Week 7: Eliel Saarinen and First Christian Church

This week's research is a bit different than usual- I read about the First Christian Church in Columbus, Indiana, built by Eliel Saarinen, and his son, Eero Saarinen. This church is the first of its kind in America, and became a model of church architecture since.

It’s interesting to learn about the church’s history. Apparently, the First Christian Church was the most expensive church of its time, where it costed $15 million in today’s dollars. More surprisingly, the money was raised by local people within the city, where only about 10000 residents lived. The church also takes up an entire city block, accompanied with pools, clock tower and trees. In this, we can see how important this church is to the local people.

The design of the church, as mentioned before, is the pioneer of  contemporary church architecture in America. Instead of using traditional elements of historical churches, Eliel and Eero chose to reinterpret how a church should look like in modern society, where concrete and straight lines replaced buttresses and columns. It still has the religious atmosphere of a church due to the high ceiling, but also has the warmth of being in a friendly place due to the light colors of the wooden interior and natrual lighting.

As a former architectural student, it’s quite refreshing to be looking at architectural design from a designer’s perspective. This building also reminds me of another church I’ve studied during that time, called the Church of the Light, built by a Japanese architect, Tadao Ando.

Compared to the First Christian Church, the Church of the Light goes to the extreme end of Modernism, where every wall is constructed with reinforced concrete. The entire room is much darker, with the entire emphasis of the church being the cross-shaped window behind the chapel, shining light in through a precise axis at the center. 

Comparing the two churches, I think the First Christian Church has more warmth to it, while the Church of the Light is more serious and, dare I say, colder. As a designer, I may not have many opportunities where I can shape the architectrual form of a building, but these two buildings does still give me inspiration on how lighting and materials changes the entire atmosphere of a space.
