KIPCHOGE UNSURE WHY HIS LEG GAVE OUT IN BOSTON
In Tom Derderian’s magisterial book, the Boston Marathon: The History of the World’s Premier Running Event, he describes the 1990 Boston Marathon thusly. When 1988 Olympic marathon champion Gelindo Bordin’s coach, Luciano Gigliotti, saw the African runners’ tactics in Boston, he said that they were “funny guys, crazy guys”. It was just not possible to run like that. He called the pace…

There’s the Mount Rushmore that everyone knows about in South Dakota, but if you watch sports talk shows, a popular topic these days is to ask the talking heads for their Mount Rushmore of the four best in a particular area of sports. It might be teams, or players at a specific position, or it might be coaches.
It’s an interesting discussion most of the time because choosing the four best in any field can be somewhat daunting. We don’t do sports here, but I thought it might be interesting to apply the Mount Rushmore discussion to music. So, what I’ve done below is choose those I think belong on a Mount Rushmore of Performers, Songwriters, Vocalists, Guitarists, Pianists, Drummers, and Bassists. I didn’t limit myself to any genre because I listen to all kinds of music. I simply chose those artists I think most highly of; artists I listen to because they make a personal connection with me when I hear them.
In the case of songwriters, however, I broke the category down into three sections. The first is for composers – those who compose the music. The second is for lyricists – those who write the words. And the final songwriter category is for both music and lyrics. I find those who write songs for a living are often better at one thing than another. Maybe the music is wonderful, but they don’t write lyrics, or they aren’t as adept at lyrics as they are at music. Some lyricists are amazing, but many have difficulty when it comes to writing a great melody. Of course, there are some songwriters who’ve mastered both sides of the craft in mostly equal measure. So, to be fair, I made separate categories.
I claim no particular expertise here. The only musical gift I possess is a great pair of ears. But for this, that’s all I need. Rather than question my choices, you might ask, instead, who you would choose, and why. If nothing else, it will define what you value most when you listen to music. (The names are listed in no particular order.)

1828 Saturday 17 May
8 1/2 10 1/2
Breakfast about 9 1/2 or rather later - sat talking a little to Mrs. D- [Dalton] their butcher's bills have been £300 a year and £200 a year - vary very much - 11 servants, 8 women and 3 men - 1 hour or 1 1/2 hour packing - at breakfast Marianne and her nonsense calling me nanny she asked how I liked I said the name was certainly quite new to me and surprised but I was otherwise indifferent about it what a goose she is and I now rather dislike her - she told me yesterday she only painted to please her father her own happiness was to lie in bed reading a good novel - Sat a few minutes with Mr. D- [Dalton] in his study - a momentary take leave of Marianne and all the rest of the girls in her painting room - then sat with Mrs. D- [Dalton] she summed up what I said, they said in Paris I ought to buy for visiting next winter to £118 which she said would dress her for 2 years -
Left the party at 1 55/60 - IN- [Isabella Norcliffe] would see me off - we walked about - went into the church yard - off at 2 10/60 in the Telegraph (4 inside coach) for Durham - only one man inside besides myself, and he left us at Darlington, and I was alone the rest of the way - the footman took my liggage [sic] and the butler went to open me the coach door for which each got half a crown I have no intention returning to my friends at Croft or meeting them in July at Hartlepool as they wish me to do for a few days or as long as I can Marianne would teaze and not one of the rest would repay me - incurred a cross just after leaving Rushyford thinking of Pi [Mariana] -
Got to Darlington (and change horses) in 35 minutes, a nice town - neatly kept handsome looking church - a greek cross ∴ looking all of a heap - at the far end of the town, left, the 'Eldon main, Fire coal 7/6 a ton - line coal 6/8 a ton' - change horses at Rushyford, a singley-standing neat-looking splashed Inn 1/2 way between Darlington and Durham - here the road turns off westward to Bp. [Bishop] auckland which being about 10 miles from Durham may probably be about a mile from here? - flat, uninteresting drive from Croft to Rushyford, beyond this the range of limestone hill (right) begins to near a little, the country is more undulating - a little hill or 2 in the road, and patches of wood are to be seen, and the situation of Durham upon the Wear is picturesque - no sight of the city till within about a mile, descend the hill - the cathedral finely placed on a hill, and the city creeping down along its declivity at the foot of which runs the wear with a good bridge over it -
At 5 1/4 alighted at the 1/2 moon, an ale-house nearly opposite the Waterloo Inn or hotel which, the King's or Queen's head (I forget which) are called the best Inns in Durham - the former not good-enough-looking to strike me, or catch my attention in any way - sent off my luggage to another alehouse the hat and feather, close to the marketplace, and ordered my place to be taken for Sunderland (on purpose to see the bridge) at 6 -
Took a prettyish young woman with me from the Inn as guide to the cathedral - close by, the bp's [bishop's] palace built out of, and called the castle, the old tower (square with bevelled corners?) standing close to it, in the garden on grounds on a mound like Clifford's Tower, York - entrance to the palace a castle court by an old castle-gateway - fine-looking cathedral - plain exterior - 2 lowish-looking west towers and latern tower high above its neighbours - the present cathedral, said the woman who shewed it, built about 900 years ago - the 2 doors under the 2 west towers instead of opening outward, open into what is called St. Mary's Chapel, said to be part of the old, original church - a very fine specimen of 3 aisles of circular arches all the groinings of which finished in dog-tooth - here stands a large table tomb, the stone quite plain, said to be the tomb of 'St. Bede - this chapel is just fitted up with reading desk etc. for evening lectures - the deal of the benches, etc., not yet painted - only just done - last week - circular arches along the nave, chancel, and transepts - the most striking thing, all the pairs of columns dissimilar - 1 pair fluted straight - 2 or 3 pairs fluted in different patterns - spirally, and chequered - very odd effect - never saw anything like it before -
Tumblr media
Very odd columns in the Durham Cathedral (Image Source)
Pavement of the nave not good - north door into the nave very bad - cloisters perfect - in - very good repair - behind the altar is the shrine of St. Cuthbert and behind this what they call the nine altars, a spacious chapel which, with its large middle window and 2 side windows finished outside in 3 gables? with 2 turret somehow at each outside gable, forms a singular sort of looking attachment to the main building as one looks at from without - the large stone covering St. Cuthbert's bones just behind the altar was removed the other day - the bones taken up, put into a common deal coffin, and reinterred in the same place as before - no fine monuments - 2 or 3 old ones of the lords Neville, killed in battle against the Scots - the woman said the singing was excellent and the organ one of the finest in England, much finer than that in York -
Dr. Prossers a good looking gothic house - the other building round the close (my guide called it the college) making no great appearance - the close like a long quadrangular court, too confined - the city (brick built) all up hill and down - saw not one good street - small poorish market place (market day) the most striking object in it, the pump, the well being covered over with a little massy round-topped building surmounted by a huge figure of Neptune with his trident-
At 6 5/60 took my seat by the old coachman (tho' I had my place inside) and left the inside to the market people such a coach, such tackling, and 4 such horses I never before saw in England - I wondered how and when we should get to Sunderland - said the coachman 'all where we are going is underminded' - strong symptoms of a coal country - rail-ways raised on the black shale, and here and there the smoke of an engine to be descried - Houghton-le-spring 1/2 way between Durham and Sunderland - a niceish good village - no 'squire - only the rector who has a low but handsome 2 storied gothic house approached by a handsome castle-like gateway - very good-looking church - the people talked of Houghton bank - It was by this, rising steeply from the village, that we crossed the great ridge of lime hill - about 2 years since they cut thro' the hill (3 or 4 hundred yards in length) the present road which is in the deepest part, they say, 15 yards deep - almost all was done by blasting - the sides perpendicular - no complaint of its being filled up with snow last winter - does not look more than 7 yards wide if so much - only just room for 2 carriages to pass comfortably - singular looking cleft as one saw it in the distance on approaching Houghton - no view of the sea till within 2 or 3 miles of Sunderland, tho' perhaps one ought to see it from the top of Houghton bank - brick or limestone buildings all the way - villages pretty good - the coachman pointed out where Wearmouth ended and Sunderland began - fine, broad, handsome long street - nothing like it in Durham -
Alighted at the George Inn at 7 10/60 - hearing that a coach would leave the Golden Lion at 8 1/2 in the morning for N.C. [Newcastle], went and took up my quarters there for the night - best Inn in Sunderland - no great appearance outside, but apparently plenty of room - got into a little sitting room by the door, with a roaring fire in it, hot as flames - tho' a little starved on entering, soon obliged to open the window - had tea immediately - not a muffin nor tea cake in the house, but not having eaten since breakfast at 9 1/2 made a hearty meal on dry toast and butter - market day, too, at Sunderland - the market held in the street, but the butchers stalls, all looked neat and well - went to my room at 9 1/2 - the chambermaid shewed me into a much smaller room than I had seen on entering said it was the undermaid the other was engaged I remonstrated said I was annoyed sent for the mistress she was out when would she up in the morning not till eleven sat up late made the woman change me into the next room which was however the same or no better than the other found the people took me for a nobody and I suspected on seeing the waiter last night and quietly resolved to make the best of it determining to save my money - Do not believe the bed was damp, but slept on my plaid and in my drawers and greatcoat - everything very clean - very fine day -
Letter this morning (about noon) from Mrs. Duffin, York, to say her nephew Matthew was elected to to Christ Church Oxford - all her father wished - read aloud to Mr. D- [Dalton] the kind messages to him and Mrs. D- [Dalton] to go to the Duffins when they want a bed in York etc. etc.
Croft to Darlington . 4 D- [Darlington] to Durham . 18 D- [Durham] to Sunderland . 13

• Surf music developed in Southern California in the early sixties growing into two major forms: instrumental and vocal and really only existed in a very tiny widow between 1961 and 1964 effectively being killed off by the British Invasion.
The vocal strain of surf developed out of doo-wop and 50s tight harmony groups such as the 4 Freshman and the 4 Preps and is best known in the work of the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean. Developing slightly later than the instrumental groups, some of the vocal surf groups were a bit more successful in translating their work into a post-British Invasion/pre-psychedelic world.
The instrumental genre grew out of late 50s instrumental material by performers like Link Wray, Duane Eddy and England’s The Shadows. Early surf pioneers such as Dick Dale and The Bel-Airs cranked up the volume and the reverb and played loud rock music that emulated the power and motion of the waves to kids who spent all day at the beach and all night partying on the sand and at beachside clubs such as the Rendezvous ballroom in Orange County.
•Ken Nordine (Strollin’ Spooks, Fliberty Jib) was an interesting post-war character crossing boundaries from commercial radio and corporate voice over work, to pop music to more avant-garde sessions with the beat poets and later, the Grateful Dead. He is probably best know for his “Word Jazz” series of recordings that paired Nordine’s, abstract, sometimes stream of consciousness, poetry with jazz musicians and percussionists in a  - perhaps in retrospect -  slightly stereotypical, beatnik coffeehouse setting. He also did film work, children records and - a trivia nite tidbit -was the vocal coach for Linda Blair for the Exorcist. Ken Nordine is still with us - but mostly retired -  at 98 years young!

Gonzaga isn’t the only team to have a perfect season and lose at the end
Tumblr media
Every team that failed to finish a perfect season in college basketball, now with Gonzaga
Gonzaga was on the brink of achieving something we haven’t seen in a long, long time: trying to become the first team in almost 50 years to win the men’s NCAA Tournament after going undefeated all season. A fairly common occurrence in the 1970s with powerhouses like UCLA and Indiana, it’s since become nearly impossible to run the table in the regular season, let alone carry it into the tourney and cut down the nets at the end.
The Bulldogs started the season at 31-0, but they lost their bid for a perfect season in the last game of the year. The Baylor Bears blew out the Zags, 86-70, in the national championship game of the 2021 men’s NCAA tournament to ensure that Bobby Knight’s 1976 Indiana team remains men’s college basketball’s most recent perfect team for another year.
Here’s a look back at all the teams who entered the NCAA tournament undefeated only to see their championship hopes fizzle when it mattered the most.
The sensational seven
Seven teams in NCAA history have played an entire regular season without losing a game, then carried it into the tournament and won the championship. This hasn’t happened since 1975-76.
1955-56 San Francisco Dons
1956-57 North Carolina Tar Heels
1963-64 UCLA Bruins
1966-67 UCLA Bruins
1971-72 UCLA Bruins
1972-73 UCLA Bruins
1975-76 Indiana Hoosiers
These obviously represent some of the greatest teams, with the greatest players of all time. Bill Russell played on the San Francisco championship team, UCLA had Lew Alcindor (known now as Kareem Abdul Jabbar) and later Bill Walton, and the Hoosiers were coached by the legendary Bobby Knight.
The men’s college basketball teams that lost their perfect seasons
The list of teams that dominated the regular season, only to falter in the NCAA tournament is far larger. A total of 12 teams in NCAA history went undefeated in the regular season, then lost in the tournament.
1950-51 Columbia Lions
1960-61 Ohio State Buckeyes
1967-68 Houston Cougars
1967-68 St. Bonaventure Bonnies
1970-71 Marquette Eagles
1970-71 Pennsylvania Quakers
1974-75 Indiana Hoosiers Star player Scott May broke his arm in the regular season finale against Purdue, and while the rest of team was good enough to prop up Indiana early in the tourney, they eventually lost to No. 5 seed Kentucky. In the regular season May scored 25 points against the Wildcats, but managed to play just two minutes in the Elite Eight.
1975-76 Rutgers Scarlet Knights A Cinderella season for Rutgers saw the Scarlet Knights go undefeated in the regular season, but still not garner enough respect to earn a top seed. Still, the team valiantly fought their way to a Final Four, before losing to Michigan.
1990-91 UNLV Rebels One of the most exciting teams in modern basketball, UNLV, anchored by Larry Johnson and Stacey Augmon ran the table in the regular season and made it to Final Four before suffering a grueling two point loss to Duke.
2013-14 Wichita State Shockers The Shockers were a No. 9 seed despite running the table in the regular season. The tournament seeding was unkind to Wichita State, who faced Kentucky in the third round, eventually losing. Headlined by Cleanthony Early and Ron Baker, it ended up being Fred VanVleet who went on to experience the most stardom in the NBA, now a staple of the Raptors.
2014-15 Kentucky Wildcats Unquestionably the most loaded team on this list, Kentucky boasted NINE players who would go on to the NBA, most notably Karl-Anthony Towns, and Devin Booker. Entering as a No. 1 seed, Kentucky survived a close scare to Notre Dame, before losing to Wisconsin in the Final Four.
2020-2021 Gonzaga Bulldogs The Zags started 31-0 but couldn’t finish the job. Baylor beat them by 16 points in the national title game.
Which brings us to Gonzaga
There was never doubt that based on talent Gonzaga had the ability to make a deep run in the tournament and possibly even win the championship. That said, there were more than a few questions about how legit their regular season run was. The WCC is a fundamentally weak conference, and the Zags’ biggest test was erased when their regular season game against Baylor was cancelled due to Covid earlier in the season.
The tournament solidified what we thought we already knew about this fantastic Gonzaga team. Drew Timme, Corey Kispert and Jalen Suggs are All-Americans. Gonzaga won its first four games in the NCAA tournament tournament by nearly 24 points per game, then won a classic in the Final Four on Suggs’ deep buzzer-beater to stun UCLA in overtime. Baylor was the biggest test the team had, and the Bears left little doubt they were the superior team.
Maybe Baylor would have been the team going for an undefeated season under different circumstances. The Bears started this season 18-0 before having to pause for three weeks because of Covid. Baylor dropped two games after the pause, but looked like a heavyweight again in March Madness.
Gonzaga had a great shot to become an undefeated national championship, but it wasn’t meant to be. Baylor was simply better.

Final Fade Tourney: Kansas vs. Kansas State Basketball Game Erupts Into All-Out Brawl
Source: Jamie Squire / Getty
An epic fight took place Tuesday night (Jan. 21) between the Kansas Jayhawks and the Kansas State Wildcats, spilling out into the crowd before cooler heads prevailed. It all happened in garbage time as the contest was winding down and sparked by a Kansas player who didn’t particularly like the fact the ball was stolen from him.
ESPN reports that the rival squads were nearing the end of their contest on Kansas’ homecourt at Allen Fieldhouse. As the Jayhawks were letting time expire on the clock by dribbling around, Kansas State player DaJuan Gordon stole the ball from Silvio De Sousa. As Gordon raced down the other end, De Sousa swatted down the shot and then stood over Gordon in a menacing fashion.
Two Kansas State players took offense to the taunting and all hell broke loose. As a result, both teams cleared their benches, including coaches and other staff and amazingly, the gameplay was halted and had to be resumed so that the Wildcats could shoot technical fouls.
Things could have been much worse, as De Sousa began brandishing a stool and held it above his head before one of the coaches took it from him. Adding to what is sure to be severe consequences for both teams, De Sousa has already been the subject of an FBI investigation after it was uncovered that the forward was given $20,000 by an adidas consultant on the suggestion of Kansas Head Coach, Bill Self.
The NCAA has not yet announced what it plans to do in response and both respective schools are launching their own investigations.

Rugby World Cup: All Blacks drop Owen Franks from squad

Rugby World Cup: All Blacks drop Owen Franks from squad
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With his move to Europe leaving him ineligible for selection, Franks’ All Blacks career could be at an end
New Zealand have surprisingly left Northampton-bound prop Owen Franks out of their 31-man Rugby World Cup squad.
Franks, 31, has won 108 caps but misses out with Atu Moli, yet to make an All Blacks start, among those preferred.
The holders have only two specialist fly-halves in their squad with Beauden Barrett and Richie Mo’unga included.
Centre Sonny Bill Williams, number eight Kieran Read and second row Sam Whitelock will attempt to win a third successive Rugby World Cup.
The trio were also part of the successful campaigns in 2011 and 2015.
Franks agreed a deal to join Northampton this summer at the end of his Crusaders contract.
However, he will now be free to start work at Franklin’s Gardens earlier than expected after his omission from head coach Steve Hansen’s final selection.
“He is one of the great All Blacks,” said Hansen.
Laumape has scored eight tries in 13 Tests – only six of which he has started
“His professionalism both on and off the field has been magnificent over the years, but unfortunately we believe the game requires us to have big mobile number ones and number threes and in this case, we just think the other guys that we’ve named are more so than he.
“Therefore we had to make a tough decision.”
Centre Ngani Laumape is also left out as Hansen keeps faith in the experienced and versatile Ryan Crotty, who is on his way back from a thumb injury.
Flanker Liam Squire, who last appeared for the All Blacks in November’s defeat by Ireland, misses out after injuries and personal problems hampered his season.
New Zealand World Cup squad
Forwards:Dane Coles, Liam Coltman, Codie Taylor, Nepo Laulala, Joe Moody, Atu Moli, Angus Ta’avao, Ofa Tuungafasi, Scott Barrett, Brodie Retallick, Patrick Tuipulotu, Sam Whitelock, Sam Cane, Luke Jacobson, Kieran Read (capt), Ardie Savea, Matt Todd.
Backs:TJ Perenara, Aaron Smith, Brad Weber, Beauden Barrett, Richie Mo’unga, Ryan Crotty, Jack Goodhue, Anton Lienert-Brown, Sonny Bill Williams, Jordie Barrett, George Bridge, Rieko Ioane, Sevu Reece, Ben Smith.

Live Rugby Championship updates: All Blacks v Springboks in Wellington
New Post has been published on https://diary.nz/live-rugby-championship-updates-all-blacks-v-springboks-in-wellington/
Live Rugby Championship updates: All Blacks v Springboks in Wellington
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All the Rugby Championship action between the All Blacks and the Springboks.
The All Blacks and Springboks coaches agree the winner of Saturday’s Rugby Championship test in Wellington will take a slight edge into the World Cup where the teams will meet again in the first round of pool play.
New Zealand coach Steve Hansen and South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus also agree the winner of the match will likely win this year’s Championship and that the tournament is only a stepping stone towards the World Cup and a rematch in Yokohama on September 21.
“In the bigger scheme of things one will always play down this test match and say the World Cup is the most important,” Erasmus said. “But in the same breath it’s a New Zealand-South Africa test match so for both teams it’s very important.
“Because we’re playing each other in the pool stage at the World Cup it spices it up. It’s going to be close and the team that wins will have a little more belief and momentum going into that pool match.”
Hansen is thinking along similar lines.
“In the big scheme of this year does the result matter?” Hansen said. “I guess it will give whoever wins it a little confidence going in to the World Cup. But I don’t think it’s going to affect the World Cup, no.”
Hansen said the All Blacks will not be on a quest for revenge after losing the same match in Wellington last year by two points to an under-rated Springboks team.
The Springboks drew confidence from that win over the world champions and have gone on since to stack up impressive results. They seem to be heading towards the World Cup on a well-defined road with a clearly understood game plan and consistent selections.
New Zealand, instead, has plunged off down various cul-de-sacs in both tactics and selection, choosing ever-larger squads comprising players who often make only one appearance before vanishing from the radar.
Erasmus has been clear-sighted in his selections. He fielded an almost second-string lineup which was still able to beat Australia 35-17 last weekend while sending several of his front-line players ahead to Wellington to acclimatize ahead of Saturday’s match.
New Zealand scraped to a 20-16 win over Argentina in Buenos Aires with a scratch lineup which featured combinations unlikely to be used in the World Cup’s knockout rounds.
The Springboks’ lineup for Saturday’s match is a stable and tested one; the All Blacks team sees the return of many front-line players including its first choice tight-five. But it still has an experimental cast.
Hansen has finally yielded to pressure to play Richie Mo’unga at first five-eighths and to move Beauden Barrett from first five-eighths to fullback. Barrett is a two-time World Rugby Player of the Year but his kicking and passing under pressure has been patchy lately and fullback may give him a better chance to unleash his attacking ability.
The New Zealand back row is experimental with captain Kieran Read filling his usual role at No 8 but Matt Todd starting in place of Sam Cane on the open side and Shannon Frizell given a chance to fill the troublesome blindside role in the absence of Liam Squire.
Sonny Bill Williams will return from a long injury break to partner Jack Goodhue in midfield in a combination unlikely to see service in the World Cup. Williams has played only rarely since the 2015 World Cup because of injuries and his form and fitness are both in question.
With only four tests to play before the World Cup kicks off, both teams need a solid performance Saturday to show their preparation is on track.

History of back-to-back Super Bowl winners
Tumblr media
Can Patrick Mahomes lead the Kansas City Chiefs to back-to-back Super Bowl victories? Tom Brady and the Buccaneers stand in the way.
The Kansas City Chiefs will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55, returning to the biggest NFL game of the year and defending their title. In 2021, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will need to defeat Tom Brady and the Bucs, who are playing in their home stadium for a chance at a title. Can the Chiefs become the latest back-to-back Super Bowl winners?
Let's take a look back at the history of repeat Super Bowl winners.
1966-67 Green Bay Packers (Super Bowls 1 & 2)
It is no coincidence that the trophy given to the NFL champion is named after Vince Lombardi, one of the league's legendary coaches and the man that led the Packers to victory in the first two Super Bowls. (Of course, back then it wasn't known as the Super Bowl, but rather the "AFL-NFL Championship Game.") Lombardi's final game as Packers coach was the victory in Super Bowl 2, ending an incredible nine-season career during which his teams won five NFL championships, including the aforementioned two Super Bowls.
1972-73 Miami Dolphins (Super Bowls 7 & 8)
The 1972 Dolphins remain the only team in NFL history to finish a season with an unbeaten record, capping off their perfect campaign with a 14-7 win over Washington in Super Bowl 7. The city of Miami wouldn't have to wait long for another championship. The Dolphins went 12-2 during the 1973 regular season and rolled through the playoffs, winning each of its three postseason games by 17 points.
1974-75 Pittsburgh Steelers (Super Bowls 9 & 10) & 1978-79 Pittsburgh Steelers (Super Bowls 13 & 14)
The 1970s Steelers are considered one of the most dominant teams in pro football history, winning four Super Bowl titles in a six-season span. With this incredible run, the franchise established itself as one of the league’s foremost dynasties — following in the footsteps of the 1940s Chicago Bears, 1950s’ Cleveland Browns, and the 1960s Packers. Buoyed by its “Steel Curtain” defense and the prolific arm of Terry Bradshaw, the Steelers won 80 games (including playoffs) from 1974-79, by far the most of any team during that span.
1988-89 San Francisco 49ers (Super Bowls 23 & 24)
An offensive juggernaut led by Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, San Francisco began its run of back-to-back titles with a narrow 20-16 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super 23. The 49ers then successfully defended their championship with a 55-10 blowout of the Denver Broncos one year later, the largest margin of victory in Super Bowl history.
1992-93 Dallas Cowboys (Super Bowls 27 & 28)
Powered by the dynamic trio of Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith, the Cowboys dismantled the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl 27 by a 52-17 score to win the franchise’s first ring since the late 1970s. Dallas suffered through the inevitable Super Bowl hangover at the start of the 1993 season, dropping its first two games, before cruising to another NFC East title and a 30-13 victory over the Bills in the big game for the second straight year.
1997-1998 Denver Broncos (Super Bowls 32 & 33)
The Broncos were the first AFC team to repeat as Super Bowl winners since the 1970s Steelers, beating the Packers for their first title and the Atlanta Falcons for their second one. John Elway capped his Hall of Fame career in storybook fashion, winning the MVP award in his final game on Feb. 1, 1999 following the Broncos’ 34-19 victory in Super Bowl 33.
2003-04 New England Patriots (Super Bowls 38 & 39)
The Patriots established themselves as the NFL’s most recent dynasty with three Super Bowl wins in four years during the early 2000s, including back-to-back titles following the 2003-04 seasons. One decade later, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are still looking for that elusive fourth ring as they try to end their championship drought with a win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night.
