It was a tremendous honor...but frankly bewildering. Why would an agency dedicated to intelligence name their headquarters after someone who celebrated his 75th birthday by jumping out of a perfectly good airplane at 12,000 feet?

Former First Lady Barbara Bush, on the Central Intelligence Agency naming their headquarters after former President (and former CIA Director) George H.W. Bush, who made seven parachute jumps after his 75th birthday.

Despite being wheelchair-bound with a form of Parkinson’s disease, President Bush’s final skydiving experience took place on his 90th birthday in 2014 near his family’s vacation home in Kennebunkport, Maine. When Mrs. Bush learned that the landing zone for President Bush’s parachute jump was the grounds of a nearby church, she only half-jokingly said, “Well, if it goes wrong, we’ll just carry him inside and have the funeral.”

The first blow of the friendly rivalry between the Bushes and the Simpsons is usually summarised as Barbara Bush describing The Simpsons as "the dumbest thing I've ever seen", only for an in-character response from Marge to make her back down completely and apologise.

This is loosely correct, but in context it probably says more about Babs's bordering-on-royalty worldview than anything else. The full quote is “It was the dumbest thing I had ever seen...but it’s a family thing, and I guess it’s clean". In 1990, this could only mean the rougher-edged first season of The Simpsons, and the article's very next sentence explains how Mrs. Bush Sr. "hasn’t driven a car in 10 years and concedes she “hasn’t really done housework” or ”even seen a sandwich bag” in almost as long". Small wonder, then, she'd be so baffled by plots like a family's patriarch losing his job and attempting to off himself - after all, shouldn't he simply get a better job, or spend a few weeks recuperating in his Maine beach house?
