Observing peoples reactions to morally gray or black actions committed by different characters is so funny. Throughout all of G. War the character tags were chock-full of people unironically enraged claiming “Bruce isn’t even capable of doing something bad like that.” about an action that is pretty well in line with his character journey thus far, meanwhile there are still new posts that gain traction that open with lines like “I know Jason has committed his fair share of sins/crimes but” like bro when. In 2010?

Also. The whole premise of the b*tfamily™ that you so love is built on the load bearing wall being that they are a crime family. Hell, do people just collectively forget the part where Bruce manufactures and freely uses weapons with his own furry brand logo plastered all over them, causing all sorts of 'explosions and more!' property damage all over the streets of Gotham? Pretty sure that makes him a terrorist but you people don't feel the need to go around reminding fandom of that every five minutes.

Watching Making myself sit through Moffat's Who, trying to give it a decent chance and I can't stand it already. Y'know why?

The stupid fucking love triangle.

Because not only is it just generally annoying as a trope, but it is so poorly written here. It takes over the show in a really obnoxious way and completely flanderizes characters who, in the first episode, were decent people.

Rory is portrayed as a fool for being... concerned that his fiance is cheating on him with the not-actually-imaginary friend she's been obsessed with since childhood, who she ran off with and kissed (A normal thing to be concerned about!!). And just generally, he's portrayed as a bumbling idiot. As the one who just gets confused and makes one-liners about being insecure. And both Amy and the Doctor just brush him off, leave him behind! Mocked by the woman who's supposed to be there for him and abandoned by the Doctor who's meant to keep him safe. He's being reduced to basically just comic relief here, and it sucks.

The Doctor is so.. aloof. More so than 10 and DEFINTELY moreso than 9. He's a silly, childish man who often fails to recognize the emotional consequences of his actions. He has his emotional moments, yes, but a lot of his writing falls victim to what I call "Sherlock Syndrome." When Moffat just writes an aloof super genius and expects the audience to fawn over him because he has good outfits and witty one-liners. Matt Smith is a fantastic actor and he carries a lot of his run, but putting glitter on a turd doesn't stop it being a turd.

Amy is yet another victim of the "every woman falls madly in love with the Doctor" pitfall. Worked with Rose, got old with Martha and after that almost every one-off woman who flirted with him just made me roll my eyes. Her obsession and anger with the Doctor didn't have to be romantic, but Moffat just couldn't resist writing a "strong female protagonist" who's sexy and she knows it, who loves having all the boys fawn over her and flirts without a care in the world. Who's a brash girlboss in charge of her boys, but who also turns into a sobbing damsel in distress at the slightest sign of danger.

All three of these characters are so blatantly characatures of themselves right now that it takes me out of it. They're all just quippy one-liners of their smartness or their brashness or their insecure foolishness. Can these types of people exist in real life? Yeah. But the way they're written about here is just obnoxious. I'm willing to accept that later Moffat seasons might be better than this (at least on the interpersonal conflict side of things), but it's season 1 and he's already dropping the ball so hard.

We could've gotten something truly marvelous, with a PLATONIC conflict based on the Raggedy Man from her childhood finally coming back and offering her freedom from a boring adult life. She's enamored with him, but doesn't entirely trust him because hey, he massively fucked up once already. Maybe Rory is concerned about his place in Amy's life, and Amy tries to be comforting. Maybe she messes up, maybe she says the wrong thing. Maybe she says the wrong thing right before losing Rory to the crack in space and time. But she has to try, because why should I care about a relationship where one person doesn't care about the other's happiness, at least a little? And right now it just feels like she doesn't.

I'm not saying shows shouldn't have interpersonal conflicts and flawed protagonists. They should! But to pull that off well, you have to make us want to see these characters grow. You have to give us a reason to enjoy watching these characters interact, even at their low points. And revisting Moffat's run as an adult, I don't feel enjoyment. I just feel annoyed.

#also all the flashbacks to the cracks in time. like sir we're not stupid #we can remember that thing that happned two episodes ago without visual reminders #also we don't need the doctor and amy to exposition monologue about how scary the crack in time is every damn time they see it #we know that its a crack in space and time and that its scary #also i feel like he overrelies on the Epic Monologue #they can be really impactful and cool #but already they're feeling overused #matt and karen and arthur tried their damn hardest and i don't blame them #but wow moffat just wrote a really tropey muddled season #i see why i remembered rtd's run so much clearer #because there was so much more worth remembering #doctor who #new who #11th doctor #matt smith #amy pond #rory williams

just needed to say but its 100% ok to write characters out-of-character.

if you craft a version of a character that is completely different from the canon character its not necessarily bad writing and that fact alone doesn't make you a bad writer in any capacity.

its ok to use a preexisting character as a starting place to write your own characters even if you're not changing names or changing a lot about them. I've read and adored a bunch of fics where the characters are definitely not like they are in canon and if i saw that version of the character in the show id be so confused. but I'm decidedly not watching the show, im reading your fic and im completely immersed in your version of the character.

using characters as a vessel to make your own story based on your own experiences is not in any way inferior to writing fix-its of canon or adhering exclusively to canon characterizations. not everyone will enjoy it or read it because no tropes or ways of writing will appeal to everyone, but there will always be someone that enjoys your work and appreciates what you do.

writing is fucking difficult no matter which angle you choose to take. and theres no trope or plot or personal experience that you can't write for any character because there are no laws of writing that say you have to stick to your source material.

its still a good idea to tag if you're characters don't adhere to canon characterizations just because like any trope your reader wants to be able to know what they'll be reading beforehand (and it'll help clarify that the mischaracterization is not an accident you forgot to edit but just how you chose to write this character)

basically your writings are still good and valid even if it wouldn't happen in the show. in some cases "they wouldn't do that in the show" is a damn compliment.

#i wrote this with steddie in mind but it applies to most anything methinks #because i canon characterization for steve and fanon don't always line up but that's not a problem #i love that we like exploring different possibilities for his character from what his parents are like to his relationship with the party #and this applies to smut too it doesnt fucking matter how you wanna write it cause we havent seen them have gay sax so its not like we know #and even if we did it doesn't matter! write them however you want dammit #and especially when writing about serious stuff like if you're projecting your experience with eds or chronic pain or abuse or depression #onto a character who doesn't explicitly have that experience #sharing your experience realistically does more good for you and the readers than trying to make the character canon-compliant #and not to say everyone has to like the thongs you write. no writing will make everyone happy. even the most critical acclaimed works dont #make everyone happy (there are people who don't like arcane for crying out loud and thats the most exceptional/adored show I've ever seen) #steddie tumblr #because those are the only fic i read these days #and we have a lot of different popular tropes that aren't canon compliant and i want you guys to know you're epic and cool #fic writing #writing rambles #writing rant #writing positivity #devon thinks sometimes

I got an Olympic runner guy with running blades prosthetics and a Harpy with articulated wings! I found out that they're making minifigs now that includes some wild fantasy elements and disability representation. I really want to find the dog groomer one with the Afghan hound and has a cochlear implant, the dog is cute and since hard-of-hearing runs in my family, that has a bit of a personal sentimental concept there...

Anyway, my Valentine's day was pretty cool. Nothing but good luck, people were very polite and friendly, and absolutely nothing went wrong this year. 🥹

i honest to god put more stock into the relationship between these double-fictional characters than sb & hs themselves sometimes

#the implications man the implications #i read that one comic yes and i think the honest to god nice level the dangeresque two's relationship is built upon is. so fun #i will analyze that in another post. this post is for me to say. i really like it #god what if i wrote a story. see i really like the idea of stories where sb has to confront the beings from his own creations #in a messy & extremely freudian manner #so one where he meets up with the cast of dangeresque would be fun to make. i can imagine it #if cutsey/sultry buttons craig & strong sad's misc brother characters are any indication there is a good deal of actor influence #in the cast's realization as characters. i mean like bubs & the kot & pom pom & the poopsmith play their parts pretty straightforwardly #but let's face it. sb can come up with very nice concepts but he can't do super varied character types. #the rest of the cast are responsible for much of the variety in the actual character trait department. he makes up the drama fine #okay i said i wouldn't do analysis in this post. my point is a fcusa/dangeresque cast meetup would be interesting #because some of them are direct strong bad products & there'd be some people dealing with #yep yeah i figured out that's how sb views me while i was playing that character. or even just yep i'm not like that at all #meanwhile others would be like man it sure is nice how i'm not actually like that but it kind of hurts how sb views me so #and yet others would be like say strong bad since dangeresque & dangeresque too are getting up to some stuff right now #wouldn't it be so cool if we also did something. so that they could see their progentitor-types have also got epic things going on #god ask me about this again at a time not so late at night okay. and also once i've had more time to think about it
