Post 9/11 Trivia
Most folks on this site were either children on September 11, 2001, or weren’t even born yet.  But America went crazy for about a year afterwards.  Here’s some highlights that I remember that might not be in your history books:
There was national discussion on whether or not Halloween should be canceled because…fuck if I know why.  After planes crashed into buildings in NYC it follows that 6-year-olds in Iowa shouldn’t be allowed to dress up like Batman and ask their neighbors for candy, I guess.  (Halloween wasn’t canceled, by the way.)
On a similar note, people asked if comedy - any sort of comedy - was appropriate anymore, ever.
People sold shitty parachutes to suckers “in case your building gets attacked and you have to jump out the window.” There were honest-to-God news reports warning people not to jump out of the window with shitty mail-order parachutes because they wouldn't work.
As a follow-up to the attacks, someone mailed anthrax to some prominent politicians and news anchors - you know, famous people - along with some badly-written notes about “you cannot stop us, death to America, Allah is good” and after that every time some random dumbass found a package in the mail they didn’t recognize they thought that the terrorists were targeting them, too.
Everyone was similarly convinced that their town was going to be the next target, even if they were a little town in the middle of nowhere. "Our town of Bumblefuck, South Dakota (population 690) has the largest styrofoam pig statue west of the Mississippi! Terrorists might fly planes into that too! It's a prime target!"
People started taping up their windows and trying to make their houses or apartments airtight out of fear of chemical and biological attacks. There were news reports warning people that turning your house into an airtight box was a bad idea because, y'know, you need air to breathe.
"[X] supports terrorism!" and “if we do [X], the terrorists win!” were used as arguments for everything.  "Some rich Arab you never heard of donated to his organization that backs Hamas which backs al-Queda, and also owns stock in a holding company that has partial ownership of the Pringles company, so if you eat Pringles you're supporting terrorism!" "The terrorists want to tear down our freedoms and our way of life and rule us through fear! Eating what you want is one of our freedoms as Americans! If you're afraid to eat Pringles, the terrorists win!" (I promise you that this sort of argument is in no way hyperbole.) (This argument is how Halloween was saved, by the way.  “If we cancel Halloween, the terrorists win!”)
People worked 9/11 into everything, and I mean everything, whether it was appropriate or not.  If you went to the grocery store the tortilla chips would remind you to support the troops on the packaging. Used car sales would be dedicated to our brave first responders. You couldn't wipe your ass without the toilet paper rolls reminding you to never forget the fallen of 9/11, and again, this is not hyperbole. My uncle, who lived in Ohio and had never been to New York except to visit once in the 70′s, died of a stroke about 8 months after 9/11, and the priest brought up the attacks at the eulogy.
On a similar local note, on the day of 9/11, after the towers went down, gas stations in my home town immediately jacked up gas prices.  The mayor had the cops go around and force them to take them back down.  I doubt any of that was legal.
Before 9/11, Christianity in America - and religion in general - was on a downward swing, with reddit-tier atheism on the upswing. Religion was outdated superstition from a bygone age. The day after 9/11? Every single church was PACKED. (This wasn't a bad thing, but the power-hungry on the Evangelical Right saw this as a golden opportunity to grab power and influence.)
EDIT: By Popular Demand - Freedom Fries. I initially left these off because they came a couple years after the initial panic and most people thought they were kind of absurd (and I don't recall anyone really going along with it other than maybe some local diners here and there). France didn't want to get involved in our world policing so some folks were like "TRAITORS!" and wanted to call french fries "Freedom Fries" instead, so as to stick it to the French.
Besides dumb shit like that…it’s really hard to overstate how completely the national mood and character changed in the span of a day, or how much of the current culture war is a result of the aftermath. (9/11 was the impetus for the sharp rise in power of the Evangelical Right, who made themselves utterly odious and the following backlash helped the rise of the current Progressive Left, for instance.)

Keys to finding a quality tiny home builders
When you decide to build your own tiny home, you will want to make sure you find a company that’s right for you. You want to hire some tiny home builder who has experience but is economical and can build a beautiful tiny home for you on time. See other homes built by them. Talk to the homeowners and ask them about the builders and how much they like their work. If things were built in your budget and on time, whether the builder was ready to answer calls, and deal with your problems. The internet is a great source when you are searching for tiny home builders. You can find out whether a civil suit has been filed against the builder by visiting their website. You can choose from hundreds of flexible home designs. Each house can be customized both in terms of size and features.
Keys to finding a quality tiny home builders
Websites also provide free estimates online based on the model that you choose for your tiny home. Apart from this, you can also ask your friends and family if they have had deals with a particular builder. You can also ask the builder for references to jobs they have completed. Tiny home builders in the US offer additional features that can be added to your home plan and they also provide services of after-sales and warranties in case a minor issue arises or in case something goes wrong. You should be firm but not rigid. It may take longer than you expect for your home builder to get the house ready. You don't need to act over the top or be fake. But builders take pride in what they do; This is their job. They really appreciate the compliments you give them on what they are working on.
The second step is to choose a log home builder. This can be done in many different ways. A good option is to ask the Realtor for a referral. A modular home builder won't harass about hiring subcontractors for electrical wiring, insulation, and plumbing because they're all available in the factory. There is simply a great range of tiny home builders in New York, Florida, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, and Colorado in the USA who create masterpieces out of homes to satisfy all the wants and desires of the homebuyer.
Tiny home builders in the USA are adopting green building methods that focus on design and construction methods to create an energy-efficient and green environment for tiny homes. Choosing from a list of best builders in the USA should include finding one that has a reputation for building quality homes. You should also look for someone who has a lot of experience. The tiny homeowner and home builder must agree on a quality standard that is set before the project begins so that everything is in black and white to eliminate any disagreements later.

Courtney’s green Mercury guitar.
This is a hugely detailed back story so bear with me. Less than 100 of these guitars were ever made – some even say as little as 30.
Tim George and Danny Babbitt were the original creators and designers behind Mercury Guitars – based in Atlanta, Georgia.
They started on the aesthetic development of the Mercury in early ’92. The actual shape was inspired by the smaller Rickenbackers.
It was originally called the “Gemini” – they wanted a name which was timeless and somehow they settled on ‘Mercury’.
The guitars were designed to be mass produced. This is the reason for the string through body design, it was a bunch cheaper - they actually got the parts from the hardware store.
The first Mercury prototype had a brown sunburst body. At this point, things started to go fast for Tim & Danny.
The original ones built were of various colours. Danny worked during the day at a huge store in Atlanta called Rhythm City and they allowed him to put the guitars in the store. They sold one to the band Collective Soul, they sold one to a guy in a band called Head Hunter. Another one was sold to the guitar player for Porno For Pyros. One was sold to Guy Picciatto of Fugazi.
They built a metallic green Mercury (a special vintage General Motors paint colour, a paint typically used for cars) for Tim personally. One night, Danny saw Nirvana was in town and he wanted to try and get it in front of Kurt. Somehow he got backstage and he met Courtney Love and she fell in love with the vintage green Mercury guitar and asked if he could sell it to her. Of course they could! They were now on cloud 9. This was huge. Soon after they sold Courtney the guitar, they went to another Nirvana show (they think Mississippi) and got back stage again. They met the band (minus Kurt) and pre-sold a guitar to Pat Smear and somehow got the go ahead to build one for Kurt. This was “off the charts” (according to Tim) and they went home in a daze. Pretty soon after this, Kurt passed away and Courtney went on tour.
Things after that got pretty tough for Tim & Danny – life became tumultuous due to some personal happenings (bad landlords, getting kicked out of their share house and having to get rid of their guitar making tools) and they grew apart emotionally and lost their passion for making guitars together.
Right before they left their home in Georgia, Courtney had called to ask for more guitars for the tour. This was not possible. “I don’t think we even replied. This was foolish because she probably would have paid for us to build a shop or at least bought us the tools we needed.” – Tim.
Some time passed.
“I saw the Hole “Violet” video one night at a bar and got to see our guitar make music video history. You will notice the Mercury 3+3 headstock in the video and the Mercury pick-ups. I went to see Hole play at Lollapalooza and saw our design on the big stage and cried. A Rolling Stone magazine image of her with the guitar was next. I was happy to have given something back to music/guitar history.” – Tim
The first time she used the Mercury was at Reading Festival in August 1994.
She adorned the guitar with 4 four leaf clover stickers at the bottom of the guitar (sometime between December 1994 and January 1995). One of them peeled off and she stuck it to the top. And the volume and tone knobs were eventually gaffa taped down to stick them in place because Craig Montgomery (Court’s guitar tech) was sick of her fucking with the sound (lol).
The Mercury was absolutely trashed and thrashed on stage during 1994 and 1995. You’ve seen the videos. It was roughed up pretty badly.
By July 1995, Courtney had added a new guitar to her touring repertoire (alongside the Mercury, a Univox among others): the Fender Venus. Seeing her play both the Mercury and Venus interchangeably, it was very evident that the Fender Custom Shop had directly copied the body shape of the Mercury with their normal hockey stick headstock.
I am unsure if this was sheer laziness on Fender’s part but the guys from Mercury didn’t appreciate this – as you can imagine. I think they wanted to sue, but two guys going up against a global giant probably wouldn’t bode well for them. Plus there’s some weird law that says you cannot patent guitar body shapes or something.
By the end of the 95 Hole tour, the Mercury was officially retired. When Hole started touring in 98/99, the Fender Venus was her go-to, alongside the occasional Telecaster or her vintage Gretsch.
Tim and Danny are still friends to this very day and are in constant search for one of the original guitars to come up for sale. They have have no complete Mercury’s left. Let me know if you run across one. They are planning on building the Mercury’s again one day when they get older just for the fun of it.
See below for some other photos: Tim & Danny with one of their Mercury guitars (these examples look like they are semi hollowbody’s rather than the solid body Courtney owned.) The bottom guitar in the stack of guitars picture is an example of a guitars they were in the midst of making for Kurt.

WHW In Memoriam: Unarmed, Murdered Black Americans from History
(Content Warning: Violence, murder, abuse, racism)
Tumblr media
So this is definitely not the same kind of ‘weird’ history I usually post about (and it’s not Wednesday quite yet), but in light of the George Floyd verdict I thought it was important to take a moment to remember some of the unarmed, murdered black Americans throughout our history, most of whom have never received justice. Whether their lives were taken by the police or violent, racist vigilantes, their memories should always be a reminder that though we’ve come a long way, we still have a long, long way to go.
This is in no way a comprehensive list, in fact I start at Emmett Till because the *known* lynchings pre-1955 are too numerous to include in one, two, ten posts. I know I will not have room to include even everyone post 1955 (god there are so many) but please know that all of them, from the unknown to the infamous, from our country’s beginning to today, matter the same.
“History, despite it’s wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.” - Maya Angelou
 1. Emmett Louis Till
Tumblr media
Born: July 25, 1941, Chicago, IL Died: August 28, 1955, Money, MS
Emmett Till was a 14 year-old child from Chicago visiting relatives over his summer break in August of 1955. Unfamiliar with the strictly racist social codes in the American south, he spoke to a white woman at a grocery store, and was accused of flirting with her. A few nights later her husband and his brother abducted Till, brutally beat and mutilated him, and then shot him before letting his body sink into a river. When he was found, his body was barely recognizable even to his mother.
In an act of grief and defiance, his mother held a highly-publicized, open casket funeral to show the brutality of what had happened to her child to the world.
It’s believed that before her death, Carolyn Bryant, the woman from the grocery store, recanted key details from her original story, including that Till whistled or flirted with her.
2. James Earl Chaney
Tumblr media
Born: May 30, 1943, Meridian, Mississippi Died: June 21, 1964, Philadelphia, Mississippi
James Chaney was a 21 year old field/social worker working for Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). He was murdered along with two colleagues, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, by the Ku Klux Klan while they were in Mississippi investigating the burning of a church. The 3 were pulled over by a patrol car being followed by 2 cars full of Klan members, who shot Goodman and Schwerner, beat Chaney, and then shot him 3 times.
3. Michael Donald
Tumblr media
Born: July 24, 1961, Mobile, Alabama Died: March 21, 1981, Mobile, Alabama
Michael Donald was a 20 year-old who on March 21st, 1981 was walking down the street after purchasing cigarettes for his sister. He was chosen at random by a car full of Ku Klux Klan members, angry that a recent Klan members court case had been declared a mistrial. He was beat, hung, and his throat was slit, and was left hanging dead from a tree in a secluded, wooded area.
Three Klansmen were convicted of Donald's murder. Henry Hays was sentenced to death and executed in the electric chair in 1997. James Knowles and Benjamin Cox were sentenced to life in prison. A civil suit against the United Klans of America caused their bankruptcy.
4. Yusef Kirriem Hawkins
Tumblr media
Born: March 19, 1973, Brooklyn, NY Died:  August 23, 1989, Brooklyn, NY
Yusef Hawkins was a 16-year-old black teenager who was shot to death on August 23, 1989, in Bensonhurst, a predominantly Italian-American working-class neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. Hawkins, his younger brother, and two friends were attacked by a crowd of 10 to 30 white youths, with at least seven of them wielding baseball bats. One, armed with a handgun, shot Hawkins twice in the chest, killing him. Hawkins and his brother were in the neighborhood to inquire about a used car.
5. Nicholas Heyward Jr.
Tumblr media
Born: August 26th, 1981 Died: September 27th, 1994
13-year-old Nicholas Heyward Jr. was playing cops and robbers inside the stairwell of a Brooklyn apartment building when officer Brian George mistook the boy’s toy gun for a real gun and shot him in the stomach, killing him.
6. Amadou Diallo
Tumblr media
Born: September 2, 1975, Liberia Died: February 4, 1999, NYC, New York
In the early morning of February 4, Diallo was standing near his building after returning from a meal. At about 12:40 a.m., officers Edward McMellon, Sean Carroll, Kenneth Boss and Richard Murphy were looking for an alleged serial rapist in the Soundview section of the Bronx. While driving down Wheeler Avenue, the police officer stopped his unidentified car and interrogated Diallo, who was in front of his apartment. When they ordered Diallo to show his hands, he supposedly ran into the apartment and reached into his pocket to show his wallet. Soon afterwards the four officers fired 41 shots with semi-automatic pistols, fatally hitting Diallo 19 times. Eye witness Sherrie Elliott stated that the police continued to shoot even though Diallo is already down and that McMellon is still shooting even though he is lying on the ground.
7. Kendra Sarie James
Tumblr media
Born:  December 24, 1981 Died: May 5, 2003, Portland, Oregon
21-year-old Kendra Sarie James was shot and killed by Portland Officer Scott McCollister when she attempted to flee a traffic stop for a minor violation. Portland police initially said it appeared the car had run over the officer's foot but he did not receive medical attention at the scene or at Northeast Precinct. Police repeatedly refused to identify the alleged traffic violation that caused them to stop James and two companions in the car. Police had taken the driver out of the car and was checking his identity when they saw James slide into the Chevrolet’s driver’s seat. Both officers, while standing on the driver’s side of the car, struggled with James to stop her from driving away. One of them fired a taser gun at her to subdue her. McCollister fired a single round from his 9 mm service pistol at James, killing her.
8. Deaunta T. Farrow
Tumblr media
Born: September 7, 1994, West Memphis, Arkansas Died: June 22, 2007, West Memphis, Arkansas
On the night of his death, Deaunta Farrow was walking with his 14-year-old cousin from Farrow’s home to the nearby Steeplechase Apartments where Nash lived.  Along the way the two made a stop at a gas station where they purchased soda pop and chips from the station’s convenience store, and continued down the street. Farrow and Nash turned up the street leading to Nash’s apartment.  At that point two undercover West Memphis police officers, Jimmy Evans and Sammis, who were on a stakeout in a narcotics investigation, appeared from a nearby dumpster.  According to some eyewitnesses, the two police officers confronted the young men and soon afterwards Sammis, noticed something bulging in the 12-year-old’s coat pocket.  As Farrow removed the item, Sammis shot and killed him.
9. Rekia Boyd
Tumblr media
Born: November 5, 1989, Chicago, IL Died: March 21, 2012
On the night of her death, Rekia Boyd was hanging out with friends at Douglas Park on Chicago’s West Side at a party listening to music while having a few drinks. Around 1:00 am, Boyd and some of her friends walked to a nearby liquor store. Around the same time, officer Dante Servin was just finishing his shift on his second job. He was off duty, heading to a fast food restaurant for a hamburger, but Servin drove to Douglas Park after a citizen called police about a noise complaint. Servin saw Boyd and her friends and later claimed they were arguing in an alley. Whether Servin calmly approached Boyd and her friends or was rude and aggressive is still debated. One of Boyd’s friends, Antonio Cross, claimed that Servin attempted to buy drugs from the group. When Cross told Servin to “get his crackhead ass out of here,” Servin pulled a gun, stuck it out of the window of his car and fired into the group, hitting Boyd in the head. She was instantly killed.
10. Eric Garner
Tumblr media
Born: September 15, 1970, NYC, New York Died: July 17, 2014, NYC, New York
On July 17th, 2014, NYPD officers approached Eric Garner on suspicion of selling single cigarettes from packs without tax stamps. After Garner told the police that he was tired of being harassed and that he was not selling cigarettes, the officers attempted to arrest Garner. When Pantaleo placed his hands on Garner, Garner pulled his arms away. Pantaleo then placed his arm around Garner's neck and wrestled him to the ground. With multiple officers pinning him down, Garner repeated the words "I can't breathe" 11 times while lying face down on the sidewalk. After Garner lost consciousness, he remained lying on the sidewalk for seven minutes while the officers waited for an ambulance to arrive. Garner was pronounced dead at an area hospital approximately one hour later.
11. Breonna Taylor
Tumblr media
Born: June 5, 1993, Grand Rapids, Michigan Died: March 13, 2020, Louisville, Kentucky
A narcotics investigation regarding suspected drug dealer Jamarcus Glover, led detectives to Breonna Taylor’s residence in the South End. Glover was a previous acquaintance of Taylor and she was under suspicion for using her home to his receive mail, hide his drugs, and stash money earned from his drug sales. Taylor, who was 26, at the time, lived in a Springfield Drive apartment with her 27-year-old boyfriend Kenneth Walker. Taylor and Walker were asleep in bed, on the night of March 13, 2020, when they were awakened by a loud banging at the front door. Taylor called out, asking who was there, but heard no response. Walker, a licensed and registered gun owner, armed himself and headed towards the front door, when it suddenly came off its hinges.
Under a “no-knock” search warrant, Louisville Metro Police Department Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly, Detective Brett Hankinson, and Officer Myles Cosgrove, all in plainclothes, stormed into the apartment. Taylor’s boyfriend Walker, thinking this was a home invasion robbery, fired one shot in self-defense. Sgt. Mattingly was hit in the leg, and in response, the other officers opened fire, releasing more than twenty rounds into the apartment. Taylor was shot eight times and collapsed in the hallway of her apartment. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
12. Daunte Demetrius Wright
Tumblr media
Died: April 11, 2021 (20 years old)
On April 11 of this year, Daunte Demetrius Wright was fatally shot by police officer Kimberly Ann Potter during a traffic stop and attempted arrest for an outstanding arrest warrant in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. After a brief struggle with officers, Wright was shot at close range by Potter, who had confused her gun with her taser. Officers pulled Wright out of his car and administered CPR, but were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the Civil War ended white racial violence against now freed Black people erupted in Memphis (1866), New Orleans (1866, 1874, 1895 and 1900), Tennessee again in 1868, Mississippi (1871), Louisiana (1873), Alabama (1874), South Carolina (1876 and 1898), and Atlanta, Georgia (1906). During the 1866 riots in Memphis and New Orleans as many as 100 Black men and women were murdered. In Colfax, Louisiana, a white militia murdered as many as 150 Black men in 1873. In 1898, a white mob in Wilmington, North Carolina overthrew an interracial elected government. Rioters destroyed Black-owned property and businesses and killed as many as 300 people.
As the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama documents, between the end of Reconstruction in 1877 and 1950, racial terrorism led by groups like the Ku Klux Klan, including former Confederate soldiers, swept through the South to enforce Jim Crow segregation, protect unfair labor relations, and deny African Americans the right to vote. There were over 4,000 lynchings in twelve Southern states. An estimated six million Black people eventually fled north and west to escape the South’s terrorist regime.
Again, racist violence was not confined to the South. In 1910, after Jack Johnson, the defending heavyweight champion and an African-American defeated James J. Jeffries, a white former champion, anti-Black riots broke out in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Chicago, Columbus, Houston, Lo Angeles, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, and St. Louis. During and after World War I, as African Americans moved north to escape racist violence in the South and to find newly opening factory jobs, they were attacked in Chester, Pennsylvania, East St. Louis, Illinois, Omaha, Nebraska, Wilmington, Delaware, New York, and Chicago. White mobs destroyed hundreds of black homes and businesses on Chicago’s South Side. Over 1,000 Black families were left homeless. The worst white mob violence was in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1921 where white rioters, many deputized by local police, attacked and destroyed homes and businesses in the Greenwood District, a prosperous Black community. The Tulsa massacre is considered the worst incident of racial violence in United States history.
White attacks on Black people erupted again during World War II as African Americans challenged segregation in jobs and housing. Whites rioted against Black workers and families in Beaumont, Texas, Mobile, Alabama, Detroit and Los Angeles. After the war there were a number of anti-Black, anti-integration riots in the Chicago metropolitan area. The Chicago Commission on Human Relations recorded over 350 serious attacks on Black families trying to move into what had been white Chicago neighborhoods between 1945 and 1950 alone, while Chicago Police Department reportedly did not intervene to stop the violence. In Cicero, a Chicago suburb, 4,000 whites attacked an apartment building where a Black family lived in 1951.
During the Civil Rights movement Black and white activists were repeatedly assaulted and a number were murdered, including Rev. George Lee and Lamar Smith in Mississippi in 1955, Herbert Lee in Mississippi in 1961, William Lewis Moore in Georgia in 1963, Medgar Evers in Mississippi in 1963. James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner in Neshoba County, Mississippi in June 1964, Jimmie Lee Jackson, Rev. James Reeb and Viola Gregg Liuzzo in Alabama in 1965, Samuel Ephesians Hammond Jr., Delano Herman Middleton and Henry Ezekial Smith in South Carolina in 1968, and the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. In the 1970s, efforts to racially integrate schools in Boston and Brooklyn led to attacks on school buses.
In December 1986, Michael Griffith was chased onto a highway by a white mob after his car broke down near their Howard Beach, Queens neighborhood in New York City. Griffith was struck and killed by a car. In August 1989, Yusef Hawkins was shot to death after being attacked by a white mob in Bensonhurst Brooklyn in New York City. Hawkins had gone to Bensonhurt to inquire about a used car that was for sale. In August 1997, Brooklyn police tortured Abner Louima in their precinct house.
The advent of the cellphone camera finally exposed the extent of police and vigilante violence to a broader (meaning white) public, and the Black Lives Matter movement demanded that we “Say Their Names”: Ahmaud Arbery (Georgia); Sandra Bland (Texas); Michael Brown (Missouri); Eleanor Bumpus (New York); Philando Castile (Minnesota); George Floyd (Minnesota); Eric Garner (New York); Freddie Gray (Baltimore); Trayvon Martin (Florida); David McAtee (Kentucky); Tony McDade (Florida); Laquan McDonald (Chicago); Tamir Rice (Cleveland); and Breonna Taylor (Kentucky).

If it’s not too much of an ask could I request Travis Phelps head canons of him moving out with his male S/O. Like they decorate the apartment all colourfully and Larry and Ash give them housewarming artwork and everyone’s just happy lmaoo I’m daydreaming about it so much
Oh, my heart 💙
I actually touched on this in this post, and I'm glad I can expound upon it!
Tumblr media
Look at these boys 😌... they look so cozy!
𝕋𝕣𝕒𝕧𝕚𝕤 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝔹𝕀𝕊𝕆 𝕄𝕒𝕜𝕖 𝕒 ℍ𝕠𝕞𝕖
Disclaimer: these headcanons are based off of a character and setting from Sally Face. It is fictional, and moreso, fiction filtered through an individual imagination. Any likenesses to IRL people are purely coincidental. If you are triggered by it, or it's not for you, sorry, send in an ask, and we'll figure out something!
Travis actually has been with BISO since he moved to Nockfell from Mississippi in his junior year of high school, but we'll get into that in another post (next in line 😅).
They both knew that if they wanted to have any kind of happy, open life, they would have to leave Nockfell. Away from the DOG, away from Travis' father.
So BISO and Travis started applying for colleges early, after they got Todd to help them study to ace the SATs, summer after junior year.
After Travis got into a school in New York, BISO applied there too and they were accepted for full scholarships, as long as they kept their GPA above a 3.0.
They actually got the time in senior year to go see their future school one day after class (they had free afternoons due to running out of classes to take), so they went on a Friday afternoon, telling Kenneth it was for a club trip, and they would be staying the weekend.
Sal actually got Ash to forge a note from a teacher for Travis to give to his dad. Just trying to be a good friend.
The boys fell in love with the quaint university town, and they found an apartment building near the school that they decided would be nice to live in.
Kenneth wouldn't let Travis get an after school job, but Travis managed to save up money collected from doing odd jobs, and BISO picked up a shift delivering pizzas four nights a week.
Time spent away from school, work, and familial obligations were spent together, browsing stores for perfect items to decorate and furnish their home.
The soft pink, chenille blankets Travis found. The replica French candle holders BISO bought at a garage sale. The hideous but almost illegally comfortable brown couch they found at the Salvation Army. Even the ridiculous Kiss the Cook apron Travis bought for when BISO bakes (I think BISO is a pie kinda guy).
All of the absolutely perfect items needed.
When the big day came, they packed up everything after Kenneth left to take care of something at the church.
Everything was loaded in record time, a whole apartment's worth of stuff was packed into the U haul trailer hooked to the back of BISO's beat up old truck he brought with him from Mississippi.
In the weeks leading up to this day, BISO and Travis arranged for their move in day, wiring money to the apartment building manager, and securing everything they needed to leave Nockfell.
They told no one where they were moving, just that they were. Travis didn't want to risk his father finding them.
Excited for the fresh start, Teavis started in with the "are we almost there? Where are we. How much longer?"
BISO patiently answered every question. He never really seemed to let anything ruffle his feathers. He was excited too.
They finally got to the complex and Travis picked up the keys while BISO started unpacking the trailer.
The new Phelps residence was on the second story. Unit 27.
The super told him that on their right was another young couple, and to their right lived a chemistry major at the university. On the floor above them lived a little old lady named Ms. Pringle and her Pomeranian, Mr. Business, both of whom Travis will end up enjoying tea with every Wednesday at 1:15, right after lunch.
Travis raced back down to BISO instead of looking at the apartment like the super expected
He hadn't wanted BISO to miss seeing their home together for the first time.
The building super even sweetly volunteered to take a picture of the two opening the door for the first two on BISO's camera, which he had slung over his shoulder in its strap. Travis had copies made and sent one home to Sal and the gang with no return address (they never received it, just as Travis worried. Intercepted by the DOG)
After the super left, they spent the day unpacking and arranging everything.
BISO was excited to try the kitchen, but they were just too tired. They got some takeout menus from the super and ordered in good old, cheap, MSG filled Chinese takeout.
They didn't have cable turned on yet, but they found something tolerable to curl up on the couch together to watch on the antenna.
Travis fell asleep with BISO snugged up against the back of his body, feeling a foreign feeling, which he had voiced to BISO
After Travis finished explaining it, BISO had kissed his forehead and informed him the feeling he couldn't recognize was peace
For the first time in his life, Travis felt peace.

Official Post About Lifestyle Changes
The date is January 28, 2021.
I have not had chickens for a while. It will be 2 years in August. I have been meaning to write something here about all of it, but I either have not had time, or the willpower to go through with it. I was in grieving.
In June of 2019, I took a trip from my shared homestead in Mississippi to Colorado to do some long distance hiking. I left all of my animals in the care of my ex husband’s mother and her then boyfriend.
I trusted them to at least do the bare minimum in my animal’s basic care.
That didn’t happen. They failed night after night to close and lock the coop’s door. They wouldn’t change their water during the day and they did not collect eggs.
When I had service on my phone during the hike, I checked in with them to find out that because they had not closed or locked the coop door at night, several birds were “missing”, with more missing every day.
Instead of simply closing the door and providing a safe space for my dear, darling animals to sleep at night, they decided to buy a game camera to see what was happening to them at night.
Their reasoning had absolutely zero logic, and I was pretty pissed.
They found that raccoons were simply just waltzing into the coops and grabbing birds. The raccoons would drag them away into the woods and feast.
By the time our trip was almost over, all of my ducks were gone. There were only a few chickens left, and the guinea fowl were all intact due to roosting 50ft up in oak trees. My cat was also “missing”.
I was heartbroken, devastated. I had spent so much money, time, energy, and love to build this flock. I wanted to provide my “family” and myself with sustainable, renewable food in case of a natural disaster. No one seemed to value my efforts, or even care to see what my end goal was.
On top of grieving for the loss of my feathered babies, my then husband’s younger brother decided to GO OFF on me during our drive back to Mississippi. He claimed I was selfish, psychotic, uncaring, and manipulative. He screamed at me while we were all stuck in the car. He called me a bitch, he called me a liar, he called me a leech. I was stunned in silence. I had been struggling with my mental health for years, and had contemplated suicide more times than I could count. So, it is no surprise that while we were driving 70mph on the interstate, I seriously contemplated opening the car door and leaping out into traffic.
I turned to my husband, my partner, the love of my life, my support system, to back me up. Defend me. Tell his brother that he was wrong. My husband did nothing of the sort. He remained silent as the verbal barrage from his brother continued.
Everything clicked for me then. My mother in law was a complete nutcase, she blamed me for all of my husband’s shortcomings. She viewed me as a failure for not being the perfect housewife. She only saw me as a burden on her son’s happiness. My husband maintained an emotional distance from me for several years. He refused to be intimate towards me. He never showed an interest in me, my thoughts, my feelings. He never stood up for me or was proud to show me off. He never commended my strengths and triumphs, he only pointed out what he viewed were my failures. My brother in law was more of a nutcase than his mother, physically abusing his dog and neglecting his cat, leeching off of his mother and getting handouts at every possible opportunity, spending his days smoking hundreds of dollars of marijuana, drinking booze, playing videogames.
I had no social life, I wasn’t allowed to have a social life.
I had no friends I could hang out with, all of my friends were online.
No matter how much I did for these people and how much I excelled at everything I did, nothing was ever enough. I was never enough.
No wonder I struggled with mental health, eh?
I came to this realization instantaneously, and demanded to be dropped off at my dad’s house in Westminster, CO.
I had none of my personal belongings besides my hiking and camping stuff. I didn’t care, I just had to get away from these toxic monsters.
My husband and I loosely decided that this would be a “break” for our relationship, and that he would go back to MS to work and save up to move here with me. I agreed and I began working and saving up myself.
We both knew he was never going to come here. We were never going to be together again.
We remained in close contact for a few months after the separation. But the contact and our conversations became fewer and less substantial.
One night, as I was walking home from work, I called and told him that I thought we should break up. He admitted to me that he had removed his wedding ring over three weeks prior. I was understandably hurt by that, but I did understand.
He also informed me that all of the birds were gone or dead except for a couple roosters.
I was more devastated by the loss of my birds than the loss of my marriage. If that doesn’t tell you enough, I don’t know what does!!
My cat never returned.
I asked him if we could keep in contact, and he told me he did not want to talk to me or hear from me for several years. I was once again hurt by this, but with his own mental health issues, I again, understood. He did say he can see us being friends in the future, but now that its been some time, I don’t want to be friends with him. I want the best for him, but I can’t bring myself to expose my mentality to his toxicity and negativity.
I asked again and again, over a period of months, for him to return my belongings. He kept putting it off. I told him I was going to drive down there myself and gather everything i could and dispose of the rest.
He agreed, initially, then banned me from coming only after I requested the time off from work and had friends to accompany me on the journey, He promised he’d send all my stuff in several shipments after he sold my car. I told him he could keep the profit from the sale of my car and use it to send me my stuff.
He ended up sending me ONE box of my stuff. And most of it wasn’t even mine. I was appalled and disgusted that he’d be so careless and inconsiderate.
I sent him messages and requested SPECIFIC items after I received the first box. I got no reply, and no more packages to this day have been sent.
He and his family stole my property, killed my pets, and broke my heart.
Thieves, liars, and extremists, the lot of them.
I grieve daily for the loss of my animals and the torture I was put through for nearly 6 years.
All of that out of the way, let me move on to tell you what this blog will now feature.
I have obviously had a change in lifestyle. I no longer live on homesteading land, I live in a roomy two bedroom apartment with my AMAZING fiance.
My love of chickens, I discovered, was a love for reptiles in general. Cuz birds are reptiles and all that jazz.
When I met my fiance, I was already blown away by his attitude, confidence, and view on life right off the bat! He inspired me, made me want to be better to myself.
Meeting him felt weird, at first. It felt weird because I was waiting for this amazing person to... have a catch. There’s gotta be a red flag somewhere. And if there isn’t... he is probably a psychopath who will eventually turn on me and kill me. No one is that... good.
So I thought to myself, “Welp, gotta find out. I’ll go to his house!”
He had a couple little snakes in his room which I demanded to play with. He happily got them out and I was like “THAT’S the catch? Nah, this just convinces me this guy is... my kind of guy.”
I’ve had a love of snakes since early childhood. Not an interest of passion, but I truly loved interacting with and watching them. I’ve never had an innate fear of any insect, (exclude honeybee, because I didn’t know better at 6 years old), or animal. I love them all and everything they do to contribute. All they experience.
I used to catch wild garter snakes and rat snakes in nets, pet them, show them to my mother occasionally to freak her out, and release them. Then watch them.
There were a mating pair of Oteekee Corn Snakes in my HS yard. Every summer we’d see them, out and about hunting, hiding, climbing... growing. They were bright red and jet black with specks of yellow. I could tell these guys were pretty smart and maybe there was more to snakes than I really thought about ever.
So, being sold on this amazing guy, we up and moved in together. Nice. My paycheck kept going up and up. I was saving a ton. I wanted a car and an apartment as soon as possible.
I got bonus after bonus for working hard at my job and everyone hitting labor targets.
We got a place. Nice.
Both got steady jobs. Nice.
There’s uh, a lot of room in this new place. Nice.
Hey it’s my birthday and I can get myself a snake. I have more than enough for supplies and the animal itself.
I browsed on morphmarket for what felt like ages....
I had no idea that there were.... so many complicated genetics with ball pythons. I was highly interested, because if you know me, you know I’m interested in genetics and selective breeding.
I found there were THOUSANDS of genetic combinations, each with unique names. It was like alien code. The animals were beautiful but I had no idea what I was really looking at.
One night while going to our local reptile store to get feeder rats, I was looking around at all the glass window babies, as I usually do.
I made my way around the scorpions, tarantulas, cave scorpions, frogs, lizards, the store’s companion burmese python, and my eyes landed on a little... adorable puppy-eyed baby ball python. The signage stated that it was a Puma. Seemed simple enough. Easy name to remember. I looked into the glass at the lil noodle, and talked all baby talk and shit. The sweet little thing came right up to scope at me, then yawned.
I called an employee over and said I’d like to handle this animal right here. The employee obliged and I fell in love. Sexed as male. Easy buy.
I cried on the way home, It was amazing. I have one picture on here of him a few days after I got him. His name is Mallow, and he is bigger now, but still just as sweet.
So yeah. It went from there. Now, including the boa and ball python that are my fiance’s, and Mallow, we have added 3 more to our family. We are done now, as these animals may live a loooooong time. And they require space and attention just like any other pet. They’re not expensive, and they’re low maintenance care is nearly brainless if you set it up right. They’re statistically and actually safer than dogs or cats, and are absolutely therapeutic and entertaining.
This blog will from this day forward be dedicated to snake content, reptile content, and a lot more fun, actually good pictures. I will also share genetic related stuff I find relevant.
Not having a shitty phone camera is pretty great, tbh.
TLDR: No more homestead. Ex is evil (yeah yeah), New place new animal new me. SNAKES! SNAKES!!!! SNAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKEEEEESSSSS!
I know this post is just for me but whatever, if I make myself laugh. Cool. G’night.
