ＩＭＡＧＩＮＥ: Tyson Jost Finds Home in You Celly's 300 Follower Appreciation

-Tyson had played in many cities since he had been drafted by Colorado in 2016

-he had hoped that was where he would play out his career

-that he would win a cup with his teammates that had come to be his family

-and that he could settle down there and start a family of his own -but he had never quite found his footing -he never found love

-and when it came time for the Avalanche to chance their chance at a Stanley cup

-Tyson became a casualty of the trade deadline

-he was traded to Minnesota for Nico Sturm -but there was nothing for him in Minnesota

-only underperformance and a waiver line

-that’s when Buffalo claimed him and set him on a trajectory to have one of the best seasons of his career

-and it led him to you

-he had been on the way to practice one morning the first time he had set eyes on you

-the drive threw for coffee had been too long

-so he decided to go inside

-you were seated at one of the tables alone, a coffee in front of you and a book in hand

-and from there you simply knew him as Tyson

-it became a usual thing

-the two of you meeting at the coffee shop once a week and talking over drinks

-you didn’t think much of it beyond a blossoming friendship of two people who just happened to be at the shop at the same time

-until one week he didn’t show up

-you tried not to be disappointed

-you both had lived outside the coffee shop door

-hell, you didn’t even know what he did for work

-but you did know that you had a crush on him

-you tried not to be too excited when you saw him the following week

-he was already at the shop

-at the table you shared

-your drink already waiting for you

-as well as a book you had talked about wanting but were having trouble getting your hands on

-you tried to refuse it

-Tyson insisted as he apologized for ghosting you last week

-work had taken him away for travel

-but that’s also how he found the book in a small bookshop in another city

-you thanked him a little awestruck that he had done something so thoughtful

-then you became curious

-“do you travel a lot for work?”

-“yeah, feels like I’m on the road more often than not. Buffalo doesn’t quite feel like home yet-”

-“oh, so you’re pretty new to the city?”

-“been here two months maybe, was in Minnesota before this, Colorado was home before that”

-“what kind of job has you moving around so much?”

-he seemed almost hesitant to tell you as if his career would form some sort of preconception about him

-he likes being “just Tyson” with you

-but then he tells you that he plays for the Buffalo Sabres and you’re left feeling stupid

-your family loves hockey

-they love the Sabres

-and you hadn’t even realized you had been having coffee with their newly acquired forward the last few weeks

-but you didn’t let that change how you saw him

-or how you treated him

-it wasn’t even a contributing factor into you saying yes when he asked you out to dinner

-you would have said yes nonetheless

-it started with dinner

-a restaurant fancier than anywhere you would have picked out

-and soon your regular conversations over coffee became dates

-you showed him the city

-enjoyed a movie at the theatre

-or nights in at his place or yours together

-Tyson didn’t kiss you until the third real date when he had dropped you off at home

-and you didn’t spend the night together until well into March

-it was waking up next to you that Tyson had a revelation

-Colorado had never been home

-Minnesota was never going to be home

-Buffalo may not even be his home

-Home wasn’t a place

-it was a feeling

-it was the feeling you gave him

-he loved you

-and he could only hope to sign an extension with Bufflo

-or at the very least that you would follow him to the next city

-as you could make anywhere feel like home

hi anni!

the league itself? not really! as much as i like to say that there is a conspiracy against the canadian teams because no canadian team has won the cup since montréal in 1993, there isn't actually a conspiracy it's just me (and other canadian hockey fans) being bitter!

however there are some features about the canadian teams that are different than the american ones that are disadvantages for the canadian teams, and subsequently make them a bit worse and harder to attract players.

for example, canadian fans are much more engaged with their hockey teams than most american markets. outside of minnesota, buffalo and boston (and new york, philly, pittsburgh, new jersey, and nashville when they have good teams), american teams really don't care as much about their local hockey team. they usually care more about american football, basketball and even baseball over hockey. playing hockey in canada means more reporters questioning you about everything and fans demanding excellence from you at all times. if you have a few off games but you play for dallas or florida or san jose, nobody cares but if you have one off game in canada, you will be asked questions about it for weeks. the pressure is so much more here. this also goes in the other direction too, some teams in the states straight up have empty arenas because nobody cares about their team, and that is hardly ever the case in canada even when the team is straight up awful.

theres a couple other reasons why playing in canada is a bit less attractive for most players (canadian teams haven't performed well in the playoffs recently, less taxes in the us, players don't want to be recognized and interrogated about their play when doing regular activities like grocery shopping etc) but the actual league doesn't contribute to it very much

2023 Retrospective - November & December

And here we are once again at the end of the year. I'm queueing this to post on December 31st but I'm actually making this post on December 22nd so if anything significant happens between then and December 31st it may or may not be in the final post. Anyway!

November: I. was. BUSYYYYYYYY

The weekend after the AWA/SC Comicon gauntlet, I drove up to Newport News, Virginia to attend Nekocon with the Carolina Manga Library! Just like last year, it was a nice chill con. I was very graciously allowed to stay in the hotel room on Sunday night and check out Monday morning, so...

I did Virginia Things again! I started out at Bluebird Gap Farm, where I got to pet sheep and goats again, see a bunch of ducks and geese, and overall had a great time. I love Bluebird Gap

I went to the Virginia Zoo again, and that was a great time too! I didn't get to see the buffalo again, but I DID get to get up close and personal with their goats this year. And I got emotional over frogs, as I usually do when zoos have a reptile/amphibian exhibit.

I found a local used CD shop and got a STACK of CDs, many of which I'd actually been hunting for for a while

On November 8th I went to a special dubbed screening of the Adventure 02 movie. After how Kizuna went I was prepared to have my emotions torn out and stomped on but surprisingly it was just kind of... a 02 movie. Nothing huge happened, nobody died.

The weekend after Nekocon, I vended at Mythic Con, a local con here in Charlotte more focused on tabletop and board games. I did surprisingly well, just like with ConCarolinas back in June!

I did, however, ditch the con on the Sunday to go to the Carolina Renaissance Faire with a couple of Columbia friends. It was fun! They've streamlined parking and while it was crowded, it wasn't unmanageable. At this point, the Tortuga Twins (all three of them) and the guys from the joust are like old friends to me, not in a parasocial way but in a "oh hey, I know that guy! Kind of!" way.

The weekend after THAT I attended my final con of the year and it was a DISASTER. I had my reservations about it since it was a one day Sunday con seemingly more focused on comics, and the group running it is running a bunch of other one day pop up events in the southeast. I didn't even make my table cost back. It was terrible. I think I'll pretend Mythic Con was my last one of the year...

I had a surprising 5 days off in a row, so Lauren bought me plane tickets and I went to visit her up in St. Paul Minnesota! It was my first time flying solo and only my third time flying, period. I hate airports. But St. Paul was great! We went to the Mall of America for day one, and then a local zoo, cat café, and some other shops on day two. It had snowed overnight, so I got the full winter in Minnesota experience and I LOVE THE COLD. I really do need to move up north. It was 70 degrees when I got back to Charlotte.

I started playing Baldur's Gate 3 on my steam deck!

I actually for real finished Practice Makes Perfect. All 40 chapters.

The second DLC for Pokémon SV dropped, so I played through The Teal Mask in preparation and then marathoned the Blueberry Academy DLC as soon as I could on launch night. I downloaded the update and started streaming at 8:30pm on Wednesday night and streamed until around 5am, took a nap, and got back to it at 1pm on Thursday, finishing up that evening. Teal Mask was fine, pretty basic story. Blueberry Academy was... a disappointment. Just what I was expecting, to be honest.

First Post Woo!

Hello! My name's Holland, my mom's name is Julie, and we're the Tieman Demons XD. I had a hard time coming up with a duo name for us, ok? This blog was first proposed around 10 years ago, when my mom and I were still travelling, but we never actually pursued it. I decided that I'd create it just for fun so that we can blog about our time in Las Vegas this coming December (2023), where we'll be travelling to celebrate our birthdays - Mine is the 12th and hers is the 5th. This is just to sort of simulate what that travel blog may have looked like, and we thought it might be fun to share our experience in Las Vegas. For some background, my mom and I have travelled all across the country, hailing from Illinois and living in a few different states, namely New York, New Mexico and Nevada, specifically Buffalo/Niagara Falls, Alamogordo, Las Cruses, and of course, Las Vegas, one of our all time favorite places to have ever lived. I think I was 9 or 10 when we moved there, and I was 10-11 when I had to leave after shifts in custody, returning to Illinois where we currently live together. Now I'm 20. I've been planning this trip for a long time, deciding on places to visit, shop and eat and watching new developments from afar while waiting for the right time to return (yes, I adore Keith Lee!!). I thought that it would be fitting to return to Vegas once I was old enough to fully indulge in everything it has to offer - drinking, gambling, clubbing, and so on. Too bad pools will be out of season, I had briefly considered visiting some topless rooftop ones that I remember longing to visit as a kid (haha). Over the next few months, I'll be working to save up and prepare for this trip, though we already have the vast majority of the money we need for it saved (thank god for unemployment settlements XD). I plan on posting here about plans of where I'd like to visit, though I don't plan on giving any specific dates for me and my mom's safety, and because we'll mostly be going with the flow for most of the trip. I also hope to answer any questions about past travelling experiences, speak on those experiences, and take suggestions for places to visit while in Vegas. Anyway, this is much longer than I meant for it to be, so here's a picture from about 10 years ago, and then a picture from about a year ago from a trip to Minnesota :)

LGBTQ-owned bookstores have been around for decades. Founded in 1973 in the City of Brotherly Love, Philly AIDS Thrift @ Giovanni’s Room—honoring James Baldwin’s queer classic—is perhaps the oldest surviving LGBTQ and feminist bookstore in America. Charis Books and More, in Decatur, Georgia, was launched a year later. A Room of One's Own has been a fixture in downtown Madison, Wisconsin since 1975, and Chicago’s Women and Children First was started in 1979 by two women who fell in love as students at the University of Illinois.

These stores are more than shops to browse for books; they are hubs for both entertainment and enlightenment, meeting grounds for hearts and minds. They are, above all, vital community spaces.

Losing Kayvon Thibideaux certainly isn’t going to help Oregon but he’s not usually on the field as a run stopper anyway and if Ohio State learned anything last week it’s that they can just run until they feel like throwing a pass. Oregon actually has some legit talent on the d-line besides Thibideaux but the Ducks are gonna be hard-pressed to keep things within two scores here.

If Oregon can’t make a game of it in Columbus look out because this time block is an absolute wasteland. There is scant reason to turn the TV on for the early schedule other than gambling purposes.

My theory is that VPI is not actually any good but UNC’s 2020 season was a well-timed fluke and the last hurrah of Mack Brown’s storied coaching career. The Hokies are at home, though, and MTSU is almost certainly not on the same athletic level as the Turkey Gobblers so I’d probably take the home team -20 if I were so inclined to wager on this particular game that is being broadcast on the ACC’s new pornography channel.

It’s a bit weird to be talking trades before the start of the Stanley Cup Final. In September. But after months of inaction on the roster-building front, things are heating up. Penguins GM Jim Rutherford already has one major trade under his belt. His protege in Minnesota, Bill Guerin, is taking care of business in getting Jonas Brodin locked up to a long-term extension and trading Eric Staal to Buffalo. This work can’t wait. Not with the draft barreling down on us. And neither can our annual Trade Big Board.

Let’s dive in:

1. Patrik Laine, Winnipeg Jets: There’s a strong belief from other teams that Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff would really like to give his top-six forwards a different look. “The only untouchables up front are (Mark) Scheifele and (Blake) Wheeler,” suggested one NHL source. Laine is a fascinating option. There’s no doubting his talent and he’s a bona fide game-breaker. But he’s also not universally loved. “He seems disinterested at times,” said one exec of Laine. It would have to take a monster offer to pry Laine away from the Jets, but they need a No. 2 center along with a top-four defenseman and are loaded on the wing. They’d be dealing from a position of strength here.

2. Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Arizona Coyotes: There are executives outside Arizona who believe the Coyotes are open to moving just about any player over 25 years old, which makes the Coyotes roster an interesting place to look to improve your team. While new GM Bill Armstrong might have other plans, Ekman-Larsson’s patience with the rebuilding in the desert could be running thin. The problem here is that his contract is rich even for a player of his caliber, with seven years remaining on a deal that averages $8.25 million. “It’s pricey and long,” said one exec. “That’s a big bite.”

3. Matt Dumba, Minnesota Wild: There are teams who would have been very interested in Jonas Brodin if the Wild weren’t able to get that deal done, but with Brodin locked up long term, Dumba is now one of the most appealing defensemen on the market. Colleague Mike Russo broke down the expansion draft complications that make a Dumba trade a real possibility and it would take a player like Dumba to get the center the Wild are seeking, according to other teams. “Billy wants a centerman somehow,” said one NHL executive. “(Dumba) is dynamic and right-shot defensemen are a premium.”

4. Matt Murray, Pittsburgh Penguins: There’s no doubt Murray struggled this year, and he has a .909 save percentage over the last three regular seasons. That takes the shine off a goalie who had two Stanley Cups before he was 23. But we all know hockey executives love goalies who have proven they can win under the highest stakes. “You like the fact that he’s won two Cups,” said an exec. “You’d have to hope there’s a return to that.” A team like Edmonton might make sense here but signability is key. If he’s willing to take a short-term deal to rebuild his value, the options open up. If he wants, say, John Gibson money ($6.4 million per) it’ll make finding a fit more challenging.

5. Frederik Andersen, Toronto Maple Leafs: After the Maple Leafs traded Kasperi Kapanen, colleague James Mirtle reported that Andersen was being shopped as well. The appeal here, besides Andersen being a legit starting goalie, is that his actual salary next season is $1 million now that his bonus has been paid. For as much talk as has been made about the flat cap, the bigger issue is going to be self-imposed budgets, so Andersen has appeal for teams looking to upgrade in goal without a lot of out-of-pocket expense.

6. Kyle Palmieri, New Jersey Devils: There has been some conversation on what an extension looks like between the Devils and Palmieri, so if that gets done the trade speculation can disappear. But GM Tom Fitzgerald did really well at the trade deadline and he did so in part because Blake Coleman had term and the Devils had leverage. One source on a potentially interested team said the price on Palmieri is high in part because the Devils are in no rush at this point. “(The Devils) got a lot for Coleman and (Taylor) Hall,” said the executive. “I don’t think this market is reflective of deadline pricing because you’re only getting one playoff run (out of Palmieri).”

7. Max Domi, Montreal Canadiens: While Domi’s name has been attached to trade rumors, the reality is that this probably isn’t the time to maximize his trade value. GM Marc Bergevin would be selling low. Domi really likes playing in Montreal and wants to stay. According to an NHL source, contract talks are ongoing. Maybe the better question is just how much do the Canadiens see Domi in their long-term plans? “They want to see more consistency from him,” said one NHL source. Another player to watch is Phillip Danault. If contract talks with him stall, he would draw trade interest.

8. Marc-Andre Fleury, Vegas Golden Knights: There doesn’t seem to be a lot of doubt that Vegas is going to find a way to keep Robin Lehner around long term. The unanswered question is if Fleury would then want out or if he would make life in Vegas difficult by using his partial no-trade clause to prevent GM Kelly McCrimmon from dealing him. If Vegas retains money, he’d be an interesting fit in Colorado, a team some believe would like to upgrade their goaltending situation if the right opportunity presented itself.

9. Kris Letang, Pittsburgh Penguins: It’s hard to imagine a scenario where the Penguins move Letang and are better for it in the short term. But this piece from colleague Rob Rossi does a great job of examining the Letang situation and reports that Letang believes a trade now or before next season is expected. The talk around Letang may just be Rutherford getting a feel for what his options are as he makes another push.

10. Nik Ehlers, Winnipeg Jets: If you’re moving one of either Laine or Ehlers, Ehlers might be the Jets forward most appealing for teams looking to make a big deal with the Jets. He’s still young, he’s going to score in the neighborhood of 30 goals and he comes with cost certainty. Teams definitely noticed that Ehlers looked like a different player in the postseason this year, which might actually make the Jets less eager to trade him. “Not only did he score, he went after guys physically,” said a rival talent evaluator. “That might have moved the pendulum in his favor.”

11. Andreas Johnsson, Toronto Maple Leafs: It could also be Alexander Kerfoot in this spot but as the Maple Leafs look to retool their team, there are people around the league who believe Johnsson is the player they’d prefer to trade and where talks have centered even if they’d be selling low. He’s 25 years old with a 20-goal season under his belt so there’s value, but removing his $3.5 million cap hit from the equation would give GM Kyle Dubas more flexibility to make upgrades.

12. Brady Skjei, Carolina Hurricanes: Carolina acquired Skjei at the deadline and are getting numerous calls from teams looking to see if they’d be willing to spin him again. The Hurricanes aren’t against it, but it would have to take a no-brainer to make it happen.

13. Darcy Kuemper, Arizona Coyotes: The Coyotes recently signed goalie Adin Hill to a one-way contract, which supports the belief from other teams that they’re looking to trade one of their goalies, either Kuemper or Antti Raanta. Raanta has been great for the Coyotes (.924 save percentage in 92 games), he just can’t stay on the ice. So the bigger return would be for Kuemper. One source suggested that the asking price on Kuemper is a first-round pick. “And it’s probably worth it if you’re in the hunt,” he said. San Jose and Carolina could be options here.

14. Josh Anderson, Columbus Blue Jackets: Anderson has been on this list before and teams love what he brings to the table. But at this point, an extension in Columbus remains a possibility. One NHL source described contract talks between Anderson and the Blue Jackets as “fruitful” for the restricted free agent. One executive expressed concerns about what a trade for Anderson, who played just 26 games last season, might cost both in assets and in a long-term contract. “If he’s healthy, he’s a beast,” he said. “The problem is, if they want a big asset, you can’t do that. You can’t give a first-rounder for one year of a guy and then try to get him signed before UFA. (Agent Darren Ferris) is going to ask for seven times six and he had one fucking goal last year.”

15. Nikita Zadorov, Colorado Avalanche: Zadorov was quietly playing in the playoffs with an injured wrist and had surgery last week to repair it, with an expected five-week recovery before he’s 100 percent. Zadorov loves Colorado. He also sees what’s coming with Colorado’s loaded defense and may end up pushing hard for a trade if he doesn’t anticipate getting the opportunity to play the role he expects. “Something needs to happen there,” said one NHL source.

16. The negotiating rights to Taylor Hall: According to a source, the Coyotes have made multiple attempts to sign Hall and the expectation is that they won’t give up on that front. But as of right now, Hall plans on testing unrestricted free agency. Without the interview window, there’s an advantage to be had for teams to try and get a head start and it would make sense for Arizona to try to get an asset back for numerous reasons. “They’re trying to get back the picks they’ve lost,” said one executive of the Coyotes, referencing the league’s punishment for Arizona’s scouting violations.

17. Erik Johnson, Colorado Avalanche: Teams believe the Avalanche are open to moving Johnson and it makes sense, as much as the Avalanche like him both on defense and in that room. He’s 32 years old. He’s owed $6 million for the next two seasons and Cale Makar’s next contract is going to be a significant raise. Colorado might want to get out front of any future cap issues, although Johnson would have a say because of a modified no-trade clause that allows him to choose 19 teams to which he can be traded, an NHL source confirmed. “I don’t know if (a Johnson) trade is this year, they only need to make a couple tweaks,” said one executive. “But they’ve got D coming.”

18. Noah Hanifin, Calgary Flames: It might be more exciting to talk about moving Johnny Gaudreau or Sean Monahan but that doesn’t appear to be a priority for GM Brad Treliving at this moment. That said, there are definitely people around the league who see Calgary as a team to watch in the next month for something major. “I just think that Calgary’s results might be putting a bit of urgency there in some fashion,” said one team executive. The Calgary defense is loaded with potential unrestricted free agents so it’s certainly a fluid situation. But if the Flames can re-sign TJ Brodie, with Juuso Valimaki coming back, there’s flexibility to use Hanifin as a chip to get better. “Hanifin is at $5 million. This is one area where they can potentially go to a cheaper guy and spend money elsewhere,” suggested one NHL source.

19. Brandon Carlo, Boston Bruins: This is admittedly a bit of a longshot. He’s 23 years old and a right-shot top-four defenseman. Those players are at a premium. The Bruins are getting calls on him but aren’t actively looking to move him. If he gets traded, it’s part of a major deal that brings a legitimate top-six forward back or a similarly talented (and aged) left-shot defenseman. Those aren’t easy deals to make. “I’d be shocked (if they traded Carlo),” said a rival executive. “They’re going to be fascinating to watch. They’re going for it for one more year and they’re going to take some aggressive risks.” Even though they’d like to bring him back at the right price, the Bruins would also listen to offers for Torey Krug’s negotiating rights.

20. James Reimer, Carolina Hurricanes: The belief is that the Hurricanes are going to move one of their goalies this offseason and Reimer is an interesting option because his actual salary is just $850,000 next year, as colleague Pierre LeBrun reported on Insider Trading. That may explain the strong interest in Reimer so far from GMs looking for help in goal.

21. Justin Faulk, St. Louis Blues: If the Blues are going to sign Alex Pietrangelo, they’re going to have to move some salary to make it happen. So this is more of a placeholder for that move. Trading Faulk would make sense as a solution, but his contract makes him tough to move. Same for Tyler Bozak. The prize would be Colton Parayko and if the Blues are desperate to clear money, they may have to listen on Parayko.

22. Andreas Athanasiou, Edmonton Oilers: GM Ken Holland liked Athanasiou enough to trade for him at the deadline, despite being very familiar with both his flaws and plusses. But his coach played him sparingly, which makes the $3 million qualifying offer on Athanasiou a bit rich. The problem here is that other teams know this so they might prefer to see if the Oilers decline to qualify him and pursue him as an unrestricted free agent instead.

2020 NFL Trade Deadline Tracker: Kwon Alexander sent to Saints, Desmond King goes to Titans

The 2020 NFL trade deadline (Tuesday, Nov. 3) is almost here. The league has already seen a few trade offers accepted, but more are on the horizon. CBS Sports is tracking all of the news and rumors and providing a one-stop shop for readers. The most recent updates are at the top.

Chargers send DB Desmond King to Titans

Los Angeles is sending Pro Bowl defensive back/kick returner Desmond King to the Titans in exchange for a sixth-round pick, according to NFL Media and ESPN. King, who is in the final year of his deal, has recorded 24 tackles and one sack in six games this season.

Saints acquire former Pro Bowler Kwon Alexander from 49ers

The New Orleans Saints are sending a conditional fifth-round pick and linebacker Kiko Alonso to San Francisco in exchange for Alexander, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The two teams play each other in Week 10. The Saints are attempting to win at all costs, while 49ers general manager John Lynch was eager to get a big contract off the books.

These two teams are still in the hunt for their respective divisions.

CBS Sports insider Jason La Canfora notes that Marvin Jones is the receiver that has been made available by Detroit but questions if Golladay might also be had at the right price.

“Things have been tense between him and the organization for quite some time; he’s been brooding over not getting a new deal, and that came to a head on Saturday when I’m told he was not at the facility when he should have been,” La Canfora wrote.

Golladay, 26, is in the final year of his rookie contract. He has recorded 20 receptions for 338 yards and two touchdowns while missing two games with an injury.

Reserve linebacker Robert Spillane has played well post-injury to Bush but Pittsburgh has seen a past without solid linebacker play and it was not pretty. They bolstered their Super Bowl contending roster in the form of veteran LB Avery Williamson. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday night that the AFC team acquired Williamson and a 2020 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2020 fifth-round pick. Williamson goes from the NFL‘s lone win-less team to the lone undefeated team; a reversal of fortunes overnight.

Williamson has 59 tackles and one interception this season.

Saints steadfast in claim that Michael Thomas is unavailable

The potential availability of New Orleans wide receiver Michael Thomas is a rumor that has gained steam in recent weeks for whatever reason. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport says that the team has no intention of moving the star wide receiver despite punching a teammate in practice leading up to a Week 5 contest against Chargers.

A trade of Thomas would leave New Orleans with a dead cap hit of $27 million in 2020. The number dips down to $14 million following the 2022 season.

Bengals’ Carlos Dunlap sent to Seattle

The Seahawks acquired disgruntled edge rusher Carlos Dunlap from Cincinnati Wednesday in exchange for offensive lineman B.J. Finney and a 2021 seventh-round draft pick, according to SI.com’s Albert Breer. Dunlap has vocalized his unhappiness by posting the team’s defensive rotations and promoting the sale of his home on Twitter and more. Dunlap has 18 tackles, one sack and two pass deflections this season.

The Bengals may not be done at the deadline. There are a few other veterans that could be on the move. There is more on that story below. ESPN’s Adam Caplan also notes that the Seahawks may not be done acquiring pass rush help.

Ten trades that can aid contenders in a Super Bowl run

CBS Sports’ Patrik Walker mocked up ten trades that could help contenders make a Super Bowl run. Is it possible that the Patriots could be buyers and sellers ahead of the Nov. 3 deadline? Walker has the Patriots moving a big-time player while also adding a brand name wide receiver.

Not every team is a contender though and the deadline could still be interesting for lower-tier teams. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin explored one trade that each team should make in the coming days.

Everson Griffen dealt to Lions in exchange for pick

It did not take long for Dallas to find a viable suitor for edge rusher Everson Griffen. On Tuesday, it was learned that Detroit was acquiring the former Viking in exchange for a conditional 2021 sixth-round draft pick. He is due to receive roughly half of his $6 million salary from the Lions. League COVID-19 protocols prevent Griffen from playing this weekend so his first action with his new team will come Nov. 8 against … Minnesota.

Miami has turned the keys to the castle over to rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa but that does not mean the AFC East contender is prepared to give up on their season nor recently demoted second string quarterback. Head coach Brian Flores states that the team has no intention of trading Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The veteran led the Dolphins to a 3-3 record and second place within the division.

The CBS Sports team has been compiling needs for multiple teams across the NFL. Rather than reading a generic list of players available, indulge in a more team-centric approach:

Players that could be available at the deadline

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin constructed a position-by-position list of 75 players that could be on the move ahead of the Nov. 3 trade deadline. Some of the notable names include Saints quarterback Jameis Winston, Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green, Texans edge rusher J.J. Watt and Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Cowboys make DE Everson Griffen, DT Dontari Poe available

CBS Sports’ Patrik Walker confirmed that Griffen and Poe have been made available to other teams in a potential trade scenario. Griffen signed a one-year, $6 million deal with Dallas prior to the season and would be owed roughly half. CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan notes that the 32-year-old has played 56.43% of Dallas’ defensive snaps and totaled 20 tackles, six quarterback hits, and 2.5 sacks. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin laid out five potential destinations for Griffen with Seattle being the most likely.

Poe signed a two-year deal worth $8.5 million, but there is a reasonable out in the contract after this season. It is less likely that he is moved at the deadline.

Ten trades that should happen before the Nov. 3 deadline

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin proposed ten trades that would be win-win situations for both teams involved. What would A.J. Green look like on the Packers? It may not cost as much as you might think. Read the explanation behind that trade:

“At this point, why shouldn’t Green Bay take a swing, even if it eventually means losing Green in 2021 free agency and hoping for a compensatory pick? Aaron Rodgers has done very well operating with just Davante Adams and/or Allen Lazard, but with the latter hurt and No. 12 clearly positioned to take the Packers on another run, he deserves the gamble,” Benjamin wrote.

Romeo Crennel attempts to assure Texans they won’t be traded

The Texans are off to an unexpected 1-6 start to the season. Bill O’Brien has been fired in favor of veteran coach Romeo Crennel. Crennel, who likely has little authority over personnel decisions as an interim head coach, attempted to reassure his players that they will not be traded.

“So, with this situation the way it is, I think that it might be more on their mind this year than it would be any other year. I’ve talked to them and tried to reassure them that I’m not looking to trade guys, but human nature is human nature.”

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora believes it is time for a fire sale in Houston. The team has struggled with the likes of edge rusher Whitney Mercilus, J.J. Watt and others. If the team is going to be bad anyway, they might as well re-coup some of the picks flushed down the drain by O’Brien.

Bengals DE Carlos Dunlap attempts to sell house on Twitter

There has been no mincing of words in regard to Dunlap’s frustration. He has posted the team’s edge rush rotations on social media and is now attempting to sell his house on Twitter. The message is clear: trade me. CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr wrote about the veteran’s frustration upon being demoted.

In addition to Dunlap, defensive tackle Geno Atkins, wide receiver A.J. Green, wide receiver John Ross and cornerback William Jackson could also be on the move. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin explored potential destinations for each of the disgruntled AFC North talents. The Bills were a staple.

Atlanta has already pressed the reset button on their leadership structure with head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff being shown the door. The mindset will not trickle down to the players, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who notes that the team has no intention of trading Ryan or Jones.

The Falcons have gone 25-30 since that fateful 28-3 collapse against the Patriots in Super Bowl LI.

Patriots searching for receiver help again

New England drafted N’Keal Harry in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft and traded a second round pick for Mohamed Sanu. Neither has been the answer that the team had hoped. The Patriots are still alive within the AFC East but the outlook grows more bleak with each passing week. The team’s upcoming game against Buffalo could determine whether they are buyers or sellers by Nov. 3. As it stands, Bill Belichick is exploring options on the wide receiver trade market, according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora. Two of the team’s top five receptions leaders are running backs. Draft tight ends Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene have a combined one reception.

Texans expected to trade at least one receiver, other veterans

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora has reported that the Texans are a popular team in trade conversations. The organization’s sluggish start and obvious eyes to the future have potential playoff contenders scouring their roster. La Canfora states rival executives believe Houston will trade at least one receiver, Will Fuller, Brandin Cooks and Kenny Stills, by the deadline. They are also gauging the market on edge rusher Whitney Mercilus, who has three years left on a four-year, $54 million deal signed in May of 2015.

Running back Duke Johnson and tight end Darren Fells are other names that have drawn consideration.

Vikings looking to shed cap space, rival GMs aren’t eager

Minnesota has made a series of poor salary cap decisions leading up to the ultimate errors: re-signing Anthony Barr after he attempted to leave for New York and doubling down on Kirk Cousins. Now, they find themselves in a position to discard players because their season has not gone as expected and they are up against the salary cap wall.

The team has already traded edge rusher Yannick Ngakoue but more moves could be on the way. CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora had the following to say about the team’s activity: “Multiple executives who have been in contact with the Vikings believe the team is eager to move several more high-priced veterans who likely do not fit into the team’s long-term plans.”

The names most often mentioned are safety Harrison Smith, left tackle Riley Reiff, safety Anthony Harris, tight end Kyle Rudolph and wide receiver Adam Thielen.

Bengals more engaged in trade talks than the previous year

Defensive tackle Geno Atkins, cornerback William Jackson, wide receiver A.J. Green, wide receiver John Ross and edge rusher Carlos Dunlap have all made it clear that they are open to a change of scenery, according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora. The Bengals were very unwilling to trade veterans last season — an absolute mistake, says the writer continually beating a dead horse — but La Canfora notes that NFL executives are “detecting a vibe that is not quite as trade-averse” in Cincinnati.

Giants trade Markus Golden to Arizona in exchange for draft pick

On Oct. 23, the Giants agreed to trade outside linebacker Markus Golden to the Cardinals in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round pick. Golden, who actually began his career in Arizona, had just 1.5 sacks in seven games with the Giants this season. It was a priority to bolster the pass rush following the loss of Chandler Jones for the season.

Philadelphia and Julie Ertz’s husband have been at odds over his contract for some time. The matters were only exacerbated by new deals for Travis Kelce and George Kittle this offseason. Ertz was recently placed on injured reserve, which means that he can not be traded. SI’s Albert Breer reported that the team attempted to trade the player before placing him on said IR. Prior to the injury, he had recorded 24 receptions for 178 yards and one touchdown.

Breer added that wide receiver Alshon Jeffery is also on the trade block, but it is difficult to fathom anyone would want to take on that contract in relation to his limited production.

Minnesota trades Yannick Ngakoue to Baltimore for draft picks

Less than two months after acquiring the pass rusher from Jacksonville, Minnesota shipped Yannick Ngakoue to the east coast in exchange for a package of draft picks less than they initially traded to the Jaguars. The Maryland native, who has recorded five sacks this season, is headed home in exchange for a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional 2022 fifth-round pick.

Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta hinted that the Ravens may not be done making moves. The acquisition of Ngakoue is clearly a move to slow down Patrick Mahomes, who is sometimes flustered by heavy pass rush, and the Chiefs offense. CBS Sports’ Patrik Walker graded the trade acknowledging that Baltimore fleeced their trade partner.

New York traded Willis and a 2021 seventh-round pick to the 49ers in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round pick. The capital gain is marginal at best but general manager Joe Douglas is cleaning house in the Big Apple. I explored some of the other Jets players that could find interest in their services at the trade deadline.

New York trades Steve McLendon to Tampa Bay

The Jets sent the defensive tackle and a 2023 seventh-round pick to the Buccaneers in exchange for a 2022 sixth-round pick. Tampa Bay had recently lost Vita Vea to an injury for the season.

It was later revealed that McLendon played for the Jets after finding out about his trade to the Buccaneers. A car was waiting for him after the game and he immediately drove to Tampa.

Headed west to Alaska

Alaska Traveler 55

I started writing about our first adventure in Old Harbor, Alaska in 2016 when my husband took a teaching job in the native Alutiiq village off the road system on Kodiak Island. Fast forward to 2020. We spent two years in Old Harbor, back in Minneapolis for two years and decided to return to Alaska in search of a less complicated life in a small community surrounded by nature. I sit here this morning a bit more than a week after our arrival, looking out at the ocean from my new digs. We are about a block from the ocean and I can see a spruce covered island a little ways out and the occasional fishing boat passing by in the drizzling rain.

The journey to get here has been complicated by a pandemic, truck issues, and the uncertainty of what this new place would be like. As we did in our last adventure, we moved sight unseen to a house save a few grainy photos, knowing that this time, our place would be unfurnished.

So here we go again, this time at 55, I’m starting in a new community, a new house and some new adventures worth sharing.

8/2/2020

Today starts our journey back to Alaska. We are moving to a new village on Annette Island in Southeast Alaska, to Metlakatla, the only Native Alaskan reservation in Alaska. It has not been easy to figure out how to navigate such a move during a pandemic, added to this our daughter’s own battle with Covid-19 in June and July.

Our original plan was to drive our truck to Bellingham, WA to catch the 30 hour ferry to Ketchikan, and then a second 45 minute ferry to Metlakatla. The Corona virus, however, had other plans. We found out in order to get on the ferry we would have to have a negative Covid test within 72 hours of our departure. This meant finding a location in Montana or Washington with a quick result turn around time. After numerous searches and calls, it turned out that Montana’s asymptomatic test results were taking 30 days so they decided to stop testing. We purchased an approved mail-in self-administered test for $100 each but their results are back in a minimum of 4-5 days. This meant the ferry was just not an option for us.

A week from departure, we booked a barge from Seattle for the truck, flights for us from Seattle to Ketchikan and shuffled hotel bookings. We also had to re-think packing as all the items on the truck would not arrive until up to a week after we arrive in the village. We’d be under day quarantine and couldn’t shop at the grocery. I put dishwasher soap in my boots, a couple of rolls of toilet paper and sheets in my suitcase.

We traveled to Bismarck, North Dakota today, wearing masks at each rest stop and washing hands frequently. All people were wearing masks in Minnesota, and that changed as we crossed over the North Dakota line. Our hotel doesn’t seem to have many guests, but some were not wearing masks. We walked nearly a mile to get Mexican food and ate it back at our hotel. The restaurant had inside seating and while staff were wearing masks, the patrons were not.

8/3/2020

This morning we got up and carefully prepared our self-administered Covid-19 test. This required correctly labeling, collecting the nasal specimen and finding a UPS dropbox on our way out of town. We stopped at a co-op near our hotel with a great selection of items for our tailgate breakfast of coconut yogurt, blueberries and granola. One thing that the Broadband employee in Metlakatla requested when I called to set up our service, was some large Ball jar lids. Each year, families can up to a case of fish and this year the lids that normally go for $3.50 a dozen, are $12 on Amazon. I’ve checked several Menard’s in search of lids, including today in Bismarck. There were only empty shelves both here and in Minneapolis.

The drive was rather similar to our eastern North Dakota landscape until we reached the Badlands with pastel sedimentary rock outcroppings. We passed Hebron that boasted the Historic Ft. Sauerkraut and a large cutout of a baby, dinosaur and buffalo fossils. Upon entering Montana, we had to stop and have the canoe inspected, ensuring we wouldn’t be bringing in unwanted marine life. The rest stops were farther apart, and at gas stations, we noticed that not only were people NOT wearing masks, they were looking at us FOR wearing masks.

8/4/2020

No trip is complete without some sort of car trouble. Last night when Mike tried to move the car, it was dead. Maybe we left the lights on, or need a new battery. It could be the alternator at worst. A massive rain descended on the Radisson parking lot and we decided to wait until morning to figure it out. That makes for less than ideal sleep, and there was a fair amount of tossing and turning. In the morning Mike went to the battery store and got and installed the new battery with less than optimal tools. Of course the ones he needed were somewhere toward the back of the truck. We re-tied down the canoe and started off. The battery light came on again, and as a precaution, we decided to stop in at an auto repair shop to see if they might be able to tighten down the battery. A wisened mechanic with a long beard came out and checked our connection after untying the canoe. Turns out the worst case scenario-the alternator. He held up four fingers when Mike asked is he’d be able to fix it today: $400. Now we are sitting on a bench outside the shop on a busy road, watching all the other trucks go by and glad that we built in a cushion and a short trip today. The truck just pulled up finished in less than an hour and 15 minutes.

Back on the road, this our short day, hoping to get into Missoula early enough to find some dinner. Those plans were derailed as we rolled into Butte as our gauges stopped working. We pulled into the Thriftway gas station and our battery was dead…again. I called AAA and they said they would send out a truck by 5:00pm and tow us to their shop in Helena (an hour and a half away.) We knew we wouldn’t get to Missoula with this scenario and opted to call around and see if we could find another shop since it was almost closing time. Mike found a shop half a block away and they came and towed the truck back to their station. The AAA tow truck pulled up just as our truck was loaded onto the other tow truck.

Turns out our first replacement battery was bad and it fried the new alternator. We had to get a new battery and alternator and there were calls to the previous repair shop crediting us with the alternator, but still we had to pay for a new battery and the installation. The mechanics were helpful and stayed late to get our car back on the road by 6:30pm. We had 125 miles to travel to get to Missoula…back on the road again.

8/5/2020

Excited to have our truck fixed and get on our way to Washington state, we checked the oil, transmission fluid, battery connections and retied the canoe. Today we’d be doing our major shopping in Spokane, getting dry goods to load the truck as things are so much cheaper in the Lower 48. Mike turned the key to start the truck and the familiar sound of the past two days-click-click-click signaled that our battery was dead. Untie the canoe, jump the battery, and head for the nearest service station. We knew the drill. We stopped by 2 stations before someone was able to assist. The battery we got in Missoula was also a dud. This means we had to purchase battery #3 in less than 24 hours. This time no cheap battery, AC Delco all the way. ARGH!! We were able to return battery #1 for a refund, before heading out and hoping that this would be our last time at a service station.

We made our way through Idaho and stopped in Coeur d’Alene for gas and lunch. The main shopping and restaurant strip was filled with people, not wearing masks. We opted to eat our own food at an empty rest stop instead. We did get to Costco in Spokane and shopped in a busy store with the temperature at 93 degrees. We threw our stuff in the back of an almost full truck and drove to Ellensburg, about 100 miles from Seattle.

8/6/2020

After a night of re-shuffling our stuff and getting the truck re-packed for it’s barge journey, we drove through the misty rain to Seattle, stopping at Safeway for more last minute provisions, and a bit of gas. To go on the barge, the tank had to be less than a quarter tank, so we guessed how much we’d need before leaving it at Samson Tug and Barge. We also stopped at the Asian Grocery to load up on sauces, oils, noodles and other items (cases of beer) we’d likely not find in Metlakatla.

Samson Tug inspected the truck and we made sure everything we needed for the next week was in our suitcase, then the barge service called a taxi and gave us a voucher for the trip to the Seattle airport. The airport was not busy and we didn’t have to wait in line for baggage drop or security. Most people were wearing masks in the terminal, but not all. Our flight was uneventful and we arrived in Ketchikan, picked up our bags and waited in line to show the negative Covid test results from our mail-in test that had arrived the night before. This gave us the “golden ticket” or in this case, the orange ticket that said we had had a negative test. The airstrip in Ketchikan is on Gravina Island and there is a 5 minute ferry ride to get to the town.

Most people had to test in the parking lot on the Ketchikan side if they weren’t able to produce a negative test within 72 hours. We found the shuttle to our hotel and were happy to be closer to our new home.

8/7/2020

One more day to secure provisions before heading out on the ferry to our final destination. The shuttle took us to the grocery and furniture store, and our driver was from Metlakatla. We loaded up on meat, veggies and other perishables which we put in the large soft-sided Polar cooler that my brother gave us. It kept everything frozen and cold for the rest of the day. Back at the hotel while getting ready to leave, we saw US Senator Lisa Murkowski and spoke to her and had our picture taken by her brother. She is a Republican Senator, but has been put on President Trump’s bad list and Mike thanked her for her independent voice.

All our groceries and luggage are loaded into the shuttle and we go across the street from the hotel to get onto the ferry. We have a cart to schlep everything down a long gang-plank and onto shelves in the ferry bow. The cars are loaded on and we spend the next 45 minutes on calm waters navigating through the channel of islands until we reach Metlakatla. We dock and unload our stuff, get told to quarantine for 14 days and hitch a ride with the school superintendent. The ride from the ferry dock to town takes about 20 minutes. The previous dock was close to town but required an hour and a half to get there. Ferry services run twice a day so technically you can go into town and return in the same day. Fare is $58 roundtrip per person.

We are dropped off at the new turquoise, 4 bedroom home we’ll be living in. More next week about our first week in Metlakatla.
