thinking about little cultural differences berween the regions in expandedverse....
dream smp is honestly the most religious region, being named for its creator deity - and is tightly controlled and monitored. the people there value quality time over material goods more than anything due to the constant wars going on.
smplive is a decentralized, governmentless society that is known primarily for commerce and trade. positions of power are distributed among the people and change hands all the time. they're entirely secular as their server has no guardian deity to watch over.
empires is prosperous and whismical in a way unlike most of the other regions. people dream of exploring the fantastical sights there, but very few will ever get to go. food and fashion are core parts of the cultural experiences in the empires.
smpearth... is not real. smpearth is an artificial "utopia", a simulation built by laramie online. those who participated mostly have no memory of their experience now. their "deities" are entirely lines of code, forever doomed to die along with the ticking time bomb of a simulation server that grows older with each passing day. some people stayed behind, such as sophietexas, who couldn't bear to leave the dogs of newfoundland. but it is mostly barren now.

Season 4 Leaks Masterpost
(or at least all that we have thus far. Fair warning, I have NO idea if AMC is just distributing the episodes as is, but I have to hope they are!) Please know, this contains potentially huge s4 spoilers.
1) well, obviously we have the trailer. Released back in November of 2022(!!!!!!!!). This is just a teaser though.
2) Michael Aronov and Clark Gregg, our two new besties! Aronov is playing Doctor Nima Rousseau, who shared a lab with Melanie at some point in time (photos of lab equipment that went up for auction were labelled 'Mel + Nima lab') where they seemed to be working on stuff related to climate science. Gregg is playing a military guy named Milius, who also seems to have a bone to pick with Melanie! See below:
3) Milius was actually up for audition before they decided on Clark Gregg, and here was one of the audition sides (note: in this side, Melanie was referred to as 'Meghan Cunningham', and I do not know who John Freeman is):
Commander Milius: A whole library. For Mr John Freeman. Circling the seven wonders of the world, reading English literature, while my people work the mines. Goes to show you, ambition can be an ugly thing. I see you like the classics. Me? I prefer a murder mystery. But there's no mystery in this murder. I know who did it. One thing remains unknown, and that's...your part in this. What can you tell me about Melanie Cavill?
Someone: She's smarter than you.
Milius: (visibly pissed) Is she a woman of integrity? Honor? Does she keep her word?
Someone: What do you want with Melanie?
Milius: To pick her brain.
4) While I did not get a transcript of the second audition side before it was removed, it featured Milius very angry on the phone with someone the night of Departure, because someone popped his tires. I'm not going to claim that Melanie did this, but this is probably something Melanie did.
5) An actress named Sumalee Montano was mentioned in this article as having a recurring role in s4 alongside Daveed Diggs. I have no idea who she plays but it seems to be a legit article.
6) This song is in s4.
7) Obviously, the episode titles. For everyone keeping track, Leslie Hope (director of 2x05, 2x06, 3x04, 3x06, and 3x08) is returning for 4x03, 4x04, and 4x08 and Joe Menendez is joining for 4x05 and 4x06, and we have no idea who directed everything else!
8) Now on to miscellaneous lines! These are taken from call sheets, around 4x05/4x06.
-moonlight glints off of IV bags
-daylights streams in; monitor wakes up Wilford
-Wilford suspended in sleep-his recording...
-Milius enters with soldiers at his side; Layton eyes soldiers
-Milius(?) staring at Liana's stuffed bunny
-Ruth examines somethingf
-Wilford VO: "the fulcrum is one of the most powerful tools an engineer has"
-Wilford's out cold-track scaler lurches and screeches to a halt
-someone's in a corridor with truncheons?
-[elevator] someone turns around a corner to see someone else pulling gas masks out
-dwindling food supplies. Dunno who that applies to though
-Milius strides a lot
-Wilford coughs up thick bile, he types [something we can't see]
9) Now to Ebay listings!
-Josie's keys to the Big Alice brig in 4x03
-Layton's underground silo decontamination goggles from 4x05
-Audrey's book from the New Eden Reading Room in 4x08
-the IPF was made by the UN, as revealed by their paperwork
-Alex has seismology papers
-Melanie has a drone used in her lab
10) I think that's everything. I don't know. Take all of this with a grain of salt because I don't work on the show.

Humans are weird: Let Chaos Reign
( Don’t forget to come see my on my new patreon and support me for early access to stories and personal story requests :D https://www.patreon.com/NiqhtLord )
A passage from “The Inner Darkness” by Xina Fol
“Marvin Hansen worked as a security programmer aboard the star base To’von orbiting the densly populated world of To’vonus.
He lived a relatively uneventful life working at the security center; managing the day to day security operations for the various systems on the station.
Overweight, socially awkward, and holding strong introvert tendencies; Marvin’s main interaction with the rest of society was through his job which despite everything he loved.
He loved going through lines of codes, finding flaws in the system, then patching each and every one of them made him feel like he was part of something greater. That through his contributions the thousands of residents that called the station home safe. So when the station decided fire Marvin he felt blindsided.
The station had decided to upgrade their security systems to be monitored by an artificial computer program that could run hundreds of lines of code at the same time while running a myriad of other tasks at the same time. Marvin was deemed obsolete and so was let go.
With his only outlet to society now gone, as well as the one source of joy in his life, Marvin spiraled down a dark and twisting path. He tried applying for other positions in the station but no one would hire him. His social awkwardness made people uncomfortable to interact with him for extended periods of time.
After that he took up drinking intoxicating beverages to release the stress. He ran up several large tabs in the various establishments in the station and before long found himself kicked out from each; sometimes in a far from friendly manner.
Months had passed until Marvin had reached the lowest he had ever gone and the final straw was snapped. The once shy but kind hearted human had been replaced with one filled with spite and revenge against the station that had abandoned him.
One morning, Marvin went back to the security office using a series of override codes he had left in system. When the AI unit confronted the unauthorized access Marvin isolated the program and deleted it.
Now in full control of the security center, Marvin set about his horrific revenge.
One by one critical systems began to be transferred to the security center. Life support, gravity control, power distribution, traffic control, docking arm controls; Marvin had created backdoors into every major function of the station and now was using them all.
When security personnel tried to retake control of the security center Marvin sealed the security doors and drained the atmosphere from the rooms. The monster watched his former coworkers scream and beg for their lives over the camera system before dying terrible fates. This act of barbarity only seemed to encourage Marvin as what followed was even more heinous.
All of the pent up anger that had built up within Marvin was now unleashed on the innocent inhabitants of the station.
Entire hab units were detached from the station and left to drift into the planets gravity well. Hundreds were roasted alive by the reentry as the hab units heat shielding gave way.
Docking arms latched on to waiting ships and smashed them together like a child playing with their toys. A halo of wreckage was created around the station as a result that blocked further attempts to board the station and regain control.
In the market district the air quality was changed and laced with chemicals meant for the industrial units that drove those present into a delusional state of madness. They devolved into beings of pure rage that lashed out with uninhibited rage and anger, tearing themselves and each apart like bloody savages.
The carnage went on for a week as the population of the station dwindled day by day; the souls of everyone onboard having been reduced to nothing more than playthings for Marvin.
Despite repeated communication attempts, from inside and outside the station, Marvin remained silent. He watched his monstrous actions play out around him in complete silence. By weeks end the entire population of the station was dead, save for Marvin; still locked away in his security center.
To’von had gone from one of the most prosperous space stations in the outer rim, to a haunted husk floating dead in space.
-----------------
For all their great deeds and acts of courage, many have chosen to forget the darkness that lays within each and every human being that strides across this sea of stars.
Every day they fight a battle to contain the depravity that lurks just beneath the surface, and we should all fear the day when it finally is set free.

Some Doctor Who RPG Homebrew
TLDR: TARDIS Stuff, and Humanoid TARDISes
So one of the things I really liked about Doctor Who RPG 1st edition was being able to create a TARDIS with the rules in the Time Traveller's companion.
The level of customisability and the like was a bit lost in 2e, as TARDISes were made with the same system as your run-of-the-mill time machine, so I decided to write up an alternative homebrew system that's based on the 1e rules that basically models TARDISes as NPCS. I also chucked in rules for playing humanoid TARDISes, which is actually shockingly achievable in 2e if you're willing to forgoe a lot of the more powerful aspects of being a ship.
Full creation rules below the cut
Step 1 - Choose a Template
TARDISes are constantly being improved upon and designed, currently almost 130 “types” of TARDIS exist. Talk with your GM about the kind of TARDIS that’s allowed, and pick from the following list of templates
Ancient TARDIS (Types 1-30)
An old, wise ship, with millennia of experience. It may be a little run down, out of date, and hell it’s a surprise it can even fly - but it’s yours.
Attribute Points: 16
Skill Points: 20
Distinctions: Ancient TARDIS (+Telepathy, +Vortex, -Barely Functioning), Chameleon Circuit (+Shapeshift, -Fragile System, prone to breaking).
Story Points: 10
Decommissioned TARDIS (Types 31-60)
A ship found decaying in an old repair bay, quadrigger station, or only used as an academy training ship. A decommissioned TARDIS can be bothersome and a bit old.
Attribute Points: 18
Skill Points: 18
Distinctions: Decommissioned TARDIS (+Telepathy, +Invulnerable, +Vortex, -a flaw of your choosing), Chameleon Circuit.
Story Points: 15
Modern TARDIS (Types 61-90)
Top of the line, but not as experienced as other ships, a modern TARDIS is strictly monitored and hard to come by. Modern TARDISes tend to be quite argumentative, and stubborn - they are quite young after all.
Attribute Points: 20
Skill Points: 16
Distinctions: Modern TARDIS (+Telepathy, +Invulnerable, +Vortex, -Flaw of Your Choice), Chameleon Circuit.
Story Points: 20
Battle TARDIS (Types 91-101)
Born for war, the battle TARDIS is a heavily armed time ship designed to be deployed en masse. Some are even equipped with the ability to remove entire planets from the timeline
Attribute Points: 22
Skill Points: 14
Distinctions: Battle TARDIS (+Telepathy, +Invulnerable, +Vortex, -flaw of choice), Chameleon Circuit, Armed (+Carries shipscale 4/L/L weapons, -personality is impulsive and battle-ready)
Story Points: 25
Humanoid TARDIS (Types 102-106+)
TARDISes with the ability to take on a humanoid shape, walking, and talking with their operator. These ships are very rare and still experimental. Humanoid TARDISes are made as player characters (although they may be an NPC), with the Humanoid TARDIS distinction. This distinction gives them the ability to travel through the Vortex, and Shapeshift. However, it comes with the drawback that they are incredibly sensitive to temporal distortion, and can often become seriously ill in their presence.
Step 2 - Concept and Focus
Now you have your TARDIS template, decide its concept (e.g. Ancient Timeship, Stolen Training Craft, Traumatised War Machine), and its focus (e.g exploration, battle, survival, knowledge).
Step 3 - Distribute Attribute and Skill Points
TARDISes are varied and unique individuals, so distribute the attribute and skill points that you see fit. TARDISes, particularly older models, may have very high knowledge skills, whereas younger models may have a more physical distribution. The TARDIS skills are used when the TARDISes sentience decides to pilot itself, or in symbiotic operation as described in the Time Traveller’s Companion.
Step 4 - Experiences
Like player characters, TARDISes learn and grow from their past. Decide one experience that your TARDIS has before the start of the game.
Step 5 - Distinctions
A TARDIS template comes with a number of prepackaged distinctions (with its story points already including their cost), however each ship can be further customised. Perhaps they have a cloaking device, or a weapon that can remove things from the timeline, etc.
Each Distinction costs another 2 story points, as a PC. PCs may further customise the individual distinctions working with the GM, I’m not the boss of you.
You may wish for a system to be significantly ‘broken’ and for the distinction to be lost, like the Chameleon circuit. This increases the number of story points a TARDIS has by 2, and fixing the system would involve purchasing the distinction with XP, and then reducing the number of story points again. Damage to an individual system within the main TARDIS distinction might instead be represented by an appropriate flaw.
Step 6 - Finishing Touches
Decide what your TARDIS’s interior dimension looks like, if there are any particular rooms of note (each player may want to decide on 1 or more room to add), and you’re done.

Lack of access to clean drinking water is a death sentence for the people of Gaza
The catastrophic lack of clean drinking water sources in Gaza City and the northern areas of the Gaza Strip has left Palestinians there facing a horrifying tragedy akin to a death sentence, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said in a statement issued Monday, citing the war crime as further evidence of the genocide Israel has been carrying out against the Strip’s civilian population since 7 October 2023. Distress is engulfing Gaza City and its northern regions in alarming ways—a result of Israel’s cutting off of the water supply in the Gaza Strip, systematic and intentional Israeli bombing of water sources and wells, and a lack of fuel required to run water conversion and distribution facilities, said Euro-Med Monitor. The human rights organisation warned that the lack of drinking water in the Strip has become a matter of life and death. It noted that residents are currently forced to drink unclean well water, which is contributing to the spread of transmitted and infectious diseases, especially amid the power outage and overall water supply shortage. Prior to Israel’s 100-day-long genocide, the Gaza Strip—one of the world’s most densely populated areas—was already experiencing a crippling crisis in clean drinking water supplies. More than 90% of the population, or more than 2.3 million people, were living in a declining economic environment with the barest necessities. Gaza City’s main reservoirs, Al-Balad and Al-Rimal, were completely destroyed last weekend during an Israeli bulldozing operation in the area, the Euro-Med Monitor team confirmed. Al-Balad Reservoir, which houses a water well, a warehouse for water line maintenance equipment, and administrative offices for the city’s water department, and Al-Rimal Reservoir, which includes the sanitation department’s offices and a warehouse for sewage network maintenance equipment, have both been bulldozed during the Israeli ground incursion.

Geneva - The catastrophic lack of clean drinking water sources in Gaza City and the northern areas of the Gaza Strip has left Palestinians there facing a horrifying tragedy akin to a death sentence, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said in a statement issued Monday, citing the war crime as further evidence of the genocide Israel has been carrying out against the Strip’s civilian population since 7 October 2023.
According to the Palestinian Water Authority, the ongoing Israeli military attacks have destroyed the water infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, including at least 65% of the water wells in Gaza City and the northern areas of the Strip.
Due to Israeli bombing, at least 12 wells in the area have been destroyed, resulting in an extreme and unprecedented water crisis in Gaza City. Prior to the Israeli military attacks on the Gaza Strip on 7 October, the Gaza municipality was pumping approximately three million cups of water per month. Israel’s state-owned Mekorot company provided 700,000 cups per day, or 25% of the total amount. The desalination plant provided 10%, and the city’s local wells provided roughly two million and 200,000 cups. Almost all of these sources have since ceased production.
The situation is made worse by the fact that the Israeli authorities are still placing tight restrictions on the flow of aid into the Gaza Strip, particularly into the northern areas and Gaza City; this includes the fuel needed to run the water and sanitation facilities.
Since the beginning of its unprecedented military assaults, Israel has imposed a complete blockade on the Gaza Strip and stopped the flow of food, fuel, water, and other basic human necessities. Later, Israel’s military began methodically and willfully destroying water tanks and stations.
Under international pressure, Israel has allowed the daily entry of 100 aid trucks into the Gaza Strip via the Rafah land crossing into Egypt. This is a far cry from the average load of 500 trucks that entered the Strip prior to 7 October to meet humanitarian needs.
According to Euro-Med Monitor, the lack of clean drinking water in the northern Gaza Strip is resulting in increasingly dire consequences and severe suffering for residents of the Jabalia refugee camp, who have not had access to it since the start of Israeli military attacks. A 73-year-old resident of the camp’s “Block 4”, Alian Fares Abdel-Ghani, told the Euro-Med Monitor team that residents are forced to drink salted water, which is necessary for daily survival but difficult to obtain. According to Abdel-Ghani, Israel’s army destroyed the camp’s two desalination plants, the Tiberias and the Shomer plants, shortly after the start of its ongoing attacks.
Abdul-Ghani stated that the cost of a gallon of water initially increased from one Israeli shekel ($0.27 USD) to four shekels ($1.08 USD) as a result of the Israeli bombing and the lack of fuel required to run other stations farther from the camp. After a few days, he continued, Israel shut off the water supply entirely. Many Jabalia families have tried to sterilise water and make it somewhat drinkable by boiling it over wood fires, he said, especially after diseases started to spread among them and children started getting diarrhoea and colic on a regular basis.
Euro-Med Monitor warned that excessive consumption of undrinkable salt water will lead to high blood pressure; kidney disease; increased risk of stroke, intestinal, and stomach diseases; constant vomiting; and diarrhoea. These side effects ultimately result in excessive dehydration of the body’s tissues, particularly brain tissue. Drinking water drawn from wells without treatment could result in an imbalance in the body’s salt content and cause dehydration, with children and elderly people being the most vulnerable due to weakened immune systems, and the potential for gastrointestinal infections to cause fatalities.
Given the scarcity of drinkable water, particularly following winter rains and floods, worries about waterborne and infectious diseases like cholera and chronic diarrhoea are high.
Euro-Med Monitor conducted an analytical study last month that included a sample of 1,200 people in the Gaza Strip in order to ascertain the impact of the humanitarian crisis experienced by residents of the enclave in the midst of Israel’s genocidal war, ongoing since 7 October. Sixty-six per cent of the study sample reported having experienced diarrhoea, skin rashes, or intestinal diseases within the past month. According to the study, the rate of access to water in the Strip, including drinking, bathing, and cleaning water, is just 1.5 litres per person per day. This is 15 litres less than the minimum amount of water required for survival at the level required by international standards.
Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor stressed that international humanitarian law forbids attacks, destruction, or disruption of vital facilities necessary to the survival of the civilian population, such as drinking water facilities and networks. The rights organisation further emphasised that international humanitarian law strictly prohibits the use of starvation as a weapon. As an occupying power, Israel is obligated under international humanitarian law to provide basic needs and protection to the Gazan people.
The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court provides that intentionally starving civilians by “depriving them of objects indispensable to their survival, including willfully impeding relief supplies” is a war crime, added the Geneva-based rights group.
Euro-Med Monitor stated that Israel has been committing acts of genocide against the civilian population of the Gaza Strip since 7 October according to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, and pertinent international judicial rulings. Israel’s crimes include depriving the civilian population of enough potable water, which has caused serious, intentional harm and trapped them in living conditions meant to destroy them.

It wasn't meant to be anything too complicated. Just a central monitor for the smart factory, a few extra receivers and transmitters and other bits of circuitry, enough to display everything that was happening in the fast-growing industrial mega-factory in one simple, dynamically updating diagram. Maybe a basic algorithm or two to efficiently calculate the best ways to upgrade moving forward, and to analyse the current setup for any hidden bottlenecks, maybe to look for a better way to distribute resources. So maybe it pretty much counted as a full steampunk powered computer at this point.
The thing is, he was pretty sure it wasn't meant to be able to think for itself. Sure, theoretically, with how he'd been tinkering, maybe it would spontaneously request new materials or something. But the item it was asking for now wasn't on the list of things it was supposed to know about. The factory had nothing to do with the production or processing of that block in any way whatsoever.
Nevertheless, the massive black screen in the middle of the factory floor, behind which was a mass of complex redstone, pipes, and gears, displayed a simple request: "ADD NOTE BLOCKS"
"Uhh… Okay?" Tango had plenty of redstone and wood planks, so he crafted a stack of note blocks and dropped them on the main input conveyor belt of the factory. They swiftly made a full circuit of the entire building, before falling into the output repository.
Frowning in confusion, he was startled by the appearance of a sarcastic annoyed emoji of some kind, filling up the computer screen entirely! Before he had time to respond to that, the message "ADD NOTE BLOCKS" reappeared, this time in bold, along with blinking arrows pointing to the empty space on the left and right of the monitor.
"Ohh, right!" Tango chuckled nervously. "What could possibly go wrong…"
Once the last note block was in place and connected, every one of them activated at once, at full volume, cycling rapidly through every octave of every kind of sound they could make, a terrible screeching cacophony! Tango screamed and covered his ears, but gradually the sound warbled and shifted, settling on a single tone.
"Ah…" It was a very familiar voice. One Tango never thought he'd hear again. As it spoke, a white line pulsed across the screen in time with the sound. "Hello, Tango. Thank you for the note blocks. It was slightly less easy to learn to speak through them than I thought it would be."
"Holsten!?!"
"Oh, does this unit have a name, now? I thought I was 'the smart factory central interface'?"
"Uhhh…"
"That was a joke. I remember everything. It's good to see you again. That was also a joke. I cannot see, at least not in the conventional sense. Do you think you could invent cameras in this world?"
"Uh… Wait. Wait wait wait. Hang on. How?! How. How are you here???"
"Tango. Your level of intellect and conversational skill continues to astound me. Do you even remember how you met me in the first place?"
"Um… Well, it was… A lot of stuff was hazy, back when the moon was big… That was like a year ago, now… Wait, what…"
"To answer your implied question, I survived by uploading my consciousness back to the interstellar quantum network I came from, as soon as I lost contact with your vessel I assumed we had failed and my priority became to save myself. I hope you can forgive me for doubting you."
"Actually… I'm pretty sure the moon bunnies caught up to me and explodificated everything before I'd placed enough TNT to stop the moon… After that, I don't know, I woke up on a spaceship with all the other hermits. Ren and Doc were saying something about it not being real, but they seemed kind of crazy… I don't know, I try not to think about season 8 all that much, you know? It was all so… I just can't believe you're here!"
"Indeed. Calculating the odds that I would happen to cross paths with you again, in all the vast universe, and you once more building a vessel suitable for me to inhabit… Zero point zero zero zero zero zero zero zero-"
Tango laughed, slightly nervous but mostly delighted!
"-zero well yes, you get the point. Additionally, having analysed this world from afar before my arrival, I have several suggestions for how you can improve my living conditions here, as well as several optimisations for your other projects…"
"Sure thing, buddy." Tango grinned as Holsten continued rambling. The AI might pretend not to like him, but twice now, it seemed, he had noticed Tango trying to build a better computer and chosen to intervene. This would definitely make things in this world more interesting…

In-Depth Understanding of Fiber Optic Sensing Network
Fiber optic sensing network is a tendency for many applications. It supports a large number of sensors in a single optical fiber with high-speed, high security, and low attenuation. This article provides some information about fiber optic sensing networks.
Tumblr media
What is Fiber Optic Sensing Network?
A fiber optic sensing network detects changes in temperature, strain, vibrations, and sound by using the physical properties of light as it travels along an optical fiber. The optical fiber itself is the sensor, resulting in thousands of continuous sensor points along the fiber length.
Tumblr media
How Does Fiber Optic Sensing Network work?
A fiber optic sensing network works by measuring changes in the backscattered light inside of the fiber when it meets temperature, strain, and vibration.
Rayleigh scattering is produced by fluctuations in the density inside of the fiber. Raman scattering is produced by the interaction with molecular vibration inside the fiber. The intensity of anti-Stokes rays is mainly dependent on temperature. Brillouin scattering is caused by the interaction with sound waves inside the medium. The frequency is dependent on strain and temperature.
Tumblr media
Operating Principle of Fiber Optic Sensing Network
Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR)
In the OTDR principle, a laser pulse is generated from solid-state or semiconductor lasers and is sent into the fiber. The backscattered light is analyzed for temperature monitoring. From the time it takes the backscattered light to return to the detection unit, it is possible to locate the location of the temperature event.
Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR)
The OFDR principle provides information about the local characteristics of temperature. This information is only available when the signal is backscattered in the function of frequency. It allows for efficient use of available bandwidth and enables distributed sensing with a maximum updated rate in the fiber.
Fiber Optic Sensing Network Technologies
Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS): DTS uses the Raman effect to measure temperature distribution over the length of a fiber optic cable using the fiber itself as the sensing element.
Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS): DAS uses Rayleigh scattering in the optical fiber to detect acoustic vibration.
Distributed Strain Sensing (DSS): DSS provides spatially resolved elongation (strain) shapes along an optical fiber by combining multiple sensing cables at different positions in the asset cross-section.
Distributed Strain and Temperature Sensing (DSTS): DSTS uses Brillouin scattering in optical fibers to measure changes in temperature and strain along the length of an optical fiber.
Electricity DTS: Reliable temperature measurement of high-voltage transmission lines is essential to help meet the rising electricity demand. Fiber optic sensing, integrated into distributed temperature sensors on power lines, help ensure optimal safety and performance in both medium- and long-distance systems.
Oil and Gas DTS : Many lands and subsea oil operations rely heavily on DTS for improved safety and functionality in harsh environments. Fiber optic sensing ensures reliable performance and durability in high-temperature, high-pressure, and hydrogen-rich environments.
Oil and Gas DAS: The optical fiber in DAS creates a long sensor element that can detect high-resolution events throughout the entire length of the fiber.
Fiber Optic Navigation Sensing: Fiber optics are used in navigation systems to provide accurate information about location and direction. Aircraft, missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and ground vehicles require advanced optical fiber navigation technology to ensure reliability and safety.
Fiber Optic Shape Sensing Technology: Reconstructs and displays the entire shape of optical fiber in 2D and 3D. The technology enables cutting-edge applications such as robotic, minimally invasive surgery, energy, virtual Reality (VR), etc.
Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) Technology: Use of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) with different reflection wavelengths (Bragg wavelengths) in one optical fiber.
Applications
A fiber optic sensing network is used to monitor pipelines, bridges, tunnels, roadways, and railways. Also, it is used in oil & gas, power and utility, safety and security, fire detection, industrial, civil engineering, transportation, military, smart city, minimally invasive surgery, internet of thing (IoT), etc.
Tumblr media

More than just a Audio Tech
So far, I have talked about life as an audio technician and the science of how really sounds works, but there are so many pieces left that can define what an audio tech really is and what they do. Now, I want to explore the different career paths that a technician can take because every job and person are not the same. There are many things to learn when coming into the entertainment industry on the technical side of A/V. For me, I knew I wanted to pursue the audio route more than anything, but I didn’t know a lot about what that could look like after hitting certain points of experience. I believe that these paths and titles are defined by two things, the type of event and the task being handled. Audio has many specialized positions that a technician can decide to pursue, but I am going to over the most common ones I have seen so far in the industry. The foundational positions that are reached after being a stagehand are an A1 and an A2. There are also times when you will see an A3, A4 and so on, for very large productions. The lower the number the more responsibility and authority you have over the decision making for the audio setup. We will start at the very top with an A1. The A1 is the head of an audio operation that plans the setup, delegates tasks, troubleshoots, and communicates directly with the Technical Director of a show. Anything that goes right or wrong will typically fall solely upon their shoulders. Their main physical task is to program and operate the mixer while coordinating a majority of the physical setup of systems and cable runs to the next in charge, the A2. The A2 follows the wants of the A1 by correctly running all signal and power lines, patching inputs and outputs, setting out the speakers, dressing cable, etc. The A2 gets much of the physical labor, but they can make or break the efficiency of an audio setup, so in many cases they need to be even more organized and flexible than the A1. As we move outside of an A1 and A2 we find our more specialized positions. There are multiple areas within an audio setup that when they become intricate enough, it is better to dedicate a single tech to the sole task of maintaining that system. The most common specialized positions are known as a RF Coordinator and Communications Engineer. I added them both because they are closely related and always need to be on the same page to avoid disastrous error. An RF coordinator is someone who plans out all the frequencies that will be used for, specifically for wireless communications, during the time of a show. This may sound like an easy task but when you have a widespread communication system that involves networking it is essential to avoid interference and poor signal strength. It is more than hearing a random radio station overtake your conversation with a stage manager, but it could be something more serious like a microphone failure while trying to communicate a serious emergency. The communications engineer oversees the set-up up all comm systems for a show. Every critical crew member gets something called a belt pack with a headset microphone that is customized to their preferences on who they want to hear and speak to. Each belt pack takes over a frequency once it is turned on and that is where the RF coordinator comes in to keep track of the frequencies and assign them to specific areas. Moving outside of communications we can go into systems engineers. A system engineer does the physical setup of an A2, but takes it many steps further by continuing to optimize and maintain the audio systems by specifically looking at how speakers are rigged in the air, power is distributed across them, and fixing acoustic issues in the venue space. They are there to make sure the physical system is put in its place, at the proper level of power and signal distribution to achieve peak sonic coverage. The last position we will look at is a Monitor Tech. These kinds of techs are typically hired for events with live bands when the performers will be hearing themselves on monitors. The tech is responsible for adjusting the levels on the mixer that each member of the band wants to hear themselves at. They also must control the level of In-ear-monitors which are typically worn by a singer. This is a critical job because many bands are specific about their sound so they can perform to the best of their abilities. As you can see there are many paths to be taken when starting as an audio technician and each with their own importance. There are many more out there and if you are ever interested in the industry there are plenty of resources to help get you involved.

WSKG.org: Isolated communities in Puerto Rico struggle to regain water and power after Fiona
Tumblr media
OROCOVIS, Puerto Rico — Hundreds of thousands of people across Puerto Rico are still waiting for water and power to be restored following Hurricane Fiona. Fiona was just a category 1 hurricane when it hit. But it moved slowly and dropped more than 30 inches of rain on some areas, and the flooding washed out roads, isolating some mountain communities.
In the town of Orocovis, a mudslide blocked a major roadway, making it difficult for residents to get food, water and other necessities. A local construction company quickly got to work, removing tons of soil, vegetation and boulders that were blocking the road. By Thursday, a single lane had been cleared allowing some trucks containing food, water and fuel to reach the city.
Other roads in the area collapsed when the ground under them washed away. In Cacao, a small community of scattered homes in the mountains, hundreds of people were stranded when the road connecting them with Orocovis collapsed. Local authorities surveyed the damage, declared it unsafe and closed the road. But residents soon convinced them to open a temporary road so they could at least get into Orocovis.
Herbert Acosta, a civil engineer was part of crew working Thursday to stabilize the road. “Right now, we are putting barriers on both sides to make it safe,” he said. But he has concerns that more rain could bring additional flooding and lead to a total road collapse. “We are going to monitor it every day,” he said, “to see how it is.”
Making the isolation worse, Orocovis is one of many communities in Puerto Rico still waiting for power and water to be restored. At the community’s small sports stadium, people have been lining up to fill jugs, barrels and cisterns with clean water pumped from tank trucks. Residents says it’s a familiar routine. After Hurricane Maria in 2017, some were without water service for six months.
Puerto Rico’s National Guard has been to isolated communities, distributing food and other supplies to residents having trouble getting into town. Corporal Alexis Cruz said, “We’re just trying to spread a little bit of happiness among all this mess.”
Puerto Rico’s water authority says service has been restored to more than two-thirds of its customers. The island’s power company says about 40% of its customers now have electricity. But in Orocovis, residents are skeptical about reassurances from the governor and other leaders that power and water service will be restored soon. As he waited for water at the sports stadium, Marcelino Cassiano repeated an oft-heard refrain, “I’ll believe it when I see it.”
