My thoughts on The 100 7x05

Hey, guys,

Sorry for not doing any comments on the last two episodes. I’ve been a little busy and I struggled to connect to the show, so it hindered my enjoyment, but it’s all better now. Liked episode 4 and 5 was even better, jampacked with info and it answered a lot of questions.

Welcome to Bardo

Badass Octavia is da bomb (people don’t say that anymore, right?). When she was captured in episode two, I thought she had lost her fighting spirit, but it’s back, bitches. Well, until she runs into an invisible wall trying to escape. She’s captured and transported to M-cap (whatever that means). Then we get a welcome little flashback to Lincoln but it’s obvious that Bellamy would be the hand reaching out. He’s her rock, like she’s expressed many times.

Unlike John Murphy who is not quite a friend, or family and definitely not a lover. Introducing so many new characters in the final season of a show is never a good idea, because this is the time to wrap up all the stories of the existing ones, but come on, who cannot love Levitt. Even when he first meets Octavia, he doesn’t want to hurt her. Jason, you better not harm one hair on this precious little puppy’s head!

As he binges The 100 through Octavia’s eyes, he starts rooting for her, and he actually gives a damn, unlike most people on this show. He understands her strengths and weaknesses and he makes her see it too. “You’re a warrior to be sure, but your heart is pure.” Wow, what an honest and beautiful line. (Scroll down for my shipping comments.)

So is O and Hope’s fleeting little reunion. It’s amazing to experience this deep loving side of Octavia after her darkness. She’s truly one of the most diverse and developed characters on the series. Now Hope and her resilience is quickly making it to the top as well.

While Hope is trying to send her back home, we learn that memory loss is due to the time dilation. One quick note on this, it’s not linear, there’s no easy equation to calculate it unless you’re Stephen Hawking or Einstein. I don’t think it’s constant either. 10 years on Skyring = 11 days on Bardo = a few minutes on Sanctum. In the current time, 5 years on Skyring = 1 day on Sanctum = 7 days on Bardo. So, it’s clear that the planets are moving, and other factors are playing into the phenomenon. It’s more important to understand the time relative to each planet.

Levitt was the one who tattooed Hope’s code onto O’s back, also the one who planted the note into Hope’s arm. Indeed the kind of man you want on the inside, he even accepts a blow to the face as thank you.

Sheep-ish?

Thirty minutes on the clock and the trio gets led to a congregation to praise the shepherd. I never thought it was Anders, I do, however think it might be Cadogan. The Bordoan’s built the underground forest because they destroyed their planet. Ugh, what’s new? The shepherd herded his sheep from earth to Bardo via the stone. Cadogan and his second dawn cult?

Back to Clarke. So, after last episode I thought ‘the key to winning the last war’ line was an artifice for luring Clarke to disciples, but now it’s clearly true. They’ve located the key and they will win the last war. Levitt was interested in Clarke surviving the City of Light with the flame in her head, they probably assume she still has it. Cadogan burned Becca alive. Could it be because of the flame? Is this all because of that damn little chip that can’t seem to die?

Bellamy is not dead, I repeat, Bellamy is not dead! I believe that memory could be staged or implanted for a reason. Also, there’s no body, he jumped through the bridge. In the promo photos, he wears a ring but his actions towards Octavia seem a little cold and generic. On first watch, I thought it was bad acting but if he was programmed to do this, it makes sense.

Note the sequence of events. Octavia returned 7 days ago and was asked to talk her brother down, but we don’t see the actual scene. Instead we’re shown a memory. They could have implanted it to make her vulnerable and perhaps more susceptible to the procedure. I don’t know, but this theory could lead to Robot-sheep!Bellamy on Nakara, where he’ll encounter Clarke and the gang.

I have to be honest, I really don’t like this character arc for Bellamy. It’s unoriginal and a mime of Peeta’s storyline in Mockingjay. Sorry, but so far it feels like the writers were so over the show, they just wanted to get it done. And that attitude really bleeds into one’s creative concepts. I could be completely wrong, in fact, I hope I am.

Echo spins a Finn

My word, I lost the love of my life once, but I sure didn’t kill anyone. When Echo received that vision of Roan, I was hoping for some progression on her individual arc, they’ve made me care about her, and now we get the opposite. Why? One thing I have to admit, a killer performance from Tasya Teles! No pun intended.

Look, this show hasn’t explored Bellamy and Echo’s relationship enough to make her murder believable. It was the exact same thing with Finn. I wasn’t invested in Finn and Clarke’s connection, so his actions of killing a grounder tribe was more repulsive than understandable. Sure, Echo loves Bellamy and her sole purpose is to save him, but I’ve never truly witnessed their love for each other. They had one or two intimate scenes which cannot compel a deed like this. And in the process, she screwed Hope and Diyoza.

Anyway, I don’t think there’s any coming back from it. She murdered an innocent person in cold blood. That’s sure to open a door to the dark side. Just look at Octavia after killing Pike and her actions were justified by jus drein jus daun.

Say Sanctum three times slowly and it sounds like… Sanctum

Blind faith

Look, I’m just gonna come out and say this song is getting old. Every episode featuring Sanctum is the exact same thing with different lines. Can we please move on from it, already? Yes, we know the COG want Russel dead, and the adjusters will go to extreme lengths to free Russel and the prisoners are background noise.

I did appreciate Nelson stepping in to try and save the girl, though. Still doesn’t save the fact that it’s repetitive. The Sanctum plotline is really struggling to take shape and I hope it happens soon. Dramatic eyeroll.

At least in the drought of a desert, you can always count on Murphy. “…I say we live and let die.” Typical cockroach line, right, but it’s ironic when he’s the one to step up, even if it is for Emori. Under the magnifying glass it’s the exact same plot as episode 1 and 3. He hesitates to take action, and eventually becomes the hero.

I mean, he saved that poor kid from being burned alive. Can you imagine sacrificing your own child in such a horrific away? Cults are beyond whacked, and, unfortunately, it’s reality that cult members are so blinded by their faith that they do not see rhyme or reason.

How did Murphy fail that test? I didn’t. When Trey named the four pillars, I thought, isn’t rejoice one of them? Surely, a cockroach would have smelled that trap a mile away.

Indra the great

Can we just give a massive round of applause to Adina Porter!!! That powerhouse walk vibrates strength and majesty, damn, she should be a false god, I wouldn’t dare threaten her with or without an army.

Three little words was all it took for her to recognize evil. “There’s a spider on your shoulder.” Smooth. Too bad she can’t kill him. Why not, how many of the faithful are left to cause an uproar? Wonkru doesn’t know it’s Sheidheda, they won’t care, the COG will fall in line and the prisoners will be happy as long as they get their compound. Sorry, I don’t get it and I don’t understand why she doesn’t tell anyone. Someone please explain?

Granted, JR Bourne as Russel is way better, but I still don’t understand his actions. I hope they explore and explain him more, because he still feels flat unless he knows something of this final war. I’m hoping these two storylines align soon since it’s really driving a wedge between me and my love for the show.

Shipwreck

I’ll start with the easy stuff, Murphy, Emori and the perfect dress gets a heart eye emoji from me. They are so damn cute this season, can they please live happily ever after in the palace?

Octabriel vs Levittavia

Now, I enjoy Levitt fangirling over Octavia. I feel like he has a deep sense of her through her memories. If I have to root for an underdeveloped relationship, it will have to be one where the characters share thoughts and experiences even if it is through a sick, sci-fi procedure.

On the other hand, Gabriel and Octavia have immense chemistry, two seconds of them together bends my mouth into an “Aah, cute” pout. This will also add some approval and representation for mixed racial relationships.

I really don’t mind either way as long as they make me care through showing and not telling.

Bellarke

So, if my theory is correct, and Bellamy does end up on Nakara, Bellarke will encounter each other quite soon. Bellamy won’t be himself though, but he might pretend to be Bellamy to win Clarke’s co-operation. Is there hope for Bellarke yet?

Echo is now trotting a dangerous path and Bellamy might be pledged to a cause, so I doubt there will be a happy ending for Becho. Since 7x01 I’ve been thinking that the writers might want to develop something between Clarke and Gaia but if they are separated, is there enough time? Guess we’ll see.

This monster of a review is finally done… If you read through everything, you deserve a gold star! Let me know what you think, till we meet again…

Nuzlocke - Ultra Moon (Part 4)

Chapter 6 - Rules of Nature

After the Fire Trial, I was more than eager to face the Grass Trial: I had a team with good advantages and resistances, so I wasn’t too worry about it... Not like I let my guard down given the past. In the meantime I added Soma to the team, using immediately my newly acquired Water Stone to turn him into a Vaporeon, so I grinded him a bit in the Lush Jungle, without the fear of Pursuit.

I had finally cleared all the Trials of the Island, all I needed to do was to face the Kahuna, Rock specialist... Which wasn’t good at all. Oliver, Dammek, Jiro and especially Douglas weren’t very fond of it. I had to rely on Raiden and Soma.

But before that I crossed the Diglett Cave and, once outside, I had to solve a difficult case... Five Dittos impersonating humans!

Once I cleared the streets, I marched to the Ruins, arena for my Grand Trial. But before that I had to save some Aether Foundation guys from Team Skulls. Unfortunately, this time they were lead by their Lieutenant, Plumeria. I found myself in a rather tight spot with Jiro versus a rather powerful Salandit: she took a Fire Shot, that she tanked, but she could not stay on the field. I thought she would not repeat Fire Shot on a Dragon Type, probably relying on Poison or physical attacks, so I throw in Raiden. Bad call. Despite my guesses, she insisted on Fire Shot and killed Raiden. That was a huge loss for the team, both as a mate and as an asset: no more Steel tank, no more Intimidation, no more Physical Attacker.

Soma had to seal the deal with Plumeria, but now I had to face Olivia with Soma as the only option without weaknesses... Oliver could probably hold his ground, but the others were in a tight spot.

As Anorith entered the battlefield, I took few turns setting up the defenses: Acid Armor twice and Aqua Ring. Anorith went down easily, but Lileep was kind a pain in the neck: Giga Drain wasn’t fatal, but it undid most of my damage, so the battle dragged on quite a bit, until I landed Confusion with Water Pulse. With Lycanroc I was afraid of Crits, but one strike was enough to take him down.

Island cleared, but with four casualties.

Chapter 7 - I'm the best there is at what I do: screwing up my life

[[Narration wise I’ll skip Aether Paradise, it was rather pointless]]

I sailed to Ula’ula Island and I was off to a rough start: my good pal Hau challenged me... Something was different about him. He was even more determined than before, but also a little... vicious? Maybe it was just my impression, but in any case it was a very tough battle: victory without casualties was achieved with great suffering and effort.

I went to the Gardens to meet Kahui, but I left my guard down: thinking Douglas could outspeed a Raichu and U-Turn he got hit by a Thunderbolt. No need for crits, it was a 1HKO. That was my fucking screw up. But more were to come.

I did what I needed to do in Malie City and left for Route 10. And then...

I was devasted. I did thought of the possibility of an Ice Move, but that was supposed to be rare... My grief and the grief of my team was palpable and that heavily influenced my performances, leading to a slaughter of the rookies that were supposed to fill the voids.

Looking at them back, most of them were something I could not foresee: Pursuit on Raine the Natu from a Crabrawler, Fearow using Mirror Move to mimic Brick Break and oneshot Mako the Komala, Ribrienne the Raticate going down from a Crit from Absol.

Still that was ton of blood on my hand, a heavily unbalanced team and more challenges to come.

At the Oscars, it’s the big-ticket categories that tend to draw the most attention, but this year the winner for animated short rose to prominence.

“Hair Love” is a sweet and joyful story about an African-American father learning to style his daughter’s natural hair in his wife’s absence. The film uses words sparingly; the characters’ gestures and expressions take viewers through the father’s commonplace but poignant endeavor.

One of the film’s messages — embracing and loving your natural hair — was transported to the ceremony itself on Sunday. The actress Gabrielle Union and the former N.B.A. champion Dwyane Wade, married producers of “Hair Love,” invited to the ceremony a black high school student in Texas who was suspended because of the way he wore his dreadlocks.

The student, DeAndre Arnold, was told that his look violated the student handbook, which said that male students’ hair must not extend below the top of a T-shirt collar. Critics of the policy called it racist and rooted in limiting gender roles.

Arnold wore a black and navy blue tuxedo by Paul Smith. His mother, Sandy Arnold, wore a blue gown by Solace London. (The company Dove paid for their Oscar tickets and red-carpet looks.)

Accepting his Oscar, “Hair Love’s” writer, Matthew A. Cherry, said he wanted to draw attention to the Crown Act, a law first passed in California that bans discrimination based on natural hairstyles and that backers hope to pass in other states.

In “Hair Love,” young Zuri tries to fashion her thick curls into a stylish hairdo using the directions of a vlogger, but when she struggles to make it work, her dad steps in. He starts out frustrated and bewildered by the array of hair tools and products, almost giving up until he seeks help from the natural hair vlogger.

The six-minute film stood out in a year where Oscars nominees have noticeably lacked racial diversity, despite efforts in the film industry to shift the narrative: Only one actor of color — Cynthia Erivo of “Harriet” — was nominated.

Cherry, a former football player, said in an interview last year that he wanted the film to combat negative stereotypes about black fatherhood and address a lack representation in animation.

“I wanted to see a young black family in the animated world,” he said.

On the stage on Sunday night, another “Hair Love” filmmaker, Karen Rupert Toliver, described the film as a labor of love that stemmed from “a firm belief that representation matters deeply,” especially in cartoons “because that’s when we first see our movies and it’s how we shape our lives and think about how we see the world.”

The story is told mostly through miming and body language, but the vlogger is voiced by Issa Rae. It was directed by Bruce Smith, the creator of “The Proud Family,” the Disney Channel animated sitcom, which is due for a revival on Disney Plus; and the veteran Pixar animator Everett Downing Jr., whose credits include “Brave” and “Up.”

Nuzlocke - Ultra Moon (Part 5)

Chapter 8 - This is the end, my only friend

As I predicted, my team was desperately unbalanced and in the long run I payed it dearly. For the Electric Trial I had to recruit Cinzia to the team and evolved her in Dugtrio: she wasn’t my first choice, being a rather glass cannon Pokémon, but I had no choice and in the end I breezed through the Trial. It was the rest that screwed me up.

Back in Malie Town I met Guzma, the boss of Team Skull: it was my chance to take him down! The battle was fierce and in the end he got Soma with a Critical Sucker Punch, going over his defenses. As I mourned the fall of my comrade, the scum took the chance and ran away!

I collected my bearing and rushed in Guzma’s pursuit; a bloody battle ensued with a herd of wild Mudbray and I had to trade Cinzia and Ashido’s lives to catch Reinhardt. But I was exhausted and broken by the many, many losses. Never I could be prepared for what fate had planned for me.

An anonymous trainer, nobody important (although he believe he was the Kahuna of Route 12) wiped out my whole team with a Pinsir powered up by two Sword Dance and that outspeeded my whole team.

It was the end.

Chapter 9 - I came up from the bottom and into the top

I really thought about giving up. Many do at this point. But I had still Pokémon in my boxes and, more importantly, I could no let go to waste all the lost lives. I HAD to see it through, with a new team, carrying on an important legacy.

In those months that I trained, I was encouraged by words that Oliver once told me:

I need to believe that no matter what happens in our lives, no matter how much darkness infects us, I need to believe that we can come back from that.

It was hard getting back on my feet, both physically and emotionally. Many had died. Sometimes it was my fault, sometimes it was an inavoidable tragedy. And it was bound to happen, hell as I was training the new team I had losses again.

But now it was my time to take back what my own stupidity and a cruel fate desperately tried to destroy.

In the months of my absence I still kept a line open with the Professor and I learned that Hau stopped the Challenge to protect people and Pokémon from Team Skull... Glad somebody picked up the mantle I left.

I therefore hoped to resume my Challenge without having him biting at my heels. I found Acerola and started the Ghost Trial: Mimikyu proved to be a formidable opponent, my initial plan of swooping in with Judith’s Steel Wing went to hell, as my opponent was stronger thant expected and to make things worse he summoned a Banette that burned and cursed my Pokémon. I swapped in with Ivan, gave him a Defense X; he was cursed as well, but at least that killed Banette. I played the long game with Mimikyu and he called a Jellicent; luckily Ivan had Discharge, so in the end I managed to take them both down.

I found my wat to Aether Tower, where I found Hau and Plumeria; so much for staying under the radar... I jumped into the battle, but once again she went down dragging one of my own with her: Ivan was hit by a Critical Sludge Bomb, leaving him with 1 HP and Poison in his body; his attack against Salazzle was not enough to KO her, so he died, poison burning in his veins.

I later learned that Team Skull stole some Pokémon and retreated to their HQ, Po Town. It was time to pay them a visit.. They owned me three lives.

Nuzlocke - Ultra Moon (Part 2)

Chapter 2: The risk I took was calculated, but man, am I bad at math

Hau’oli City ws rather impressive and allowed me to get a new team member, Monoma the Mime Jr, and to mop the floor with a couple of evil-doers... They call themselves Team Skull, but rather than worthy opponents they are a bunch of petty vandals. Nevertheless, I’ll make sure to trash them away at every chance, bringing justice like a true hero!

I left the city and got to Route 2, where I missed the chance to catch an Abra... Looks like it was fate. In the Cemetery I met Gabriel, a lost soul with unfinished business that turned into a Ghastly... He hides his face behind a reaper mask, ashamed of what I’ve become... Joining my team might be his chance at redemption!

I started training for Ilima’s Trial... Gabriel himself was going to be my ace in the hole, dropping a Curse, retreating and let it run its course... I was so focused on that, I forgot about wild Spearows’ Moveset...

... It was fate. Yeah it was meant to be. It... wasn’t my mistake. Gabriel had to find peace with death.

That’s what I told to myself and to my team. Oliver wasn’t on board with that, but he didn’t voice his concerns.

I tackled down Ilima’s Trial with another strategy: in Oliver, Growl a couple of times on both the Totem Pokémon and its ally, retreat for Dammek with Bug Bite. Simple, but the actual fight was a bit more difficult, with many turns lost due to flinching and a couple of close calls both on Oliver and Dammek, but in the end we won. My first Trial was done and so the path to the Kahuna, and to my destiny, was open.

Chapter 3: Finding your call

With the Route 3 open I was tasked with another heroic duty: finding Lillie and her Pokémon! This brought me to Melemele Meadow and then to Seaward Cave where I met two strange guys and their GODDAMN FURFROU WITH GROWL, BABYDOLL EYES AND SAND ATTACK. Took me a while to put down the pooch, but in the end I was able to rescue Nebby.

As I was getting out of Melemele Meadow, Hau caught up with me, still determined to ‘save me’ from the Challenge. Poor Hau, always a step back, still with his Popplio, while Oliver was already a Dartrix. The fight was quick and painless, at least for me.

But the pain arrived, in the end. I fought an Ace Trainer, using Lupin against his Slowpoke, nullifing his Psychic attacks. Then it was the turn of Butterfree. This time I reasoned on its Moveset... Confusion, a bunch of Powders, maybe Gust and the Roost the Trainer was bragging about. Let’s keep Lupin. But it was still a Bug. Don’t know if Butterfrees normally know Silver Wind by level 14, but it had it. And Lupin was dead. Not only that, I had a hard time to beat Butterfree, unable to land a blow so powerful that Roost wasn’t able to heal; I had to force it to Struggle.

I won. With another death on my hands.

Oliver was right. I wanted so hard to find meaning. Not in Lupin’s death, but rather in my life. To have something to be mine alone. The Chosen One deal was perfect for that. But I neglected my duties as Trainer and I failed my companions. But no more.

I realized then that the whole ‘Pokémon choose you’ in Alola was deeper than I thought. Oliver got through some shit himself, he was cocky and selfish as I was, but then, when he was struck by tragedy, he reached deep inside of himself and brought out someone else, someone better, with purpose and a sense of justice. A hero.

A hero. I wanted to be a hero myself. I didn’t take that mantle as an excuse like a did with the whole Chosen One thing. I have a strong sense of justice. And maybe that was the meaning I was looking for.

After burying Lupin, we moved on, ready to face the Kahuna. No more mistakes, just playing it safe. I had a big advantage over my opponent: Monoma, that in the meantime evolved in Mr Mime. Psychic/Fairy means double resistante to Fighting Moves and I placed a double Barrier for good measure; a couple rounds of Meditate and then I rained Confusion on every Pokémon of my opponent.

I... I mean, we, we became the Champions of Melemele. But there were more Islands to travel and Trials to face. But I knew I was gonna face them as a new me.

Destiny must be forged with our hands.

Chapter 4 - I WON’T LET YOU GET AWAY WITH THIS

I crossed the sea to the second Island of the Challenge with renewed vigor and more attuned with my Pokémon than ever. The city was just a brief stop, as I was eager for new battles and team-mates. In Route 4 I met Akande the Pikipek and then Ivan the Mareep in Paniola Ranch. I also received an Egg that, once hatched, revelead Soma the Eevee... It was too soon for his debut, but I had big plans for the little one.

Along the way I beat every trainer and finally reached Paniola Town, where I met Hau

It seemed that he was a fighter after all... But, as much as I appreciated his spirit, I beat him easily once again. In town I saved a Vulpix from the Team Skull... Those cowards! The little thing ran away, but I had the feeling we were bound to meet again.

In Route 5, after catching Ada the Fomantis, I found Hau losing against some over-the-top edgy trainer... He seemed quite eager to challenge me, so I indulged him. He was tough, but I was tougher, but in the end I won.

He seemed associated with those Skull scums, but he was also... different. Fierce, but gentle; eyes on his goal and heart in the right place. And I mean, he just beat Hau. Even it means being a bad guy, I should be Giratina itself.

I reached Brooklet Hill and undertook the Trial, but... This Pokémon was too strong.

Despite Krillin’s sacrifice, Aquarinid was still a threat, but at least I had the chance to throw in Dammek, that had evolve in Charbug. Even then, the Bubble onslaught didn’t leave me an opening to counterattack, all my turns were spent healing. But then, Dewpider used Bug Bite and that left Dammek with more than half life.

I was victorious, but it was all thanks to Krillin’s big heart, that sacrificed himself for the good of the team. Enjoy your free Sundae buddy.

Chapter 5 - Plus Ultra

There was no time to lose, I had already to think about the next Trial: Fire. Unfortunately, half of my team was weak to it (Oliver, Raiden and Dammek), so I took Bastion the Carbink: it was a tank, just what I needed. I started training for the Trial until I was ready.

I revised my strategy before beginning the Trial: Bastion in, Reflect, Sharpen and then throw rocks; if things go south, Monoma, Reflect, Light Screen and then Confusion. I started my Trail and the first turn went okay: Reflect, I took some damage and Marowak called Salazzle. But then major shit hit the fan: Marowak had Brick Break. As I saw the barrier crumbling and Bastion being pummeled to death, I started to panic.

I threw in Monoma... Okay I can still do this. Confusion should be more than enough to kill Salazzle before Venoshock... But it wasn’t enough. Monoma fell as well and I didn’t know what to do.

Jiro stepped in. I feared for her, since she didn’t have high defenses, but all the other Pokémon were weak to Fire and Poison... Oliver to both of them. I had no other choice. Jiro or death. She knew it. I knew it. Luckily, Marowak played defensive, wasting a couple of turns for Detect; Jiro KOed Salazzle, I healed her and gave her Defense X to withstand the attacks. She took quite a beating from Marowak’s Hex, but in the end she won the day and saved the team.

Oliver had no scolding for me, he just shared my pain: he knew that there were nothing I could do to prepare myself for such a battle. I did my best, but two of my Pokémon died. So, my best wasn’t enough. I had to do better. Plus Ultra.

I recruited Douglas the Fletchling in the team, leaving the sixth spot open since I had no better options; he quickly evolved in Fletchinder as we moved to the North. On Route 8 I met the Vulpix again, being rescued by the Aether Foundation... It seemed there was more than I could do to help it.

At least, at that I was good.
