Recovering from ECCC and realizing that while I definitely saw some Harry Potter art, it was noticeably less than previous years.

I will never take issue with anyone creating HP shit for their small business for a couple of reasons:

1) Head TERF JK Rowling won't see a fucking dime.

2) Likely, these people were making this art years before Rowling went full fuckshit and it was a reliable source of income that an independent artist couldn't just cut from their inventory.

And, full disclosure, I have a couple of pieces of HP art made my independent artists. Including a little felt design of Moaning Myrtle that says, "You can share my toilet." that I bought because it was perfect for my creepy bathroom.

In December, at ECCC 2021, there was definitely still a good amount of HP art for sale. The fact that eight months later, there was a noticeable drop in content makes me think people sold off their old stock at ECCC 2021 (which was the first ECCC since 2018) and then just didn't make it again.

It'll be interesting to see what's available at Rose City in a few weeks. There's some local folks at that show whose work I practically have memorized, so there's particular products they make that I can spot halfway across the floor.

I think one of the things I can't help but to envy a little with at cons is how common it is for people to have their partners assist them and it just seems nice.

Since 2018, most of my experience has been being completely self sufficient the whole time and that's in part my own need to control my table but there's still something dreamy at the idea of having someone come to a con to just support you. I've had people help me before and after the con and that's nice but at points it gets a bit lonely doing it by myself.

Seeing just this one creator go to ECCC just struck something in me. The idea of going all through it with someone who cares about you. Resting on each other in the airport, getting bubble tea Thursday evening after setting up together, someone helping me prep the items for a customer while I deal with the transaction, cuddling to sleep after a long work day to then help motivate me out of bed the next morning, and a nice meal from the earnings at the end of the day.

Sometimes I just think about my career, if I ended up with dream jobs that took me to events or (in the wildest dreams) red carpets, that I'm at a point in my life where I'd experience that alone. And part of me just wishes in those futures that I had someone besides me in the photos who's happy that I made it there.

There's always the question of what type of partner I'd have. I don't know if I should expect someone who is or isn't an artist at this point. Is it happier to have someone who's career is separate from my own or someone who would probably just as used as me in being a public figure. Haha fuck dude, idk.

"The color supervisor looks at everything universally and makes sure all the color is working well with one another," Bian explains. "With a hot dog example, it depends on not just the hot dog's natural color, but its color within the lighting of the scene. A hot dog in one room is gonna look different than a hot dog under the sunlight. The supervisor will adjust the color of it per scene so that it lives correctly in its environment."

"For the alien food, the paladins look at it and are often disgusted by it, so visually we knew it needed to be kind of gross looking to humans," Bian continues. "During the [early] phase of design, some of the original concepts that we had involved a lot of tubes and coils. Sacks — drooping off bowls — is another shape."

While making food look figuratively and literally "alien" can involve a lot of playing with shapes, making it look tasty requires a simple, widely used animation trick: specular highlights.

"It's like a secret ingredient," Bian teased. "Specular highlights make any food look good. Taking the hot dog, if it's just a drawing that's oblong in shape and a purplish-pink color, it's not exactly the most appetizing. But add a couple of little shiny spots on it, and suddenly it's looking like a grilled hot dog. Or with a muffin, when you're looking at it under the light, and it's catching a little bit — we make it glisten."

Confirmed, the Teen Titans totally hit up Starbucks when they aren't fighting crime. This was the second time I've ever gone to Starbucks while in cosplay where I've been cosplaying a character with a simple enough name to actually get it written on the cup -- it was honestly very exciting. 😉👌 My friends and I went to Starbucks during ECCC to try the exclusive frappuccinos they had for the con! This is me trying The Warrior frappuccino, it was pretty good.

Fjord and Jester meeting . . .

I suddenly wanted to see Travis and Laura’s ECCC panel again because I couldn’t remember the backstory they revealed on how Fjord and Jester met. So here is the panel (which starts 1:41:40)  and the timestamp is 2:02:38 in case anyone else wants to see it again too.
