Excerpt from this story from Inside Climate News:
Late last summer, LaFanette Soles-Woods carefully made her way to the podium to address the Escambia County commissioners. Normally, she rode a mobility scooter because she so easily lost her breath. But she thought this occasion was vital enough to make an exception.
“I am asking you to table the renewal of these pits,” she said, “until we can get to the bottom of all of these problems that we have.”
For years she’d been a leader of the fight to clean up her home of Wedgewood, a small historically Black community a few miles away from the meeting in downtown Pensacola. The pits she spoke of were giant holes in the earth—”borrow pits”—from which companies extracted clay and sand and then turned profitable again by making them landfills and accepting all sorts of waste and debris, some of it toxic.
Soles-Woods, a 17-year Air Force veteran, had come to speak for others in the community whom she tracked in the Pensacola News Journal—on the obituary page. The contaminated groundwater, tainted soil and poisoned air from the borrow pits and the landfills and all the diesel trucks servicing them seemed to have taken a terrible toll.
“There’s not really a week that goes by that you don’t hear about somebody in the neighborhood that has died,” Soles-Woods, 63, said in an interview.
An accident of geography had helped turn Wedgewood—an aspirational destination for working- and middle-class Blacks sitting atop all this valuable clay and sand—into one of the most environmentally unjust places in the country.
Beverly Wright, the founder and executive director of the New Orleans-based Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, reached that conclusion after working with the Wedgewood community for a decade “to stop the continuation of the borrow pit-landfill cycle.”
Today, Wedgewood is home to seven solid waste facilities and four borrow pits, some of which fill with groundwater and appear deceptively as beautiful, natural aquamarine lakes. There’s also a rock crushing plant, a tree recycling facility and a UPS depot, all of which line Wedgwood’s streets with a near-constant parade of heavy vehicles.
Since none of the landfills are lined, toxins seep into groundwater. High levels of heavy metals, including arsenic, were discovered by county officials five years ago in runoff from the most notorious landfill, Rolling Hills, which is one of the reasons why most people in the community still prefer bottled water despite assurances that their tap water is safe to drink.

This is about a bunch of frightened little mommies who don't want to be the only one pulling their kid out of class when the lesson is on race.
This is about the mean girl mommy who doesn't have the guts to email the school librarian to say that mommy doesn't want her kid checking out books on LGBTQIA issues.
It's about parents who don't wanna be the class weirdo. So, they shift that burden to all of us.
No.
You don't want your kid studying the history of racism in the U.S.? *You* be the weirdo, and pull them out of class.
You don't want them reading To Kill A Mockingbird or Heather Has Two Mommies? *You* be the weirdo, and send a note to the librarian.
You.
Don't try to pass laws to cover up your weirdness. We see you. We know you. And we're telling *you* to #taketheweight.

Tate Homecoming Scandal Update
Laura Carroll and Emily Grover have filed civil suits against the Escambia County School District, FDLE, Chip Simmons in his official capacity, Gary Marsh, Brian Johnson, and Stephanie Cassidy in their respective capacities. Honestly, there is less ill will and imagination in these suits as there was in the criminal cases against these ladies. It still defies the sensibilities to think that one…

From the article:
If a governor, state representative, or school district resorts to banning books, they have already lost the fight between competing ideas. But that hasn’t stopped Gov. Ron DeSantis and an army of overzealous crusaders across Florida from ratcheting up their war against books, education, and social justice (shhh, no one is supposed to know about this one.) They’ll tell you that the campaign is an attempt to protect (their) children from books they deem “pornographic, harmful to minors, or that depict sexual activity.” According to the laws implemented by the Republican legislative supermajority, the books must be pulled from shelves within five days of a complaint and remain out of circulation for the duration of any challenge. According to PEN America, a free-speech advocacy group, one Florida school district has “banned” more than 1,600 books. Things have gotten so ridiculous that in Escambia County, school administrators have banned the dictionary.

“In an order from the bench, judge T. Kent Wetherell denied a motion filed by lawyers for the Escambia County School Board to dismiss the case, holding that while school officials may have the power restrict access to properly challenged books, they cannot simply pull books they disagree with or find objectionable from schools and school library shelves. The plaintiffs now have 28 days to respond to the court’s decision.”

My redneck neighbor Doug watches 'The Bad Batch': 'The Harbinger'
Yup, as we all know, Doug unlocked a HUGE character with Asajj Ventress, who is apparently an embittered ex-Navy wife lurking somewhere in the depths of the Florida Panhandle and not a reborn Jedi goth chick.
CW: You will learn more about this poor ex wife of John then you will ever deem fit. Be warned.
All images taken from here: https://www.cap-that.com/starwars/the-bad-batch/309
-----------------------------
Episode 9, “John’s-Ex-Wife: The Revenge”
Daddy Warcrimes does what a daddy in need of a mommy will do, and is going to pick up women by the dockside. Wonder if they take cash or not.
Tumblr media
And here’s Julio to remind him to wrap it before he snaps it, ya know? Good bro, when has Julio done anything wrong, love him. Maybe Julio laid his pipe in Space Louisiana last week, who knows if the mantis had a sister who had bills to pay and Terrebonne Parish don’t have a lot of jobs but has a lot of lonely people and, where were we?
Why is it all foggy here now? We in Maine now?
Well, Mutant Jimmers is doing work, as the kids say now, tracking down the junkies hiding out in the caves. I can’t blame Mutant Jimmers or the junkies, they gotta do their smack and doing it in the park ain’t good. I wonder who makes the meth on the island? It ain’t Church Lady, she’s too busy working and having fun in the snow with her beau, Sassy-Park-Ranger*.
Awwww shit it’s not space junkies, it’s worse! It’s JOHN’S-EX-WIFE! Of course she’s hiding her Ford pickup in a cave, the other one got booted outside of Pensacola after she banged the neighborhood granddad and he called the cops after she stole his TV.
Tumblr media
(the last shot John saw before he left for the rig that one time)
God damn, she’s wearing the same outfit you wear to work, Meat Muffin! Do you think she writes papers and yells at people on the phone like you do too?
Well John’s-Ex-Wife hasn’t changed, first thing she starts doing is fighting and bitching at everyone for not paying their bills on time. I hated that damn woman but I’ll say this much, she was organized. But that’s how the Devil is. Not organized to not cheat on John with every sailor in Pensacola and the neighborhood granddad but nobody’s perfect I guess.
Well, she’s going to test Little Orphan Blondie by making her do yoga on the beach while her brothers watch. Doing dumb shit in public to be different, yup, that’s John’s-Ex-Wife for you. Surprised Daddy Warcrimes hasn’t capped her and her bleached hair yet.
Tumblr media
Oh! Now she sent Little Orphan Blondie on an errand leaving the boys behind in a dark room with her. How much do you wanna bet there’s gonna be a train and Thomas the Tank Engine ain’t involved? God, it was a miracle John never ended up with the clap. His ex wife really was the bike of Escambia County.
And there’s a fight. Woo! John’s-Ex-Wife’s history as a bartender is coming on through! Girlfriend can handle her own–and here’s the lightsaber! WOAH! I don’t want her to kick my boy’s butts but damn girl, git ‘er done!
Tumblr media
Also why don’t they all just pile on her, why are they waiting, this ain’t ballroom dancing boys! Toaster Strudel and Rex would NEVER.
Where IS TOASTER STRUDEL AND REX?!?!?!
Well, Little Orphan Blondie’s back and seems to like John’s-Ex-Wife for some reason. God damn it, Little Orphan Blondie, you’re a rube and I ain’t happy about it. At least Church Lady got you sushi and hit on your idiot brother who didn’t deserve her.
Little Orphan Blondie’s no Jedi, whatever. But nothing brings the family together like deep sea fishing, even more then going off into the snow and punching each other in front of the trailer!
Tumblr media
Off John’s-Ex-Wife and Little Orphan Blondie go while the dads do a lil bit of peepin. Except Daddy Warcrimes who knows a thing or two and keeps a gun tailed her. Yeah, Daddy Warcrimes!
Oh! What’s this? Ain’t this the shit from Aquaman? Are they gonna get jumped by sea aliens until Aquaman throws flashlights at them?**
Nope! It’s that thing from Pirates of the Caribbean! Where’s Johnny Depp and his dreadlocks?! They’re firing up the HMS Search Warrant to do a rescue and…woah. Woah. What’s Johns-Ex-Wife doing here? The force? She can do all that shit but she can’t keep her marriage, oh Johns-Ex-Wife.
Tumblr media
Look at Daddy Warcrimes being a gentleman and helping the ladies onto their stolen work truck. Most ladies get upset when a creepy old man with a gun hoists them into a windowless van but not Johns-Ex-Wife. Trust me.
Johns-Ex-Wife warns them and then flings off, as she is wont to do. Why do I feel the next episode is going to be the DEA raiding Space Florida? I bet she’s a snitch for the government, calling it now!
*=Doug will never get off the Phee/Mayday train. I tried. I failed. I’m sorry, internet.
**=I THINK Doug means the Trench from the movie. The Trench Scene | Aquaman [4k, IMAX] - YouTube
For my Doug fans! @eyecandyeoz @cdblake1565 @sued134 @megmca @skellymom @yeehawgeek @amalthiaph and anyone else!

this past week (october 1-7) was banned books week. last year, censors targeted a record 2,571 unique titles, a 38% increase from the 1,858 unique titles targeted for censorship in 2021. the majority of these titles were written by or about members of the LGBT community, Black people, Indigenous people, and other people of color.
Tumblr media

recently, back in July, we saw Mississippi ban Hoopla & Overdrive for people under the age of 18, restricting young people's right to read and their access to library resources. this is likely going to continue as more parents lobby for "parent's rights" (aka the right to treat their children as property) and pressure school boards to remove certain books from the education system.
but there are people that are pushing back against these restrictions: Leah Johnson, author of You Should See Me in a Crown, has spoken out vocally against book banning as well as her experiences as a Black queer woman. she's also opened her own bookstore, Loudmouth Books in Indianapolis, which will be a haven and spotlight for marginalized voices and controversial literature.
George Johnson, author of All Boys Aren't Blue, has joined the PEN America vs. Escambia County School District to challenge the removal and restrictions of books from school libraries within Escambia County, Florida.
There are also multiple library systems across the country that have joined the Books Unbanned program, which offers free digital library cards to anyone age 13-21.
Brooklyn Public Library: ages 13-21, anywhere in the U.S.
Seattle Public Library: ages 13-26, anywhere in the U.S.
Los Angeles County Public Library: ages 13-18, California only
Boston Public Library: ages 13-26, anywhere in the U.S.
[source]
a lot of these book bans claim to be for the "safety" of children, but that is simply not true. these book bans target LGBT literature and Black literature indiscriminately. this does not protect children, it endangers the most vulnerable of them.
Gender Queer, by Maia Kobabe, was the top banned book in 2022. You can find the author here, where e reflects extensively about the current book bannings & advocates for children's right to read as well as the rights of other banned book authors.
Some of the other most banned books of this past year also include (in no particular order):
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
This Book Is Gay by Juno Dawson
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
Sold by Patricia McCormick
Maus: A Survivor's Tale by Art Spiegelman
Lawn Boy by Jonathan Evison
Melissa by Alex Gino
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Push by Sapphire
at the end of this banned books week, we should continue the conversation and support for marginalized authors and diverse literature, especially for children, in schools & libraries. get involved at your own local library, talk to your children or your siblings or your nieces and nephews, attend their school board meetings, and contact your representatives and speak out against book censorship.

Via Judd Legum at Popular Info: Here in the Florida Panhandle, the Escambia County School District has now removed dictionaries from its schools. Because those dictionaries contain definitions of "sex" which is a direct violation of Ron DeSantis' HB 1069 law prohibiting any library book that "depicts or describes sexual conduct" whether or not that description is "pornographic." And that includes dictionaries. Not only dictionaries, but also eight different encyclopedias, two thesauruses, and five editions of The Guinness Book of World Records. Biographies of Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Oprah Winfrey, Nicki Minaj, and Thurgood Marshall are also banned. Also, The Diary of Anne Frank has been removed because apparently conservatives consider the descriptions of Nazi genocide too sexually titillating for young minds. Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, and Stephen King were also banned. Ironically so was Ayn Rand and Bill O'Reilly. Eventually they won't allow any book in school, not even the bible. Because in addition to graphic descriptions of various sex acts far beyond those of a simple dictionary, they sure as hell are going to want kids reading anti-conservative ideas like "feed the hungry, clothe the poor, heal the sick, love your neighbor as yourself, do unto others as you would have them do unto you, don't pray in public like the hypocrites do, give up your worldly goods, etc" and get the wrong idea. The Word must ALWAYS be filtered through a Zampolit, er, ah, I mean, a preacher man who knows what their god REALLY means.
