I am howling at the sky for the look tonight that Harvey Guillén staked to death, spat on, and made it beg on the red carpet. Instead of just ranting to my queer fashion/fandom retail friends again, I took our collective slobber and tears to outline my plea to the fashion gods.

Why doesn’t this man have a ‘mens’wear line in every American mall? There is a gap in the market for adventurous, queer friendly suiting available through a retailer like Macys/J C Penney. Yes, retail is dying and wedding industry more so, but that’s particular to what’s available for consumers as well. Suiting is turned from off the rack into iconic by proper tailoring, but let me tell you from working all sides of the bridal salon, even up-scale clothing lines are getting rude as hell about quality and assembly to prevent tailoring and longevity.

This kid’s Disney charm would be perfect for introducing a plus size, inclusive line of fashion-forward pieces which include, say a QR code video about taking your own measurements, how adjustments work, with pieces designed to be sleek, with enough allowance for tailoring, and minding the lines in the garment to make the adjustments for plus size bodies easier. It’s no more adjustments than are made on straight size bodies, it’s just straight size bodies have more options to find a line which works with their natural shape.

But in my experience, it’s gender non-conforming folks and plus sized folks who get pushed out of finding pieces they can actually use for celebrations or work, much less pieces with actual personality that spark joy. This man has been killing it for years, really getting some clutch looks for events and invites in the fashion world. He’s showing proof of concept every time he steps in front of a camera.

Watching Harvey’s fashion evolution, I trust his fashion team and judgement to create a mid/high line for workwear to events suiting embracing a gender nonconforming audience. I can’t think of anyone better situated to become the ambassador of a brand with *the* formal wear for queer events and special occasions. I was tickled to see he sells his own merch and hope this experience convinces him of the joy working with artists and connecting their visions to a wanting public, dipping toes into the new ethical, sustainable trends in fashion. His looks alone shows he’s done his homework over the years about timelessness and early adopting trends.

For the years I worked selling/tailoring wedding dresses, there was the prophetic ‘someday… along will come the man who revives men’s fashion for events again’ to save the David’s bridal/men’s wear house lines who keep dropping plus sizes like mine and dying off. As the pet butch in the bridal salon I pleaded to the sky for better suiting options. Add that to my butch lezzy ways and trans masc circle of friends I legit spent this past Friday night drunk in a bar with a seam ripper adjusting jackets and darting pants in an unplanned sewing circle for a bachelorette until it was my round of karaoke. This isn’t the first time I’ve spontaneously started tailoring for the queers, I can’t keep up with the demand! Y’all we are in our twenties to mid thirties there should be better options than this that don’t require a vacation to LA/NY!!

I have ethical, sustainable fashion preferences about slipping in a retailer versus an online brand. But for the vision of accessible clothing to the masses pushing the envelope of the kind of quality only vintage pieces are affording the general public, this is the only celebrity really posed with the image, high energy, and bona fides to be the face of it. His connections in the fashion game are only growing as WWDITS wraps up.

If this man opened a pop-up suiting/fashion shop I’d take my limited time and resources to really dig in to the designers he promoted. I’d be howling in the streets for my celebrants to go get a Gullién. There’s no shortage online pattern makers, but there is a shortage of queer friendly shops to really get pieces that pop and it feels safe to enjoy in a retail environment. For average people wanting to engage with fashion that affirms their identity on their special day, there’s too much fucking compromise. Honestly it’s nice that I have a side hustle sewing to pattern, but I’d give it up in a fucking heartbeat for there to be actually sustainable and approachable options. I wish there was an in between of being ‘affordable’ gnc suiting in an American mall but add plus size availability and it gets sad for your most thrifty, creative friends. Someone needs the step in the gap, and why not someone at the top of the game?

Even if it was just a pop up line every few years, I’d fucking salivate over every image in that catalogue two thousand miles away for what it can teach home sewists just by virtue of curating those artisans with the express goal of queer, fat friendly designs playing together. Just the existence of vintage shops like Proud Mary creates a boom across the inter-webs of new sewists per post. Could anyone really imagine if there were actually accessible stores in key cities/supported by an online catalog with a personable, rising star as the brand face?

Please feed us more fashion, Harvey. Keep those stylists and designer friends close. Please. I cannot stress how many mascs/nb-bebes keep dropping your name every fitting consultation across this nation and it’s for good reason.

With the news that David’s Bridal has filed for bankruptcy, I just wanted to say that I hope they can find a buyer and don't shut down for good. I personally love my David's Bridal wedding dress (heck, it's my favorite thing I've ever worn!) and loved the experience I had at the Springfield location. I know it's not the fanciest, classiest joint and it's not very hip to have a mass-produced wedding dress from a chain store, but it felt welcoming and accessible to me in a way that not many wedding industry businesses do.

I feel like the gulf is diverging rapidly between 'high-end wedding' and 'budget wedding.' The average wedding dress from a bridal boutique costs almost $2,000, while online stores offer much cheaper dresses. But while there are a lot of convenient and affordable options online, it doesn't give that experience of trying on different dresses and styles in front of your family and friends with the help of a knowledgeable consultant-- and you might not realize how different the dress looks in person than online until it's too late.

And while secondhand or consignment bridal stores are an amazing option and I highly recommend them (I planned to visit one if my trip to David's Bridal didn't pan out), you won't have as many options for styles in your size if you have a specific vision or style preference like I did. David's Bridal makes the full experience of trying on wedding dresses in-store accessible to people who can't afford a designer gown. I don't like the idea of the 'bridal store' experience only being for the wealthy. But budget isn't the only reason it felt more inclusive to me.

My favorite thing about David's Bridal is their size-inclusiveness. Unlike many higher-end retailers, they have sample sizes in store in a wide variety of sizes. Many brides who visit fancy bridal stores can only hold a dress up to them and imagine what it looks like, or try it on with the whole back open and clipped into place. Typical sample gowns are often in designer bridal sizes 8-12, but that translates to something closer to street sizes 4 to 8. That leaves out a LOT of customers. Though things are changing, they haven't changed fast enough.

Not only are David's Bridal dresses fairly true to size, they have samples in a wide variety of sizes. I wear a street size 10-12 and those are the dress sizes I tried on at David's-- and I was able to try on every dress in my own size except for one brand new dress that we pulled off the mannequin. Unlike many other bridal stores, David's Bridal doesn't charge more for plus sizes, offers all their dresses in sizes 0-30, and uses models of all sizes in their advertising and catalogs. Although I didn't purchase a plus size dress from David's Bridal, a street size 10-12 is often considered plus at other higher-end bridal stores and would have much more limited options, especially within my small budget. And it made me feel way better to know that I was shopping in a place that wouldn't turn away other people I love and care about if they were to shop there, too.

Like many chain stores, David's Bridal experiences and stores can vary between locations. I've heard some horror stories about the stores, and I also was warned not to use their alterations department (I didn't). But when I had my appointment at David's Bridal, I never felt excluded from making certain choices or uncomfortable with my body, never felt like a less valuable customer, and the consultants were only positive and enthusiastic. I can sometimes feel very self-conscious when shopping for clothes, but it was a great day with some of my favorite people and had good vibes only.

I do hope that they find a buyer and keep at least some stores open, because I'd really like other people to have a nice welcoming experience like I did!

The dress shop was chaos. Brides and their mothers, sisters, friends, and more shuffled through racks upon racks of dresses and pantsuits and accessories. Carol felt her stress level rise as she, Daisy, Elena, Jemma, and Maria approached the receptionist.

“Hi!” Daisy greeted the young woman who glanced up at them from her computer. “We’re here for a 10 a.m. appointment.”

“Under Danvers?” Carol added. The receptionist didn’t hide her judgment as she took in their T-shirts and jeans. Wordlessly, she got up to find their scheduled sales consultant.

Elena grumbled sarcastically, “Sorry, didn’t realize we needed to dress up to try on dresses.”

The girls glanced around them at the other shoppers who were in full makeup and trendy upscale clothing. Carol buttoned up her red and navy flannel over her old band T-shirt to be a little less casual. Daisy sensed her discomfort and slipped an arm around her waist.

“If this doesn’t work out, we can go to one of the others on our list,” Daisy said quietly to her. “But this is the only one we had to have an appointment for, so let’s see if they have anything first before we count it out, yeah?”

Carol agreed but didn’t have a chance to say anything else as their designated saleswoman approached. They were ushered out of the way of the reception desk and to an alcove with mirrors and cushioned benches between the shopping area with the racks and the section with the dressing rooms.

“Hello there, I’m Brenda. I’ll be helping you today.” She drew the last vowel out as she assessed the group with a plastic customer service smile, a tablet, and a stylus pen. “Are we all ready to shop?”

The group exchanged nervous smiles. Brenda clapped her hands and pointed the pen to the colorful side of the store. “Bridesmaids and any other wedding party will be this way. Is the mother of the bride coming?”

“She’s on her way,” Daisy answered. Melinda promised she’d make it but had a farther distance to drive into the city from the outer suburbs.

“Excellent.” Brenda wrote something on her iPad. “Wedding party, we can get anything you see in navy, so you’re good with whatever style appeals to you, and the bride, of course. Now, which one of you is…” Brenda checked her notes. “Carol, the bride? Is that you?” She pointed the pencil at Daisy.

“That’s me.” Carol raised her hand awkwardly. “And this is Daisy, the other bride.”

“Hello.” Daisy gave a little wave with a tight-lipped smile.

Brenda pursed her maroon lips. “Ah. Two brides at once should have had two appointments. No matter, though, you’re here now.” She noticed Elena, Jemma, and Maria were still hanging around awkwardly. “You can go. Come back with no less than three options and collaborate, ladies, collaborate!” She shooed them in the direction of the bridesmaid dresses, and they obeyed.

“Now.” Brenda surveyed the two brides head to toe. “Did you each want to be surprised by what the other wears? This might be more difficult having you both here at once if you want to wait until the alter to see, as is tradition.”

Carol’s heart raced and she shoved her hands in her pockets to keep from clinging to Daisy like a life raft. Daisy looped her arm through Carol’s at the elbow and said to Brenda, “We’d like to shop together, actually. We don’t mind being a little nontraditional,” she said with that closed-lipped smile that those who knew her best recognized as a challenge.

“Yes. Well.” Brenda cleared her throat. “Where should we start?”

Carol looked to Daisy, “I think you had some picked out online to look at, right?”

“I did!” Daisy disentangled her arm from Carol’s and pulled out her phone. Already Carol felt adrift without her physical anchor in this sea of estrogen and tulle and lace. She knew her role was to be the steady one, the easy one, the low-maintenance one. But the butterflies in her stomach told her this wedding decision was different for some reason. It didn’t make any sense. Suits were less complicated than dresses. She just needed to find something that fit reasonably well, have it tailored, and hope it was ready in time for their scheduled bridal photos.

She followed Daisy around the store as they located the dresses she’d seen online. All had deep necklines, but some had thicker straps and others thin; one had tiny sparkling crystals like points of starlight and another had more floral lace. Daisy automatically rejected some she saw online that weren’t up to par in person.

Carol fell behind, distracted by a more plain-cut dress. She smoothed the fabric between her fingers. It was softer than she expected despite its sheen.

“What do you think about this one?” Daisy asked Carol, noticing her distraction. She took the dress off the rack and held it up. Nothing frilly or sparkly, just elegantly draped satin with a form-fitting bodice and a flowing skirt without extra fabric or poof. Daisy studied Carol’s reaction carefully, so Carol brightened.

“Yeah! I think you should try it on,” Carol approved. It wasn’t what Daisy had been looking for, so the choice confused Carol, but Daisy simply added it to the collection.

They found the rest of the dresses on Daisy’s favorites list and Brenda started a dressing room for them as Carol and Daisy went over to the suit rack. There was a decent selection, but nothing jumped out at Carol immediately.

“How about this?” Daisy held up a pantsuit to Carol and they turned to the mirror. It wasn’t bad. Carol accepted it and picked out another she could see being her style. Daisy insisted on one more blazer-jumpsuit combo in white that was similar to a deep red outfit Carol already had for the rare cocktail parties and formal dinners.

Carol took it but hesitated as she looked around at the other options. “I think that’s it.”

She lead the way to the dressing rooms, and they located Brenda, who had placed them in an extra large stall so they could go in together. Carol hadn’t had a favorable impression of Brenda to start the day but was grateful for her now, whether she’d seen how Carol needed Daisy by her side or if the motive had been for them to help each other zip up or simply to free up another stall for the other brides. It was probably the last one. But it didn’t matter. Daisy closed the door behind them and started to undress. She had five dresses to try on. Carol turned around to face her wall of hooks with the three suits. Somehow she felt like she should have more, but after all, she was the easy one and suits only came in so many varieties.

Eventually, she had the pants and shirt on, and she was just about to put on the first jacket when Daisy requested her help with a zipper.

Carol turned around, but she couldn’t fully see the dress on Daisy, just the back. She zipped, and then Daisy helped her get her jacket lapels straight. They walked out of the dressing room to show Brenda and see their outfits in the bigger mirrors, but they were greeted by a familiar face instead.

“Mom!” Daisy squealed. She hugged Melinda, who couldn’t hold back her smile.

“I made it just in time, it seems,” Melinda teased. “Not going to wait for your own mother to arrive?”

Carol interjected, “Well, she does have five so we could have narrowed down a few without you missing it altogether.”

Melinda nodded approvingly at Carol’s suit. “I like it!”

“Thanks.” Carol faced herself in the mirror. It was… fine? She could wear it. The sleeves were a tad long and would need to be taken in. And the trousers felt baggy in the back.

Daisy joined her in the mirror, and Carol noticed the dress gaped in the openings around Daisy’s arms and sat at an odd place on her hips.

“Yeah, I know. Me too,” Daisy said as if reading Carol’s mind. “They are good but not great. Maybe another one?”

“Yep.” Carol followed her back into the dressing room and unzipped Daisy’s dress.

“I wonder how—” Daisy started but she was interrupted by Jemma knocking, as if on cue.

“It’s just me,” Jemma called. “Letting you know we’re ready to try on but wanted you two to see which ones you like on each of us. When you’re ready.”

Daisy answered, “Actually, can you guys hold on and see ours first? I think it will go faster if the two of us finish up here and then we can see what of yours goes with ours.”

Elena’s voice came from outside the door. “That makes sense.” They relayed the plan to Maria and greeted Melinda as Daisy tried on her second dress and Carol swapped out the trousers and blazer. This time the zip was on the side of Daisy’s dress so she could do it herself, but Carol did it anyway. Maybe it was part possessiveness and the need to be useful, or just an excuse to touch her. Daisy noted it with a knowing look but didn’t say anything, and they paraded out to show their wedding party.

The women waiting for them all lit up as they saw Daisy’s dress. It was the one with thin spaghetti straps holding up a crisscrossing bodice with a V-cut neckline. The waist was accentuated with a spray of tiny crystals, which scattered subtly down the chiffon layers of the A-line skirt.

“Oh, Daisy,” Melinda said seriously. “This one.”

“It’s beautiful,” Jemma said as she stood and helped fluff out the skirt.

“Wow.” Elena and Maria said together. They took note of every detail as Daisy turned to show them the back.

Carol stepped away so she could see the full effect, and her heart swelled as Daisy met her eyes to see her reaction, even before looking in the mirror.

“Yeah,” Carol exhaled. She tried to form more eloquent words but nothing else came. “Yes. This.” She moved out of the way, and Daisy stepped up to the set of mirrors, allowing her to see it from three angles.

“Oh.” Daisy’s delight slowly bloomed. She turned to see the back herself and Jemma helped again, making sure the bottom part didn’t drag on the ground. It wasn’t much of a true train, but it was enough to need arranging.

“Do you like it?” Carol came up behind Daisy and admired her bride.

“I do.” Daisy giggled at her unintentional pun. “Do you?”

“I really do,” Carol admitted. “Try on the others just in case, but this is stunning. I’m stunned. I can’t even think. That’s what you do to me.”

Daisy laughed and admired Carol’s suit in return. “Yours is great, but I also want to see the other one.”

They returned to the dressing room and repeated the routine. Daisy’s next dress was too tight before it was even buttoned up the back, so she tried the fourth one instead, but Carol’s jumpsuit and matching blazer fit perfectly.

She waited for Daisy to be ready and looked at herself in the mirror in the stall. She pictured the pair of them at the altar, then at the reception, and in their wedding photos. Even though she had a suit so nearly like this one already, something felt off in her imaginings. It made her heart race in ways she couldn’t explain, not with excitement but with anxiety. This couldn’t be happening. She wasn’t supposed to need more options. There honestly weren’t many left, in this store, at least. This style was so her. It should feel right.

“Okay, now that’s hot. I think this one is my favorite,” Daisy said while looking at the suit. She raised her eyes to see Carol’s face. “Hey, you okay?”

Carol pressed her lips together and nodded, but Daisy knew her better than that. Still with the zip of her dress only halfway done, Daisy pulled Carol into a hug, and Carol started shaking. (Or, rather, she realized she had been shaking for a minute now already, if she was honest with herself.)

“It’s okay,” Daisy soothed. “I’m here.”

Carol pulled back and Daisy brought a hand up to brush her thumb gently across Carol’s cheek.

“What’s going on?” Daisy said softly. “Is it the suit? Or just being here?”

“I don’t know.” Carol’s voice shook as she tried to make sense of her own reaction. “I thought this would feel different, that it would be just another suit, you know?”

Carol’s gaze landed on the last dress Daisy hadn’t tried on. The one not like the others. Not so overly feminine, no revealing neckline, nothing glitzy or remotely floral or too delicate. Daisy turned to retrieve it from the hook.

“Try it?” Daisy suggested gently.

“How did you…?” Carol started to ask.

“Just in case.” Daisy shrugged. “Even if it was for fun, or just because we’re in a bridal shop and you can, I don’t care. I wanted you to have the opportunity. If you wanted it.”

Carol steadied herself. She remembered her talk to Daisy before the cake tasting. It was their wedding! This was their one chance to try all of this stuff.

“Yeah, I mean, might as well. We’re here.”

Carol zipped up Daisy first and then changed as Daisy admired and critiqued her own dress, noting places that might need alterations to take it in a bit on the side or if the floral lace was too much, especially given her name.

It was Carol’s turn to ask Daisy to tie up her dress in the back. They knew their friends and family outside were waiting but for this moment, they stood side by side, just the two of them in the narrow mirror.

“Okay,” Carol breathed shakily.

“Yeah?” Daisy asked. “Ready to show ‘em?”

Carol opened the door in answer and stepped out to a chorus of gasps and then smiles.

“It’s perfect,” Melinda affirmed.

Maria and Elena and Jemma pointed out their favorite parts.

“You like it?” Carol asked them.

“Uh, yeah, you’re gorgeous,” Maria answered. “But the question is, do you? Does it feel like you?”

Carol turned away from them to look at herself in the mirrors. For the first time in a long time, she felt truly pretty. Not hot or sexy or even beautiful in her usual aesthetic. But pretty in a way she hadn’t felt maybe since she was a little girl. And certainly never in a dress as an adult. Dresses usually felt like obligations or like she was wearing someone else’s clothes to conform to a dress code.

A wedding gown, though. This felt right, somehow. Just for this. She wasn’t only marrying Daisy, who was a proper bride. She felt like a bride herself. A memory came to mind so vividly, she felt like she was in it: twirling as fast as she could in circles to make her long, white skirt flare one Easter. She must have been seven or so. Her dad was nervous about going to his parents’ church despite not being churchgoers themselves, and when she refused to stop twirling, begging for him to look at how pretty she was, he grabbed her wrist so hard it bruised. She grew out of that dress months later, and by the time she was wearing dresses to school dances, she was far too “grown up” and cool to twirl. Still, that little part of her healed now seeing herself in this white dress. He wasn’t here to stop her from being her true, wild, and free self anymore. And he’d never have that power again. No one would.

“Stay right there,” Daisy said and she gestured wordlessly for Jemma to join her in the dressing room stall. In what felt like mere seconds later to Carol, still taking in the rush of emotions, Daisy was back, this time in her previous dress that everyone agreed was “the one.”

“There it is,” Daisy said softly, looking at their reflections.

“Hm?” Carol asked, pulling herself from the urge to twirl in this crowded dressing room area.

“The spark.” She turned to face Carol and read her swirling emotions. “At least, you seem happy. Are you? With the dress? You can try on more, as many as you want.”

“This is it,” Carol confirmed. “I get it now. The spark.”

Daisy’s smile bloomed. “You’re beautiful.”

“So are you.” Carol returned her smile. “We’re a little biased, though.” She turned to their very patient wedding party.

Maria stood. “We all agree you’re both beauty queens, but we’ve got some dresses to try on too, and Brenda said we only have 20 minutes in our time slot.”

Melinda made a bored wrap-it-up motion. Carol wasn’t fooled, though. She saw the wistful expression on Melinda’s face when Daisy wasn’t looking. Her baby girl was buying a wedding dress that made her look like a fairytale princess come to life.

Carol followed Daisy into the dressing room stall to put their normal clothes back on. She hummed a little laugh to herself as she pictured Daisy in a tiara with the dress.

“What?”

“Nothing,” Carol deflected. She hung her dress back on the hanger and then grabbed her T-shirt, flannel, and jeans. “Just picturing a little girl seeing you in that dress and wondering if you’re her princess storybook come to life.”

“Aw, babe.” Daisy, in only her bra and jeans with her T-shirt in her hand, sent Carol a loved-up, heart-eyed expression. Carol couldn’t help herself with Daisy half-dressed like this. She drew Daisy in for a quick kiss. Daisy reciprocated with more but pulled away. “On a time crunch here, but more of those when we get home, please.”

“Always.” Carol let her go, and they finished dressing so they could go out and see their bridal party’s choices. Melinda’s dress could wait until later, but Elena, Maria, and Jemma were already in their dressing rooms trying on their first choices when Carol and Daisy emerged.

Just within the window of Brenda nervously urging them to be mindful of the time but not yet kicking them out, they settled on different (but similar enough, and the same shade of navy) dresses for each of their body types.

A few of the dresses would need minor alterations, but Brenda assured them that it would only be a three-week wait since their seamstresses only worked with in-house purchases. It was then time for the seamstress to pin where alterations were needed. Daisy and Carol put their dresses back on when it was their turn, and an assistant took notes on which of the dresses were ready to go and which were staying at the shop for their work. Carol’s was the right length and had a crisscrossing adjustable tie up the back so she could simply have it tightened or loosened for a perfect fit. Daisy’s was a little loose, even when she sat down, but the seamstress assured her the adjustments were very minor and not to worry at all.

With all of that settled, they were ready to check out. They passed the veils, tiaras, and hair accessories on the way to the register. Daisy picked out a silver and gold swirl barrette with tiny crystals and offered to buy them each one as their wedding party gifts. Carol noted how the entwined silver and gold represented them with the crystals as their friends, adding light in their lives.

“Wow, that’s poetic,” Elena complimented. “I’m impressed. I was just going to say they are versatile if some of us want our hair down or up or pulled back.”

“Also an advantage,” Jemma agreed.

As they left, the adrenaline of the crowded, busy bridal shop faded into exhaustion.

“Who’s up for lunch?” Melinda asked. They all agreed they were starving and that lunch was exactly what they needed next. They packed into Melinda’s SUV and drove to a place Elena recommended that had a fun atmosphere. And best yet, it was the type of place they could have a proper bridal-party party with plenty of eye-rolling at the expense of the bridezillas in the dress shop and reminiscing about their own weddings and stories of romance.

Carol had heard her own parents’ unromantic story of their wedding. They had just figured it was time and the thing couples did after a while, so they got married. At least, that’s how Carol’s dad told it. Her mom always managed to find some rose-colored glasses to cover over the pragmatism and brought up the flowers or the music or the thoughtful gifts they still had in a cabinet somewhere. But the truth was, she was old enough and he had a steady job, and that’s just what was expected of them.

Telling this story garnered sympathetic looks from the other women, but Melinda concurred.

“It was a lot of pressure back then, even in graduate school. Daisy’s dad was about to write his dissertation, and I was ready to put my law degree to use in the real world. But all anyone ever asked us was when we were getting married.”

Jemma and Elena agreed that the pressure was still real. Especially from Elena’s family, who were quite traditional in many ways.

Maria stayed silent but exchanged a look with Carol.

“Yeah, see…” Daisy interjected, “we don’t really have that problem most places. Sure, my grandma knew I wanted to marry Carol a year before I even proposed—”

Carol held up her ring in demonstration.

“—But even engaged, most people assume we’re marrying men who are just not around.”

“Tell them about the old lady,” Maria said and sipped her drink.

Carol obliged. “Oh god, it took this one woman in our building ages to figure it out. She would see us together and ask how our young men were and say how nice it was that we would both be getting married so the other didn’t get left behind, which happened with roommates she’d seen before. It was, like, every time we’d see her in the elevator.”

Daisy jumped in. “I’d literally have my arm around Carol or we’d be holding hands and she’d ask when she was going to get to meet our future husbands. It just did not compute for her.”

Maria smiled devilishly. “Now tell the next part.”

Carol picked up the story. “We stood right in front of her on the elevator, and I put my hand in Daisy’s back pocket.”

“And I caught on to what we were doing and kissed you,” Daisy added. She turned to the rest of the table with a sassy shrug. “I think she got the idea.”

Maria shook her head. “It’s been more than just her, though. When I was helping Carol shop for rings, they just couldn’t understand why she was only interested in women’s rings. Why wasn’t her boyfriend doing the shopping?”

“So yeah,” Daisy concluded, “not a lot of pressure here, even though we’ve been together for years.”

Jemma pinched her brow in empathy. “I can’t imagine. I’m so sorry. Here I thought it was annoying that Fitz and I are already starting to get asked about kids.”

“Wait, really?” Daisy blinked in disbelief. “You haven’t even been married a year. You’re only 23!”

A notification sounded on Elena’s phone. “Speaking of kids, mine needs to be picked up from daycare.”

Maria said she also needed to pick up Monica from her dad’s place, and the after-shopping party was officially over. They paid and piled back in Melinda’s SUV to retrieve their own cars at the bridal shop. Then Melinda spent a few hours with Daisy and Carol going over other wedding details at their place before heading home.

When they were alone, Daisy and Carol collapsed into their couch.

“Ugh and now we need to make dinner,” Carol whined.

“Leftovers in the fridge,” Daisy reminded her but didn’t move. They sat in silence for a few minutes.

Carol gestured to her wedding dress in its garment bag, draped across the back of a chair. “I should probably hang that up.”

“Hey.” Daisy lightly touched Carol’s arm. “Do you want to talk about what happened today?”

“That I bought a dress? Voluntarily?” Carol could hardly believe it herself.

“That, but more the thing before that in the suits.”

Carol shrugged. “I thought it was going to be easy. I’m supposed to be the easy one, you know?”

“Wait.” Daisy sat up. “Supposed to? Do you really think that?”

“I didn’t mean it like someone was forcing me, just that usually, most of the decisions we have to make, you have a stronger opinion. Which is great,” Carol rushed to clarify. “Because things actually get decided, but I guess I wasn’t prepared for today to turn out differently than I expected.”

Daisy confessed, “You know, sometimes it would be nice if you did want to make more decisions. I don’t want to be one of those controlling brides who freaks out if something doesn’t go her way. I just want this wedding to be perfect for us. You deserve it.”

“I deserve it? You’re the one who has been dreaming about this all her life.”

Daisy took Carol’s hand in hers and soothed her thumb over the back. “You’ve been through so much for us.”

“It’s worth it.” Carol barely got the words out before Daisy kissed her deeply. Carol pulled back after a while. “And I can help more. I hear you. I don’t want to be like the lesbian version of some checked-out groom who just shows up. I think that’s a little of what today was about. Or I don’t want to look like your roommate in a suit that’s just a guest. I’m a bride too, you know?”

Daisy’s brow furrowed. “Have I been treating you like that?”

Carol realized what she meant and quickly reassured her. “No! No, I was afraid you thought I was treating you like that, as if these things were up to you, the way traditionally a bride would plan everything. But it’s not that they aren’t a big deal. They are. It’s our wedding!” Carol’s voice softened as she revealed the truth, “But that’s the thing: every decision has genuinely felt easy because it’s a commitment to you, not just to some event. And committing to you is what matters for me.”

Daisy melted. “That’s exactly why all of this matters so much to me. It isn’t really about the table decorations and the floral arrangements. It’s about having the best day ever with you.”

Carol brought up a hand to caress Daisy’s cheek, and Daisy closed her eyes.

Carol neared her lips and whispered, “I don’t need the best day ever. I want you through all the days, for better or worse, as long as we both shall live.”

“Oh, is that all,” Daisy teased and pulled her in for a long, sweet kiss. “I do.”

Lessons in dress shopping

Every little girl fantasizes about the day she gets to put on a wedding dress for the first time.

Even at age 10, I had strong opinions about the dresses showcased on Say Yes to the Dress. I couldn’t wait to get married at age 20 just like my parents did. Well, things didn't quite work out that way (which I couldn’t be happier about now!). I’m 28 and I became engaged in October 2022. One of the first thoughts in my head after the initial shock wore off was, “Oh no, I don’t want to go dress shopping.”

I lost my mom to cancer when I was 11. It’s hard for anyone to go through a loss but especially on a child. My dad was the one with the career. He worked long days commuting to his job in New York City. After my mother passed, my dad tried his best to make sure I was fed. He didn’t know how to cook. He would make easy meals like spaghetti, frozen TV dinners, hamburgers, or chicken nuggets. I also decided to become a vegetarian when I was 14. I ate plenty of slices of pizza and plenty of bowls of pasta. It was easy and what worked for the both of us. This was before all the different types of mock meat they have at the grocery stores.

On a diet of pizza, pasta, and hormonal grief, you could assume I wasn’t in the best shape. I was shaped differently than all of the other girls in my grade. I wore a size 14. Other girls my age were wearing 0s and 2s. I didn’t have body image issues. I knew that I was also further along in puberty than they were.

I have spent most of my 20s trying to lose weight. I tried Keto, the meditteranean diet, low sugar, you name it. I have tried any work out plan I could get my hands on. It wasn’t until 2020 that I was able to have a doctor take my weight struggles seriously and my doctor finally ordered bloodwork for me. I was able to lose 30 pounds with very, very strict calorie counting. However, It was clearly insufficient for me. Eventually, the weight came back. When I received my bloodwork results, I had high testosterone. It’s almost impossible to lose weight when your hormones aren’t balanced.

I have been working on it losing weightfor two years now. I have finally taken medications that help me feel the way a functioning adult should. I have lost weight, but I was still uncomfortable regarding the idea of dress shopping. I spent countless hours admiring Pinterest boards and looking at the beautiful, curvy models wearing gorgeous ivory gowns. I couldn’t picture myself in gorgeous ivory gowns that showed off my figure.’m not shaped the same way as these models. I carry more weight in my stomach and my face. How am I supposed to feel beautiful?

I booked everything for my wedding early. It wasn’t until I spoke to my potential florist that I felt that I needed to go look at wedding dresses. To be honest, I was going to save that for the last possible moment. My florist wasn’t going to meet with me until I had my dress picked because she needed to arrange a bouquet to coordinate my gown. I guess I had to make an appointment as soon as I could.

I was anxious.

I was sick to my stomach thinking about putting on a dress; especially in front of other people. I prepared myself to look my absolute worst. I expected these dresses to hug every curve - in a bad way. My brain had already accepted the fact that I’d be forced to wear a dated ball gown because of my body type.

I wasn’t going to let my poor self-esteem ruin one of the most memorable days of my life. I put on makeup in a traditionally bridal style. I wore a smokey eye with the tiniest bit of glitter on the inner corner of my eye. I curled my hair to look like it had just come out of French braids. I wore my most expensive perfume.

I made it to my appointment and met with the sweetest bridal stylist. The stylist pulled the dresses I picked from the online selection. I tried on the first one - I fell in love. It was a gorgeous mermaid style dress. The bodice was lace with plenty of tule emerging from the thighs. The neckline was plunging and there were whimsical detached sleeves.

I felt empowered.

I felt confident.

I felt like this dress was for me.

I couldn’t pick the first dress I try on, right? Of course not! I needed to try more.

I tried three more dresses on. Each was a different style, shape and texture. These were all dresses I liked on the models. It wasn’t until my stylist asked how I was feeling about the choices I made. One felt too matronly, another hugged my stomach way too tightly, and the third just wasn’t right for a Halloween wedding. My stylist had an idea of what I would like at this point. I let her pick one more for me.

She carried the dress in, and at first, I had no idea what I was looking at.

There were so many different textures and patterns that I thought it would be a hideous dress. BUT I was wrong. It was perfect. The dress was similar to the first dress; but better. There were bits of glitter down the middle of the bodice. The tulle that extended from the thighs was patterned with the smallest bit of intricate lace. The dress hugged my curves; the right way this time.

I felt like the most beautiful bride.

I couldn’t stop looking at myself.

It was also in that moment that I realized I was being too hard on myself. I should be proud of the small accomplishments I have made with regard to my health. My future husband clearly thinks I am beautiful enough to be his wife. My family cried when I put on a dress in front of them. My own worst critic is myself. I was able to find a dress that looked fantastic on my atypical body type.

There was a lesson for me to learn: women are too hard on themselves. We don’t need crash diets to fit a dress. We are not born to fit in clothes, clothes are made to fit us.
