thinking abt stacker pentecost feeling his drift partner die in his mind and then somehow, somehow carrying on, standing alone when no one had ever done that before, burning as the radiation threatened to consume his mind and body. thinking about pentecost winning that impossible fight and stumbling out of the corpse of his jaeger - skin smoking and body screaming and mind gaping from the loss of his partner, looking out at a battlefield of gray and blood and emptiness, of death and metal and alien flesh and then out from it all stepping a little girl, just a tiny girl clutching her shoe like her bleeding heart in her hand, staring up at him with an awe that strikes him deeper than the radiation ever could. she smiles at him like he is the sun, like he is her messiah, and in that moment, he feels his breath start in his chest again. through her he remembers what he is doing this for, who he is suffering for. through her he finds the beauty of humanity, the goodness in every person he is fighting to protect. he goes down to her, his mind and body burning, and he carries her home. she carries her shoe, and he carries her. both of them hold their hearts in their hands.

alrightalrightalright what about an au where newly knighted obi-wan kenobi is working as a jedi on a hugely top secret project in the middle of nowhere, outer rim, with a very small amount of help from the jedi order and strict instructions to not let anyone know what he's doing - and one night he gets involved in something he has no business getting involved in but this is obi-wan, after all, he never can leave well enough alone. he's trying to bust and rescue a slave ring he uncovers (again, completely on accident, he just took a night off for a drink)

and he decides to go undercover himself to get back to where the (pleasure) slaves are being held so he can set about freeing them, but before he's done, smuggler anakin skywalker bursts in and rushes all of them onto his ship to get them away, taking well-meaning but solidly jedi obi-wan with him

but obi-wan IS under strict orders to not disclose anything about himself or why he was on the planet because this is a super secret jedi project....and anakin thinks he just rescued him from slavery, so it's not like he can just politely ask to be dropped back off roughly around the location he was picked up

and the longer they fly about the galaxy, the more obi-wan is hesitant to return at all. not that he has issues with the order or anything. not that he doesn't feel extremely uncomfortable lying to anakin about his past when anakin is being very kind and understanding and opening up about his own past as a slave....

but despite his duty to the order to return to that planet, despite the guilt he feels when he cannot be as honest with anakin as the smuggler is with him....he sorta...he sorta really likes the other man. he likes the type of freedom he's showing him. he likes the miniature missions they send themselves on. he especially likes the way he catches anakin looking at him sometimes from the pilot's seat, as if he's the biggest, most precious, most unexpected gift he has ever received

Am I (35m) the asshole for leaving VERY IMPORTANT organs on my partner’s (36m) side of the lab? Okay, for context, I’m a xenobiologist, he’s a mathematician, (can I make it any more obvious?) and we’re trying to figure out how to stop the apocalypse but I can’t do that if I gotta keep 15 million metric tons of kaiju bits and pieces contained to HALF of a lab! All he needs is that massive ass chalk board which I don’t even mess with! hermann thoughts: if i discredit newton and his approach enough, the martial won't give him the equipment for his kaiju drift, and i can protect him from himself. if he despises me for it, so be it. there is little i wouldn't sacrifice to see him safe.

newt thoughts: this is a Best Science competition and i have to Win

#unscientific aside #newmann #pacific rim #thinking about them again today #it's very easy to read hermann's animosity during the movie as him being pissed off at newt for his 'completely crazy' #theories getting attention + being a massive nuisance in general #that's exactly what it looks like if you just listen to WHAT he's saying #however if you pay attention to WHEN he says it & pay attention to his face when no one is looking it's very clear there's more going on im #like the kaiju entrails comment. newt has all these tables with guts set up right next to the line & has clearly been working there for age #theres a big pile of intestinal-looking tubes over on hermann's side of the floor already! not a peep from hermann! #but then when newt tries to join the conversation he happens to throw another little squidgy bit & suddenly hermann jumps on him about it #brings up in front of the marshall how CONSTANT this unprofessional conduct is while also cutting newt off #he physically puts himself between newt & pentecost #interrupts newt every time he tries to talk #starts making snarky little personal comments AT newt to discourage him - 'don't embarrass yourself' 'yes [just get to the point]' #'this is the point where he goes completely crazy' [significant look at newt] #keeps hovering in the background looking between newt & pentecost #like. ok he is SO MAD that newt is getting pentecost's attention here. obviously #the thing that does it for me though is how sad and resigned he looks when newt finally does get to the point #this is not the face of an angry rival #this is the face of a man with ulterior motives for his animosity #i dont think newt has any ulterior motives hes aware of lol he thinks hes in a movie about 2 geniuses vying for scientific superiority #happens to be in love with hermann but hasnt realized because hes so mad at him all the time #he only realizes how much hermann cares when he offers to drift with him
