When I was 11 years old, I, with great anticipation and excitement to engage with the progenitor of one of my favorite genres and archetypes, read my first canon Sherlock Holmes novel. Only to immediately become consumed by incandescent rage over how poorly constructed I found the characters and storytelling. I was so sure that the titular character was an effigy of someone the author admired blindly and that Watson was the author himself projected onto the audience's lens that I researched Arthur Conan Doyle despite my utter disdain and felt both vindicated and further enraged when I learned about Dr. Bell. It shattered my understanding of public influence and literary notoriety, which I had assumed, until then, shared some correlation with merit. My frenzied indignation was too much for my small body, and I would not stop raving and writhing over it. I was so incensed, so inconsolably infuriated, that I was forbidden from checking out another Sherlock Holmes title by my school librarian (which I'd attempted to do to try and reconcile the outrageous schism between public perception and reality that I felt had just split my world apart).

I never fully recovered from that lividity, and even now, a whole sixteen years later, I have to moderate my exposure to information about, references to, and the canon works of Arthur Conan Doyle or I become helplessly riled.

This is to say Tumblr keeps recommending a post inexplicably referencing him to me, and I am once again repressing violent impulses against a man who's not even alive to experience them.

Harvey is a bit of a Trekkie. Has a uniform he pulls out at Halloween. Oh Doc Bones. Laughs halfway through his line. Damn it, Maru, I'm a doctor not a rocket scientist. 🦴

Caroline is a bit of a prankster on Spirit's Eve. A sugary spider in the orange Jello, anyone? 🕸

Pierre hates the holiday, but it's a great way to make money. All the pumpkin and candy sales. Abigail calls her dad a grinch. Wrong holiday, sweetheart. 😁

Elliott would make a dashing swashbuckling pirate. Complete with an eye patch borrowed from Marlon, a sword borrowed from Lance, the 18th century tricorn borrowed from Willy, and the parrot 🦜 from Emily.

Willy dusted off the old Sherlock Holmes outfit. A good excuse to smoke his pipe. Plus he's solved a mystery or two at sea, and reading Sir Arthur Conan Doyle helped pass the time. 🕵️‍♂️

Marlon doesn't really like dressing up, but he does it for the kids. Jas especially lights up when he arrives with his purple glowing orb. , Fortunes abound. It brings a smile to Marnie's face too. 🔮

Lance can't go as an Adventurer. It would be too obvious. Instead he cosplays another famous Arthur - a king from Camelot. The Round Table does sound ideal. Plus he hopes to tempt a pretty townsperson to play his Guinevere. 👑

Morris drunkenly crashes the festival, dressed as Daddy Warbucks. 💰 🤑 💸 Bald is not a good look on you, dude.

(Somehow I headcanon Claire as his neice. She was attending as Marian the Librarian from the Music Man musical. And she is beyond embarrassed when her uncle shows up). 📖

Gus came as a cowboy and rides to the rescue, offers to drive Morris home. 🤠

Sam and Shane, fellow Joja buddies, both try to make a distraught Claire feel better, after they find her hiding out on the beach. Well really Sam with his quips and Shane smoking and leaning against the rocks, offering to TP Morris' home nonchalantly. 🧻

Penny makes an amazing Amelia Earhart. Famous pilot who disappeared over the ocean somewhere. Cute coiffed curls peeping out from her aviator cap. Random aviation facts gathered from her library research. Harvey is smitten. 🛬

Clint wants to impress Emily. He goes as the Karate Kid. 🥋 Nearly gets wiped out during Marlon and Gil's annual demonstration.

Gunther tries juggling. He keeps dropping the ball. Everyone appreciates the effort. 🤹

Leah makes an appearance as Diana, alter ego Wonder Woman. She looks incredible in leather. Alex is drooling. He can't believe he's never noticed her before. 🦸‍♀️

Poor Jerry, it's his own blind spot showing because he hasn't had great experiences with academia, so he can't imagine why anyone would want to be a history nerd voluntarily. Even though most of his closest family are enormous nerds of one kind or another.

He'll figure it out the first time he gets really into the nitty gritty with an agronomist about soil chemistry and realizes he has spent an hour discussing the best techniques for mass-sampling pH levels to ensure a good growth medium for heirloom pepper crops. (He's trying to breed a unique sweet-hot Shivadh pepper that will compliment Eddie's perfect pizza recipe, it's a resource-intensive project, he has to get the soil balance correct!)

And then he will realize he IS a terroir nerd, which is arguably worse than being any other kind of nerd, because his only colleagues are either terrible wine snobs or people who are literally fascinated with dirt.

Ale news. Ciekawy jak poranne golenie, co nie?

A jednak. Rozłożyło mnie na łopatki.

Wchodzę. Mówię, że chcę się zapisać. Miła pani pokazuje mi tablecik, gdzie na stronce wpisać mam dane. Chwilę mi to zabiera, w międzyczasie pani wymienia się z młodym gościem, słyszę że mu wyjaśnia, a ten powtarza moje imię: "M., awesome!". Kończę wpisywanie i chłopak mnie przejmuje.

Gadka brzmi mniej więcej tak: "Fajnie że jesteś! Super! Wybierz sobie wzór karty." Biorę tą z ptakiem kākā. "Ekstra! To moja ulubiona! Widziałeś już tego ptaka?". Ja, że nie, myślałem, że żyją tylko w górach. "Nie, to kākāpō". A, no to widziałem. "Wspaniale! Pozwól, że cię oprowadzę". Pokazuje mi, co gdzie jest, GŁOŚNO I Z WERWĄ, mimo, że to przecież biblioteka. No ale zapisała się nowa dusza, więc radujmy się!

Serio, gdyby nie regały, książki i pogrążeni w lekturze czytelnicy, to myślałbym, że wdepnąłem do Hare Krisna albo Świadków Jehowy.

Czy mogę już dzisiaj pożyczyć? Zapomniałem dowodu zameldowania, mam tylko paszport. "Stary, w ogóle się tym nie przejmuj, nie wymagamy tego! Możesz dzisiaj wyjść ze 150 pozycjami! [chyba niedomkniętą gębę prezentuje gościowi jak to słyszę] Tak samo nie stosujemy już kar pieniężnych za spóźnienia! Płacisz tylko, jak zniszczysz lub zgubisz książkę!" Wcześniej wspomniałem, że dzieci też tu zapiszę. "Świetnie, mamy tu cykliczne spotkania, socializing". Ja mu na to, OK, jak tylko podgonią z angielskim w szkole. "Nie ma problemu, wpadajcie jak najszybciej, nie wszyscy tu są z rodzimym angielskim". Itd., itd.

Superbohater Conan Librarian istnieje i właśnie go poznałem.

Jak już poszedłem na górę coś sobie wybrać, to szczerze przyznam, że byłem bliski rozklejenia się. Normalnie chciało mi się ryczeć ze wzruszenia, jakbym oglądał Ingrid Bergman w ramionach Humphreya Bogarta, żegnających się w Casablance na zawsze. Stary chłop! Nie jestem jednak przyzwyczajony do pracowników budżetówki z zacięciem ewangelicznym.

Rozwala mnie ten kraj po prostu. Jak Truman z "Truman Show", cały czas próbujący odkryć drugie dno, oszustwo, wioskę potiomkinowską, rusztowania podpierające atrapy z niewidocznej strony, albo reflektor robiący za Jowisza. I nie mogę, kurde, nic znaleźć.

oh btw last night I went to the Philly premiere of WEIRD at the film festival and mannnnn, that movie is so fun. The best way I can describe it is... if you’ve ever seen UHF, Weird Al’s other movie, this movie seems exactly like one of the shows they would have shown on their station. I could absolutely see this insane flick being shown in between Conan the Librarian and Gandhi 2.

I know it’ll be on Roku for free next week, but I’m really glad I went out to the theater to see it. Weird Al is playing a show tonight in Philly, so a lot of his groupies had come a day early to see the movie. So everyone was really excited and the audience was full of superfans who got every joke (I think some of them might’ve even been extras in the movie..?) and the energy was really infectious. We all laughed so much. What a ridiculous movie. It was so fun!

And yes, he did show up unannounced at the theater. :’)
