Mick is a good kid, but maybe he can use just a little guidance. But it’s unclear who will be guiding whom, because Mick’s brother came home from Tibet with the self-proclaimed Guru Lumpo Smythe-Finkel and his dog Lhasa―and then promptly settled both of them in Mick’s bedroom. Molly is a Dwergish girl―don’t worry if you don’t know what that is yet―and she seems to be going off the rails a bit. Along the way, the gang will get invited to a rollicking ghost party, consult a very strange little king, and actually discover the truth about Heaven. Or a version of the truth anyway, because in a Daniel Pinkwater tale, the truth is never the slightest bit like what you’re expecting.

My Review (5*) This book is brilliant, delightful, funny, and a bit weird. It's a short novel featuring a boy called Maurice, his bizarre family, a guru from Himalaya who was born in New Jersey, a couple of friends of Maurice. They are all in a small town called Poughkeepsie and I loved them all. There's plenty of humour, a fascinating world building, and a great cast of characters. I loved them all even if the Guru was a favorite. The author is an excellent storyteller and kept me turning pages and entertained. I laughed a lot and I was happy this is part of a series because there's a lot of other book I will read. Highly recommended. Many thanks to Tachyon Publications for this ARC, all opinions are mine

The Authors: Daniel Manus Pinkwater is an author of mostly children's books and is an occasional commentator on National Public Radio. He attended Bard College. Well-known books include Lizard Music, The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death, Fat Men from Space, Borgel, and the picture book The Big Orange Splot. Totally Youthful Tuesday

The cat in this book has problems. I mean, they’re not horrible problems when we look at them from our point of view, but to the cat, not good at all. I mean, why does the sun beam have to keep moving? Or the squirrel, c’mon now squirrel. And then there’s the vacuum. The horrible horrible vacuum.

It’s a typically awesome Jory John picture book, and, I didn’t realize that there are two other books by him and in the same vein, Penguin Problems and Giraffe Problems, so, a definite woo hoo there!

hmm the ending to season 3 of ozark was pretty unexpected and shocking so i’ll continue to be on the edge of my seat until season 4. and the ending of season 1 of steven universe was also super good.

Dear Parent!

Welcome back to a new week!  We started our  theme, Where do I live? Where do my family members live? The students were able to chose from the following centers: blocks, art, writing, math, play dough, and dramatic play.

Today in blocks the students were able to use construction vehicles and other materials to build homes.   We read the book, “The Big Orange Splot” by Daniel Manus Pinkwater.  The students had the opportunity to paint their own dream house in the art center. 

In the writing center the students explored blueprints and floor plans. The children were able to make their own floor plans of a house by looking at the examples in front of them.  Students were given the letter O and oval shape to trace over with the play dough.  

In the math center the children were given printed houses with numbers on each.  They used manipulatives to show how many people live in each house. The children in dramatic play were given a large flat cardboard where they drew their favorite room in their house.

The letter of the week is O. The shape of the month is oval and the color of the month is white.  Please keep this in mind for show and tell on friday.

Old Yeller (Fred Gipson) – Chú chó trung thành giúp cậu chủ nhỏ học cách yêu thương

Vào cuối những năm 1860 tại thị trấn hư cấu Salt Licks, Texas, chàng trai trẻ Travis Coates đã làm việc để chăm sóc trang trại của gia đình với mẹ và em trai Arliss, trong khi cha anh đi xe bò. I have a Daniel Pinkwater fridge magnet on my refrigerator! This is a source of great happiness to me every time I open my fridge. Marilyn Wann (fat activist and author of the great book Fat! So?) made this magnet out of one of Pinkwater’s business cards. When Marilyn helped me move into my apartment 10 years ago, she gave me this magnet as a housewarming gift. It was the coolest thing ever, because Pinkwater’s work had a huge impact on me when I was younger. His stuff is so funny and weird and humane... his YA novel Wingman is an underrated adventure classic, too. And I really want a business card of my own that reads “Serious Person.”
