Crossing the Line | Part 2

For Eddie Munson, it started with a tweet. A random little tweet in his mentions that ignited his incredibly hard to control impulsive curiosity. One of his long-time followers and his best friends little brother, a boy with a love of DnD who only begrudgingly followed him after he recorded one of his campaign sessions and posted it to YouTube, pinged him a mention with a single link in it to Instagram captioned “roast him he’s ruined Crazy Train!”

Michael Wheeler you little shit. He’d get Nancy on that one, Mike’s obsession with roasting people was getting mildly out of hand.

But Eddie was a curious soul and someone had apparently ruined an Ozzy masterpiece, so of course he followed that link, he didn’t even hesitate, even let out a cute little “boop” out loud as he clicked it.

Now. Eddie Munson, could have probably been classed as a bit of a music snob. He wouldn’t go too far with his snobbery, but for some people... it was just an unwritten rule that some people deserved the snobbery to the max. They deserved the shit storm that came with Eddie’s brutal honesty and lack of verbal filter.

And Nepo-babies with nothing better to do than *fix* legendary metal tracks with their top 10 bubblegum bitch bullshittery were 100% deserving of the roasting his bitchiest of little sheep had called for.

Did he go a little overboard over the following week while bored shitless in between customers at his shitty non-chain coffee shop gig? Absolutely. Did he feel bad? Absolutely not. It’d taken him all of five minutes to decide Steve Harrington was the worst.

Even if the nepo baby thing wasn’t enough, he was spotted with a different piece of arm candy every month, he had girls and guys falling all over themselves to get a glimpse from him in their general direction, like, there were articles about fights breaking out in the audience of his shows because fans couldn’t decide which one of them he looked at. He lived in some fancy ass house if his insta photos were anything to go by which no doubt his parents bought for him, he did way too many PR stunts to make it seem like he was a good guy, and while his voice was… okay, it wasn’t bad… passable, it was passable…

It sure as fuck needed to stay in its own goddamn lane.

So, the boredom in between the rare rush thanks to the Starbucks down the street was filled with what could only be described as obsessive online bullying, his ADHD hyper fixated so hard, but no way was he even going to notice it, so Eddie didn’t even feel bad about it. The guy had so many people falling all over themselves in hopes he’d notice them that his measly little insults would probably wind up just buried in the sea of hormones and the occasional desperate “COME TO BRAZIL” hashtag Brazilian flag and several thousand heart emojis.

And just as a fun little topper on the ice cream sundae that was his weeklong bitchfit into the void, a lovely little cherry on top, he covered Crazy Train on his channel. Not just the guitar bits, but he made chords and tabs for the lyrics too, letting his sweetheart sing for him, he never sang on his channel, vocals were just for the band gigs, his channel was primarily game music covers but this one, this one he declared “This is what it’s supposed to sound like” in the intro then rocked it.

Eddie was all about freedom of musical expression, but Steve Harrington could go suck a fat one if he thought he was getting away with ruining a masterpiece with his croony bullshit.

“So” The week after he’d finally put his one sided feud to rest, found one Nancy Wheeler, the instigators older sister sidling up to the counter mid-way through the most boring Sunday shift Eddie had ever worked in his life.

“Wheeleeerr, my sister from the most boring of misters, what can I get you babydoll?” He didn’t even need to ask, and she didn’t actually need to say it, he was already halfway through making her fancy little favourite, a cinnamon hazelnut latte with soy milk knowing she probably only had five minutes before she’d have to bolt again.

“Eddie… why have you spent the better part of a week harassing a celebrity on Instagram?”

“I think you mean an entire week, your little brother released the dogs of war. Aaaand the ADHD told me to do it.” He grabbed one of the little honey buns from the treats display and popped it onto a plate for her “forgive me honey bun?” A pet name AND a treat combined. She rolled her eyes fondly before accepting the free treat. “Why do you ask?”

“No reason.” There was absolutely a reason, but… honestly he brought whatever was coming to him upon himself. Sort of. She'd stand in his corner if shit got real. “I’ll handle Mike, don’t harass celebrities until you’re actually a celebrity, and even then, don’t harass celebrities.”

“It’s not like he’d notice, let’s be honest he has more fans than there are stars in the sky, all of them, and I do mean all of them, fully up for bearing his children.” Seahorse dads in the house! But also, mpreg too, ass babies unite. “It’s not like some rando having a questionably obsessive and lowkey aggressive meltdown over his ‘I’m bored as shit’ experiment would ever grace his radar.”

“I’m just saying Eddie, you never know who you’re going to reach with your online nonsense, if you ever want to get out of this place, you’re going to have to play nice with people from all walks of life, including nepotism babies.” The bark of laughter that erupted from Eddie Munson would have probably insulted most people, but Nancy had known him for years. He was listening, he was, there were just layers upon layers of automatic reactions to get through before he’d visibly take in what you were saying. “He could be nice, you never know.”

“Oh yeah, his royal highness seems lovely. Did you know people used to call him King Steve?” Seemed like the worst person on the planet masquerading as a semi-decent guy. Eddie wasn’t fooled in the slightest. “Your drink, mademoiselle!” He presented her with a large to-go cup filled with her favourite beverage.

“Don’t you have some odd little moniker on your youtube channel?” She asked behind the lip of her cup, before taking a sip and humming in appreciation. Even if he was a little shit, Eddie could make a mean latte.

“That’s a persona, it’s an online personality! People calling me Kas is different, people just called him that cause of how much ass he got. It’s weird, I bet he started it himself and paid his cronies to use it until it caught on.” That was good, maybe he’d pick his feud back up just to lay that one on him. “Seems very nepo baby of him, y’know? Can’t get a good nickname circling so he’s gotta buy one.”

“Wouldn’t his parents have bought it for him?”

“Ohhhh Wheeler good one! Nice nickname, did your daddy buy it for you? Babe, sugar plum, I love you. Imma write that one down for later.”

“Please don’t.” He was already off, and she caught sight of her smartwatch beeping about some meeting she was close to being late for. “Shoot! Gotta run, no more harassing celebrities!”

“I promise nothing!” Ah well, it probably wasn’t that big of a deal that Steve Harrington’s best friend had DM’d her, probably not a big deal at all, probably meant nothing... probably.

There's slutty Guy Friend who's like thats whats up love is love. what do you mean you're not dating. theres "so that just happened." and dated references . and mixtapes. it is Every Fanfiction. and. i think i am realizing. the reason that i never read plotted fanfiction is because most of the time its this. and it sucks. ive speent the last 100 pages going. ok. and when is it going to get fucked up. one of the characters is #SoNeurotic that he goes to therapy 4 times a week and is on antidepressants but he hasn't said something unforgivably cruel even once? if this was destiel fanfiction* there may not be any overarching conflict but at least ONE of them would be one. unmedicated. TWO. crazier than all get out. THREE. the most closeted man this world has ever seen. FOUR! have the sickest family background invented.

*passable destiel fanfiction. a level above bad and a level below good will hit this mark. good will also obviously hit this mark but the point i am making is that it's a fairly low bar that many destiel fanfictions leap over.

Based from your former posts like super random old ones I guess you have watched shounen genre harems like code Geass. When you're aware of the tropes it's easy to shrug off what happened in between to just fan service or not. I guess I'm just bringing up people being adamant about cloud's reaction to aerith's dress. At least the favorable ones. I know of the real meaning of it, that he's confused, I watched Yamazaki about it and even he was surprised at the final production. I trust his reaction because it seems to me he didn't get "act all mesmerized to her dress" as a stage direction. But rather act confused would be more accurate. But that's not where I'm getting at. I'm getting at the parts in shounen harem or not harem really, where lets say the third party can go and kiss you and all that. Mc's going to blush, panic, or any reaction. This is technically romantic in the atmosphere. But does that mean it properly does that effect? Is he in love? Are these third party really doing anything? No. I could literally just compile kissing scenes from the third parties or any other reaction and then place in the part where the Mc straight on rejects the same girl like nothing happened. Like he never blushed, nothing, its cold. And so when I see defenders on reddit , twitter , or I don't know anymore saying that's supposed to be romantic! Any scene with her really. I just think of this phenomenon in Japanese media for boys and just smh that sure go ahead have deep thoughts on a fan service but it doesn't really mean anything. You could look at most mc in shounen for example ikki from air gear, he'd be putting himself out there in compromising positions with girls and they get a reaction out of him. Does that mean he has feelings/attracted to them? Nah, unless it's explicitly being showed , sayed, developed , wtvr actually substantial like it's supposed to be convincing okay? And not like your counting what is possibly counted / passably romantic because that's desperation (pssh like with aerith scenes). Just to push it out there as well, anybody thinking ff7 is inspired from shoujo tropes don't get FF is a male demographic game. If they do then they're probably doing that for a reason (perhaps to send of the illusion/ confusion part? Wink wink). Yeah, that whole red dress thing is one giant bit of fanservice. It's an optional result from the player's efforts. If it was canon you'd get the red dress no matter what you did, and there'd be links to it once the scene is over. Instead Cloud has the same line about Johnny and never pays any attention to Aerith no matter what she looks like. You'd think he'd be more attentive to her if he suddenly fell in love or whatever, but he's more focused on saving Tifa, and so is Aerith.

Aerith is dressed to impress Corneo. That's literally what the dress is for.

Cloud is literally confused and doesn't recognise Aerith in the red dress scene.

It's no different to when she offered a date. He just doesn't get it. Every time she tries to throw herself at him in any capacity he just doesn't understand what she's after.

And again in her resolution, he's confused. That's his emotional state around her. He doesn't understand what she's on about or why she says and does things towards him. And it's not him being oblivious about women. He's not a moron. He gets that Jessie is throwing herself at him and calls her desperate, so he's not some snow white pure innocent lamb. He understands he's attractive and women like him, he's just not interested in anyone but Tifa, and remains oblivious of her feelings because like him, she's buried them super deep in case it ruins their friendship. And he's under alien control but that's a whole other thing 🤣

And yeah, Yamazaki also confirmed Cloud was confused during the scene and in pretty much every other scene that Cloud appears with Aerith. He also scolded Cloud for being mean in scenes with Aerith. He said they're like siblings and Aerith annoys Cloud on purpose like a sister does to a brother.

If the mocap and the vas and the devs and everybody involved is telling you something then people should just shut up and accept it as a fact 🤷

Trolls pretending to be nice, and nice people pretending to be trolls

As an author trying to promote her independently published novel on a clock-sounding app ticking away towards monetizing our attention and its purchasing power more and more openly, it's rare that a video of mine gets more than 500 views despite my nearly 80,000 followers. I did have a video recently get 'big' (around 100k views in 24 hours or so), and it was, of course, about shonen anime and the dearth of enjoyable ones recently made, in my opinion. I am a pretty lesbian girl with purple hair, so whenever I make any content about my opinions on male-targeted anime, I get heated responses. Death and rape threats in quantities large enough that I've privated my channel for three months are reactions I've gotten from the community at large, and nothing really dents your self-confidence after that, so I was ready for that as I waded through over a thousand comments to farm for content that I could somehow, in some way, relate back to my novels. To my absolute pleasant surprise, most of the comments were very respectful, even when disagreeing vehemently with me! I was able to have fun with replying to as many as I feasibly could, giving my opinions on different shows and, finally, someone asks the golden question: "if you think you can do better, why don't you?" They were intending to be condescending and a little snide, but my eyes lit up like a cat at Christmas lights and I immediately replied with a video to the effect of: "I'm so glad you asked! I can do better, and here is where you can find me doing better in all of the genres I'm critiquing plus a few more." The response in the comments of that video were overwhelmingly positive. "This sounds so fun!" and "Can you give me a link to copy/paste?" and "When is this coming out?" I got a few sales out of it even. Thank you, catty internet troll! From that video, I got a series of comments essentially telling me to check my DMs, from a 25-year-old amateur beatboxing guy. I don't accept unsolicited messages willy-nilly, but when I checked my 'message requests,' I found this guy essentially saying my work was awful, but he was going to give me five stars as an Amazon review anyways, so I could grow my influence. I laughed and ignored the message. Two hours later, this guy sends a second message saying he "thought about it some more" and was actually proud of me, saying that the flaws he had previously pointed out could be workshopped into a passable narrative voice and, for an amateur author, I was doing pretty good.

Beloved friends, I have been writing for 15 years. I have written over 70 short stories and eight or so novels, with frequent workshopping from other professional and academic authors. I have a degree in English and Creative Writing.

That all to say, this guy was not getting under my skin, because I know my writing is good and that guy is just a dick explaining my own field to me. Whatever. I laughed about it with some other writing friends. Later, in the comments of that same video, I got a commenter who called me, "cringe," and "hateful." These comments stuck out because they felt strangely dissonant for the video they were posted under. There was no reference to what was cringe, and the video is expressly kind in tone and content. Someone else commented asking them, "what do you mean?" and the troll replied, "just watch her other videos" while calling me hateful again. I saw the same account post similarly rude comments under several of my other videos. All of them had the same general theme: something that was not, in all actuality, very mean or based in reality, but would make great rebuttal fodder where I could paint myself as a poor, sweet victim of a cruel smear campaign. Not just that, they were liking several videos too! As I said, I've experienced hatewaves, so I can recognize them, and this was decidedly not that. No, this person, the best I can tell, is trying to help me and my content by getting people to rush to my defense! It seems to be a burner account, with no followers or following, so there's no way to tell if it's someone I know, but what a strangely kind thing to do!

Keep on trucking, you kind little troll account! And to anyone reading this, be aware that these algorithms on these clock apps farm negative content, so while I can find the beauty in it, please release yourself from the expectation that it must be so enjoyable.

firstly, how do all those study blogs find different ideas for their post photos? all I can think about is; walking feet, a book page, and the forest-y vibes. please, studyblr gods, give me advice.

I didn't have an entry yesterday because all I did the entire day was try to find a pharmacy that sells my ADHD pills. Couldn't find it so today's first mission was to change that. But before that, let me tell you about the "shoe ghost" in our apartment.

spoiler alert; there is no actual ghost. The kids in our apartment do not follow the norms at all, they walk throw their shoes around, ig. OR maybe there is a ghost family that lives here. They had to buy shoes to blend in with people but unlike their other clothes, shoes are not part of the "passable" ghost experience. So when they phase into a wall, it just doesn't work.

Anyways, I found my pills! Around a big hospital. There is a problem with finding ADHD pills in Turkey even though you have a prescription. You cannot buy them without a doctor's prescription, so I do not understand why I cannot find them. maybe, just maybe, they need to demand more here.

FIRST BOOK FINISH OF OUR BLOG! I finished Sontag's Regarding the Pain of the Others!

This book takes a different approach to the "one picture is worth thousands of words" aspect and instead says "one picture of other people in pain worth thousands of questions, feelings, and ethical questions". It was very gore-y but also explained much about "war photographing" and its different aspects. Taking into our course discourses, this book just exemplified antagonism and agonism.

Not to be a creeper but I saw your tags on the Jim and Claire post and I was just wondering what your thoughts were on the portrayal of their relationship? I recently finished Wizards and I liked them together in general, but I remember feeling a little frustrated previously because I didn't feel like their romance added much to the plot or story, unlike a relationship like Rayllum.

Not a creeper for having reading comprehension - go ahead!

For Jim and Claire, I always found them passably cute. They weren't a ship I disliked, but I was never really into them, even if I liked the cute/normal moments to the series. I definitely liked them and Claire more once she joined the team and learned about magic, and I still always appreciate that she has her own reasons (her brother) for being so involved in Troll things.

For me, romance in TOA is definitely its weakest spot, as the only pairings I was really genuinely invested in are Steve/Aja and Draal/Nomura, which I always wished would get more focus. I also liked Nana/Vex from 3Below, but mostly because it was funny and sweet.

For me I think the disconnect was Jim and Claire feeling very high school - cute dates, going to prom, the guy liking the girl from afar, etc. They never really felt like endgame, big Dramatic love story the show went for, which is when they would lose me a bit more.

So ultimately I really like them, but they're mostly interesting to me in a "date for a few years, break up when they're 20, get back together and stay together after being Friends when they're like 26" kind of way than my interest in their specific romantic relationship being strong during the show itself.

And I agree with you about the Rayllum thing! One of the reasons I love them so much is because - despite being young and having some of that same awkward flustered nature that Jim/Claire have - Rayla and Callum have a maturity to their relationship. Part of it is how directly they've helped each other through some very emotionally heavy times (and not that Jim and Claire haven't, but not to the same degree / with the same weight) and that they feel like Best Friends first and foremost. Jim and Claire, partially because of Jim liking her from afar in the beginning, never really developed a super strong Just Friendship period by proxy.

I think Radars mom has the type of rural homegrown wisdom where she thinks the severity of her morning sickness would determine the babies gender so she assumed Radar would be a girl so everyone got her little dresses and painted the Radars room pink but after Radar was born she just. raised her as a girl anyway? you cant exactly scrap a 1-10 year female wardrobe and buy new in Ottumwa so out of convenience he was raised as a girl but recognized as a boy. so i feel by the time he gets drafted in korea and has spent plenty of time performing as both genders he really doesnt care anymore and only prefers mens clothing because he personally finds it more comfortable. i think he would accept he/she/they pronouns and be demisexual.

Please dont feel like im coming for your neck specifically if this is your hc its totally valid to want ace representation and it would only feel natural to assign it to the character who doesnt have any relationships as a part of their backstory or characterization but I feel like only assigning Mulchahy with this role is not only some pretty upsetting ace tokenism but harmful to the sanctity of his faith and vows he took on as a priest. That being said! I think Mulchahy is bisexual (and would probably think Jesus was too) and I think you could address him with he/they pronouns but has a slight preference towards he.

Sidney Freedman- It seems like almost everyone in my post has come down with a case of the bisexual he/theys 🤒 but yeah besides Hawkeye I think Sidney would be the vocal about his identity? He could run circles around homophobes and transphobes who try to claim gay/transness to be a disease and I think his wife probably knows and supports his identity although they remain monogamous (Sidney is NOT a cheater >:( )

I've gotta say, my thoughts on these names are coloured by euphony as well and by my own pronunciation. We've spent the entire GoT run pronouncing Aegon as AY-gon and now I see all these alternative variants popping up like EGGON (what is this, Netflix's Dark?) and even AGGON (??). Don't worry, the Egg nickname makes sense for AY-gon as well, since nicknames don't have to follow the exact phonetic structure as the main names. That being said, there are some names like Aemma, which I pronounce "Emma" like a normal person, since that obviously sounds better.

What a long paranthesis!! Can I ever just shut up!!!

Anyway, my reasoning for the our imaginary child's name was that I kept some identifiable letters from Alicent's name, i.e. A, L, I/Y and C/S, ergo Alyssa, Alysanne or Aelyx. Alysanne is probably the least Targaryen name, since it contains the suffix "-anne", which doesn't seem to be Valyrian. Her name is a derivative of Alyssa Velaryon's, so there's proof you can deviate a bit from the formula, hence my suggestion of Alys (lmao). Both Alicent and Alys are obviously variants of our real-world Alice.

So, let's see!

Ael/Aelle - I'm not sure how to pronounce this. Ayl sounds awful, Elle is much better, but it's a rather simple name and I like them more on the frilly side. Same thing with Aela/Aella. Also, written down, they kind of look like the word "eel" a bit. I'd rather use it as a nickname.

Aeron, Aelarr, Aenor, Aenora - all decent options, although Aelarr is the one closest to Alicent because it keeps the A and the L.

Aelon - I'd avoid this for now, because of its similarity to Elon (Musk). :))

Aeleys/Aelys - the first spelling is a bit of a headache, though I can't say it wouldn't fit in-universe. IMO it only sounds decent as "Alys", not as "AY-lys". Another possibility is to pronounce Aelys as "Ellis". Ellis is used in the books for a girl, but it could be used on a boy, too, to my ears.

I dunno why, but AY-lys sounds better on a boy to me, maybe because Alice is so imprinted on my brain by now. Same with Aelyx (AY-lyx). Although, I can see Alyx as a passable female Targaryen name (there is the real-life Alix as a nickname for Alexandra to base it on).

This June’s post is so long overdue it’s not even funny, but I wasn’t particularly passionate about the movies I watched in June, hence the long delay. There were two absolute gems, but everything else is passable at best and complete nightmare at worst.

1. Favourite movies: Top Gun: Maverick (2022); Pride (2014). 2. Decent movies I liked / appreciated but not loved: Bureau of Missing Persons (1933). It's a cute little 30s investigative journalism flick and it was really nice to see. Such a pleasant blast! 3. Best scenes: mum's hospital visit / 'Where are my lesbians?' (Pride, 2014); Great Balls of Fire / aerial scenes (Top Gun: Maverick, 2022); coming clean (Bureau of Missing Persons, 1933); ‘Room for one more?’ (Terror by Night, 1946). 4. Favourite genres: adventure, noir. 5. Favourite directors: Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick, 2022). There's absolutely no competition this time! I also really enjoyed Matthew Warchus's Pride (2014). 6. Favourite actors: Richard Conte (Hollywood Story, 1951); Jeanne Crain (Dangerous Crossing, 1953); Tom Cruise, Miles Teller (Top Gun: Maverick, 2022); Imelda Staunton, Ben Schnetzer, Andrew Scott (Pride, 2014). 7. Least favourite performances: No one was particularly bad, but Steven Geray in So Dark the Night (1946) was painfully bland, and literally anyone in The Bad Seed (1956) was overacting like there was no tomorrow. 8. The most wasted cast: Whle the film is okay, I do feel very disappointed when it comes to If I Had a Million (1932). Some of my favourite directord were responsible for segments of this film. H. Bruce Humberstone (segment "The Forger"), Ernst Lubitsch (segment "The Clerk"), Norman Z. McLeod (segments "China Shop", "Road Hogs"), William A. Seiter (segment "The Three Marines"). Joseph L. Mankiewicz wrote the majority of the segments. Not even to mention the actors! Gary Cooper, Charles Laughton, George Raft, Jack Oakie, W.C. Fields, Roscoe Karns. This could've been so much better had they at the very least committed to a tone. 9. The best wasted premise: If I Had a Million (1932). Make it a straight drama (just don't forget to market it as such) or a laugh-out-loud comedy. Connect the stories so it feels united. What you don't make is a disjointed film that jumps wildly between slapstick humour and depressing end-of-life drama. It's like the film has bipolar. 10. Best premise: Pride (2014). Fish-out-of-water has never been done exactly like this. 11. Favourite cast: literally anyone and everyone in both 2014's Pride and 2022's Top Gun: Maverick. 12. Favourite on-screen duos: Ben Schnetzer with literally anyone in Pride (2014); Tom Cruise x Miles Teller (Top Gun: Maverick, 2022); Roscoe Karns x Gary Cooper (If I Had a Million, 1932); Bette Davis x Pat O'Brien (Bureau of Missing Persons, 1933); Richard Conte x Julie Adams (Hollywood Story, 1951); James Cagney x Pat O'Brien (Boy Meets Girl, 1938). The last duo is pure gold even when the film is subpar at best. Almost makes me want to rewatch Angels With Dirty Faces (1938). 13. Favourite on-screen relationships: Butch Saunders + Norma Roberts (Bureau of Missing Persons, 1933); Larry O'Brien + Sally Rousseau (Hollywood Story, 1951); CAPT Pete "Maverick" Mitchell + Penny Benjamin (Top Gun: Maverick, 2022). 14. Favourite characters: everyone in Pride (2014), even the moronic characters; Butch Saunders (Bureau of Missing Persons, 1933); Larry O'Brien (Hollywood Story, 1951); CAPT Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, LT Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Top Gun: Maverick, 2022). 15. Favourite quote: Why don't you break out with hives and scratch yourself to death? (Bureau of Missing Persons, 1933). I wanted to choose the 'Where are my lesbians?' from Pride (2014) but I doubt it constitutes as a quote. 16. Favourite fact discovered in 2022: real-life near-military preparations for Top Gun: Maverick (2022). It gave me faith in movies again. 17. The most overrated film: The Bad Seed (1956). It was really tedious. It did have its moments but mostly was extremelly underwhelming, especially with that ending. 18. The most disappointing film: So Dark the Night (1946). It went off a cliff in the end. Completely and utterly. Also, Impact (1949). Only after reading thr synopsis did I realise that I’ve actually seen the film. It’s so utterly forgettable! 19. The biggest surprise: Pride (2014)! 20. Best cinematography: Top Gun: Maverick (2022). There's no choice, not really. 21. Best set design: Dead of Night (1945). 22. Best costume design: Renié for Dangerous Crossing (1953). If there was anything to love about this film it's how stunning Jeanne Crain looked. 23. Best music: Top Gun: Maverick (2022). Great Balls of Fire is unbeatable, mate! 24. Best prooduction choice: shooting with limited CGI (Top Gun: Maverick, 2022). It made the film timeless. 25. Worst production choice: so many to choose from! The inconsistent tone in If I Had a Million (1932); changing the ending in The Bad Seed (1956); the terrible audition scene 99 River Street (1953); making Where Danger Lives (1950) kind of an Out of the Past (1947) knock-off; the plot twist in So Dark the Night (1946), passive direction in Highway Dragnet (1954). 26. Film of the month: Top Gun: Maverick (2022) with Pride (2014) only slightly behind.

And while I'm here, one more quick post about a few games.

I decided to try playing something that isn't an RPG for a change. Normally I play lots of different kinds of things, but I kind of got stuck on playing half a dozen RPGs at once for most of the past year for some reason.

So far it hasn't been going super well.

The first thing that caught my eye in my Steam library was Killer Instinct, because I got it cheap in a bundle and remembered the older ones being kinda fun. Fighting games are pretty far from RPGs too, so that should be a good change of pace.

I don't hate it, but I don't especially like it either. It's kind of fun that most characters I tried seem to have some sort of silly gimmick because that makes them all feel different, but also it's a pain to learn them when you're just trying a bunch out to see if any of them click with you. The vast majority did not for me, and I felt like I never had a good sense of what the correct timing was for basically anything, so I decided I'd try one of the other fighting games I got in that same bundle but hadn't gotten around to yet.

Next was Soulcalibur 6. I hadn't played a SC game in any significant amount since SC2 on the GameCube, but that one was fun even if I wasn't super great at it. It told me that the story mode that has the tutorials in it was played with a character you make yourself and not one of the pre-existing ones, so I spent like half an hour screwing around with the character creator and making an edgy vampire girl with a fish for a hat. Then I went to the story mode and it informed me I had to make a new character from scratch and couldn't just import one from the character creator in the main menu. Uh oh.

I just made a generic default one so I could get on with it, and I worked my way through the tutorials. The gameplay was fine I guess, and it slowly started coming back to me from when I was younger. The story was not though. For a series with such a long history of ridiculous characters and ridiculous plots the story mode is astoundingly boring, both that one and the main story mode.

I think in 90 minutes I made it through the tutorials and maybe five actual fights, and the rest of that was just an endless series of cutscenes and VN-style dialogues across two separate story modes that I had zero interest or investment in. Ain't nobody got time for that unless it's actually good instead of just vaguely passable.

Moving on, Injustice 2 was next. I was somewhat hopeful that it would do better on the story side of things because the first one had a surprisingly fun story, and the comic series they spun off from it was actually pretty decent for at least some of its run too. It's just silly DC AU nonsense, but there are some fun alternate versions of characters and interactions between them and characters from the real main timeline too. I was only cautiously optimistic though because the trailers and promotional screenshots were pretty ugly, and somehow even though it has a larger roster of playable characters it has a substantially smaller number of female characters. They even got rid of my Zatanna, which is unforgivable.

The gameplay is probably fine? I didn't get to spend too much time with it though. It runs both really well and really badly on my computer. It's smooth and plays well and everything while also having some Age of Calamity-ass load times. Just restarting the same fight if I lost took something like 12 seconds, and that's nothing compared to having to load the whole thing fresh starting from the main menu where it's easily at least double that. I hit alt-F4 and uninstalled it after sitting on a loading screen for 20+ seconds just trying to load the tutorials after I wasn't doing great on the first few story mode fights (bounding between three different fighting games in 24 hours did not help with keeping the different systems straight).

And yeah, it really is an ugly game. On a technical level it's all fine visually, but it has severe AAA-itis when it comes to the art style and the "we have to cram every lighting/rendering feature on the checklist in whether it makes sense or not" curse that too many AAA games suffer from. It might have more polygons and more detailed textures and a bunch more fancy lighting effects than the first game, but the overall effect looks so much worse to me.

So do I just not like fighting games that aren't Smash anymore, or is it just these ones? Now I'm almost afraid to go back to Skullgirls for the new stuff in it or to try the newer BlazBlue games past the first one I played in case I just can't enjoy them anymore.

On the plus side I did get briefly distracted in the middle of there somewhere by Devil Daggers, which I also kinda forgot to play for the past several years. I'm not great at it, and I'm not sure I'll play it enough more to get particularly good at it, but I have at least had maybe an hour of fun with it already which is good enough. Also I apparently haven't entirely forgotten how to aim in a FPS even though I basically hadn't used a mouse since December.

Little update! I've been doing that Pamela Reif workout for the past week, and I've finally reached the stage where I can get through the whole thing lol. Baby steps.

Anyways, a girl can dream about what I can wear in the future. My dream aesthetic for clothing is, like, Dark Academia. Something about the earthy tones, I don't know.

Right now, when I try wearing any outfit I think will look awesome, I end up going to school in it, catching a glimpse of myself in a window, and seeing that I'm pretty ugly in the outfit.

I'd like to one day be able to strut down the street like its a fashion show, knowing I look smoking hot. Or at least passable.

I digress, maybe I'll post like, a wishlist of clothes, just 'cause. I'm also still on the lookout for one of those ridiculous Pinterest workouts to give a go for a week, and see the actual results it yields.

Rosea is a sweets person. If given a choice, she'll near always consume something sugary over anything else. Chocolate especially, but sweet fruits and vegetables are also just as likely. And if it's also a carb? No questions asked, she's eating it. It's a no brainer that baked goods are a comfort food for her. Her favorite meal, however, is pretty much anything with chicken in it.

She can cook. She can even do so passably. Her enjoyment of it is more contingent on getting the food afterwards, however.

🌻 What little things do they notice about people or the world around them that make them happy? What tiny little treasures do they find in the normal every day that makes the world seem a little brighter for them?

Rosea is an avid people-watcher. Not really on purpose, more as a side-effect of always staying aware of her surroundings, but the attention to others in public spaces means she has witnessed a lot of somewhat private moments in people's lives. She loves seeing people just living their own lives and experiencing joy. From the awkward teen couple bonding over cute merchandise in the mall to the toddler seeing bubbles for the first time, it's those little moments of joy she holds close. It helps her get through her more isolated days.

She's always been more of a 'do-er' than a 'say-er'. Blame it on the infamously taciturn Immortal, but she's not always good at saying how she feels. She'll show her affection by saving the better parts of a snack, waiting to watch a show, and going out of her way to make someone she cares about's day a little easier.
