My Person | Sihtric & OC
Tumblr media
Part of my Fire In Her Eyes series
‘Finan is the love of my life, but you are my soulmate.’
A/N: I have been obsessively watching Grey's Anatomy recently and I love Meredith and Christina's friendship and the way they call each other their 'person'. It inspired this little fic, which was supposed to be happy and sweet but actually turned out quite sad (I just couldn't help myself!).
Warnings: angst, spoilers for Fire Turns To Ash
Word Count: 706
Sihtric smiled as he walked across the meadow outside Coccham, the scatter of different coloured wildflowers gently swaying in the breeze. Lucinda lay in the grass, her eyes closed as she enjoyed the warmth of the sun on her face as she rested her hand on her swollen stomach. She looked so peaceful lying there, her red hair splayed out across the ground around her head, glowing golden under the sunshine.
‘I know you are there,’ she murmured, opening her eyes and smiling up at him.
He smirked a little – he had never been able to sneak up on her.
She patted the patch of grass beside her. He lowered himself to the ground and laid down beside her, looking up at the blue sky.
She let out a sigh. ‘It’s good to be home.’
Sihtric said nothing. It had only been a week since they had returned from Winchester, a week since the siege had ended. He had spent the past month consumed with worry, fear gnawing away at his insides as he lay awake every night thinking that she was dead. Everything was alright now, they had all survived and Lucinda was happy, expecting her and Finan’s fourth child, but that fear of losing her and stayed with him.
He reached for her hand and held it tight.
‘You know I love you, don’t you?’ he said softly.
Lucinda looked over to him with a small frown. ‘Of course I do. What made you ask that?’
‘I came so close to losing you…’
‘But you didn’t,’ she said firmly. ‘I am right here, with you.’
He gave her a smile which was tinged with sadness. ‘I’d be lost without you. Finan acts as if he’s the only one who couldn’t live without you, but I couldn’t imagine my life without you in it.’
‘Me neither. You are my person.’
‘What does that mean?’
‘Oh, you know. You understand me, you know what I’m thinking, you’re always there for me no matter what. You’re my person,’ she smiled and gave him a slight shrug.
‘Shouldn’t Finan be your person?’ he asked, playing with a blade of grass between his fingers.
Lucinda thought for a moment. ‘Finan is the love of my life, but you are my soulmate.’ She let out a small chuckle. ‘Platonic soulmate, before you get the wrong idea.’
He laughed with her.
‘You’re my person too,’ he said softly, looking over to her. ‘But don’t tell Eal I said that.’
She let out a laugh. ‘I think she already knows. She always jokes that we come as a pair.’
He shook his head, a wide smile on his face. He felt her squeeze his hand tight. ‘You mean so much to me, Sihtric. Never doubt how much I love you.’
Sihtric smiled, a warm feeling in his chest. He thought back to his childhood in Dunholm – back then he would never have imagined he would be lucky enough to feel so loved. He closed his eyes, and they laid in silence for a long time, the sound of birdsong above them.
Sihtric opened his eyes and felt tears roll down his cheeks.
He could hear the now familiar crash of waves against the cliffs below Bebbanburg, the harsh northern winds whistling through the shutters and bringing a draft into the room.
He let out a sigh, wiping his face with his hand tiredly as he rolled onto his back.
He often dreamed of Lucinda, of days long ago. Some nights he got to relive happy memories of them together, to see her laugh and smile again. Other nights he relived the day of the battle, the day his fears became real, the day he lost her. Even after years had passed, the memory of losing her still stung as fresh as the day it had happened.
He looked over at Ealhswith who was still asleep beside him, and he smiled softly, learning across to kiss her cheek. He tried hard never to take for granted the family he had, knowing too well that the gods could take them away from him.
He then got up and readied himself to face another day without his friend; without his person; without his Lucinda.

Behind Enemy Lines
Chapter 5
Tumblr media
This is not a new fic but realized I never properly posted it to tumblr just linked to my AO3 which is locked to non-registered users so I am reposting here.
Pairing(s): Sihtric/Bloodhair (ch 1 only) Sihtric/Finan/Uhtred (main) Summary: Things do not go according to plan while Sihtric is undercover in the Danish camp. He is presented with a hard choice and has to live with the consequences. Warnings/Tags: dubcon, rough sex, oral sex, anal sex, forced orgasm, bruises, biting, angst, hurt/comfort, canonical character death, DDDNE
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5
It took a while for Sihtric to calm down, his nose was runny and his eyes were sore but his heart had slowed to a normal pace and he had stopped crying. Finan passed him a damp rag to wipe his face clean and then stepped in to help spread the healing salve over the remainder of his wounds with gentle care. As the last of the thick liquid was smoothed over the throbbing bite mark on the back of Sihtric's neck Finan made his opinion known regarding having a conversation with Uhtred as soon as possible.
"Tonight, once Uhtred is done with Father Beocca, you need to tell him what happened." Finan’s voice was soft and Sihtric would find it soothing in any other scenario but in this moment it just made his hackles rise.
"She's dead, it's over. What does it matter now?" He didn't want to think about it anymore! He wanted to forget and move on and pretend it never happened!
"It matters because you were hurt, are still hurt! Uhtred deserves to know. We can't keep this a secret from him. You know that." Sihtric buried his head deeper into Finan's chest and shuddered to think how Uhtred would react. Prior to being ensnared by Skade the lord had always been protective of Sihtric and he would hate himself for what happened.
But, if the last couple of days had shown him anything it was that he should never have kept it a secret to begin with. He had not been handling it well and his lovers deserve the truth from him. Maybe if he had told them earlier Skade would have never lived to see the inside of Coccham's walls.
He pressed a feather light kiss to Finan's neck, the Irishman's arms tightening around him in response. "You'll be there too?"
A press of lips against his temple. "Of course love." Finan cupped his face with both hands, they were cool against Sihtric's heated face, and tipped his head back until their eyes met. "Now Osferth is waiting for us at the alehouse. Let's mingle and try not to look too suspicious, eh?"
It made sense, spending the evening with Osferth at the alehouse was a part of their usual routine while in Winchester. Being seen with a different whore each time they came to visit, or in Sihtric's case being seen with Ealhswith, made it less likely for someone to suspect that they preferred eachothers company.
Sihtric nodded and they separated so he could pull his tunic and armour back on and they left the room, collected Ealhswith on their way out and went to meet Osferth.
It was many hours later when the three lovers were finally able to have a private moment all together. Hours and a fair bit of danger and excitement.
Uhtred had narrowly avoided detection by a mob led by Aethelwold and some shit stain ealdorman and had been made to hide in a hole under the floorboards of Father Beocca's home.
Now they were holed up in their room at the Two Cranes and finally free to have their much overdue conversation.
Sihtric was warm, he was pleasantly drunk and had finally started to feel like his normal self.
He was jolted out of his floating headspace when Uhtred wrapped Sihtric in his arms and held him tight the moment they were alone. "I'm so sorry my love."
Sihtric froze in Uhtred's embrace, too stunned to even return it. "Lord..what?"
Uhtred pulled back, grabbed Sihtric by the shoulders and stared into his eyes. His lord's blue eyes were dark with grief. "Skade told me what happened, what she did, what Bloodhair did…" Uhtred trailed off and shot a questioning look in Finans direction.
Sihtric knew he was trying to gauge what the older man knew and he quickly answered the unasked question. "Fin knows… he saw the marks Bloodhair left…." Sihtric knew he should be horrified that the witch had told Uhtred what Bloodhair had done but all he could feel was relief that he would not have to say the words himself.
Uhtred reached up and brushed his knuckles along Sihtric's jaw next to the bruises he had there. "Why didn't you tell us?"
Sihtric could think of nothing to say in response but his face burned hot with shame, his relief short lived.
The lord continued, his hand settling on the curve of Sihtric neck "Were you ever planning to tell us?"
His continued silence was answer enough and he could no longer stand to meet Uhtred's eyes, instead focusing his gaze on a spot on the wall to Uhtred's left.
"Sihtric…."
The disappointment in Uhtred's voice was like a knife in Sihtric's gut and he struggled to find a way to defend his decision. Every reason he could think seemed idiotic in hindsight. "I told Finan!"
"Only because I walked in on you changing and saw the marks, love…" That same tone was in the Irishman's voice as when they had discussed telling Uhtred what happened. This time it wasn't just enough to get Sihtric's hackles up but made him feel downright patronised.
He felt an uncharacteristic burst of rage and ripped himself out of Uhtred's arms and backed up several steps. Why couldn't they just drop it? "Why does it matter? I did what I had to do in order to complete my mission, to keep my cover. It's over!" He knew he was yelling but couldn't control himself.
Both men reached out for him and he flinched back so hard he hit the wall with a thump. The ale he drank earlier now served to make him unstable on his feet "Don't touch me" he hissed. They both froze, twin looks of distress on their handsome faces.
The world spun and the room felt too small and it was too much and Sihtric sank to the floor and hid his head in his arms shaking. For a moment he was back there, back in that tent and all he could taste was blood and Bloodhair's cum in his mouth and the pain of his hair being pulled too tightly. He barely had time to scramble onto hands and knees before he was vomiting, his stomach rolling violently.
When he came back to himself he found his lovers kneeling a few feet in front of him, giving him lots of space. Uhtred's face was a mix of guilt and worry while Finan's was almost blank but Sihtric could see the worry shining in his brown eyes.
Finan had a damp cloth in one hand and a cup with what Sihtric desperately hoped was water in the other.
Finan was the first to speak. "Are you alright, love?" He asked as he handed over both items.
Sihtric took them before he slumped back against the wall and wiped his mouth clean before he nodded at the other men. "I'm sorry." He said before chugging the mug of water down, washing the taste of sick out of his mouth.
Now it was Uhtred's turn to speak up "No no no sweet boy. You did nothing wrong. This was my fault, it was my idea to send you there."
Sihtric was quick to shake his head in denial "If I had been more believable~"
Finan cut him off, voice firm but gentle. "It was not all your fault, Uhtred. Either of your faults. Skade was the one who put the idea in Bloodhair's head about our boy. She is to blame for what happened."
Uhtred scowled at being contradicted and Sihtric couldn't help the small smile that spread across his face despite the seriousness of the conversation. "No. Skade knew she needed you out of the way. Both of you, and she took advantage to try and drive a wedge between us. I'm sorry I didn't kill her right away, that I let her into my head."
Sihtric moved to his knees and crawled over towards his lovers and once close enough he reached out and grabbed an arm of each. This time when they reached out he nodded and let them wrap him up between them, Uhtred at his front where Sihtric could bury his face in his lord's tunic, Finan to his left with his own face pressed to Sihtric's neck. "I forgive you and I'm sorry for hiding what had happened from you, from both of you."
A warm hand cupped Sihtrics' cheek and raised his head until he could look into Uhtred's blue eyes. Gentle fingers directed his face from side to side and Sihtric knew his lord was investigating the bruises on his face more closely. His eyes snapped over Sihtric's shoulder and must have met Finan's "What else?"
Finan kept his face close to Sihtrics shoulder as he answered and his beard tickled his neck with each word. "Bruises on his hips, scratches down his back and a nasty looking bite on the back of his neck. Is uncomfortable in his saddle too."
The last caused Uhtred's face to twist in anger and his eyes went sharp and focused. The confirmation that Sihtric had been touched in such an intimate and brutal way.
Sihtric reached up and smoothed out the lines between his lover's eyes, trying to reassure him that he was not broken. "I'm sore but nothing is damaged."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
Sihtric shook his head, he was done talking, for now "No, I just want to sleep, held between you." His mind was slowing down and the exhaustion was creeping in. His sleep the last few nights had been plagued by memories and guilt and missing the other men and he was tired.
There would need to be much more talking to repair what had been strained between them but for now they disrobed down to their small clothes and cuddled up on the bed and went to sleep.

Children of The Unbroken | Preview
Tumblr media
I am currently working on a sequel of my recently finished fix, Songs of The Unbroken, which I am uncreatively calling: Children of the Unbroken. To get an idea of who will be interested or this OFC & Aethelstan/Osbert focused fic here's a preview of what to come! If you'd like to be tagged when this releases please let me know!
Asger smiles as he sees Aethelstan coming down the docks, "There he is, Aethelstan the No One," The two boys chuckle as Aethelstan pulls Asger in for a big, brotherly hug, "Next time I see you, there will probably be a crown on your pretty head."
"Next time I see you, your hunting better not be shit," His comment gets Asger to let out a big laugh, "I will miss you."
"Try not to get caught humping Osbert all over the place," Asger mutters jokingly, making Aethelstan snort as the hug breaks.
"Try not to have any more children, your wife needs a break."
"Don't tell him that, I like having a lot of grandchildren," Ealhswith scolds teasingly, getting Aethelstan to chuckle as she pulls him in for a hug and gives the boy a kiss on his head, "You are going to do wonderfully."
"Thank you, Ealhswith."
"Come on, lad, we need to go before the tide changes," His father calls from the boat, getting smacked by his wife a second later, "I am not wrong."
"Be kind."
"No, he is right, we should be on our way," Uhtred agrees, stepping off the boat, "Aethelstan, are you ready?"
Aethelstan looks back at the boat, at all those waiting on him, and nods yes, "As I'll ever be."

The Princess & The Hacker
Hacker! Sihtric x Sex Worker! Ealhswith (Modern AU)
Chapter (1): The Ice Cream Shop
(A/N): Hello there, lovelies!
Excuse the very idiotic title, and I also want to put a disclaimer that this is one of of my first time writing a character x character fic, and I hope you won’t hate it!
I also want to thank @volvaaslaug, who has helped me a bit through the initial creation of this fic and who has heard all my annoying talks about this pairing, so special thank you to you (and I hope you won’t regret not lowering your expectations!).
I do think that there’ll be more chapters, if you like it, so please make sure to let me know so that I can see if people are interested about sequel!
Feedback is always welcome, in any way shape and form: it makes my heart beat stronger and my fingers write faster
SUMMARY: When Eahlswith is a victim of a revenge porn scheme, she is given a rather interesting contact, an hacker, that might solve all her problems, and do much more.
WORDS: 4,3 K
WARNINGS: Mention of Sex Work, Revenge Porn, Sex, Mention of Past Child Abuse, Hacker, Incorrect Techonology Knowledge.
Tumblr media
Ealhswith had thought that that day wouldn’t have been different from the previous one.
And the one before that.
It’d be just another client, a simple lousy fuck she’d fake enjoying for the sake of finishing early and go back home earlier so that she could work a bit more on her final thesis and then go to bed to a nice time.
The dude hadn’t been the best of her clients for sure, excessively rough.
Although she was a professional in the sex industry, this didn’t mean that she wanted to be tossed out like a doll.
Just buy a plastic one, if that’s what you like.
It’d be cheaper.
And when the he had officially finished, he had been even more horrible to her, insisting that the agency for which Ealhswith worked would have received the money, and not her.
Which was an option, but this way she wouldn’t have had any kind of tip and seeing all the effort she had done to make that prick raise…
… she felt like she deserved it.
But she was already a bit late on her own time plan and she had just flipped the guy off in her mind, pushing her clothes quickly on and setting up a reminder on her phone for the agency to have them blacklist the guy so that he wouldn’t harass any of the other girls.
She also insisted that he hadn’t paid her, yet, preferring to settle it with the agency.
So, they had to torment him in case he didn’t pay by the end of the week.
She was thankful for the agency, although they were quite tough and took most of her earning, she felt more comfortable, since they’d run check on the clients before sending the girls and were some kind of legalized organization, which meant that she paid taxes but she didn’t risk getting arrested.
And the agency was very private about both towards the clients and both towards the girls and the boys working for them, which was great because although Ealhswith wasn’t ashamed of her work, she didn’t want her family to discover it.
She had started with modelling, but then moved quickly on the sex industry since it’d get her enough money to continue on studying and keep her apartment, meanwhile she finished her studies, without having to weight on her family, since they already had their own problematics.
Many who had discovered her profession had commented about why she couldn’t have a normal job, like a bartender or a waitress, but the truth was that those jobs didn’t make enough money for her to take care of everything around her and involved much more groping than many thought.
And if she had to be groped on a daily basis, she preferred to be paid for it.
In the end, it was just a job like another.
And this meant that she didn’t tolerate any disrespect on her job.
So, when the client of that afternoon had texted her, right when she had come back from a small trip to the grocery store for some comfort food, she had been ready to tell him that he had to contact the agency to set up another problem and this number was to be used only after having set up the appointment.
But she had been soon horrified  to discover that he hadn’t meant to book another appointment, but he instead had sent her a video and for a moment she had thought he had sent it to the wrong number.
And then she had downloaded it and played it.
And she had been happy to have closed the door behind her before.
It was a video of her… and him… doing what they had done that afternoon.
And her entire life fell down onto her, heavily.
He must have set up an hidden camera to record her, and she hadn’t checked since she had thought that the agency wouldn’t have allowed something like this to happen.
She had never heard any of her colleagues comment about such a situation.
And then another message had come up.
A blackmailing one.
‘Let’s meet again and this time free and if I am satisfied, I won’t share this on the whole internet’.
Her heart sunk because although he had no idea who she truly was, it was her face, the one in the video and although it wasn’t anything more than a badly made amateur movie, it would have ruined not only her career had it been published, but also her life.
Her parents would have disowned her.
She had tried to calm down the man, already feeling her heartbeat increase at the thought of that video being sent to any other people, but the man confirmed that she was the only one who had received it…
… and would remain the only one, had she allowed him to take advantage of her.
Something that she refused to do.
But had she truly any chance to refuse him?
A thing such as this could ruin a normal person’s life, but it would have been so much worse for her, since she was sure that if this got out, it would have tainted her image, not only in everyone’s eyes but also in agency’s ones.
The agency wanted their workers to have a clean and discreet façade and a video like that might have ruined that.
She hadn’t known what to do, who to talk to.
She didn’t know how to handle all of this.
She hadn’t so much technic knowledge to know whether this treat was true or not.
And eventually she has settled on calling Christine, a fellow friend who worked also in the escorting industry something that made her think she might understand and be discreet about it.
But she hadn’t certainly expected what Christine had told her after knowing about the blackmail.
“…it happened to you too?!” she seemed almost not surprised that such a thing was possible and then went on explaining that she had something similar happening to her, with a client taking photos of her meanwhile she was in the bathroom, also claiming to publish them in case she didn’t comply everything he asked of her “… sadly it is much more common than you might think”.
“But… I thought… the agency would run some checks and…” she was panicking, but the knowledge that someone else had been in the same situation helped her quite a bit.
Christine insisted on explaining much more as she came over to Eahlswith’s house, something for which she was thankful, not wanting to be alone in such a moment, and Christine was quite a relief, explaining fully her story and how scared she had been, but she had managed to solve it as she had passed Ealhswith a phone contact.
‘… he is a hacker… a good one’ she explained, calmly since Ealhswith was looking like a frightened animal “… he took care of my problem, after a girl from the agency heard about it. He is clean and not too expensive, but most importantly he does the job amazingly”.
‘Is it… is it seriously this common?’ she asked softly to her friend, once she had come down from the scare.
‘Oh sweetie, don’t you ever browse porn sites?’ a tight expression of annoyance appeared on Christine’s face ‘… revenge porn is the literal most popular shit on there, sadly’.
The following day, after assuring her blackmailer that she agreed to his ‘deal’ she had come to see the hacker that Christine had suggested her, coming to stop at a small apartment, the place where Sthric, the hacker’s name, had told her to meet him.
She had almost expected something more… sketchy, although Christine had explained her that he was ‘one of the good guys’.
But that apartment looked quite cozy and small, although it seemed every inch of an ex-fratboy’s mansion, with a few decorations hanging from a small balcony, that looked horribly misplaced, but she thought that the last thing she could do was comment on his choosing in exterior design.
She moved to the door, having been told to ring the doorbell and ask for Sihtric, but she didn’t need to do much, because right after the doorbell had been rung, a tall guy was in front of her, looking very much unlike the nerdy hacker she had expected.
He looked actually handsome and for a moment she doublechecked the address, but it was right and the guy sent her a quick look examining her, before muttering a tight:
‘… you must be Ealhswith’ the way he spoke was measured and attentive, as if he didn’t get many chances to talk, but his voice had a pretty sound to, definitely reassuring ‘… can we walk a bit, meanwhile we talk about your problem? My house suddenly is… full’.
The way he said it told Ealhswith that he wasn’t in the slightest happy of that situation.
She just nodded, surprised by the fact that he didn’t look further than her face, focusing his gaze onto his own shoes.
That was strange since she knew for sure that men whenever they were informed of her profession wouldn’t stop looking at her body as if they could already see her naked.
The previous night she had sent Sihtric a small text, explaining him her situation, wanting to know whether he would be able to solve her problem or not, to which he had answered that he’d have to see and preferred to talk with her about it, if she was free the following day.
She had expected the ‘come on’s and some flirting pick-up lines, but he had just stayed professional, not saying a word more than he needed.
Something that was echoed with the way he moved, carefully, almost as if he wasn’t used to his body’s shape, having suddenly grown into it in one night.
They had moved onto the road, him moving by her side, with a lengthy distance, so that she could have her own privacy but at the same time, she couldn’t help but have this feeling that he was observing her, although Sihtric kept his eyes on the ground
Something she was used to.
But Sihtric seemed attentive not to be caught.
“… I was on a job…” she didn’t know why she felt suddenly ashamed of admitting that she worked as an escort, although she wasn’t for sure embarrassed of it.
But she hadn’t said much, if not nothing, to anyone that wasn’t in her same business, so suddenly speaking about it made her nervous, although she didn’t have nothing to hide.
“… a client took a video without my permission of us…” was she seriously blushing about it?
“… do you know with what he might have taken it?”.
She was glad for Sihtric’s technical question and not focusing on her ‘job’, but she was extremely worried of answering negatively, thinking it might have been important, so she simply shoook her head, adding:
“I do think that he had a secret camera, since he pushed his phone on the bedside table to check the hour…” she explained trying to remember the previous afternoon, as she scanned the room in her memory “… but I didn’t notice anything”.
“Technology sadly has become more and more discreet…” explained Sihtric “… so sadly I don’t blame you for not noticing that something was wrong”.
And although she hadn’t realized it, what he said made her feel a bit less guilty for the thing that had happened, the previous afternoon.
“… can I see the video?” this certainly got her to blush “… just to see if I can detect the model of the camera”.
Easlwith nodded, although she couldn’t help but be a bit skeptic about it.
Was he doing it because he needed it, or he wanted to try to catch the glimpse of some free porn?
Still she showed it to him, without the audio, and again Sihtric surprised her with simply checking the first scene, involving a simple exchange of curtesy between her and a client, and then paused the video
“… it is a camera, but nothing professional, which will make it easy to track down” he explained softly, before he asked if he could take the phone in his hands getting out his own and for a moment Ealhswith was scared shitless that he would have forwarded it to his own phone, but Sihtric simply clicked an app on his own phone, where a list of technology materials appeared and he searched through them, finding one and then pushing a few more buttons.
And Ealhswith didn’t understand much, although she thought she was good with her own computer, but Sihtric seemed to do it like it was the most common thing.
As if it was something that he definitely did daily, quickly clicking a few more apps, eventually settling himself up in what looked like somebody’s else computer and then with a click the video disappeared from her phone.
And Sihtric closed all the apps he had opened, before muttering as he dragged lazily his thumb on the screen as if it calmed him:
“I should have finished with this” and only five minutes had passed “… I am not sure that he doesn’t have copies saved on external pieces, but I have installed a virus in case he try to download them in the computers that will immediately delete them and will threaten of denouncing him to the police”.
Ealhswith truly didn’t know what to say, unable to grasp the fact that that thing that had been truly bothering her from last night, making her panic completely and worry for the worst was now… solved and finished.
And she’d never have to hear about that asshole.
Sihtric nodded, scratching lightly the back of his head, almost as if he didn’t know what to say, eventually again settling on his phone, as a notification appeared, and he simply shook lightly his head, although a small smirk appeared on his face.
A small handsome smirk.
“… how much… how much do I have to pay you?” she asked already ready for whatever sum might come her way.
Although she got paid quite well, she knew that hackers undoubtedly risked so much that they got paid quite well for doing it, but as Sihtric finally raised his head to meet her eyes, he simply shook his head.
“… don’t worry about it”.
She had expected him to ask a big sum of money, maybe enough that she would have to maybe consider pawning a few of her family jewels.
She had expected him to ask of being paid in a natural way, asking for her body in exchange for having saved her ass.
But she certainly hadn’t expected him to simply dismiss it as if he hadn’t probably committed a few federal crimes to avoid a revenge porn vide of her getting out of some asshole’s phone.
“Se… serio… seriously?” she now felt like the quiet one, as Sihtric did nod his head, almost as if this was the usual thing, and he put again the phone in his pockets, giving her back her own one, meanwhile she wondered where the trick was.
Had he saved a copy of the video on his phone?
Did he expect her to fall in love with him, after saving her as some kind of modern Cinderella?
Men, no matter what, always wanted something from women.
They thought that simply because they paid for them of paid things for them, they owned them and they could do whatever they wanted with them, no matter that they were in 2019 and there was a Third Wave Intersectional Feminism that worked towards erasing that concept.
So, Sihtric couldn’t be different.
She knew it
“… actually…” here comes the advances and the requests “… there is an ice cream place nearby, you can offer me an ice cream there, if you feel like you owe me something”.
She was surprised and not solely because of the fact that he wanted eat ice cream in full winter, but she hadn’t ever been treated with such kindness in and outside of her line of work by a man.
And she couldn’t help but be somehow fascinated by it, almost as if she was walking on a tightrope and although it was dangerous, it fascinated her with the beautiful view that it offered, two mismatched eyes holding a shyness in them that locked in everything they might have said.
She hadn’t had a big crush on everybody since for ever, but she couldn’t deny that Sihtric certainly was an interesting type.
And yet she wouldn’t have fallen for the knight in shining armor.
She didn’t trust those in the slightest..
But she was undoubtedly curious about what made the man in front of her.
“… then show me the way to the ice cream shop”.
The ice cream shop was cutsie place where she hadn’t certainly thought of meeting the smart hacker, his black clothes completely mismatched with the colorful place which Ealhswith appreciated.
There she was finally able to breath as she realized she was free.
She wouldn’t have been blackmailed anymore for that video.
And she wouldn’t have risked her whole career disappearing just because some man decided that he wanted more than she allowed.
… and it was all thanks to the dork in front of her playing around with his spoon in the ice cream cup he had chosen.
His cheeks were a bit brightened by the presence of sugar now in his blood, although he had already talked a bit during their trip to the ice cream parlor, alongside her.
And strangely not about her line of work.
Ice cream had been the main topic and almost as if they hadn’t just met each other that morning, he had teased her for liking vanilla, meanwhile she defended her beloved flavor with all heart, insisting that although it might have been plain… it never disappointed.
‘… you almost convinced me’ he uttered lightly, with a bright smile and for a moment she had thought of having witnessed a miracle, something that had probably taken all the energy he had in his own body, because he had stopped talking there and then.
She had offered the ice cream, and he had welcomed gladly the gesture, already choosing the flavors with big eyes of a child that had been denied a treat for so long.
And that was when she understood that he had also known poverty.
If not something worse.
But she hadn’t asked anything about it.
They had sat down in a corner, as Sihtric moved like he could map out this entire place with his own eyes closed and she followed him calmly, settling herself up in front of him, as she herself started munching on the top of the straw in her milkshake.
Vanilla flavored, indeed.
Again Sihtric seemed to want to shrink in himself again, and some part of Ealhswith, a math major with a pedagogy course in her system, couldn’t help but think that it must have been some gesture that he had started doing in infancy and kept on doing as a coping mechanism.
A defense mechanism.
“… I don’t think I have said it” she commented as a few of the last clients move outside, giggling happily “… but thank you for doing what you did, I truly appreciate it”.
“… it was a pleasure” although she didn’t notice any change in his voice, but he seemed almost to perk up at the comment, almost as if he hadn’t expected it.
“… and thank you for not judging me… I know that what I do isn’t the best…” she didn’t know why she had to say that, but all her life she had felt like she was guilty of something, although she had never admitted it.
She was comfortable having sex with men, simply for money and she was comfortable with knowing that, but strangely she had always felt like this should have made her feel guilty of some obscure and horrible secret.
… and it had indeed horridly impacted her thoughts and mental health, although she refused to admit it.
“… listen I have a friend who is a sugar baby, so believe me, I don’t judge you, in the slightest” his tone was low key calm, but there was sprinkle of humor in his mouth, not against her but she couldn’t help but feel a bit calmer… and more at ease “… I am glad to have helped you”.
“Can I… can I ask you what programs you used? To delete the image… ” the question was both  out of curiosity and both because you wanted to be sure that the photo hadn’t been simply hidden or such, although you were relieved by the fact that that asshole didn’t have it anymore on his phone, you didn’t want any traces to have been left on Sihtric’s phone “… I don’t know much about computers, although I did a course or two…”.
And she was low key impressed by Sihtric’s ability.
“… oh it’s mostly through remote control it’s a…” and he seemed truly surprised when she named a computer program for it, but it wasn’t the ‘my male ego was wounded by your comment my sweet maiden’ surprise.
It was honest surprised.
Almost as if he seemed a child happy of having someone who wanted to play with him.
“… you have certainly done more than one course to know that name” he mumbled “… didn’t you think about solving the problem on your own?”.
He seemed truly enthralled by Ealhswith’s knowledge and she blushed under that mismatched and intense stare, almost unwanted and uncontrolled, as if he hadn’t noticed he was staring at her that strongly.
“… I just… I know the basilar things, not the… you know…” and she lowered her voice with a conspiratorial tone “… hacker stuff”.
He giggled at that comment, a truly boisterous laugh that made her smirk a bit.
And he then proceeded to explain to her what he had done, the honesty in his tone confirming the truth behind his words, but also the way he explained it to her, was extremely proper and as if he knew all about those things.
Showing her that he truly knew his job.
‘… how do you know all this stuff?’ she had once asked him in the middle of his explanation, and he had seemed almost ashamed of it, lightly backing away as if he was scared to show himself, having taken an uncertain forward step.
‘… internet’ he simply stated, but Eahlswith sure it wasn’t the entire truth.
But didn’t push further.
‘… what about you?’ he tried to shift the attention away from himself “... interested in computer sciences?”.
“Kind off… although… I actually study math” she explained “… I want to become a teacher… I always… I always had this horrible… horrible math teacher. He always said that girls… girls weren’t logical enough to study math… and little eight-year-old me wanted desperately to prove him wrong”.
A soft smile appeared on Sihtric’s face at that, almost as if he had been told the same and could relate to that.
“… he seems like a very horrible teacher”.
“I don’t want any girl to feel like they don’t have a chance to learn math, simply because they aren’t logical enough” she muttered tightly “… I want them to believe in themselves”.
“That’s very very cool”.
Sihtric’s tone was honest and impressed.
She blushed a bit, realizing about how much she had blabbered about her life to a complete stranger, although he had been the first one to listen without adding anything or any judgement which made him easy to talk to.
But Ealhswith wasn’t truly convinced about his intentions.
But the atmosphere grew much more relaxed and calmer, and by the end she was finished with her milkshake, just as Sihtric had ordered one of his own.
She couldn’t help but almost dread the thought of leaving him behind, although she didn’t have any other reason to stay.
She wanted to honestly to try to make him stay longer, maybe invite him out.
But men weren’t much different among themselves and in the end when they discovered what she truly did, they’d try to make her to stop and then fetishize her situation till it got ‘too boring’, discarding them with the excuse of ‘not being pure enough’ for a true relationship.
Good enough.
She had gone through it multiple times when she was younger, and then she had stopped dating.
And she didn’t want to ruin the nice image of Sihtric she had in her mind.
“… I have to go…” she commented in the end, knowing that she had to send the part of her thesis to her relator before tonight.
But her body didn’t seem to cooperate instead pushing itself to remain seated in front of Sihtric, who raised his head surprised before again his gaze became focused on everything but her.
“… I do understand it” he replied, and then he seemed to have an almost conflict with himself, before he bit down roughly on his lip, taking a decision “… I… I teach at a small course… on computers… nothing truly illegal, but if you are interested in deepening this I… you have certainly the brain for it”.
She was full on blushing now and she didn’t know why she nodded, but she did.
And now strangely she had a reason to see that strange hacker again.
And her heart fluttered at that.
And she wasn’t sure it was a good thing.

She watched attentively the conversation going on between Sihtric and the blonde girl.
Or it was better to say that she spied the conversation between the two.
A blonde girl with the whole new ‘age look’, comprehended with a facial tattoo of a half-moon on her forehead, with what looked and Ealhswith hoped was henna, since it was colored.
And if it wasn’t, Ealhswith, personally, would have undoubtedly wanted her money back from the tattoo artist.
But maybe she was simply acting on her idiotic jealousy.
Something that had no reason to exist since she wasn’t in a relationship with Sihtric.
And it was the last thing she needed.
Although it was the first thing she wanted for herself.
But she couldn’t deny the obvious uncomfortableness shown by Sihtric, and you slowed your movements, meanwhile you collected your belongings, rearranging your backpack a few times, before you eventually noticed that the Sihtric looked like he could use an help.
And faking of getting closer to the projector where a few slides were still going, she moved closer to hear better what they were talking about, since the blonde had stormed in, right after Sihtric had finished his lesson.
Eahlswith had actually been attending his informatic lessons both because she had been harboring a crush on the black-haired boy, but more importantly because she found them interesting.
Almost as much as she found adorable the man holding them.
Sihtric wasn’t an imposing teacher and he seemed much more an interesting life motivator, explaining the set-up of computers and encouraging his students through problem solving for  suggesting to use that approach for everyday situations, other than the ones they went through at lessons.
She honestly enjoyed computer science and knowing Sihtric she was always able to exchange a few words like a true teacher’s pet, meanwhile ‘the teacher’ blushed adorably and explained rambling on about the concept and what she might be interested in, adding a few websites where she might find some more info.
He was always open and attentive to everything people had to ask him, although he seemed shy most of the time.
But whenever he was surrounded by computers, he seemed at complete ease.
And he smiled so prettily…
Ok, she had to stop daydreaming about him.
She had promised herself not to delve further in that crush she had.
And that was what she was doing.
Even more when she casually listened in to his discourse with the pretty blonde.
“… for the last time! I won’t hack in Brida’s computer for you!” shouted loudly Sihtric, enough to startle even Ealhswith, something definitely unlike his soft-spoken character, and immediately an ashamed blush coated his full cheeks as he lowered his voice “… why would I even do that?”.
“… because I’ll pay you?” suggested the blonde girl, raising a light eyebrow at him as if to say ‘are you serious, dude?’ “… c’mon, Sihtric, I know that you don’t mind doing this for Finan, so pretty please, be a sweetheart and hack in Brida’s computer from me, so that I can see if she has gotten me anything for our anniversary”.
Oh.
Oh.
Shit.
Was Ealhswith a weirdo if she had just taken a breath of relief at knowing that the blondie had already a girlfriend?
“You can ask her” shot back Sihtric, as he moved to collect his own things, moving to switch off the projector “… you know… talk with her… like real people do”.
“Do I look like the type that cares about what ‘real people would do’?” replied sassily the girl, moving to push herself in front of him, to stop from leaving and Ealhswith couldn’t help but almost intervene, mostly because Sihtric seemed truly panicked, but he quickly ducked to the side of her lithe body.
“… she’ll get pissed to see you probing around in her computer, even if I am the one doing it” replied tightly Sihtric, switching off the projector and switching on the light, making Ealhswith continue her snooping faking her interest for her phone.
“… better!” replied blondie, a smart smirk on her face, her mouth becoming a soft shape, a sensual expression on her pretty face, as her light eyes shone with the artificial light of the only lampshade in the room “… when she is angry, sex is amazing”.
Ok, she had to intervene, because Sihtric looked so red that he might as well have been a few minutes from passing out.
“… Sihtric!” she called out, pushing herself to the side of blondie, who shot her an annoyed look and opened her mouth, probably ready to retort that ‘she was interrupting serious business’ “… we better hurry up or they’ll give away our reservation”.
Thank God, Sihtric’s face was shaped to normally be expressionless, so no surprise at her excuse appeared on his face, making her words effectively the truth in front of the other girl’s eyes.
“Oh” was the only thing blondie was able to utter, her mouth curling in a kitten-like expression, as she shot a ‘I-know-what-you-did-last-summer’ look at Sihtric, taking in Ealhswith and a shiver of uneasiness fell down her spine, as she wondered whether she might have recognized her as a sex worker.
The fear of being outed as such was a dear company of Ealhswith, having happened much more than she had thought when she had first started.
At first it mostly happened, when she was on ordinary habits and although no man would have straight up approached her in a supermarket with his family in toll.
But they certainly smirked like they held some kind of power over Ealhswith for their knowledge.
And those were the moments were in which she felt the dirtiest.
Although she had no reason to, because she tried to hold her head high in each moment, or self-pity would have completely destroyed her.
“… didn’t know you had a date” commented the girl, as she swiftly shifted her eyes from her to Sihtric, an obvious show of wanting to tease him further, but she quickly brought him closer to her with a teasing smirk straight up to the girl.
“… and you are ruining it” she shot back, knowing pretty well that when people were put up with their annoyingness they had to eventually back off.
Although they looked to be enjoying it as much as blondie.
But she eventually raised her hands as a sign of surrender, shaking her head, although her own mission didn’t seem to be finished, as she moved a small card towards Sihtric, with an IP address on it.
That you took, before Sihtric, could and threw away, somewhere in the small room that Sihtric rented in the local oratory, since he knew the priest that worked there, being’ a friend of a friend’ as he had told her, as soon as he had noticed her weirded out look at the whole place, at the first lesson she had attended.
‘I was just worried that I’d be set on fire if I walked in’ she had retorted, stealing a small look from Sihtric, and the man himself had commented that ‘if my friend Uhtred can walk in, so can you, believe me’.
“I’ll leave you to it” blondie’s smile was now more of circumstance as she moved out of the way with a swagger in her step, almost as if she had been wounded by the words of Ealhswith and was now redoubling her flare attempts to impress everyone on her walk.
“… thanks” uttered Sihtric once she was out of earshot, scratching his neck, as his entire body did again that futile attempt at appearing much smaller than it truly was “… Skade is a rough type, we call her ‘the witch’ among us”.
“That seems like a cool nickname truly” she returned loudly “… and you are welcome, I was worried that you might magically transform in a tomato, seeing your red face and unfocused stare”.
“I blush that much, don’t I?” shot back loudly Sihtric, as he sucked on his tongue, a mute sound escaping his mouth as he fought to keep it in.
And you fought to keep in your thought of how adorable Sihtric truly looked.
Time to change the subject.
“… oh by the way” she then moved to get something out of her bags, showing Sihtric a small wrapped up gift she had bought with herself to that lesson “… I thought of you, when I saw it”.
Sihtric looked truly surprised, and although many faked being truly surprised by some gifts, there was some kind of childish innocence in the way he took in the gift, leaving it in Ealhswith’s hands for a moment longer than it was proper and the woman quickly had to push it onto his hands, gently closing them around the wrapped object.
“You shouldn’t have” and he meant it.
He didn’t understand in the slightest why you felt like giving him that small thoughtful piece.
“… oh, don’t worry, I actually… I was actually at a used books market a few days ago and I thought that you might have liked the theme” Sihtric didn’t look less convinced “… ok I’ll admit it, I mostly bought it because I want to read it too, but before… I need to know if it historically accurate”.
The joke was a bit strained, but Sihtric’s curiosity got the best of him and he opened quickly the present, being careful with the paper, which was something that was strange for his big hands, but somehow the man had never acted like he truly knew of his strength.
Guarding it attentively, almost as if he was some kind of Hulk, ready to explode.
Almost as if he hid something.
But she tried not to push him for it, it was obvious that he felt uncomfortable still so she tried to keep herself smart and sharp around him, extremely attentive at what she said and the way she acted.
But at the same time, she couldn’t deny that she felt comfortable with him.
It was as if they were dancing on opposite sides of a tightrope, one wrong step and they would have fallen out, but at the same time they both played this game.
She had found the book meanwhile she was browsing a used books bookstore for some university books, since they were usually cheaper there, and she had found the book interesting.
She had immediately linked it to Sihtric and his lessons, when he had explained that Ada Lovelace, mathematician and daughter of Lord Byron, had been the first programmer of the whole history.
Before electrical computers were ever born.
And she had thought about Sihtric when she had found a book about her life, already adding the money for it as she paid for the books she had found, thinking about how happy Sihtric would have been of receiving it.
And right now, as he looked painfully awkward and uncomfortable, she couldn’t help but think that maybe she had thought wrong.
In the end there wasn’t much she knew about Sihtric.
She knew what he let go: that he was a shy hacker, who liked hosting lessons about computer science, being an awesome teacher and interested in knowing more and more.
And he certainly wasn’t somebody who backed up from a challenge, no matter what.
She might not have known much about him, but she admired him.
Sihtric finally managed to unwrap the wrapping paper, and although the moments before had been painfully awkward, his eyes shone with happiness as he took in the name of the book, definitely childish excitement appearing in his face, as for a moment his eyes met hers.
And he seemed truly happy.
“… how did you…” he was a bit of too taken aback to answer properly and talk, and she couldn’t help but smirk lightly at that cute embarrassment coating his face “… Gosh, this is honestly amazing”.
“I do hope that you know how to read…” she shot back, trying to diffuse the heavy air that now was set between them “… because if not there was an adorable books with drawings and…”.
“I do like this one” he laughed, as he turned the book between his hands “… but you shouldn’t have”.
“You let me come here for free lessons, so don’t worry, I do think that this makes us equal, in paying and such…” she said, knowing that although many paid to attend Sihtric’s lessons, he had insisted on her not paying him, since she was a university student.
‘And that gives you a special discount’ he had joked, one of the rare times it had happened, and Ealhswith had been honestly surprised by the fact that he hadn’t tried the ‘you get a discount because you are pretty’ or ‘you get a discount if you get me off’.
Which was putting her even more on edge.
She liked this guy, although she wouldn’t let it get far.
And he hadn’t still shown what he wanted to do with her.
Because every man wanted something from her.
She just had to figure our what Sihtric wanted.
“… you shouldn’t have” repeated Sihtric, but he still set the book down, as he searched for her eyes to express his true gratefulness and she was the one left embarrassed and uncomfortable, unsure of what to say.
“It’s a small thing” she muttered “… and don’t worry, I actually saved up this week since my car decided to break and I got to use the subway and such. Certainly, saved up on the gasoline…”.
And Sihtric’s eyes had become then focused and she had detected something that had made a shiver fell down on her face.
“… you take the subway tonight?” he asked, as he started to also get ready “… want some company?”.
And then he had finally done that misstep.
“I can take care of myself” she simply answered, not knowing truly how much where those words came from “… don’t worry, I have done this for a very long time, I don’t need any knight in his shining armor coming to…”.
“I didn’t mean it that way” Sihtric took a small step back, and Ealhswith felt guilty.
She had been trying to desperately push him in a far corner, but she hadn’t had much territory and much to work on to start, since Sihtric didn’t seem to have any of the flaws that made other men act like true idiots for her.
He didn’t think that being a sex worker was only something ‘fun’ and neither he had a ‘convert the whore’ complex.
But he might have had a ‘knight in shining armor’ complex.
And yet she immediately felt bad for accusing him that way.
She must have sounded like a hysterical bitch…
“I actually didn’t mean to imply anything about you not being able to take care of yourself…” he explained and as much as Ealhswith hated that his words sounded desperately true “… I just wanted to spend some time with you”.
Shit.
Shittest shit.
She didn’t know if she preferred him as misogynist asshole or as a genuinely interested human being.
Either way she was thoroughly screwed.
Which was something she should have been used since she did it as a job.
“Oh” that was all that she was able to utter.
“I must have sounded like a creeper…” and as soon as he had opened up about himself, he was back to that defensive stance he always had, making Ealhswith inevitably feel guilty for her behavior, but words wouldn’t rush out of her mouth “… I just… Gosh, you probably have things to do…”.
“I have a thesis to avoid” she commented, finally having regained her voice, able to word out the phrase because it regarded something mundane on which she could find her focus on “… so… I’d like to spend more time together, if you… I mean if you don’t have better things to do”.
“I actually have a date”.
Shittest shit, again.
“… understood” she replied, unable to think about the fact that maybe she had sounded too eager for everything, which evidently made him uncomfortable, even more if he had a partner on the side.
“… but I have a bit of free time before it, if you want” he explained softly, almost if he hadn’t noticed Ealhswith’s surprise.
As if he hadn’t just given the worst news ever.
And she seriously needed to stop crush on him.
“I have to take the red line” she sputtered out, again focusing on mundane things instead of the fact that the guy she had been crushing on for a few weeks had a partner, probably somebody who made him smile enough to make his beautiful mismatched eyes shine and that made him feel at ease.
Ealhswith had truly been an idiot for thinking that her, a sex worker with a problematic relationship with math could be his type.
She barely liked herself.
He certainly couldn’t have liked her.
“Oh, I also have to take it” he commented, completely not noticing her uneasiness “… till the last stop so we can share our busy time for a bit”.
She simply nodded, pushing herself slightly away from him.
The fact that he said he wanted to spend time with her didn’t mean that he necessarily meant that in a romantic way.
In the end he might have found interesting their convos, but they didn’t chatter together daily.
They didn’t know anything about each other.
Although Ealhswith could have sworn of having confessed him everything, he hadn’t opened up that much with her, and there must have been a reason behind it.
A partner seemed a pretty obvious reason.
Gosh, why hadn’t she thought before about that?
Still, although she was painfully awkward by the recent discovery, she tried her best to have a polite conversation with Sihtric and she was glad when their talk moved onto the lessons: if she was enjoying them and if she had checked out the sources and books he had suggested, having searched a few links between math and computer science for her.
And then moving onto what had happened to her car, something that did help her focusing on one thing at the time and ground her on more terrene thoughts.
Even more when she discovered that the tube of the red line would have had a delay of thirty minutes, making her wait in its hallway till the entire thing was set up and basically rebuilt again for technical problems that had brought themselves up at the last minute.
Leaving her to stand in a painfully awkward conversation with Sihtric, the man seeming quite annoyed by the last-minute problematic, but not enough for somebody who had a nice date.
And Ealhswith’s noisy ass had to comment.
“… don’t you have to let your date know?” she hadn’t meant to sound noisy or bitter, but still it caught Sihtric’s attention, as his eyes set up on her, making a shiver come down her spine, with a playful intensity that made her nervous “… about the delay”.
“I do think she can wait” there was a glint of sadness in his eyes, still, although he held the tight answer.
And she thought that he might not exactly be looking forward to his date.
“… you can get a cab, if you have to go, I seriously can handle myself and my thirty minutes wait” you tried to convince him, wanting him to get away from you and at the same time to stay with you for those minutes.
To choose you over whoever he had to meet.
Although it was a horrid thing to wish.
“I don’t think that she’ll stand me up” he commented, again that blackish tone in his humor that made you feel almost as if he was teasing you withholding some knowledge.
“… never be late for a date” she chastised him, but he just shook his head.
“Let’s just say that you can never arrive late at a date in a cemetery”.
And that shook Ealhswith to the core, turning to face Sihtric.
Who instead turned his head to the ground.
“… oh”.
Couldn’t she have seriously come up with something smarter?
She was finishing a degree in math for God’s sake!
But no matter how smart or how dumb you were, love fucked everybody up.
“I am visiting my mother at the cemetery” now he seemed the one who had to babble everything up “… I do it every month, at least once, to change the flowers and check in with her, although it might sound crazy”.
Ealhswith was silent a moment too long and this was a mistake.
Because Sihtric started to ramble, distancing himself from her physically and mentally.
“… yeah, I know that what I just said might have made me sound like a creeper” he muttered, biting his lower lip, nervous and tense, enough that she couldn’t help but notice a slight tremble in her hands “… but I swear I have no bad intentions”.
“You asked me an ice cream in exchange of deleting a video that could have potentially ruined my life” she found herself muttering, finally able to reply with the doubt she had had for her whole life “… I don’t think that you are even capable of bad intentions”.
Sihtric seemed taken aback.
And Eahlswith had to ramble a bit more.
“You might have this ‘cool emo’ look but believe me I do know that you are as soft as a teddy bear, inside” she should have shut up her mouth “… you aren’t a bad guy Sihtric, although you might think you are. And believe me I do know an awful lot of bad guys”.
Dudes that thought that just because of the job you did, it was alright to call you names or take advantage of you in any way, form or shape, rendering you the shell of what you had been.
“… thank you” it was again worded as if he didn’t deserve it and it took everything in Ealhswith not to simply hug him on the spot, not because she had a crush on him or his expression was sadder than a kicked puppy.
But because he seemed like he could use a hug.
“… so I don’t find you creepy for visiting your mom” she explained softly, suddenly realizing the heaviness that had fallen between them, bringing them closer, as if they had been tied with weights around their bodies and thrown at each other.
The hit was inevitable.
“… and I am sorry to hear about your mother”.
Sihtric scratched his head, showcasing he wasn’t comfortable, but still nodded his head in an acceptance of your thoughts.
“She had a… a sickness and the troubled life that my father brought her in certainly didn’t help” again that sad smile and then he wetted his lips, and Ealhswith noticed that they were horridly chapped and she thought about getting him a lip balm.
She seriously should have considered sticking her nose in her own business.
But yet Sihtric’s confession brought her to realize he had opened up with her, something that had obviously made him feel on the short end of the stick, uncomfortable and awkward and if Ealhswith had learned anything in her line of job, it was that sharing information always required two people.
“I understand it…” she bit her own lips, trying to focus on the words of her declaration, because if she thought about them too much, she would have lost herself “… my brother, I have a younger brother, he… he kind of… he had leukemia, we found it out when he was five and from then on it was a downward road…”.
She damnably refused to face Sihtric’s face.
“He is a sweetheart and he is so so active when he isn’t in the hospital, but he has spent so much time there that… it was expensive on my family and it is the main reason why I joined the sex work world, to support myself on my own and not weight on my family… but…”.
Shit, he would have thought she was a creeper had she started to cry.
“Is he…?” instead that was Sihtric’s question, a clear sign of worry in his tone.
“No, no, he is in remission… he has been for five years, but cancer can be a bastard, can’t it?” she was choking on the words, perfect…
… she must have sounded so pathetic.
In her line of work, she wasn’t allowed to even shed a tear for herself, so the fact that she was doing it right now, made her feel like utter shit.
What would have SIhtric thought?
That she was some crazed mad woman.
“… I am glad to hear that” he said instead, and awkwardly he gained the distance she had pushed between themselves “… is it… is it alright with you if I hug you?”.
And she didn’t know why she nodded immediately, something that made her probably seem even more pathetic.
He had just confessed that his mother had died, and he was visiting her at cemetery and yet she was the one who was being hugged close.
Sihtric wrapped up in her arms, awkwardly at first, but then she also leaned in it, calmly and softly, his head lightly easing up on the crook of her neck, meanwhile she was faced with his chest, because of the height difference.
And then the subway’s natural noise appeared.
And they were startled apart, by that, red-cheeked and with their eyes on their shoes.
They entered the tube in silence, soon discovering they were alone, which made the entire background seem like the one of a post-apocalyptic movie, making them both share a hysterical laugh.
“… thank you” she commented immediately “…and sorry for being an idiot”.
“I don’t think that you are an idiot” Sihtric’s voice was as calm water before the storm, unrelenting and strong, but also calm and brewing inside “… you are one of the smartest person I know”.
“Don’t even try to start” she threatened him jokingly “… I am barely able to function”.
“… and yet you are the best human being I have ever talked with”.
The confession knocked the air out of Ealhswith and honestly her first instinct was to run the shit out of there, but she couldn’t, hence she was pushed to look at Sihtric in the face, straight up to him and not a single trace of dishonesty was marked upon his face.
And she was broken apart and undone again.
“… what is your secret, Sihtric?” her voice was barely a whisper, as she found herself moving  closer to him, a moth driven to a flame truly because no man can truly be that perfect without a skeleton in his closet.
“I might have a small crush on you” Sihtric’s comment was so honest that it definitely shattered anything that she might have known “… but you must think that I am some kind of creeper, I just… I just felt like I needed to let you know, so that you won’t feel forced to comfort me or…”.
And if there was one thing that according to Ealhswith never failed was the physical contact.
And she kissed him, since she was a mess with words.
There was a reason if she studied numbers.
And the kiss felt good, it felt much better than torturing herself with the thought of what Sihtric truly felt with her.
And he seemed to understand her, completely, as he gently moved to reciprocate the kiss, shy as he always appeared, and yet so strong and stable in himself that she anchored herself to him, almost desperately, as the kiss deepened.
And then the intercom announced her stop.
And she awkwardly separated from Sihtric, knowing that she had only a few minutes till she had to get off the subway, and that she could have used them to run away, as fast as she could, and never turn back.
But she might have acted like a coward.
And if there was one thing she wasn’t, was a coward.
“… I do know that you said you had a date, but… would you like some company after it?” Ealhswith was a mess, she was definitely appearing like a huge creeper to him “…I mean… this might… I should shut up”.
“I’d like that very much” simply replied Sihtric, moving closer to her, to kiss her lips swiftly, one more time “… never in a million years I thought that I’d get a date with you”.
“Oh, believe me, sweetie… I thought the same”.

He’s not much more than a boy, this Dane who comes to the alehouse. Ealhswith has had her share of boys who are trying to be men.
But he isn’t trying to be a man, and maybe that’s why she notices him. Even though he doesn’t call for her to fill his cup, even though he doesn’t pull her into his lap like so many men do. He doesn’t call for any of the girls or pull them into his lap. Ealhswith would swear he doesn’t even like girls if she had not seen him disappear up the stairs with Eadburga one night.
“What was he like?” she asks the other woman in the morning. “The Dane?”
“Sihtric?” Eadburga repeats.
Sihtric. A strange name. A Dane’s name.
“Yes. Him.”
Eadburga smiles. “He was…gentle.”
“Gentle?” That’s not a word many of the girls give to their patrons.
“Yes. Gentle.” She laughs. “He kept asking if I liked it. I told him if he liked it, that was good enough for me. He wasn’t satisfied with that. He wanted me to like it. I almost felt bad taking his silver.”
“You still took it, though,” Ealhswith points out wryly.
“Well of course I did—I’m not stupid!”
They both share a good laugh over that, but it makes Ealhswith wonder over this boy.
Sihtric.
She watches him whenever he comes in now, follows him with her eyes as he and his Irish friend take their seats. The Irishman is loud and boisterous where Sihtric is quiet and reserved, hiding his smiles behind his hand. Every few minutes, his eyes will flicker around the room, almost as though he’s on the lookout for something.
A girl?
No, he’s too alert, his eyes narrowed and jaw slightly clenched. He isn’t looking for something he wants.
He’s looking for danger.
She knows, because it’s the same look she had on her face after her first time, that rough deflowering that had left her surprised, scared, and ashamed. That was the moment she had realized that no one was going to take her hand and lead her gently into womanhood. No one was going to look out for her and keep her from harm. She would have to figure it all out herself.
So she did.
She sees that same learned survival in Sihtric, that same instinct to always be on your guard. It’s been years since she was that frightened young girl, but the instinct to glance over her shoulder, to take stock of possible escape routes, remains with her.
His eyes, doing another circuit of the room, land on her, and she freezes when she realizes he’s caught her staring at him.
She holds his gaze for a long moment. Then, tentatively, she offers him a smile.
To her relief, he smiles back, and he doesn’t hide this one behind his hand. She likes his smile, likes the way it lights up his whole face. She wants to see more of it, and picks up a pitcher on the pretense of filling his cup so she can talk to him.
He never takes his eyes from her, and when she reaches his table, he stands up suddenly.
Eahlswith blinks. “Would you...like more ale?”
“Yes,” he says at once. He has different colored eyes, she realizes now that she’s up close; one brown, one green. She could get lost in those eyes. She would like to.
For now, she bites back a smile, leaning over to top up his cup--which is almost full anyway.
“Will you...sit with us?” he asks, but his companion, the dark-haired Irishman, is preoccupied with Aethelgifu.
She bites back another smile. “Yes, I will.” She sets down her pitcher, sitting on the bench beside Sihtric. She notes that he waits until she’s seated before he takes his own seat, as though she were a proper lady and not an alehouse whore.
“I am Sihtric,” he says, straddling the bench so he can look at her.
She doesn’t tell him she already knows that. Instead, she tells him, “I am Ealhswith.”
“Ealhswith,” he repeats, as though he finds her name pretty. To her relief, he doesn’t ask the usual question (“Ealhswith? Like the queen? Does that mean you’ll give me a royal fuck?”) . Instead, he asks, “What does it mean?”
She laughs. “It means ‘lucky’. Or so my mother told me.” She reaches for Aethelgifu’s abandoned cup of ale, taking a sip. “And Sihtric? What does that name mean?”
“It means ‘true victory’. Or so my mother told me.”
She laughs again. “And have you had many true victories?”
He smiles, ducking his head. “The lord I serve has. And have you had much luck in your life?”
She gives a small shrug. “Some, but not as much as I would like, or else I would have as much silver as the queen I share a name with.”
He laughs at that, and she feels absurdly pleased at coaxing a laugh from him. “Your fortunes may change, you never know.”
“True,” she allows. “Who knows? Maybe I’ll really be a queen someday.”
He laughs again at that. She likes his laugh, and starts to tell him so when Eadburga appears at her shoulder, leaning down to murmur, “Your father’s here.”
All the warmth and happiness leaches out of the room as Ealhswith turns to see him standing by the entrance, that telltale unsteadiness that comes from frittering away his silver on drink all night.
She breathes deeply. He had to choose tonight, of all nights, to harass her.
“I have to speak to him,” she apologizes to Sihtric, reluctantly getting up from the bench. “I...I’ll be back. If…”
“I’ll be here,” he says quietly, his eyes searching hers.
She gives him a small, forced smile before she turns and heads for her father.
He’s not really her father, thank God. Her real father died when she was in the cradle, killed in battle. Her mother married Wulfstan when Ealhswith was still young, needing the support and protection that only a husband can offer.
She may as well have remained widowed for all the good it did her.
All the good it did them both.
Ealhswith feels her fists clench involuntarily as she comes up to Wulfstan, ignoring his leer. “I don’t have enough.”
“No? These men don’t pay you? Your cunny gone sour or something?”
She grits her teeth. “The alehouse keeps most of what I earn, and the rest goes to food and clothes--”
“What does a whore need with clothes?” he laughs. “Should I tell your mother that her fancy daughter spent all her coin on clothes and didn’t spare a thought for her poor, sick mother?”
“It’s a sad day when a man has to come crawling to an alehouse whore for money because he can’t support his own wife.”
Wulfstan’s face darkens, his hand twitching with a remarkably restrained slap.
Ealhswith’s victory is short-lived; she knows she’s going to pay for that comment, one way or another, and if not out here, it will be in her room.
Sure enough, Wulfstan grips her upper arm, steering her through the hall and to the back corridor. She hates that even here, even now, he makes her feel as frightened and uncertain as though she were a little girl again.
He opens the door to her room, shoving her inside before closing it behind him.
“Now,” he growls, “you gonna give me silver or what?”
“I told you already, I don’t have enough--”
“And that’s supposed to be my problem, is it?”
“It’s not your silver!” she shouts. “It’s mine! I earned it--”
“On your back, letting men rut into you,” he finishes for her. “Who taught you to do that, eh?”
She clenches her fists, blinking back tears of shame. “Get out.”
“Give me your silver and I will.”
“And then you’ll be back again--in a month, in a week, in a day.”
“Ealhswith,” he says loudly, using the scolding tones he’d used on her as a child, “the silver. Now.”
She clenches her fists so hard her fingernails bite into her palms, drawing blood. “No.”
She thinks she’s prepared, but she still cries out when his fist slams into her cheek, sending her reeling backwards. Wulfstan takes advantage of her momentary disorientation, pushing her face-first onto her bed. She kicks and flails and screams, even though she knows what’s going to happen, because it’s the same thing that’s been happening for years. No matter where she runs, no matter where she hides, he will always find her.
Suddenly, the weight bearing down on her is gone, and over Wulfstan’s cry of outrage, she hears, “Get off her!”
Ealhswith sits up, gaping as Sihtric sends Wulfstan skidding across the floor. Her stepfather climbs unsteadily to his feet, his eyes wide as he takes in the sight of the young Dane.
“You will never touch her again,” Sihtric says, his voice shaking with a quiet sort of fury.
An ugly grin unfurls on Wulfstan’s face. “Who’s gonna stop me? You?”
“Yes,” Sihtric says without hesitation.
Wulfstan draws himself up to his full height. Funny, Ealhswith can’t help thinking; she remembered him being taller.
“She’s only a whore.”
“And you are less than a worm.” Sihtric takes a step forward, forcing Wulfstan to press back against the wall. “Now go.”
Wulfstan opens the door, but not before pointing a quivering finger at Ealhswith. “He won’t always be here to protect you.”
“I said go,” Sihtric snaps, shoving him out the door. He closes and latches it before turning to Eahlswith. The scowl on his face melts, his eyes widening as he looks at her. “Are you alright?”
She doesn’t know how to answer that, and maybe he realizes it, because he looks down at his feet. “I had…a cruel father, too.”
She understands now. The hidden smiles, the constant glances around the room, the fury in his voice when he’d told Wulfstan he would never touch her again.
“I’m sorry,” she whispers.
He shakes his head. “He’s dead now. He can’t hurt me anymore.”
She glances at the door.
Wulfstan is still alive. He can still hurt me.
“He won’t hurt you anymore, either,” Sihtric says, and she realizes he’s followed her gaze.
“You can’t promise that,” she points out.
He considers her. “I can for tonight.” He sits slowly, carefully, on the edge of her bed. “I can stay with you. If you like. Keep you safe if he comes back.”
“Why?” she asks, disbelieving. “He’s right; I’m just a whore.”
Sihtric’s eyes harden. “You’re more than what he says you are.”
Eahlswith looks at her hands. “You don’t even know me,” she says quietly.
“I would like to.”
She bites back a smile. “You’re stubborn.”
“You have no idea.”
.
They spend all night talking. About their fathers, and their mothers, and the children they once were. He tells her that his father was a Dane with a hard heart and harder fists, and that his mother was a slave girl who died defending her son. She tells him that Wulfstan is her stepfather, that he raised her as though she were his own little girl; and as soon as she wasn’t a little girl anymore, he stopped being a father to her and became something much worse.
They talk about happier things, too. His adventures with his lord, Uhtred, and his friend, Finan. Her failed attempts at being a scullion and a laundress before she settled on being a whore.
They talk until the early dawn, when the first rays of morning light creep into her room. They’re both lying down on her bed by now, heads turned to face each other.
“Well, you were right,” she says, her voice rough from talking all night. “He didn’t hurt me again last night.”
Sihtric is quiet for a long moment. When he speaks again, he turns onto his side, looking at her fully. “What if...I stopped him from ever hurting you again?”
She gazes at him for a long moment, looking into his brown eye, and then his green. “You mean,” she says slowly, “kill him?”
He doesn’t say yes, but he doesn’t say no, either. He just looks at her, waiting.
His offer should upset her, but the truth is, it doesn’t. She’s wished death on Wulfstan more times than she can count; she’d even thought about doing it herself in the early days. Sometimes the thought still passes through her mind, when he pushes her onto her bed and makes her feel like a frightened young girl again.
If anyone deserves to die, it’s Wulfstan. Wulfstan, who took everything from her, and continues to take from her. His death is the only thing that will free her.
But it isn’t his death that gives her pause.
It’s letting Sihtric do it.
She’s only just met Sihtric; even with all that they’ve shared, even though she knows that he’s like her, that he understands, he did not even know her name before last night. How could she possibly let him do this thing for her?
“Why would you kill a man you don’t even know for a whore you just met?”
He reaches out, taking her hand in his. His hand is rough and calloused, but his touch is gentle. “I know Wulfstan, because I knew my father. And we may have just met, but I know you, because you and I are the same. I wanted my father to die, but I couldn’t do it myself. You want Wulfstan to die. I can kill him. I want to kill him. I want you to have the same freedom that I do.”
She joins her other hand with his. “If you’re sure…”
“I am, Ealhswith.”
She bites her lip. “Well, then.”
Do you know where he is now?” he asks quietly.
“No,” she says honestly. “But he can’t be far. He’ll probably come back tonight.”
“He can try.”
She lays her hand over his cheek, not knowing what else to say.
Sihtric moves his head, kissing the palm of her hand.
She can’t remember the last time a man kissed her like this; on the hand, with no expectations. She can’t remember the last time anyone offered to do something for her without wanting something in return.
And she can’t remember ever feeling this way about another person before.
.
She sleeps through the day like any other; by the time she wakes, she can’t help but wonder if last night really happened, or if it was just a dream.
She puts it from her mind until Sihtric comes to the alehouse late that night. He doesn’t speak, doesn’t smile, just gives Ealhswith a look.
She leaves the table she’s entertaining, following him to her room. He closes the door behind her, pulling something from his belt.
“He’s dead,” he says quietly, pulling a dirk from its sheath. The candlelight is low, but even by the dim light, she can see the blood on the blade. “I caught him on his way here. He’s lying in the street. I can take you to him, if you want.”
“No,” she whispers, taking the dirk from him. She turns it over in her hands, looking at the red. “I believe you.”
Wulfstan is dead.
He will never bother her again. He will never harass her for silver, he will never drive her from her home, he will never steal from her, he will never rape her again.
I am free.
She raises her eyes to Sihtric’s and sees him watching her with a wary expression, almost as though he’s afraid that she’ll suddenly regret letting him do this.
She winds her arms around his shoulders and kisses him.
She sees now what Eadburga meant, about how gentle he is. He kisses her slowly, carefully, letting her set the pace, and when she pushes him back onto her bed, climbing into his lap, he pulls back with wide eyes.
“Ealhswith, you don’t…you don’t have to—”
“I know I don’t,” she says simply, already tugging her dress over her head. “I want to.” She takes his face in her hands. “Don’t you?”
He kisses her, those rough hands holding her so gently she could cry.
He isn’t much more than a boy, this Dane. But then, he isn’t trying to be.

chapter 5 you can never really go home again
“I can be charming,” Uhtred says when Æsa asks that they let her do the talking. She can hear the smile in his voice. She’s sure if she looked at him his eyes would be dancing and she has no doubt that his charm has worked well for him before.
“It’s uncanny, really,” Finan says from behind them and Æsa rolls her eyes. Even after the day she’s had there is an ease about them that is contagious, “with women anyway. Doesn’t work so well on jealous husbands and angry fathers.”

𝕺𝖆𝖙𝖍𝖘 𝖔𝖋 𝕷𝖔𝖞𝖆𝖑𝖙𝖞||TLK Fic|| FinanxOC||Nine
Tumblr media
A/N: So, it's been a year now since I updated but finally it’s here. And I have a massive trigger warning for ya’ll. Childbirth and Death. Yes, if you recall where we were in the story you know what’s coming. Originally there was going to be more to this chapter, but I decided to leave it this one scene so you can completely skip it if you like. Tbh this topic is what blocked me so long from writing any more on this fic, but I’m hoping now I may be able to get back to updating again now that it’s over with.
Story Summary:  Tove chose to surrender rather than be killed, after Sigfried was defeated at Beamfleot, giving herself up to the mercy of the Saxons. Thanks to Finan’s intervention, her life is indeed spared and she is brought into Uhtred’s service. With the sting of defeat fresh on her tongue and her new life fighting for the Saxons secured; Tove is left wondering what tricks the Gods have in store for her next.

Births were stressful and Tove had never liked being present for them. Against her will she had been for there for birth of both her sisters and at Sigrid’s birth she’d been a panicky wreck. The other women had wanted her to help learn to bring babies into the world, but after witnessing her mother pass while birthing her other sister Astrid, Tove had been as useless as a bump on a log. Every time her stepmother had called out in pain, she’d flinched away until the adults had shooed her from the room. That had been part of the reason she hadn’t wished to be present for Igna giving birth despite her sister in law’s assurances she didn’t expect her to be in the room. Tove thanked all the Gods in Asgard that Gisela was just as understanding.
So that was how she ended up fetching Ealhswith, Abbess Hild, and the midwife when Gisela sent Stiorra to her in the night. The Lady had woken up with abnormal pains and thought the babe must be coming. When she looked back on it, Tove would wonder at the wording and whether Gisela had known something was wrong. It turned out she was in fact in labor, but instead of being called to aid the ladies Tove was to watch and care for the children. She had taken all three of Uhtred’s children to Sihtric’s house to keep them as calm as possible besides it was still the middle of the night. They never would have gotten any sleep at home had they stayed while their mother was in labor.
Instead of sleeping, Tove sat at the table in the kitchen sharpening her seax. She could have slept, Cedric had accompanied her to the house, but found herself unable to do so. Despite not being there, Tove was on edge.
“Births….,” she exhaled softly.
Loving children and in fact even secretly hoping for at least one of her own someday could not sway the anxiety which the act of bringing said children into the world brought her. Pausing in her work, Tove stared down at the blade thinking of Igna. Had she survived? Certainly, she must have, she was a hearty woman. Forcibly putting the thought from her mind, Tove was about to resume her work when she heard a creak on the stair, and she turned to find Uhtred the younger standing there.
He didn’t say anything, and Tove could see the uncertainty in him by the way he wrung the hem of his tunic in his hands. Arching an eyebrow with interest she inclined her head for the boy to join her at the table. After a few moments hesitation he scurried over and took a seat next to her which she didn’t expect, but she said nothing. Uhtred watched her without saying a word for a long time. She didn’t mind, though Tove did find the boy a tad on the weak side it did not make her dislike him. He was simply gentler than his brother or sister even and she scarcely thought Uhtred would ever make an effective warrior of the boy. Still, he was clever enough and she could appreciate that.
Finally, after what must’ve been fifteen minutes, he spoke up. “Mother will be fine.”
It was clear he was attempting to assure himself more than her. He had been too young, only two winters, when Osbert was born and so wouldn’t remember that birth. This was the first sibling he would recall being born.
“Of course,” Tove reassured.
Silence reigned again for some time. All that could be heard in the kitchen was the crackle of fire, whetstone on blade, and the steady breathing of the two occupants. Then, feeling compelled to say more, Tove sighed quietly and set her task aside to fix her gaze on Uhtred. He looked up at her with somewhat watery eyes and she saw him in that moment how her Lord saw him.
“You should not worry little Lord,” she said firmly. “Birth is a trial women must endure. Do not doubt your mother, she is strong.”
Uhtred frowned. “Strong men are still killed in battle.”
Though it was an astute observation for a five-year-old to make, it irked her instantly. This sort of wit she expected from Stiorra, but besides her Tove was used to Osbert’s utter wonder at the world and the wisdom of adults. Schooling her expression, Tove allowed a trace of amusement to show in an effort to reassure the boy.
“You are right. However, many men live as well. Your father for instance has fought many battles.” As she spoke, Tove went back to sharpening her seax.
Uhtred was quiet again clearly thinking over what she had said. When he eventually yawned and went to put his head down on the table Tove clicked her tongue in a reprimanding fashion at him. Against his weak protest that he wished to wait up with her, Tove sent him off to bed with a ruffle of his hair and a firm goodnight.
“We needn’t both be exhausted when your baby brother or sister arrives.” Said Tove lightly as Uhtred climbed the stairs.
And so, they waited, no word came during the night, nor in the morning when Tove sent for a maid from the house to cook for the children. She was after all many things, but an accomplished cook was not one of them. The children ate peacefully and then when Sihtric’s children went about their chores Uhtred and Osbert helped while Stiorra begged to braid her hair once again. As usual, Tove was unable to deny her, so the morning and early afternoon was spent with Stiorra unbraiding and rebraiding her hair. Tove did have to admit for her age she was quite good at it.
By midafternoon, Tove was starting to again feel some anxiety that they hadn’t heard anything on the Lady’s progress or condition so she sent Rypere, whose eye she could not meet, to check. He returned an hour later looking a tad bit harassed with a furrowed brow and serious mouth. She said nothing but arched a brow waiting for him to find the words and only hoping he was smart enough not to alarm the children.
“She ah…” He paused. “The Lady is resting at the moment I am told. Obviously, they would not let me in the room, but I can stay with the children if you wish to check on her.”
Nodding sharply, Tove rested a hand on Stiorra’s shoulder giving it a brief squeeze.
“Watch the boys while I go and see your mother.”
She nodded and went to see what Elflæd was doing. Stiorra occupied, Tove fixed Rypere with a serious look meeting his eye for the first time since her outburst a few days ago.
“That was all they told me I swear Lady.”
Though it was clear he was nervous otherwise Rypere would not have called her Lady. He could be relied upon to always respect her wish in forging the title at very least. His nerves caused her stomach to turn and Tove only inclined her head toward the table in a silent invitation to sit before she swept from the room.
When Tove arrived at Uhtred’s house things were too still for her liking. The other guard, a man called Aethelwulf looked quite grim as she approached but said nothing as he stepped out of her way. Tove followed his movement with a critical eye, but he said nothing as she passed into the house. Inside was much the same, Ealhswith sat at the table looking quite exhausted and she startled as Tove entered the room. For a moment she looked like a startled deer and the next the Saxon woman was throwing her arms about Tove’s neck hugging her so tightly that Tove went stiff as a board. Composing herself quickly, she pried Ealhswith off her and held the shorter woman at arm’s length with an inquisitive gaze.
“Rypere said Gisela is resting?”
“She is…she is so tired.”
“Childbirth is a lot of work,” Tove said slowly.
The Saxon gave a short shake of her head her expression becoming grave.
“I have seen it once before in my previous life,” Ealhswith said quietly as though speaking too loudly might disturb the air. “The mid wife says the child is turned the wrong way. We have been attempting to turn him, but.” And Ealhswith shook her head. “Gisela has been resting the last half hour or so. She is exhausted Tove. Perhaps… if you’d like to see her?”
Tove set her jaw and nodded which prompted Ealhswith to lead her up the stairs to Gisela and Uhtred’s bedroom. Inside was Hild, the assistant some girl called Annis or something and the midwife whose name Tove had never cared to learn. The midwife was a short and spindly looking woman with wiry fingers that didn’t look near strong enough for the task of turning a babe, but she perhaps wisely kept her opinions to herself as the woman also had a fierce look in her eye as she surveyed the Dane.
“Lady?” Annis or Anne spoke. “Are you not meant to be with the children?”
Before Tove could reply, the midwife piped up. “Yes, this is no place for a warrior.”
The way the woman spat the word warrior made Tove’s eye twitch with annoyance. She had not realized the scorn with which the woman regarded her, though, whether it was because she was a Dane or because she shied away from the task of aiding in a birth Tove neither knew nor cared. Fixing the midwife with an equally as sour look she replied.
“It seemed it had been quite some time since we’d received news. I thought I’d come check on Gisela.”
“Oh, and you’d know would you.” The midwife mumbled under her breath.
Her sour look turning to one of anger, Tove opened her mouth to retort, but was cut off by Hild.
“You’ve told her the situation, Ealhswith?” Prompted the Abbess.
Ealhswith though somewhat dazed from tiredness and staring worryingly at Gisela nodded.
Hild looked to Tove then with an admonishing expression but pressed on clearly looking to keep the room as calm as possible. “She’s been resting awhile. We were just about to wake her. You could sit beside her if you like? I’m sure she would find your presence a comfort.”
Tove bit the inside of her cheek. She very much doubted her nervous aura would be at all comforting for Gisela just then, but the encouraging look on Hild’s face stopped her from saying so. Gisela had become like a sister to her. In this she could try to be there for her as the Lady had been for her on many an occasion.
Hesitantly, Tove moved towards the bed. Grudgingly taking direction from the midwife on where best to sit so she would not be in the way of her work. She did manage to keep herself from scowling at the old bat once she was seated. Hild was at Gisela’s other side gently shaking her awake.
“Lady.” Whispered Hild. “Lady, tis time to try again if you have recovered some strength.”
Tove could not help chewing the inside of her lip. Gisela was quite pale.
“Lady Tove has come to see you.” Annis added as Gisela began to stir.
“Tove?” Gisela murmured softly.
Tove cleared her throat and put on her most convincing smile. “I’m here.”
“The children?”
“Are well,” Tove affirmed.
Listlessly, Gisela gave a nod of thanks a small smile on her lips, though, it almost immediately disappeared as her expression contorted in pain and her body stiffened. Tove could not help stiffening as well as her eyes immediately shot to the midwife. The woman’s face was set in a serious expression as she hurried to check something and quickly began barking orders at Annis. Hild crossed herself and Tove could hear her praying for Gisela’s well being under her breath.
Frowning, Tove sent a prayer to Freya on Gisela’s behalf. She was not convinced the Christian’s nailed God would protect a pagan as their God demanded his followers worship only Him. What a ridiculous notion. As if she would worship only Odin who knew as much of childbearing as she did. Having known they would invoke their God instead of Freya, Tove had sacrificed a goat she bought for Freya just a week prior. So, she prayed that Freya remember her sacrifice and would protect her friend.
All was silent as the women worked except for Gisela’s labored breathing, groans whenever a contraction wrecked her body and the whispered instructions between Anne and the midwife. Try as she might, Tove could not relax. Every time Gisela gripped her hand like a vice, Tove shuddered inside. She thought Gisela had had easy births. It was what the Lady had told her anyway. This reminded her of the vague memory long ago of Astrid’s, but Tove pushed it down. Starting down that dark path would do her no good, instead she focused on singing a soft melody to Gisela in Danish. It seemed to calm her if only just and likely only for that reason did the midwife not tell her to shut up.
“I can’t get the babe to turn.” Tove heard Anne whisper to the midwife who had a distinct frown on her face for a while by then.
Gisela did not appear to have heard, but she had, and Tove looked to find Ealhswith’s eyes. She was not looking at her though her expression was worried. It was beginning to make sense why they were not having Gisela push yet which had slowly been becoming odd to her. Shooting a look toward Gisela, the midwife said something, but it was so quick and quite that the only word Tove caught was breach which in the context of the situation made no sense to her.
While she spoke English quite well there were still some contexts, words or phrases that stumped her at times. This was a most inconvenient time for such a moment, but she had only ever heard the word in reference to breaching a wall. The seriousness with which the woman spoke though told her all she needed to know. Whatever it meant was just as dire.
The near silence of the room was broken by the midwife who turned to Tove and spoke in a more gentle manner than she had thus far. “I think you might wish to check on the children?”
Immediately a scowl unfolded across Tove’s face causing Hild to exhale heavily.
“And why should I do that? The men are well equipped to ensure no harm comes to them.” Tove challenged. “Or do you simply wish me gone?”
Hild laid a hand on her shoulder. “Of course not. You may stay as long as you wish.”
And Tove missed the look the Abbess shot at the midwife as though she were mad for even attempting to remove the young warrior. The midwife only huffed and went about her business preparing for something or other. Whatever it was, Tove hoped she intended to hurry as Gisela was not looking at all well. Her skin previously pale looked positively sallow and her eyes rimmed with circles clearly from her exhausted state, but also her grip upon Tove’s hand seemed rather weaker than it first had. Pressing her lips together, Tove squeezed Gisela’s hand, but she barely felt a response and Gisela’s eyes were closed. It appeared she’d fallen back to sleep. Later she would wonder if the had been a squeeze back at all.
“I need you two,” the midwife indicated Ealhswith and Tove. “To leave so that I may focus.”
Before Tove could reply, Hild was at her side again her expression grave. When she looked to Ealhswith a tear was running down her cheek. It dawned on her then though she had known it in her gut.
“No.” Tove’s voice was hardly above a whisper.
“Please Tove.”
Scowling, Tove shook her head. “I have seen worse than anything you may be required to do. I will not leave her.”
Hild exchanged a look with the midwife who was beginning to look anxious to be rid of her.
“This is different than a battlefield child.”
“I am not a child. You had better save her’s.”
With that the midwife threw up her hands and sighed. At some point during their quarreling Annis had escorted Eahlswith from the room and was just returning. With the return of her assistant, the midwife immediately got to work without another word to Tove. Hild came to sit beside her, putting her hands over Gisela and Tove’s entwined fingers.
“Pray with me?” Hild asked.
She almost said no, but Tove supposed just then that the more Gods petitioned the better -even if the Christian God was spiteful, Gisela was a good woman he could not scorn her? And so, Tove placed her free hand over Hild’s as she began a prayer for Gisela and the child. Silently Tove prayed again to Freya as tears rolled down her cheeks.
It was not like a battlefield in that the midwife was correct and Tove could not make herself watch the process, though, from the lack of screaming at the knife’s blade it occurred to her somewhere in her subconscious that Gisela was already gone by that point. In fact, much to her shame, Tove had to release the Abbess’s hand at the sight of her friend so that she could empty her stomach. Around that time, the midwife sent Annis to fetch a wet nurse she supposed because the girl was gone when she came up from the bucket. She and Hild scarce breathed when the midwife lifted the babe from the gore and Tove saw that Gisela was indeed right, he was a boy. The tears she’d been restraining flowed freely then at the sight of the child, but he did not cry despite the thump the midwife gave him on the back.
Panic she’d been restraining up until that point broke through then at the sight of the babe’s pale skin. Tove watched intently as the midwife continued to try to aid the child in breathing. He squirmed though feebly. And Tove did not realize she was hyperventilating until Hild grabbed her by the face and forced Tove to look her in the eye.
“Breathe.” Hild said firmly.
“H-he-“
Hild shook her head. “The children will need you to be calm. Breathe Tove.”
But she could not be. All she could see was her mother’s face where Gisela lay. And the silence felt suffocating. Then the boy gave a weak cough and Tove might’ve snapped her own neck for how quickly she turned away from Hild, but the midwife did not look at all please with the sound as the boy made no other and seemed quite still.
Tove let out an almighty wail of anguish then and drew her seax without thinking about it. It was the midwife who looked quite panicked then her eyes wide and staring at the blade.
“Tove! Don’t!” Hild pleaded. “Tis not her fault!”
“I told you to save him!” Tove snarled.
The midwife said nothing. She could do nothing but stare.
“You could not even save her! And now you fail also to save her son?” Tove brandished the blade from Gisela who she could look at to the boy in the midwife’s arms. “Is it because she is a Dane? Do you hate us this much? The wife of the Lord who keeps your miserable city safe?! Or are you simply incompetent?”
Hild grabbed Tove’s blade arm with surprising force and managed to disarm her in her surprise.
“Go.”
The Dane threw Hild a filthy look. How could she protect such a vile old bat? A pitiful woman like that who could no sooner do her job than answer simple questions it appeared. Scowling, Tove shouldered past Hild and out the door past Eahlswith without another word.
Nobody was able to find Tove for two full days after her outburst. Cedric searched the whole city for her and became increasingly furious at her disappearance. He swore even to inform Lord Uhtred of her negligence claiming she had broken her oath by abandoning her post; though, he knew he would do no such thing. Everyone knew how close the two Danish ladies had been, However, after two days her absence was becoming a concern.
Then on the morning of the fourth day, Tove was spotted by a sentry on the wall. She rode at pace from the direction of the forest and said nothing to anyone once passing through the gates. At Uhtred’s house she came to a stop, swung herself from the beast’s back and tied him to a post before heading inside. Stiorra sat at the table there sniffling slightly when she looked up to find Tove standing there looking rather disheveled. Tears filled the girl’s eyes at the sight of her.
“You left. You left us.”
Struck, a tear rolled down the warrior’s cheek as she came to kneel in front of the girl. “I am forever filled with regret at having done so.”
Stiorra broke down into tears then and flung her arms around Tove’s neck. Up until then Stiorra had done her best not to cry, she was the Lady of the house now, but she was only a girl and now a girl with no mother. Tove held her tightly only allowing herself a few silent tears for Stiorra’s grief as the child cried her heart out. In that moment she vowed to herself she would be there for whatever Stiorra needed whether Uhtred remarried or not -for Gisela.

Fanfic Year in Review 2020
Tagged by the continuously wonderful @kirstenseas TY hun
1. List of fics completed this year:
I know what you did last night: The Untamed - WangXian
Seasons: TLK - Uhtred/Finan
We’re All Fools Here:  TLK - Uhtred/Finan
Amber:  TLK - Uhtred/Finan
What Would I Be:  TLK - Uhtred/Finan
Echoes:  TLK - Uhtred/Finan
Moon & Stars: TLK - Sihtric/Ealhswith & Sihtric/ Osferth
Osbert:  TLK - Uhtred/Finan
The scent of you:  TLK - Uhtred/Finan
& a bunch of Ficlets
Are we noticing a theme? Uhtred/Finan are just that special blend of best friends to lovers & old marrieds that makes me want to tear my face off so I will probably not ever stop writing them
2. Number of words written:
67,112 words published on AO3 & about 2.6k in tumblr prompts not to mention the scraps and notes I’ve got here there and everywhere which is more than I’ve written in like 8 or 9 years? I’m pretty damn happy about that tbh
3. Your most popular fic this year:
By far ‘I know what you did last night’ which I like to believe is cause its cute but also because its a much bigger fandom and a much more popular ship
My most popular TLK fic is ‘What Would I Be’
4. Your personal favourite this year:
This is difficult because there’s a few I’m fond of but I’d say its between Seasons and Osbert.
‘Seasons’ because it really kick-started my writing this year and I was really proud of it. It felt pretty true to the books and I enjoyed weaving in the little moments between Uhtred and Finan. I’ve debated messing with the end but I’m still very happy with it overall
‘Osbert’ because it came out of nowhere and just ended up so nice? It was originally going to just be a vent fic of Uhtred’s frustration at being injured/in pain and unable to do things he would normally do because at the time I started writing it I was commuting to work and the chronic pain I get from my hip dysplasia was flaring up real bad but then Finan just took over and decided Uhtred deserves all the softness like he so often does lol
Honourable mentions to The scent of you because it was super fun to write and The Bodyguard because I just enjoy the concept
5. Your favourite scene:
Little Stiorra threatening to fight Finan’s secret lover for his hand in marriage in Amber so she doesn’t have to marry any stinky boys.  I love love love Stiorra, she’s my baby and Uhtred and Finan just having a quiet afternoon being fond dads gives me all the warm & fuzzies
6. A fic or scene that challenged you:
Can I say all of them? Cause if so all of them, writing is hard and I am a very tired person who second/third/fourth-guesses every damn word
Mostly The Bodyguard though because its the first long fic that I’ve even attempted since like my ff.net days. I know what I’m doing with it/where I’m going but actually getting it all down is hard and slow going and I’m trying to forgive myself for that and not pressure myself and end up sucking out all the joy because I really do love it and I want to keep loving it
7. A line of writing you’re proud of:
Cheating with a couple lines from What Would I Be because it was one of those middle of the night-can’t sleep-sudden inspiration-omg the gay yearning of it all-things that I just really liked.
Once the clean-up is done Finan finds him. There is an easiness in the way that Finan folds into his embrace, steady and familiar. Finan pokes at his ribs when they draw back. “You were worried,” Finan teased, eyes warm with amusement. “As if I’d waste the energy on your scrawny arse,” Uhtred scoffed. But Uhtred was worried, he was, he was, he is.
8.  A comment that touched you:
I’m someone who reads and re-reads my AO3 inbox constantly whenever I’m feeling stuck or I’m having a Bad Brain day and I need the serotonin so its hard to pick one because I’m honestly touched by anyone who takes the time to comment but a special shout out to The Enablers and to @deespiegel because they’re all just so? lovely?? I wouldn’t have written half as much this past year without their encouragement
9. Something that inspired your writing this year:
Uhtred Uhtred Uhtred ❤ I literally cannot emphasise enough how much he means to me and with S4 & the last book coming out I just fell so deeply back into my feels. Looking forward to the next book has gotten me through some really low points the last 13/14-ish years and what is fic if not an outlet for dealing with a story you love coming to an end? Also just the TLK books in general, BC has a terrible (brilliant) habit of writing the main character and his best friend as just super married in his books but Uhtred/Finan might actually be the craziest example yet of all his books that I’ve read. The last 2 books especially (Sword of Kings & War Lord), how is my little gay heart meant to handle knee touches and worrying and inside jokes and “Did he touch you?” HOW?? BC ANSWER FOR YOUR CRIMES
The Enablers have also been an endless source of inspiration and encouragement. I used to be such a fandom lurker, I was too awkward and shy to talk to anyone but now I have like actual fandom friends?!! And they’re just such amazing people?!! Cannot believe, they’ve really kept me going this past year ❤
10. Your proudest accomplishment (that one scene; finally finishing that one fic; posting your first fic; etc)
The fact that I’ve written more than I have in absolutely forever and also committing to a long fic, its not done yet but just the fact that I’ve started is huuuuge for me
11. Do you have any writing goals for the next year?
To finish The Bodyguard and just keep writing :)
I think all the enablers have already been tagged so anyone else who wants to do this have at!
PS Please make a new post if you do :)

Behind the Character | Lucinda Arnedottir:
Now that Touched by Fire and Walk Through Fire are finished and it’s a while until season 5, I thought I’d share some of Lucinda’s backstory that might not have made it into my fics in case any of you are interested. Inspired by this post by @morosemagick
Lucinda was born in Northumbria shortly after her father and grandfather helped Ragnar the Fearless to take Northumbria. All her older sisters were born in Denmark, however Luana and Solvor couldn’t remember their homeland having only been a baby and a toddler when they came to England.
Her father was good friends with Ragnar the Fearless and their families often celebrated Yule and other celebrations together. She therefore met Uhtred and Brida but she was quite a bit younger than them so didn’t interact with them much.
Her grandfather, Erik, died when she was quite young.
Like all the sisters, she was taught how to defend herself from a young age, however she didn’t always dream of being a warrior. She only decided to become a shield maiden when she saw Aaliyah go off to her first battle when Lucinda was around 10, wanting to be like her sister.
She was always closest to Solvor. Caia and Aaliyah were quite a bit older and had always tended to argue with Luana, so spent most of her childhood with her. When they went on campaigns they would always share a tent - which was the reason why Solvor was the one taken by the Irish as she was asleep next to Lucinda.
Lucinda had been friends with Cnut’s nephew; although not really close, they had known each other for several years. That is why she was unable to defend herself as she had not been armed when he had attacked her, not thinking him a threat. It’s also why she didn’t make friends outside her family afterwards and always kept up her guard.
Sihtric was her first real friend since before her captivity.
She was enslaved in Ireland for six months before her family rescued her.
Solvor died after two months so she spent the majority of her enslavement alone.
She was 21 when she was taken captive, Solvor was 24.
At the beginning of Touched by Fire, she is 25 years old.
When she pretends to sleep with Sihtric to keep his cover, she tells him ‘she doesn’t have a reputation to lose’. This is because Cnut had his men spread rumours about her and gave her the reputation for sleeping around so people wouldn’t take her accusations against his nephew seriously.
Touched by Fire takes place over three years, meaning she is 28 when she marries Finan.
All her children with Finan have god parents. Sihtric and Hild for Lorcan, Ealhswith and Uhtred for Solvor, and Thyra and Osferth for Aoife.
At the beginning of Walk Through Fire, she is 34 years old.
At the beginning of Fire Turns to Ash she is 43 years old.

WRITING
Salvation: my romance novel! The work I hope one day to desperately send to an agent. Getting past the second chapter was hard but I am glad that I overcame it and in the end, I fell in love with my characters as I wrote them. True I wish it had more fans, but one day I hope it will. I mean, Ide and Roland own my heart and their epilogue is far from the end of them and I mean... I wrote Ide mainly to talk about depression and it was so far excruciating.
That secret project: which is actually a Medusa retelling I started writing as I read the Penelopiad. I love Atwood’s writing. It is so simple and yet intricately beautiful. There is no describing it and I wish to achieve such elegant simplicity. So far I only have fragments but one day perhaps I’ll have a whole novel. It is made of numerous scenes and poems and even if writing sonnets is hard, I’ll keep doing it because I owe Shakespeare and Ronsard that much. I am very passionate about that project but so far I want no one to see it but a few friends.
Breathe me: A fluffy piece I wrote for the Let’s be Danes challenge. Probably the most challenging one shot for me yet, but still good. I am proud of one passage in particular and I really tried to give Erik some epic in his misadventures.
Welcome home: A Sihtric x Ealhswith one-shot I wrote simply because I needed fluff and it turned out great and I loved their little banter and although it was a challenge in itself, I am proud of what I wrote.
Daughters of chaos: more like this year’s updates. This story’s shaping up nicely and I got a few more ideas for characters and some storylines are so epic I can’t wait to write them down. I’ll bring back some female characters of courese, and I decided to write only from the point of view of the women because screw Hirst, that’s why! I am thinking about bringing Yidu back, taking Gunnhild (tho I don’t know how yet) and keep Magrethe, have a bit more of Judith and a lot of Blaeja. Also, Thorunn may become more important in relation to Kattegat’s struggle to gain influence thoughout the whole of Sacndinavia. Anyway, I only wrote 1% so far but its scale will rise high.
ART
This year’s inktober series: was GREAT! I mean, I didn’t finish it which is... meh, but I am so happy about how well all the pieces were received. I loved exploring mythology this year and I love these new brushes I tried on. I am especially proud of the Medusa, Circe, Saint Odila, Medea and Mermaids ones. I loved toying with smoke this year.
This spiderverse fanart: I mean... It was SO WELL RECEIVED!!!! I wanted to try out something different (a bit more raw and paintish) and it go SO MANY NOTES AND REBLOGSI gushed a lot over it! I mean.... Thank you SO MUCH!!!!! Also I ADORED the Spiderverse and y’all should WATCH IT!!!!
That Mahiu bride piece: to which I attached a caption in the language I made up for Mahakaiao’s story which... takes me back lmao. I loved toying with the dress and everything and I was so happy with the way it was received!
Every single doodle I did in my moleskine notebook: I really got a grip on such notebooks this year and now I can barely function without one. It feels so good doodling, scribbling, chapter-planning and writing everything down I think I’ll do that forever which is fine by me.
Those kinky pieces: which I did with brush pen and an old sketchbook. I love drawing boobs. I love drawing lace and stuff and I love kinky stuff. I guess I mainly love boobs and I mostly love drawing and sharing it which is near impossible now thanks to tumblr’s new policies. But still, I love drawing boobs.
EDITS
Female awesome meme: Which I am close to finishing but I have narrowed down because I am that lazy. I tried making this as diverse as possible and I love every single woman there! I am so proud of SO MANY of the edits I did!!!! Some of them are my best works so far. I especially love the Villanueva ones, the Lucifer ones and the mcu ones. A lot of those are in my Best of, btw.
Those mermaids gifs: Hell yeah! I giffed this year and it was mostly animation (and mainly mermaids) because my photoshop won’t sharpen gifs. Yet I am so happy at how those gifs turned out and how pastel I managed to get them. I am so pleased peaople liked it!
The Vikings women meme: because the women in Vikings deserve THAT much and because I had the idea for the meme and had to do it and because I miss SO MANY of these women. I am especially proud of the queen ones, and the daughters ones (because I am a salty bitch lol).
Every mbs I did for mermaydsnet: but especially the pale and modern pieces because I nailed the colors and those are AWESOME!!!!!
That edit I did for Kenzo: which is an attempt at doing pale and soft things and the result outdid my expectations as I get to watch it without cringing and I am actually very proud at how I got it to be pale and yet vibrant and I loved it!
Basically, I did so many awesome things this year it almost feels like I have been productive lol.
I tag: @ceridwenofwales @sifshoney @undomielle @lahnister and @leejordan

‘… what about you?’ he tried to shift the attention away from himself “… interested in computer sciences?”.
