Fiindca eu asa imi imaginam. Mai in gluma mai in serios, ca un fost expat ce sunt, am crezut initial ca faimosul Caru’ cu Bere este un fel de carciuma. Pai d-aia se numeste asa, nu? Se…

Caru' cu bere
After dreaming about visiting Romania for ages, I did my homework on the top restaurants, and Caru' cu bere totally nailed it. The place is just something else with those grand arched ceilings and cozy romantic vibes. No wonder it's up there as one of the best spots. I made sure to book a table the night before because there's always a line of folks dying to get in.
I went all out and ordered this huge pork knuckle, even though the waiter warned me it was meant for two. Thought I could handle it all by myself, but guess what? I've got lunch and dinner sorted for tomorrow too! The food is spot on, the service is top-notch, and the whole vibe takes you back in time—it's got that old-world charm. I'm super thrilled I got to experience such an amazing place.

Bucharest Day 2
Today was our first full day in Bucharest. Cathie walked around with me for a bit this morning, but she was still tired from the flights and not feeling like doing much.
We stopped at the small Saint Demetrius church just down the street from the hotel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we walked around a bit more and at that point Cathis was tired and we headed back to the hotel.
I went back out and walked some more. My primary destination was Cărturești Carusel, a famous bookstore. The building was originally built by a banking family. After WWII the communist government confiscated the building and turned it into a hardware store then abandoned it and left the building empty for years. After the communist government fell the grandson of the founders fought for 20 years before getting the building returned. He remodelled it and opened the bookstore.
It's a beautiful store.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It also has a good selection of English language books, so I bought a couple. (I had already finished 2 books since leaving home.
I walked around some more. There are a lot of fabulous older buildings here. Before WWII Bucharest was known as the Paris of Eastern Europe. But the communist government changed that. They didn't maintain the older buildings, instead building huge, expensive government buildings.
The most noted of these is the Parliamentary Palace. This huge building is almost 4,000,000 sq. ft. It's one of the heaviest buildings in the world; probably due to the lavish use of marble. But eveno today 70% of the interior is incomplete and unused.
Tumblr media
For dinner, we went to Caru' cu bere, a famous traditional restaurant.
The interior is really fantastic, and it would make a wonderful bee hall, but the food was a major disappointment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We had a bean dish for a starter, a bowl of boiled and mashed white beans; exceedingly dull.
The main courses are all traditional, meaning meat-heavy. We had a homestyle meal, braised pork chunks, sausage, congealed polenta, and boiled cabbage. The fact that the boiled cabbage was the highlight of the meal says it all. It was heavy, solid, dull food.
Luckily the area around the hotel has restaurants from all over, most of them offering food more interesting than traditional Romanian.
But the sky outside was beautiful, and we'd done our duty for traditional food.

Restaurant Caru' cu Bere | Peste 140 de Ani de Istorie‎
~ 1879 🥂 dükkan epey eskilerden günümüze geliyor; isminin anlamı ‘the beer wagon’.

Stavropoleos Monastery Church Bucharest Romania
Stavropoleos Monastery Church Bucharest Romania
Stavropoleos Monastery Church Bucharest The weather has been perfect for exploring, so yesterday I enjoyed rambling around backstreets. Bucharest is unique, in that some of its most extraordinary attractions are almost hidden away next to deteriorating or abandoned buildings, potentially going unnoticed. The maze of narrow cobblestone lanes in Old Town and the Lipscani District are like this. The…

Waking up earlier than the previous day, I made my way to the Old Town for breakfast. I found a cafe and ordered a Full English. One of my frustrations with Romania is that the food takes so long to come, and then when it arrives, it’s usually cold. This restaurant was a slight exception. Overall, in my opinion the food isn’t amazing in Bucharest.
I hiked north up Calea Victoriei admiring more grandiose buildings on my way. Eventually I arrived at Arcul de Triumf, a memorial similar in appearance to the one in Paris. This one was built to commemorate the fallen of WW2.
Like the one in Paris, this one is built on a roundabout. However unlike Paris, there isn’t an underpass meaning that you have to cross a busy intersection. The crossing took at least 5 minutes.
I arrived at Parcul Regele Mihai I. This great park had a lake and a Japanese Garden amongst other attractions. An added bonus was that some of the cherry blossoms were still in bloom.
I made my way back down the Calea Victoriei and stopped at the National Geology museum followed by the Museum of Natural History. This place was chaos, it was full of kids screaming with their parents rushing to take photos of the exhibitions. Nevertheless, it was a good museum.
My next stop was the National Museum of Romanian History. This was an interesting museum and educated me as to why Romanian, like Italian and French is a romantic language. It’s because Romania was under the Roman Empire for many years of course. It explains where the country gets its name and why the people seem are similar to Italians in their appearance and mannerisms.
In the Old Town I stopped for an apple pie and coffee before being drawn to Caru’ cu Bere for dinner, which is an old beer hall. The interior was very impressive.
I went to explore what was left of the old Jewish Quarter. It once spread from Unirii eastwards. The quarter was devastated by the holocaust, emigration to Israel and then demolished in the 1980s. There are a few remaining relics such as a theatre, holocaust museum and a few synagogues. Most of it has been replaced by communist flats which are now being replaced by modern flats which look like communist flats, and there are lots and lots of car parks. The area is slowly being regenerated though and it looks like it is becoming a business centre.
I explored the Old Town at night again. Being a Sunday there wasn’t much going on and a lot of the bars were closed. I was surprised because it is a capital city. After a few beers and a Gyros from a Greek restaurant I made my way back, this time without falling over.
