.

He picked up his quill, and made a note in the margins, muttering under his breath about idiots.

“No.” Severus said casually, “Stop that.”

“You know the rules. No scratching the furniture. If you want attention, ask properly.”

Yowl

A little black kitten popped its head out from under the sofa, and let out the most adorably confused mew?

Severus looked down at the little terror. Then patted the sofa cushion beside him.

The kitten brightened considerably, jumped onto the sofa cushion, padded up to Severus, and proceeded to climb into his lap and curl up into a ball.

Severus tip his head back and let out an exhausted sigh.

“Harry. No.”

Harry looked up at Severus, eyes round and teary, then let out a mew.

“Fine.” Severus released an indulgent sigh, and suck his fingers into the kitten’s fur.

since then til this day, we don’t go on fancy dates, do scuba diving, or anything wild. we love to eat and walk, and that’s probably why we fell in love with beppu, and with each other. for us a perfect date would be us strolling around town, going to onsen, then getting sushi or ramen (yum!), walking back home and falling asleep watching a movie together. we walked everywhere in beppu, we walked the streets of oita, fukuoka, tokyo, seoul, danang, saigon, hue, hoian, honolulu, toronto, taos and albuquerque. i still remember how much we walked in seoul, our legs were shaking like crazy, but papa would carry me on his back and that, son, is the power of love haha. that’s probably the exhausting list of all the places we’ve been to. we’re not adventurous. we’re a bit weird, a bit awkward. but we get along with each other’s family and friends, and with each other. the first six years together we were in a long distance, miles and miles of oceans between us. when papa left japan just four months after we started dating, we had agreed that we would stay in touch, but part of me didn’t believe that we would. when we said goodbye in the airport, i went home without him for the first time since we went out. i cried my eyes out on the train, and that was just the beginning of many tearful airport goodbyes. in 2016, he proposed to me on xmas night in my home in danang, and the next morning asked my parents for their blessing. your grandparents were so super happy that they would jump around if they could. papa remembered that your grandpa was playing “happy new year” on the saxophone over and over. your papa didn’t have a job then when he asked me to marry him, but shortly after that he did. but while he was job searching, i was like, why don’t you go work for pet smart while applying for other places? if he had listened to my terrible advice, papa would be bathing dogs for a living, instead of developing softwares haha. not that there’s anything wrong with bathing dogs, it’s just he might not be fulfilling his potential and possible helping us with ours as well. in 2019, we were in hawaii visiting your paternal grandparents. we were living the japan life again, plus the awesome beaches, hula dances and sunsets. and i believe that’s where you started, so we named you koa, after an hawaiian tree that’s so beautiful. upon coming back, we were headed for canada to see your uncle. even when you were just a tiny little fetus you were with us in the heat of hawaii and the cold of toronto in february. how i wish we could freely go places like before, but now with you next to us. it will be soon, i’m sure. here’s a picture of all three of us going hiking, i pointed at you inside my belly. you are the fruition of our love, the start of our lives as a family. papa and mama met in japan in autumn 2011, went out spring 2012, got married summer 2018, had you in september 2019. the motto of the story is, go ahead and send that text. you just never know!
