Sometimes, bad men make great Kings. This particular Duke is absolutely a yandere, but he's also after the throne. He's also one of the few obsessive male characters I can actually imagine in power. He knows how to plan ahead. He's horrible. She's a good and forthright woman. The drama is killer.

Two sisters.

The pretty pink one and the disabled one.

What do you think their relationship is like?

You're wrong.

Chloe is disabled, yes, but she is a capable older sister. Her father, servants, and her sister all treat her with respect. Even when those who discriminate do not.

Alice is a romantic girl, with no brains in her skull. She's supposed to save her family from debt by wedding a wealthy Count....but she cheats on him. Her lover impregnates her, and they run away together...happily? Yes, Alice was never cut out for life as a noble wife. Her husband treats her well. They're passionately in love. Chloe loves her too much to force her to do anything. Their father feels the same.

The spoiled, beautiful daughter leaves the picture.

What about the debt?

There's only one child left. Chloe. She is respected in the walls of her mansion, but nowhere else.

No sane man would marry a woman with a crippled leg.

(This setting is painfully realistic. A couple hundred years ago disabled people had little to no rights. Chloe is a rare exception as a noble daughter who is loved and protected by her father.)

Chloe has no idea, but she does have an admirer.

His name is Duke Daimien Thisse. He fell in love with her three years ago, but she has no clue. He bullied her. He called her naive. Arrogant. He ripped her cane from her hands to show her how weak she was. She naturally assumed he's just another man who dislikes disabled people.

She met the Duke when he was at war. His men camped in her forest, behind her home. She nursed some of his fghters back to health.

Naive Chloe was unaware. As she treated the men they ridiculed her, and they tossed more inappropriate comments on top. They did not deserve her help, but she gave it.

Duke Thisse stole her cane because he was frustrated. He hated watching her care for the boorish men in his army, who whispered behind her back. So, he insulted her to her face to test her true character.

Chloe was too perfect. He suspected she was acting, as an excuse to get close to him and seduce him. He does know about her monetary situation after all.

She rejects him and proves that kindness isn't a weakness. She didn’t know the men were insulting her, but it doesn’t matter to her. They were protecting her country. Her land. She felt obligated to help, as an upstanding noble lady.

Duke Thisse is smitten.

He does get worse though. This guy is every single red flag. His fascination with Chloe stays a secret. A real one. Nobody knows he loves her. Chloe thinks he's marrying her to weaken his position on purpose, because he wants the Crown Prince to look stronger. She thinks she's a tool and she's half right. Marrying Chloe does give the Duke camouflage. He looks like a loyal dog...but he's been planning this marriage and a rebellion for three years.

Chloe won't be his Duchess.

She will be his Queen.

Daimien is also the most jealous and vindictive man on earth. He does bully and plot against his own wife when she pays attention to other men. He's un-fucking-unbearable. He threatens to kill her and her family more than once. She thinks it's because of his honor or something but no. He just does that when she mentions another man too many times.

He even throws a hissy fit when she tries to visit her own father.

This handsome servant, Gillies, figures out how twisted the Duke is. He's purely in love with his kind lady, and the persistent hero actually succeeds in exposing the rot.

Chloe finds out how deep the corruption goes far too late.

Duke Thisse doesn't tell Chloe anything. This mistress??? Fake. She's a royal spy and he feels nothing for her, but he uses this fake lover to torment Chloe. To test her and embarrass her. To see her pure true self once more. Chloe maintains her dignity, even when she must invite said mistress to a tea party.

Duke Thisse uses the death of this fake mistress to trick Chloe into loving him. He frames Chloe. He makes it look like she murdered the other woman out of jealousy, and then he saves her from life in jail.

That "selfless deed" earns her love.

Chloe earnestly lavishes love on the monster that has been tormenting her for years.

Even the Crown Prince is a pawn.

Duke Thisse needs him to to die at the right time, in the right place.

The mad prince realizes that Daimien married Chloe for love, and he gets more suspicious.

His feelings mess with the plan.

The rebellion will come regardless.

Romance begins to blossom when the Duke actually says I love you. It's not cheesy. It makes perfect sense. Chloe doesn't want money or promises. She wants to know if he saved her from a murder charge out of love.

(If only she knew)

He says yes.

It would have been so romantic if we, the readers, didn't know what was going on in his head.

By the way they don't consumate their marriage until they confirm their love. The Duke gets some points with that. He only wanted to lay with her if she felt the same way. He avoided all intimacy until that day. Now she does reciprocate....but he's been planting those feelings for almost four years.

Their love blossoms into something beautiful.

Chloe is pregnant and they all live happily...

The Crown Prince is a mentally deranged maniac. The people are turning against him.

The Duke wants more than love.

He wants to protect the nation he fought for in war.

He wants power. He wants to be King, and he has chosen a Queen.

Side note he only wants Chloe to have one baby, because he's familiar with the dangers of childbirth. I'll give him points for that one...again. He sucks but he's not the worst husband to have.

They don't live happily ever after.

Duke Thisse has more goals to strive for beyond happiness, and that's awesome. He's not a nice man, but he's obsessive and he's not bland. He's not boring on screen. That's for sure.

Chloe is an extremely cool woman, without superpowers. There is no secret ingredient. She's just a hard worker. One of her legs doesn't freaking work, and she's still more imposing than most.

Lots of people hate this one.

I think they need to read the fine print. Maybe one or two more times. On the surface this is a tale of abuse and manipulation...but remember there's no magic. Chloe never wanted to marry for love. She has no lover waiting for her.

Being the wife of a Duke isn't supposed to be easy. It's extra hard if he's ambitious.

That's conveyed very well.

BETRAYAL OF DIGNITY IS SO GOOD WHAT

Oh my god my head is filling with ideas. Like it's legitimately so interesting. I don't care about the romance (cuz god forbid) but the characters and the plot is INSANE. It's nothing that I have not seen before, but the way it was written is so interesting and jaw dropping. Like I shed tears, rolled my eyes, frowned in disdain from reading this manhwa.

Damien is the pinnacle of what the term yandere is to me. Manipulative, perfect tint for his red flag, everything that he did was to make sure that Chloe is ensnared in his hold and hand. AND HE FUCKING SUCCEEDS! He's insane for doing all of these things and thinks that Chloe still wants to be in his arm (iykyk) especially in chapter 40-50s it was interesting seeing how his mindset works when Chloe realized that everything was built on a lie to ensnare her.

Chloe too is such a strong woman. Personally, I cannot bro. I probably would have folded in ways even contortionists can't. She's smart, not weak willed, and despite giving into Damien's wiles, she still has her own heart and mind set in stone and didn't forgive him that easily. Although, it's still not that far after the latest chapter's events (chapter 50), and i'm still not sure if she'll forgive him after that, but god am I conflicted.

I cannot say about the disabled rep here though, but from what i've seen, Chloe's disability (her leg being disabled is apparently from a sickness) is not that much of a liability to her, and is also not disregarded. But I cannot say for sure!

If ya'll want a manipulative type of yandere and a strong willed darling, this manhwa is a recommendation. If I have to rank it, it's 8.5/10!

Manhwa/Webcomics with really interesting stories and beautiful art but have ick MLs that are still interesting:

Cry or Better Yet Beg

This male lead is a bird killer that I am told only gets worse as the story progresses. I’m not going to say what he’s going to do to her but it’s horrible, a trigger warning would be necessary for even a watered down explanation. He sees her as a canary in a cage, his canary in his cage if you will. The comic is being made and is still in the earlier stages of the story but there is a web novel out there.

Kneel Before Me

This is the most developed of the three. The male lead isn’t human and he doesn’t think like us in a lot of ways. He is very obsessed with the female lead. As long as he is on her brain he is happy with that and he’s going for long lasting results (or so he says but I don’t think he really truly wants her hatred). He believes that love doesn’t last but hatred can. He sees her kind of like a pet but, she does have a level of influence over him. He’s also a villain and he’s done some messed up stuff to her. He didn’t start out quite a villain though, more like her dangerous ally(?) and she’s the one thing keeping him in line. This is also based on a novel.

Betrayal of Dignity

Like the other two THIS. MAN. IS. OBSESSIVE. It’s bad for her ngl. He’s a highly manipulative man as well. These men are basically the same person in most ways. All of the women are smart, though Layla doesn’t seem calculating and she has no power in this thus far unlike the other two who can be calculating and they do at least gain power or start out with it. This female lead is reserved and will do anything for those she loves (also like the fl in KBM). She comes from a (by noble standards) penniless family. As a result of this she marries a Duke who decides he needs to marry a woman in her family (he’s shooting for her though via manipulation). This is most likely because he finds her to be fascinating and he later finds a reason to pursue her in marriage. The leads fall for one another but again, he is manipulating everything always. He is by far the most ambitious of all of the leads I’ve mentioned thus far.

All of the male leads are ick but they’re interesting and the story is interesting and I’m rooting for the female leads so I can’t not read all of these. I thought about adding The Devil and his Sacrifice but I hate the male lead more than I find the story interesting so it just gets an honorable mention.

I am absolutely screaming with every Betrayal of Dignity update. Damien’s so proud, but his fake testimony is nothing but his own little happy fantasy cause he still can’t (won’t?) figure out how to make Chloe like him. I’m sure he thinks he picked that specific story in order to embarrass Chloe, but I don’t buy it. I can’t wait for the moment (which I assume and hope is coming) when he gets his pride knocked right down to size and has to face the disadvantage he’s placed himself at in their ongoing chess game. I hope whatever Chloe has to say absolutely explodes that ridiculously overinflated ego of his. Poor Gilles though, that kid has done absolutely nothing wrong and I want to roll him up in blankets.

Cannot believe I wasted two hours on Betrayal of Dignity. If you're going to write manipulative, sadistic, garbage aristocrat, that's fine, but don't label it romance or SWOONWORTHY.

Maybe I am swooning, over this dog act thinking they were writing anything other than horror. I was determined to see it through to the end in case there was some big redeeming reveal, but I had to tap out about three quarters of the way through.

There's not even a non-con warning, blech.

Betrayal of Dignity é um webtoon escrito por KIMPA e publicado no Manta Comics, plataforma sul-coreana que publica manhwas* originais, narra a história de Chloe Verdier que, para salvar sua família da ruína, precisa encontrar um noivo para sua irmã, encontrando o duque da casa de Thisse, que os faz uma proposta para salvá-los, no entanto, a irmã foge com o homem que amava e Chloe se sacrifica para manter o acordo entre as famílias.

Como uma grande amante de enemies to lovers, essa história me prendeu desde o início. Encontrei essa história quando procurava algum webtoon que tivesse atualização nas quartas, sim, motivo bem bobo, mas olha só o resultado. Enfim, encontrei esse e meu ódio pelo Damien(Duque de Thisse), ele é aquele típico babaca que se apaixona pela “mocinha”, porém, prefere encher o saco dela ao invés de simplesmente abrir o coração e dizer que gosta dela. Chloe é a típica irmã mais velha que faz tudo pela irmã e pela família, no entanto, algo que me fez ter ainda mais simpatia é que Chloe é uma personagem PcD, ela apresenta um problema em sua perna esquerda, se locomovendo com a ajuda de uma bengala, por conta disso, ela acredita seriamente que nunca será levada a sério ou ter alguém interessado nela(mal sabe ela), mas também sabe se impor quando necessário.

A história, como já deve ter imaginado por conta do “duque”,  é de época e se passa em um reino fictício.  Amo. Inicialmente o jardim da casa Verdier, família de Chloe, é o foco, pois é onde eles têm a primeira interação, entretanto, como já era de se esperar, após a união dos dois, a ambientação se passa, em sua maioria, na casa de Thisse.

Damien Ernst Von Thisse, como duque, tem muitos apoiadores e jovens interessadas em ser a bela, recatada e do lar da casa Thisse, uma perfeita esposa troféu para ele, porém, ao ver a mulher de bengala coletando algumas ervas de cura para os feridos, o mesmo se apaixona, mas ele aceita isso? Não. Ele admite isso? Não. O que ele faz? Ele implica com ela e rouba sua bengala. Quando ele tem a oportunidade de pedir ela em casamento, ele faz ela acreditar que a irmã é um melhor partido, porque ele queria que Chloe caísse aos seus pés e se declarasse pra ele, desde o momento em que ele a encontra pela primeira vez, este se torna o desafio que ele se coloca.

Chloe Verdier, por ter essa condição em sua perna esquerda, e ouvir comentários vexatórios e diminuidores pelos corredores de sua residência e em eventos sociais, tem uma extremamente baixa autoestima, mesmo com o apoio de seu pai e sua irmã, além de seu funcionário Gilles, que percebemos durante a narrativa que ele tem um ser crush na patroa. E quando se casa e se muda para a casa do duque, os comentários a seguem, desta vez vindo dos funcionários da casa de Thisse e a sua sogra, a antiga duquesa de Thisse.

Com a personalidade fechada e difícil do duque, Chloe não consegue perceber as atitudes e comentários que explicitam o interesse de Damien nela, como quando ele pede para dançar com ela ou os olhares ciumentos para outros homens quando eles interagem ou tocam nela. Ele também não se ajuda, em um momento, ele até mesmo cria um rumor de traição para ver se ela sentia ciúmes, tudo isso seria resolvido se ele simplesmente se sentasse e conversasse com ela sobre como se sentia em relação aos dois, mas ele faz isso? Não. Ele prefere ameaçar e a colocar em situações onde ela tenha que ou pedir ajuda ou o agradecer. 

*AVISO DE SPOILER*

As tentativas de Damien chegam ao clímax nos últimos capítulos da primeira temporada do webtoon, onde o Chloe é acusada injustamente de um assassinato e, indo contra a realeza(que queria testar a lealdade de Damien), o duque a salva, expondo o verdadeiro culpado. No entanto, em um plot twist( que eu saquei assim que ele foi visitá-la pra forçar ela a pedir ajuda pra ele), descobrimos que na verdade, quem colocou a “prova do crime” nas coisas de Chloe, foi o próprio Damien, pra atingir seu objetivo de ser o salvador dela e fazer com que ela se entregasse a ele. O que acaba acontecendo, já que ela o agradece e afirma que cumprirá completamente suas “funções de esposa”, fazendo com que o casal tenha sua primeira vez.

Apesar de Damien utilizar certas artimanhas nadas convencionais e, na maioria das vezes, bem babacas, porém(sim, vou defender meu duque mal-humorado), a Chloe também chega a ser bem tapada em algumas ocasiões, por exemplo, ele vive roubando a bengala dela pra ela se apoiar nele (pra ter contato e proximidade), ele vive acariciando o rosto dela e dizendo pra ela tomar cuidado (ok, ele sempre fala merda depois, mas ele é assim meio grosso mesmo * passando aquele paninho*).

Quando ele ouve sobre os comentários maldosos sobre ela, ele a defende, depois do baile, quando eles estão no jardim, ele ameaça cortar ajuda à família dela se ela aparecer com algum outro homem, ele procura outras formas de fazer com que ela precise menos da bengala para deixá-la mais independente em relação ao andar, e toda vez que ela se autossabota ou se põe pra baixo, ele a ordena a não falar mais dessa forma de si mesma. Quando ela sofre um acidente no gelo, ele sai correndo para socorrê-la e briga com todo mundo. Ele é louco por ela, só não sabe se expressar, coitado *passando paninho*.

Enfim, acho que quem gosta de duques babacas, “mocinhas” de língua afiada, slow burn(bem slow, pipou) e relacionamento cão e gato, este webtoon é perfeito. Ele retornou com sua segunda temporada no último feriadão, com dois novos capítulos já disponíveis, então retornarei pra comentar sobre eles nas quartas(dia de postagem, aparece quinta, mas como a coreia do sul tem o horário adiantado, para nós BR é quarta) para surtarmos com Chloe e Damien(Duque Thisse), em especial com as cagadas do duque.
