i said i wanted to try my hand at translating some stuff so i was like yeah screw it im gonna find something with robo-ky in it and see what i get!!
tfw this joke stopped working after x plus when they changed robo-kys palette to that green/gray plating instead of flesh colored lmaooo
translation notes under the cut:
my knowledge of japanese is extremely minimal (i keep telling myself im gonna go back to studying it but im lazy) and i still rely on a translator, but i can read hiragana and katakana with ease (and thank god for furigana bc i cant read kanji lmao) and i can understand small words and phrases. hopefully this translation is faithful enough!
i revised the comic title to a western localized robo-ky pun, as the original title also contained a pun in japanese that didnt quite translate well into english. the original comic title was "れボカイ" which was a pun on a word meaning "self-recognition" which, in the context of the comic, was a joke about how characters cant seem to distinguish robo-ky from regular ky.
the original comic can be seen here

Sorry this came so late- but Merry Christmas @part-time-pixie !! I was your secret Santa for the @mlsecretsanta 2023 event! This piece went through a lot of complications because I was so unsure about a lot of things! Let me run down the process!
I knew it had to be your AU since that’s a lot more personal and I myself am a big fan of personalized stuff! So I actually never knew anything about Winx before this so I researched- about 6 episodes for context of the fairy and specialist relations- so that’s one reason why the startup was slow but then!! I needed to figure out a setting- originally I was going with Magix City- but the color palette was more green and I wanted a more warm palette- but for the life of me I couldn’t find a place that screamed romance- eventually I gave in and just looked up “date in Winx” or something like that- and boom!! This place showed up- so heavy inspiration of the setting from this screen shot (lots of details were forgotten waaah-)
Tumblr media
And then it was little things- from my research I realized they only transformed when battling so I needed a casual outfit (note for some reason I forgot to apply this logic to Luka’s fit I’m sorry 😭) for Adrien that wasn’t his powered up form for a casual setting- I ended up just asking- and I hope that didn’t clue you in but nonetheless I hope it was still somewhat a surprise! I’m so glad I did though because at that point I could finally finish the sketch- which was around the end of December so I was stuck on that for a while 😭
I finished the line art and coloring in a rush and man you can tell ;v; I went through a lot in coloring stage- I tried finishing this piece during a family outing and my markers (about 80+) fell out of their holders and went everywhere- also learned coloring over my white pen did not in fact keep it solid and the white began to get washed away from the marker on top, revealing the line art I messed up on beneath- one of the things that made me glad I was late is when you made this piece and I realized his gem clasp was teal- I was gonna make it yellow since that was the last red fountain specialist color not used and I assumed he’d just take it lmao! Though in short I went through all the stages of grief when doing the coloring ;v;
All to say though I hope despite all the flaws you still like it! I was really happy with this around the line art stage and even now- I’m just harsh on my own work but this is actually the biggest piece in my art book (I’ve been working on this book since Summer 2022!) so I suppose that is to say I’m glad I was able to try something new with this one!
(Also small note but I realized the quality turned out really fuzzy on here- if you want @part-time-pixie I can send a zip file to you in dms?)

(part 1 of part 2!!)
for shits n giggles, i tried my hand at redesigning dr stone characters (read: three)
i have too many emotions when it comes to this show's character design lmao. a vicious hate-love of the century
a couple of my process notes if anyone's interested: (vague spoilers up to season 3 of the anime)
there's a criminal lack of skin tones that i immediately wanted to take advantage of; and before Certain People start saying race-swapping; none is happening here, it's all just taking account of tanning and sunburns. sunscreen is a thing of the past here and a lot of time is spent outdoors in order to gather food
dramatic shifts in skin tones from what's given at birth happen pretty frequently in real life even with A/C and sunscreen; a huge missed opportunity to play with this in the color department methinks, but here we are (don't even get me started on the massive range of skin tones in east asian genetics alone)
so i played around a bit with contrast, nothing outlandish aside from giving Kohaku noticeable sunburns and freckles from (1) having caucasian blood in her to begin with and (2) not having access to any of the skin products our moderners would have
that being said, realism in the clothing color department was just about entirely thrown out the window. the blue dyes we know about are nowhere (naturally) near Japan, and here Ishigami village is in canon with deep navy on every villager; Inagaki and Boichi decided realism specifically here wasn't as important as color symbolism (which i personally think was a good creative decision), so cut me some slack-
so for colors it was just my personal taste on streamlining the palettes-
Gen in particular i thought would benefit from exposed shoulders without taking away how he needs bigger sleeves to hide shit up there. a lot of the guys have plain shirts and sleeves or just go shirtless entirely and i felt like it'd be fun to have him wear something in between to really push the magician/entertainer vibe
hairstyles were changed mostly to be easier to draw and to make their silhouettes just a bit easier to distinguish from each other. (hair colors were untouched except for Kohaku, purely because i have a personal preference for the more natural blonde color than any actual design significance lmao)
partial exception for Kohaku, cuz it annoyed me that the other characters say she has super thick, unruly hair...but then her hair is drawn no differently from everyone else's 💀
didn't wanna play into the stereotype of naturally curly hair being seen as something to be fixed (especially within the context of a makeover-), so i tried to imply chronically unbrushed hairdsjfsdf
can you tell from how many bullets are here about Kohaku how i feel about her design? last thing: body types.
Gen is supposed to be significantly tall, Kohaku is one of the strongest characters while being one of the shortest; it is very hard to tell that from their designs alone. it's mostly just the limitations of Boichi's art style,,,proportions that's i'm aware is nitpicky, but i wanted to show it here anyway 💀💀💀
smth smth disclaimer about subjectivitydsfsdfsd-
Tumblr media
uhhhh, congrats for reading all that, have some silhouettes!

You like these questions? I have more!!!
Is Redstone closer in nature to a base or an acid? Does it have corrosive properties if left unchecked and unregulated?
Does Redstone have a catalyst and if so what happens?
Can Redstone be used as seasoning? Is there a hybrid you would attribute a strong enough palette to safely consume it?
What is the general consensus on whether Redstone is dangerous? Are there people who believe that it should not be used?
How does Redstone react with Skulk? Additionally, how does it react with mobs spawning from the Deep Dark such as Wardens?
Would Redstone ever be considered a fashion statement, and if so, as what kind of clothing piece? Could you, if you made it thick enough, potentially knit with Redstone?
Can Redstone be used as a spell component for witches and evokers?
Is Redstone a unlimited resource, and if it isn't, what are the precautions on how much you can use?
Will Redstone alter properties of inherently magical things, like end crystals or totems of undying?
I have so many nessecary and unessecary questions
oh nice questions! (just for the sake of efficiency i'm gna put asterisks by any questions i had answers for already, everything else you can assume i'm making up on the spot lmao)
*Is Redstone closer in nature to a base or an acid?
neither! it's more like a scab :)
*Does Redstone have a catalyst and if so what happens?
no it does not, at least by my understanding of what a catalyst is in this context
Does it have corrosive properties?
hmm i'm gonna go with no
*Can Redstone be used as seasoning? Is there a hybrid you would attribute a strong enough palette to safely consume it?
can? yes. should? no. safely? well, tango's still alive, so...
*What is the general consensus on whether Redstone is dangerous?
the general consensus is that yes, it is dangerous, though the extent of the danger is unknown. safety measures are taken out of an abundance of caution
Are there people who believe that it should not be used?
probably. none of the hermits, obviously, but it would be very easy to disapprove of from a number of angles. at least a few people being Anti Redstone seems pretty much inevitable
*How does Redstone react with Skulk?
...see me after class
Would Redstone ever be considered a fashion statement, and if so, as what kind of clothing piece?
not clothing but i bet there's some level of prestige associated with the color of redstoners' eyes. whether they're considered good or bad would be pretty context-dependent though
Could you, if you made it thick enough, potentially knit with Redstone?
no, but you could probably dye clothes with it
Can Redstone be used as a spell component for witches and evokers?
i don't think evokers have much use for it, and i don't think witches use extended potions (could be wrong there, but also i don't consider the witches to be canon to the game lore)
*Is Redstone a unlimited resource, and if it isn't, what are the precautions on how much you can use?
the stone itself exists in unknown but presumably finite quantities, the signal it emits is infinite
Will Redstone alter properties of inherently magical things, like end crystals or totems of undying?
i don't think so? it does extend the duration of potion effects, though

tonal whiplash—a scene out of context.
Tumblr media
Trying to draw 616 Scarlet Spider Kaine is so hard for me 😂 I think my problem was the cheekbones, which I tried to fix, so I think he turned out alright here. I'm just so used to drawing him smashed up. Obviously. Also. It's really hard to draw windowverse Kaine's nose in profile. I need to find some reference photos or something.
Tumblr media
It's smeared off to the side lol (different WIP/sketch, making a scar reference lol—it actually came in handy for this pic a little bit)
Anyway, here are the lines without any colors—
Tumblr media
beef
I did not necessarily originally intend to blanket everything in solid black, so there are lines that aren't visible lmao — but in the dream sequence thing this is part of there is a lot of pure darkness and voids of negative space so i was like, you know, i should probably invoke that here. I GUESS I could have colored 616 Kaine's pants dark gray or something but I decided to leave it all invisible so I could keep the palette simple and focus more on the... copious quantities of blood lol
tfw your hair is just soaked with blood. I was just about to say "in the nature of dreams, this isn't realistic, and his hair isn't actually soaked in blood irl" but then I thought about it for a sec and... no, it definitely is soaked all the way up to the back of his head because of the fact that he ends up lying in a pool of his own blood for like... at least fifteen minutes. if not longer. maybe thirty minutes?
it gets chopped to chin-length after this (when he gets ✨hospitalized✨ because he's ✨dying✨) on account of the blood being a radioactive biohazard and also a hazard in general (tripping hazard, tangling hazard, etc.)—the buzzcut in some other sketches I've posted is not until a week or two later and is something he does because of some complex emotions.
they go to a renfair like three weeks after this 😂
Anywho~
he is m— he is my poor little meow meow,,,

Man, I watched modern One Piece with my bf
I watched it up to the end of the Alabasta arc back in, like, 2006 and the difference is staggering
Like, I won't even harp on the fights taking too long or the amount of recaps and reused footage. It's egregious, but that's shonen for you, I guess.
The fights are shit. None of the enemies have interesting abilities, everything devolves into beam spams, even for fucking ZORRO, who uses swords, but his big fight of the last arc is still somehow a beam spam. And the animation is either stiff, because they're saving up for big sakuga moments... Or big sakuga moments that are so chaotic and over-animated you can barely tell what the fuck is going on.
A lot of the time I couldn't gauge the stakes at all. Sanji VS Queen comes to mind, as it felt like the fucking dinosaur should've been defeated for at least six times before he actually went down.
Oda's quirk of drawing some characters really big for no good reason always looked cute from a distance but in the actual fights it just looks goofy compared to normal-size protags.
Was excited to see Brook and Franky, who weren't even introduced when I stopped watching and they did fuck all.
Chopper and Usopp felt like they were doing fuck all too.
Gear 5 is a mess. I get that they're trying to evoke the feeling of rubberhose cartoons / Looney Tunes shenanigans, but they're also trying to marry it with outrageous sakuga and it just ends up looking like animation vomit. The boring fight location and the very dull color palette aren't helping to distinguish WTF is going on on the screen either. And Luffy somehow acheiving it right after seemingly dying because he's a special chosen one boy with a very special fruit is just... So boring.
I understand that I started watching in the middle of an arc and I'm missing context, but it felt like most of the fights laked any personal emotional stakes too.
I compare it to the fight against Crocodile and his goons and not only was everyone involved, everyone had to think and improvise how to counter their enemies' abilities (except Zorro, lmao), the animation was a lot easier to read even if it was cheaper and everything just kind of felt more grounded and understandable. We knew our team's limitations and understood the powers of our enemies.
That said, I did like some of the fights in the new ark:
Sanji VS Queen at least had some emotional beats for Sanji, even if they spent way too long on them. Should've left the angst for after the fight.
Killer VS Straw Doll guy was a genuinely cool fight with a creative power set and solution. I didn't even know who those jobbers are, but they clearly had history and emotional stakes, I cared about what was going on. Best fight of the whole arc.
Trafalgar and Kid VS Big Momma was kinda cool. Interesting powers, the two had to learn how to fight together, shit was happening. Momma as a big stationary target was kind of meh, tho. Like, she was a glorified turret.
Overall, I was expecting more out of the modern One Piece. I adore the early arks and was planning to catch up, but now I'm unsure.

@pax-thuban left these tags on a post:
#well. first of all. this is so. bittersweet #like screaming and crying and throwing up on the floor etc #second of all. maybe i'm looking too much into this but. #it's interesting to see that there's blood splatters on tenzo's face /and/ his mask #if i recall correctly. the mask covers his happuri as well #the implication that tenzo lost his mask during battle. put it back on presumably /still/ in battle. continued killing #idk. just hurts #like something something anbu work forces him to feel more comfortable wearing a mask and conforming to a nameless org and set of ideals#and forgoing individuality #or like. something something maybe he feels worse that his face got 'stained' because it's basically a reminder that 'cat' and 'tenzo' #are one and the same and not two distinct entities no matter how much he wants to separate his identity and his anbu lifestyle #and the fact that the happuri is blank and doesn't have a konoha leaf on it.... he doesn't feel connected to the community even as he kills #for it... #i feel like it's kind of obvious that it's significant that the comic shows tenzo taking off his mask as he shows his weariness/depression #regarding anbu work and then how he thinks about kakashi as a jonin sensei. like representing himself as tenzo the individual rather than#'cat' a faceless tool of konoha in the shadows #i also feel like it's kind of noteworthy that the perspective(? is that what it's called for images?) zooms in on tenzo's face #first panel is mostly black and tenzo's body is off-center(?). like his face is centered but his body's not. and that leaves more room for #the black background. but the second panel fills it up with the kakashi thought bubble and tenzo's body comes into the center to fill up #the bottom half. and then the third panel makes tenzo himself fill up more space. there's less 'darkness' now #not sure how to say it other than. his sole saving grace in anbu at the moment is preserving his self and bond with kakashi ig #i also like how the black background isn't pure black. there's a tinge of red(? idk it could also be orange? but i'm taking it as red) #like one hand. maybe a reference to the whole blood thing. a reflection of how he feels surrounded by that reminder of murder instead #of just it being select patches on his skin #on the other hand (and this might be looking too deep 😔) maybe how allusion to the sharingan. how even though he left root #anbu still feels very similar to it that he feels reminded of how he was watched by danzo? #sorry for rambling. i am in an analysing mood today #but i'm also not that great at analysing visual art lmao
nooo no sorries! this is really useful and EXTREMELY flattering to receive such detailed thoughts, i feel like im back in a School Crit Circle or something, which is really fun and helpful. Critique like this rlly helps me understand what people are bringing to my art when I make it and how it's getting interpreted, which as somebody who wants to tell understandable stories via images, is useful to me beyond what words can describe!
like—there's no "right" or "wrong" when it comes to interpreting art, there is my intention, but my intention isn't necessarily what comes out (like how kishimoto somehow accidentally wrote two teenagers who he meant for us to perceive as straight, in the pains and throes of love for each other. like he wrote that, whether or not he intended to. i dont even actually ship s/n bc it doesn't have The One Ingredient for me, but its...also something thats hard to ignore about the text)
and similarly, since theres no way to objectively read a text, when you read it you're putting it in your own context, finishing the painting yourself with whatever colors you've got in your palette to use
that said! I can answer for my intentions in some of these
The blood and the mask: Practically, you're 100% right! Mask needs to be off to get at the happuri. That he's got blood on both his mask, and his happuri, means that at some point in the battle, he lost his mask and then put it on. In terms of art, I did this because the juxaposition contrast between the blood and the small amount of joy he's taking in thinking about a scarecrow, felt really important, and I didn't want to lose that with the removal of the mask. I also put the blood splatter in the same place, coming in from Tenzō's left, and splattering upward across his forehead area. Practically, this would mean that he was in the same position by a spatter of blood twice, but symbolically this implies that he is or feels like the same with or without the mask—like u talk about them being the same entity. I didn't really do that intentionally though—like I didn't think about it. I just kinda was like "yea that feels right. anyway moving on."
No leaf on the happuri: I AGREE WITH YOU ABT THE SYMBOLISM...he doesnt feel connected to konoha in a Real way until he's co-captaining, I think. He needs to be allowed to LIVE in Konoha to be a part of it... That said, if I'm not drawing Captain Yamato Post-Sunlight-Exposure I straight up forget that he had the leaf at all–I know it's supposed to be a Danzō thing, but I keep thinking it's an anbu thing. Honestly, since I agree with the symbolism, whether or not I forget or make an intentional choice not to depict it really doesn't matter I suppose
The Zoom In: Kind of the same as the last! i felt in my heart that we had to zoom in...I didn't think about it in terms of ''lessening darkness'' although now that I've read you write that I like THAT reading much more—esp since so much of yamato's themes in canon seem to be about sunlight and darkness...there's an interesting reading of darkness lessening (because he takes up more space) without light gaining any footing (he's still, as always, situated in the dark) about like, the little things that one can do to manage their depression or a dark situation, even when they still aren't able to be fully FREE of it quite yet (if ever). I think, when I was thinking abt it, I was thinking about making Tenzō seem very small and alone in the first panel, and then even after thinking about Kakashi, he's not quite so small in the panel, even though he still remains alone. This being said, the darkness reading is much stronger than the loneliness reading, even though they go hand in hand, I much prefer your interpretation.
the red in the black: This is interesting!!!! I like your interpretations a lot...in terms of materials this is only black india ink, so there's no red actually in it, but in the photo I can see what you mean—the ink I'm using is shiny because the "matte" ink is twice the price of it and I'm a cheapskate, and it inevitably creates shines of color when scanned or photographed. Obviously though, the lack of intention or the material contrast doesn't mean you're wrong—I saw the colorful patches in the image and decided it was fine enough to post anyway, they're a piece of the art as it exists digitally! Open for critique and interpretation. I like the idea that the darkness is connected to the blood very much especially, because it is for Tenzō, isn't it?
anyway, ty v much for your analysis, i was incredibly flattered to receive it, and i think you're actually super good at it, in my opinion!
#yamswers#pax-thuban#my jutsu#plz dont take offense to me explaining critique in basic terms ahghdhghds i do it mostly bc i know theres people who follow me who#will be less familiar with what critique is...and tumblr is often a less than ideal teacher for the art of art critique#I think the best thing one can do when critiquing art is to actually engage as much as they can with what they see in front of them#the ''how does this make Me feel'' part of it i think is EXTREMELY helpful—but mostly as a jumping off point#you want to use that feeling like a scent hound i think...it can lead u to the area you need to look at and it can follow the scent so well#but the feeling itself isnt going to be able to explain why you feel that way or what about the art is working or isnt working—#—which is the point of Critique#and you are extremely good at looking at specific factors in the art and both elaborating on the feeling its giving you and why#i've definitely given people critiques where I get stuck with the dog—only saying how I'm feeling but nothing more substantial#''i smell something in this area. not sure what. definitely here tho''#ive also given crit where i just do not engage at all with the feelings and crit solely on analysis—which is good for like anatomy help#but limited in terms of an overall piece#ive definitely gotten feedback on my art which is 100% wholly based on the viewers own personal history + doesnt rlly engage with the#meaning or practical elements of the art in front of them#and in that case its just kind of ''okay! cool! im flattered that you have such a strong + personal connection to this piece!''#but in terms of crit i can't do much with that bc their crit was so personal to them—not less valid + not less important...but also#not something meant for me at all#like um. um. um. the song Man on the Moon by REM is really important to me...but not for anything in the song itself. just where i heard it#and who i heard it with. it doesnt make my connection to the song less meaningful...but its not something that would b useful 2 the band#SDGJDSHGKDSJGH SORRY NOW *I'M* RAMBLING#it was just exciting to see such a thorough critique. it reminded of college back when id get to pin my art to the wall and get absolutely#blasted to smithereens by my teachers and classmates. VERY fun. i miss that energy#i wholly recommend it to anyone who would be okay getting told their art came out wrong (bc it sometimes will)#idk. anyway this is an art blog but more than that its a blog about art#so its fun to talk about the mechanics and decision making sometimes

4, 6, 7, and lastly 9 on whatever character comes to mind when you read the question!
[questions here]
4. which oc can cook? what’s their favorite thing to cook?
First two people that came to mind were Zane and Roman. Zane will cook almost anything and loves making new things. but especially likes making cheesy dishes. He's got a pretty good homestyle mac and cheese recipe. Roman likes baking more than cooking.
6. which oc prefers to dip someone? to be dipped?
I've heard and used 'dip' in so many contexts it took me a second to realize this was probably about dancing. 😂 mainly cause the #5 question is about slow dances. Uhm, well. Roman had classical dance lessons as a kid, and so did Abe (because Elaine wasn't about to let her kids embarass her if the need arose. which means that Nathan and Lucy also have. Lucy would rather not relive those memories, and Nathan would kill most people on site for even requesting a dance though.)
Abe would probably take the lead position when dancing, just because that's what he was taught and knows best. Roman on the other hand would be dependent on his dance partner is.
Pia would absolutely love dancing with someone and having them twirl and getting a proper dance kiss though. she's a fan of classical romantic stuff like that. (hi hope you wanted a novel about dance styles lmao)
7. which oc has the most cohesive color pallet? the craziest color pallet?
Pia, Abe and Roman were all taught to dress well as children, so that follows. Pia is probably the best at it though.
Pelle's color palette is all over the place (but still not bad, he just likes ALL the things)
9. what is one universe/story an oc would fit in to besides the one they live in?*
hahahahah oh boy. 😂 you may be asking the wrong person I actively just think of fun random AUs whenever. uhm. lets see. Absolutely have thought about a vampire AU with Abe and Roman. As well as a mob AU for Roman as well. may or may not have thought of a villain mode/serial killer/horror au with Nathan as well. 💀 uhm... and in lieu of it being May for the last full month lmao, I feel like Pelle would be really fun in a mermaid AU? idk why. just do.

how has deja evolved over the years? i swear she gets redesigned like every few months /pos lol
LMAOOO ud be right cause shes changed stories each year (im painfully indecisive), this year is the only story ive genuinely been interested in exploring since i finally landed on a genre i think would fit her best? and i consider her redesigns to be a sort of progression into how ive grown as a writer and maybe as a person since shes been with me for so long lmao
Tumblr media
ill place this under read more cause ill go into condensed detail about her evolution for her characterization, her design, and a small timeline for her story contexts but tl;dr shes grown so much and has gotten way more complex. i love her so much
2017-early 2018: she actually started out as a sona concept! design wise, nothing really special tbh, i was throwing stuff i really liked. for 2017, she was just a throwaway concept, but i was rapidly improving towards the end of that year...
mid-2018: ... that i ended up reusing her concept as a character concept, and during that year, i made an au with a friend that spiraled into something that lasted about the next 2 years, that then included her as one of the main characters LMAO. i wanted to draw crazy hair and also a cute mask, so i did. i ended up making it so that the masks were to both hide her identity (shes a fugitive in the au) and to be some sort of metaphor. her personality was very outwardly sweet, but she could also kill you so it best to not get on her bad side, but she was also in a constant learned helplessnes. big deja year
2019: design wise, i removed the mask, made her fatter (despite me not knowing how to draw fat people yet), and made her sorta baby-faced, since her character is a lot more childish during this bit? story wise, her story was included in an anthology about different kinds of love in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world. during this time, i was going through a Lot mentally, and it sorta marked the beginning of a really horrible period in my life thats still kind of ongoing, so i used her story in a more experimental sense so i can figure out different workarounds in an escapist way? this is also when i started pairing her with her now-partner-in-stories, lualhati, and from this point, lulu and deja are inseparable
2020: for this year, i was sorta putting her story off? i was really struggling to figure out what to do with it other than the deja/lulu love story, but at the same time, that marked me going through a journey of adding fat people to my work. dejas always been small fat, but her body hasnt actually been drawn well enough. we all start from somewhere though. she was a lot more calm in this version, and is sort of a leader figure for a village in a fantasy world. but i wasnt really feeling it.........
2021: last year was when i really started digging deep into what i wanted to do. i wanted weird gay trans cathartic art. so dejas story was that. still wasnt really feeling it, but u can tell i was really experimenting trying to land on something i was passionate about. while i did like her design since its a turning point in my art, and its visually loud (the color palette, holy shit), IT WAS SO HARD TO DRAW? i understand that 2021 me was really going at it with very loud and distinct designs, but the reason why i didnt even draw her for months after was because she was so fucking hard to draw. and i didnt put enough effort to portraying her fatness (which will soon become a very important aspect of her character). but were about to pull a gamer move
2022: up until now, since 2018-2019, i wasnt really satisfied with her story. it didnt really fit what i wanted, bc i was mostly concerned with how other people would react if i talked about them, especially since deja/lulu have always been very personal to me. but i had a vision. where deja and lulu are in a revenge drama thriller in a city in the middle of nowhere. and i havent stopped thinking about it day and night ever fucking since. i brought back a lot of elements from past designs (mostly cause i thought theyd look great, i was right), and im finally getting to a point where im figuring out how i draw fat people. now, dejas characterization came really easy to me (hypervigilent, short-tempered, mysterious, a second away from realizing shes trans). her story explores themes surrounding violence, secrets, and suffocating marriages, and while its a far heavier story than the past ones, its the first time ive been genuinely excited to see how its grown. i could ramble about this all day lol
deja is a growing character and she keeps getting better and better every time im exploring her, and she genuinely means the world to me. thank u for reading this if u have decided to read this

I found this one from my folders, and I'd completely forgotten I'd made it lol. It was weird since the proportions/lineart work felt like something I would've done recently, but this was originally created in 2019???
I decided I wanted to redo the colors, because the OG piece looks a bit bland for my eyes now.
(small context; this was apparently for my fic Reanimate, Dabi's drunk lol)
OG version here

"Fall" color palate with Kurogiri?
Tumblr media
Kurogiri's head is difficult to draw, but it came out okay. This palette is surprisingly fun, I should use it more often!

@macckenchiz, here’s the second one done!
Since I have actually drawn him with this hairstyle (and that is still probs my most reblogged/liked art piece I’ve made for some reason) I used that to pick out the palette this time around.

After reblogging some of the old merman stuff, I decided I wanted to redraw this one. The new version ended up greener, despite me picking the colors from the OG picture lmao.
....I didn’t realize just how old that original was, pretty much three years?? (I made it in May 2019 so it’s pretty spot-on three years ago)

My #1 post of 2022
Tumblr media
Another good All Might roasting moment that never made it to the fic. Also Toshinori is not panicking about Hisashi being serious about killing him, but the fact he knows he’s going to be made fun of somewhat.
Texts in case you can’t read them below:
bubble 1: In pain from a previous villain fight
Toshinori: ugghh it hurtsss. Kill me please
Hisashi: ...Give me a moment.
bubble 2. Realizes what he said & who he’s talking to
bubble 3. Former AFO
Phone:  Hisashi: Toshinori is asking me to kill him again Inko: Hisashi no.
Hisashi: Wife said no.
Toshinori: ...So now she’s joining in on this, huh?

Do you have any of 🌑 across WIPs?
Do I EVER, I say, immediately unable to think of anything 🤡
Lemme break it down one by one; keep in mind most of these are language based as I adapt the flavor of my prose and language for each story.
🧵THE GREAT GLAVENISEAN THEATER 🎭: language pays heavy attention to clothing, sewing, textiles, and material design due to Morgan’s 1st person pov and role as a seamster. There is a motif of repetition itself, altered with increasing obviousness as the story progresses, and the time loop restarts over and over again. This includes repetitive language, and certain details changing each time— the color of stage curtains, the name of a violinist, etc.
🍃 IN THE DEEP OF THE TREES 🌿: nature-heavy imagery, metaphors, and symbolism, specifically on trees and their relationships to the characters (Sabine tied to the roots, Titus to the ascension toward the canopy). Additionally, attention paid upon the deep itself, and the context around it (which will be more helpful once I do a wip intro post —planned for this month!— and actually explain what the deep is lmao
💛 BLOODLINES 🧡: the Gelkins and skin-changers have distinctive aesthetics and color palettes, as well as associated animals.
Gelkins particularly have a monopoly on ivory, cream, and white, as their blood is milky white; other colors are silver, pearl, grey, and spring-toned pastels (sky blue, primrose, pink, yellow, green). They also have associated imagery with wings, birds, and nature based names.
Skin-changers have a focus on gold, amber, and ochre, due to their golden-brown blood; other colors include brown, black, and rich, jewel tones (purple, red, sapphire, emerald, saffron). Their associated animals are generally predators, with a particular emphasis on big cats and snakes.

Art trademark? Very cool expressions--they are so alive! Also your use of color, although I can't quite put my finger on what it is that makes it stand out. I think it has something to do with the luminosity, saturation and stuff that is common across the palette. They're rich colors, and bright, but not glaring. I lack the vocabulary to properly describe it, but I like it very much. Also the painterly quality. It's something about the brushes and the lineart that is a drawing but screams paint to me. Almost like it had texture, which I enjoy very much
Ooo! Thank u, I actually really enjoy drawing expressions and it’s always been fun! I often put art ideas into little chibi sketches just for the fun effect(I should really use words instead tho bc when I get to them I have zero context of what I was doing lmao). I’m also really glad about the colours bc I mostly go by what feels right there and hope for the best x)
And I do often use imitation paintbrushes, especially for the backgrounds. My lineart, however, is all over the place as I flip between technical pen, pencil, and Oberon brushes with no regard for consistency. Partly because I go with whatever feels best and partly because I am blind as a bat and can’t tell what I’m drawing with until it’s too late to backpedal XD
Fun Fact: I once completed an entire HB-4B pencil designated piece with HB pencil alone because I uhhh didn’t look at the pencil I was using. In an advanced art class project. It still worked somehow. I need new glasses so bad

I can now say I've finished Hazbin Hotel (granted I did like 10 hours ago then went to bed but STILL) so I'm gonna talk about it. I'll split this post into parts based on specific subjects I want to talk about to make it easier. Spoilers for Hazbin Hotel if you haven't seen it obviously.
Concept
I really love the concept of Hazbin Hotel, as well as how that concept is explored throughout the show. For additional context I'm ex-Mormon, so I grew up religious. Episode 6 hit me HARD in the religious trauma. Religious trauma will be another section, because I have a LOT of thoughts on it (especially on episode 6 and You Didn't Know). Anyway, the concept of Hazbin Hotel is something I really like, and it's something that I appreciate.
Character Designs
The character designs in Hazbin Hotel are so much fun tbh. It seems that 3 things affect the appearance of demons once they've died:
What they looked like in life
What they did in life
How they died
For example, Angel and his entire family's appearances are based on spiders because they operated a crime web. Alastor's appearance is based on a deer because of how he died. It's a detail I really really like, but then again I'm also someone who appreciates subtle animal traits in character designs (and Alastor's deer traits are absolutely subtle in his regular form). Also Husk expresses himself with his wings and it makes me want to design a character with wings lmao
Soundtrack
The soundtrack is great. Might have to rank the songs at some point idk. One of the things I love is the different music styles throughout the soundtrack. Loser, Baby feels like classic Broadway, You Didn't Know has rock elements, Out For Love has elements of Latin music, it's just a mix of different genres and I love it. Also I love that Hell's Greatest Dad is just Lucifer fighting with Alastor.
Art
I've always loved Vivziepop's art style. Hazbin Hotel is no different. Very fun and dynamic art style, and incredibly fun to see animated. The color palettes are also really nice; the character color palettes specifically are incredibly consistent across Hell and Heaven (lots of red, pink, and black for the demons, and lots of gold, white, and blue for the angels). I also really like that aside from post-ascension Sir Pentious none of the angels have animal motifs in their designs.
Characters
The character writing doesn't feel inconsistent. It's fun to watch the characters interact. Valentino is absolutely and utterly hateable. Alastor is incredibly fun to watch. I love the choice to give Husk a deep voice because the contrast with the little cat noises he sometimes makes is wonderful (especially his purring which is apparently completely involuntary, which is adorable). Husk's dyamic with Angel is also really nice and I love them.
Religious Deconstruction
Alright so as I said, I'm ex-Mormon (this section is long because of it lol). One of the reasons I love Hazbin Hotel as much as I do is because it deconstructs the hypocrisy I, and many other ex-Christians, talk about. So much of the heaven vs hell stuff I was taught is full of hypocrisy and lacks nuance. This is fully deconstructed in Welcome to Heaven, where Sera says that even she doesn't know what qualifies a soul for heaven (personally, I wouldn't be surprised if there are tons of souls in Hell that qualify but Adam and Lute are/were actively working to keep Hell overpopulated). As Emily and Charlie say during You Didn't Know, "If Hell is forever, then Heaven must be a lie" and if there's no redemption after death, even if you've ended up in Hell for mistakes (as is usually the case from what we see in the show; the only exception I can think of really is Alastor), what's the point?
Like, let's look at some of the sinners that end up at Hazbin Hotel.
Angel Dust was born into a crime family; I wouldn't be surprised if he was threatened into staying, especially because the rest of his family is also mostly in Hell with him, although it is also possible that he stayed by choice. Either way, he was born into that lifestyle, which is entirely out of his control. Did him being born into a mafia doom his soul to Hell? Did his choices effect it? Did his addiction send him to Hell, which is what's largely implied by Adam and Lute? What damned him? I doubt anyone in Heaven or Hell even knows, considering Sera doesn't know what qualifies a soul for Heaven.
Husk grew up in Vegas, specifically in a casino. This alone tells me it's not impossible his gambling addiction developed in life, not after he died. We don't know much about Husk so it'll be interesting to learn more about him, but from what we do know, and given Adam and Lute imply Angel's damnation to Hell was caused by addiction, I wouldn't be surprised if Husk's gambling addiction is what damned him.
Alastor was a serial killer and radio host in New Orleans in life, which is definitely what got him in Hell. The thing that makes Alastor's situation different from Angel or Husk is Angel and Husk seem to have been victims of circumstance; Alastor, unless I'm missing something, was a serial killer to be a serial killer, and fully embraces his status as a demon (whereas Angel and Husk are more or less like "Guess this is where I'm at now").
Sir Pentious ascended to Heaven after sacrificing himself for the friends he'd made at the hotel. He was apparently a Victorian era inventor and villain during life, which is likely what landed him in Hell. The fact that he was an active villain in life but was able to be redeemed is notable, and implies to me that anyone could be redeemed if they wanted to be. I think the difference between Sir Pentious vs Angel Dust and Husk is Angel Dust and Husk aren't in possession of their souls, which likely complicates ascension.
The rules feel incredibly arbitrary, and that's also the vibe I got when I was religious. If lust is a sin, what happens to people who have medical conditions that cause hypersexuality? What happens to people who make mistakes that are "damning" by Christian standards? Everything is so arbitrary. Bringing back the lyrics of You Didn't Know, this describes my experience with Mormonism flawlessly:
If Hell is forever, then Heaven must be a lie If angels can do whatever and remain in the sky The rules are shades of gray when you don't do as you say When you make the wretched suffer just to kill them again
I also want to point out that the sinner demon that Vaggie corners and then lets go in the flashback to the last Extermination she participated in during Welcome to Heaven is a fucking child. Children who die can go to Hell as sinner demons, and the Exorcists will kill them during Exterminations. Some might say "oh, that's in bad taste!" But I actually think it's a good example of further religious deconstruction. As a kid I was taught that if I did anything wrong, I would end up experiencing eternal damnation. Because of how Heaven is in Hazbin Hotel, I'm not at all surprised that some of the sinner demons are children. It also further shows how fucking corrupt Heaven is. Also, on the topic of Heaven's corruption, to everyone like "how the fuck are Adam and Lute still in Heaven???" it's more than likely to show the extent of corruption in Heaven.
(I do want to clarify that I don't think religion, including most denominations of Christianity, is inherently bad. However I do have religious trauma from my time in the Mormon church, and seeing a show deconstruct and criticize the worst parts of Christianity is incredibly comforting.)

I’ve always enjoyed seeing your art. You have an eye for backgrounds and color palettes. Presuming you are frustrated by what you feel are stagnating technical skills, I’ll say that that feeling of frustration doesn’t go away and pops up often. I’ve found taken breaks (months long even) when I’m mad and tired works, as well as trying something new or even going back to something basic that I know I can do well.
I realise your post might just be a vent but however you feel about it, I enjoy seeing what art you’ve made and the sort of optimism and reflection you’ve shown through it.
I mean a lot of my frustration comes from like I’ve been doing art for years, I’ve got AP and semi professional portfolios under my belt and before I dropped out of my previous uni I was minoring in studio art it’s just that
1. unless it’s in the context of a life drawing class i feel like i just suck at people. not even in terms of anatomy (tho there’s that sometimes) but wrt coloring shading etc
2. i somehow struggle with the mechanics of digital art. I use csp now but I learned how to use photoshop (and the rest of the adobe suite) in a graphic design context. not that you can’t translate that to art, but it’s mostly not gonna be 1:1 lmao
part of me wants to focus on like. just doing lineart and maybe black and white shading but the thing is that like. colors are kinda my Thing they’re one thing I’ve always felt confident about whether in digital or traditional art and my hands are too shaky for me to have good stand alone line art most of the time lol
it’s partly a continuation vent from this post bc it’s the most recent source of my frustration but yeah
