Tom and Pete were the most unexpected couple. Pete, a strong-willed and independent man; and Tom, with his calm and introverted nature, were the differences in a unique bond structure that went beyond social norms.
On a sunny Saturday morning, Tom decides to go to IKEA with Pete and Mike, whom we can call Pete’s mentor, because Pete needs Mike oftentimes. Mike has always been a reliable fatherly figure and confidant to Pete; and Tom has thought his presence would provide a sense of stability in the chaos of a furniture store.
Yet, to the surprise of Tom, the shopping adventure has passed smoothly. Despite his dislike for the crowds, Tom has easily navigated the bustling corridors. They have chosen furniture and home decor, envisioning their home life together.
Tired but satisfied, they have reached the end of their IKEA adventure . . . As he walks towards the exit, Tom’s stomach growls, reminding him that it is time to eat. Pete hisses at Tom that he is hungry, too, and asks: ‘Burgers or hotdogs?’
Pete’s face contorts with a slight expression of annoyance. ‘I don’t like burgers,’ he replies softly.
However, in the end, Tom’s decision is finalized because there is nothing nearby but a hamburger restaurant.
As the shopping adventure has been a forced success story for Tom, a new challenge has arisen. Pete, who is always very meticulous about food, complains about the ketchup and mayo on the hamburger. The bratty husband-to-be, against the sauces, seems unexpectedly to have frustrated Tom; it can be read on his face. Pete feels that the anger of Tom, who is on the verge of giving up on marriage, is overflowing. Tom does question whether he can last a lifetime with the uncompromising Pete, even over something as trivial as his choice of sauce. Doubts flood his mind and he wonders if he has made a mistake by agreeing to marry Pete.
Seeing the tension between the two, Mike takes on the role of a mediator with all his age and experience. As a father figure for Pete, Mike has always guided him through his life. Now, seeing the difficult experiences of his relationship with Tom does not allow him to side with Pete.
Mike calmly calls out to the couple, with wisdom and compassion: ‘Happiness is in the little things, remember that troubles are meant for caring for each other. Don’t let trifles ruin your lifetime of happiness.’
Shocked at first by Mike’s unexpectedly growing support to Tom, Pete stubbornly folds his arms. He has always relied on Mike for support and understanding, but now he feels betrayed.
But bothering to take the time, Pete begins perceiving Mike’s surveillance. He realizes that; yes, Mike has not taken his side, but has encouraged opposing sides to appreciate a common ground and see the big picture. Mike’s words have made Pete reflect on the essence of relationships.
Pete puts aside his pride and turns to Tom, there is sincerity in his voice: ‘Forgive me, Ice, I exaggerated. Viper is right; there is no need to argue over such small things.’
Pete’s words melted Ice’s heart as they swept away his anger. Love is patience, reconciliation and understanding. He realizes at that moment that he has made the right choice by choosing Pete as his mate.
‘Loving you is like eating a sour candy,’ he says, smiling. ‘If you like sweets, get prepared to taste the sourness sometimes.’
‘That sounds like, “Let’s get down for a dessert!” Doesn't it?’
‘Exactly,’ Mike approves, beaming at the couple.

Tumblr media
❁ Characters : Inui Seishu & gn!reader (best friends)
❁ Genre : Angst, comfort ?
❁ Warnings : Suicide
❁ A/n : I wanted to write fluff at first but it somehow turned into angst lol. And when I say somehow it means that the one and only @emyrl helped me find inspiration, thanks again <3
Tumblr media
You were proud to do something that marked every event in life. Birth, baptism, first date, wedding, reconciliation, promotion, retirement, funeral : flowers accompanied people from the cradle to the grave.
Yet, you didn't want to see a single petal anymore.
You'll always remember the day you two met.
You were in awe of this painting, it was like love at first sight. It represented an embracing couple, united in a mysterious, sincere and soothing love. It symbolised for you the healing of two wounded beings, sewn together to share only one scar.
An overly analytical look for a ten year-old kid ; you wanted to have someone with who you could share a scar.
"You look sad," he startled you.
You both contemplated the canvas in silence until he asked :
"What's your favourite artwork ?"
"Water Lilies by Monet ! The entire series," you answered without hesitation.
"Why ?"
"Um, I like flowers. And nature in general. And these paintings bring me peace."
He laughed. But he wasn't making fun of you. Seishu would never make fun of you for your passion. After all, he was the one supporting you until you finally opened your own flower shop 16 years later.
Just as love at first sight exists in romance, it sometimes exists in friendship as well.
It has been three months since your best friend took his own life.
"We've known each other since we were kids. Your story and mine are inextricably linked and I couldn't be happy if I knew you weren't," he once told you.
You wanted to surprise him with the most beautiful bouquet of flowers you ever composed that day, you didn't warn him of your arrival.
When you entered in his living room and saw him, you felt like he was sleeping, lying on his couch, and was going to wake up, so beautiful he was.
But the emptied pills bottles dispersed on his coffee table told another story.
"... your problems are mine. I thought that it was what friendship was, wasn't it ?" you cried in a whisper.
The bond that united you went beyond sympathy or tenderness. It was also not an ordinary friendship. It was one of those unalterable attachments that can only be forged during childhood. Those that engage you for a lifetime, for better or worse.
You never visited his grave to mourn. Until October 18th of this year. He was supposed to turn 31.
Cursing the heavy rainfall, you knelt before his grave.
"Three months huh ?" you bitterly chuckled. "21 years passed in a flash but those three months seemed endless."
Your cheeks were already wet ; not because of the weather.
"I miss you. Nothing here on earth is the same. I can't hear the birds anymore, the sound of the stream no longer rejoices me and I'm talking to you and you can't hear me. I'm afraid I won't see the colour of the flowers, I'm afraid I'll never see the sun shine again. I wish I was lying on your shoulder again. Making you laugh, taking you home with me. Help me see the colours of life. Don't leave me," you begged.
"Y/n."
You knew this sweet and calm voice, his voice. You raised your head and saw him.
A real angel.
Perhaps you were insane, but it didn't matter. What mattered was that he was there with you.
"It's time, Y/n."
You told him he hadn't seen all the sunsets yet, all the sunrises. That he had not finished counting the stars on the winter nights when everything is black.
You told him about the sparkling snow, some winter mornings when the sun is there.
You also told him about the melody of the birds, about the wind in the trees, about the song of the falling rain, about the arrival of the fairy pitta birds in the spring.
You talked and talked...
He was there and listened with an attentive air, and then he beamed !
The rain finally stopped when he smiled at you and timid rays of sunshine made the pavement shimmer.
You could see it coming back into your heart ; it was great to finally feel a little bit of its warmth.
So you went on.
You told him about the good and beautiful moments spent with him. Laughter and sometimes pain that you would share together.
You told him about the flowers in your garden, about your dreams, about your friends and family. You told him they were everything to you and that you wished you could do a lot more for them in the future. You told him that each one of them was a flower in your heart.
You talked again and again. And he kept smiling at you.
So you told him about your fears.
You told him everything you would've liked to say to him but never did.
You told him you loved him.
You told him all of this, he looked at you and simply replied :
"It's time, Y/n."
So you both closed your eyes and you saw wonderful sunsets and sunrises,
Flowers, birds,
You heard the sound of the wind and the song of the rain ;
You saw everyone you loved.
He became one with the landscape, plants and fragrances in a sort of pantheistic fusion. After being intoxicated by the sea air, he melted into the scrubland, walked along the walls of dry stone, and enjoyed the smells of thyme, sage, olive oil and grilled octopus.
Seishu was the whole World in himself.
Then, he told you :
"You and the others who are staying... I'll miss you all too."
You looked up and replied :
"There'll be a time for us too, 'Shu !"
You raised your head to the sky with your eyes closed, making the most of the birdsong and the autumnal atmosphere that now rejoiced you. There was a slight breeze but the weather was good for a month of October and the sun was splashing on your face.
For the first time in a while, you smiled.

Hey, so I've basically never watched any k-dramas, but I've read a lot of manga and manhwa and the automatic next step does feel like moving into k-dramas. You seem to have watched a number, so I was wondering if you could make a recommended list? Only if you felt like it of course, but it would be helpful! (Preferably of at least some which are on netflix uk, I looked up 18 again but it's unfortunately not on here in Britain :(. But if you have favourites I'd just like to know them so I can look out for them anywhere)
Also yay! Your term's ended!
(yanks open the door) did someone say RECOMMENDATIONS?? I DO have many!!! Boy do I have them!!!!
(YAY!! One last exam and I'm done for the summer!)
I love Eastern entertainment (manga, k-dramas, c-dramas, and movies from Korea and Taiwan) because of several reasons: the scripts are phenomenal nine times out of ten; Asian culture puts a strong emphasis on the importance of family, personal responsibility, learning from one's mistakes, expressing affection through gestures and acts of service, and friendship and I really love seeing that in a story; and they make good use of silence and stillness in shows and movies, which is pretty rare in Hollywood. The quiet moments between characters are more often than not some of the most important in the story and I Love That!!
The dramas I'm (briefly) listing are in bold if they're available on Netflix UK, and in bold and italicised if they're available on Rakuten Viki (which is a mostly-free drama streaming service, though unfortunately they're rather heavy on the ads). The Absolute Favourites are marked with stars (***). Though I can't actually see the whole list of dramas available in the UK, so some of these may be wrong, and it may be worth checking twice!
If you're in the mood for something fast-paced:
Descendants of the Sun (Viki); considered a Classic
- romantic comedy, medical drama, a bit of action
- The confident and charming leader of a Special Forces unit meets a reserved surgeon and they hit it off, after some... interesting misunderstandings. But after dating briefly and breaking up, they find themselves reunited on a peacekeeping mission in a war-torn country. Insert a lot of Suspense and Excitement but also a lot of Comedy and Sincere Declarations of Love.
- if you enjoy Song Joongki's performance, I'd also recommend his movie A Werewolf Boy. If you enjoy Song Hye-kyo's performance, I'd recommend her drama Encounter.
***Come and Hug Me (Viki, but I don't know if it costs money?)
- thriller/suspense, romance, this one genuinely stressed me out but the moments of peace and reconciliation (and the ENDING) were well worth it
- Their first loves during their youth ends in her mother's death and their separation. Years later, the lively daughter of the murdered woman is now an actress, and the introverted son of the serial killer has become a police officer. They meet each other again (Of Course) and have to tackle all sorts of Nonsense (including the serial killer's return, his murderous brother's return from prison, the Media, the ghosts of their past, etc. etc.) together. HUGE focus on forgiveness, hope, healing, unconditional and self-sacrificial love. Also one of the best redemption arcs (I did in fact bawl my eyes out)
- my friend just started crying when we first watched this drama together because the male lead is just so gentle and tenderhearted and steadfast :')
If you're in the mood for something a bit slower
***Goblin/Guardian (Viki); International Acclaim
- fantasy, drama, one of the funniest dramas I've ever watched, but also tears (I cried at a rate of around once every two episodes. This show talks a lot about life and meaning and the effect your actions and words have on the people around you.)
- Kim Shin, a general from the Goryeo Dynasty, is cursed to live as an immortal Goblin (a Korean mythical/fairy tale figure) until his destined Bride pulls the sword from his chest, thus breaking the 'spell' and ending his life. He really did not expect his bride to be the vivacious and irrepressible Eun-tak, though, and What's More!! He did not expect that he would start wanting to live again :))) Includes a surprising amount of comedy, a surprising amount of tears, and EXCELLENT screenwriting. (Descendants and Goblin share the same brilliant writer.)
- fun fact: parts of it were shot in Quebec!! One of the characters refers to Canada as "the maple nation" early on in the story and my friend and I just burst into laughter.
***Encounter (Viki, but I'm not sure if it costs money?)
- melodrama, romantic comedy, FAIRY TALE
- a cold and withdrawn woman, recently divorced because of her husband's infidelity, and a warm-hearted and optimistic young man meet on the streets of Cuba by accident, and upon separating without means of contact, find themselves back in Korea as boss and newly hired employee. This sounds like a recipe for disaster: stuffed to the gills with unnecessary workplace drama and gossip, etc. but the story focuses instead on family, vulnerability, transformation, sacrifice, about art, compassion, mending relationships, opening up to people, and about the beauty in bringing and receiving comfort and love.
- also. ALSO. Fairy tale!!! with illustrated opening and ending cards and everything!!! (they literally refer to her as the Ice Princess. And her Prince is the human equivalent of sunshine. I Love him)
- if you like Park Bo-gum's performance, I'd recommend Reply 1988, too!
***One Spring Night
- melodrama; quiet and understated but very beautiful
- A bright, clever, and sharp-tongued librarian meets a quiet, steady, and gentle pharmacist one day. It turns out that he's a single father, and she's trapped in a relationship that really isn't working out. Friendship! Family! Sisters standing up for each other and saying No I Won't Let You Treat My Sister Like This, You Jerk! Figuring things out! Learning how to love! I really don't know what else to say, except for the fact that I loved it very much!!
- if you enjoy Jung Hae-in's performance, I'd also recommend Something in the Rain (which should also be on Netflix!) for his acting alone. I just think he's neat.
Reply 1988
- slice-of-life, comedy
- In the late 1980s, five friends (four boys, one girl) who have grown up with each other since childhood are Going Through It in high school. This drama is all about the little things that happen in life, and about learning to understand your family and your friends. Deok-sun is just trying to survive all of This as the middle child, and as a young girl who is trying to figure this Romance thing out. In the present, adult Deok-sun is just as lively, and is now happily married..... but to whom? :))) A Lot of '80s Asian culture, daily antics, and good old friendship.
- if you like Park Bo-gum's performance, I'd recommend Encounter too :)
18 Again (Viki)
- romantic comedy, fantasy/time travel (sort of)
- Nearly twenty years of marriage, and things have been going Wrong all over the place. His wife wants a divorce, he's no longer close to his teenaged kids, and he's just lost the job he's been faithfully working at for years. Daeyoung wishes that he could go back somehow, and finds himself 18 once again.... except he's still in the present. Interesting things ensue. He enrolls in school (it turns out to be the same one his kids attend), and decides to pursue the dreams he had to give up when he was a teenager. Antics ensue! But also Healing: he gets to know his kids all over again, and is able to view his relationships with Dajung (whom he still loves. Of course) and his estranged father in a new light.
- I have not finished this drama yet but judging from the first third of it, it is both well-written and well-acted. There are a few things that I am not a fan of, but on the whole Lee Dohyun's performance is wonderful and I have already cried buckets.
Other honourable mentions:
100 Days My Prince: historical drama. Prince caught in an assassination plot, loses his memory, wakes up in a village right when the king issues a marriage law that results in his marrying the spirited 'spinster'.
Still 17/Thirty But Seventeen: 17 year old violin prodigy in a coma after an accident, wakes up when she's 30; the boy who inadvertently caused the accident runs into her again after she wakes up and helps her adjust to her new life. Lots of wacky humour, very sweet!!

evan hansen, sam wilson, & wanda maximov?
ohh man this one's gonna get long so i'll put it under a read more :D
evan:
favorite thing about them
his sincere desire to make sure everyone is okay. half of his problems stem from that one need, but it's ultimately what makes him set things right, too.
least favorite thing about them
there are many obvious character flaws that i could point out, but the most overlooked one is that he goes off his fucking meds without telling anyone that shit is dangerous and should not be treated as anything but that.
favorite line
"dear evan hansen, today is going to be a good day and here's why. because today, no matter what else, today at least you're you. no hiding. no lying. just... you. and that's. that's enough. maybe someday, everything that happened will all feel like a distant memory. maybe someday no one will remember about the connor project. or me. maybe someday, some other kid is going to be standing here, staring out at the trees, feeling so...alone, wondering if maybe the world might look different from all the way up there. better. and maybe he'll start climbing, one branch at a time, and he'll keep going. even when it seems like he can't find another foothold. even when it feels... hopeless. like everything is telling him to let go. this time...maybe this time, he won't let go. he'll just hold on...and keep going. he'll keep going until he sees the sun."
brOTP
evan and zoe should be friends, and even if that's super unrealistic, i will still hold onto that
OTP
evan x going back on his gosh darn meds
nOTP
i've never really seen an evan ship that bothers me, actually
random headcanon
i've said it a million times and i will say it again, this kid has autism, and no one will ever convince me otherwise (side-eyes steven levenson and ben platt)
unpopular opinion
evan is neither a horrible kid or a smol uwu anxious bean. he's a mentally ill teenager, who should be treated with the nuance and understanding that deserves.
also, the kiss at the end of ywbf kills all the emotion and power of the song so quickly, why has it not been taken out yet
song i associate with them
kill the ghost - motherfolk
favorite picture of them
Tumblr media
(i am so sorry, i had to share this picture with the world it makes me laugh every time)
sam:
favorite thing about them
what is there not to love about sam wilson, honestly? if i have to pick something, it's probably his adaptability. captain america trolling him on his morning run? okay, let's talk to him about his trauma. he and black widow show up at his door saying everyone's trying to kill them? let them in and make them breakfast, if they eat that kind of thing. being hunted by some masked assassin? time to bring a knife to a gunfight and win, i guess. the masked assassin is cap's best friend? well, time to drop everything and search the world for him and become an avenger. superheroes have to register with the government, now? well, guess it's time to become a fugitive and go on the run for a few years. cap is an old man, half the world has gone on without him for five years, and now he's supposed to be captain america? well, he'll hesitate to take up the mantle, but good for steve. the masked assassin that tried to kill him is part of his found family now? sure, whatever. invite him to the cookout. i think that literally nothing could surprise this man, by now, and he just keeps doing what he feels is right without even stopping to question it.
least favorite thing about them
honestly, i don't even know. some of the stuff he says to bucky feels uncharacteristically unsympathetic, in civil war and the beginning of tfatws, but also like,,,usually he's not wrong, he's just kind of blunt about it??? idk man i love sam wilson.
oh, and i guess the cowl on his cap suit looks kinda dumb and uncomfortable
favorite line
"the only power i have is that i believe we can do better."
that's sam summed up in one line, right there. he's a normal guy surrounded by superheroes and yet he holds his own and stands out because he's so sincere and dedicated and good that it doesn't even matter
brOTP
sam and steve. we should've gotten more of them hanging out, honestly. they were great together.
OTP
sambucky, baybee! for all the reasons i listed in my answer for bucky :)
nOTP
another one i can't think of anything for. i guess sam/tony, if anyone ships that???
random headcanon
sam was actually pretty quiet, as a kid. he kind of let sarah do the talking for him. it wasn't until they got older that he started becoming more talkative and developing his sense of humor
unpopular opinion
sam did make mistakes in tfatws. bucky wasn't the only one to screw up. that was what made their reconciliation so nice. yeah, bucky was being way more of an asshole about the shield than sam was about anything, but that doesn't mean he was perfect 100% of the time, and that's good. that's what makes him human and relatable.
song i associate with them
come on, there's no way i can't say trouble man, here.
favorite picture of them
Tumblr media
wanda
favorite thing about them
her gentle kindness. especially in civil war, there's something so soft and genuine about her that's just immediately endearing.
least favorite thing about them
the way that closing scene in wandavision implied she still may become a villain, despite having that option and rejecting it at the cost of her family, earlier that same episode. it just felt...wrong.
favorite line
"i can't control their fear. only my own."
i probably quote this line way too often. it's just....chef's kiss
(honorable mention goes to: "I don't even know who you are." "You will.")
brOTP
i so wish agatha hadn't become a one-dimensional villain in the last episode, because their friendship, however fake, was really sweet.
but also her friendship with the rest of team cap, especially steve, was also really lovely and i wish we could've gotten more of that
OTP
🎶WANDAVISION, WA-WANDAVISION, WANDAVISION WA-WANDAVISION...WANDAVISION!!"🎶
nOTP
wanda/pietro....just...ew....
random headcanon
despite her love for the genre, the two sitcoms she could never watch were alf and gilligan's island. the themes of being trapped somewhere without your family, no matter how funny the circumstances, just hit too close to home.
unpopular opinion
they shouldn't have aged wanda up to match lizzie's actual age. i know it was never officially stated anywhere until wandavision, but in aou and civil war, she was heavily implied to be a teenager, and honestly, that would've made everything about her character both hit harder and make way more sense. she could have been in her late teens-early 20s by the time wandavision rolled around, but having her in her late 20s-early 30s just doesn't fit all the comments about her being a kid/going to high school/etc. making her younger would mean that her decision to join hydra was the misinformed decision of a traumatized teenager, rather than a grown woman, and could have tied into tfatws and karli, which could then expand into an actual examination of why young people are willing to go to such extremes to make change and that could have been really interesting.
song i associate with them
razzmatazz - i don't know how but they found me

"Merry Christmas, friend."
Characters: Markus, Connor and North
***
"Connor sighed. His friend looked tired, but happy. In his hands, same as Connor, were beautiful celebrating packets with presents inside. They were standing in front of a coffee shop, waiting for theirs ginger friend. "
"– What time is it now? – Markus asked, wrapping his dark coat. It was cold enough. Little snowflakes were dancing around them, landing on the ground.
Connor looked on his wristwatch, rustle packages.
– Seven o'clock. What is she doing, really?
– She said she had forgotten to buy something important. – Manfred snorted. – As always, Con. Are you surprised?
Android only noded in understanding, gave his friend a little smile. Bright fluffy Christmas tree towered over them. Kids around the couple of friends were playing and shouting, throwing snowball in each others0. Detroit's streets were full of androids and people, walking on the Hart Plaza and talking to each other. It was so peacefully and happily – Markus didn't even get used to such kind of life. It was new to him, but he liked that. Very much.
Finally, after few minutes a loud cry came from behind them:
– Hey, guys! Are you bored? Sorry, just little troubles.
North went to the friends, giving each of them one more packet. Connor and Markus grinned without malice.
– What's inside it...? - RK800 looked into the packet with interest, but ginger devinat, seeing this, slapped his hand with displeasure.
– Auch!
– No-o, Con, it's for Christmas. – she smiled. Light breeze ruffled her hair. The guy sighned once again, breathing in the night air. Streetlights were illuminating his displeased face. – Come on, if you see it now, later you won't be surprised!
"Maybe she is right" - Connor thought. But still muttered:
- Me and Markus have been stucking in the cold for more than ten minutes! We have our rights to know, what's inside, don't we? And-
– Well, quite enough, – Markus decided to intervene, raising his hands in a conciliatory manner. – Come on, we must have time to do everything before Christmas. – his friends were agreed. No one wanted to have some king of argue before Christmas, right?
North pinched Connor's nose as a sign of reconciliation.
– Don't you dare to look at your present, sweetie.
He clicked and rolled his eyes.
– As you wish.
They walked pass the Hart Plaza and up the street, gazing in amazement at the city's New Year decorations. Detroit was really wonderful in that time of year.
Tall dark buildings contrasted with the crisp white trees lining the streets. Signs and banners, Christmas tree decorations and long garlands glittered everywhere. It seemed like a dream. Such a beautiful dream. The atmosphere into which they fell was literally created for happiness and comfort. No one couldn't believe that they were so lucky to have such kind of view.
– When will we come? – Connor asked while they were going past a clozed modern zoo.
– It's over there, don't worry. – RK200 gave him a smile, slapping a friend on the shoulder. – It's our fist Christmas together. Do you think everything will be fine?
– Of course, – Connor chuckled, intercepting packages in his hands tighter. – It'll be totally fine.
– Gu-uys, we've come. – ginger deviant gleefully pointed to a large mansion overlooking the Detroit River.
***
– What do you feel about that, mh?
They were decorating Markus's house now. It was a large, spacious building, having two floors and even its own chimney. Connor liked this house, frankly speaking. It was not uncomfortable or lonely here. (Maybe because his friends were with him now) The mansion was like a big, cozy ship, intended for only them that night.
Somewhere in the kitchen North was preparing Christmas sweets, occasionally publishing dissatisfied statements due to lack of experience in cooking. Connor and Markus were diligently decorating the Christmas tree in the middle of the living room.
– About what? - android slightly surprised.
– About new type of life, New Jericho, alliance with people ...and so on. – brown-hared deviant hung another toy on the Christmas tree, glancing at his friend with interest.
He chuckled. That deviant hit him more and more every second.
– Well... I don't want make plans for the future or something like that, but I think we're going the right way. – RK200 was thoughtfully unwinding a garland, looking at the fluffy branches of a Christmas tree. – I know how do you feel, Con. It's like... change. Big changes, huh?
Detective nodded weakly.
– I live with Hank right now and feel safe, but it's seems that I still don't know, what's really going on and... Oh, sorry, I didn't want to ruin everything. Everything was so good and I just got in with my chatter–
Connor felt so embarrassing for himself. He only wanted to talk with someone about all the events that happened, but at the same time he understood that this was not the right time at all. Oh, he is such a fool...
He turned away and was about to bend over the box with toys when suddenly felt someone else's hand on his shoulder. Markus looked at him without anger or irritation, but with sincerity and kindness in the eyes.
– It's okay. I understand. - he squeezed his shoulder knowingly. – That's hard to believe. You just need time to get used to. Everything will pass and fall into place. I promise.
He hugged him, strong and loving. Connor was lost - he knew that. They all were lost for a long time. But now it is in the past. And Connor will weather the storm, Markus was sure.
Without hesitation, Connor hugged his friend back, feeling invisible support.
– Hey guys. – a red crown emerged from the kitchen. – It didn't turn out as disgusting as I thought. At least you can eat it-
But when she saw two friends hugging, all her cheerful mood noticeably faded away.
– Boys... Are you alright?
Markus and Connor pulled away from each other, continuing to smile genuinely. Misunderstanding appeared on North's face, but it quickly gave way to gaiety, as the girl realized that everything seemed to be in order.
– Okay, if you finished, suggest you to finally hang this garland and start setting the table. – RK800 nodded in agreement, as did Marcus. The bad mood disappeared as quickly as it appeared.
***
– 3... 2... 1... Merry Christmas!
Glasses with thirium clinked, joyful cries were heard from living room and from outside too. The girl, screaming: "Merry Christmas!" blew up a firecracker. Bright multi-colored sparkles flew in all directions. Guys were laughing – the most happy Christmas has finally come.
When everything calmed down, they decided to start opening the gifts. Connor looked impatiently under the tree - and found two whole boxes there. Feeling the growing excitement, he placed them in the center of the room and began to open the first. Markus and North with smiles watched the picture.
– So... What is that? New T-shirt and nice black tie, as well as a set of ...coins! – android laughed, looking at coins with enthusiasm. – Aw, thank you, North. I just needed a new shirt.
– Yep, I knew that.
The next box was from Markus. Something inside it rustled suspiciously. Wasting no time, the guy opened the gift and found there a small black puppy, merrily wagging its tail.
– OH GOD!!!
Connor was as shocked as possible. The small animal licked his hand in satisfaction, and the guy could hardly resist bursting with happiness.
– I knew you would like it.
– Are you kidding? It is the most precious little soul I've ever seen, oh god, thank you, Markus, thank you so much!!!
He jumped up and hugged his friends with boundless delight. He definitely liked the gifts.
Now it was North's turn. The girl found two gifts under the tree. The first was from Connor - it was a small box containing sweet perfume, and another larger box containing a set of cosmetics. The second was from Markus. Inside the box, the girl found nothing more than her own portrait in oil on canvas. Deviant looked very belligerent and majestic on the porter, and North could not help but admire such skillful work.
– Oh dear, that's amazing! – in admiration, she could not take her eyes off the portrait. Markus looked embarassed. But Connor pushed a friend on the shoulder with smile.
– It is really amazing, friend.
– He's damn right! Exciting! – North kissed the guy on the cheek, and he felt his cheeks burn.
In his present from the girl Markus found two wonderful books about which he dreamed for – a novel about the heroes of Ancient Greece, and also small maintenance guide for musical instruments.
– Oh my god, North... That's... Oh, I have literally no words to say, – the deviant was unimaginably pleased with the donated items.
– Come on, it's Christmas! I knew you love this kind of books. Frankly, I wanted to buy you a guitar, but it was too expensive, so I decided to give you that... And I wasn't wrong.
Markus's eyes sparkled like two burning lights. He hugged her and buried his nose in a woman's shoulder.
– Tha-ank you, god, it is so wonderful...
In the second box from Connor he found a large canvas for painting and a set of brushes, watercolors, and a whole bag of colored crayons and pencils.
- That is all...for me? - Markus looked very excited. He didn't know that Connor had so much free time and money for his present.
– Of course, friend. Merry Christmas!
It looked like a dream, but it wasn't. They all were so happy. Happy and joyful.
Definitely this Christmas was awesome."

Druck, s5 episode 10 - belated thoughts and overall season impressions
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really like that Nora is still being shown with her symptoms here.  She’s reconnecting with people, and letting people know things about what’s happening, but that doesn’t magically fix everything.  And it’s good that she takes the chance to talk to them a little bit about everything.  It does feel a bit sudden in a lot of ways - she was just anxious about telling the therapist all this stuff and being labeled crazy (I assume - that’s certainly the vibe she gave off) and now she’s super happy to tell the girls all this stuff.  I’m happy that she wants to and feels like she can, but it also feels quite quick.  But that’s the nature of something like this, I guess.  Everything needs to be resolved now.  The whole business with the merch is weird too, with the way she just goes ‘yeah sure, I’m emotionally numb so I’ll draw lots and lots of pictures on lots of things.’  Again, the girls are nice about it, but I guess she feels a bit guilty because it was her who stuffed it up so it feels like there’s some pressure there, even if they don’t mean it.  And ugh, poor Ava when Kieu My turned up - I mean I get that most of this group don’t necessarily know how bad the whole thing was for her but it feels really weird that the focus is on Fatou’s nerves here rather than actually dealing with some of the bigger and more serious stuff that’s floating around with this.  I know it was more the others, but we know from later that this was pretty shitty for Ava.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - I really hope the bullying gets addressed properly and not swept under the table.  The fact that Nora is still happy to be around these people after her experiences with Constantin and Ismail makes me wary.  But I do still have hope that all this will be worked through.  If they are combining the squads (and it looks like they are), then they can’t have this unresolved, not when it’s such a big thing for Ava (and should have affected Nora more if she hadn’t been so numb to everything).
Tumblr media
I understand why they have this scene with Kiki about being allowed to stay in the flat by themselves, and I think it’s goods that they deal with all of that (the way Kiki came running as soon as she felt she was needed - it’s not good for her, as they all seem to realise and I’m glad everyone is getting to do what’s working best for them), but it felt very rushed (I suspect I may say that a lot about this episode - it’s all stuff that needs to happen and it’s already quite long, but it feels too fast for me).  And the same with Nora’s comments about therapy.  She says she quite likes it and wants to continue and yet we didn’t see that.  What we saw was a very closed off and belligerent Nora who was only just starting to thaw in that session.  And yes she has a reason to make it all seem more cheerful than she really feels, but it’s still very abrupt as a change.  This is probably the only time I haven’t found a scene with this family compelling and that’s a bit of a shame.
Tumblr media
And another rushed moment.  There was a lot shoved into this one clip (Josh, merch, a bullying session, a concert we never heard of til now, a random half-baked apology from Constantin) - for some reason, the show thinks Ismail and Constantin still need to be assholes for no reason.  I mean, clearly it’s designed to show that Kieu My is ‘better’ than they are because she engages and is willing to do ‘12 year old stuff’, but again, if we’re connecting these two squads then this sort of stuff has to stop.  I know I get worked up about this, but it really bugs me.  This behaviour is childish and I’m finding it boring to watch.  Even the apology from Constantin (which does seem sincere) isn’t enough to balance how stupid this ongoing behaviour is.  Hopefully they deal more with that later too and don’t just drop it.  My other take away from this: Nora has to draw 76 things already????  This is going to take forever and I have no idea how she’s going to manage that alongside her classwork.
Tumblr media
Oh, I love this little mis-matched table and chair thing they have going on.  It’s so cute and I feel like it really perfectly fits them and their vibes, you know?  This whole friendsgiving idea is so cute and I love that they took what Ava was saying and tried to do something nice for her.  They really are a sweet group of kids.  And her face when she saw it is just ... perfect.  Ugh, when am I getting my Ava season?????  This little conversation between Nora and Josh is very good, too.  You can feel him trying and how hard it is for them both.  I do wish they had dragged this part out a bit longer, either pushing the original break up to earlier in the season or by spreading this into another one, but I like that they’re showing this part.  It IS awkward and difficult to be friends with someone you have feelings for and good on Josh for saying that he just can’t do it.  It hurts and it’s hard, but honesty really is key.  And that, for me, is the biggest thing Nora has had to learn this season.  You can’t hide behind a face and expect things to be okay.  So all these moments of honesty that she’s facing and dealing with, those are so important to her growth.  And then we end with the girls supporting each other which I also really love.  They are all super adorable!
Tumblr media
This last clip is also nice.  I still think this sudden ‘live concert’ coming out of nowhere in this last episode is a bit rushed, but the execution is cool.  Ava and Fatou are adorable together and I need a lot more of them singing.  I’m not 100% feeling the thing with Josh and Nora, which is kind of ironic, but it is cute.  I just wish this had all been given more time.  In fact these are the things I wish had more space: the Cash Queens reunion/reconciliation (it needed more conversation/discussion), the Constantin/Ismail/Kieu My stuff being dealt with in more depth (though hopefully this is coming), the Machwitz siblings deciding to live together and Kiki being okay with it (that one needed another clip or two, I think), and the Josh/Nora reconciliation.  Some things have been done really well.  I do think Nora’s mental health was done well, and I liked that it makes clear in this episode that she isn’t totally well and doesn’t expect to be in the near future.  Having said that, I’m not a huge fan of the ‘minute by minute’ idea being moved here.  In some ways it works (this is about a mental illness, after all, and so it fits in that way), but in others ... that’s so iconic for a specific situation and this doesn’t fit in with that one.  Even needed it in a very specific way, and Nora needs something, sure, but I don’t think quite nails her specific needs and I wish they had thought it through for her a little more thoroughly.
Overall, I like the episode.  My biggest issue with this episode is that it’s trying to do so much in such a short time.  Every clip has so much packed into it that nothing really feels like it has time to breathe.  I assume there’s a reason why they’re sticking to 10 episodes, but I wish that either they didn’t have to or that they had paced things more evenly through the season.  The great strength of Skam and Druck is, I feel, that everything is allowed to be paced as it needs to be.  That things happen in a way that gives weight and meaning to lives in a way that isn’t dramatic and isn’t overwrought, but which shows truths about people and their lives.  That this episode hasn’t been able to do that in the same way is a shame.  It’s the ending; it should be the strongest one.  Having said that, I think the friendsgiving clip manages to do exactly that and I love it for it.  It is my favourite clip of this episode and one of my favourites of the season.  This probably feels negative and like all I’m doing is criticising the episode and the season, but that’s not true at all.
Overall I really enjoyed this season, particularly the sibling dynamics and getting to know the new girls.  It has its flaws, but so do my absolute favourite seasons, and I think it’s a really nice entry into a new gen and some new characters.  The mental illness plot was good to see and I really liked some of the decisions they made around showing its build up and how it affected Nora.  The lighting chosen, the framing, some of the shots they chose - it all built that part up very well.  And while the resolution to it did feel a bit rushed, I do like the acknowledgement that it’s still part of Nora and she’s going to be dealing with it into the future.  And while I’m not on board with Kieu My being the love interest until and unless they address the bullying properly, I do like that we have plots already brewing for next season.  Ava is clearly not cool with it (that whole ‘you deserve better than her’ thing she said to Fatou), and Fatou was clearly thinking she had a chance until the Freindsgiving business and so things are set up for the new season.  It’s a really decent intro to the new era, and solidly sets up characters while telling a story that is good and even compelling in places.

A New Beginning
> Lincoln sat hunched forward, his elbows rested on his knees and a tense expression adorning his face. It was a pleasant day in Ketcham Park, neither too hot nor too cold, not to mention mostly empty thanks to the early hour. Not that Lincoln was really taking it in… the man was so lost in his own thoughts that he was practically dead to the world. > Lincoln shut his eyes, taking a deep breath and letting out a sigh as he leaned back against the park bench. He took another glance at his phone: 10:23. Seven minutes to go. Not that he expected the man to arrive right on the dot, assuming he even showed up at all. At some level, perhaps Lincoln wished he wouldn’t. He’d tried to tell himself that time heals all wounds, but he somehow doubted that would be the case this time. If there HAD been a chance at reconciliation, that opportunity had long since passed. Besides, he hadn’t set up this meeting to beg for forgiveness. He was here for advice and, God willing, perhaps some sense of closure. > It was 10:39 when the sound of approaching footsteps snapped him out of his thoughts, accompanied by the gentle crunching of autumn leaves underfoot. Lincoln tensed up, taking another deep breath before looking towards the source of the noise. As expected, there he was… so familiar and yet so much older, so much more worn and tired than when Lincoln had seen him last. > His father, Lynn Loud. > The man said nothing as he approached, nor as he stared coldly at his son for a few seconds before taking a seat beside him… noticeably as far from him as he could manage. Lincoln frowned and looked away, locking his fingers together as he considered what, exactly, he was meant to say. ‘Hello’? ‘Long time no see’? > “...Hey, dad.” > Smooth.
> “...Lincoln.” Lynn’s voice was cold and flat, nothing like what one would expect from a father who hadn’t seen his son in twelve years. Not that Lincoln could blame him, given the… UNIQUE circumstances of the situation. > At first, keeping things secret from his parents had been easy enough… they’d assumed Loan had been conceived shortly before Bobby’s untimely death, though Lincoln had had little say in the matter that time around. They’d been more than willing to believe that the sweet and naïve Leni would get suckered into premarital sex, nor had they been surprised when the hard-partying Luna became pregnant with an illegitimate child. > Luan, however, had been another matter. They’d had a hard time believing that LUAN of all people would be so reckless… she’d hardly seemed the type to put out so easily, and of course three daughters getting pregnant from random hook-ups in a row raised more than a few suspicions. When Lupa was born, that had been the end of it all: that white hair had left no question to her parentage. > To say they hadn’t taken it well would be an understatement. > “Uh… thanks for agreeing to meet with me,” Lincoln said softly, receiving little more than a vague grunt in response. The younger man cleared his throat before continuing. “Soo… how’s mo-” > “How did you get our number, Lincoln?” His father asked plainly. > “I got it from Lily,” He said. Lynn’s eyes narrowed, a grimace crossing his face at his son’s words. > “So you’re talking to Lily now...” > “Yeah… and that’s ALL we’re doing,” His son assured him. The older man scoffed under his breath. “I’m telling the truth.” > “You were ‘telling the truth’ before, too.” Lincoln winced, though he couldn’t really refute his father’s point.
> “...I’m telling the truth,” He said again in a quiet tone. “I’ve… I’ve put all that behind me, now. Or… I’m trying to, at least.” Lynn gave a dismissive snort of laughter. > “You really think you can put it behind you, Lincoln?” Lynn asked. “You know what they say about tigers and their stripes.” > “Look, I wasn’t myself-” > “Oh, cut the bullshit,” Lynn spat. “I’ve heard it all before. ‘It was Lisa’s experiment’, ‘I couldn’t control myself’, I’ve heard it all. You’re not a child anymore, Lincoln… no matter what Lisa may have exposed you to, your actions are still yours. Stop pretending otherwise.” > “I’m not… I’m not pretending,” Lincoln muttered. “I fucked up. I know damn well I can’t run from that, and I’ve given up trying to.” His father fell silent once more; after some time, the man shut his eyes and sighed. > “Let’s just cut to the chase. What do you want, Lincoln?” > Lincoln frowned and drummed his fingers against his knee. He looked over at his father, taking in the man’s aged appearance. He looked tired and haggard, even considering his age; his eyes were framed by heavy creases and wrinkles, his skin was sagging and dotted with liver spots, and overall he seemed to have lost his confidence and lust for life. Lynn was naught but a shell of his former self and it wasn’t lost on Lincoln that, at some level, HE had caused this. > “Look, I…” He began, pausing to take a deep breath before continuing. “...I need some advice.” His father glanced at him for the first time since sitting down, cocking an eyebrow in confusion. > “Advice…?” He asked; Lincoln nodded. > “Like I said, I’m done running. I’m trying to… FIX this. Take responsibility, I mean.”
> “...Are you, now.” Lynn sounded almost incredulous, not that Lincoln could blame him. He fidgeted with his wedding ring as he mulled over his words, something that did not go unnoticed by his father. “You’re married?” > “Huh? Oh… yeah.” He raised his hand to give the man a better look at the ring. “To Ronnie Anne, actually… remember her? We have two kids, Robert and Reina. Twins, actually… you’d like them, I think.” Lynn glanced at the ring for a brief moment before looking away with a huff. > “...That poor woman.” > “She knows, you know,” Lincoln said. “I was honest about it from the beginning. She… helped me when I needed it most. And even when I slipped again, when I BETRAYED her, she gave me another chance. This time, I’m not going to waste it.” Lynn’s expression was hard to read… he seemed to be searching his son’s eyes, as though he were trying to get a read on him. Lincoln simply stared back with an unwavering, resolute gaze. > “Alright… go on, then.” Lynn said. “What’s this ‘advice’ you apparently need so badly?” > “There’s been… a few changes, these past couple of years,” Lincoln explained. “Loan ran away from home and she’s been living with us ever since, with Lori’s blessings. I’ve gotten back in contact with some of the others, too. Leni’s been around a lot more, and Liena and Lyle-” > “Lyle…?” His father looked confused. Lincoln sighed; he’d forgotten just how deep his parents’ resentment ran. > “...He’s Leni’s.” Lincoln had already expected his father’s scoff before he heard it. > “Just couldn’t help but go back for more, huh?” He said in a harsh, judgmental tone. “Yes, CLEARLY you’ve learned your lesson.”
> “That was nearly SIX YEARS A-” Lincoln caught himself and took a deep breath to calm down. “...Look. Think what you want… judge me, hate me, I don’t care. But I’m not that person anymore. I’m ready to stop running, to stop HIDING from my mistakes. I’m ready to be a father to these kids.” > “So you’re going to ruin their lives by telling them what they really are?” Lynn countered. > “I’m going to tell them the TRUTH, dad. Better they find out now than later,” Lincoln said. “That’s what I think, anyway.” Lynn fell silent and glanced away, seemingly lost in thought. “Look, dad…” The younger man continued, shifting slightly to face him. “You and mom raised eleven kids on your own. I-” > “You want me to tell you how to raise your kids. ME. Because I did SUCH a good job, right?” Lynn shook his head and gave a dry, humorless chuckle. “You really ARE out of your mind.” Lincoln could hear the bitterness in his father’s tone, but it was different this time… focused inward, not outward. > “What happened wasn’t your fault, dad,” He said softly. “And it wasn’t mom’s either. You did the best you could, and honestly? I think you did the best ANYONE could do. What happened was on us, and nobody else.” Lynn furrowed his brow as he considered his son’s words, and Lincoln pushed on. “That’s why… that’s why I came to you. I want to know what you think I should do, here. Not as OUR father, but as A father. Please.” > For what felt like several minutes they sat in silence, broken only by the chirping of birds and the distant voices carried by the wind. Just as Lincoln was about to speak again, his father exhaled softly and scratched the back of his head.
> “Those kids of yours… the twins. They know?” He asked. > “...Some of it, yeah.” > “How’d they take it?” > “Pretty well, but… y’know. They’re young.” Lincoln said. “Loan knows too, of course. She took it pretty hard, but she’s come to accept it more or less. And Liena and Lyle always knew… Leni never kept it secret from them.” > “Of course she didn’t…” Lynn grumbled with a roll of his eyes. He leaned back and pinched at the bridge of his nose, taking a moment before continuing. “Alright… alright. Here’s what I think. You really want to make amends? You REALLY want to make things right?” > “More than anything.” Lincoln assured him. His father stared at him for a moment, gauging his sincerity… then gave a small nod. > “Then you have to bring them together,” He said. Lincoln’s brow furrowed in confusion. > “Well… yeah, that’s what I’m-” > “No, Lincoln. What you’re planning to do is tell these kids the truth, and then what? Share custody? Visit them when you can? You really think that would do anything to help?” Lincoln averted his eyes and chewed his lip in thought. His father had a point; even if he revealed the truth to his kids, even if he tried to reconnect with his sisters, what then? He couldn’t see them all the time, right? He had his wife, their children, not to mention Loan… he had his family. How could he split his time between eight others? > “...What can I do, then…?” > “The problem is that you’re only thinking of them as YOUR kids.” Lynn explained. “But they’re more than that: they’re each others’ siblings, every one of them. They’re going to need each other just as much as they’re going to need you. So don’t tear yourself apart trying to be a father to each of them… be a father to ALL of them. Bring them together, under one roof. As a FAMILY.”
> Again, he was right… Lincoln was only looking at things from his own perspective, failing to understand the bigger picture. Thinking back, he couldn’t imagine having to grow up without his sisters in his life, later events aside. Loan was certainly happier since moving in with them and the twins, and even the timid Bobby took a quick liking to her. Liena had also been thrilled to meet her three half-siblings, and Lyle… > Well, Lincoln was sure he’d warm up to them in time. > “That’s… a good idea, I guess…” Lincoln muttered. “...But things are getting a bit cramped as is, and there’s no way in hell I could afford a place big enough.” > “I guess that would be an issue, wouldn’t it…” Lynn mumbled before falling silent again. He seemed a bit anxious, as though he were deeply considering something; finally the man leaned back with a sigh. “...Earlier, you asked about your mother.” > “Huh? Oh, uh, right…” Lincoln said, unsure what this had to do with the current situation. “How’s she doing?” > “She’s… not well,” Lynn said quietly. > “Not well…?” There was solemn note to his father’s voice that made Lincoln’s stomach twist into knots. “What do you mean ‘not well’? I-is it serious…?!” > “I wouldn’t bother telling you if it wasn’t,” His father said. “It’s her heart… some fancy medical term, cardipathy or something like that. Runs in her side of the family, apparently… go figure.” > Lincoln felt a wave of guilt wash over him; as bad as his father had taken the truth of his grandchildren’s parentage, the revelation had absolutely DESTROYED his mother. He knew stress could lead to heart disease, and even if his father wouldn’t say it something in his gut told him he was responsible for this… hereditary or not. > “Lily didn’t say anything about this…” > “Because we haven’t told her, yet.” > “I-I… is it… c-can they cure it?”
> “It’s… treatable. POSSIBLY, anyway...” Lynn said. “There’s a heart doctor out-of-state, one of the best in the country for this kind of thing. So… we’re leaving Michigan for good.” Lincoln turned to his father with wide eyes. > “You’re leaving…?” The man gave a nod of confirmation. “Where’re you going?” > “AWAY, Lincoln.” Lynn said plainly. “That’s all you need to know.” Lincoln flinched at his father’s icy tone. “Anyway, my point: we’re selling the house. Obviously.” It took his son a moment to process what he was getting at. > “What’re… oh.” > “It could use some TLC, but it’s in decent shape… honestly, probably better shape than it WAS.” Lynn said, glancing over at this son. “I’m willing to give you a good price on it, if you want it.” A small grin crossed Lincoln’s face. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing… the house could be his. THE house. > His home. > “I… wow, dad…” He stammered; Lynn grimaced and turned away, seemingly irritated by his son’s sincerity. “That’s… that’d be great! I… wait, I mean, I still need to talk to Ronnie about, well, ALL of this, I-” > “Do what you have to,” Lynn huffed. “Talk to your wife and sisters, figure things out. Or not, I really don’t care.” He grasped the armrest and groaned, getting to his feet with noticeable difficulty. > “Dad… are you-” Lincoln began, but his father simply waved off his concern. > “We’re leaving in two months,” The elder Loud said. “I’ll give you till the 29th to make up your mind… after that, I’m putting it back on the market. And that’s the ONLY reason I want you calling me again, got it?” > “I…” Lincoln trailed off, averting his eyes from his father. “...Yeah. Yeah, I got it.” > “Good.” Lynn said with a curt nod. “I guess that’s that, then.”
> “...Yeah.” Lincoln muttered. Lynn’s frown deepened as he glanced over at his son. His gaze lingered on the sullen man sitting before him, taking in his appearance much as Lincoln had taken in his. He still looked so much like the child he’d known… his white hair, freckled cheeks, chipped overbite. Those baby-blue eyes, just like Rita’s. And yet even at thirty years of age, the man looked almost as brow-beaten and exhausted as he did. Lynn sighed; he supposed if he was ever going to say it, it had to be now. > “I… I don’t hate you, Lincoln.” He said quietly, his son looking back up at him in surprise. “I don’t hate any of you, I never could. But I can’t forgive you, either… not for what you did to us. To this FAMILY.” > “I know.” Lincoln’s voice was barely loud enough for his father to hear, but he got the message nonetheless. He knew his son was genuinely remorseful… he knew his son was a good man. But Lynn could only forgive so much. > “You still have a chance to set things right with them, though.” Lynn said. “And I’m sure you will. You’ll try your best, at least... you always did.” The older man adjusted his coat before giving his son a half-hearted pat on the shoulder. “The rest is up to you, Lincoln. Good luck.” With that, he turned and set back off down the path. Lincoln felt conflicted as he watched him leave… part of him wanted to beg for forgiveness. Part of him wanted to scream at the man for being so dismissive of his own children. > Part of him just wanted to hug his father again. > “D-dad!” Lincoln called out as he stood from the bench, halting his father in his tracks. “Look, I get that you resent me, and the others too… but the kids didn’t do anything wrong. They… t-they deserve to know their grandparents, at least.” For a few moments Lynn neither spoke nor moved, not so much as glancing back at his son.
> “...Goodbye, Lincoln.” And that was that; Lynn continued on without saying anything further. Lincoln stood and watched him walk away, not moving until the man had completely disappeared from his sight. Then, Lincoln let out a deep breath and collapsed back onto the bench, his knees giving way beneath him. To say that their meeting had been emotionally draining would be an understatement… he almost felt physically exhausted, and as much as he wanted to hurry back home and pass out on the couch even the mere task of walking to his car seemed daunting at the moment. So he sat, and waited. > And thought. > He’d like to believe that his father’s noncommittal response had been a ‘yes’... or even a ‘maybe’ would suffice. But, his gut told him otherwise. What he and his sisters had done had hurt their parents so deeply that even now they were still feeling its impact… it was hardly surprising that they’d want nothing to do with them OR their inscestuous offspring. Hell, Lincoln doubted he would ever even speak to the man in person again. > Perhaps it was for the best. > After some time, Lincoln felt rested enough to get back on his feet. He trudged his way down the path, the leaves crunching beneath his feet as he walked. Lincoln had a lot to think about, to be sure… a lot to consider, and a lot to discuss. In any case, he knew that soon enough his life would be getting a hell of a lot more complicated than it already was. > As he drove home, Lincoln couldn’t help but take a small detour. He veered off from the main roads, past familiar landmarks and down the peaceful residential streets. Finally, after some time he reached his destination: 1216 Franklin Ave. > His childhood home.
> Lincoln parked across the street and got out of his car, hopeful that his parents wouldn’t see him, assuming they were even home. It hadn’t changed much over the years… it bore a fresh coat of paint, and the lawn was free from the discarded toys and junk that had once littered the grass. But other than that, it looked almost exactly as he’d remembered it. > Lincoln chuckled as the memories came back to him. It was a chaotic place, sure… and kind of a dump to boot. But it had been his home and, despite everything, he remembered it fondly. Perhaps his own children could make good memories there too. > He smirked, his gaze lingering on the old house a while longer before getting back into his car. Things were still far from set in stone, of course… he had no idea how the hell he was going to pitch this to his sisters, let alone his WIFE. But he’d think of something. He always did. > As Lincoln drove onwards towards Hazeltuckey, he couldn’t help but feel optimistic. As much as it stung, this final meeting with his father had, in a sense, brought with it a sense of closure. The end of one chapter in Lincoln’s life, and the beginning of another. > Back where it all began in the first place.

The Grind- Chapter 22
Tumblr media
(gif by @vanessacarlysle)
All my perpetual fretting over Tia’s reaction to the news of my reconciliation with Colton was all for…well…. It was all 100% necessary. She yelled phrases such as “if you wanna let the asshole back in your bed, you can clean up the mess he’s gonna make,” and “what did the dickhead do to convince you?” Both valid, however brutally honest they may have seemed. I made up my mind not to push it on her just yet, but to tip-toe through the tulips, if you will, until she warmed up to him. The two of them were quite similar in more ways than one, so they were bound to fall into at least a civil relationship sooner or later. Or, there unpredictable, combusting similarities would eventually just explode like the boom of a nuke.
As for progression on the Ritter/Elliott home front, things were moving along nicely. We were back to our morning coffee routine at The Grind, and our running schedule had been carefully decided for Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. One of those particular Sunday workouts had navigated us to the new home Colton had purchased as of late, so he could give me the tour. He’d met me at my apartment that morning, carless, but I hadn’t considered where he’d began his run from.
He’d moved in a little over 5 months ago, and judging at first glances the deposit was heavy for a place like this. The brick front, two story structure must have been newly built on the street because the miniscule grassy path he did have in his side yard, was just ever so slightly sprouting from the clumpy, muddy surface. He led me up a black painted front porch through the front door, seemingly eager to show off his purchase from a successful years earnings.
“Home sweet home. Here we are!” He remarked before breaking the plain into his den. “Whatddya think?”
I thought it wasn’t the place I pictured him in, for starters. Not in pessimistic manner or anything, the space was merely more modern, and suburban for what I imagined his quarters to be like. The cabinets of a kitchen just to the right of the main entrance, were bright white, and stealthy black appliances accentuated more bleach white on the walls. Upon trailing deeper into the area, we entered a hardwood floor living room, where the navy of his leather couch shined under the natural light blazing in from a large window.
“It’s super nice, Colt! You keep it so… clean.” Seriously, there wasn’t a stich of the rug out of place. No molding take-out boxes on his countertops, or discarded shoes strung wildly about.
“Give it time,” he pointed at me with a wide smile. “I ain’t been here long enough to destroy it yet.”
“Don’t expect me to come over and clean the place, mister. This girl is no maid,” I said overlapping my arms in a forewarning.
“You could be. Hey, we could get you one of those little outfits and everything,” Colton said wagging his eyebrows in suggestion. “I’m gonna go shower real quick, then we’ll take the bike back to your apartment. Just hang out here, and give me 20. Unless of course, you’d like the tour of my shower too..”
Okay, yes please! I need to get a good luck at the tub. Inspect the plumbing, and the drains or whatever..
“I don’t have a change of clean clothes, silly. But, you get all squeaky clean, then I’ll take you on the tour of my new place. The bedroom is to die for...” He dropped his head back in a cantankerous huff as if I was torturing him for my own pleasure.
While he left me unsupervised, fidgeting on the couch, I decided some friendly, not at all psychotic girlfriend snooping would be harmless. Wandering aimlessly in my sock feet about the sitting area and kitchenette, something in particular sparked my interest plastered on the double doors of his refrigerator. In carefully executed newspaper snippets, were all of my published works from the last three years held up on display by small, coinlike magnets. One piece I’d written on an injured All-American local boy who had withdrawn his commitment to Pitt due to apparent substance issues. Various tidbits from the usual Steelers coverage, and my article from his fight with Mendez.
Thin, chalky newspaper nearly covered the entire spread of the left side freezer door. He appeared to have saved nearly every published work that had my name attached to it. What made the gesture even more monumentally romantic, was that The Pilot wasn’t available for subscription, nor a newsprint you could grab at any local convenient store on your morning milk run. It was only available for purchase at two outdoor newsstands in the city, one being a small cart on the sidewalk at the front entrance of our main office. The other was easily a 20-minute commute from any of the local businesses he frequented. Neither spot being one he’d cross by coincidence on his morning jog through downtown, or even the closest grocery store, or Mac’s. Meaning the man had made a specific trip, every Thursday morning to spend $3.75 on a paper that he could’ve searched the internet for. I sketched a feathery finger over the printed words, hearing a single dolloped tear drip below at my feet to the crisp tile of his kitchen floor. He really had never sincerely left me, just like he said only a handful of days ago.
“There’s more in an old cardboard box on the rack under the coffee table.” His stealthy, barefoot approach behind me was completely undetected, or I had just been so preoccupied with my discovery that any background noise was hushed.
I faced him, startled, carelessly forgetting to wipe the still running stream of tears, and hiccupped to repress audibly weeping.
“Oh, woah. Woah, baby. Hey, what’s wrong?” Colt stepped once to reach me, and cloaked me into the embrace of his grey tee, blotched with undried remnants of his shower. He placed both hands to my cheeks, leaving my face trapped between his scuffed, worked palms. Eyes searching over my face, like he was looking for the reason of my tears written somewhere across my forehead.
“I’m fine, seriously. It’s nothing.” I nearly snorted to sniff the running of my nose. Yeah, that was convincing. He’ll be right off your back now.
“Talk to me, Livvy. What’s goin’ on, huh? I know tears when I see ‘em. Especially yours.”
“You did this? You kept them? All, of them?”
A hesitant, “U” shape danced over his lips at my question. “Of course I did, babe. Well, I almost missed one week, but I told the guy at the stand I’d give him 20 bucks if he could get me a copy.”
It drew a laugh from both of us, mine still mixed with some joyful tears.
“It’s got your name on it, Liv. Hell, I woulda paid all the money in my wallet if you had written the alphabet down and had it published. I told you once I was proud a’ ya’, and I meant it.”
“I just didn’t… I never thought… I didn’t know you cared this much. I’m surprised you went through that trouble, especially since we weren’t even together for over half of these.” I looked back for the tenth time over the collection marked with my signature.
“I think that’s when I started to care so much. When we weren’t together, I mean. Because y’know, that’s the weird, twisted fucker I am,” he said rolling his eyes.
His hands departed from my face, and one was now pinching the bridge of his masculine nose in frustrated contemplation. I didn’t see the normal abundance of equanimity in his eyes now that normally dwelled there, and I was well aware that he was struggling for the words he sought. “I’m a head case, Liv. I find the love of my life, and talk to her like dog shit, because that’s obviously what a sensible man would do? God… What fuckin’ sense does that make?”
Tumblr media
“Honest? It makes perfect sense, actually.” I comforted him, trying to distinguish the fires of aggravation, and self-loathing I could see kindling behind his eyes. “It’s the typical reaction of a man who’s never been in love before, and doesn’t have a damn clue how to handle all the things his feeling all of a sudden.”
“I know exactly how t’ handle it now though.” Colton said snatching me like a flimsy sack of potatoes into his grips, and reaching for a sly kiss.
When his arms outreached though, one of the tattoo additions I had been suspicious of when we bumped into each other at the Temple that fateful day, revealed itself like a shiny penny catching the beams of the sun.  Carefully placed on the tender, hairless skin of the underside of his bicep amongst his dedication to the Andy Warhol bridge, and a Latin phrase “Fortis Passioni deditus” translating to “strong willed”, was a small 21 needled in varsity print.
I immediately locked a grip around the evidence in question, raising it further into the light to investigate whether my eyes had been viciously deceiving me. He didn’t dispute, either from downright perplexity, or for the simple fact that he knew exactly what had won my attention and wanted me to snoop it out a little more closely.
Once I had wiped sternly over the numbers with a thumb, seeing they were indeed permanently etched onto his smooth skin, I looked intently upward to his waiting face. I wanted to smile in cheesy satisfaction, I wanted to cry in earnest adoration, and I wanted to claw the very ink out of his skin as backlash for his silly, erratic decision. But no, not really. The sensible, rational Liv rallied admirably to find a way to veto what he had done and hammer him with venomous disapproval. Thankfully, my fanatical love for the man eclipsed the once “safe” nature I carried, and all I wanted to do was fall at his feet.
“Took ya’ long enough, 2-1.” He smiled barely showing a top row of teeth.
“Wh..when?” I tripped over my tongue.
“Few months after the Mendez fight, I think. Was gonna put it on my chest, next to ma’s date of remission. But my guy down at the parlor said here looked better.” The man explained so coolly as if a shrine to my basketball number, and his pet name for me drawn onto his flesh was just something people did so commonly. Seriously, it sounded as if he was just reading off the lottery numbers in the Sunday paper.
“A few months? So, you did this after you dumped me? We weren’t even together and you got this tattoo?”
“Are you mad? Like…seriously upset with me, Liv? I mean, yeah, it was a little reckless, but that shoudn’t surprise you, baby,” he snickered. “But I knew I’d get you back, Livvy. Or I was gonna damn die tryin’. The way I saw it, it would either end up being something meaningful to our story that we could tell our babies in 10 years. Or, if I didn’t win you back, I’d have to look at it every fuckin’ day and think of the colossal mistake I made.”
10 years? Babies? DON’T FAINT. DO NOT.
“Lucky for you then, huh? Your plan played out for the better, I suppose.” I stretched on my small toes to pat my nose to his.
“So, you like it then?”
I didn’t bother to reward him with praise, instead just sucked a hearty kiss from the thin part in his opened mouth, humming sensually.
“Colton?”
“Yeah, babe?”
“Take me to bed. Now.”

Killian Jones deserves more friendships... Just sayin
YES.
Although, to be fair, he does have friendships and relationships in the show. Plenty of them, in fact! The problem is that they’re TOLD to us rather than SHOWN to us most of the time, and the few glimpses we GET of these relationships are so short and infrequent that it makes them easy to forget or underestimate, and WAY too easy for people to shrug off or sweep under the rug in order to focus on whatever relationships THEY want to paint as being the “one and only” important relationship in Killian’s storyline.
For fun, let’s have an impromptu retrospective of his canon relationships:
Hook and His Mother: From Wish Hook’s naming of Alice, and his comment that his mother “tried to stay with [him] as long as she could” we know that they had a good relationship, he remembers her fondly, and she left him all too soon. Unfortunately, that’s literally all we know - and we never got to SEE her.
Hook and His Father: Before he sold his sons into slavery for a rowboat, Brennan Jones seemed to be a good father. We’re told this by the show in the way he comforts Killian, and how Killian idolizes him and wants to be just like him. Granted, this could be due more so to Killian’s own tendency to pick a person in his life and put them on a pedestal, but we know from the others he’s put on such pedestals that he tends to choose people he feels are good people. Even Killian’s “He wouldn’t do that!” outburst when he learns what his father has done points to the fact that his relationship with Brennan before this point was positive enough that the boy genuinely doesn’t believe his father would do this to him. And it is this good relationship they had that left Killian feeling as abandoned and betrayed as he did. Had the relationship been bad from the start, he may not have been as scarred by the abandonment, itself.
Hook and Liam: The show makes a HUGE deal about how important Liam is to Hook, and we can see that in how Hook talks about him and the few flashbacks we were allowed to see… but he only actually appears in three episodes. It’s just the first of many examples where we’re told “this is an important relationship of Hook’s” without being shown enough evidence in the show to really illustrate how or WHY it’s so important. We only get glimpses and are forced to fill in the blanks on our own.
Hook and Milah: Like with Liam, we are told in a myriad of ways just HOW important this relationship is to Hook, but shown very little of it. Fandom has done a wonderful job of filling in the blanks, of course, but there’s so little canon information to go on, aside from the fact that we’re TOLD that his love for her never waned for literally hundreds of years. It’s why some fans can so easily shrug off the importance of this relationship, as well - which is the problem when it comes to almost ALL of Hook’s relationships. He has them; we’re told he has them, but without SEEING them, it’s easy for people to discredit them.
Hook and Smee: Yes, we know they’re “best mates” and Smee is always around and he’s Hook’s first mate and always loyal to him… but you can count the number of truly meaningful scenes they share on, well, one hand. The show relies more on the viewer knowing that Hook and Smee are a classic duo than they use the actual storytelling to show us that it’s true.
Hook and Baelfire: Hook didn’t sell Baelfire off of his ship the day after he arrived. It was some time later. You can tell by how close they are in the Port/Starboard scene, when Hook reveals his own abandonment to him. Hook also confirms it when he tells Emma that Neal was with him “long enough to know I miss him, too”. That wasn’t a day or two. It was awhile. Long enough to profoundly affect Hook. Long enough for Hook to harbor (and maintain) almost fatherly feelings towards the boy. And we were cheated out of seeing it.
Hook and Cora: We saw more of this than a lot of other relationships, but nowhere near enough. How did they go from literally trying to and/or almost killing each other to being partners who tease each other with comments like, “Why do you still doubt me?” and are obviously banging in kinky ways. I want to know more about how that relationship developed. I want to know more about how sincere it was (or wasn’t), because it feels deeper than the usual superficial villain pair-up that we usually see, and this holds true when they’re reunited in S5 in the Underworld. There is a warmth between them in that scene that points to a sincere friendship that I wish we’d seen more of.
Hook and Emma: This one we get to see in its entirety, and it’s beautiful.
Hook and Tinkerbell: Again, we’re TOLD they had a history, but mostly through off-handed comments, implications, their consistently friendly/flirty demeanor towards each other, and behind-the-scenes confessions that the actors were told they’d had a fling.
Hook and David: Another one we get to see pretty thoroughly. Bless.
Hook and Belle: Okay, so he knocked her out and almost killed her on their first meeting. Aaaaaaand he tried to kill her on their second meeting. And he shot her and erased her memories on their third. But… it got better! This is one of the few relationships the show stuck with and actually gave us glimpses of throughout the seasons, making it feel like a genuine friendship that was growing deeper and more meaningful as time went by.
Hook and Ariel: This one goes without saying. Yes, they had some ups and downs and some bludgeonings and slaps, but ultimately, these two are friends. And Wish Hook and Wish Ariel’s friendship just proves this all the more. However, as usual, the kind of “blink and you’ll miss it” acknowledgement of this friendship makes it all too easy for people to dismiss it as “fanon”.
Hook and Henry: Another pairing that we got to see develop in canon, thank goodness. Hook went from the “cool pirate guy” to the guy his mom was dating to a true member of his family and his step-father. And it’s great. And S7 gave us Henry meeting another version of his step-father, this time as a grown man, and forging a genuine friendship with him, as well.
Hook and Ursula: Granted, they definitely weren’t friends when Ursula came back to Storybrooke, but she sailed on Hook’s ship with him and his crew for some time before Hook was forced to betray her. And when he made right on this betrayal years later and got her voice back for her and reunited her with her father (who admitted his guilt in Hook’s betrayal as well as apologizing for his role in it), Ursula was clearly willing to forgive Hook and help him in return. I think, given the positive foundation of their relationship and their eventual reconciliation, a friendship could’ve (and should’ve) blossomed here.
Hook and Nemo: Aw, geez. The show sets Nemo up as a fatherly figure to the men he “rescues” aboard his ship. He’s clearly a father figure to Hook’s half-brother, Liam. He openly states that he wants to help Killian similarly, literally telling Hook he wants him to join their family. And while events in the past led to Killian leaving, it’s obvious in the present-day scenes between these two that Nemo still sees Killian as a part of his “family” - and that Killian feels the same. That the show cast him off entirely to shores unseen is a damn crime.
Hook and Liam: Another brother. Another Liam. Another family member that Killian begins to bond with… and then gets literally shipped off the show.
Hook and Snow White: Out of nowhere, they have a close moment on the docks where she kisses his cheek and says she’s glad he’s the one Emma’s found to share her life with. Sweet. He also calls her “Mummy” in a later scene, during the finale. Hilarious. BUT WHERE’S THE REST OF IT?! And by “it” I mean the rest of their damn relationship?!
Hook and Jasmine: These two form an entirely unlikely (but delightful) friendship in S6. However, we’re kind of just expected to assume there’s a friendship there by the closeness they share (their frank conversation on the Nautilus) and the smiles and warmth they consistently address each other with.
Hook and Black Beard: Now THIS is how you do a “frenemies” ship right here. They’re like the Itchy and Scratchy of Once. They try to kill each other. They play cards. They try to kill each other again. They take over the other one’s ship. They talk about their lady troubles. They try to kill each other. They offer unsolicited advice. They go portal hopping together. They randomly have a swordfight. They abandon each other to child natives. They try to kill each other again. They hunt for treasure. They plot out elaborate schemes to give friends a good adventure. This one’s gold.
Wish Hook and Regina: Oh, goodness. S7 gives us so many subtle touches, smiles, and intimate moments between these two that those watching for such things are convinced something more than friendship was brewing there - but it was done SO subtly that those who weren’t watching for it literally missed it all entirely. Whether they were building up something for an eventual romance or just presenting them as extremely close friends, there was definitely something purposely put there in canon. Hopefully, we would’ve found out more about it in S8, had we been lucky enough to get one.
Wish Hook and Alice: Finally, another relationship we’re SHOWN and allowed to enjoy as it progresses - both in flashbacks and in the present day. BLESS.
Wish Hook and Jack/Nick: Here’s the thing. Nick is introduced to the show in S7 before the ten year jump to when the curse is cast. And he’s shown still with the group at Lucy’s tenth birthday party - and is obviously caught up in the curse itself. So that’s over ten years that Hook knew Jack in the New Enchanted Forest. Regina, fully awake in Hyperion Heights, tells Lucy that her father (Henry), Rogers (Hook) and Nick (Jack/Hansel) were like the three Musketeers back in the fairytale world and convinces her to set up a “guys night out” for them. The focus of this is, of course, on Henry’s relationships with Hook and Nick, but from Regina’s comments and the fact that all three men are set up to hang out together as a trio, we can assume Hook and Jack were good friends. As usual, we’re subtly TOLD the man has a friend… and left to fill in the blanks for ourselves :P
Wish Hook and Zelena: This is another subtle one. When Zelena shows up in the New Enchanted Forest looking for her daughter, she’s not that friendly to the Hook she finds there. In fact, she dismisses him outright and tells him to piss off. But he stands up to her, sticks with her, manages to even impress her a little… and ultimately helps save Robin’s life (and Zelena’s). By the end of the episode they share, Zelena is obviously warming up to the pirate - and when Kelly encounters him in Hyperion Heights, her fondness for him is visible in spite of the danger she’s in and his own obliviousness (”It’s Detective, actually…”).
Wish Hook and Robin: Obviously, they’re going to have a familial relationship once Robin and Alice get married, but it’s obvious from the show that they both have deep feelings and great respect for each other already. Hook, thinking he’s on his last legs and going to die soon, takes it upon himself to ask Robin to look after Alice when he’s gone. That denotes a great trust and affection for her. And, similarly, Robin respectfully asks for his blessing (what was once customary is, in Robin’s more modern generation, considered old fashioned and unnecessary) and insists that she will do whatever it takes to keep him alive to see their wedding. This exchange shows us a lot of warm feelings between them.
Rogers and Tiana: These two are even sweeter than her beignets. And unlike some of the subtle friendships he’s had, this one’s a little more obvious.
Wish/Hook and Rumplestiltskin: Just when you thought it was safe to get trapped in a snowglobe with your arch nemesis… This one was just bizarre, really. After literally years in real time and centuries of show time being SHOWN how much these two hate each other… the show decided to TELL us in S7 that, actually, they were the closest thing the other one had to a friend that whole time. Sure, Jan. I try to murder all of my friends multiple times, as well as trying to make them (and their loved ones) suffer as much as possible. Some people love the twist, some people hate it… but in either case, it’s just WEIRD.
Ships I Left Off: I’m gonna be honest here. As much as I enjoyed Robin Hood and Hook’s scenes together, I never really bought them as being the best of friends. They seemed more like acquaintances to me, and I think the fandom colored them as besties based more on the friendship of the actors than on the actual canon content of the show. And even though Elsa and Arthur both spent episodes “adventuring” with Hook and he obviously grew to (or just did) like both of them, I don’t really feel like either of those led to lasting friendships that persisted beyond the “buddy adventure” episode they shared. I also left off crack ships and any ships that are entirely fanon creations.
So! In closing, I’d like to contend that it isn’t so much that Killian Jones needs more friendships… THE SHOW JUST NEEDED TO LET US SEE THE ONES HE’S FREAKING GOT.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

Best Underrated Scene: Gilmore Girls - 1x06 Rory’s Birthday Parties
This is the sweet spot. This is where season one starts to pick up...in as much as Gilmore Girls “picks up.” I think in general the characters are fleshing out and as such we can enjoy their scenes even more as we progress through the story. Particularly, and always, the scenes between Lorelai and Emily. They have a good chunk of my favorite scenes throughout the series, but in general their scenes together are much revered and lauded(I think)...so I don’t think their scenes are really “underrated” a lot of the time. But I think an argument could be made that the scene I chose could rate as such.
Lorelai and Emily talk in Lorelai’s Bedroom
I think this may be the only time Emily is shown in Lorelai’s room? It makes sense that we don’t see Emily in this room very often (if ever again). As evidenced by this episode and Lorelai’s comment that her parents have “never been to [her] house,” Lorelai likes to keep her world separated from her parents in very stark and literal ways. After this first trip over, Emily and Richard make a few more visits to Lorelai’s house, but it is always a rather odd jolt to see them in this small (by their standards), cozy house and Lauren Graham always plays up her discomfort whenever the two enter Lorelai’s turf.
In this scene, however, I’d say that Lorelai’s general anxiety regarding her parents’ visit is somewhat assuaged even though Emily is in her room. Earlier in the episode we saw Lorelai and Rory in Lorelai’s old bedroom at her parents’ house. It was frilly, light pinks and creams, a large number of porcelain dolls, and impressionistic paintings. There are elements of Lorelai, but for the most part it is cold and removed - more of a room in a bed and breakfast than anything reflecting the Lorelai we have come to know. Lorelai’s room that she’s cultivated as an adult is obviously a closer approximation to who she is. There are still floral patterns (Lorelai loves a certain type of “girly”), bathrobes with silly prints hanging on the closet, clothes flung over her bed and armchair, haphazard sewing materials, a stack of magazines. It is lived in, warm, and maybe slightly adolescent, but purposefully so.
Lorelai sees her mother leaving the festivities and follows her up to her bedroom. Emily is looking at Lorelai’s blanket contemplatively when Lorelai interrupts her thoughts. “I made that,” she says, “from Rory’s old baby clothes.” Lorelai is always proud of her ability to make something from the scraps of something else. This is her life. Emily responds, “Hope you washed them first.” This is also the heart of Emily. It is partially a jab, partially an element of her controlling behavior, but it’s also meant to be constructive and helpful. Her controlling is always meant to be helpful. Lorelai makes a quick joke and lets this one slide off her back. She doesn’t always, but this isn’t a particularly pointed remark and Lorelai can, at times, pick her battles with her mom.
“Quite an assortment of characters you’ve assembled down there,” Emily continues. This seems to only be a means to segue into asking about Luke (”this man with the ice”). Something that is always fun is Emily’s immediate perceptiveness of Lorelai and Luke’s feelings for each other. She ain’t no dummy. “How long have you been seeing him?” she asks Lorelai, who immediately giggles like a school girl and denies that Luke is anything other than a friend. Emily continues, “He seems to like you.” Lorelai asks how she’s judging this and Emily says that Luke looked at Lorelai, “Like you were about to give him a lap dance.” Ah HA! Emily is funny. Lorelai seems to think her humor sprang from nothing, but this is exactly where she gets it. Lorelai continues to giggle sheepishly and insist that Luke did not look at her like that (I mean, c’mon girl, yes he did). Graham of course nails the discomfort with being confronted with feelings that she’s not ready for, along with maybe some excitement or flush at thinking that maybe Luke did look at her that way. Lorelai stays in deep denial of her feelings for Luke for SO long. Which is something people do, especially with someone they are friends with or who they see as possibly complicating things. At a certain point this becomes pretty unbelievable for these two, but for now it works.
Emily remains unconvinced (as she should) and again reads her daughter perfectly, “You’re pleased...you’re pleased that the Ice Man looked at you like a porterhouse steak.” Emily is definitely judging her daughter’s taste in men (as she will continue to do), but she doesn’t let that really seep into this conversation. She’s mostly just finding out the information that she can and saving her judgements for herself (a rare occurrence for Emily). Lorelai diffuses the conversation with a joke again and Emily smiles knowingly and moves on to a picture on Lorelai’s night stand.
The conceit that Lorelai would keep a photo of herself in a leg cast on her night stand is...odd, but we roll with it. Her room is cluttered enough that it doesn’t really feel out of place. I can almost hear some discussion between Rory and Lorelai wherein to prove some point about the day some random thing happened she pulls out this picture and just never put it back. So we move on to why it’s here for the scene. “What’s this...you’re wearing a cast,” Emily says with surprise. “Yeah, that’s when I broke my leg,” Lorelai says casually. It happened three years ago during a yoga class in which Lorelai tried to out-yoga a blond “pretzel chick” and took some kind of a fall. Emily continues past this rather silly story, “I never knew you broke your leg.” She is clearly hurt. You can almost feel her motherly desire to nurse her child back to health. But of course she doesn’t have to, because Lorelai never told her about it.
“If I had been really sick you would have known,” Lorelai assures Emily. But it’s not much assurance. What does “really sick” mean if a full leg cast doesn’t prompt a phone call to your mother? The women take a beat and in this moment and the glances to the floor so much is said. Perhaps Lorelai feels a bit guilty for having kept this information to herself. She can certainly sense the hurt and disbelief radiating from Emily. This episode saw the two getting along better than ever before. Emily shopping for Rory’s present with Lorelai and listening to her advice, as well as serving pudding at Friday Night Dinner, instilled a hope in Lorelai for the future of their relationship. Maybe she feels a bit wrong for denying this possibility of reconciliation for so long. But she won’t admit to it - not now and probably not ever. She’s too stubborn to admit that she kept her parents at bay longer than necessary and Emily’s too stubborn to say that she is hurt in this moment. They are, again, more similar than either of them admits.
“Well,” Emily changes the subject yet again as she puts the picture down, “you know you could get a maid in here once a week to at least tidy the place up.” Her defenses are back up as she goes into her helpful nag mode and Lorelai responds, “I like it cluttered.” Of course she does. Emily drops it with a smile again. She is probably annoyed, but it also reads as amused by Lorelai’s antics. She doesn’t understand it, but she’s not going to fight it now. Emily excuses herself to check on Richard and Lorelai calls her back briefly to let her know (with a sincerity that is rare for Lorelai) that it was nice that she came to the party. “It meant a lot to...Rory, really,” Lorelai says. You can see that she wants to say “to me,” but she’s not quite ready to own up to the fact that she wants her parents to be in her life in some capacity. So she uses Rory as the excuse, as she does for many of her interactions with her parents. “Well she is my granddaughter after all, I should be here,” Emily says. “I totally agree,” Lorelai responds. The same could be said of a mother and daughter and is being said subtexually. Rory is a stand in for Lorelai. The whole deal that was struck at the beginning of the season was not only for Rory, but for Lorelai. Emily wants Lorelai in her life and you can see that clearly here. She will never have the daughter she envisioned, but she never fully gives up on Lorelai either. Lorelai is often more willing to give up on her parents, but in this scene you see her reach out with a rare sincerity and vulnerability and let Emily know that she is welcome and wanted (of course not always, but in this moment at least).
On her way out Emily begins to straighten the bed, but she leaves it when Lorelai asks her to. She’ll always have the impulse to straighten up and change Lorelai’s decisions, but at least in this moment she respects her daughter’s wishes and attempts to let go of her urges.
Emily takes away from this conversation that she doesn’t “know her daughter at all,” as she tells Richard later. She says this because of all Lorelai has kept from her over the last several years, but as Emily’s keen observations regarding Luke indicate, in some ways she will always know Lorelai better than Lorelai knows herself. Of course it is painful to feel excluded from your daughters life and history, her house and her heart, but all is not lost.
I feel this scene is slightly underrated because it’s not one of Lorelai and Emily’s big fights, nor is it particularly funny, nor is it a moment of complete bonding between the two (like the shopping earlier in the episode). It is a quieter scene the pulls and prods and slightly pushes the two back into each other’s orbits while also bringing up a new type of pain for Emily (the particularlities of what she has missed in her daughter’s life probably sting even more than the vagueness of loss she felt before). There is so much time to recover between the two and so much for them to learn about each other. It’s a bittersweetness as they mend the fight that occurred earlier without directly addressing it by simply agreeing that Emily deserves to be in Rory’s (and subsequently Lorelai’s) life. These two have so much to go through together.

Fic: A Science Experiment (2.4k)
So this is the first of the fics I wrote while I was away.  It was inspired by a prompt on my previous ‘discussing awkward things’ fic (which is ... apparently becoming a thing, now) Knowing what to do, and which said:  My kingdom for your take on the apartment reconciliation scene :) from E7.  Now, there are a thousand ways that could go so this is just one idea I have and it takes place some time after the camera fades out on that reunion scene.  Enjoy!
“So that happened,” Isak says.
He’s flopped back on the bed, his limbs flung wherever they fall, his body’s defined lines emphasized by the way he’s lying and the sight does something to Even.
They’ve never been naked together like this before, and the fact that Isak is so unselfconscious makes Even’s head swim.  He hopes he gets to see this sight forever; Isak breathless and sated, lying in a post-orgasm haze, completely unconscious of his own body and in no rush to cover himself.  Still. There’s one small thing intruding on the delight.  Isak’s voice is breathless and shaky, but Even can’t tell if it’s from the release of his orgasm or from nerves.  It’s never been easy to tell with Isak what it is he’s thinking, and it’s particularly difficult now after their recent separation.  Despite the sex, Even can feel the distance between them like a canyon.  He sighs.
“It did, yeah,” he says.  Rolls so he can reach out to Isak, and runs his fingers along his jaw.  Isak’s face goes slack, blissful.  It makes something ache inside Even in a painfully sweet way.  “Was it … okay?” Even adds, trying to navigate the shores of Isak’s mind as best he can -- and at the moment, that’s going to have to be by actually asking him.  This is new territory, and Even’s still trying to chart it.
Isak’s eyes narrow in suspicion, which is, frankly, more adorable than it has any right to be, and Even is hard pressed to resist anything he wants. Apparently, this is going to be what post-sex life is like for them. Even is going to be putty in Isak’s hands and give him everything he wants.
“Of course it was fucking okay,” Isak says, his tone disbelieving.  “I just got an actual blow job from an actual god …”
“Actual god, huh?” Even laughs, charmed as always by the way Isak can so easily express his emotions, as if they just are and he fully accepts them.
“Shut up,” Isak says with an irritated growl.  “You’re just fishing for more compliments now.”  He looks fond though, and hopeful.  As if he’s warily enjoying this moment, and the ease and banter between them.
That side of Isak, the hesitant hope he’s showing, recalls Even to himself and what he was really trying to ask.  “I mean, it’s nice to know I did a decent job …” he says, and Isak snorts.
“It was passable.”
“Passible!?!  You just called me a god!” Even’s trying to be chill about this, but every passing moment makes Isak a little more perfect, and he’s finding it hard to focus.  Finding it hard not to laugh his joy with every new utterance Isak makes.
Isak’s expression softens at the faux-affronted tone and he smiles.  “I did,” he says with a fond pat on Even’s shoulder.  “And … you were.”  At Even’s raised brow, Isak smiles.  “You were decent.  More than decent.”  He looks down for a moment, embarrassed maybe if the stain of red on his cheeks is any indicator.  “It was great.”
“Okay,” Even says, not even bothering to hide his relief.  It’s not like he’s been agonizing over this or anything; it was, if anything, a spur of the moment decision in the heat of the situation.  But he’s not going to lie and say he’s never thought about it, either.  He’s wondered reasonably often what it would be like to do.  Thought about what Isak might like, and if Even would be any good at it.  “It was my first one.  Giving one, I mean.”
Isak’s about to open his mouth, presumably to make some comment on that, but Even holds up his hand to stall him.  He needs to get this off his chest before he loses his nerve or Isak distracts him completely.  “But that’s not actually why I asked if it was okay.”  Even takes a deep breath, looks over at Isak to calm himself.  “I kind of … we didn’t talk … before.  So I guess I just need to be sure you’re okay with … with us … doing … you know, that.”  He hates that he’s so hesitant, that asking Isak if sex is something he’s okay with is so scary. He really should have said something before they got to this point.
“Oh,” Isak says, his eyes wide with a new comprehension, and he grins suddenly.  “I … yeah.”  He sucks in a breath, looks a little shy when he adds, “I’m happy with doing that with you … whenever you like.  Really.  I wanted to; you got that, right?”
“Okay, whew,” Even says, pulling Isak in a little closer, wanting that closeness and reassurance of his body so warm next to Even’s.  He’s happier now; Isak seems sincere and it’s enough to know they’re on the same page with this.  “I thought so, but you know … since we hadn’t before, and all, I really should have asked first.”
Isak laughs a little at that.  “I think the way I was undressing you might have been a hint.”
“You have a point,” Even says with a laugh of his own.  He’s feeling a lot less concerned with just a few sentences of conversation and thinks he really should say some of the other things that are weighing on his mind.
They lie like that for several minutes.  They’re still naked and there are sticky messes everywhere, but Even’s unwilling to disturb this fragile peace, even though he knows it’s probably better that he does.  It’s delicate between them, and the acknowledgement of the lost couple of weeks is a heavy silence in the air.
Even knows he needs to say the words.  He should just screw up his courage and say it:  I’m bipolar, and you telling me you’re better off without mentally ill people … well it hurt me, and it scares me.  But he can’t do it.  There’s a weight and a meaning to those words, and a terrifying possibility that comes along with that admission.  The possibility that Isak means what he said before.  That if Even risks it all, then he could lose it all.  And now that he’s here, now that Isak is lying with him, his body pliant and warm and trusting, Even doesn’t have the strength to make that leap.
Unfortunately, Even knows he has to do something; they can’t leave all the open wounds bleeding between them like this while they ignore them all in favor of sex and teasing, much as that would be his preferred option.  So he stirs a little, looks at Isak who also appears to be deep in concentration.  Even takes a steadying breath, both to counter the effect of how beautiful that sight is, and to prepare himself for what he has to say.  To settle himself before he speaks of all the things that sit so wide in the spaces between them.  Things like Sonja, and where they should take this from here.  His preparation is interrupted by Isak, however.
“You know you said that was your first one?” Isak asks softly, and there’s fragility in his voice that makes Even’s heart ache and draws his attention away from his own thoughts.
“Mmm,” Even agrees, wrapping his arm around Isak’s shoulder and pulling him in as close as he can.
“It was … it was my first, too.”  His voice is barely a whisper and Even can hardly make it out.  “Getting one, I mean.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
There’s a vulnerability there which makes Even’s heart ache even more.  It’s obviously something Isak’s a little ashamed of; his body language is all taut lines and anxious twitches as he makes the confession.  Even’s not sure what he can do to make it easier for him, so he just smiles.
“That’s chill.”
“Chill?” Isak says, and his voice is half amused laugh, half outrage.
“Yeah.” Even kisses his hair.  “That means I could be the literal worst at it and you’d still think I was a god.”
That startles a delighted laugh out of Isak, and his body releases some of its tension.  “You’re a fucking dork,” he says.
“What?  Where’s the lie?” Even demands with another laugh and a fond kiss just because he can.
Isak huffs out another small laugh, but then falls silent.  Even gives himself the moment to enjoy being here, trails his fingers through Isak’s hair.  The curls spring back around his fingers, making pleasantly random patterns as they fall.  Isak hums his contentment, and wriggles even closer.  It’s so reminiscent of the first night Even spent here, only with a lot fewer clothes, that he feels the pull of nostalgia.  It’s also very different; it may only have been a few small weeks, but they’re very different people now.  At least, Even knows he’s changed, and he’s sure everything that’s happened must have affected Isak too.  In fact, he saw it in his drawn face and listless body language the few times he’d seen him since that fateful day in the locker room.  This whole thing between them … it’s all still new and exciting, heady in a way Even hasn’t felt in a very long time, but there are also all those layers of history lying in the bed with them.
“Would you want that?” Isak asks abruptly, startling Even out of his thoughts and leaving him blinking in confusion.
“Huh?”
“A blow job,” Isak says bluntly, proving that his thoughts have been travelling on a very different track to Even’s.  He drops the worries that had been swarming, and lets Isak draw him onto this much more pleasant topic.
“Well,” Even says, adopting a fake-contemplative tone.  “I’m never going to say no to that.  I fucking love them.”
Isak smirks at that, but now there are anxious lines forming between his brows.  “It wouldn’t be your first, though,” he says, and there’s a thin thread of anxiety running through his voice as well.  “So what if it’s terrible?”
“That wasn’t my first handjob, either, and it was pretty fucking awesome.”
“That’s different,” Isak says with a scowl.  “I do that to myself, so I know … stuff.”
He’s defiant.  Juts his chin up and stares at Even, who can see the fear that he won’t measure up sitting behind the challenging look.
“You know it’s not a competition, right?”
“I know,” Isak sighs, and there’s red staining his cheeks again as he drags his eyes away.  “But it still feels … I dunno.  Like I have to live up to what you had before.  Like if I don’t, you might … get bored.”
Even gets it; he knows what that’s like.  Remembers the way he fumbled with Sonja when she’d come into their relationship with more experience than he did.  But at the same time, this is Isak.  He’s so beautiful and his mere touch lights up Even’s body in a way he’s never had before, not even with Sonja.  Or in a different way, anyway.
“I don’t think it’ll be an issue,” he says, drawing Isak into another firm hug, and tries to kiss the worry off his lips.  “Just looking at you is enough to get me horny.  Having your lips on my dick …” Even feels his body reacting as he says the words, let alone if it actually happened, and he grins.  “Well … you can feel what even the idea of it does to me.”
Even moves so he’s pressed against Isak and can show him exactly what he means.  Isak’s eyes widen as he feels just how hard Even is, then his face slips immediately into a calculating smirk.
“I guess,” he says, pressing back making Even’s head light as he feels the hard, hot length of Isak’s arousal.  “I guess maybe I need some practice.  Maybe I should conduct a science experiment.  You know … figure out what is the best way to do it.”
“My science nerd,” Even says, feeling fondness humming through him again as isak’s eyes go distant and misty as he thinks it through.  Even pretends to consider the idea, pretends to take his time before he says in a faux put-upon voice, “I guess if you really need the practice and want to do this experiment, I can help.  Offer myself up as your practice test subject.”
“How selfless of you,” Isak says, a small grin crinkling the corners of his eyes.
“Anything to help advance your scientific experiments.  You just need to pay me in blow jobs; I’m a simple man.”
The attempt at nonchalance is somewhat ruined by the gasps he makes at the end as Isak presses closer, making Even see stars as his sensitive dick reacts to the proximity of Isak’s.
“A true gentleman,” Isak says, laughing as he drags his body up Even’s to kiss him.  It’s all looking very promising for a few moments before Isak sits up and swings his legs over the side of the bed.
“Where are you going?” Even asks, pouting.
“If I’m going to start this experiment, I need a clean slate.” Isak gives Even a small smile over his shoulder.  “And that means you have to have a shower.”
Even’s dismay must show on his face because Isak stands and holds his hand out to him.
“Don’t worry,” he says with a wink.  “I need to be sure my test subject is properly cleaned ready for the experiments.  So I’ll join you.  You know … just to make sure it’s done thoroughly.”
As Isak draws Even behind him out of the bedroom, he thinks it’s not so bad.  It’s nice to be with someone who will tease him like this, someone who will actively try to do things to make it easier with them.  Someone who isn’t scared to push himself and learn new things.  The fragility of the earlier evening is gone, at least for now, and while Even knows he still has a lot that needs to be addressed, he’s happy to be here doing this with Isak right now.  It’s more than he’d ever hoped for before he got isak’s first text this evening.  And this time … well, this time Even’s going to do all he can to ensure he doesn’t risk losing it all.
