I'm writing this because I need to put this down, and here seemed the place.

After the National Cabinet met, the Prime Minister announced that in a few weeks, it will no longer be mandatory for positive COVID cases to isolate--not for seven days, not for five days... just not mandatory.

The Prime Minister claimed that this was because case numbers were low, and insisted that this decision was made following medical advice. The Chief Medical Officer declared it was time to stop relying on isolation "in isolation". He actually said that we need a diverse series of measures to address COVID, and to stop seeing COVID as an exceptional respiratory disease.

The translation of all this is that mandating an isolation period was costing too much. Cafe, bar and restaurant owners were finding operating a business difficult, because COVID positive staff would, at short notice, have to miss work. Dominic Perrottet, the Premier of New South Wales, declared it was time for us to rely on "personal responsibility". The Prime Minister repeated that we can't depend on one measure, and then, without a single trace of awareness, said that vaccinations are proving effective. We now have no mask wearing in small spaces, or on public transport.

Paul Kelly, the Chief Medical Officer, with a smile on his face, actually said that most people were vaccinated, and had one booster, and a lot of us had also had natural immunity, too. None of these provide us long lived protection.

I'm perching on that tipping point where I'm about to be livid. If there is nothing for us to worry about, as case numbers are dropping (they're not, they're holding level, dipping and rising and dipping by the month) then by that logic, the need for isolation will drop, naturally. Exercising personal responsibility has always proven effective... as the number of people who are breath tested and found to be over the legal blood alcohol limit show.

So the real reason this decision was made is purely economical. But what is so foul and disgustingly revolting is that it is being dressed up as some kind of carefully considered science driven decision.

If case numbers are going down, then isolation is playing its part... and should stay, because the need for isolation will reduce. If case numbers are going up, we not only need isolation, but we also need mask awareness, vaccination awareness, and more measures, besides, like reliable testing. And we don't need a Chief Medical Officer telling us that things are just fine and dandy.

But I'm still livid.

tiredof having to play sleuth 3D chess to be sure to avoid people who you learn have covid and don't fucking stay home.

just learn that a fraquaintance has it and is still going to perform, maskless, in a musical. i guess because it's not a level to where she'd have a double. but i hope for the other performers that they at least KNOW, and too bad for the audience i guess.

and the way i learned it was "yeah she's upset that she has to perform like this, sick and with breathing problems" like dude ? maybe there's something a bit more upsetting about this situation ? I didn't say anything because i was still processing it. maybe after i would also not have said anything because i'd fear being the killjoy and i'm a coward (and i'm already #tagged as the one who Masks Too Much)

if she's at choir on tuesday i'm going back home. and sending a mail to choir "oh i don't have the right to mask for security [but other people can come sick -not covid- with a mask and not sing to not miss the weekly rehearsal] but she had covid two days ago and suddenly she's fine ?"

Everything aches and I would like it to stop.

#not sexy but here we are #i woke up sick but thankfully the covid test was negative #and i've been resting all day and hydrating etc #but im also achey and want to complain. this is my blog and unfortunately for everyone i make the rules #at least i finally found the electric kettle so ive been able to drink hot water too #we don't need to talk about why i like hot water when im sick instead of tea we just need to accept it and move on #although i will get an obscene amount of joy from freaking out the other admin tomorrow because it freaks her out a little every time #i also spilled some water on myself T.T #hopefully people are out of the kitchen soon so i can have dinner

On the one hand testing positive for flu made me feel slightly less idiotic about wasting so much time going to the doctor today

On the other hand it’s unclear if I have flu now or had flu when I was last sick a month ago and am just still testing positive… but either way there is absolutely nothing to do about it!

So it’s feeling kind of like a net zero in terms of actionable information

#i have basically never had a useful sick visit as an adult #I did want to rule out COVID given that my roommate just started testing negative #so that’s good #I have no respiratory or sinus symptoms just like the last two times I was sick #which just makes me feel completely unsure if I’m sick at all #but I do have a sore throat and earache along with all the headaches and fatigue #and was kind of hoping that no matter how mild I had ANYTHING treatable by antiobiotics #so that I wasn’t just facing the next nine straight days of working feeling vaguely like shit #my boss is at the doctor today for her second or third sinus infection and earache this month #so it seemed worth checking out #anyway i feel like the last time i was sick was enough weeks ago that it's safer to assume that i actively have flu now

i actually do kinda like delivering groceries on the side because it gives me such a unique cross-section of the community. i never know whose groceries im shopping for until i finish the delivery and see them/their home and it's like it adds more detail to the picture of who they are. the baby supplies going to the apartment that i know for a fact is one bedroom (they'll be moving soon - i bet they're apartment hunting, i hope they find a place). the new cat litter box, bowl, and kitten food going to the house covered in "i <3 my dog" paraphernalia (a kitten definitely showed up on the porch recently and made itself at home). the fairly healthy boring grocery order that includes an incongruous tub of candy-filled ice cream going to the home of an elderly woman with toddler toys in the yard (it's clearly for her grandkids, whom she sees often).

shopping for someone else's groceries is a fairly intimate thing. i've bought condoms and pregnancy tests, allergy medicine and nyquil, baby benadryl and teething gel, a huge pile of veggies paired with an equally huge pile of junk food, tampons and shampoo and closet organizers and ant traps and deodorizing shoe inserts and a million other little things that tell a million different stories in their endless combinations. one time someone had me buy one single green bean. i messaged them to confirm that's actually what they wanted, and they said yes - neither of them liked green beans very much, but they had a baby they were introducing to solid foods, and they wanted to let him try one to see if he liked them. another time i had someone request 50 fresh roma tomatoes - not for a restaurant, but for a person in an apartment. the kitchen behind them smelled like basil and garlic when they opened the door. another time i brought groceries to three elderly blind women who share a house. that was one of the few times i have ever broken my rule and gone inside a place i've delivered to, because they asked if i could place the grocery bags in a specific location in the kitchen for them to work on unloading and there was no way i was going to refuse helping.

i gripe about the poor tippers, but people can also be incredibly kind. one time i took shelter from a sudden vicious hailstorm inside an older lady's home in a trailer park, while i was in the middle of delivering her groceries. we both huddled just inside the door, watching in shock as golf-ball-sized hail swept through for about five minutes and then disappeared. she handed me an extra $10 bill on my way out the door.

when covid was at its deadliest, people would leave extra (often lysol-scented) cash tips and thank-you notes for me taped to the door or partially under the mat. i especially loved the clearly kid-drawn thank you notes with marker renderings of blobby people in masks, or trees, or rainbows. in summer of 2020 i delivered to a nice older couple who lived outside of town in the hills, and they insisted i take a huge double handful of extra disposable gloves and masks to wear while shopping - those were hard to find in stores at the time, but they wanted me to have some of their supply and wouldn't take no for an answer.

anyway. all this to say people are mostly good, or at least trying to be, despite my complaints.

One of the things you should know about me is that I do not and will never lose weight on purpose. I eat well and exercise regularly, but that’s just to keep myself healthy — not to lose weight. And for the most part, I DON’T lose weight. Even though I eat well and exercise, that really just keeps me in a solid stasis around 260/270, and I’m happy with that. I like how my body looks, and as long as all of my bloodwork is coming back in normal ranges I see no need to change my diet and exercise schedule. My weight might fluctuate a bit depending on the week, but it’s not something I measure on my own and it’s usually never enough that there’s a noticeable physical difference. So for me, the phrase “I’ve lost a lot of weight” isn’t some kind of celebration about my physical form, but an indicator that something is going wrong in my body that I haven’t intended upon.

Anyways. Lost a lot of weight this week :(

#covid my detested #turns out sleeping 18 hours a day and having no appetite means you eat very little #looked in myself in the mirror and was noticeably smaller and it’s legit like oh no. oh sweetheart you haven’t been eating enough #I’m fine now I actually just got the go ahead to leave my apartment with a mask and the antigen test was almost 100% negative #it just sucks to look at my body and see the physical toll this has taken #it was fucking awful I was so sick and fatigued that even if I had enough energy to cook dinner I didn’t have enough to do dishes #I’d go out to the kitchen wash like five plates and I’d be on the verge of passing out just a terrible headache #so I ate nearly nothing all day and eventually would give up and order dinner #but I’m feeling significantly better and did quite a few dishes yesterday! PLUS I went out to the grocery today!!!#I was VERY excited to be outside the apartment lol #I did drive through for the errands that I could but like #having had covid and obviously being masked up I am Very worried about how many people don’t have masks #the lady at the pharmacy didn’t have a mask on????? ma’am????#I wanted to just like yell HEY I HAVE COVID THATS WHY IM WEARING A MASK PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM ME #and like logically yes I’m past the major contagious period but still #it’s just suddenly like oh wow people are really acting like this isn’t still here and can hurt you #honestly I’m gonna mask at work every day now just for the ‘snot nosed kids’ factor lol #like I knew on some level that the cdc guidelines weren’t perfect but idk #after this experience I’m kind of like…dissapointed and angry??#like I followed all the rules. all the guidelines. this whole time I did exactly what was recommended to be safest #and I didn’t get sick the whole pandemic even when my family members got it I didn’t because I listened to the guidelines #so I trusted them. and when they said I didn’t need a mask because I was vaccinated and boosted I listened #and then I got covid. and it’s just this weird sense of betrayal like man I believed you would keep me safe #your job was to keep me safe #but clearly they gave in to political pressures because the guidelines clearly aren’t good enough #ESPECIALLY because I work in a school setting. they should not have removed mask mandates for these students #they don’t even know how to cover their mouth when they cough #it’s 50/50 which kid gave it to me but one of them would pull his mask down to cough and the other didn’t know what a fever felt like #but the guidelines said I was safe so I believed them #and then I got covid in the third fucjing week of my first job in a public school
