#Critical Role #CR3 #CR3-49 #CR Ashton #Ashton my beloved #Taliesin Jaffe brings yet another character I vibe so goddamn hard with #man plays the constantly-curbed-at-the-last-second anger in his character voice so well I love it #and this may be the actor leaking through but Ashton has this reason to them that feels like it's been eaten away at by their emotions #like they've gotten so used to being dismissed they don't try to separate the two and persuade people #who aren't already used to them and their usual speech patterns #because that's not something they've ever really been able to get to work #so you get this character who by his stats and his description is not a talker #but who drops arguments like this that feel emotionally raw but not spur-of-the-moment. #it's occurring to me that Ashton's speech can be described in a way that matches their aesthetic #it's a jagged pointy crystal that would have needed time to build up to the size it is and it has not been polished or cleaned up #like at all #The impression I get is that Ashton thinks about things a lot more than they say them and their speech mirrors their overarching theme #kind of as a result of that #like sure *maybe* that's Taliesin being too erudite but it fits the theme anyway

Was rewatching bits and bobs of the last episode (again) and thinking about Ashton in that conversation with Laudna and how I think it shows that more than just being afraid of caring,  they're afraid of being understood.

There’s this thing that happens sometimes when you’re lonely and in pain and closed off where you start to come up for reasons why your pain is unique. It’s not like, a morally bad thing, but it is a trick you can play on yourself, thinking that since no one has all your exact same experiences, there’s no way anyone can get you. It’s a way of giving more meaning to your loneliness, you know? It’s special. And it’s another layer of crunchy shell to protect yourself - if you think it’s not possible for people to understand you, it hurts less to not be understood. Ostensibly. Which means accepting that your trauma, and what you know as a result of it, isn’t wholly inscrutable to others, means letting another layer of your guard down. Of acknowledging that hey, that loneliness and jealousy and hurt don’t have to be the way you live. You can be understood if you let people in. You just have to be vulnerable. Isn’t that terrifying?

Their speech here is riddled with caveats. They’re the only one who knows what it's like to not have a past - well, except for one (FCG). They know the truth of people none of the others do - well, except for one (and I think this means Imogen, since she hears the worst of peoples’ thoughts). They know loneliness none of them know - except you know things Laudna, too, don’t think they don’t know that. I’m not surprised he was having arguments with people who weren’t there at the end of the episode - even as he made his speech, he was letting a bit of argument with himself seep in.

What’s worse, each of those people have dealt with that shared understanding in a different way than Ashton.  FCG doesn’t know their past, but that drives them to look for purpose, rather than a low impact life. Imogen has seen into peoples’ heads and knows the worst of them, but she still thinks “good people” exist, enough to be fretting over it constantly (don’t think I didn’t notice that that’s the first things that sets Ashton off, her asking if the gods are good “There’s no such thing, everyone is fuckign selfish-”). And Laudna has known a kind of loneliness that is truly unfathomable - but she’s secure now in the comfort and knowledge that she has her people. Which means that Ashton could start looking at their own shit in different ways. They could make a choice to let people in or see the good in ways they haven’t, and that’s some scary ass shit. I think there’s been a bit of a panicky, manic edge to the kindnesses Ashton has been displaying since they got Laudna back. I think they’re white knuckling their way through caring about the Hells and they are freaked the fuck OUT.

So I think Ashton was being an asshole by telling Laudna she didn’t know loneliness. I think even as he half-believed it as a holdover from that “I am wholly unique and uniquely alone” coping mechanism, he knew it was an absurd thing to say. But I think they did it on purpose. I think they are so terrified by how much they care about the Hells, and what’s more how much they understand and can be understood by them, that they wanted to push her into not caring by writing them off as a jerk. But Laudna’s more emotionally savvy than that. She won’t let him get away with it, even as she gets rightly angry at his downplaying her own experience in the moment. She knows they care, and she’s not going to let them push that away. They’re just going to have to deal with the fact that they’re a softy underneath it all. They’ve been given possibly the last push they need.

I would be 0% surprised if they finish arguing with themself about this by the next episode and their lil project Tal mentioned ends up being like. Fucking. Matching team patches for the Hells. Because they are all in now.

on the one hand, i understand why the mission of the ruby vanguard might be appealing to liliana and others like her

you live in a world where the gods have literally been proven to exist, even if they are physically removed from you. there are people wandering around that regularly communicate with the gods, whose faith is rewarded with powers beyond comprehension

but your life is shit. your life is confusing, and painful, and terrifying, and the gods have never done anything meaningful for you (although they've never done anything meaningful against you, either). maybe you once prayed, maybe you never prayed to begin with. faith in these particular gods has never rewarded you, no matter if it's helped someone else, so maybe they were useless to begin with. maybe if you got rid of each and every one of them, your life wouldn't be as miserable as it always has been.

on the other hand, y'know, everything else related to being an audience member and knowing things that no one else in exandria would rightfully know

The first time FCG cast Turn Undead (I think every this campaign), they didn't know it would effect Laudna, and they apologized after, and Laudna said "it's good". People collectively decided that he didn't acknowledge her, because this fandom loves ignoring canon for the sake of cheap angst. (Episode 69, timestamp 3:49:20)

The second time they cast it, they didn't acknowledge her after, and that was a dick move, but people immediately divorced it from all context, namely that they got crit the round prior, were down a lot of HP, and were surrounded by undead enemies who were actively killing him. Not being entirely polite and deferential to Laudna in that situation is entirely reasonable and understandable if you are not utterly incapable of empathizing with them.

The third time, and this is the one that REALLY gets me, the third time, HE LITERALLY ASKED IF HE SHOULD CAST TURN UNDEAD AND LAUDNA TELLS HIM TO DO IT. I am grabbing you by the shoulders and shaking you until your head pops off and rolls under the couch. LAUDNA TOLD THEM TO CAST IT. #not tagging this because i dunno #i feel like people are really attached to this one and i don't wanna fight #i think people blow this shit way out of proportion #and i just don't think at this point Laudna feels as hurt by turn undead as people want her to feel #she let FCG come into her dreams immediately after the undead pirate fight #which is the incident where FCG actually did something uncool (not apologizing after) #unlike the other two where they did absolutely nothing wrong #she didn't have to let them do that if she felt any sort of mistrust or resentment #and she didn't seem to feel that! #she hasn't really done anything with the whole 'the gods hate me' thing after the one time she said it in canon #maybe because she immediately parlayed with an undead pirate whose godly patron turned him undead because he wanted to be undead #that mighta been a little 'oh i guess at least one good is cool with the undead' #or Marisha just decided to drop that thread #i dunno #it happens #i think it's not gonna be a point of contention between them #i just think people want stuff out of this that they're maybe not gonna get #and it's making them warp reality a little #pretend that shit didn't happen like it actually did #that Laudna literally actually told FCG to cast it that one time and everyone immediately decided that NO he did it TO HER AGAINST HER WILL #hate it.
